“This is what makes a community,” McAlpine said. “When people come together, stuff like this happens.”

Food, however, remains the No. 1 attraction, with more than a dozen different food trucks and restaurants serving treats on the street.

The changing food offerings are a reflection of the changing community, McAlpine said.

“Twenty or 30 years ago, you might have seen burgers and hotdogs,” he said. “Now, there is every kind of ethnic food. In 1969, Unionville was pretty white bread.

Markham has evolved and the festival has evolved — it’s only natural.”

There will be market vendors and live music lining the street on both days.

The Fred Varley Art Gallery will also offer free admission for patrons and children throughout the festival.

The Heritage Train is back offering trips from the Old Unionville train station to Markham Main Street train station.

New this year is the Be Fit Festival on Sunday, where patrons can try any assortment of fitness activities, such as soccer, archery, zumba, yoga, hockey, skateboarding and tai chi.

The route to summer always starts with the annual Unionville Festival.

This year, the festival — dating back to 1969 — celebrates 47 years of community.

In the late 1960s, there were plans to widen Kennedy Road, which meant bulldozing the historic village of Unionville and the main street, festival chairperson Reid McAlpine said.

The festival started as a protest against that plan, McAlpine said, then it morphed into a celebration about the larger Unionville community.

“Unionville is still on the map,” he said. “Kennedy Road now goes around Main Street. Now, this is a vibrant celebration for a community that almost wasn’t.”

And this year’s festival, June 4 and 5, is sure to impress.

The festival is jam packed with events for the whole family, with more than 120 vendors and more than a dozen different activities

Markham’s future hinges on Generation Next – the innovative generation, according to Markham’s mayor.

Who makes up Generation Next was the focus of this year’s Mayor’s Luncheon hosted by the Markham Board of Trade.

Mayor Frank Scarpitti talked about how Markham is not only the high-tech capital of Canada, but is also becoming the home for Generation Next-ers, as more and more leading-edge companies are putting down roots in Markham.

“Generation Next is bringing tomorrow’s solutions today,” Scarpitti said in front of a full house of more than 500 guests at the Markham Hilton Suites.

“Generation Next is making our future look very very bright.”

At the end of the presentation, the lights went out and a robot appeared on stage.

“The future is ours to create,” Scarpitti said via iPad held by the robot.

Luncheon attendees included business leaders and executives, municipal officials, dignitaries, business school students and academic professionals.

Markham is home to several headquarters, including yoga apparel company Ranka; MOBIS, a parts and logistics distribution facility for Hyundai and Kia; and smart transportation digital management firm Green Owl Mobile. Under Armour is also expected to move into Markham Centre.

But technology is where Markham will make its mark.

“With family, you might see three or four generations in a century. But with technology, we move closer to the speed of light,” the mayor said.

That’s the case with Huawei Canada, headquartered in Markham, which has invested in millions in 5G technology and network research.

those suffering from psoriasis opened earlier this year; Hatch Cold Brew, one of North America’s only cold brewing coffee facilities; remote patient care and imaging technologies firm, RAD365, is building a research and development hub in Markham; CieNET Technologies is set to build the Canadian Centre of Excellence for automotive technologies; and the Ford 2017 GT supercar will feature automotive engineering and motorsport form Multimatic parts.

The new Canadian Centre of Excellence, to be located on McNabb Street, will research new technologies found inside the car, such as syncing a smartphone calendar with the car’s GPS system.

“Next time, I’m going to drive here,” said CieNET vice-president Michael Yuan. “Then the car will park itself. When we’re done, I’ll call the car to pick me up. The car will already have the way home mapped out. And then it will remind me to pick up milk and the dry cleaning.”

“I already love this car,” joked Scarpitti.

The mayor noted how much of what Markham is today started with dreams and plans that many may have had a hard time grasping.

“It wasn’t that long ago, there weren’t any buildings there,” Scarpitti said of the new Downtown Markham area along Enterprise Drive.

“It was not too long ago people said not to build condo buildings in Markham because that is too far north.”

Downtown Markham is slated to be the future home to more than 40,000 residents, accompanied by 40,000 jobs.

Aviva Insurance is set to open in the next year with some 1,500 jobs and York University’s Markham Campus is set to open for the 2020/2021 school year.

Part of the mayor’s presentation was a sitdown with notable business leaders from the community, including Chris Bratty of Remington, Cailey Stollery, president of Angus Gluen Golf Club and Michael Yuan of CieNET. Remington is also behind the Pride of Canada carousel, set to open this summer.

