A luxury home in Markham has been taken off the prize list for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Home Lottery because it backs on to a house with a legal licence to grow marijuana, the hospital foundation has announced.

“The prize property, located at 39 Jeffrey Nidha Cres. in Markham, will be withdrawn from the Home Lottery immediately and will not be open for public viewing,” the foundation said in a statement.

Markham city council has approved an all-way stop sign at an intersection where a 4-year-old girl was struck and killed last fall.

The intersection of Riverwalk Drive and Fieldside Street is one of three new all-way stops.

Last fall, 4-year-old Arisa Ahmed was hit while crossing the road with her mother and sister as they were returning to school.

They were crossing Fieldside Street when an SUV travelling westbound on Riverwalk Drive made a left turn on to Fieldside Street and struck the two girls.

Arisa later died of her injuries.

The driver was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

At the time, there was a stop sign on Fieldside Street, giving drivers on Riverwalk the right-of-way.

Local councillor Logan Kanapathi argued the local community expected to see a stop sign immediately after the incident.

“The people are still waiting,” he said. “They are pointing the finger at us. We have not improved traffic safety in 10 years.”

But driver behaviour is also an important factor to consider when talking about pedestrian safety, said the city’s community and fire services commissioner Brenda Librecz.

“There is a blatant disregard for our children in our neighbourhoods,” she said.

“Unfortunately, stop signs won’t prevent accidents. When someone is charged with dangerous operation, there is more to it than physical components.”

There will be three new all-way stop signs: Riverwalk Drive and Barter Street; Riverwalk Drive and Fieldside Street; and Fred McLaren Boulevard and Stricker Avenue.

The move, Kanapathi says, is long overdue.

“It’s time for a change,” he said.

“I could name a number of unsafe intersections.”

While the first intersection at Riverwalk Drive and Barter Street met the provincial stop sign warrants, the other two did not.

In fact, too many stop signs may create a false sense of security, he said.

If stop signs don’t meet provincial warrants, then adding them could create a more dangerous situation, Scarpitti said.

‘If we think signs are going to stop bad driving, we’re fooling ourselves...’

“I can appreciate the concern.

But the intersections in question are near local schools, argued Kanapathi, and the provincial warrants are merely guidelines.

City staff reported ‘near misses’ between cars and pedestrians are common at Riverwalk Drive and Fieldside Street and at Fred McLaren Boulevard and Stricker Avenue.

Provincial stop sign warrants look at traffic and right-of-way issues, said city technical services and traffic manager, David Porretta.

However, the warrants don’t take into account pedestrian volume, proximity to schools or other community places or physical layout of

the road itself, Porretta said.

Each intersection should be looked at on a case-by-case basis, especially near schools, Kanapathi said.

“There are so many factors,” he said. “You can’t brush all the intersections the same.”

David Suzuki Public School is on Riverwalk Drive between Fieldside and Barter streets and John McCrae Public School is at the Fred McLaren Boulevard and Stricker Avenue intersection.

Education plays a big role in changing driver behaviour, Librecz said.

“It’s not just one neighbourhood,” she said. “We’re seeing it across the region and across the province.”

Pedestrian education is also important, argued Councillor Valerie Burke. “(Pedestrians) are plugged in, on their phone, not paying attention, wearing dark clothes,” she said.

“They need to take some responsibility because they are the ones who will get hit. Residents want the road to change. But there’s a combination of many things.”

The city is hosting a traffic safety workshop for councillors during general committee Feb. 29.

The workshop is an education session for councillors to learn more about traffic issues in the city and to discuss possible strategies.

Although several local municipal councils have passed motions calling for York Region’s chairperson to be elected, there’s a possibility their pitches could fall on deaf ears when the issue resurfaces on Thursday.

If regional council actually makes a decision and doesn’t push the matter off again, that is.

Councils in Newmarket, Aurora, Stouffville, East Gwillimbury and Markham have all voted in favour of having an elected chairperson.

That would replace the current system of having the region’s top political job selected by the 20 politicians sitting at regional council.

However, other than Stouffville Mayor Justin Altmann, the mayors of those municipalities voted for keeping the status quo.

It’s the mayors and regional councillors, for those municipalities with more than one representative on regional council, not local councillors, who will make the decision.

For example, in a 7-1 vote, Newmarket Mayor Tony Van Bynen was the only one on his council to oppose an elected chairperson when the town’s council dealt with the issue last week.

Will he and other mayors whose opinions differ from their local councils endorse the current system or follow the wishes of their local councils?

