Cat adoption centre gets set to purr

Construction is now complete on Markham’s new Cat Adoption and Education Centre, located in the Thornhill Community Centre and Library, the city said this week.

The official opening ceremony will take place Feb. 23.

The “storefront” adoption and education centre model was approved by Markham city council in June.

It provides a solution towards reducing cat euthanasia rates in the region with the goal of facilitating more than 200 cat adoptions each year. The CAEC will also provide education See ADOPTION, page 12.

Birders brave ‘fowl’ weather for count Sunday’s downpour may have cut an annual inventory of birds short but there were still more than 175 eagle eyed-bird watchers out in the Rouge on the lookout for feathered friends during the rain.

The Winter Bird Count in the Rouge, in its 13th year, raises awareness of the biodiversity of birds in different locations of the park.

Even though Sunday’s rain meant the usual five-hour event was cut in half, partici-

pants counted about 4,300 birds from about 41 species, said Sheryl Santos, partnering and engagement officer with Parks Canada, which organizes the count with the Toronto Zoo. The find of the day were male and female great horned owls. Owls are often hard to spot because they are so adept at camouflaging themselves. So, to find a male and female together in the downpour was “an amazing find,” Santos said.

Data is used by Parks Canada and is shared with eBird, an online biodiversity database.

What are the odds of this happening?

The Markham family of a sixyear-old boy who shares the name of someone on Canada’s no-fly list becomes a viral sensation in Canada.

Subsequently, his parents receive calls from 17 other families around the country, also with children whose names are the same as those on the list.

One of them, hailing from Markham, has the exact same name as the six-year-old boy and lives only minutes away.

Regardless of the odds, this is exactly what happened this past week after both Adam Ahmeds met with their parents for tea to discuss their sons’ cases and so the two boys could have their photographs taken together in Montreal Canadiens jerseys.

Adam’s story began pretty much the moment he was born and his parents chose the fateful name.

“The first time it happened was when he was six weeks old,” said his mother, Khadija Cajee, who lives in Box Grove Village.

The no-fly list was implemented by the federal government in 2007 to strengthen air travel security on domestic and international flights.

Under the Passenger Protect Program, the government maintains a list of people who may pose an immediate threat to air security if they get on board a flight. If a name matches, the airline checks the person’s government-issued identification to compare the date of birth and gender.

In the following six years, Adam and the rest of his family, including Khadija, were delayed each time they attempted to fly with him.

“We were willing to put up with it because we had no choice,” she added.

But New Year’s Eve proved the breaking point.

Adam and his father, Sulemaan, were on their way to the Heritage Classic, featuring his favourite squad, the Montreal Canadiens, play their hated rivals, the Boston Bruins.

Since then, Sulemaan and Khadija have been interviewed by media organizations all over Canada and the rest of the world, including The New York Times,

Britain’s The Guardian, along with newspapers in Germany, France, Argentina, Portugal and Malta.

In fact, the family has done about three interviews a day since it occurred.

While they have been taking all the attention in stride, Adam has had enough of all the attention.

“He’s a very shy kid…he runs away from reporters now,” his mom said. “At first, he spoke, but then he seemed to say, enough is enough.”

They’ve also become heroes to the 17 other families, many of whom have had it far worse then the Ahmeds, who have yet to miss a flight as a result of the annoyance.

“One mom said her 10-month old was on the list and even had his diaper patted down,” she said.

In a further twist of fate, a woman Khadija went to school with 20-odd years ago also has a child on the list and contacted her recently over Facebook.

Khadija says the family have been pleased with the speed with which the government responded to the news and noted not only has Minister Ralph Goodale contacted the family but Markham-Stouffville MP Jane Philpott also met with them.

“It just shows the power of social media,” she said, explaining how they never received much attention through bureaucratic means.

The government has already removed additional screening for any child under 18, however she added that change doesn’t help the family of the other Adam, who

turns 18 in two months.

“It’s a matter of innocence, not age,” she added.

As for what’s next, although she cringed at being considered “spokespeople” for the issue, Khadija said she did intend to “see the issue through”.

“We’re not laughing it off,” she said. “We’ve been dealing with this for six years. Now that we have been given the opportunity to deal with it at a higher level and doors are open and people are listening.