The solar-powered carousel, housed in a glass pavilion, features characters from each province.

“We want to create a sense of place,” Bratty said. “The carousel will be part of Markham’s culture. A green field was turned into a city centre. Markham is the apple of every municipality’s eye.”

York police mum on extradition of victim’s wife

Avninder Singh feels like a broken woman, sitting in her Markham home gripping a wood-framed photograph of her murdered brother.

Losing Jaskaran Singh, who was repeatedly stabbed in his homeland of India by unknown assailants in March, was awful enough, but what she is facing now has left her and her family bewildered.

Just more than a week ago, Avninder received a media release from Indian investigators advising her that Pawandeep Kaur, Jaskaran’s wife of more than a decade, is wanted by police for conspiring to kill him.

‘You can’t understand the shock we are going through right now.

The first shock came in March when my brother was killed and then, months later, we discover this second shock’ None of the allegations against Kaur has been proven in court.

Police in India said they are seeking extradition of Kaur back to India, however, although Avninder has requested York Regional Police step in to arrest Kaur, the service refused to say whether or not it was looking into the allegations.

“York Regional Police does not confirm whether or not we are investigating a matter,” Const. Andy Pattenden said.

Avninder said her “soft and quiet” brother met Kaur at the Superstore in Markham before getting married in 2001, her parents purchasing them a home on Boxhill Drive, in Markham, soon after.

However, the relationship quickly became rocky, Avninder said, explaining how Pawandeep tried to create distance between her new family and the rest of his family.

“She would even get mad at us when we called him on his birthday,” she said.

dian job as a truck driver and returned to India, where he worked as a part-time property dealer, also assisting in the construction of a small plaza.

Kaur remained in Markham with their two children, a boy and a girl, Avninder said.

It was on March 16 when Indian police informed her, that Jaskaran, 38, was supposed to meet a man about the rental of some units. However, when he didn’t show up, another two men did, riding in Jaskaran’s car to two separate properties.

On their way to the second property, in Sawara, in the state of Punjab, one of the men pulled out a knife and stabbed Jaskaran multiple times in the chest, killing him.

They then stole his vehicle and his phone, police told Avninder.

After the murder, Kaur and Jaskaran’s family all went to India to attend his funeral, but Avninder said Kaur didn’t show much interest in finding out who had committed this crime.

Now four males have been arrested, one charged with first-degree murder and the others conspiracy to commit murder, in connection to the slaying.

Police superintendent Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said investigators have turned up receipts that show more than $5,000 was wired to the accused.

He can be seen in a YouTube video speaking at a media conference with the four suspects paraded to the media behind him, each with a black bandana around his face.

Supt. Bhullar told the media it was a “difficult and important” case and mentioned the money had come through Western Union.

“You can’t understand the shock we are going through right now. The first shock came in March when my brother was killed and then, months later, we discover this second shock,” she said. “We never thought anyone would be capable of doing something like this. We just hope she turns herself into the authorities so she can face the justice system.”

Avninder said the tragically ironic thing about Jaskaran’s life was how private of a man he was, but now, in death, “the whole world” knows about his story.

“I wouldn’t be sharing these details if we weren’t seeking his justice,” she added.

Repeated attempts to call Kaur have been unsuccessful.

New pot laws need expediting

W

hen I was growing up, my parents employed some crazy family management practices, like put it out to the whole clan, “We’re having takeout, what would you like to have for dinner?”

This was the type of thing you did when you didn’t have the internet or 500 TV channels. You let your kids entertain you.

In the case of impromptu takeout nights, there was a catch.

We were buying dinner from one place. We just needed a consensus on what that place would be.

The O.J. Simpson jury probably did less wrangling.

Again, takeout is being legalized for this evening and this evening only as far as this week goes. Just come together on what form that takeout will take and let us know. Or at least show us you have a majority vote.

Eventually, through some debaters making a strong case (“We had burgers last time!” “You always want subs!”) we’d end up with an X-large pizza or bucket of chicken and of the five kids in the family (yes, five kids... those were the days) two were happy, one was indifferent, one sulked as he chewed on a crust (or chicken bone) and one went up to her room and did not eat.

She’d slam her bedroom door.

Meanwhile my dad smiled, as if he enjoyed nothing more than his evening of UN-style family government.

What all this accomplished I am not sure. Entertainment, maybe. Or it preserved the illusion a family is a democracy, when, in fact, the parents have the majority vote.

