Rain can’t douse Pan Am enthusiasm By Jeremy Grimaldi
jgrimaldi@yrmg.com
Almost a 1,000 people turned out Saturday to witness the Pan Am torch convoy arrive in Markham as the Games’ start date edges ever closer.
Residents celebrated at a slew of activities that surrounded the torch’s arrival and lighting outside the Cornell Community Centre and Library. Adults did yoga and pilates as youngsters played mini basketball and watched Mexican
dancers show off their colourful dress. “It’s electric down here and everyone is having a good time,” said organizer Heather Atherton, who was happy the rain held off just See ‘WE’, page 13.

The Thornhill Community Centre and Library will soon be home to a clowder of cats. At its June 23 meeting, Markham Council approved the opening of an animal storefront, or Cat Adoption and Education Centre (CAEC) that will run out of the Thornhill centre. “It’s a bold new initiative,” said Councillor Valerie Burke. “It’s very exciting.” The idea to open a CAEC came when the city started looking at ways to increase cat adoptions and lower Markham’s higher than average euthanasia rate. Several residents spoke in favour of the centre when the item came up in general committee earlier this month, and council unanimously supported it during a recorded vote. But not everyone was in favour of the idea at first.
Seniors relocated A group of senior citizens, who are part of the Thornhill Seniors Club wellness program that runs out of the centre, were worried that if the cats came in they would be out. But they were able to relocate their program. “Initially we were worried we would have to cancel some of our days,” said one of the program organizers. “But right now we are happy with the relocation.” Burke said they were able to do some shuffling to accommodate both the cats and the other programs. “We didn’t want to displace anybody,” she said. The new Markham CAEC will be similar to two successful adoption centres in the Niagara and Welland areas. They are both located in retail locations in high traffic areas to help increase adoption rates. According to a staff report, retail locations are too expensive to rent in Markham so staff looked at running the shelter out of a municipally owned property. Additionally, any improvements made to the centre would be an asset for the city. Thornhill Community Centre was a preferred location because of the high number of people who visit the centre, it is furthest away from the local Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) in Newmarket, and there is potential for programs and partnerships with schools, students, seniors and community groups. “I think it will get so many people in the community involved,” Burke said. Some of the programs suggested in the report include reading thera-
py programs, junior vet programs, animal care educational visits and anxiety therapy. Thronhill also has a high proportion of Markham’s licensed pet owners. The proposed room is used for a spin cycle class. According to the report, the room is located in the recently expanded upper atrium, has a separate entrance and is selfcontained with a key lock door. The centre will be fitted with a separate HVAC unit. The OSPCA will manage the operation of the centre, which will be home to no more than 17 healthy and adoption ready cats. According to the report, during
the 2014 budget process council approved $150,000 for the implementation of the centre, $100,000 for annual operating costs and $50,000 for capital start-up.
OWN HVAC UNIT The capital costs for the CAEC are just over $115,000 leaving approximately $65,000 shortfall. Markham’s Animal Care Committee has raised over $30,000 for animal services and has committed those funds to the centre. The remaining shortfall will be funded from the non-development charge contingency. The annual budget will be about $99,000 with one full-time and one
part-time staff member hired by the OSPCA. Volunteers will be recruited from both the city and the OSPCA. Staff and the animal care committee are currently looking at potential sponsorships and will be accepting donations.
Need event publicized? e-mail info to boneill@yrmg. com
Staff is also looking at perusing a possible adoption fee revenue sharing arrangement with the OSPCA. Burke said the centre should be ready later this year. Staff will report back to council three years after it opens.