We want to do it co-operatively.”

One of the wishes of the family is that Canada create a system where names can be removed from the list, as they do in the U.S. They also want date of birth to be added to the list to avoid further issues.

Police in Toronto say they have reason to believe a Toronto man wanted in a fraud investigation dating back more than four years is now living in Markham.

Police say in 2011, a man representing himself as an automotive broker met a woman who was buying a car.

On June 18, 2011, the woman paid the man a large sum of money towards the purchase of a car.

About a month later, the man rented a car from a car

ANDRE MARC ALEUNG, 35 rental agency.

He delivered the rental car to the woman, telling her it was a car he had purchased.

The man was arrested in

October 2011, however he failed to show up for a court appearance, police say.

It’s alleged the suspect has since committed additional similar crimes.

Police said last week they have new information that the suspect lives in the Hwy. 407 and McCowan Road area of Markham.

Andre Marc Aleung, 35, is wanted for theft of a motor vehicle, fraud and two counts of failure to appear in court.

NOTICE OF STUDY COMPLETION The City of Markham has completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) study to identify and prioritize opportunities to improve the management of stormwater within the City.

Improvements may be achieved through the retrofit of existing stormwater management (SWM) facilities and/or through the construction of new SWM facilities in areas that are currently lacking appropriate controls.

The Class EA study determined the preferred alternative solution to provide improved SWM at each of the top priority sites. The preferred solution varies for each site which may include the installation of an oil-grit separator for quality control, the installation of an underground storage tank, the installation of a cooling trench and/or the planting of trees and shrubs to provide temperature mitigation, the expansion of existing SWM ponds and the modification of existing controls at SWM ponds.

A Class EA Project File Report has been prepared documenting the study process, how public and review agency input was considered, and conclusions/recommendations of the study. Shopping tips hard to swallow

mid news of the plummeting value of the loonie and the skyrocketing price of groceries, I’ve been reading articles about how to save at the supermarket.

Sadly, they all seem to include the same tips I’ve heard before and have a hard time following.

Other than the tried and true method of just staying home and, whenever you get hungry, having a glass of water, there are not many ways to avoid buying food.

However, if you know of one, let me know, as in our household we can spend as much as $200 a week on groceries, which puts us in the $10,000 a year range, which kind of makes me lose my appetite whenever I do the math.

As with most of life’s necessities, like breathing, there is not much that can be done here except grin and bear it and keep shopping, with these tips.

1. “Eat before your shop”.

Better yet, eat while you shop!

I’ve seen this several times and wonder if the people who are snacking and grazing their way to the checkout pay for all they have consumed.

You almost think they just push the cart around for a while, eat a bit of this, a bit of that — they always look like a connoisseur, sampling the goods to ensure they are up to their very high standards — and then leave the cart near the front and walk out. Perhaps there needs to be a weigh-in of this type of customer.

“Sir, we’ve been watching you, and by our estimation you’ve eaten two pounds of four varieties of grapes and a pound of peanuts from the bulk section. Please sit on this produce scale and we’ll tally it up.”

2. “Skip the bottled water.”

Your point being? That bottled water is tap water, just tap water from a town other than your town? So why pay for it while also creating plastic waste? OK, fine. But! Bottled water allows us to entertain a certain conspiracy theory, in our own very small way, about government incompetence and/or hidden health hazards created by Big Water. OK, fine.

3. “Price match; use coupons.”

Good idea. However, I think there should be special aisle for people

Bernie O’Neill who use coupons and flyers and do price matching, as they always seem to be holding up the show.

Not that we don’t love these people, and respect and even envy them. It’s just some of us have this thing about using coupons or doing the price matching thing.

Call it pride. Call it foolishness.

Call it impatience. Call it what you will. We just aren’t doing it. Seems we’d rather lose everything and live in a shoebox at the side of the road than go to the cash and hold up the competitor’s flyer and say, “See! See! See this deal on pomegranate juice at your competitor’s?

What’s wrong with you people!”

4. “Look down, since stores place the most expensive items at eye level.” I have a hard time believing this is true, however if things keep going the way they are going, and you see a tall guy crawling through the store on his knees some time in the not-todistant future, that will be me.