I wondered why one of them didn’t just come walking through the door with a couple of big pizzas. “If you don’t like it, have a bowl of cereal.”

I think of these times in the wake of the fiasco related to the pot dispensaries in Toronto that were busted this past week, the same way a couple of identical pot dispensaries in York Region were busted months ago.

Bernie O’Neill ently exist (you need to use a lot of apparentlys here, because apparently a lot of people are very confused about what the rules are — even those intimately involved).

Why are they confused (or leaping to fill a vaccuum amid the apparent confusion)?

A government with a young leader who admits to having smoked marijuana as an MP, runs on the promise to legalize marijuana. That government is elected to a majority. Many months pass.

Finally an announcement is made that they hope to have the legislation passed, at some point (hopefully) next year — a year and a half after being elected.

A long time, considering how prevalent the use of this stuff is, whether we like it or not.

York police use something called a “crime map” on their website. If you set it to show you all the drug-related crimes (90 per cent of which appear to be possession of marijuana) between when the Liberals were elected and today, the map lights up with literally hundreds and hundreds of charges.

The other day I saw a driver in a BMW as we crawled along 16th Avenue, holding a marijuana joint out the window (so as not stink up his nice car) between puffs.

York police recently pulled over a driver who was smoking a bong behind the wheel.

I doubt smoking up while driving is going to be allowed under the coming legislation.

But in the wake of no new legislation, people are doing whatever they please, or so it seems.

I wish those in charge — in this case, our government — would just order the large pizza, metaphorically speaking, and get on with it. When it comes to the haze of pot laws, clarity is needed.

Re: $500 collision report fee too high, lawyer tells York police, May 19.

If regional chairman Wayne Emmerson really wants to get the police budget in order, perhaps he should investigate why we have a policy of only one officer per vehicle and that multiple vehicles have to respond to apparently every situation.

On the Victoria Day weekend, I witnessed three vehicles respond to an ambulance call at one of the Promenade condos and two for what appeared to be a simple traffic stop on New Westminster.

That’s a lot of excess cost for what probably could have been handled by one car for each situation with two officers per vehicle.

I have lived in Cornell for 10 years, and am noticing that our neighbourhood streets are not looking as great as they used to.

Many lawns are uncut, and full of long dandelions, especially the strip between the sidewalk and the road.

It is embarrassing.

How hard can it be to get out the lawn mower, or buy a push mower for some exercise, and cut the grass?

Hire a student. There are lots of solutions.

I have called the town offices, and they tell me to give them a list of all of the offending addresses, and they will send someone out to check it out.

Thanks to all of the homeowners who have pride in their property, and look after their lawns beautifully.

If a committee is not struck before then, I’m afraid we will not see electoral reform in time for the next election.

This is a classic manoeuvre used by many previous governments when they wanted to avoid fulfilling election promises.

Congestion can’t be avoided, only managed

There is no solution for congestion.

As the region continues to grow and more people move here, congestion will continue to be an issue.

“If I solved congestion, I wouldn’t be here. I’d be living in a mansion,” said York Region’s roads and traffic operations director Brian Titherington during the region’s first meeting in a the three-part Traffic Beyond the 6ix series.

“Your drive will never be better than today. But we can’t keep building six- and eight-lane roads. Those roads will just fill up, too. Over a 24-hour period, there is plenty of space on our roads. But everyone wants the same three hours.”

Titherington pointed to an oft-quoted industry saying, “Solving congestion by adding lanes is like solving obesity by buying bigger belt.”

Traffic not only impacts where a person chooses to live or work but also their physical and mental health, including being overweight, not eating healthy meals or eating on the run in hopes of missing traffic, lack of physical activity, added stress and lost family time.

“Congestion is more than just counting the minutes in a car,” said leading public sector research consultant, Jodi Shanoff. “Congestion hits at the personal level.”

While frustrating, congestion is a sign of a vibrant and growing community. “When you see lots and lots of trucks, that means the economy is growing,” said Geoffery Wood with the Ontario Trucking Association.

One person suffered a broken leg in a violent crash on Saturday in Markham on Rizal Avenue that left car parts strewn on the street. The actions of whoever pointed a laser at a York Regional Police helicopter last week, if proven, were “criminal and extremely dangerous”, according to Canada’s Transport Minister Marc Garneau.

The incident occurred in the skies over Richmond Hill after midnight last Wednesday, just hours after the launch at Buttonville airport of a federal campaign meant to highlight the dangers of pointing lasers at planes.

