Complaining York Region’s history of being home to traditional family-friendly communities is under threat, politicians and developers will work over the summer to convince Queen’s Park to reduce its ambitious intensification targets. “It (the provincial growth plan) doesn’t seem realistic. It’s as if I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole. They

can’t be saying that. But that is what the request is,” said Don Given, partner with planning consulting firm Malone Given Parsons. “There is something logically wrong here. I think the staff at the province is starting to get it but we need to hear (from regional staff and councillors) that this has to be revisited. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense.” The intensification target will

force future residents into condo towers over family homes, said Eddie Weisz, president of Paradise Developments Corp., based in Markham. “This new (policy) of intensification is really going to choke off our land supply. Housing has become unaffordable. Not everybody wants to live vertical (in buildings), a lot of people want to have a backyard, want to live in

communities,” he said. “There’s a lot of people in this room who live in houses, enjoy living in houses, want to live in houses. your grandkids are going to have a lot more difficult time finding single-family housing because of affordability…I’m really nervous in what’s coming forward and I hope decisions will be made that will allow York Region to develop in an orderly fashion but to continue developing and I’m not sure that is going to happen with these new rules.” Last month, former municipal affairs minister Ted McMeekin announced the province is moving to increase intensification targets so that at least 60 per cent of all new residential development will be built in already established communities. The current target is 40 per cent. More intensification will result in less urban sprawl, more compact and livable communities and will support investments in public transit, McMeekin said. The province has set a Sept. 30 deadline for comments on the growth plan and greenbelt plan, prompting councillors and developers to pledge to use the summer to try to convince the province to rethink its ambitious proposal. “They (provincial officials) are a little bit removed from it because they are operating at 40,000 feet. Sometimes, they have to land on the ground to figure out exactly how these things function,” Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua said, adding the issue will foster important discussions among key players over the next three months. “This action by the province will, obviously, literally alter the landscape of our communities.” Earlier this year, York councillors rejected a pitch from regional planning officials to bump

the intensification target here to 45 per cent, arguing that would go too far in changing the region’s traditional housing landscape. Critics of the province’s plan also argue building fewer traditional “ground-level” housing options will send already soaring housing prices out of the reach of even more residents as demand will far outstrip supply. And while the province has come up with a proposal that sounds good on paper, it has left it up to municipalities to implement a plan that will bring many challenges, said Paula Tenuta, vice-president of policy and government relations with the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD). “It’s clear that the province has left this in the hands of municipalities to figure much of this out. What is needed, perhaps, is an advisory group made up of municipal representatives to show the province if it’s feasible or not,” she said. “For us at BILD, it’s not a low-rise versus high-rise versus mid-rise versus mixed-use conversation. It’s about housing affordability and choice. We feel the proposed amendments may eventually limit that housing choice for the residents of York Region.” East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson said the public has no idea what is being proposed. Vaughan Councillor Mario Ferri agreed. “This will have a fundamental shift and a fundamental change in our communities and I think it’s incumbent on those who are designing this to engage and inform those that are going to be affected,” he said. “Now, there may be great support for this and that’s fine but the fact remains that the public is not aware and is not as informed as I believe they should be.”

After more than a year and about $2 million spent on restoration and re-construction, the Queen’s Hotel on Main Street Unionville is set to re-open. The hotel, built in the 1870s, was damaged during a fire last March. Since then, the owner has been working to preserve the historic building. “This street is recognized because of this building,” said James Hussaini, president of Business Point, a coworking office space company that owns the building. “This building is in every picture. There are a lot of emotions attached to this building.” Preserving the bricks and mortar was the priority, for the business and for himself. “Even I have an emotional attachment to this building,” said Hussaini, who worked in a highrise prior to starting his own business. He remembers a photo on the wall showing the hotel in the late 19th century. “There were no cars,” he said. “There were horses in the photo. That type of history creates an attachment.” The cause of the fire was sourced back to a malfunctioning potlight in the ceiling of a retail store on the

