Is there a Markham bid for new NHL team? By LAURA FINNEY

However the man behind a failed NHL arena bid in Markham has received the bid paperwork for a team in the Toronto area. When the NHL first announced last month it would be looking at expansion, Graeme

The new national park on Markham’s eastern edge is getting bigger. On Saturday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited Pickering and announced that 21 sq. km. in Pickering and Ajax will be added to Rouge National Park, doubling the government’s contribution to the park. “Today’s announcement will provide families across the Greater Toronto Area and visitors from coast to coast to coast with more opportunities to enjoy Canada’s great outdoors,” said Harper. “The expansion of Rouge National Urban Park will also ensure current and future generations of Canadians remain connected with an important part of Canada’s rich natural and cultural heritage.” The new lands are part of the Pickering Airport land that was expropriated by the federal government in the 1970s and will increase the boundaries of the park by more than 36 percent, making it one of the largest parks of its kind in North America. With this addition, when the park is established it will be just under 80 sq/km, making it 19 times larger than Stanley Park in Vancouver and 22 times larger than Central Park in New York City. According to the federal government, the new lands will include forests, meadows, streams, creeks, important archaeological sites, and large tracts of farmland. The Rouge National Urban Park Act was passed by the House of Commons in January and came into force in May.
But, the creation of the National Park has come with controversy. Ontario, which owns part of the park, has not turned its land over, saying it is concerned environmental protections put forth by the federal government are not enough. Those concerns have been shared by other groups, such as the Friends of the Rouge Watershed. “The expansion of the national Rouge Park is welcome news,” said Kevin O’Connor FRW president in a press release. “Now, the federal government should amend the terribly weak Rouge National Urban Park Act to prioritize ecological integrity and properly protect these irreplaceable public park lands for current and future generations.” Harper said the park will be protected. “The new Rouge National Urban Park will have the highest level of environmental protection. It will also allow the farmers who have been responsible stewards here for more than a century to continue to work this land, as is only fair. There is no excuse for anyone not to get behind the Rouge National Urban Park because that is what the people of the GTA want,” he said. Transport Canada will retain about 36 sq. km. kilometres for economic development including a potential airport. On Monday, after meeting with local stakeholders, Minister Lisa Raitt said she will name an independent advisor over the next few months, who will meet with local interests on potential economic development opportunities around a future airport.

CHERRIES BANDSTAND The cherry season is winding down, and these are probably the last of the large size product from Montana. The variety is ‘Lapin’, and these are sweet and firm. The size is ‘9-row’, which signifies how many cherries will fit into a specific dimension, so the smaller number is better, and this is a critical concern in buying cherries because the smaller sizes are usually much less in demand, and hence, much cheaper. The reason is that the pit of a cherry of any size is similar, so go big, and you’ll find that life is not ‘the pits’! Enjoy these... Featured at /LB

When I think of pickerel, I think of my friend, Jim Brown. An excellent fisherman, Jim would always take me out on Lake Muskoka to try and catch these, which were his personal fave. I would never have as much luck as he would (I’ll stick to making pizza), and when we’d go to his cottage to feast, he’d dredge thin pieces of them in pancake batter and fry them up. Featured at
LEMON MOUSSE CAKES - I happened to see one of these in the bakery last week and it really caught my eye, I asked Jaana if it tastes as good as it looks and her reply was: “It tastes even better than it looks!” We make an absolutely delicious mousse using fresh lemon juice and zest, egg yolks, sugar and whipped cream, and a bit of Limoncello liqueur to round out the flavors. Then we layer it with white cake, and finish with more mousse, white chocolate shavings and little lemon candies. $24.95 LEMON MOUSSE - If you want to go even lighter, we also offer the Lemon Mousse by itself without the cake part, piped into ramekins. When you return the ramekin, you get a $.75 deposit back. $4.50 LEMON LOAVES - Poundcake-type loaf made with just egg, butter, sugar, flour, buttermilk and lots of fresh lemon, of course. My summer’s going to the dogs
I
enjoyed a needed vacation last week and basked in perfect summery weather, relaxing at the beach over a good 1,000-page novel at my favourite park in Ontario, or maybe Canada — Sandbanks. But I couldn’t help thinking that my week had revolved around four-legged animals, specifically dogs. I had planned a short vacation retreat at a resort in historic Prince Edward County — or “The County” as locals call it. For decades, my father and our extended family enjoyed a family farm in Picton and so for both my adult daughter and myself, summer isn’t summer without a stay in The County and beach time at Sandbanks. Since the farm was sold after my father’s death, we now are among the hoards of tourists who flock to resorts, cabins, trailer parks and campgrounds in the area. After weeks of negotiations with my daughter, involving the work schedule of her boyfriend (guess he’s officially her “partner” as they are now living together) and, most importantly, the care of their two dogs, the dates were set and the resort room booked. As dogs aren’t allowed at the resort, part of the vacation deal involved our daughter’s dog, Bruno, and the partner’s dog, Alaska, staying at a “Pet Hotel” — aka our Richmond Hill home. My husband and son had mixed feelings about their sudden dog-care duties. Bruno was part of our family for almost two years when our daughter lived at home and worked in Aurora; they were a package deal. But when she worked or visited every weekend with her boyfriend, Bruno became the walking, feeding, playtime responsibility of the rest of our family. So despite some protests, I knew both my husband and son were pleased to dig out the dog toys and welcome Bruno back home for a brief stay. Alaska, a girl dog, was an unknown houseguest. She and Bruno have become doggy pals now that their human parents live together, but she’d never stayed