Garneau had appeared at the Markham airport the day before, announcing a crackdown on enforcement by federal transport officials after an alarming increase in laser strikes on aircraft.

York Regional Police say the Air2 helicopter was flying over Richmond Hill when the crew was briefly blinded after someone shone a laser at their cockpit.

According to a police statement, the bright light originated in the area of Silver Linden and High Tech Road.

The helicopter’s pilot and tactical officer radioed officers on the ground.

A man from Toronto was arrested.

Police say the pilot and tactical flight officer were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Garneau had used the York Region police helicopter as a backdrop when he officially unveiled the crackdown, and discussed the dangers posed to pilots and air travellers by the small, handheld lasers.

The concentrated beam of light can startle

a flight crew, cause temporary blindness and even permanent eye damage.

Pilots and air carriers have been pressing Ottawa to step up enforcement, saying tough action is needed to curb a “genuine and growing safety and security concern”.

There were almost 600 laser strikes reported to Transport Canada in 2015, up from 502 incidents the year before. Between January and April of this year, there were 148 incidents.

The penalties for anyone caught are a fine of up to $100,000, five years in prison, or both.

Federal transport officials are asking anyone who sees someone pointing a laser at an aircraft to call police.

Valeri Korakhashvili, 22, of Toronto, is charged with endangering persons on an aircraft in flight and obstructing a peace officer.

He is due in court on June 29.

13 drivers charged with impaired Thirteen drivers were arrested from Friday through to Sunday and charged with alcohol and drug-related criminal driving offences, York Regional Police say. Of the arrests, four were a result of collisions.

Officers conducting RIDE spot checks and general patrol resulted in another five impaired drivers and four of the arrests were as a result of concerned citizens calling 911 to report possible impaired drivers.

On Saturday, shortly before 7:30 p.m., York police responded to a collision between a motorcycle and a car on Metro Road and Spring Road in Georgina.

The rider of the motorcycle, a 47-year-old Georgina man, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the car, 20-year-old Justin Clodd, from the Township of Perry, was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with impaired driving cause bodily harm, over 80, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

On Sunday, shortly before 1 a.m., officers responded to a possible impaired driver, called in by a citizen in the area of Hwy. 7 and Hwy. 427 in Vaughan.

When officers arrived, they located three vehicles, including the suspect vehicle that had been involved in a serious collision. As a result, two people were taken to hospital to be treated for their injuries. Brampton resident, 56-year-old Harjit Singh Gill, has been charged with impaired driving cause bodily harm and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle cause bodily harm.

Also on Sunday, shortly before 6 a.m., police responded to a single-vehicle collision in the Major Mackenzie Drive West and Timber Creek Boulevard area in Vaughan.

A red Jeep Wrangler was in the middle of the roadway after striking a hydro pole, police said. The driver of the vehicle, 23-yearold John-Michael Cimicata, was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and over 80.

Canadian Blood Services urges York Region residents to roll up their sleeves for blood donations to help patients in need.

Partly due to new donation rules to protect the blood supply from the Zika virus and due to missed appointments, there have been fewer donations and increased pressure on the blood supply in the GTA, say officials from Canadian Blood Services.

In late April, the not-for-profit organization announced the need for 200,000 blood donations by July. After coming just halfway to that goal, patients at GTA hospitals are still in need of another 100,000 donations over the next few weeks.

“We are pleased by the response we’ve

seen from many returning and new blood donors, but we still need others to get involved,” said Michael Betel, regional director, donor relations.

“It’s very important for Canadians to do their best to keep their blood donation appointments, and even bring a friend or family member to donate, too.”

Donors can sign up to receive text messages as appointment reminders, and all clinics offer walk-ins. In many cases, clinic hours have been extended to help more people donate.

York police are seeking help from the public identifying a suspect, believed to be responsible for a street-level assault in Markham.

On March 18 around 3 a.m. two men in the Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue area were approached by two other men.

They demanded money from both victims, who refused. A

threat was made and one victim was struck in the face.

The thieves ran into a vehicle.

One suspect has been identified and arrested, however a second suspect is still being sought.

He is described as Middle Eastern, 20 to 24, dark hair, wearing a white hoodie style sweater.

In the 1950s, parents thought rock ‘n’ roll was evil and the precursor to juvenile delinquency.

They worried about the impact the music would have on their children.