ground floor. “It was a stubborn fire,” said Neelo Ahmadi, vicepresident of Business Point and hotel restoration project manager. “It’s because it was an older building, it went quickly. Thank goodness there were no injuries.” While there was little damage to the exterior, there was extensive smoke and water damage to the interior. The interior of the building is brand new. The restoration process included new electrical, HVAC and plumbing systems as well as extensive fire-proofing measures. “We want to make sure this never happens again,” Ahmadi said. “The good news is it’s all new and the outside is preserved.” With any restoration, there were ups and downs. While the city toed the line when it came to preserving heritage, as it should Hussaini said, he never expected the process to drag on more than a year. At one point, their insurance company wanted to take down part of the exterior wall along Main Street. It took about six months to settle that debate between city and insurer. “We weren’t looking for financial help,” Huassini said. “But we thought because it was a heritage building,

the process would be expedited.” The fire and the restoration process took a toll on several businesses in the building and Business Point lost a few tenants. But the restored building will be home to a couple of boutique retail shops on the ground level and a slew of businesses on the second and third levels including a lawyer, real estate agent, wedding planner and mortgage broker. There was some discussion about transforming the building into an indoor mall with several small retail and boutique shops, while maintaining the historical integrity of the exterior. The mall would have added another attraction to the street, especially during winter, Hussaini said. But after pushback, he kept the original plan – executive office spaces and a business centre. If all stays on track, Business Point will open by the end of the month, just in time for the summer when Main Street is at its busiest. “We’re excited,” Ahmadi said. “We can’t wait to open again. It’s very emotional.” There are still some spaces available. For more information, visit businesspoint.ca

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT UPDATED MPAC ASSESSMENT Markham RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY OWNERS have received an updated property assessment notice from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) that will be used to calculate your property taxes for the years 2017 to 2020. Provincial law requires the City to adjust its tax rates relative to the City-wide average increase, to ensure the City collects the same amount of property taxes as the prior year.

The updated MPAC assessment doesn’t result in additional revenue to the City of Markham

What does this mean to you?

The updated assessment reallocates property taxes within the City by measuring how individual property values have changed, relative to all other properties in the City.

Technology? Meet activity

I

t seems we are the lethargic victims of our over-active technological appetites. This is especially the case when it comes to our sluggish, lackadaisical kids. ParticipACTION — a non-profit national organization that encourages physical activity and overall healthy living — released its latest study last week, and to say the results are alarming, would be a gross understatement. The group’s latest findings are that children are not getting enough sleep because they don’t get enough activity during the day to make them tired. The group also found children spend way too much time staring at computers and mobile device screens — which keeps them indoors, sitting for long periods of time — and away from the movement, fresh air and social interaction their growing bodies and minds so desperately need. The most disturbing discovery is children are sleep deprived, which sets off a downward spiral, making them less active and lazy from the minute they awake. This should set off an alarm clock for adults who care for, nurture and supervise today’s youngsters. We must kick out of bed this disturbing trend where it’s now the norm for children to be sluggish and unmotivated. This is the part where I could preach about how my generation — which grew up in the 1960s and ’70s — was outside playing at the crack of dawn each day; swimming at the beach, popping flies on the baseball field or hanging upside down at the park, only to return hours later for supper and then fall, exhausted, into bed. But I won’t do that. It’s a much different world out there today and, because of that, we have to re-invent how to live in the 21st century. We need to find that balance between our brain’s thirst for technological discovery and our inherent need for physical activity and stimulation. We need to look to educators to take the first crucial steps to reconciling the mess we’ve all created. The good news is, there are emerging clues that we are starting to turn the tide on our over-indulgent, dozing, lazy lifestyles, but it’s coming at a snail’s pace. Communities, for example,

Tracy Kibble are being designed to incorporate more active lifestyles, encouraging families to get out of their vehicles and into the sunshine. And many young parents are starting to head outdoors with their children to promote that balance of physical and intellectual bonding and play. Here’s a few suggestions to keep the momentum going: • Ensure every public school in Ontario has at least one teacher on staff with a degree and/or training in physical education: a majority of teachers don’t have the slightest idea how to get children moving and have little knowledge about the science of how young bodies work and flourish. • Make physical and health education part of our school curriculum from Grade 1, so that children learn to appreciate and value, at a very young age, how energy, team-building sports and rampedup metabolisms make for sharper minds and better night’s sleeps. • Make physical education a three-credit course in high school. As it is now, only one credit is required and, after that, most students, especially girls, never see a gym class for the next three years. • Finally, and this is the most important suggestion: parents must limit screen time to no more than a few hours each day. Studies show only 24 per cent of five to 17-year-olds meet the Canadian Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines recommendation of no more than two hours of recreational screen time per day, according to a Canadian Health Measures 2012 survey. How many more studies need there be, before leaders stand up and make the responsible and necessary changes to save an entire generation from myriad health problems, such as sleep deprivation, diabetes and hyper-tension, to name a few? There’s been enough talk. It’s time to wake up.