When the issue came up at regional council in June 2012, there was no appetite around the table for change.

Stouffville’s Altmann, Newmarket Regional Councillor John Taylor and Markham regional councillors Joe Li, Nirmala Armstrong and Jim Jones voted in favour of an elected chair when the issue came up recently at their local councils.

Newmarket-Aurora MPP Chris Ballard, who is spearheading a private member’s bill at Queen’s Park that would impose an elected chair if regional council doesn’t make

the move itself, has said it’s wrong not to have voters elect the position.

The chair, who is paid more than $200,000 a year, oversees a combined operating and capital budget of $3 billion in a region with a population of 1.1 million.

Durham, Halton and Waterloo regions have chairs elected by voters, while Niagara and Peel don’t, although Peel is looking at the issue, York CAO Bruce Macgregor said.

About 750,000 York residents would be eligible to vote for the chair if the system is changed.

Almost three-quarters of eligible York voters, or 550,000 residents, would come from Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill, Macgregor said.

Candidates for regional chair would likely have to pony up a considerable amount of money to get elected. Based on population projections, the spending limit for the 2018 municipal election could be in excess of $650,000, he said.

There is a chance regional council won’t make a decision on electing the chair at all on Thursday.

That’s because regional council is also expected to consider terms of reference for a governance review, including the method of selecting the regional chair.

The review would also look at whether the size of regional council should be changed.

At the moment, Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Stouffville and King only have one representative, their mayors, on regional council. Vaughan wants to add a fifth councillor, equal to Markham’s representation.

The review would look at if councillors should be directly elected to the region rather than sitting on both the region and their local councils.

The region’s $3-billion budget covers a number of key services such policing, public transit, public health, water and wastewater, regional roads and regional planning.

Here’s trick to lightning quick typing speeds

I

t was one of my true regrets when I was younger.

A move from another province back to my home province of Ontario when I was entering Grade 9, meant that I couldn’t take music at my Toronto junior high school.

Despite several years of piano studies and the ability to read music, the school administration said without proof of Grade 7 or 8 music, I couldn’t register in the music program.

“How about taking a typing class?” the school principal helpfully suggested to my mother and myself, noting it was an entrylevel program.

Typing, I thought sadly, what would I need that for?

Fast forward to decades in journalism, and obviously it’s a skill I use every day.

My fingers hover knowingly over the “home row” — as those who have been taught touch typing will recognize — and I can watch what I type, not looking down at the keys.

In fact, my work keyboard is so worn down by my fingers typing certain keys, that the actual letters are wiped off, some keys now blank.

Yet new Finnish research apparently says that with all of us now typing away on phones and other devices, those Grade 9 formal touch typing classes — the Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over the Lazy Dog — do not necessarily mean I type faster than those who weren’t formally taught keyboard typing.

Look around you everywhere and you know it’s true.

Even before modern devices came into play, I could hear now departed sports editor Fred Simpson pound away at his typewriter (yes, ancient newsroom equipment), then his computer keyboard, two or four fingers stabbing away at the keys. Boy, was he fast.

The younger generation has never known a time when there weren’t video games and cell phones in their lives. They’ve learned keyboard techniques for

And yes, my daughter’s fingers fly over her iPhone.

But not mine.

“Don’t you use more than one finger?” asked my son the other day, watching me carefully using one finger to type on my iPhone.

I told him the screen is too small to engage more than one finger at once and not have ridiculous and sometimes upsetting typos (think ‘cat’ becoming ‘fat’ or work ‘shift’ becoming another word starting with SH).

So I did my own small poll on Family Day, asking my nieces, brother and his wife how they type on their devices.

Immediately an assortment of android and iPhone devices were brought out to the table, while family members tried to answer my question in exact detail.

“I type with both thumbs,” “I type with four fingers” and “I hold it in one hand and type with fingers of my other hand” were some of the responses.

But back to the research finding out of the Aalto University in Finland. Findings proved that instruction on keyboarding didn’t make users faster, but the technique of not moving your hands around as you type, did matter.

Those who are faster on any keyboard have figured out the technique of hovering in one place over the keys, not wasting motions with hand and finger movements all over the place.

So if you want to be faster, that’s the trick, apparently. No more Quick Brown Fox jumping over the Lazy Dog required.

But thanks, Mr. Pilkey, your typing tips do help me every day.

Test was no ‘glitch’ Re: Making internet safer for kids, Feb. 11.

Thank you to reporter Amanda Persico for her excellent article. I feel it is important, however, to correct comments made by the York Region District School Board spokesperson.