But today, a whole new crop of youth are revelling in rock ‘n’ roll — along with encouragement from their parents, some of whom are joining their teenaged children on the rock ‘n’ roll stage.

Take Richmond Hill student Jesse Basi.

The Alexander Mackenzie High School student says his parents were the ones who motivated him to start listening to rock.

When he was 3, his parents played a DVD for him of the band U2 performing live.

Even at that tender age, he was drawn to the music.

Jesse spoke about his love of rock Saturday in between sets, performing during the Markham school’s open house.

His mother is in the school’s adult program and he calls her “a late bloomer”.

“You get to play songs you love for an audience…at some venues, you get good audience reaction, people cheering you on. It feels really good.”

Jesse has been in the house band for three years during which he has toured the U.S. playing multiple venues, including Cleveland’s The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and Lincoln Hall in Chicago. The band is bound for the Dominican for a week in July where they will perform.

Ola Schwarzenberg, also in the house band, found her way to rock after abandoning classical music.

The 13-year-old Markham resident is a keyboard player and has classical training in piano. Ola knew she wanted a different genre.

Within six months of attending the School of Rock, the Thornhill student was in the house band.

Her mother, Anna, performed with the School of Rock’s adult house band for two seasons as a singer around the same time Ola started with the school.

“This is a huge self-confidence builder to be able to come on stage and play in front of people. It is a huge benefit,” Anna said.

Ola found that while playing rock music, she was subject to less criticism.

“With classical music, there was always judgment — a wrong note, a wrong rhythm, wrong dynamics,” Anna said. Not so with rock music.

“Everybody was welcoming. Do your best and you are going to fit in,” Anna said. “She can grow by doing this”.

Ola is a Grade 9 student in St. Robert Catholic High School’s International Baccalaureate program.

For Christmas this year, she asked her parents for a bass guitar which they willingly bought, together with an amplifier. She keeps her musical acquisitions in her room and practices with YouTube. She played the bass in one of the house band’s most recent shows.

Lisa LoMagno, 18, says when she started performing in a School of Rock class, she was terrified.

Eventually, confidence replaced her fear.

“I grew into myself and became a better person. It’s taught me a lot,” said LoMagno who is a singer with the house band. ”I learned about myself. I was a very shy person,” said the St. Brother Andre Catholic High School student.

“Over time, some of the songs I thought I would never learn, but I thought if I can do this, I can do anything. You grow to be more sure of yourself.”

Later, the Markham student says: “I would love to do this for the rest of my life”.

Seventy-two years ago, more than 14,000 young Canadian soldiers crossed the English Channel and stormed the beaches of Normandy – heavily defended by German troops in northwestern France.

Markham’s Stam Hems was one of them.

“You can’t understand what it was like if you weren’t there. I could never explain it,” said the Second World War veteran and member of the Markham District Veterans Association.

Hems served as a dispatch rider with the 3rd Canadian Infantry, tasked with transporting supplies and messages on his motorbike from one camp to another.

He spent what seemed like days on the dark and choppy waters of the English Channel and landed at Juno Beach after the battle had taken place.

Known as D-Day – June 6, 1944 – it marks the turn of the Second World War, where Allied troops stormed by land, sea and air and attacked German defences.

Some 340 Canadians were killed at Juno Beach on D-Day. More than 5,000 Canadian soldiers died during the battle of Normandy.

Jonathan is non-verbal and requires roundthe-clock care.

He has a caregiver for eight hours a day and another two hours of daily support through the Community Care Access Centre, an agency that helps residents live independently at home.

While Jonathan attends a day program, his parents provide the rest of their son’s care.

Now, like any young man, Jonathan, who loves music and food, is preparing to leave home, thanks to funding announced by Community and Social Services Minister Helena Jaczek in Aurora last Thursday.

York Region will host one of six new housing initiatives for adults with developmental disabilities, the Oak Ridges-Markham MPP said at a media conference at York Support Services Network.

“Everyone here is committed to building a more inclusive province,” she said.

The network, along with York Region Lifetime Independent Facilitators and Montage Support Services, is launching a pilot program called York Region Why Wait? Collaborative Demonstrative Project.

It will provide innovative and individualized housing solutions for eight adults with developmental disabilities.

The participants have chosen a number of housing models, which include support from caregivers, to meet their needs.

One option will allow roommates to purchase a home through a rent-to-own approach.

Another uses technology to support three residents with safety in their apartment.

Jonathan and a roommate will own a condo, likely in Markham or Richmond Hill, with round-the-clock support from caregivers.

