General Motors vehicles might have to carry a ‘Made in Markham’ sticker. The automaker announced last week it is expanding its engineering and software development core with a focus on new automotive

systems and technologies for the future. Part of the expansion includes building a new research and development facility in Markham. “We are very proud of Markham’s status as Canada’s high-tech capital and thrilled that the new General Motors’ R&D centre is com-

ing to Markham,” Mayor Frank Scarpitti said. “With over 1,100 high-tech and life sciences companies, our city is an ideal location for this new centre for information technology and automotive innovation.” New engineering work will focus on autonoSee GM, page 4.

GM is adding an additional engineering 1,000 jobs, with about 300 to be in the existing Oshawa tech centre and the remainder housed in the new Markham facility. “General Motors’ announcement is very welcome, and not surprising – more and more hightech firms are selecting York Region for their operations,” York Region chairperson and CEO Wayne Emmerson said. “Our extensive investments in modern infrastructure, rapid transit, complete communities and economic development make us an extremely attractive location for leading-edge technology firms.” The exact location and investment amount into Markham’s software development centre have yet to be announced. Markham is already home to Honda Canada’s headquarters as well as MOBIS, a parts and logistics distribution facility for Hyundai and Kai. Recently announced, CieNET Technologies is set to buid the Canadian Centre fo Excellence for automotive technologies and the Ford 2017 GT supercar will feature Multimatic parts, another Markham company.

York Region will review the EA study area and identify potential improvements to accommodate existing and future transportation needs for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and motorists.

York Region will be asking the public, residents and stakeholders for feedback throughout the EA study. Information about open houses and updates will be published in this newspaper, on york.ca/ea and on York Region’s social media channels, Facebook and Twitter.

Parks are not just child’s play anymore. As municipalities are charged with hefty intensification targets, parks and open spaces need to accommodate more people as well as a wider range of uses. Gone are the days of a square piece of land with some grass and a jungle gym – especially in dense urban areas. There is a new wave of thinking around designing animated parks and spaces for everyone in the community. “As communities intensify, municipalities have to start thinking of parks differently,” said Jake Tobin Garrett, policy and research manager with Park People. “Park space has to be a lot different things for different people and accommodate different activities.” Park People is an independent charity that

aims to build stronger communities through parks and public spaces. Park People recently released a report, Thriving Places, that looks and how parks and public spaces fit into intensified urban designs. And two York Region municipalities are ahead of the curve when it comes to designing public spaces in urban places. Markham’s Dollar Hamlet Park and Simcoe Promenade and Newmarket’s Riverwalk Commons are among a dozen Ontario parks highlighted in the report, which serves as a resource guide for municipalities. Often municipalities look to places such as New York or San Francisco, Tobin Garrett said, where there are any number of unique park spaces. Single-purpose parks – a patch of grass with a playground and playing field – won’t work in urban areas. That’s not to say there isn’t a need for those types of parks. But as an area intensifies, so too does park

activity and use, Tobin Garrett said. “In an urban area, there will be more people using the park at all times of the day,” he said. “Those living nearby who don’t have a backyard, workers on their lunch, visitors, cultural festivals and farmers markets.” Along with a description of each of the dozen case studies, the Thriving Places report includes lessons learned to help inspire other municipalities. Markham’s Simcoe Promenade is an example of how public transit can co-exist with public space. The first phase of the park – completed in 2013 and costing about $400,000 – runs parallel to the rapidway between Rouge Valley Drive and Birchmount Road. The plan is to extend the promenade all the way from Warden Avenue to Kennedy Road, creating a pedestrian park-like corridor running through Markham’s high-density downtown centre.

“It’s more than road here, park there,” said Markham’s parks and open space manager, Linda Irvine. “It’s more than just waiting for a bus. People are walking, strolling, talking to friends, coming out of their apartments or shops. It’s a pleasant place to be.” Public spaces, especially in urban, highdensity areas, have to have a purpose, she added. Markham’s Dollar Hamlet Park, in the Hwy. 7 and Leslie Street area, was also featured in the Thriving Places. The park was completed in 2008 at a cost of $445,000. This is one of many parks in Markham to feature a circular pathway. This was done on purpose, assures Irvine, offering a different way to experience the park. “Nowadays, everyone is tracking their steps,” she said. “You’re walking within the park, not just from one edge to the other. So, it doesn’t feel like exercise.”

This is the one week of the year that we feature these rather Neanderthal Steaks, and they have become the Father’s Day tradition at our store. They are a single bone, thick-cut from the more tender end of a prime rib, and they are quite an episode on the grill, so we’ll have instructions. I’m thinking that a large one will serve two, although I have seen some pretty hungry men! Further, this year they are all ‘Prime’ grade from Alberta. Quite simply, it doesn’t get better! Bone-In (my fave) (It will be best to order these LB because we always sell out.)

Markham Village Music Festival returns this weekend.