Marney Beck overnight in our home. At any rate, with tales wagging and then with brief howls of protest when my daughter and her partner left to head to Sandbanks, they settled in to our home. There were more howls of protest when I headed out the door too, loaded down with coolers and bags. At any rate, I drove to The County, met my daughter and her partner at the beach for a picnic lunch, and was then informed that they had to return to the GTA that very day for a very good reason. “I have a job interview!” she announced. After many months of unemployment and job searching, this was welcome news — as any parent of a young person this day and age would agree. And, while not what I had envisaged after paying for four years of university education, it was an assistant manager job at a pet store — perfect for the passionate pet owner and animal lover that she is. The next day, while lounging in the sand watching families cavort in gentle waves, I received a happy text: “I got the job!” Upon my return home, I learned that my husband and son had survived their dog-sitting duties quite well. The only damage done was to a couple of plants in the back garden, trampled by an excited Alaska trying to capture one of many squirrels. When my good friend in Newmarket called that same week to tell me her new York Region Pet Services business was doing well, describing with humour the Rottweilers, cats and other pets she was caring for, I decided that my week really was going to the dogs, but in a good way.
Cat care cost is a joke What about fate of Re: Feline fans feel frisky as existing cat shelter? cat adoption centre OK’d, July 2. Please tell me it’s a typo. Surely Markham council didn’t agree to spend up to $200,000 to house a maximum of 17 cats at the Thornhill Community Centre? Your July 9 issue reported that council budgeted up to $100,000 to implement this project and remodel a small room at the centre, including air conditioning for the cool cats (apparently not needed when seniors were using that room) and $100,000 a year, for starters, to run it. They’re joking, right? Unfortunately, given this council’s history of careless use of taxpayers’ money, its decision to give priority to cats over Markham’s many more pressing needs means the joke’s on us.

Re: Feline fans feel frisky as cat adoption centre OK’d, July 2. While it is encouraging to read that Markham has, at last, taken notice of the fate of the cats picked up in the city, many of whom are euthanized, the method chosen should be questioned. Markham has chosen the most expensive option in providing a new, paidstaffed outlet to increase adoptions. There are local volunteer organizations in Markham, which are already rescuing and adopting-out stray cats. The largest is North Toronto Cat Rescue (NTCR), which has run a no-kill shelter in Markham for the last seven years. In the last two years, 300 cats have been adopted from this shelter at no expense to the taxpayer. NTCR runs as a regis-

The cats are housed without cages and are fed and vetted while they await adoption. To make matters worse, North Toronto Cat Rescue will soon be forced to close, as its shelter is scheduled for demolition to allow for more new housing. It is difficult to understand the choice behind the possibility of losing an already running and proven volunteer shelter for an outlet employing paid staff and only housing 17 cats.