I have had the pleasure of living in Unionville and attending the Unionville Festival for the past 30 years. It is a huge draw to Unionville and people drive from all over Toronto and the GTA. On the Saturday of the festival, I was walking along Carlton Road and witnessed some rather surprising behavior by two City of Markham employees. They were ticketing cars parked along Carlton Road in front of Toogood Pond. Shame on you, City of Markham! I’m all for following the “posted signs”, which did state no parking. However, in this instance

Carlton Road was closed and the only traffic going through was to get to the festival itself. I’m ashamed at the money grab from the city on what was supposed to be a community event. Someone from the City of Markham instructed those employees to ticket those cars on THAT day at THAT time. Exceptions can always be made when common sense prevails. Recently, the festival has had issues with raising money and has been unable to provide the fireworks on Saturday evening and most recently, was unable to have the family treasure hunt this year. Maybe the city can give the money they made off the parking tickets to help fund those events at next

LANK STEAKS

It is now 5 years since we moved from our old digs to the new, and we're going to celebrate this weekend. Firstly, it's hard for us to believe that 5 full years have passed since 'the move', but they have. We have grown, our business has grown, we've made many new friends, and somehow manage to stay friends with those who have resituated from the area, but find that this (and their hairdresser) is what they miss most from their time here. Cathy and I are in our 31st year of business, and while there is lots of just plain hard work, the number of friends and acquaintances that we've made along the way is the truly enduring reward for what we do, and we'd like to take this opportunity to express that sentiment. We've taken a year off from our radio ads, so they won't be here for the festivities, but we'll have our lunch time 'Hockey with Heart' B.B.Q. on Saturday as usual, a number of folk in the store sampling and demonstrating, and quite a few of my personal faves featured this week.

This is an item that goes back a long way with us, and the whole area for that matter. There are not many who haven’t tried these, and thoroughly enjoyed them. They are well-trimmed, scored, then marinated in a soya-based mixture that my motherin-law Doreen originated back early in our original store. When we started out, flank steak was not a popular cut of meat, and it was fairly inexpensive. We have watched as it has climbed in price over the years, but it still represents pretty good value compared with other steaks that can be bought. Follow the directions on the OFF bag; life…… and dinner, will be good! Reg. $12.95-lb, featured at

The annual Taste of Asia returns this weekend with food, culture and entertainment on Kennedy Road, just north of Steeles Avenue.

East meets West at this weekend’s Taste of Asia Fest By Amanda Persico

apersico@yrmg.com

The annual Taste of Asia food festival is a mouthwatering showcase of the best Asian cuisine. This weekend is the 14th annual food festival, hosted by the Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham, the City of Markham and the Association of Progressive Muslims together with the Canadian Federation of Intercultural Friendship. This year’s theme is East Meets West, in celebration of multiculturalism and diversity, and fusion is the name of the game when it comes to food, festival event co-ordinator Juliana Liu said. “There are so many new and inventive foods,” she said. “People always come for the food.” There will be more than 150 vendors at the festival, 115 food vendors. One fusion style food is the combination of a traditional Chinese bubble waffle with ice cream. The unique bubbled-texture egg waffle has a crispy golden outside with light, airy pockets or bubbles and is often eaten plain. Also new this year is liquid nitrogen popcorn. “Smoke comes out of your mouth when you eat it,” Liu said. “It’s safe, but really.” Fan favourite stinky tofu is still on the menu. “You either love it or hate it,” she said of the fermented tofu dish. Stinky tofu is a traditional and popular Asian street food that is either deep-fried or barbecued and depending on the region is served with pickled vegetables, chili or a sweet sauce. “Some say, it’s like frying blue cheese.” The East Meets West theme will showcase Aboriginal culture, including teepees, art displays, traditional drum dance and a powwow performance to open the festival’s Saturday night lineup. There will also be Aboriginal chefs cooking some time-honoured Native Canadian dishes. Other festival attractions include musical performances from several Hong Kong celebrities, Chinese martial arts demonstrations and Tai dance groups. The annual food festival takes over the Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue area, June 25, 11 a.m. to midnight and June 26, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, visit taste-of-asia.ca