Music festival set to light up Village By Amanda Persico

apersico@yrmg.com

Music is a shared language. Celebrate the 39th annual Markham Village Music Festival this week, with activities and entertainment starting Thursday. The children’s carnival kicks off June 16 and 17, 5 to 10 p.m. at Morgan Park and features amusement rides, food, games, crafts and, art and music. The annual music festival kicks off Friday at 6 p.m. and runs through to Saturday evening, featuring more than 40 different acts on five stages along Main Street Markham. “Music transcends all cultures,” said Kevin Ker, entertainment director for the festival committee. There is something for everyone during the festival, from country, rock, blues, latin and jazz, Ker said. Residents and local shops have been looking forward to the annual festival, Ker said. And after a couple years of construction that closed Main Street Markham, this is a welcome event. “This is so important for the shops,” Ker said. “This is the biggest celebration on the street.” This year, there is a strong emphasis on new bands and original music – there are only about a dozen or so returning acts, the rest are new to the festival stage. More than 30 local bands will be performing during the festival as well. “A lot of festivals have tribute bands,” Ker said. “This festival is special. We want to celebrate the creative side of music.” Along with a collection of original bands, the festival will feature the Taste of Markham musical series with performances scattered throughout Friday evening and Saturday morning. “You could walk from end of the street to the other and travel the world a little bit,” Ker said. Taste of Markham is a series of cultural acts, including Hawaiian, Japanese, Bollywood, Irish and East Indian dance groups. “Markham is such a culturally diverse city,” Ker said. “We wanted to showcase that diversity.” Markham’s School of Rock will also be hosting a battle of the bands Saturday evening and festival favourite, What About Bob will be performing at the festival after-party Saturday night at the Duchess of Markham. Main Street Markham is closed between Hwy. 7 and Bullock Drive from Friday at 3 p.m. and will reopen Saturday around 11 p.m. There will also be a petting zoo as well as food and craft venders along the street. And the farmers market is taking place Saturday, between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at 132 Robinson St. To see a full schedule, visit markhamfestival.com

BEEF CHOPS CHERRIES TExAS

from what I know, that's the important part. Cherries are sized by 'rows' within a given distance. If you get fewer rows, it means that the cherries are larger. '12 row' is rather small and disappointing, whereas 8½ or 9 row are pretty big. What we have this week are 8½ row Bings from Washington State. If you are With Cherries, it's best to think big! The reason is thinking Cherries, these are definitely that the pits grow first, and then the 'meat'. If you what you want! buy the smaller sizes, you get more pit than meat, and LB

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

A wonderful, flawed friend

Take action on frauds

I

know I’ve shared this story before, about how when I was a kid I wondered if Americans think our red and white flag is inspired by what Canadians look like after miles and miles behind the wheel with the window down, left arm resting on the door, left side of the face exposed to the sun.

That’s what my father looked like for most of my summers in the days before air-conditioned cars, as the driver on camping trips to exotic spots in the U.S. (although these days with our weak dollar, maybe that’s a trip for some time in the future). Or at least we thought of the trips as exotic. I imagine we often just looked tired or grumpy. In a long trip in a cramped car, you’re soon reading each other’s thoughts — particularly my mother’s, who not far into each trip was thinking, “Never again! Why am I doing this? I must be mad!” After the first day, Dad looked like a lobster that had been held over a pot and cooked on one side. Eventually he developed a “half-tan”, as we called it, the kind of braising you get when you’re a Canadian piloting a station wagon on great adventures of cultural and geographic exploration across the United Steaks of America. We saw North and South Dakota, North and South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and all its awe-inspiring federal buildings, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio and Michigan, and many points in between. The Kennedy Space Center, museums, arenas and roadside eateries. There was Wisconsin, known for its dairy farms, with an odour to match. We once saw a bumper sticker that read, “Smell our dairy air.” You didn’t need to be in French immersion to get the joke. More than just the scenery, the history and the smells, it was the people we met that made the trips fascinating. We like to believe that Americans are all the same. But on those trips I often found the opposite to be true — that if we met travellers from Halifax or Winnipeg we all seemed to find ourselves to be very similar. But the Americans were different from us and each other.

Bernie O’Neill Regional accents, how people dressed, how loudly they spoke, the expressions they used. Like the Kentuckian named Kyle who called me “ya’ll”. I’d be turning around to see who else he was speaking to. And the people from “Bah Haba, Mayin” (Bar Harbor, Maine) I understood even less. I still think of America these days in the belief it has to be the greatest country on the planet — no offence to my fellow Canadians and Canada, my beloved home. At the same time, America is like one of those wonderful, big, loud, inspiring and yet flawed people you might meet in life, who has all these great qualities yet some type of weakness that always knocks them back a notch or two in life, despite all the steps they take forward. Or someone whose strength is also their weakness. For the Americans it’s a steadfast belief in freedom and the Constitution protecting the rights of individuals from the whims of government. “Live free or die”, as you will see on licence plates in the northeast. I firmly believe the freedoms we have in Canada are possible because Americans stand up for them on behalf of the free world. But included in that Constitution is the right for people to bear arms. Which may have made sense 200 years ago, in the time of muskets with a small population of colonists in revolution against England, but can be a problem today, in the era of high-powered assault rifles, big cities, and fanaticism. The Orlando shooting was actually one of dozens of mass shootings in the U.S. this year, reports say. It was the worst, so far. It would be wonderful if it were also the last, but something fundamental would have to change for that to happen.