5. “Avoid checkout temptations.” As in the opportunity to buy any three gossip magazines for just $10, all featuring a Kardashian on the cover! I’d rather go home and stare at the ceiling.

6. “Shop with a plan.” Despite the shopping apps to make our lives easier, provide us with lists and reminders and point us toward deals, the majority of people I see are still wandering aisle by aisle armed with a list scribbled on the back of an envelope. This is how it should be!

We mosey in there, grab a cart and start browsing around, using the same route we used last week.

I mean, have a plan, a route?

Where’s the fun in that? We are adventurers, explorers, hunters and gatherers, searching for our prey, seeking out our hidden gems. Too much planning takes the sport out of it.

Looks like India is becoming the new junketing destination of choice judging by the flurry of visits there by our politicians.

The Toronto Star recently featured a photo article of Ontario PC leader Patrick Brown astride an elephant while visiting with four fellow caucus members.

Not to be outdone, it has been announced that both our premier and also our mayor along with their respective entourages will be heading there shortly.

At the federal level, ministers and staff are similarly engaged in ongoing foreign trade missions and no doubt other city mayors

with access to tax dollars will be likewise inclined.

While he is over there, I would ask our mayor a small favour. Find the time to stop in at the local call centre and tell them that I’m definitely not in the market for any duct cleaning i.e., please do not call me again. Thanks.

Tax freeze would be more appropriate Re: Outstanding year of achievements for Markham, column by Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Jan. 7.

For 2016, Markham has approved a property tax hike of 2.44 per cent and Mayor Frank Scarpitti and his team are very proud of it.

They say it is one of the lowest amongst 27 GTHA municipalities.

Is there a norm that property taxes should go up every year?

How about 0-per-cent tax increase.

People are losing jobs or not getting any pay increases. Also, inflation is low.

But it is quite likely that employees of the City of Markham are getting pay increases.

So why should property taxes go up? With more houses being built, efficiency for providing services to residents should go up, and result in cost reductions.

Why is the property tax going up every year? Oh yes!

To build expensive structures like the Pan Am Centre at the expense of taxpayers.

Mayor Frank Scarpitti mentions about saving millions of dollars in expenses. So then why the tax increase?

Clothing auction sends SOS for refugee families

Thornhill resident Marissa Wiltshire wants to bring family from Turkey here to Canada.

The family includes a mother, a father and a 10-year-old son.

They are not Wiltshire’s family. But, she strongly feels they could have been her family.

“As somebody who is fortunate to live where we do, I see these stories and understand it easily could be my family ... I can’t bear to see so much suffering and not do something,” she said of so many refugees fleeing from war and needing help.

Wiltshire is a co-founder of S.O.S. – Support Outreach Sponsorships.

A small, dedicated group of six families created S.O.S. to initially bring one refugee family to Thornhill. S.O.S. was created from a collaboration of several alumni of Thornlea Secondary School, along with friends and family members. They teamed up with local businesses from the GTA and JIAS (Jewish Immigrant Aid Service).

The S.O.S. team includes: Wiltshire (née Koss), her sister Nicole Bloom, their mother Lynne Koss and Laura Burnett (née Jacob) — all graduates of Thornlea S.S. The team also includes Michele Murphy and Margarita Papadopolous from Thornhill’s St. Robert Catholic High School, along with Nicole Doray (Vaughan S.S.), Jessica

Kennedy from Hamilton and Jenna Robar from Toronto. Wiltshire spearheaded the team.

S.O.S. is holding a clothing auction at Wiltshire’s alma mater — Thornlea S.S. — Jan. 23. Called the Clothing for a Cause auction, running from 1 to 4 p.m., it will feature new and gently used clothing and accessories for men, women and children. All bids start at $1.

“I hope it brings people together in supporting an important cause,” Wiltshire said.

Thornlea also wants to help S.O.S. with its own school fundraiser for refugees, likely in March or April. The last community fundraiser at Thornlea raised $46,000, Wiltshire said.

To date, the S.O.S. Clothing For A Cause auction has received new garments/ accessories and support from Gossip Accessories, Tom’s Place and ReadySetRecycle, which provided a wardrobe straight off the set of Single Ladies (Season 4).

We're going to feature our really large Air-Chilled Chickens.