This is a delicious treat for Al Fresco summer dining. It has a subtle yet rich long flavour that really goes well with a glass of white wine. For the past 20 years, the Flato Markham Theatre has provided youth with a chance to experience the performing arts first-hand through its summer camp program. This year, the theatre is expanding its programming by adding eight new camp sessions at a satellite location – Cornerstone Church, 9680 Ninth Line. “The camp is so popular it sells out in a matter of hours,” said camp co-ordinator Ashley Van Eysinga. Last year, more than 600 children and youth participated in the Discovery Camp held at the Flato Markham Theatre. With the addition of the Performing Arts Camp (PAC) at Cornerstone Church, the theatre expects to see more than 1,000 campers through the program. Each camp offers a different experience. While Discovery camp focuses on an entire production, PAC is more hands-on skills training and development, said camp artistic director Libby Avalos. “PAC is where we develop skills,” she said. “They come here to build skills and come to the theatre to do a performance.” PAC is a series of one-week camps, where each week features a different guest artist who will showcase and teach a special skill, such as improv, musical theatre or dance. “Through PAC, we want to help build a child’s bag of performing arts tricks,” said

Van Eysinga. “Every week there is something different.” PAC will also expose children to several cultural performances, including traditional Chinese and Bollywood dancing techniques. Discovery camp is a two-week camp where the children and youth put on a full musical theatre performance at the Flato Markham Theatre end of the two-week period. The camp is in tune with the theatre’s every child philosophy, said Avalos who rewrites famous plays to ensure every child has lines during the performance. Camp performances are open to the public and run every other Thursday throughout July and August. “It’s empowering for them,” she said. “And it’s not lines just to say they had lines. Each child plays a character.” The younger, junior campers who might find themselves on stage for the first time have about two lines to start. The number of lines and complexity of characters increases with age and experience of the campers. Those in the high camp levels are given the opportunity to write, direct and act out a scene. “We don’t give them more than they can handle,” she said. “We want them to be successful not overwhelmed.” Both camps start the first week of July. has been good news for the manufacturing industry. Increased demand for Canadian exports is a big reason the manufacturingdurables sector is expecting the largest quarterly employment growth of any sector for Q3 (the third quarter).” Public administration is also expected to see strong growth, according to the survey. Overall, the survey of 1,900 employers across Canada revealed 16 per cent plan to hire workers from July to September, while 5 per cent expect cutbacks. About 78 per cent expect their staffing levels to remain the same, while 1 per cent were unsure about their hiring intentions.

The Regional Municipality of York is beginning a transportationEnvironmental Assessment Study (EA Study) of a proposed road crossing of Highway 404 between Major Mackenzie Drive and Elgin Mills Road in the Town of Richmond Hill and the City of Markham.

York Region should expect a mild hiring climate for the third quarter of 2016, according to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook survey. Ten per cent of employers are looking to hit new staff between July and September and none plan to cut employees, says Maple Kyriacou of Manpower’s York office. The vast majority — 90 per cent — plan to maintain current staffing levels. Nationally, employment gains are expected to be modest in the third quarter, Darlene Minatel, vice-president of Manpower Canada’s operations and strategic accounts. “However, we are seeing some bright spots,” she said. “The dollar’s prolonged low

Main Street Unionville is a happening place, alive with music, residents and out-oftowners strolling along to restaurants, galleries and shops. But at the back of one establishment is a sign, “Bubble Spa Massage” with a phone number. According to several webpages, Bubble Spa at 147A Main St., is listed as an erotic massage parlour – a body rub parlour. Calls to phone numbers associated with Bubble Spa went directly to an uninitiated voicemail. For many in the community, it’s about the signs and about Unionville’s image. “We want that sign gone,” resident Shanta Sundarason said. “That is not what Unionville is known for.” On one Kijiji page, Bubble Spa is listed as an inexpensive relaxing massage featuring Asian and Japanese models, luxury rooms and shower. Another page depicts scantily-clad women and allows spa patrons to “pick ur (sic) beautiful girl” and offers “5-star service”. “I was horrified when I saw this,” Sundarason said. “This can’t be real. At the front, it looks like a normal reception. But the website says a different story.” Sundarason took the issue to the city’s bylaw department. The city said earlier this week it “is aware of this business and the matter is under investigation.” Legal proceedings against the business owner have since been initiated and the signs have been removed from the premises, the city’s director of corporate communications, Dennis Flaherty, stated in an email to the Economist & Sun on Wednesday. Bubble Spa is one of about 55 massage parlours in Markham listed on an online directory dedicated to erotic massage parlours. The directory lists about

However, the newer bylaws do not outlaw these types of businesses outright.