Telephone scams and frauds are a very serious attack on all Canadian people, but especially the vulnerable senior segment. The Canada Revenue Agency scam has been going on for about a year now. Older people are falling prey and are being duped out of thousands of dollars daily. The threat of arrest for people who are not savvy is taken seriously and the perpetrators are making millions of dollars. This is happening all across Canada. My brother in Newfoundland and people in Prince George, B.C., have also received these same threatening calls. I have spoken to York Regional Police who say they get about 10 visits or calls a day from people who are worried that they are about to be arrested. They referred me to the RCMP. So, I called the RCMP in Newmarket. They are also very aware of this scam, but say they are powerless to stop

it, as fraudsters are fast moving. They seem to have multiple phone numbers, including an Ottawa exchange (a 1-613 number, which I personally got this week.) I have many thoughts on this as to what the federal government can do: 1) Initiate a public awareness campaign through all media outlets ... radio, TV, newspapers and social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc. 2) Direct the RCMP to make this a priority. If someone were threatening the security of the Parliament buildings or the prime minister, they would be found. 3) Direct Rogers/Bell/ Telus etc. to block these numbers immediately as they become known. 5) Customers should be able to report scam numbers to their local provider through a special number so that they can be blocked. There are ways to attack this serious threat, but it seems as though everyone is throwing their hands up and doing nothing to stop it.

I implore the federal government to take the initiative on behalf of all Canadians. It would be a welcome relief.

Build for seniors Re: Bidding adieu to the home of your dreams, June 9. I am a Unionville retiree and an empty nester owning a large home. My wife and I would like to sell and move to an appropriate home in the area. We find condos too expensive for the space paid for and the condo fees are killers. Seniors need bungalows with ease of access (i.e. single storey units). So why don’t builders build more of these senior housing communities for boomers such as we see in Ballantrae? This would free up a lot of housing inventory as well.

Markham properties have increased in value on average 45 per cent since the last provincewide assessment completed in 2012, according to Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) numbers. On average, singledetached homes have increased by more than 47 per cent. Condo units increased 16 per cent. The assessment in 2012 was used to calculate property taxes from 2013 to 2016.

“Real estate is very hot. People don’t have to wait for this (assessment) to know that,” Mayor Frank Scarpitti said. “This is always a fun discussion. And it’s even more fun to explain it to the public.” This assessment will be used to calculate property taxes between 2017 and 2020. The city phases in increases to offset the impact on property taxes. If the average home was valued at $576,910 in 2016, based on the 2012 assessment, the value would climb to $642,683 for 2017 property taxes, Please join us on

$708,455 for 2018, $774,228 for 2019 and finally $840,000 for 2020. So residents will see on average an 11.8 per cent increase in value for single-detached homes and 4 per cent for condos from 2016 to 2017. But don’t panic. The increase in property value does not translate into extra money in the city’s coffers. “I always hear, ‘Oh, Markham must be loving this. Markham must be really happy,’” Scarpitti said. “Assessments go up, that doesn’t mean city revenue goes up,” he said. But there is some math at play. Homes where the value has increased more than the city average will see an increase in property taxes relative to the citywide average. And vice versa if the property value is less than the city average. For instance, if a home’s value increased by 12.9 per cent - as is the case in Ward 3 - those residents can expect to see a 1.1 per cent increase on their tax bill. “The increase might be $20, not astronomical like $2,000,” deputy mayor and Regional Councillor Jack Heath said. “Wait until the 2017 tax bill. It will all work out.” New is a shorter appeal timeframe: residents have 120 days to appeal their assessments, which were mailed out this week. For more, visit mpac.ca

Millennials need reality check BY JOANNA LAVOIE

jlavoie@insidetoronto.com

Newlyweds Tripti Ninan and Ryan Perera are Millennials and purchased their first home in Toronto just under a year ago. Based on their combined income and the down payment they were able to come up with, the couple bought a 700-square-foot, one-bedroom-plus-den condo unit in Toronto’s west end near a subway station. “We knew our first step would be a condo. We wanted to start small and we wanted something low maintenance,” said Ninan. “And for us, location was key because we wanted to be close to transit. I did not want ridiculous commutes anymore.” Ninan, a 30-year-old marketing professional who works downtown, and 27-year-old Perera, an aerospace engineer whose office is near Pearson Airport, understood sacrifices were required to make their dream a reality. About five years ago, they both started setting aside money for their wedding and future home purchase. “We were actually planning for quite a few years and saving up,” said Perera. “We saved for both our wedding and our property even before we knew what kind of place we wanted and how big the wedding would be.” Ninan, who also paid her own way through college and university, said she was lucky to have taken a few financial courses and had a good understanding of what was involved in getting into the Toronto real estate market. It also helped that both Ninan and

Perera’s parents have purchased a condo in the last five years and they were actively involved in helping their parents navigate the experience. “We took what we learned from our parents and applied it when the time came to buy a condo,” she said. The couple sacrificed having a second vehicle to save more money and followed the guidance of their financial advisor, Darlene Wang, who advised them about maximizing their investments and the importance of budgeting. “We don’t go on crazy shopping sprees at all and we’re smart with our purchases; no impulse buying,” Perera said. “But we’re still enjoying life. Short-term sacrifices mean longterm gains,” added Ninan. In the next four or five years, the couple said, they’ll likely sell their condo and get a house. Depending on what they want and their needs, they did admit they’d consider moving outside Toronto proper. ••••• Getting into the Toronto real estate market isn’t impossible for Millennials (those ages 18 to 35), but it’s no walk in the park. See PLAN, page 13.