Obviously no internet filter can be 100 per cent foolproof. However, the active testing referred to was nothing more than my wife, with permission, logging on to the school computers using my daughter’s password, and typing in the word “porn” in Google.

This brought up a host of inappropriate images, some of which included children, and also listings of websites which she was able to freely open by clicking on their associated links.

It was that simple and frankly something any student of any age would have been equally able to do, even unintentionally.

This was not an isolated incident or a “glitch”.

Before formally approaching the board, we had made sure similar

searches were conducted at other York schools as well.

The results were the same.

We are encouraged that the YRDSB has taken active steps to rectify this situation.

Conveying inaccurate information to parents and the public is not helpful.

Fix crosswalk woes I walked home on a recent Friday to find the intersection near my house, Warden and Masseyfield Gate, blocked by police cruisers.

In the middle of the crosswalk, a single mangled bicycle; its tires warped.

“Is the person OK?” I asked the police officer.

“They’re in very serious condition.”

The next night, I pressed the pedestrian signal to cross that same intersection.

Despite repeated pressings during the right signal phase and the button’s repeated acknowledgements, the walk signal never activated.

I eventually had to jaywalk to cross the street.

I’m angry a neighbour of mine got seriously injured

because traffic engineers at the city thought vulnerable road users like me and that cyclist should have to ask permission to cross a street.

I’m angry that when I went to the city’s website to find an email to complain to, I found eight condescending bullet points about what my responsibilities are as a pedestrian when only two were listed for drivers.

What about the responsibility to come to a complete stop at stop signs? Where was your messaging to drivers it is their responsibility to not hit people?

I’m angry that not only am I already treated as a second-class road user by motorists, somehow my government thinks I’m the one who needs to be taught how to use roads.

I reject the notion drivers are the only people worth planning for, and the notion I am the one causing problems for other people.

The design of our transportation network and the signalling system has utterly failed pedestrians and cyclists in this city.

Lack of agreement stalls retail hub’s redevelopment

Redevelopment of a major retail destination in Markham appears to have stalled over a lack of agreement over parking, roadways and connections between shopping centres, a city committee heard this week.

The fact the project borders the City of Toronto also means additional approvals are needed.

Plans to rebuild Pacific Mall and Market Village at Steeles Avenue and Kennedy Road have been bogged down because of the multitude of property owners who have a say over the plans, councillors heard this week.

However the mayor argued there are no fundamental changes being made. The plan is to still have one integrated site. He said parking and roadways are minor variances that can be worked out and urged the parties to work together.

Once all is said and done, Market Village is supposed to become the Remington Centre – a slick, modern shopping centre, featuring a fusion of more than 1,200 high-end Western and Asian retailers.

In the same parcel of land are Pacific Mall and the smaller Kennedy Corners.

“Landowners need to start to work together in earnest,” Mayor Frank Scarpitti said.

Plans to redevelop Market Village and Pacific Mall have hit a roadblaock.

“There’s been a long history of success at this corner. Let’s build on that success. Any delay only hurts us all.”

Council endorsed the initial plan in 2011.

Since then it’s been a series of “fits and starts”, Randy Pettigrew of the Remington Group said.

“There have been a series of meetings, we all leave on the same page,” Pettigrew said.

“Then, nothing happens.”

The idea is for all three locations to function as one shopping destination, Pettigrew said.

“The average customer will not know there are different owners,” he said.

But plans are a standstill when it comes to parking and existing roadways on the property as well as the idea of adding a pedestrian connection between the buildings.

Currently, there is no indoor connection between Pacific Mall and Market Village.

“This should be a requirement,” said deputy mayor and Regional Councillor Jack Heath. “No one wants to walk through the

slush in the winter time to get to the other building.”

Plans for the new Remington Centre include more than 3,400 parking spaces, the majority underground. Remington’s plans also include a pedestrian link between the buildings at one of the underground levels.

Since any reconfiguration goes contrary to existing agreements in place with Pacific Mall, approval from a majority of owners is required to make changes, the mall says.

Said Pettigrew: “We’ve gone as far as we can go. Other parties need to come to the table.”

The second phase of the project is a residential condo building. That is on the backburner until the retail portion is sorted out.

In a letter, mall solicitor Mary Flynn-Guglietti called plans for the Remington Centre premature, saying any change to parking or roadways cannot be done without consent from Pacific Mall owners.

Individual retail owners make up between 30 and 40 per cent of Pacific Mall’s ownership, she noted.