To start with, these chickens run loose in really large barns... but by definition these are not free-range because they have no access to the outdoors, not that they’d want it this time of the year anyway. They eat as much or as little as they want, usually a lot, of corn and grain. The air-chilled part refers to the de-feathering process, and after. Rather than using really hot water to remove the feathers and with them, the outside layers of skin, cooler water is used, which leaves the skin, and unfortunately the odd feather, with the bird... a bit of a trade-off really. Then they are left to chilldown in circulating air rather than an ice-bath. A lot of the flavour of poultry comes from the skin, partially explaining why the anemic white chickens you see are generally flavourless, and wet, from the ice-pack. Ours are dry and flavourful... and our guys usually get all the feathers before you do! These chickens average about 5lb in size, give or take, and will feed 6 people easily, and usually more.

ANTALOUPES FROM COSTA RICA

I was about to write a little note about the sad condition of produce pricing, but it would take so long to write and even then I might not have all the facts. In short though, it is a problem emanating from a Californian Heat Wave in the fall, which brought all their crops on early and damaged many. They then had to go early to the next growing area (it's a progressive harvest) which was nowhere near ready, and it's been catch-up ever since, leaving the demand high and the supply low, resulting in very high prices. And to add insult to injury, there's the unfavourable exchange rate! Now, you could be forgiven for thinking that since the failure was in California, the crops from Mexico and Florida would be fine, but not so; the demand puts pressure on these other areas as the prices are bid up in order to get product, and it becomes a continental issue, and maybe further. In truth, there may be some opportunistic pricing involved as well, but let me assure you, not here. We do our best just to get you what you need, and sometimes it's just at our cost, like these cantaloupes. They are very good eating quality, EACH a jumbo - size 9.

Other community programs planned for the CAEC will include anxiety therapy programs, a Junior Vets program and educational involvement with local schools including students enrolled in Veterinary Technician Programs along with volunteering opportunities for Seniors’ and community groups.

For those who have never taken in a pet, the centre will offer a variety of education and information tools about choosing the right pet for their family and the many aspects of animal care.

“With the integrated experience the centre provides, the goal is for more local families to experience the joy of opening their homes to healthy, vaccinated and welladjusted cats in need of a new “forever home”,” said Ward 1 Councillor Valerie Burke, an animal care committee member.

The daily operation of the CAEC and care of cats will be managed by the OSPCA and trained volunteers under the direction of City of Markham staff.

Since the CAEC is not an animal shelter, the intake of unwanted animals will continue to be offered by the OSPCA’s Newmarket shelter.

York Regional Police were called to a Markham condominium Sunday night following reports a 17-year-old girl had been assaulted.

When officers arrived, they found the victim hiding behind the security desk, suffering from obvious injuries, police said.

Officers were directed to a unit in the building, located on Cox Boulevard, where a man, believed to be responsible for the assault, was located and placed under arrest.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment.

Further investigation revealed a man had been controlling the 17-year-old victim and exploiting her as a juvenile prostitute.

Police believe there may be further victims who have not yet come forward.

Police have charged Markham resident Edwin Jack, 20, with multiple offences, including trafficking in persons under 18 years, assault causing bodily harm, sexual assault, procure to have illicit sex under 18, exercising control, direction or influence over a person under 18, and drug trafficking offenses.

He is believed to have been active in the City of London and surrounding areas.

Jack was held in custody and was to appear in a Newmarket court Tuesday.

The sale price of existing detached homes continued to climb in York Region as the Toronto Real Estate Board reported its second best sales result on record for December 2015.

The average price of a detached home in York climbed closer to the $1-million mark with an average of $987,106 in the last month of the year.

In Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill and King Township, the average price of a detached home in December topped $1 million.

Repurposing salvaged wood is a popular trend in the home improvement industry. Not only can using salvaged wood give a home a one-of-a-kind look, but it’s a handy way to incorporate the three Rs of green living into your lifestyle: reduce, reuse and recycle.

Reclaimed wood is often used in flooring, beams, wall treatments, and doors, but it also can be turned into furniture or home accent items. Reclaimed wood adds warmth and historical interest to a home’s decor that newer materials may lack.

