York Region has the “gotta catch’em all” fever. It has been the scene on street corners, public trails and parks in Markham and across the region: gaggles of people congregated in one area staring at their cellphones. Pokémon GO, a free app that allows players to search the cartoon creatures in real-world locations, capture them in Poké Balls and train them for battle, launched in Canada Sunday. Nintendo seems to have lucked onto the perfect storm: a generation glued to digital devices, tuned in to nostalgia and looking for ways to connect in this great summer weather. Not everyone’s laughing, though. Mary Lynn Mulroney has seen many around her neighbourhood at Major Mackenzie and Bathurst — her 29-year-old son even caught one on their chimney — but some weren’t

cruiser to cool down. Paramedics treated the baby at the scene. When the parents returned to the vehicle, they were charged with leaving a child unattended under the Child and Family Services Act. They will appear in provincial offences court at 456 Davis Dr. in Newmarket on Aug. 22.
Police are withholding their names to protect the child’s identity. The Children’s Aid Society has been notified, Bachoo said. Any child younger than 10 who is left unattended, for any length of time, may be considered at risk, and the parents or guardians could be charged.

Four siblings reflect on 16 years as campers and staff at Markham’s Camp Robin Hood on a smoldering Wednesday. This quadruplet — Rebecca, Zachary, Brianna and Kaitlyn Unger — have attended the day camp on Reesor Road near Major Mackenzie Drive since they were three years old. Rebecca has so enjoyed her camp experience that she chose teaching as a career, in part so she can head back to the camp each summer. But, when she was younger, she remembers feeling the typical camper jitters. She used to be afraid of getting into a canoe. “I was scared of tipping. I thought there were alligators in the pond,” she said. (There aren’t). Her brother Zachary used to be scared of swimming. Sister Brianna recalls how as a very young camper, Zachary would just sit on his towel and cry as swim staff devised ways to get him in the water (it worked – he loves swimming now). For Kaitlyn, it was fears of the dark. “I wanted to develop photos, but didn’t want to go into the photography darkroom,” she said.

days when they were young campers and their mother would drive around the camp in a golf cart to round them up at the end of the day. She made a special whistling sound to alert them: “Where are you? Come find me”. (Interesting fact: Zachary and Rebecca can whistle, but the other two siblings cannot). The four siblings grew up in Ajax, where their parents remain.
Brianna doesn’t remember having fears or struggles as a camper. She just remembers loving camp. Today, the 19-year-old siblings work there, alongside their mother, Bev Unger, who is a registered nurse and the camp’s health coordinator. Kaitlyn is lead specialist for land sports and gymnastics, Rebecca and Brianna are both unit heads and Zachary is a member of the camp’s maintenance crew. The four teens remember the
During the school year, they now live in different cities. Rebecca is in Kingston at Queen’s University, Zachary is in Ajax attending Durham College, Brianna studies in Hamilton at McMaster University and Kaitlyn is in Waterloo at Waterloo University. But, when the weather turns mild, they reunite in the wild. “We all enjoy it and have a strong desire to come back,” Rebecca said, “in part because of the sense of com-

Now 17, Lesley is a counsellor and Jessica works on swim staff. Each Unger sibling has favourite memories of growing up at the camp. For Kaitlyn, it was canoeing in a mock Survivor-type game. Brianna loved camper overnights, especially the one when campers had to pitch tents as part of a pretend Amazing Race game. She remembers the awesome feeling when her team won. Rebecca loved karate and has a good memory of the time the karate area of camp hosted an obstacle course. As for Zachary, he learned a lot about carpentry at camp, a subject that is a current passion and possible future career path for him. He calls Robin Hood his “home away from home,” a sentiment his sisters share. “There’s no place I feel more like myself than here,” Rebecca said. While at school there may have been cliques or other kinds of social pressure, but here she just always felt accepted, she said. “There’s no judgment,” Rebecca said. “Everyone is made to feel accepted. munity at the camp.” The regional camp is no stranger to multiples, who come from all over the camp’s pick-up area, including York Region.
TRIPLETS AND TWINS Part way through the summer, a set of triplet campers will be in Rebecca’s unit. One family has two sets of twins — the younger twins are also in Rebecca’s unit. The directors of Camp Robin Hood also co-own an overnight camp called Camp Walden, where three staff members each have a twin. Patti Stulberg, Robin Hood’s registration director and bookkeeper, has twin daughters – Lesley and Jessica – who are younger than the Unger teens. The Stulberg sisters, who are Richmond Hill residents, used to play alongside the Unger children before and after camp and Kaitlyn, top left, and Brianna Unger with siblings Rebecca, front, and Zachary as Camp Robin Hood campers back in 2004. today, they still remain close.