Anyone driving in Markham, take note. The York Regional Police collision reporting centre is no longer at Hillcrest Mall. The YRP Community Resource Centre, the place to report minor motor vehicle collisions occurring in Vaughan, Richmond Hill, or Markham — involving less than $1,000 in damages — is now at 10720 Yonge St. at the southwest corner of Yonge and Elgin Mills Road in Richmond Hill. A damaged vehicle collision may be reported at the Community Resource Centre if it does not involve: • danger to motorists at the scene of the collision; • personal injury; • any criminal activity, such as impaired driving or stolen vehicles; • a government vehicle of any kind; • a vehicle which is transporting dangerous goods; • damage to third-party property, such as a parked car; • damage to private, municipal or highway property; • a pedestrian or cyclist; or

Shawn Desman proud to rock Pan Am Globalfest stage By Laura Finney
lfinney@yrmg.com
Globalfest might be wrapping up this weekend, but the fun is not over yet. Along with fireworks every night from Friday to Sunday there will also be food, music, entertainment and other live performances from artists such as Shawn Desman, who will be rocking the stage Saturday night. The musician, who grew up in Toronto and lived in Vaughan, said playing for a local audience is a great experience. “Anytime I can come back to Toronto and the GTA and perform for people here it’s just extra special because this is where I come from, this is where it all started for me,” he said. “The energy is great here, it always is.” And, he said, he is honoured to be part of the Pan Am Games. “I’m excited because we are doing well in the medal count, which is awesome. It’s so great for the country,” he said. Obviously the Pan Am Games brings a lot of attention to sports
and athletes, but Desman said it’s great that Markham’s Globalfest has put the spotlight on arts, culture and music. “I think it’s fantastic,” said Desman. “It’s great when the arts are supported, especially in this realm of something so big like the Pan Am Games, it’s amazing.” Each of the nine days of Globalfest has a theme. On Saturday the theme is “I am Canadian!”
New album ‘sexier’ “I’ve travelled to a lot of places across the world and I can honestly say Canada is one of the greatest places on earth,” said Desman. And he added that one of the unique things about the GTA is the multiculturalism. And that is very fitting. Desman has Portuguese roots and got his musical start singing in Portuguese. He was recently inducted into the Portuguese-Canadian Walk of Fame. “I’m proud to be part of the Portuguese community,” he said. “It’s always great to go back to your roots.”
3
DAYS ONLY
He crossed over to the Canadian English market 2002, and this fall he will be releasing a new album. Last week, he released a single from his album Obsession, which is now available on iTunes. Desman said his new album will have a more mature sound. “It’s definitely going to be a sexier record,” he said. He will be bringing some of his new songs to his performance on Saturday, but he will be playing his older music, too. “It’s high energy, tonnes of singing, tonnes of dancing. It’s fun,” he said. Other performances this weekend include Kaha:Wi Dance Theatre who will bring a fusion of indigenous and contemporary dance; Splash and Boots; and Kerry Stratton the director of the Toronto Concert Orchestra who will conduct 50 musicians as they play Music of Hollywood featuring songs from classic movies, including Star Wars, ET and Raiders of the Lost Ark. would consider the idea of going to Markham. “I will definitely be making an application on behalf of the GTA,” he said. “I’ve always believed that a second NHL team in Toronto would flourish and I’ve been preparing since 2010 for this possibility.” On Friday, a spokesperson for Roustan confirmed Roustan has received a bid package from the NHL, and can make no further comment at this time. In 2012, a 20,000-seat arena was first proposed with the support of Mayor Frank Scarpitti by Roustan in a public-private partnership that would see the city securing financing to build the NHL-size arena in Markham’s new downtown centre. However after public objections, councillors voted not to put public money behind the project. Councillor Karen Rea has been pushing for the release of consultants reports on the failed arena project that cost Markham taxpayers more than $700,000. The deadline to make a bid for an expansion team is Aug. 10. It has been reported that the cost to make a bid is $1 million U.S. with a portion refundable, but other publications, including The Hockey News are now saying it costs $10 million, with $2 million non-refundable. Other potential cities for teams include Las Vegas, Quebec City and Seattle. Reports suggest multiple groups are making a bid for a team in Seattle. The Markham bid appears to be the only one that would not be connected to an arena that is either planned or under construction. The NHL has said that there are no guarantees the process will lead to an expansion team. “The fact that we’re going through
Las Vegas, Quebec City and Seattle seen as potential cities. this process doesn’t mean we’re going to expand. All it means is that we’re going to stop just listening to expressions of interest and take a good hard look at what they

would need to pay a special additional multimillion-dollar indemnification fee for setting up so close to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Others have suggested while scheduling could be a challenge, a second team could successfully operate out of the downtown Air Canada Centre, the Leafs’ home
rink, considering the huge fan base for hockey in the GTA. Or the ACC could serve as a temporary home if a second team is secured while a new rink was built. Another potential temporary home would be the former Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, just west of Toronto.