Purchasing a property in the city’s hot market requires two things: preparation and the willingness to compromise. For the last 16 years, financial advisor Wang has helped scores of young adults to get their finances in order so they can buy their first home in Toronto. “You have to be realistic in terms of what you want and what you can get. If you have an ego, you can’t play this game,” said Wang, who admitted the likelihood of Millennials purchasing a detached home in the city as their first property is slim. According to a recent report by Altus Group for the Building Industry and Land Development Association, the average price for a newer detached home in the GTA was $1.05 million, which is more than double what it cost a decade ago and 21 per cent higher than just over a year ago. “An actual standalone home in the GTA will be near impossible unless you have two steady incomes over $100,000,” Wang explained. “Millennials have to start with a condo to build equity, a townhouse, or a small bungalow, or (purchase) not in the GTA.” To help her clients get ready to get into the Toronto market, Wang, who works for Investors Group, helps future homebuyers sort out their priorities and come up with a plan of action to maximize their finances in a set time frame. Getting “house ready” as she put it, requires a change of mindset, a new way of living. “You need to sacrifice more than ever and make smart decisions,” said Wang, adding under-

standing what’s involved in reaching your goals helps avoid disappointment. Wang said Millennials aren’t usually thinking about getting their finances in order and saving up for a down payment on a property. “In their head it’s “pay back me” time,” she said, noting most Millennials in the 18 to 30 age range are in school or just finishing up their first post-secondary degree or diploma, usually carry school debt, have no kids, and want to travel and party. Under her guidance, Wang has helped her clients to get “house ready” by tracking their spending, making small adjustments to their budget, investing wisely, and being realistic about vacations and big purchases. “Incomes have nowhere near increased the way real estate has increased. You must learn to do more with less,” she said. Real estate broker Frank Leo, who has been serving clients in Toronto and the GTA for 28 years, said for Millennials the biggest thing is the pressure of being “squeezed out of the market.” Leo, of RE/MAX West Realty Ltd., advises young buyers to avoid jumping into the market before doing their research, specifically knowing exactly what they want and can afford. “A good representative on your side helps keep your emotions in check,” he said. “If a property isn’t what you need or want then don’t buy it.” He added those between the ages of 18 to 35 who want to purchase a property in Toronto need to take a close look at their needs and based on their budget a good

realtor will be able to help find the right home to buy. “If you buy well, that’s a good investment. If you buy poorly then you’re in trouble. You want to make sure you have someone who knows their stuff to give you the best advice,” he said. Leo also said Millennials need to realize it’s not likely they’ll be buying the home of their dreams the first time around. “Often, the first property is a stepping stone that fits your current needs and one that will get a good

York Regional Police have arrested one of several suspects in relation to a scam that saw a senior couple lose about $600,000. One victim, an 85-year-old woman, approached YRP about the issue in February. She and her 88-year-old husband began receiving calls about three years ago telling them they won a lottery they entered. Although initially cautious, the woman was convinced to send money, supposedly to cover the costs of paperwork that needed to be done to process her winnings. In the years that followed, the couple was contacted numerous times with a series of scams. The York Regional Police Major Fraud Unit

NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE #2 407 Transitway - Kennedy Road to Brock Road – Regional Municipalities of York and Durham THE PROJECT The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is proposing a 18 km segment of a transitway facility along the Highway 407 corridor through York Region and Durham Region, from east of Kennedy Road in the City of Markham to east of Brock Road in the City of Pickering (407 Transitway). The 407 Transitway includes Markham Road Station, Ninth Line Station, Donald Cousens Parkway Station, Whites Road Station and Brock Road Station; and three protected sites near McCowan Road, York-Durham Line and Rossland Road. Subject to the outcome of the study, the 407 Transitway will be implemented initially as bus rapid transit (BRT) with the opportunity to convert to light rail transit (LRT) in the future. This 18 km segment forms part of the 150 km long high-speed interregional facility planned to be ultimately constructed on a separate right-of-way that parallels Highway 407 from Burlington to Highway 35/115, with stations, parking and access connections. This transitway is a component of the official plans of the stakeholder municipalities and of the Province’s commitment to support transit initiatives in the Greater Golden Horseshoe through the Metrolinx Regional Transportation Plan.

THE PROCESS The environmental impact of this transit project will be assessed according to the transit project assessment process as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings. As part of the transit project assessment process, an Environmental Project Report (EPR) will be prepared. The Notice of Commencement for the Transit Project Assessment Process and release of the EPR will be published in this local newspaper in the future. All information produced as part of this project is available at www.407transitway.com. Members of the public, agencies and other interested parties are encouraged to participate actively in the transit project assessment process by attending consultation activities or contacting staff directly with information, comments or questions. A Public Information Centre (PIC) was held in April 2015. It presented information on past studies, need and justification, existing conditions, objectives, station sites and route alternatives, and the technically preferred station sites and route alternative to the public. PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE (PIC) #2 PIC #2 will be held in two different locations: Date: June 22, 2016 Time: 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Location: Claremont Community Centre Lions Room 4941 Old Brock Road, Claremont, ON L1Y 1A9

Date: June 23, 2016 Time: 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Location: Markham Museum Main Building 9350 Markham Road, Markham, ON L3P 3J3

PIC #2 will consist of an informal drop-in centre. The technically preferred route alignment and stations, impacts and mitigation measures will be presented at this PIC. MTO staff and their consultants will be on hand to answer any questions and to receive your input. COMMENTS We are interested in hearing any comments that you may have about this study. Comments and information regarding this study are being collected to assist the study team in meeting the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. Information will be collected in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. With the exception of personal information, all comments will become part of the public record. York’s LGBTQ community shows love