Home care gets $13M shot in arm In the days before her father, Peter Meirik, died of cancer in 2011, Markham’s Joanne Cadorin turned to the Central Community Care Access Centre for medical equipment and home care support to help him live out his final time at home. After her elderly mother, Eva Meirik, suffered a bad fall after moving in with Cadorin’s family a year ago, the CCAC was there again. They now provide an hour of care in the mornings for her 86-year-old mother, allowing Cadorin to get ready for work for her Scarborough office job before a private caregiver arrives to take over care for the rest of the day. “I’ve never asked for more. This is just really working. When my mom does have a setback, they do offer a physiotherapist to come,” she said. “And an occupational therapist has done a complete check around the house and told us what equipment we should have in the house. I have a walk-in bathtub for my mom, things like that to wash her and keep her safe. They have been very helpful and I have numbers to call if I need help.” Cadorin, who was at a provincial home care funding announcement in Markham Wednesday morning, said the home care her mother receives is allowing her mom to live with her family where she wants to be. “I could not do it without the support, I really could not. It’s meant she has been able to be in her own environment, happy — not lonely. She eats the food she normally eats, she’s with the people she wants to be with.
.com
When people want to visit, they just come visit us in our own home,” she said. “She has her own things around her because we brought some of her things with her. So, her furniture is around her. This is her home. So, I get home from work and it’s sit down with her and ‘How’s work?’ I don’t have to go out and visit every night for an hour every night. Mom is with us. That actually makes it even easier. It’s an honour and when this kind of service makes it even easier, that really helps. I’m really happy to have my mom at home, I really am. She has a great attitude. She’s very happy to be there and that makes all the difference in the world.” Standing outside the Markham Senior Activity Centre, northwest of Hwy. 7 and Markham Road, Oak Ridges-Markham MPP Helena Jaczek announced the province is investing an additional $13.7 million in the Central CCAC and Local Health Integration Network, which oversees and coordinates health care services in York Region, northern Toronto and parts of Simcoe County. The funding will help increase access to home care for high-needs residents, Jaczek said, adding 20 per cent of the money is earmarked for respite services for caregivers. “As I think we all know, home care is vital for my constituents and people in Ontario to support people in their own homes for as long as is feasible,” she said. “Why do we do this? Obviously, people like to remain in their own homes for as long as they possibly can.” Supporting people in their own homes is also less expensive than caring for them in hospitals or longterm care, Jaczek said.

Too stringent cannabis rules bad idea
t was always clear that many hurdles will have to be jumped before legal marijuana can become a reality in Canada. Pot advocates won’t be too pleased with the latest one. Ottawa, which recently struck a marijuana task force led by former deputy prime minister Anne McLellan, is sending strong signals legalized pot will be so strictly controlled that homegrown weed (even for medical purposes) may remain an illegal substance. For advocates, this will come as surprising and unwelcome news. Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott says the government wants to treat pot like tobacco. She may or may not be aware, however, that it is actually legal to grow your own personal-use tobacco in small amounts in Ontario. Liberal MPP Bill Blair, justifying a heavy-handed approach, told the Toronto Star last week: “Unlike (growing) tomatoes, (marijuana) is a substance that poses … significant … social and health harms and risks to Canadians … the science is overwhelmingly clear that marijuana is not a benign substance.” On that basis, it doesn’t exactly sound like something that