Here are ‘smart’ commute options
We’re slow to act on saving turtles
ot tickets to see a Pan Am Games event and wondering how to get there and where to park? Or you just worried about getting back and forth to work over the next few weeks with the 10,000 athletes and officials, and 250,000 spectators and visitors expected on the roads around Pan Am sites? Smart Commute Markham Richmond Hill has some timely advice: rethink your commute. Smart Commute is a sustainable transportation program of the municipalities of Markham and Richmond Hill, Region of York and Metrolinx. Its aim is to help York employers and commuters explore different commute choices such as carpooling, cycling and transit. The organization’s overall goal to “ease gridlock, improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while making your commute less expensive and more enjoyable” is even more vital and opportune with the Pan Am Games almost upon us — especially as Markham has two Pan Am venues. Here are the suggestions. • Shift your workday to avoid peak rush hours. If you try getting in to work a half hour or an hour earlier, perhaps you can leave an hour earlier, too, avoiding the worst 9 to 5 rush hour crush on our roads. • Ask your boss if you can work a compressed work week, i.e. more hours over fewer days. • If you are a boss or supervisor, try scheduling more conference calls instead of face-to-face meetings that involve managers or staff driving time; and encourage telework options for employees. • Form a carpool at work so there are fewer vehicles on the road and you can use the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes that now are dedicated for three people or more. • Take transit to work for the next few weeks and/or cycle for all or part of the commute. Remember, all VIVA and YRT buses have a bike carrier available for people who want or need to cycle part of their commute to and from work,
Re: Slow down at ‘turtle crossing’, residents urge drivers, June 25. I think we should be much more worried about those people who are poaching turtles for turtle soup. I previously resided on a street where there are large ponds and many turtles. A van was occasionally spotted trolling the area. One day I saw the van stop and two men jumped out, ran to the side of the road and picked up a very large turtle (shell looked about 18 inches in diameter) and threw it in a container in the back of their van. I yelled out the window at them to put it back, then did a U-turn to follow them, but they sped off recklessly. I believe there are many turtle poachers in York Region, since turtle soup is popular in some cultures.
G
Marney Beck but use transit for the other portion. • Use real-time travel apps and download local traffic plans to help you find the best routes and avoid road closures. Smart Commute points out that commuters who work or live near Pan Am/Parapan Am competition venues can expect to experience heavier traffic volumes in the area due to temporary traffic changes and more people travelling throughout the area. If you live or work near a Games competition venue, you can download the traffic plan for your area to help you plan ahead. Roads primarily affected around the Atos Markham Pan Am Centre include: Warden Avenue from Hwy. 407 to Hwy. 7; Enterprise Boulevard from Warden to Kennedy Road; and Kennedy from Hwy. 407 to Hwy. 7. Angus Glen Golf Club roads affected by extra Pan Am traffic include Major Mackenzie Drive between Hwy. 404 and Kennedy; Elgin Mills Road between 404 and Kennedy; Warden between Major Mack and Elgin Mills; and Kennedy from Major Mack to Elgin Mills. Even if you are not located close to a venue, your commute can still be affected by those commuters choosing to re-route around competition venues. Perhaps you, like me, didn’t know there is a “local traffic plan” for Markham’s Angus Glen Golf Club or the Atos Markham Pan Am Centre, but there is. There’s a Smart Commute Tool to help you with your commute, plus a Triplinx Transit Planner and even a 2015 Games Trip Planner and a Toronto2015 Pan Am Games Mobile App. Find out more at www.smartcommute.ca/markham-richmond

What happened to pride of ownership?
I think there should be stiff penalties for such activity, and it should be illegal to serve it in restaurants, similar to shark-fin soup. We need public awareness to make consumption of turtle soup socially unacceptable, or soon the beautiful turtles in our environment will be gone.
I have been a Unionville resident for over 25 years and have always been so proud to call Unionville my home. Properties were maintained and lawns manicured. However, in the recent past things have drastically changed. Houses are being bought and sold, “for lease” signs appear and many properties are left abandoned. Lawns and gardens are growing wild and pride of ownership seems to have gone by the wayside. For me, it’s such a troubling sign and a very slippery slope.

NOTICE OF STUDY COMMENCEMENT
Qualified Participants Needed for Technology Field Test
between Steeles Avenue and Elgin Mills Road City of Markham and Town of Richmond Hill
Participants will be given a FREE in-office demonstration, and the opportunity to evaluate the latest, most advanced hearing aid technology for 30 days at drastically reduced rates. A refund* is available at the end of the test period if you feel your test aids do not improve your hearing. A full range of sizes are available in this new technology, including the exceptionally di discreet scr t and a award winning “designRITE” and IIC models shown here:
The study will review the growth along Bayview Avenue and potential improvements needed to accommodate the existing and future transportation needs along the corridor.
Elgin Mills Road
Major Mackenzie Drive
16th Avenue
The study is being conducted in accordance with the planning and design process for Schedule C projects as outlined in the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process.
Similar to choosing between contact lenses or glasses, you can decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid style would best suit you. Both styles have approximately the same performance and functions, but are fitted to the ear differently.
It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! The new designRITE and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet designRITE hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid--now with wireless technology--provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