BY LISA QUEEN and KIM ZARZOUR

lqueen@yrmg.com/kzarzour@yrmg.com

Amid the hatred and violence, there is love and hope. As members of York Region’s lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgendered and queer (LGBTQ) community and their supporters struggle this week to absorb the shock of the massacre of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando early Sunday, they are also speaking of their determination to forge stronger ties of understanding in the community. The shooting by a lone gunman at the Pulse nightclub, which left 49 victims dead and another 53 injured in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, came just before a series of Pride events in York this week, including flag raisings in Vaughan and Georgina, a vigil in Markham and the annual Pride Parade in Richmond Hill. At Vaughan’s flag raising Monday morning, Amanda Knegje, the York Region president of PFLAG Canada, the only national organization that helps Canadians with issues of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, recalled watching the horror of the shooting on her television. “It was horrific, it was on the news, it was everywhere. We have these moments in our lives we will always remember where we were. And as a proud gay woman, in Canada, in York Region, to be sitting there with my son, enjoying the liberties that I have in so-called safety, to hear something like that and just the magnitude of it, rocked me to the core,” the Richmond Hill resident said. “Because the reality is we have a sense of safety, but I’m sure the people in Orlando had a sense of safety, as well. It reminds us that hate exists and is prominent and it’s scary. I will certainly always remember that moment of hearing about the loss of life and, really, the loss of the feeling of safety and knowing we have so much more work to do.” Knegje is struggling to understand where such hate can come from. “Hate exists in groups, it exists in a lot of different sectors. But, for me personally, I would like to believe that kind of hate is the random act of one individual who had obviously suffered from something inside because that kind of act against humanity, against the LBGTQ community, against people in general, it’s mind-boggling to think it could be part of something greater,” she said. “But the reality is, again, that hate exists and there are probably many people who feel the same way. It’s scary, but it’s important to say that, because it’s important to recognize we do have work to do.”

Happy Father’s Day Find the right Father’s Day gift for your dad

Even if your father or husband loves what he does for a living, a gift that indulges one of his favorite hobbies may be just the thing to make this Father’s Day extra special. Outdoorsmen may prefer some new camping or fishing gear, while fathers who

What does Dad need? Sometimes the best gifts are what a recipient needs as opposed to what he wants. If you no longer live at home, ask your mother if there’s anything your father needs that would make his life easier or more enjoyable. If you live at home, pay close attention to your father to see if there’s anything that could lighten his load. For example, if Dad loves spending time in the garden, take a sneak peek at his gardening tools and replace any that have grown dull or rusty.

What does Dad want? For the Dad who doesn’t seem to need anything, consider something he may want that he’s never

had before. If Dad loves to cook but has never had formal training, enroll him in a cooking class. If Dad loves a local sports team but hasn’t been to a game in years, purchase tickets to a game and go with him to make the day even more special.

Is Dad a techie? Dads with a love for technology are living in the golden age of gadgets. Father’s Day shoppers looking to satisfy their fathers’ love of technology have a host of possibilities at their disposal. Even if Dad is an early adopter who tends to get all the latest gadgets before anyone else, the tech industry evolves so rapidly that you’re bound to find something new on Dad’s wish list that he hasn’t purchased yet. Finding the right Father’s Day gift can be challenging. But shoppers who stop to think about their father and what makes him happy can unearth a host of gift ideas Dad is sure to love.

Father’s Day is an annual celebration of fathers and the contributions they make to their families. Dads get their due on Father’s Day, when sons, daughters and wives typically give dad a few gifts to show their appreciation for all he has done for them and how much he means to them. Finding the right Father’s Day gift is not always so easy. No two fathers are the same, so while a silk necktie might bring a smile to one father’s face, such a gift may fall flat with other dads. By asking themselves a few questions in the weeks before their dads’ big day, Father’s Day shoppers can narrow down their options and find gifts that Dad will appreciate.

Enjoyable ways to spend Father’s Day

Always Dad pleasing, Happy Father’s Day

On this special day, Dad may deserve a dinner that stands apart from more routine family meals. A specially cooked meal that the entire family prepares together or a reservation at a favorite restaurant will no doubt bring a smile to Dad’s face. Make sure that the meal includes his favorite foods.

Favourite activity Plan the day around an activity that Dad enjoys. If he’s an avid fisherman, this could mean taking the rods out and spending a few hours seeing what’s biting. Or it may involve attending a ball game, watching his favorite movie or playing a few rounds of golf. Father’s Day is a special day that many fathers would insist is even better when spent with family.

Fathers do a lot for their families, and many fathers have hectic daily schedules. Come Father’s Day, Dad may just desire a day when he’s not called on to do anything. Many dads and father figures will attest that Father’s Day is special because they get to spend it with their families. While the gifts might be nice, it’s the time together that dads truly cherish. Family members who want to make Father’s Day extra special this year may want to put extra effort into customizing Father’s Day fun rather than shopping for gifts. So what equates to a fun-filled and enjoyable day for fathers? That all depends on Dad’s interests. While no two fathers are the same, there are some universal ideas that can make for a memorable Father’s Day.