should be legal, does it? Except that doctors are prescribing it for glaucoma, anxiety, pain relief, muscle spasms caused by MS, nausea, arthritis discomfort and more. And we all know recreational use is widespread. A 2015 survey showed 20 per cent of Canadians indulge and another 10 per cent will light up once it appears in stores. A Conservative attempt to prevent medical users from growing their own pot has already been tossed out by the courts. It stands to reason then that preventing non-medical users of a legal substance from growing their own plants could amount to discrimination. Perhaps that’s the wrench in the gears. As we have seen with the emergence of medical pot dispensaries, declaring you are making it legal amounts to letting the horse out of the barn. You will have an industry, you will have people growing their own, for medical uses or not. The notion you can police every user who may have a few plants in a pot at home is absurd. The Liberals seem intent on following through on this promise. It just seems like they forget why they made it in the first place.
Gender parity on council?
R
emember the words of newlyminted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiling his new cabinet made up of an equal number of male and female MPs, and more diverse than ever seen before? To media questions as to why he made good on his promise to have equal representation of women on his inner circle, he simply replied, “Because it’s 2015”. Ever since, opponents and supporters have watched for signals that the PM and his new Liberal government are putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to the role of women in government. This week another move to support gender parity — the Liberals restored funding options to women’s organizations which had been stripped of support during the Stephen Harper years. Specifically, the current government says advocacy activities by women’s groups across the country do not disqualify them for government funding. Making the announcement was MP Patty Hadju, Minister of Status of Women, noting: “I’m proud of the fact that we are restoring support for advocacy within the scope of projects funded through Status of Women Canada. Advocacy is what will ensure that our decisions are informed and properly address the
Marney Beck needs of Canadians. This action ... reflects our renewed focus on gender equality as a goal shared by all Canadians.” In the Harper years, cuts to funding of the Status of Women organization saw 12 of 16 regional offices closed and funding criteria was redrafted. This meant that dozens of women’s service providers — including rape crisis centres — that participated in advocacy or lobbying for law reform, became ineligible for funding or saw budgets slashed. Why does this matter? As compared to other countries, Canada has been falling behind the gender equity curve. Poverty rates have been rising for elderly single women and singleparent families headed by women. The pay gap between women and men has widened in this country and a 2015 study noted that Canada ranked 52nd in terms of female representation in Parliament. So while that has changed significantly for the better in Ottawa, what about
in your own municipality? Look at your regional and local elected politicians and there’s certainly no gender parity there. Sitting at the Region of York — making key decisions on roads, sewers, waste and recycling pickup, transit and overall tax rates — are 21 elected representatives. Only four of them are women. Whitchurch-Stouffville has no women politicians — all seven are men. Richmond Hill and Aurora have two of nine politicians who are women, Vaughan and Newmarket have three of nine, Markham four of 12, and the rural municipalities of King, East Gwillimbury and Georgina have three, two and two women on council respectively, with the latter two municipalities boasting female mayors. Given that half the population of Canada is female, isn’t it about time that half of every level of government reflects that simple fact? There’s just over two years before we all go back to the polls to elect municipal representatives. Let’s hope voters in 2018 have opportunities to choose qualified, talented women candidates. With strong federal signals that women are eminently qualified to lead us, let’s hope that galvanizes and encourages female candidates in all our towns and cities to consider a role in politics.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Don’t tailor laws Re: Senior crime? Do extra time, column by Bernie O’Neill, June 30. I rarely agree with O’Neill’s opinions. There may be good reasons for special laws imposing harsher penalties on criminals who target particularly vulnerable people. This, at least, is the explana-
tion for “child” pornography laws and “hate crimes”. Being neither a child nor a member of a vulnerable demographic group, I’ll pass on those matters. As a septuagenarian, I resent being classed as a presumed incompetent. To me, fraud is fraud, theft is theft and murder is murder. Perpetrators should face justice based
on the nature of the crime, not the victim. Tailoring laws to suit perceptions of age, gender, ethnicity, religion or any other trait caters to self-righteousness, but it also presents tremendous opportunities for abuse — not just against the alleged perpetrators, but ultimately against the victims as well.