Extortion charges against officer withdrawn By Pam Douglas
pdouglas@thebramptonguardian.com
A York Regional Police constable is back at work after extortion charges against him were withdrawn four months after they were laid by Peel cops. The Crown withdrew the charges against York Sgt. Gurdip Panaich, 39, of Brampton. Assistant Crown Amber Lepchuk told the court there were “no reasonable prospects of conviction” and that the allegations did not meet a “criminal code standard,” according to Danielle Robitaille, partner at Henein Hutchison LLP. Sgt. Panaich had been under suspension pending the outcome of the charges.
“(He) was very grateful for the Crown’s review of the matter,” Robitaille told the court. “He was devastated by the charges, which received significant media and community attention. Sgt. Panaich continues to deny the allegations and, in any event, the allegations do not meet the criminal standard. Sgt. Panaich is very anxious to return to his career in public service.” Panaich was one of five men accused of trying to extort money from Brampton real estate agent Dale Mundi using an Internet smear campaign that attacked his personal and professional reputation, according to police. The five were charged by Peel Regional Police this past March after a com-

plaint from Mundi in February. The other four men charged in the case will be back in court next week. Panaich joined the force in 2001 as a uniformed patrol officer before being assigned to the criminal investigations unit, the mental health support team and the major case management unit. He was most recently stationed in Markham. Panaich has won awards for his work, including for an investigation into a forged passport lab and a chief of police award for supporting a wounded U.S. officer. In 2013, York Police awarded him an excellence in policing award. — with files from Jeremy Grimaldi and Torstar News Service

York Regional police have arrested a 19-year-old Ajax man in connection with a Markham bank robbery. On June 2 at around 1 p.m., officers responded to a bank robbery in the area of Hwy. 407 and Ninth Line after a man entered the bank and approached a teller with a note demanding money. The man was unsuccessful and left the bank in a Chevrolet Cobalt with tinted
windows. No one was injured. Investigators executed a search warrant on June 30 at a residence in Ajax and charged a suspect in connection with the robbery in Markham and an additional bank robbery June 1 in Toronto. Nickolous Valiagas is charged with two counts of robbery and possession of a controlled substance. He was set to appear in court June 30.
Investigators from the Hold-Up Unit remind business owners of the importance of maintaining and updating video surveillance equipment. Quality images help identify suspects, can aid in arrests and during court proceedings. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6631, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com.

How families can prepare for downsizing to smaller homes
Percy Fulton Ltd., Brokerage
hard to accumulate or cherish for various reasons. A downsizing system can make that initial period less uncomfortable, especially if family members are together on the first day of downsizing. Let each family member take a turn choosing an item to sell, donate or discard, and continue so family members know everyone is in it together. Once kids have seen that everyone is making sacrifices, they are more likely to embrace downsizing. • Begin in the attic, basement and garage. Downsizing to a smaller home often means less storage space, and attics, basements and garages tend to serve as in-house storage units where seldom-used items accumulate over time. When trying to choose which items won’t be coming along to their smaller homes, families can start in their current homes’ attics, basements and garages, looking for items that take up too much space or those that will serve no practical purpose at their new homes. For example, that snow blower in the garage may be a godsend when the time comes to clear your expansive current driveway of another storm’s worth of snow, but it might not be worth the space it takes up if your next home has a short driveway or just on-street parking. Once
rooms used primarily for storage have been cleaned out, you can then move on to other rooms in the house to find items that won’t be going with you. Look to sell, donate or discard items that will not serve much purpose at your next home. • Don’t just discard, donate or sell. One of the hidden benefits of downsizing to a smaller home is the chance to make some money by selling those items you won’t be needing after you move into your new digs. Schedule a yard sale and give ample notice to neighbours or fellow community members so you can get as much as possible for the items you no longer need. If money is no object, donating your unwanted items to a local Goodwill store or another charity is a great way to ensure your possessions find their way into the homes of people who truly need them. When getting rid of personal items, only discard those items that are no longer functional. If they can still serve a purpose, then someone can benefit from using them. • Promise to revisit the decision down the road after moving. Families who are downsizing for a lifestyle change as opposed to out of economic need can promise to revisit the decision together in the future. Families may