Another design element is the inclusion of a bus terminal on site for YRT and TTC. Plans also include an urban square with a water feature that can host cultural events such as the annual Taste of Asia.

But those plans are subject to an environmental assessment for Steeles Avenue currently underway by the City of Toronto.

The study is looking at transit designs for both sides of Steeles. A report is expected within six months.

Two York Region residents have the culinary chops to cook for family.

But do they have the finesse and gourmet touch to become Canada’s next MasterChef?

MasterChef Canada kicked off its third season Sunday night on CTV. The show pits amateur home chefs head-to-head in a heated competition in which the winner will not only take home $100,000, but also claims the MasterChef title.

Markham resident Alawn Lai and Maple resident Jennifer Baglione are among the top 40 who will cook, compete and be subjected to the exacting standards of renowned Canadian chefs and judges Michael Bonacini, Alvin Leung and Claudio Aprile.

Both York Region residents started their cooking dream in their homes, cooking for their families.

Lai, a local developer, is used to a hectic kitchen atmosphere. Several times a year he hosts dinner parties for friends and family, challenging himself not to make the same dish twice.

Year’s Eve included more than 100 hungry guests.

“I seldom repeat myself. Except for must-haves, like turkey at Thanksgiving. But then I prepare it differently each year. That’s why people like to come. They want to see what surprises I can make.”

He took that approach when auditioning for the show, making lobster three ways — a lobster-mango salad, lobster and sea urchin in a

pepper sauce and lobster bisque.

Each of his dinner parties is in support of a charitable organization, such as Haiti relief, Free the Children, Orbis Canada and Youth Without Shelter.

Instead of encouraging guests to bring wine or dessert, he encourages them to make a charitable donation.

“Everyone cooks for their family,” said the father of two. “I’m

cooking for purpose, for another meaning.”

The clock is not his biggest challenge. Instead, timed-cooking is something he learned from his mother in Hong Kong, where she made the family meal using only two burners.

“I didn’t learn cooking skills from her,” he said. “I learned more about cooking. She would tell me, ‘Utilize your time. Don’t waste time wait-

ing. Clean the fish while the rice was cooking’.”

For former Thornhill resident Jennifer Baglione, MasterChef Canada is a way to prove to herself and to her family that she was destined to become a chef.

Two shot near suspected illegal gambling den York Regional Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after at least two men were shot at a suspected illegal gaming operation in Markham Monday night.

Two men received non-life threatening injuries after they were shot in a plaza at 4080 Steeles Ave. near Kennedy Road, duty inspector Staff-Sgt. Gary Miner said.

The incident was initially probed by Toronto police, after the two victims took

themselves to a Toronto hospital, he said.

York police are now investigating, after it was determined the shots were fired at a plaza north of Steeles Avenue, Miner said.

A series of gunshots appeared to have been fired at about 10 p.m., he said.

“We don’t know what the motive is and these people do not seem to have been targeted, they seem to have been hit by random gunfire, is what

happened,” he said.

“We still are on scene collecting exhibits and shell casings and so on,” he said the next day.

Police aren’t sure if anyone else was injured, he said. “At least two (people were shot), that we know of.”

Investigators are appealing to any witnesses who may have seen or heard anything in the area leading up to, or following, the shooting. Investigators are also appealing to

any nearby businesses that may have video surveillance to please come forward.

Police charge man, 40, with child luring York Regional Police charged a Bowmanville man this week with luring a child using social media.

YRP’s Internet Child Exploitation unit began investigating the case in November, when the mother of a 12-year-old York Region boy reported finding inappropriate chats on her son’s social media account.

A person posing as a 25-year-old woman named Jennifer Jackson contacted the boy on Facebook, police said, adding the chats began with the person complimenting the boy on his appearance and asking him to upload a photo of himself.

The chats continued over time and became sexual.

Investigators determined Jennifer Jackson was a fake profile being operated by a 40-year-old man.

York police are searching for four men following reports of a violent home invasion in Markham early Sunday morning.

Police were called at 5:30 a.m. to Staglin Court, in the Major Mackenzie Drive East Road/ Woodbine Avenue bypass area after receiving a report that four men forced their way into a home.

One man was armed with a handgun and another armed with a knife, police said.

The suspects demanded cash from the victims; two adults and a child. The adult male victim’s hands were zip-tied, but no one was injured, police said.

The investigation continues and police are asking anyone with video surveillance in the area or any witnesses to call the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6630.

The suspects are described as: male, white, 5’7”, medium build, wearing black covering over

Homes damaged by garbage truck York police are looking for witnesses after a recycling truck hit two homes in Thornhill.