“I think the announcement is great. It is something I didn’t expect was going to come this soon, but it’s a great opportunity for people like Jonathan and us, as well as an opportunity for all other applicants in this

project,” Imelda said.

As they age, Imelda and Ray realize they won’t be able to care for Jonathan at home forever.

“We are aging and we can’t really look after him — maybe another 10 years. It will break our hearts, definitely (for Jonathan) to leave home. We are still able to look after him now, but we can also feel our age kicking in.”

Ray is thrilled there will be a transition period when Jonathan moves in his new home.

“It’s not like we’re losing Jonathan right away. We are able to go there, for instance, overnight. We can volunteer to go give him breakfast, lunch or dinner,” said Ray, who completed his 150th marathon when he ran the Toronto Marathon in May. “So, we’re actively participating and we are also able to see how he adapts and help others coming into services.”

Moving to his own home will benefit Jonathan, who needs more independence from his parents, Imelda said.

“Like any individual, someone his age, he probably feels that too. He doesn’t want his parents to encroach on him. He loves it when he goes to a day program. You can see, he lights up,” she said.

“With us, after dinner, he is sitting there watching the same TV show that we’re watching and he probably doesn’t like that. He probably wants to interact with someone the same age as him.”

Finding housing for adults with developmental disabilities is a challenging and costly process, according to the network.

As of March 31, there were 945 people in the region with immediate housing needs and another 1,152 who will be seeking services in the future, the agency said.

Both numbers are expected to increase, it added.

Jaczek announced $2 million over two years for the six projects across the province, adding the funding is part of the province’s three-year $810 million investment to help transform and modernize developmental services.

Back for its eighth season, the popular, free music series “Thursday Nights at the Bandstand” kicks off an early summer on June 9 at Unionville’s Millennium Bandstand at the corner of Main Street and Fred Varley Drive.

Organized by community-based Unionville Presents and funded by dedicated community-spirited sponsors, the series attracts talented Canadian, international and local performers to the outdoor Millennium Bandstand for all to enjoy free of charge.

This year’s 12 performance series runs on consecutive Thursday evenings from June 9 through Aug. 25 from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

This year’s outstanding line-up kicks off on June 9 with Simply Queen, who will more than “Rock You” with many of the classic hits from Freddie Mercury and the Queen.

Stars Matt Damon and Reese Witherspoon in a promotional photo for Downsizing, which is being shot at locations across the GTA. On Saturday Damon and actor Kristen Wiig were reportedly in Markham shooting a scene. day afternoon that Damon and Kristen Wiig had been at the school that morning for a shoot but had left.

The star of hits like The Martian, The Bourne Identity and Good Will Hunting, Damon is working on a new film titled Downsizing, directed by Alexander Payne.

Billed as a high concept sci-fi social satire, Damon and Reese Witherspoon headline the story of a couple who, deciding their lives have gotten out of hand, voluntarily have themselves

shrunk down.

Unfortunately for the man, his wife backs out at the last minute.

The film will also feature Alec Baldwin, Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Sudeikis, and Christoph Waltz.

Downsizing is set to open on Christmas Day 2017.

This will be the first time Damon has filmed in “Hollywood North” since 1997’s Goodwill Hunting. Witherspoon starred in 2000’s American Psycho which was filmed in Toronto.

Was Matt Damon in Markham?

If you are a student at Bur Oak Secondary School, you might want to check out one of his films, which is scheduled to hit screens late next year, to see if you can recognize which scene was shot at your school.

There have been multiple sightings of the Hollywood filmmaker the past month at locations across Toronto including at York University (where an administration building served as a stand-in for a hospital) and the Beaches area near Lake Ontario.

He was also rumoured to be shooting scenes at the University of Waterloo.

Now it appears he was at Bur Oak Secondary School on Saturday for filming of his latest project.

Production trucks and cars were parked behind the school Saturday morning.

A large number of film crew trucks were seen at a church not far away on 16th Avenue on Friday night.

Mohammad Nour, 11, (right) and his brother Ahmad, 9, joined the Markham Irish Canadian Rugby Football Club’s youth program shortly after immigrating to Canada.

Prior to arriving in Unionville as Syrian refugees in mid December last year, Mohammad Nour and his brother, Ahmad, had no idea what rugby was.

But with just a few months under their belts as Canadian residents, they now know what the game entails.

In fact, they’ve since taken to the Austin Park pitch in Markham as budding members of the Markham Irish Canadian Rugby Football Club’s youth program.