Inconsistencies between bylaw definitions and zoning are part of the review.

Bubble Spa Massage on Main Street Unionville has caught the attention of some residents for the wrong reasons. Residents say it does not belong in the neighbourhood. 50 massage parlours in Richmond Hill, 40 in Vaughan, 20 in Woodbridge and 10 in the Newmarket/Aurora area. According to the directory, Bubble Spa, which used to operate in the same location under the name Cozy Loft, opened in 2014. A few years ago, the city hosted a design charrette to help boost and build a vision for Main Street. “We have to get rid of places like this,” said Sundarason, who is a member of the Unionville visionary committee recently established to follow through on the design vision from the charrette. “This sort of activity is not welcome here. We will make it known to all business operators that we will not ever tolerate such activities in our village.” There is a process, said city councillor Don Hamilton. “Ridding our village of any undesirable activity is no longer a matter of ‘coming in with guns ablazing’ like the days of the old west,” Hamilton said. “There are legal processes and protocols that must be followed if the city is to be successful. Residents need to be mindful and respectful of that.” The city is undertaking a comprehensive bylaw review, which includes bylaws and zoning for issues related to adult entertainment uses.

According to a draft consultants’ report, Markham’s current bylaws define body rub as “includes the kneading, manipulating, rubbing, massaging, touching or stimulating by any means of a person’s body or part thereof, but does not include medical or therapeutic treatment given by a person otherwise duly qualified, licensed or registered to do so under the laws of the Province of Ontario.” Adult entertainment parlours – “services appealing to or designed to appeal to erotic or sexual appetites or inclinations, which services include activities, facilities, performances, exhibitions, viewings and encounters,” – are prohibited in any nightclub, place of entertainment, recreational establishment or theatre. Body rub parlours cannot be within 500 metres of any residential zone, school, place of worship or child day care centre, one kilometre from another body rub parlour and the city can only license 10 body rub establishments. An adult entertainment parlour cannot be within 120 metres of those same places. There are many areas where adult entertainment parlours are neither explicitly permitted nor prohibited. There are several areas where adult entertainment

York Regional Police feted for social media campaign

The Markham Economist & Sun | Thursday, June 23, 2016 |

Did you know this is household hazardous waste?

When it comes to altering habits around impaired driving, communication is key. After all, it was the drunk driving campaigns of the 1990s and early 2000s that saw the numbers of those caught impaired behind the wheel plummet. But in the last few years, York Region has seen those numbers rise again – by an eye-popping 45 per cent between 2013 and 2015. That’s what makes the #Imthatperson campaign by the York Regional Police all the more impactful. Rolled out at Newmarket’s Sacred Heart Catholic High School in November 2015, the social media-based effort encouraged young and old to be “that person” to take an impaired individual’s keys, to call a taxi for those who shouldn’t get behind the wheel and to alert 911 when they see an impaired driver

on the road. “We were sitting around the table thinking, ‘Why do we do what we do?’” Sgt. Karen Hodge said. “Each of us have our own story (about impaired driving) that brought us here. It’s about being that person who is willing to take that stand, so there will be no regrets, no tragedies at the end of the day.” The effort paid off June 16 when the York Regional Police traffic bureau was handed the Traffic Initiative of the Year award by the Ministry of Transportation. “The campaign focused on shifting the mindset that impaired driving is not just the responsibility of law enforcement — that we all play very important roles in creating safer roads,” Sgt. Kelly Bachoo said. The award is a boon to a force that has struggled over the past year, in particular, with the effects of drunk

driving. Although the number of arrests have been rising since 2013, they’ve ballooned over the past year, despite the death of four members of the Neville-Lake family in Vaughan. “Personally, feeling the tragedy that night and being with the family through the court proceedings and feeling the effects impaired driving has on people’s lives, you begin to wonder what don’t these people get?” questioned Const. Andy Pattenden. “I don’t think people are putting themselves in that position, they must never think that they will kill a family, be caught by RIDE or stopped by an officer.” Figures show 2016, which has seen 674 people nabbed for drinking and driving so far, is shaping up to be one of the worst years. In 2015, police nabbed 1,255 people.