Thornhill trench collapse prompts dramatic rescue Worker buried up to waist, crews feared ‘very dangerous’ trench collapse By SIMONE JOSEPH
sjoseph@yrmg.com
A man was rescued from a collapsed trench in the John Street and Bayview Avenue area of Thornhill Monday morning. Emergency crews from Markham and Richmond Hill extricated the trapped man, who was buried to his waist, according to the Richmond Hill Fire Department. He was in stable condition with a broken leg or possible fractures, according to Shane Caskanette, Richmond Hill’s deputy fire chief. There was a partial trench collapse and the man was doing work in a sewer or catch basin, said Caskanette. He was stuck about 20 feet down. The rescue was a joint effort between Richmond Hill and Markham fire departments, as well as EMS (emergency medical services) and York Regional Police. Representatives from the Min-
istry of Labour also came to the scene. It was more complicated than an ordinary rescue, so more emergency workers and crews had to be called in, according to Caskanette. The man was put on ropes and pulled to the surface, Caskanette said. The fact that the trench had partially collapsed made the situation particularly dire, he said. “It was a very dangerous position. We didn’t want to keep him or the crews down there longer than we had to for fear of (trench) collapse,” he said. He estimated the rescue lasted at least an hour. Markham Fire was called first, then Richmond Hill received a call at 11:44 a.m. to a construction area east of Bayview Avenue on John Street. The rescue was very much a co-operation between the two fire departments, EMS and YRP. “It was a concerted effort,” he said.
Richmond Hill and Markham fire crews were able to extricate a man from a collapsed trench on Monday morning at a construction site at Bayview and John in Thornhill.

‘Necessary evil’trucks controversy to council By amanda persico
By the numbers:
apersico@yrmg.com
For those living in Markham’s east end, it’s a classic chicken-or-egg scenario. What came first, the residents or the road, the city or the region. Residents living along Ninth Line argue they came first in the battle of banning trucks along Nine Line. Many of the homes in the area were built in the 1960s when Ninth Line was a residential road. “These homes were built prior to regional government,” said Dan McGarry, an executive member of the Sherwood-Amberglen ratepayers association. “This is an old, long established community.” As such, it was not designed to accommodate large volumes of trucks, he added. But the region’s transportation master plan, which was recently completed, stresses the notion ‘all roads are for all modes’. Rea. “How can a regional councillor from East Gwillimbury or Aurora vote on what happens to one of the roads in my ward. They’ve probably never been there,” she said in an interview. This is one case where the role of the region and the municipality need to be revisited, she added. Not only has the region lifted the truck ban on Ninth Line, but also plans to remove ‘Truck Route’ signs from Donald Cousens Parkway, which is also cause for concern. “The parkway was built to take the traffic and the trucks. It’s a bypass,” Rea said. “The parkway was built first, the homes came in second.” The plan, which is 10 to 15 years down the road, is to have Hwy. 48 continue on to the Donald Cousens Parkway. Drivers wanting to go to Main Street Markham or Ninth Line will have to exit and turn off Hwy. 48.

New markers made from aluminum composite By amanda persico
apersico@yrmg.com
There’s more to a sign than a name. Over the next three years, Markham plans to spend more than $570,000 to update its current stock of 435 parks with new, standard park signs in terms of type, size and design. The new signs, made from aluminum composite, will feature the park name, civic address, city logo along with three Bur Oak leaves on green background – a departure from the older brown wood signs with yellow letters. The new signs will be erected and visible at each park entrance, including parks with multiple street entrances. At the top of the priority list are those parks without signs, major attraction parks and parks with sports fields associated with them. Having a citywide standard helps make parks more recognizable for residents and for emergency services, the city’s community and fire services commissioner Brenda Librecz said. “We want to make it easy to identify,” she said. This also makes it easier for local and out-of-town sports organizations to find soccer fields or baseball diamonds that are part of a larger park. All of the city’s parks have been mapped and are coded with the city’s fire and emergence services departments, Librecz said. Currently, there are more than 240 parks without signs and 190 with older signs that will have to be replaced. The new signs will be made of aluminum composite, with durability, strength and UV resistance in