Mohammad, 11, is a member of the under-12 team while Ahmad, nine, is playing with the under-10 contingent.

The pair’s presence in the sport would not have been possible were it not for the support they’ve received from Gareth Callaway, a Markham Irish Canadian Rugby Football Club coach and a former rugby referee who also took in the pair’s family on their arrival from Turkey last year.

whenever he took his own kids to their respective team practices.

“They had never even heard of (rugby),” he recalled. “It was completely foreign to them.”

With Mohammad playing the tackle version of the sport and Ahmad the flag version, the pair are learning the rudiments of the game.

Acknowledging they are still grasping the game’s concepts, each has their own reasons for enjoying the sport.

Since 1983

For Mohammad it’s the physicality.

“Tackle, but sometimes you get hurt. Today (Saturday) I hurt my finger. It’s not really easy, it’s harder than soccer. I like rugby and soccer,” he said.

As for Ahmad, it’s about stopping the ball carrier through grabbing the flag they wear.

“I like to get the flag...is it difficult to play?....mmm,” he said.

But Callaway was quick to point out, the brothers are having fun.

Grace Brown peacefully passed away.

She resided in Fenelon Falls and previously in Markham. Grace was in her 86th year. She will be sorely missed by her loving daughter Lesley Brown. She is survived by her sister Luella of Winnipeg, MB, and her sister Beverley of Kenora, ON. She was pre-deceased by her brother Carmen in 1984. Grace will be fondly remembered by Sylvia and Warren Haydu and Randy and Marilyn Brown.

Grace was a very active community member. She was very involved in the Canadian Cancer Society. She drove for Community Care, sold daffodils and canvassed wholeheartedly. She enjoyed many activities, such as curling, golfing, dancing and being involved in community events. Lionel Purcell loved his ponies and people

f you take a look at Lionel Purcell’s life, you’ll learn it’s impossible to find someone he didn’t help.

Whether it was serving his country, engaging in his community or helping his family, Lionel had a heart that never lacked room for anyone in need.

His candle burned long and bright before his passing on May 12 at the age of 95.

He’s survived by his wife of 59 years, Rita; and their four children, Carrie, Mark, Blair and Holly; four grandchildren, Blake, Kathryn, Andrew and Christopher; and his brother Vernon.

Blair Purcell said his father taught his family the importance of giving. “There was good in giving” he used to tell them.

Following his memorial service last month, Lionel was taken on a final ride through the Highland Hills cemetery in Gormley. Fittingly, two ponies pulled the carriage.

Beyond his family, Lionel is remembered for his tireless volunteer work across Scarborough and Markham, and for his Whitchurch-Stouffville farm that brought endless joy for thousands of children and their families.

Lionel and his wife Rita started Lionel’s Pony & Petting Farm in 1963 at their then Scarborough farm, near Birchmount Avenue and Steeles Avenue. In 1981, he and his family moved to McCowan Road in Stouffville and continued Lionel’s Farm operations.

His farm served as a fun learning experience for people of all ages who would learn everything about agriculture

from processing grain to brushing a pony. As part of his legacy, Lionel’s Farm is still owned and operated by his family today.

“He was a man before his time,” said his son Blair. “Some of the things he’d done with school programs back in the late 1960s and early ‘70s was similar to things in the modern curriculum today.”

Things such as getting children to clip a pony’s hooves, or strip the grain off the stock and remind them that’s the source of their oatmeal breakfast they had in the morning. His hands-on approach left parents and children alike walking out of classes amazed by what they’d learned.

“Mr. Purcell had the unique skill to teach just about anyone about animal agriculture,” said Whitchurch-Stouffville Mayor Justin Altmann. “He was respected and admired by our community members and his famous farm has provided thousands of people near and far with the opportunity to experience agriculture.”

Before opening his farm, Lionel worked as a realtor, following the footsteps of his father. He would often sell plots of farms in Scarborough and Markham, including the land for the Markham Fairgrounds. At 17 years old in 1937, Lionel was the youngest person at the time to receive his real estate licence in this area, Blair said.

But shortly after receiving that licence, Lionel enlisted in the Canadian army’s armoured regiment. He taught shooting, first in Canada, then in Europe shortly after D-Day. He went through Holland, Belgium, France and Germany before returning to Canada to continue his tireless efforts to help others.