On Tuesday, at 5:40 p.m., police responded to reports that a recycling dump truck ended up in the backyard between two homes on Weeping Willow Lane in the area of Yonge Street and Royal Orchard Boulevard.

The collision also damaged a hydro pole and a gas meter. No injuries were reported.

A 39-year-old Bramp-

ton man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and careless driving.

The investigation is ongoing.

Modify bathrooms to make them safer Few areas in a home can prove as perilous as bathrooms. Every year, thousands of people visit emergency rooms because of injuries suffered in bathrooms. The majority of these injuries - many of which require hospitalization - result from falls.

Injuries sustained in bathrooms typically occur in and around bathtubs, usually when a person is getting in or out of the tub. Falls occur when people slip on wet surfaces or get dizzy and lose consciousness within the tight confines of the bathroom.

Although bathroom injuries are mostly associated with the elderly, anyone is susceptible to such injuries. Debilitating diseases, instability from an accident or injury or even impaired vision can trigger a bathroom accident. Thankfully, some minor modifications can make bathrooms safer for everyone.

Grab bars Unsteady individuals may rely on towel bars or shower knobs to provide some balance when maneuvering around bathrooms. But such items were not designed to support a person’s weight and can be slippery, making grab bars the safer choice.

Look for bars with slip-resistant surfaces instead of chrome plating. Bolted-in bars that are fixed to the studs in a wall, provide more reliable support than bars that employ suction to stay connected to the wall.

Install the bars where they provide optimal leverage and stability, such as close to the shower and on each side of the toilet.

Chairs A bath/shower chair can make bathing safer.

Pharmacies and medical supply retailers carry these sturdy, plastic chairs and stools which can fit inside of a shower or tub. They enable a person to rest his or her legs and sit while bathing. When remodelling a bathroom, have a seating area built into the design of the shower enclosure so that the addition looks seamless.

Transfer bench Many injuries occur when people are attempting to get in and out of the tub or shower, but a transfer bench can greatly reduce the risk of such injuries.

Lever-style fixtures are easier to maneuver and can help prevent scalding. These levers also are easier for children to manage. It is recommended to install pressure-balanced and temperaturecontrolled valves in the bath and shower.

Forgiving flooring Tile may be preferred around the bathroom, but it can be cold and slippery. Investigate other waterresistant flooring materials that may be softer underfoot and offer greater traction. Rubber flooring made from recycled tires is one option that is gaining ground for its practicality and sustainability.

Changes around the bathroom can alleviate many of the risks that contribute to the hundreds of thousands of injuries that occur in bathrooms every year.

The Bill Crothers Secondary School Colts junior boys’ prep basketball team received an unexpected telephone call last Thursday.

It was an invitation to attend a social function during the National Basketball Association’s all-star weekend in Toronto.

The invite turned into something the team won’t soon forget, after they had the opportunity to meet Houston Rockets’ all-star guard James Harden up close and personal Friday.

Charles Scott, Colts’ head coach, said the opportunity to meet Harden stemmed from their association with Adidas Canada as they wear Adidas apparel.

“We received a call from their marketing department who informed us that an unnamed NBA player would be on hand for a meet and greet and an opportunity to hang out and get some Adidas gear,” said Scott, who is in his first year in coaching the junior boys’ prep team but served as an assistant with their senior prep team over the last few seasons.

Upon arriving at the Bank of Canada building and being the only team to receive an invite, the group was escorted to the basement area where a media room was arranged and the new models of Adidas bas-

huddled up, Harden came in to lend his support and high fived all of the players.

Meeting and taking pictures with each of the 10 players that showed up for the event, Harden also presented them with a pair of the shoes he would be wearing during Sunday’s allstar game. The players also received some extra apparel from Adidas Canada.

“I really didn’t know what to expect but he talked with me and asked me about my role with the team. He was cool,” Scott said.

She was a pillar in the Markham community as a Directress and Founder of the little red brick schoolhouse at the corner of Main Street, Unionville and Highway #7: The Montessori North School.

She ran the school for thirty-five years.

Fari, as she is affectionately known, was, more than anything else, warm and motherly. Not only to her two children, Minelle and Reza Mahtani, but before that to her two brothers, Farokh and Ferooz as well as so many of the children at the school.

In fact, in recent years, some of the students she taught in the 1970s had come to her school to enroll their own kids, thus ensuring that Fari was teaching generations of Markham residents. Sadly, she will not have the opportunity to bond further with her grandson, Cole, the son of Minelle and Bruce Baum. Many attested to her loving and mindful nature at her memorial held at the Montessori North School on Friday February 5.