mind. The signs, costing between $1,200 and $1,400 depending on the size, were also graffiti tested – scratched, burned and tagged – to see how easy graffiti removal will be. Signs at new parks that currently don’t have signs will be partially funded through development charges. Older parks with signs will be funded through the city’s life cycle reserve funds. The new citywide park signs project dates back to 2013 with a staff direction from council. Part of the delay can be attributed to the number of approvals required, including fire and emergency services, parks and recreation and Heritage Markham, along with making any adjustments thereafter, the city’s parks and open space manager Linda Irvine said. Also, there were more than 90 parks that did not have an official The signs, costing between $1,200 and $1,400 dependname and each sign has to be cus- ing on size, were graffiti tested – scratched, burned and tom printed with the name and tagged – to see how easy graffiti removal will be. address, she added. East meets West Students from Shanghai performed routines that they learned at KICKS Dance School during a performance at Flato Markham Theatre. Nearly 40 students, ages 10-12, traveled to Canada to study dance at KICKS and learn western style dances. Their performance at Flato featured traditional Chinese dances and the new dances they learned, plus dances by local students from Markham.

Ontario men’s amateur champ learned from last year BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA
mhayakawa@yrmg.com
STAFF PHOTO/MIKE BARRETT
Unionville’s Max Sear finished first with a score of 11-under at the 2016 Investror’s Group Ontario Men’s Amateur Golf championship, Friday at Thornhill Golf & Country Club.
Max Sear came close to capturing the Golf Ontario Investors Group Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship last year, finishing in a tie for third. But when this year’s competition took place this week at the Thornhill Golf and Country Club, the 19-year-old Unionville resident took things two steps further - all the way to the top. Entering Friday’s final round, Sear sat alone in top spot at 11-under with a three-shot lead. After recording birdies on the third and fourth holes, Sear settled for a pair of bogeys on the fifth and ninth holes and was at even par entering the turn. Meanwhile, Keaton Jones of Kitchener, who entered the day in second, was one-over at the turn giving Sear a four-shot lead with nine to play. Sear gained some breathing room when he birdied the 11th and Jones bogeyed the 13th to take a sixstroke lead with five holes to play. That turned out to be more than enough as Sear ended the round at even par 71 to finish the tournament at 11-under 273 (69-68-65-71). An elated Sear felt the disap-
pointment in coming close to winning the title last year served as a big incentive going into this year’s event. A member of the York Downs Golf and Country Club, Sear plays at the University of West Virginia on a golf scholarship. Sear noted that after having a lead last year before losing it, he was not about to let that advantage slip away this time around which it did after Thursday when he shot a sizzling six-under 65 to take the lead.
“This year I knew I had to keep my foot on the gas pedal, which I did. It was frustrating last year, but I learned a lot and I guess it paid off this year.” “It felt really good to come out on top this year,” he said in a Golf Ontario press release. “I think the big difference was my third round. Last year I had the lead after the second round, but shot four-over in the third round. This year I knew I had to keep my foot on the gas pedal,
which I did. It was frustrating last year, but I learned a lot and I guess it paid off this year.” In citing what he felt the turning point was, Sear felt it began right after the first round in which saw him among the contenders. From there, he continued to build a head of steam. “I felt like my game was in a good spot and had a lot of momentum coming off the first round. I think the real turning point for me was the final four holes during the second round. I went five-under on those four holes and that just sparked me. I came into the third round with a lot of confidence and went low. Everything seemed to work out for me after that.” Picking up the silver medal was Jones, who ended the day with a one-over 72 and finished the tournament seven-under 277 (70-6768-72). Cayuga’s Charles Corner finished third after carding a four-under 280 (69-72-71-68). Sear, Jones and Corner will represent Ontario in the team competition at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, Aug. 8 to 11, at The Royal Ottawa Golf Club and Eagle Creek Golf Club in OttawaGatineau.