“He found enjoyment in being involved in the community,” Blair said. “That’s why he joined all these organizations, it was important to him to follow the lines and steps of people who laid the foundation before him and hoping people would

His volunteer work stretched across countless organizations.

The Scarborough Lions Club, Scarborough Historical Society, Rouge Valley Foundation, Scarborough planning board, Markham Fair, Canadian Pony Society, Canadian Livestock Records and Royal Agricultural Winter Fair were some of the organizations he volunteered with.

Lionel became known in Scarborough and York Region for taking in animals others didn’t want.

And he would help others in the community if they needed anything.

“He was always willing to supply carriages, animals, ponies and horses to various events in

Lionel was interested in ponies ever since he had his first one at the age of three. He bred them throughout his life.

His work with the Canadian Pony Society and Canadian Livestock Records reflects his meticulous care and concern for animals.

“He got involved with organizations that governed his animals,” Blair said. “He was always one for proper rules and regulations, it meant a lot for him.”

Blair said his father taught his family the importance of giving.

“There was good in giving” he used to tell them.

“He was never one to say no,”

Blair said. “It was never about receiving anything.”

Lionel achieved much in his life; the Scarborough Walk of Fame named him citizen of the year in 2003 for his work with the Scarborough Historical Society. He was one of five people recognized that year.

Lions Clubs International awarded Lionel the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for his dedication to humanitarian services.

Lions was an organization Lionel greatly cared for but his family always came first.

“He was a family man, loved his family, but he was passionate about the farm. He said ‘if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life’ and that fit him to a T,” Blair said.

Local golfer tops the field in CJGA event at Bondhead Vick Gu led all competitors who took to the fairways for the Canadian Junior Golf Association’s Georgian College Junior Sereies at The Club at Bondhead’s South Course in Bondhead Sunday.

Competing in the Bantam Boys U15 division, the 13-yearold Markham resident shot a tworound, nine over 153 (77-76) to win the title. Gu was just two strokes ahead of Adam Mussani of Greely, who took second.

Acknowledging the competition in his age group provided a formidable challenge, Gu said the key in his succdess was to maintain a clear head and execute safe shots.

“Nicholas Lin (who was fourth) really pushed me during the second round with great ball striking,” said Gu. “But I made my best putts of the year and I am happy to have earned my win.”

Having recently served as the Stingers men’s volleyball club’s assistant coach, Gajic also played with the Stingers and was twice named an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association second team allstar while earning an OCAA silver medal in his freshman season.

Gajic was elated about the chance to take the next step.

“I was a part of the men’s volleyball program as a student-athlete for four years as well as an assistant coach. It’s an opportunity to give back to the college that has done so much for me,” he said in a news release.

With a berth in the final on the line, Markham required just a draw and did that after battling Hamilton Sparta to a 2-2 tie Sunday.

Men’s firsts beat Waterloo

Rugby club to host mini/ minor tourney Sunday

The Markham Irish Canadian Rugby Football Club men’s firsts won their second Ontario Rugby Union Marshall Division match in as many outings with a 21-17 road win over Waterloo County Saturday.

Colin Philips, Jonny Sheridan and Gavin Howe each recorded one try for Markham. Marco Ilic kicked three conversions.

In the men’s seconds match, Waterloo downed Markham 35-14.

Arthur Welsher and Darryl Snider each had one try for Markham, now 0-1-1.

Michael Sheridan kicked two conversions.

The Markham men are scheduled to resume league play in a night match at Fletcher’s Field Friday starting at 7 p.m.

In women’s action, Markham won their opening Toronto Rugby match over Oakville 19-5 at Fletcher’s Field Saturday.

Christina Branch, Ann Capra and Abbey Tross each had one try for Markham. Misha Maric kicked two conversions.

Budding rugby players will be taking to the Markham Irish Canadian Rugby Club’s Austin Drive pitch when the club hosts their inaugural mini/minor tournament Sunday starting at 9 a.m. The tournament will host five teams in each of the Under-Eight, Under-10 and Under-12 age groups.

Jim Monk, a Markham Irish Canadian Rugby Club spokesman, anticipates the event will include upwards of 200 players, coaches, parents and siblings.

“It should be a very busy and exciting time,” he said.

Monk said their club has attended mini tournaments for a number of years as far away as Brantford, Peterborough and Lindsay.

With these centres successfully hosting events, the local club saw no reason they could not try it.

“It was decided that to grow the sport in our city we really needed to step up and host a tournament to allow our community to get up close and personal and see what great energy and excitement the players have for our sport,” he said.