Although finding wood that can be salvaged takes time and some legwork, such efforts can quickly pay off. Many businesses are now devoted to reclaimed timber, which can help make the process of finding and using salvaged wood even easier.

Homeowners considering reclaimed wood may be interested to learn that such wood can serve various functions aside from benefitting the planet.

• Match old-growth wood. New regulations may prevent certain species of trees from being cut down. That means it can be challenging to match old wood in a home, particularly if you’re looking to maintain historical value and authenticity. Relying on salvaged wood items can alleviate this concern, ensuring that you can find rare woods that are no longer available brand new.

• Salvaged wood has character. It’s difficult to mimic the natural age marks and character that

older wood may have. Instead of being raised on farms, wood harvested decades ago probably grew in natural environments, making the wood both durable and strong. The colour and grain of salvaged wood may also be unique.

• Look at objects in a new way. Doors are versatile pieces of reclaimed lumber because they’re already flat and rather large. Doors can be turned into headboards, tables or benches. Staircase or porch posts can be turned into candlestick holders, and wood shutters can dress up walls and provide a place to hang artwork and other wall items.

• Reclaimed wood can be found everywhere. Most people do not have to look too far to find wood they can salvage. Check salvage yards, landfills, dumpsters in front of older homes being renovated, or older, unused barns in rural settings.

You also can collect driftwood or discarded shipping crates.

While some reclaimed wood can be used as-is, some pieces may require millwork, including sanding, cutting, shaping, and finishing. If you do not have these skills, you probably will have to hire someone who does.

The Internet is awash with ideas for putting salvaged wood to use. Get inspired and then find the pieces that will fit your project.

Stars win third title of season The Markham Stouffville peewee BB Stars won the 32nd annual Scarborough New Year’s Classic Tournament that culminated with a 2-1 win over the Sudbury Lady Wolves in the final.

It was their third tournament championship of the season to go with a silver.

After losing their first two round-robin games against Scarborough and Sudbury by identical 1-0 scores, the Stars rebounded to blank North York 2-0 in their final round-robin tilt.

That enabled the Stars to advance to the semifinals where they defeated the host Scarborough Sharks 1-0.

Disheartening sure, but a total disaster, no way. That’s how the Markham Royals felt after they came out on the short end of two closely contested outings against two playoff bound teams in their Ontario Junior Hockey League schedule at Markham Centennial Arena last weekend. Against the East Division-leading Trenton Golden Hawks, the Royals saw their streak of procuring at least one point in their last 10 outings come to an end in a 4-2 loss Friday. Trailing 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes and down 2-0 early in the second against a team that is the topranked entry in the Canadian Junior Hockey League weekly top 20 poll, the Royals got back to within a goal when Sean Perichak lit the red light.

But Trenton restored their two-goal cushion just 69 seconds later and added one more before the period concluded to take a 4-1 advantage entering the second intermission.

In a third period that saw Markham apply pressure, their efforts paid off when Brendan Valko scored a power play goal just over six minutes in.

That would be all of the offence the Royals could generate. Markham outshot Trenton 45-30. The Royals then played host to the Aurora Tigers and after mounting a furious third-period comeback to tie the game, surrendered a goal at the buzzer of regulation time to suffer a 5-4 loss. INSIDER: The Royals made one last move prior to the Jan. 10 trade deadline by sending defenceman Shawn Tessier to the North York Rangers in exchange for cash. After being acquired earlier this season from the Burlington Cougars, Tessier had three assists in 12 games.

In 13 games with Lakefield this season, Smith had a 2.94 goals against average and .915 save percentage.

GENERALLY SPEAKING: “I thought we played two good games that could easily have gone our way,” Royals’ defenceman Matt Dunlop said in reflecting on their weekend games. “We just had trouble finding the back of the net. We didn’t get the bounces. We’ve just got to work on the little things, like the mental breakdowns where we had a couple in the third period that cost us the game against Aurora.

“Going forward we have to put those two games behind us and move on and learn from the little mistakes. That’s what we’re working towards going into the playoffs.”

Sam Rippey was a legend among firefighters

The town halls in Newmarket and Aurora as well as the Central York Fire Services stations are honouring the 83-year-old retired Newmarket fire chief who passed away yesterday at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

Many firefighters looked up to the man who has been described as a firm, but reasonable man to work for and, like many, former CYFS fire Chief John Molyneaux saw him as a role model.