Whether it’s out of economic need, or preferring to live a simpler lifestyle, families moving into smaller homes has been a trend over the past several years. Families about to downsize to smaller homes may find the task ahead of them daunting, but there are some ways to make the transition to less spacious residences go more smoothly. • Discuss downsizing with kids. In many ways, youngsters adapt to change better than adults. But it’s still a good idea for parents to explain downsizing to their children before they begin to prepare for their transitions to smaller living spaces. Kids who understand the reasons behind downsizing are more likely to embrace the move, while those who have not been involved in the process may find it more difficult to adjust. When the time comes to begin choosing items to discard, allow children to choose which of their items they will not be keeping. Respect their decisions, exercising patience if kids are initially reluctant or don’t seem to understand that you are moving to a smaller home. • Design a downsizing system. It is not uncommon for families to be lukewarm when the initial process of downsizing begins, as people are understandably hesitant to discard items they worked

lowing questions: • Do I like the communal aspect of condominium living? • Can I afford to pay monthly condo fees? • Am I prepared to contribute to how the condominium is run and governed? • Do I understand responsibilities of owning a condo? • Am I looking for amenities? “Condo fees are definitely an important consideration, but there’s a bigger picture to look at,” says Verge. “In short, you need to know what you’re paying for, what you can expect from condo living and how important the condo amenities are to you.”
Some other items to discuss with your Realtor include: • The number of parking spaces and locker units that come with the unit; • The number of rental versus owned or commercial units in the building; • The rules and regulations of the condo, including pet policies; • Insurance policies.

Tribute was paid in more ways than one to the man responsible for bringing a hospital to Markham, as the Pan Am Torch wound its way through the city. It was in 1967 that golf course developer, athlete and philanthropist Arthur Latcham decided that rather than build another 18 holes, he would donate his 50 acres, near Hwy. 7 and Ninth Line, to build a hospital for Markham and his beloved Stouffville. On Saturday, it was his son, Bob, who was chosen by the city to light the torch and be the first to run in front of 1,000 cheering supporters at the Cornell Community Centre. When his portion was complete, he explained just how special it was that he was selected to be the first Markham torchbearer. “I am just proud to be able to have his name remembered,” he said, noting his father used to be a much more widely celebrated figure. Harking back to his father’s birth in 1895, Bob told the story of a sophisticated man who came from a meagre beginning to eventually claim the Order of Canada. After joining the cavalry in the Second World War, Bob told how Arthur, a celebrated runner and accomplished magician, came back to Toronto to work as a streetcar operator before buying two tenements, joining them together and making the Inglewood Arms Hotel, which remains to this day on Jarvis Street. Soon after, he would marry Bob’s mother and adopt him as his own. Arthur’s career would eventually flourish as he began building houses in Etobicoke, creating large parts of the highly sought-after neighbourhood The Kingsway. “He named many of the streets in the area, like Prince Edward Drive,” he said. “I remember once how he told a radio show that he wasn’t much into religion, so he named them after monarchs.” When he retired from the housing business after being injured by a bulldozer, he grew bored and decided to start building golf courses. His work would eventually result in the creation of a number of successful clubs, including Meadowbrook on Warden Avenue in Gormley. Bob explained that Arthur eventually decided that his hometown of Stouffville and neighbouring Markham needed a hospital and pledged to hand over the land. His one stipulation was that Stouffville be included in the hospital’s name. Arthur’s philanthropic help didn’t stop there. He also

Torchbearer Robert Latcham carries the flame from the Cornell Community Centre. built community centres in Stouffville, Goodwood and Port Perry and donated a grandstand and art gallery in Stouffville. He also purchased local one-room school houses, donating them to senior citizens as recreation halls. Bob paid tribute to his father, saying he was responsible for helping him become the man he is today. “If it wasn’t for my father, I wouldn’t have had the exceptional life that I had,” he said. “He did so much for this area, he devoted a lot of time and energy to it.” He also expressed gratitude to the organizers who selected him. “I was so surprised when they called me,” he exclaimed. To honour Arthur’s commitment to his community, a plaque in his name remains at Stouffville’s Memorial Park. The Latcham Society also continues in its quest to support the hospital. For more information regarding the society, call Jan Black at 905472-7394 or email jblack@msh.on.ca.
‘We have a diverse community and residents are supporting athletes from all over’ Although it’s always a special time when the torch arrives in any area, the arrival in Markham is significant because the city is hosting a number of events and has a great contingent of big name athletes representing the city and country. They include track and field athlete Phylicia George, badminton player Michelle Li, trampoline athlete Karen Cockburn and sprinter Andre De Grasse. “We have a diverse community and residents are supporting athletes from all over,” said Karen Hugh, a youth council supervisor, who helped young volunteers