Have your say on the province’s plan to build a rapid bus lane that runs on Hwy. 407. Public information centres for the 407 Transitway plans between Kennedy Road in Markham to Brock Road in Pickering are taking place next week. The first is June 22, 4 to 8 p.m. at the Claremont Community Centre in Pickering. The second is June 23, 4 to 8 p.m. at the Markham Museum, 9350 Markham Rd. The Ministry of Transportation is proposing an 18-km rapid bus right-of-way that runs along Hwy. 407 with up to eight stations. This section is part of a larger plan to build 150 km parallel to Hwy 407 from Burlington to Hwy. 35/115 west of Peterborough.

Last month, Markham councillors heard from a transportation consultant on the state of the 407 Transitway plans. And several Markham councillors argued the plan, which construction is about 20 years out, is already outdated. The plan calls for eight possible station locations, with stations at Markham Road, Ninth Line, Donald Cousens Parkway, Whites Road and Brock Road. Not only does the city want to see an accelerated time frame, but also a station at McCowan Road as well as plans to restrict traffic in local residential neighbourhoods, more tree planting initiatives, bird friendly designs and state of the art stormwater management plans for the proposed stations. For more information, visit 407transitway. com

NOTICE OF STUDY COMPLETION Highway 404 from 407 ETR to Green Lane (W.O. 03-20024) Class Environmental Assessment and Preliminary Design Study STUDY The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has retained MMM Group Limited to undertake the Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) and Preliminary Design Study for the 26 km section of Highway 404 from the 407 ETR to Green Lane, in the Regional Municipality of York. The study area is shown on the key plan. The objectives of the study are to assess and identify rehabilitation, operational and safety improvements throughout the study corridor and develop a plan that includes contract staging and sequencing for future construction projects. The recommended plan includes the following: • Proposed widening of Highway 404 to accommodate an additional High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane in each direction. The widening will occur within the existing median between the northbound and southbound lanes. • Proposed interchange improvements at 16th Avenue and at Mulock Drive. • Carpool lot and ramp reconfiguration at Major MacKenzie Drive. • Proposed bridge improvements to accommodate widening. • Additional illumination will be provided as required. • Storm water management and drainage improvements.

A man faces stunt driving charges after a York Regional Police officer spotted a motorcycle travelling 117 kilometres per hour over the speed limit. Just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday, the officer was conducting speed enforcement in the Hwy. 7 and Hunters Point Drive area in Richmond Hill. The officer heard, then saw the blue Yamaha motorcycle on Hwy. 7. A speed measuring device showed the bike was travelling 197 km/h in the 80 km/h zone. A 21-year-old Vaughan man is charged with dangerous driving, stunt driving and speeding. His motorcycle was impounded for seven days and his licence was suspended.

THE PROCESS This study followed the approved environmental planning process for Group ‘B’ projects under the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000). The Preliminary Design study has been completed and a Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) has been prepared. The TESR documents the details of the recommended plan, the anticipated environmental and property impacts, proposed mitigation measures, and a summary of consultation undertaken throughout the study. The TESR is available for a 30-day public review period from Thursday, June 16, 2016 to Monday, July 18, 2016 on the project website (www.hwy404eastudy.ca) and during regular business hours at the following locations: Ministry of Transportation Central Region - Building D - 3rd Floor Planning and Environmental Office 159 Sir William Hearst Avenue Toronto, ON M3M 0B7 Mon – Fri: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

A York Regional Police traffic cop was left red faced Sunday morning after his SUV rearended the very car he had just pulled over. The incident occurred just after 6 p.m. on Esna Park Drive, near Woodbine Avenue in Markham. It was caught on another driver’s rear-facing camera as he passed the intersection. The video shows the officer getting out of his vehicle and approaching the motorist’s window before the police vehicle begins slowly rolling forward.

Moments before it collides with the car in front, the officer desperately tries to stop his marked SUV from rolling. York Const. Andy Pattenden said an investigation by the officer’s road sergeant, which occurs after each crash, found the officer forgot to put his vehicle in park. Const. Pattenden said the motorist did not receive a traffic ticket and there were no injuries or visible damage. - Jeremy Grimaldi

Chris Cristini, Brandon Crump, Sacha Adkins, Laura Hosier, Steve Cristini and Azadeh Boroumand are actively involved in crossfit training. They love putting their athleticism and stamina to the test when a crossfit competition arises. Especially one which will rank the world’s fittest and determine who is the fittest on earth when the 2016 Reebok Crossfit Games take place at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. With the competition slated to take place from July 19 to 24, the sixmember contingent will be among 30 entries vying for the team title as the lone entry from Canada. To qualify, the contingent who coach and train at Crossfit Markham and Reebok Crossfit East Woodbridge, began their quest in earnest last summer. It was during The Granite Games in St. Cloud, Minn., when Chris, 32, Brandon, 27, Sacha, 30, and Laura, 29, comprised a foursome that won the team title. They took things further by setting their sights on qualifying for the ultimate event – the Reebok Crossfit Games. Recruiting two more to make a six-member contingent in Steve, 25, and Azadeh, 30, the group began their work in February. Known as the Open, the first stage was a five-week, five-workout competition at CrossFit affiliates and garage gyms around the world. Workouts were released online each Thursday, and athletes had until the following Monday to submit their scores. The top athletes from each of the 17 regions qualified for the second stage of the competition—regionals, a live, three-day event held over three weekends last month. The top athletes from two or three regions combine, and competed for the five spots for the CrossFit Games. Competing at a regional event in Albany, N.Y., the York entry punched earned the fifth and final position. At the championships, which will also see titles up for grabs in men’s and women’s individual, participants go through a series of challenges not known to them beforehand. To make their presence felt, “mental strength, team cohesion and ability to tolerate pain,” are key, Steve said. “The team has been training together for eight months with a gruelling schedule. “The support from the members of Crossfit Markham and Reebok Crossfit East Woodbridge as well as the Canadian community had been phenomenal,” he added.