“He was one of a kind and a legend among the firefighters,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to have him as a mentor. He gave me some wonderful opportunities and helped me to become who I became.”

He first met Rippey when he joined the department in 1975 and found there were high expectations of firefighters, but they were fair. He describes Rippey as a man who had a way with words and the talent to balance the needs of taxpayers and firefighters alike.

But not only was he a boss, but also a friend who was a kind and generous man, Molyneaux continued. He was a family man, a father of four and had many friends who

Rippey in 1972 and feels there are three words that sum up the local legend. “I have three ‘F’ words to describe the (former) chief, firm, fair and fun to work with,” he said.

“It was an honour to be associated with him for those years.”

“Sam had a long history with fire services, serving as the first full-time firefighter hired in Newmarket in 1971,” CYFS fire Chief Ian Laing said. “He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his many friends at CYFS and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Rippey began as a volunteer firefighter with the Newmarket Fire Department in June 1964. He initiated Newmarket firefighters joining the International Association of Firefighters and became president of Local 2511 in 1976.

He was promoted to Newmarket Fire Chief in 1978 and was the driving force behind the creation of the dispatch system for the Aurora, East Gwillimbury and Georgina fire departments.

Rippey served from 1964 to 1993 and was the first fire chief of a full-time force in Newmarket.

Last fall, CYFS paid tribute to him at the annual open house where he participated in the celebrations.

Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Rippey.

Weightlifter, 14, makes strong showing

Kezia Romany has no problem carrying a weight on her shoulders.

It’s something the 14-year-old Markham resident enjoys since she was introduced to competitive weightlifting 18 months ago.

A member of the Markham Weightlifting Club where she currently competes in the 48-kg division after making her debut in the 44-kg class, Romany already holds six provincial lifting records while competing in those two categories.

The Grade 9 St. Brother Andre Catholic High School student recently earned a berth on the Ontario weightlifting team that will compete at the junior national championships in Regina this weekend.

Romany punched her ticket to the championships after meeting several qualifying markers at a junior provincial meet last month.

“It was great to have a goal like breaking the records to work towards, and it’s definitely rewarding,” she said.

“But it’s just a small step.

“I hope to place on the podium at this competition, and I have a fair shot at it.

I’m just going to give 100 per cent and let my training pay off.”

Romany’s introduction to weightlifting stemmed from her involvement in crossfit training.

While working out at CrossFit Markham, the facility introduced a weight-

lifting club.

Doing some weightlifting as a regimen of her crossfit and hearing about the club, Romany asked the weightlifting coach if she could give it a try.

“At first I liked how much it helped me in crossfit, I really improved my technique and got stronger,” she noted. “Now that my technique has gotten better, I like how you can see your hard work paying off, and to see how much of an improvement I’ve made in the past year and a half.”

Steve Cristini, owner and head coach of CrossFit Markham and who along with Yuki Akell, coaches Romany, was confident she will make her presence felt at the junior nationals.

“If she continues to enjoy the training as much as she does, she can make international competitions,” he said. “She has accomplished so much in a year and a half and she is only 14. By the time she is 18 she should likely be competing at junior Pan Ams and potentially senior Pan Ams.”

Mark was born in Halifax but raised in Markham. As a youth, he was very active in the Markham Minor Hockey Association. As an adult, he settled in the Aurora/Newmarket area and worked as a chef at St. Andrew’s Valley Golf Club for over 20 years. He focused on establishing his home, raising his daughter, and being a soccer dad.

He will be remembered for his enthusiasm for golf, reading and computer games, his unique sense of humour and hearty laugh, his readiness to lend a hand or offer advice, his appreciation of debate, his love for his family and reverence for his parents. Most notably, he will be remembered for his deep devotion and dedication to the light of his life - his daughter Avery.

His family will receive friends at the Dixon Garland Funeral Home, 166 Main Street North (Markham Road), Markham on Friday, January 22, 2016 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. A service will be held at St. Patrick’s, 5633 Hwy 7, Markham on Saturday, January 23rd at 11 a.m. with a reception immediately following in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mark’s memory to the Hospital for Sick Children would be greatly appreciated.