Pan Am centre to be badminton ‘mecca’ BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA
mhayakawa@yrmg.com
If there were any concerns about how the badminton competition and recently constructed Atos Markham Pan Am Centre would be received as the host site for the 2015 Pan American Games, fear not. Taking in the entire six days of competition that concludes with the gold medal matches Thursday, Joe Morissette, Badminton Canada’s executive director, was elated with what transpired on and off the court. “The entire operation has been great,” he said at today’s semifinal matches. “We’ve had fantastic volunteers and crowds. We’ve been well received by the people.” Indeed the people have taken to the Pan Am Centre for badminton (the centre’s pool also hosted water polo) as the competition was well attended during non-medal matches and were nearly sold out for the semifinals and are sold out for Wednesday’s scheduled doubles’ finals and Thursday’s singles’ gold medal finals. That did not surprise Morissette based on the fol-
lowing the sport has in the Greater Toronto Area and in particular, Markham. “In the GTA alone you have some 120 clubs,” he said. “There’s 20,000 active participants who play two to three times a week. When you bring an event of this size there’s people who want to see not just the new venue, but high-level performance badminton as well.” The presence of supportive spectators, Morissette said, provided an additional spark for the Canadian players. Canada will come away with medals in four of five categories, he suggested. Markham resident Michelle Li and Rachel Honderich were bronze medallists in women’s doubles. The defending Pan Am Games gold medallist and Canada’s top women’s singles’ player, Li is also assured of a medal in women’s singles. She was set to face Honderich today in the final. The mixed doubles’ tandem of Toby Ng and Alex Bruce will be playing for the gold medal Thursday. The women’s doubles’ tandem of Bruce and Phyllis Chan are playing a semi-
final match later Thursday and can fare no worse than a bronze. “The big comment from the players was that the crowds definitely gave us a lift. It gave us the home court advantage,” said Morissette. As for the Atos Markham Pan Am Centre facility itself, Morissette said it was everything they could ask for. Citing a test event conducted in October with the staging of the Pan American Championships went fairly well, Morissette said any concerns from that event were addressed prior to the start of the badminton competition Saturday. The one major issue, was the glass panel at the east end of the facility that allowed natural sunlight to get in which caused unwanted glare. That was rectified with the installation of blinds. With that concern corrected, Morissette feels the centre is the “mecca of high level badminton in Canada.” Once the Games conclude, he said Badminton Canada’s objective is to bring provincial, national and international badminton events to Markham.

Stormwater fees spark debate
YOU SEE A BROKEN MAN.
By Laura Finney
lfinney@yrmg.com
WE SEE A BROKEN SYSTEM.
Markham businesses have to wait a few more months before council decides how much they will pay in stormwater fees. During a council meeting last month, city staff brought forward a report on non-residential stormwater fees, but Richard Cunningham, president and CEO of the Markham Board of Trade (MBT) made a deputation and said he was not happy with the preferred option staff had suggested. In the report, staff had presented a number of options including a council-approved fee of $29 per $100,000 of the current value assessment (CVA) of the property. They also looked at a two-tiered structure, where properties valued less than $5 million would play a flat fee of $154, and those over $5 million would pay a flat rate of $4,351. According to the report, the Markham Board of Trade, which represents about 800 local businesses, and Cadillac Fairview endorsed the two-tiered structure. But city staff recommended the councilapproved structure. However, Cunningham requested council defer its decision and bring the issue back, so the city could work with the board to come up with a better option. He said it’s important Markham be seen as a place that works with the business community to find equitable solutions. The stormwater fees will help fund the 30-year flood control program approved in 2013. It is estimated the program will cost $234 million to $288 million, according to the
staff report. To fund this program, the city will be collecting $9.6 million a year — $2 million will come from the Federal Gas Tax program and the rest from stormwater fees, which are split between residential properties and nonresidential properties. Last year, council approved a fee rate of $47 per year for residential properties, which was implemented this year. It also approved a fee of $29 per $100,000 of the CVA for non-residential properties, but in November, deferred the implementation until 2016 so the city could complete a communication engagement process with the business community. Members of staff said they recommended the council approved option because the two-tiered option was not fair. “If a property has a CVA of just under $5 million they are paying $154. If they are just over $5 million, even if it’s just a dollar over, they are paying 28 times that amount,” said Mark Visser, senior manager, Financial Strategy and Investments. “That’s what we couldn’t get past.” Cunningham asked how it was fair to have a flat fee for residents, noting someone who owns a $700,000 property pays the same amount as someone who owns a $3 million property. “I think if the city is going to take an approach it should be a consistent one. I’m not asking you to do that and put in a flat fee. But I think as you answer these questions, you need to keep that in back of your mind, because it sends a clear message to businesses.”