Raonic’s Thornhill tennis coach excited about superstars of future By DAVID LI
While Milos Raonic’s success on the tennis courts is an inspiration to young aspiring players, it’s something that’s also motivating his childhood coach and mentor. Having coached the recent Wimbledon finalist from age 8 to 17, Thornhill resident Casey Curtis acknowledges it gives him great satisfaction to be recognized as the man who built Raonic’s devastating serve. “We definitely worked many, many hours on his first serve when Milos was young. It’s an honour to be recognized for that and obviously, it’s great to see his success on the tennis courts now,” said Curtis, who plans to release a detailed instructional video on the mechanics of Raonic’s serve later this summer. While the blistering serve remains Raonic’s biggest weapon, Curtis acknowledges his former student is

quickly developing a nice all-around game. The high performance tennis coach credits Raonic’s newest addition to his coaching staff and former world No. 1, John McEnroe, for his positive influence. “One of the most important parts of the game is being able to get to the net and being comfortable with making tough volleys. John was great
at that during his career and that’s something I’m sure he’s sharing with Milos,” Curtis said of McEnroe, who has joined Raonic’s coaching staff. “I know they both really respect each other, so I definitely think it’s a good thing Milos is working with John.” Seeing the success of his former student motivates the high performace coach to develop more future stars on the tennis courts. “I feel that I have that ability and I want to continue to use that ability,” Curtis said. According to Heather Schrader, Curtis’ talents as a mentor and coach are second to none. “My son Joseph has not had a coach the calibre of Casey giving him encouragement and insight. Seeing the success of Milos and knowing how much Casey had to do with his success is really motivating for Joseph,” said the North Carolina

mother, whose 18-year-old son relocated to Thornhill this summer to train with Curtis. “It’s clear in the short time he’s worked with Casey, Joseph has already made a lot of improvement; and it’s also clear that Casey is great at what he does,” she added. Someone else eager to endorse Curtis is the recent Wimbledon finalist himself. “He was very tough and demanding, in a good way,” Raonic told The Thornhill Liberal in a previous interview of his childhood coach. “I came to the club as a beginner. He asked me to work hard ... pushed me to new limits and helped me reach the next level. “He has dedicated his life to tennis and he invests himself and his time to help tennis players to develop their game. He cares and he will do anything to help you improve and ... reach your potential.” In assessing his current group of

students, Curtis — who coaches out of the Richmond Hill Tennis Club — is optimistic he may have other tennis superstars in the mix. “I’ve got a lot of good young athletes I’m working with now that I’m very excited about,” said the York University grad, who started his coaching career in the late 1970s. “A lot of the students are obviously inspired by what Milos has accomplished. My goal now is to train more players who are going to be able to play professionally.” Curtis and his tennis hopefuls, are looking forward to seeing Raonic at the upcoming Rogers Cup. “For sure I will be there with the kids at some point. It’ll be great for them to see Milos and the other pros compete and see how they handle themselves — because playing at the highest level is what these kids aspire to do.” - David Li is a freelance writer

Forty years residents of the Markham, Unionville area, and long time members of the York Downs Golf Club, the couple raised the children, son Kelly and daughter Samantha happily there. The couple owned and operated Hydra Lift Inc. for over thirty years in the Markham area. Over the years, the couple made many dear friends there and miss them all very much. Now retired to the West Coast in the South Surrey, White Rock area to be near family. Their greatest joy these days are their grandchildren Marin and Ben. The couple keep busy traveling, golfing, babysitting and watching the sunset over the Pacific, with the hope of many more Anniversaries to celebrate together.