Farideh had a very strong bond with the spiritual. She embraced the goodness from all religions and spiritual philosophies; goodness to her was the sum of all religious philosophies. She constantly sought ways to improve her spiritual being.

In her early years, Farideh was often thwarted by the vicissitudes of life: her life took her from Iran to India, Pakistan, Iran again, Britain where she met and married Kishin Mahtani and finally Markham.

Fari leaves behind many people who hold her in high regard and who will always keep her in a warm spot of their hearts. She was unfailingly gracious and it was rare to see her without a smile on her face. Fari took her final breath on the morning of Wednesday the 3rd of February, 2016 at Markham Stouffville Hospital in palliative care, where she received superlative care from the wonderful nurses who treated her with kindness and respect. She will be very missed. With love, her two devoted children, Minelle and Reza Mahtani.

Gib’s greatest love was his family. He received the Gift of Life, a liver transplant in 1994 for a Klatskins tumour. He was blessed by beating all of the odds and living life to the fullest for another 22 years which included downhill and cross-country skiing, tennis, golfing, curling and many trail bike rides. Gib and B.J. enjoyed passing on their passion for family activities to their children and grandchildren. They created a family that loves spending time together.

Ask anyone to describe Gerry Acton and these are just some of the adjectives they would use.

Gerry died in December after a lengthy illness. He was 89. He left behind his wife of 69 years, Betty, sons Keith and Kevin, as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren.

“Some people would say this is an even tougher time for this to happen to dad, around Christmas,” son Keith said in his eulogy.

“Actually, it is very fitting being so close to Jesus’ birth. Dad had tremendous faith and trust in God. His belief never wavered.”

An Uxbridge native, Gerry was the eldest of three children. It was the Depression and Gerry had to leave school in Grade 8 in order to run his family farm.

That work ethic was constant.

Gerry became a contractor then a carpenter, who did a lot of work on homes throughout Stouffville. He also worked on the Silver Jubilee building in downtown Stouffville.

“I’m not going to put my name to that unless it was perfect,” Keith recalled of his father’s tendency to do things right and only right.

and shoot harder because that was not the career for him.

Gerry never played sports, didn’t even boat, swim or fish at the family cottage. But he supported Keith and Kevin’s athletic endeavours.

Betty, who he met at a dance at Musselman’s Lake, was a speed skater. The two boys also participated in the sport for a number of years. Gerry, however, preferred to stand in the cold, all day long, at the finish line, with a stopwatch in hand, timing the races.

He was also a minor hockey manager.

“Intense, conscientious manager for the team,” is how Wilf Morley described him. Wilf and Gerry met in the mid-1960s when their boys played baseball and hockey together. Wilf was a pallbearer at Gerry’s funeral.

“He wanted to contribute with no desire to be recognized,” Keith said in his eulogy. “He didn’t know a lot about (hockey) then.

The only advice he gave to Kevin and I when it came to hockey was don’t smoke, don’t drink and stay away from the puck — you won’t get hurt.”

Donations in his memory were made to minor hockey.

Along with carpentry and being around his family, Gerry also loved to cut the grass.

Wilf recalled there was a day Gerry wanted to cut Keith’s grass. But Keith’s lawnmower was broken. So Gerry had to figure out how to get his rider from Burkholder Street to Mill Street.

Wilf suggested he just drive it over. It took some coaxing, but he did it.

“From that day, I saw Gerry go up Market to Mill Street to cut the grass,” Wilf said. “It was funny.”

His smile and friendship is what Wilf will miss most about Gerry. “Gerry was always the happy guy. I never saw Gerry when he wasn’t happy.”

“I heard someone say he never heard Gerry say a bad word about anybody and I never heard Gerry say a bad word, period,” Wilf said.

He was also generous, selfless.

On his birthday, Gerry would have someone, who also had a birthday in April, help him blow out the candles.

Both Keith and Stouffville United Church’s Rev. Elizabeth Cunningham, recalled times, shortly before Gerry’s death, when they would visit him and Gerry would hold out his frail hand, grasping part of a sandwich, asking that they share it with him.

“There are no ribbons, medals or trophy cabinets. But I’ve never known and will never meet a champion as great as you,” Keith said in his eulogy. That’s because of “your honesty, integrity, work ethic, selflessness, sacrifice, faithfulness, caring and compassion and most of all — your incredible amount of love for all.”