Will NHL dream Being Leafs’ top pick dream come true be revived in Markham? BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA
mhayakawa@yrmg.com
By Laura Finney
lfinney@yrmg.com
Could an NHL team still come to Markham? It may feel a little like déjà vu, but last Wednesday, Graeme Roustan, CEO of GTA Sports and Entertainment said in an interview with The Hockey News that he intends to make a pitch for an NHL team in the GTA, and that he would revisit the idea of going to Markham. “I will definitely be making an application on behalf of the GTA,” he said. “I’ve always believed that a second NHL team in Toronto would flourish and I’ve been preparing since 2010 for this possibility.” When contacted by the Markham Economist & Sum, a Roustan spokesperson said Roustan would not be giving further media interviews. But Markham councillor Karen Rea said she would not support using any public money to build an arena in Markham. “I’m not interested in putting any taxpayers’ money into an NHL arena, because there is no proof that it would be viable,” she said. In 2012, a 20,000-seat arena was first proposed with the support of Mayor Frank Scarpitti by Roustan in a public-private partnership that would see the city securing financing to build the NHL-size arena in Markham’s new downtown centre. However after public objections, councillors voted not to put public money behind the project. “Markham city council made it perfectly clear in December 2013 that we are not interested in a publicly funded arena,” said Rea. But she noted she would not be against a team coming to Markham, if it was privately funded. “The majority of people are OK with having an NHL arena and an NHL team providing it’s privately built, owned and operated,” she said. Rea has been pushing for the release of consultants’ reports on the failed arena project that cost Markham taxpayers more than $700,000. If there is a renewed effort to bring a team to the city, it will be expensive. Along with arena costs, which Rea said would be about $500 million, the cost of a franchise could be around $500 million. Additionally, she said, they would have to buy the land, pay development fees and property taxes. “If somebody wants to come in here with $1.2 billion, you are more than welcome,” she said. Last week, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement that the league is opening an expansion review process to consider whether to add new franchises. He cited Las Vegas, Seattle and Quebec City as the markets that have expressed the most serious interest, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper has given his support to Quebec. Many view a team in Markham as unlikely given its close proximity to Toronto, home of the Maple Leafs. The league hasn’t made decisions on a timeline, terms of expansion or the number of clubs to be added. The NHL doesn’t anticipate adding teams before the 2017-18 season, according to Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. - With files from TorStar News Service
Growing up in Thornhill, Mitch Marner said his favourite National Hockey League team was the Toronto Maple Leafs. To this day, the 18-year-old Markhamborn Marner remains partial to the blue and white. Especially after he was the fourth player chosen overall in the first round by the Maple Leafs during the NHL’s annual entry draft in Sunrise, Fla. Friday. To be on the cusp of playing for the Maple Leafs, he said, is like a dream come true. “There’s no words to describe it,” an elated Marner said during a news conference on the Maple Leafs’ website.
‘BEST FAN BASE’ “Growing up in the Toronto area everyone is a Leafs’ fan. You have to vote for your team and I was a Leafs’ fan. They (Maple Leafs) have the best fan base in the league and I’m happy to be a part of it. “Obviously the last few years haven’t been the way Leaf fans wanted it. But in the next few years we will work hard. We have a lot of upside and I can’t wait to be a part of it. “To put on the Leaf jersey — I’m speechless.” A first-round draft pick of the London Knights where he was the 19th player selected overall in the 2013 Ontario Hockey League priority selection, the five-foot, 11-inch forward amassed 44 goals and 82 assists in 63 regular season games this past season with London and was second overall in league scoring. While those numbers warranted some attention by the NHL clubs entering this year’s entry draft, Marner was also the recipient of the OHL’s Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy as the OHL’s top scoring right winger this past season. During the season, he was the OHL’s Player of the Week on three different occasions. Ironically it was Mark Hunter, Maple Leafs director of player personnel who selected Marner when he served as general manager with London. “If you had told me he (Hunter) would
‘To put on the Leaf jersey — I’m speechless, says thrilled Mitch Marner of Markham, after being Toronto Maple Leafs’ top pick during the NHL draft. have drafted me in the OHL and the NHL I wouldn’t have believed it,” Marner said.
‘NEVER BEEN HAPPIER’ “But now that I standing here I’m wearing a Leaf jersey, I’ve never been happier in my life.” While glad to be reunited with Hunter, Marner was quick to praise him along with his brother Dale, who served as the club’s head coach and was a former NHL player, in enhancing his career to the point where he was among the top prospects to be chosen in this year’s NHL entry draft. “Mark has been with me since Day One. He picked me when I was five-foot five, 120 pounds. He had no doubt in me then. “To play in London, you learn a lot of skills you didn’t have going in. You learn offence and defence and Dale Hunter is a special guy. You learn something new from him every day.” In being the Maple Leafs’ first-round pick and acknowledging the club is in somewhat of a rebuilding mode, Marner hopes he can crack their roster when the
2015-16 NHL campaign begins. “That’s the goal for me,” he said. “If not, I have a great organization (London Knights) to go back to. “It’s up to them (Maple Leafs).” Taking part in his first NHL entry draft as the Maple Leafs’ director of player personnel, Hunter is quite familiar with what Marner can bring to the table and feels they have what they wanted. “I’ve watched him all along and I know what he’s all about. He has character, he has skill and his hockey sense is exceptional. He’s a young man who creates scoring chances for his teammates and himself. He has a great will to win. We’re happy as an organization to get him,” Hunter said. While hinting Marner might not be ready to make the immediate big jump to the Maple Leafs’ roster, Hunter feels he’s not far off. Especially with the work ethic he exhibits. “He needs some growth to his game yet,” Hunter said. “He’s not the finished product yet. But we know he will get better because he’s hungry.”
NHL Sabres place Markham’s Hodgson on waivers Cody Hodgson’s days as a member of the Buffalo Sabres are over. The Sabres placed the 25-year-old Markham resident on waivers for the purpose of buying out his contract, the National Hockey League announced on its website Monday. Under NHL rules, the buyout period concludes Tuesday and teams have to send players through the 24-hour waiver process before conducting the transaction. A first-round pick of the Vancouver Canucks and 10th player chosen overall
in the 2008 NHL entry draft, the six-foot, 192-pound Hodgson was acquired by the Sabres part way through the 2011-12 season. This past season, Hodgson had just six goals and seven assists in 78 regular season contests and was relegated to a fourth-line role and on occasion was a healthy scratch from the lineup. That was a far cry from the 2013-14 season in which he was the club’s leading scorer with 20 goals and 24 assists in 72 regular season tilts. Because Hodgson is under 26 years
of age, he was bought out at one-third of his salary. The website war-on-ice.com, cited Hodgson had four years remaining on his current six-year contract and was due $19 million (U.S.). Should no one claim Hodgson on waivers, the buyout would cost the Sabres $6.33 million U.S. The website www.spotrac.com cited Hodgson will be on Buffalo’s books for $1.04 million this season, $541,667 the following year and $41,667 in 2017-18. — Michael Hayakawa