Sandgate is a feminist organization and works from an anti-oppressive framework. As such, we support and empower women who experience various barriers to achieving safety in their lives. Board meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month from 6:00pm-8:30pm and rotate between our offices in Jackson’s Point, Richmond Hill and Keswick. We are seeking Volunteer Board Members who are committed to supporting quality service in a feminist, woman-centred organization. Scotty was born in Airdrie Scotland on April 9, 1930 to father, Alexander Kerr Welsh. Scotty died on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at Markham Stouffville Hospital with his wife Mary Anne and son Jamie at his side. Scotty immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1938 and lived in Schumacher until moving to Toronto. Scotty was proud of his Scottish heritage but more proud to be a Canadian citizen, as he expressed frequently. He loved to listen to, whistle and sing along to all types of music. Scottish, Old Country, Opera. He played professional soccer in Toronto in his youth. He always remained a loyal Manchester United fan. His great love was hockey, he played in his youth #11. During his life time he mentored and coached many young men in hockey, he encouraged their hockey and life skills and left lifelong impressions on them to this day. He owned Hockey Schools in Markham and Bracebridge and elsewhere. He coached the Aurora Tigers and Etobicoke Indians Junior “B” hockey teams and Leaside Iron Tomahawks. He was involved in Markham Minor Hockey Association as an executive member for years and coached as well. He was co-owner of Markham Travelways Junior ‘’B” team. He was tirelessly involved with his sons many sporting activities. He was generous, compassionate, a hard worker, never took credit for anything he accomplished and never seemed to age. People would see him after years of no contact with him and would recognize him immediately by his voice or his look, and their usual comment was,”you’ve never changed a bit.” He never touched alcohol, was designated driver for his friends before it was popular. His drink of choice was always Coca Cola. He smoked cigars and pipes but eventually gave up smoking but continued to always have a can of Coke in his hand. Bob was the loving and much loved husband of Mary Anne (nee Moody) for 52 years. Proud and loving father of Alex, Scott (Carly), Jamie, Derek (Adele). Much loved and loving grandpa of Madelyn, Colin, Makenna, Maria and Nicole. Older Brother to Margaret, Sandy and Marie. Scotty has been cremated. No service was held per his wishes. The family would like everyone who knew him to raise a can of Coke to celebrate a life well lived and a man well loved. Here’s to Scotty!!! Memorial Condolences may be made at www.forrestandtaylor.com

The Markham Aquatic Club brought out the brooms when they took to the waters at the Etobicoke Olympium Pool recently. Having swam their way to championships during the 201516 campaign in the Ontario Short Course Winter Provincial Championships, Ontario Winter Festival Championship, Ontario Long Course Spring Championship, and Ontario Summer Festival Championship earlier this season, the club concluded their campaign by claiming the Ontario Long Course Summer Championship crown. Ending their season on a positive note, Rob Novak, club head
coach, was quick to note it’s not every day a club can sweep all of their meet titles in one season. “It’s extremely rare, and possibly unprecedented. It’s definitely an accomplishment,” he said of the effort given by his swimmers and coaching staff. “Before the meet started, our swimmers were well aware of what needed to be done to have a successful team meet: swim with a positive energy and create an exciting environment at home during preliminaries,” he said. “Our swimmers did a great job of racing hard in the morning, including morning relay swims, resting properly in the afternoon, and rode momentum into Etobicoke each and every night.”
Members who swam their way to gold medal performances included: Canadian 2016 Olympic team member Javier Acevedo (Male 18 and Over) – 50-metre and 100m freestyle, 100m and 200m backstroke and 200 individual medley; Aaron Guo (Male 16-17) - 200m butterfly; Owen Huang (Male 15) - 100m and 200m breaststroke, 200m and 400m individual medley; Ethan Jong (Male 14) - 200m breaststroke; Philip Kay (Male 16-17) 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley; Christian Ng (Male 18 and over) - 200m butterfly; Nicholas Ng (Male 14) - 400m and 1,500m freestyle; Ryan Telford (Male 16-17) - 100m and 200m breaststroke and 400m individual medley; Connor Walker (Male 16-17) - 400m and 1,500m freestyle; Janelle Gursoy (Female 14) - 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley; Danika Huizinga (Female 16-17) -
100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke; Victoria Kwan (Female 14) - 200m butterfly, 200m and 400m individual medley; Kayla Sanchez (Female 15) - 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle, 100m and 200m backstroke and 100m butterfly; Brooke Switzer (Female 14) - 1,500m freestyle and 400m individual medley. At the same time, several club members broke individual long course club records over the course of the meet. Those included: Devon Burnett (Girls 11-12) 400m individual medley – 5:26.63 and Sanchez (Girls 15-17) 50m freestyle – 26.45; 100m Freestyle – 57.40 (Girls 15-17 and OPEN) 200m freestyle – 2:02.04; 50m Backstroke – 29.66; 100m Backstroke – 1:01.26 and 100m Breaststroke – 1:13.07. Several relay records were also set over