Jr. A league faces up to need for full visors mhayakawa@yrmg.com

When the Ontario Junior Hockey League held its annual general meeting in Mississauga last weekend, one of the topics was player safety. In particular, facial injuries. In an effort to reduce the number of facial incidents players incur, the league took a step to implement full facial protection starting in the 2017-18 campaign. The OJHL will become the first member league in the Canadian Junior Hockey League to make full facemasks mandatory. To be eliminated are half visors. “Player safety at the junior level is constantly being monitored and reviewed, and is a never-ending process,” OJHL commissioner Marty Savoy said in a media release. “The governors of the OJHL feel their decision to move toward full facial protection is a decision that will improve the overall safety of our most important assets; the players of our league.” Mike Galati, Markham Royals’ general manager, lauded the decision. “Safety has always been a hot topic in every league and we should look at keeping players as safe as they can,” he said. “The safety of the players will be better.” The big question, Galati said, will be how players who were playing in the Ontario Hockey League or other major junior leagues who return to play in the OJHL and will then have to adjust to wearing the full shield. During the AGM a new OJHL board of directors was announced.

Whitby Fury governor Scott McCrory will serve another term as chairman with Markham Royals owner Stuart Hyman serving again as the first vice-chairman and Rob DeVincentis of the Milton Icehawks appointed as second vice-chairman. Ken Burrows, Stouffville Spirit co-owner and general manager, will remain on the board as the North-East Conference director and newlyappointed is Bill Court of the Georgetown Raiders, who will serve as the South-West Conference director. During the upcoming season, the Trenton Golden Hawks will serve as host of the 2017 Dudley-Hewitt Cup, Central Canadian Junior ‘A’ Championship, and the Cobourg Cougars will host the 2017 RBC Cup, National Junior ‘A’ Championship. The Buffalo Jr. Sabres will once again host the OJHL Governors’ Showcase at the HarborCenter from Sept. 26-28. All OJHL member clubs will play two games at the showcase. Galati said the main schedule is to be released by the end of this month. On a separate note, Galati noted the Royals’ prospect camp held earlier in the month at the Angus Glen Community Centre went well. “We had a good number of players on hand and there was a good quality of players there,” he said. From the camp, Galati said they intend to extend around 25 invitations to those who impressed the coaching staff to their main camp. The Royals’ main camp is to be held in mid-August at Markham Centennial arena.

The Runner’s Solution for IF YOU suffer from low back pain and sciatica, you are one of over 2 million adults in Canada with this often crippling spinal condition. Things are even worse for you if you are a regular runner and not just the average person. Because the pain caused by these debilitating conditions can either lay you up, and all you can do is watch your fitness disappear like smoke, or if you can still go for a run the condition will rear it’s ugly head at every possible inconvenient opportunity. Back Pain and Sciatica Can: 3 Cause pain in the hip, groin, buttock, hamstring, knee, calf, ankle and foot 3 Cramps of the buttock, hamstring, calf and foot 3 Predispose you to more frequent pulled muscles and strains 3 Weakness and muscle wasting if allowed to persist 3 Crawling or tingling sensations anywhere between your waist and your toes 3 Numbness anywhere between your waist and your toes Left untreated, the intense pain can rapidly wear you down and drain the joy out of life. That is, until now... Recent advances in the treatment of sciatica and lower back pain have led to the development and huge success of Advanced Bio Structural Correction Technique.

The excellent results of Chiropractic treatment have been published in major medical journals, with great success rates. Some back surgeons and Medical Doctors are recommending their patients try this treatment first before having back surgery. In Markham, you can try Advanced BioStructural Correction at Elite Care Chiropractic – the office of low back pain and sciatica relief Chiropractor Dr. Zunaid Kagdi. Dr. Kagdi and his team of fully trained spinal care staff have helped over 1,000 patients find relief from their agonising back pain and sciatica. According to Dr. Kagdi, “We focus on precisely diagnosing the cause of your low back pain and sciatica; and a programme for reconstructing the damaged area causing the pain; this means long-term results for most people.” Because the treatment is non-surgical, safe and easy, most patients report an almost immediate relief from their pain. Patient Sean M. from Richmond Hill says, “My back pain was unbearable but the worst thing was the searing burning pain I felt in my buttock and leg. I couldn’t work or do anything useful and the drugs my MD prescribed hardly did anything. I am so happy with the results. I no longer live in pain and fear of the future… I only wish I knew about Chiropractic sooner.” Your invitation for a comprehensive consultation and examination to pinpoint the

cause of your low back pain and sciatica... Markham Economist has teamed up with Elite Care Chiropractic, to help runners find relief from their persistent back and sciatic pain. All you have to do to receive a thorough diagnostic examination and a comprehensive easy to understand report on your state of health is call 905-554-8444. Mention this article (CODE: LOWRUN) and Dr. Kagdi will happily reduce his usual consultation fee of $167 to just $27. But hurry, due to obvious reasons – this is a time limited offer. My advice, don't suffer a moment longer... Find out if Advanced Biostructural Correction can help you, book a consultation with Zunaid and his team now by calling 905554-8444, they are waiting to take your call today. They actually treat the cause of your health problem, not just your symptoms. That’s why hundreds of grateful patients tell them “Chiropractic gave me back my life!” Over the years, they’ve treated thousands of patients with back problems and sciatica. The vast majority of them have enjoyed superior, lasting relief. In fact, many who’ve suffered have told them they gave them back their lives! Call them now and get a full and thorough examination to pinpoint the cause of your problem for just $27, the normal cost of such an exam is $167 so you will save $140!