Hilton Wilson left ‘huge mark’ on Kleinburg BY AdAm mArtin-roBBins
amartinrobbins@yrmg.com
H
ilton Wilson was well known as a highly regarded educator who was passionate about his Kleinburg community, sports and gardening. Those who knew him best will also tell you that he marched to the beat of his own drummer. “I would do things a certain way, but Hilton would never, ever do it that way. He’d have a way of his own,” his wife, Gail Wilson, said. Born in 1941, Hilton Wilson grew up Goderich, the second youngest of six children. His mother worked as a teacher, while his father was a general labourer. “They didn’t have a lot of money, so he grew up doing things for himself,” Gail said. After high school, Wilson headed to teachers’ college in Hamilton, eventually landing a job teaching elementary school in Etobicoke. Wilson spent his summer vacations working toward a bachelor’s degree, with a double major in Math and English, at the University of Western Ontario in London. That’s where, in 1964, he met Gail, also working toward a degree. The couple married in 1965 and he took the next year off from teaching to finish his degree. A passionate educator, Wilson eventually earned a masters in education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, at University of Toronto. He also helped write a reading

series for young children and dedicated a lot of time to research on childhood development, Gail said. In 1969, the couple moved to Kleinburg, where they started a family. Wilson was the proud father of two boys, Jeff and Brent. It was through coaching his sons’ T-ball teams that Wilson first became involved in the community. From there, he joined the legion of volunteers who help out with the annual Binder Twine Festival, starting out in the booth selling the infamous Kleinburgers, french fries and onion rings. He quickly became a key member of the organizing committee, on which he served for 20 years including two as chairperson. “He played a huge role on the Friday night setting up. During the day, he was the go-to person on the Saturday (and) on Sunday cleanup, he was always there,” said longtime friend Bob Klein. “He was just the go-to guy.” Wilson was also a founding member of the Kleinburg Old Boys, a local volunteer group that established and runs a small museum at Klein House dedicated to preserving the village’s history. “He just liked to know what was going on (in the community) and he didn’t like when things weren’t handled properly so he liked to be in there, getting it done,” Gail said. “He was a get-itdone person.” Though he had no formal computer training, many people knew Wilson as the man to call if your machine was acting up.
Wearing a Kleinburg Binder Twine Festival button, Hilton Wilson could always be found setting up the community festival, cleaning up or generally getting things done. Whether it was gardening, sports, a community event or his family, he was a ‘go-to’ and ‘get it done’ guy.
Hilton Wilson passed away in March at age 73 after making a ‘huge mark’ on Kleinburg. “If anyone had a computer problem and they’d call Hilton and he’d go and, usually, could solve it,” Gail said. “He loved solving problems.” He was never one who sought the limelight. “His friend Ron (Pearson) said recently that Hilton did so many things for Binder Twine that they didn’t realize because he just did those things,” Gail recalled. “He never really wanted to stand out. He just quietly did things.” Along with his passion for Kleinburg, Wilson loved sports – especially baseball, basketball and golf. He had Blue Jays season tickets for many years. And after retiring in 1997 as principal at Bloorlea Middle School, Wilson took up his golf clubs with gusto.
Celebrate a lifeed! v i l l l e w “Adored by children, universally
respected and an inspiration to her peers, Mrs. McCluskey was a tireless volunteer, quick to deflect the praise heaped on her.”
He also took charge of organizing regular golf games for the Kleinburg Old Boys, Klein said. Wilson was fond of gardening, too, tending his massive vegetable garden. His tomato and wave petunia plants were sold at the Kleinburg Old Boys annual fundraising plant sale in May. Wilson was also a devoted grandfather to his four granddaughters – Madison, Avery, Sofie and Ellie. Last summer, Wilson was diagnosed with leukemia, but it went