People were drawn to Allison Zeppieri By Jeremy Grimaldi

hen you entered a room with Allison Zeppieri in it, you knew it. “She had a very striking personality, not to mention her beauty,” her father, Frank, said. “People were just drawn to her. She was a charming young woman.” These were far from her only qualities, according to Frank, who further explained how sensitive, creative and caring she was with her family and friends. “She was always writing letters, she was really great at expressing herself,” he added. “She loved people and she could laugh at herself, so people really loved her.” However, Frank noted with a chuckle, if you were to watch Allison playing hockey, you may never know any of that. Until the age of 13, Allison played with the boys and only began playing with girls teams in her teenage years. When on the ice, he said, she was both determined and intense. Relaying one story, he explained how during a game in Grade 8 while playing with boys, she would eventually become fed up with one player who would not stop taunting her. Although he said she managed to keep away from him most of the game, she finally had enough and body checked him so hard that he was left lying on the ice for five minutes. She was subsequently suspended for the rest of the season.

It was this intensity and her skill level that allowed Allison to get letters of intent for hockey scholarships from Ivy League universities, including Princeton. “Her coaches loved her, she would go out there and do anything they asked of her,” he said. “In the end though, she just wasn’t really that into it all.” Frank said her real passion was art, explaining just how creative she was, searching for examples of her handwriting, which he said was flawless, a work of art in itself. These were just some of the qualities that more than 800 people turned up to celebrate at her funeral, which took place days after her passing on June 7. “I will remember her love and smile the most,” he said. “Father’s Day was especially rough for me, this is something that will be with me for the rest of my life. It’s hard to lose any child. It’s very tough to accept, she had her whole future ahead of her.” Allison died after struggling with an eating disorder and the mental health issues she endured during the past several years. She died after complications relating to those disorders, according to Frank. He said he wanted to warn others of the dangers of eating disorders and urged parents to better understand what is going on with their children, noting that some trends can have fatal consequences. “I think it’s an important thing to be aware of and recognize,” he said. “You hear about it, but you