Don’t suffer from the pain and immobility any longer. Discover the natural treatment that may eliminate the cause of your problem and give you the safe, lasting relief you deserve. Call them now on 905-554-8444 and cut out or tear off this valuable article now and take it to your appointment. You’ll be entitled to a comprehensive examination to diagnose the cause of your problem – and you’ll be on your way to safe, lasting relief! Don’t delay your important diagnosis and treatment another moment! You can even call on the weekend and leave a message on their answer machine to secure your spot as they promise to return all calls; and during the week they are very busy, so if they don’t pick up straight away do leave a message. Call 905-554-8444 NOW and leave a message if it’s the weekend or the line is busy they promise they will get back to you as soon as they can. So call now on 905-554-8444 and quote this special discount code: LOWRUN

“One of the things I heard from so many people at the (funeral) service was all the things he did for them.” said Gail. For instance, Al would make trips to pick up bottles of maple syrup that he brought with him on his journeys to watch NASCAR races in the United States. He gave the Canadian delicacy to American buddies in places such as Charlotte and Michigan. Another thing Al liked to do, said Gail, was order 30 or 35 loaves of cherry bread every year from a Port Perry bakery and sausages from an Elmira butcher and give

the food away to friends. “He did a lot of different things that people would tell me about later. He was very generous like that, helping others,” she said. Gail said one of Al’s closest friends tells of the time the pair was in the U.S. south just before the American Thanksgiving when Al asked a waitress what she was doing for the traditional holiday. When she said she wasn’t doing anything, he reached into his wallet and gave her all the money she needed to buy a turkey and all the fixings for a family dinner.

Gail and Al enjoyed travelling, though Al didn’t like the big cities. “He loved towns and villages and just chatting with the local people in the post office,” Gail said. In the 18 months he has been gone, Gail said it has been hard, because, “we always did everything together,” but, “I have to keep it going, otherwise I would go crazy.” She says that, “friends and family have been great and the stories people have told about Al have really helped. “We had such a wonderful life,” she said.

Taekwondo pair kicks it up a notch BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Just call Justina Li and Brian Lam champions. In the martial arts discipline of taekwondo poomsae to be precise. The pair, who train at Stouffville Taekwondo, made their presence felt at the recent 10th National Taekwondo Poomsae championships in Calgary. Li, a 15-year-old Markham resident, claimed top honours in the junior female individual division. A 15-year-old Richmond Hill resident, Lam accomplished the same feat in the junior male division. The pair also combined their talents to lay claim to the junior pairs division championship. The two earned the right to represent Canada at the 10th World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships to be held in Lima, Peru, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 3. Anything less than a win would have been disappointing, said Li, a Grade 10 St. Brother Andre Catholic High School student. Both the young athletes

were quick to credit their Stouffville Taekwondo head instructor Master Bhajan Mann. “I expected to win because my coach always tells me ‘you go there to do your best and win at the same time’. This is a very important mindset to have if someone wants to excel and be successful in competition,” explained Li. “I always try my best in everything I do and my coach has made sure that both my physical and mental states were prepared for this competition. “I went to Nationals trying to beat personal bests and put my new skills and training to the test. I am very happy about winning National and I am honoured to have received the Best Up and Coming Junior Female Poomsae Athlete recognition award. This really tells me that all my hard work has been worthwhile and has paid off.” A Grade 10 student enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program at Bayview Secondary School, Lam added the two titles he returned home with are a

definite confidence booster in his budding martial arts career. “I previously won these two titles back in 2012,” he said. “Being able to repeat this feat proved to me that all my training and commitment had paid off and is steering me in the right direction for further success. “As well, my goal of being able to make the national team in both individual and pairs was achieved, so I couldn’t be happier. I am especially proud that my brother, Eric, competing in the cadet age division, also qualified for the national team for the pairs event.” Working as a tandem since 2011, Li and Lam were quick to point out a vital ingredient with what success they’ve attained in pairs competition stems from the chemistry they’ve developed through the years. “We feed off of each other’s energy and motivation,” added Lam. “We’ve been friends for a long time, so it’s really great to compete alongside someone who I have a profound respect for and feel comfortable with.”

A former Unionville resident will become head coach of the St. Louis Blues when the 2017-18 National Hockey League season commences. Mike Yeo, 42, was named by St. Louis to succeed current head coach Ken Hitchcock, who earlier announced the 2016-17 NHL campaign will be his last in that position. Yeo will first serve as an associate coach under Hitchcock next season. A player in the Unionville Minor Hockey Association in his youth, Yeo last coached in the NHL with the Minnesota Wild before he was relieved of his head coaching duties Feb. 13. Yeo spent one season as coach of Houston of the American Hockey League and led the Aeros to the 2011 Calder Cup Final. He also spent four seasons as an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins, winning the Stanley Cup in 2009. His first six seasons in the organization were spent as an assistant with the Penguins’ AHL affiliate in WilkesBarre/Scranton. Yeo played novice and