West Nile virus Spoil a mosquito’s dinner plans

Fight the bite…

What is West Nile virus?

West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne virus that is spread to humans from the bite of an infected mosquito.

What are the symptoms of West Nile virus?

Most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms or have flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches and fatigue. Sometimes West Nile virus can cause severe illness including meningitis and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Symptoms usually develop within two to 15 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Who is at risk for West Nile virus?

Everyone who is outside during the summer months is at risk for West Nile virus and should take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. People with a chronic illness and the elderly should be especially careful.

What York Region is doing…

The York Region West Nile virus Control Plan for 2016 includes mosquito-control activities (larviciding), public education, and mosquito and human surveillance.

What is larviciding?

Larviciding is a low-risk and effective measure for the control of West Nile virus. The slow-release pellet formulation interferes with the mosquito lifecycle, preventing the mosquito larvae from reaching maturity. Larvicide is not sprayed and will be applied into the standing water of catch basins in four phases from June through September.

Will York Region apply larvicide on private property?

If you are concerned about catch basins on your property, place a mesh screen over the catch basin to prevent mosquitoes from entering and exiting. A limited number of backyard catch basins located on private property will be treated with larvicide on a case-by-case basis.

What you can do…

Prevention and protection are the best ways to protect yourself and your family from West Nile virus.

Clean up

The best way to keep mosquitoes away is to clean up areas of standing water where they like to breed. Look around your house and property and get rid of places that are “mosquito friendly”. • Clean up and empty containers where water collects such as old tires, tin cans and flower pots • Change water in bird baths weekly • Remove water that collects on pool covers • Turn over items such as wading pools, wheelbarrows and small boats • Clear leaves and twigs from eavestroughs, storm and roof gutters • Unclog drainage ditches so that water flows freely • Make sure swimming pool pumps are circulating water • Clear out dense shrubbery where mosquitoes like to rest • Turn over compost frequently • Check that door and window screens are tight-fitting and in good repair • Drill holes in the bottoms of containers so water cannot collect

Cover up

Mosquitoes are most active between dusk and dawn. Protect yourself and your family • Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants • Consider using federally-registered insect repellents on exposed skin, such as those containing DEET • Always follow product instructions • The concentration of DEET should be no greater than 30 per cent for adults and no greater than 10 per cent for children • DEET-based repellents can also be used on top of clothing. Do not use repellents under clothing • Several DEET-free botanical repellents are federally registered but provide a shorter time of effectiveness

York Region Public Health does not recommend the use of bat boxes as an effective method of mosquito control due to the risk of rabies. In previous summers, some bats in York Region have tested positive for rabies.

Social media divided as female driver punched after honking BY JEREMY GRIMALDI

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

A social media debate is raging on Facebook after a woman told police she was punched in the face after honking at an elderly man as he crossed the street. The messages in favour of the man and the driver began to appear after police sought the public’s help identifying him. The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on May 31 when a woman was stopped at a red light on Cordoba Drive/Bathurst Street. Police said a man was seen crossing the intersection and as the light turned green, the man was still walking across the intersection. The woman in the vehicle honked her horn and the man allegedly hit her in the face. Once she stepped out, police said she was assaulted again. In reply to the details one account, registered to Andrew Schuch, suggested the man not only had the right of way, but the driver was being rude in honking. “Talk about road rage. She shouldn’t have honked at him since he still has the right of way right,” he questioned. “Even if it was green for her she still has to wait. Hope someone honks at her when she’s crossing the street somewhere.” Another account registered to Kathy Bishop suggest that honking at a pedestrian crossing the road was out of order to begin with.

York police are trying to identify man, captured on a motorist’s dash-cam, following an alleged assault in Vaughan on May 31. “I’m sorry she was injured, but honking at a pedestrian crossing the road is just rude,” she wrote. Others maintained the man was at fault for responding with violence regardless of her behaviour. “Folks...let’s not lose sight of what the real issue is here,” wrote an account registered to Helen Roukas Stamatopoulos. “It’s not about her honking her horn (whether in the right or wrong). It’s about the vicious attack that followed. Let’s cooperate with the police in helping to find this man to prevent a similar incident.” Police have said the victim was not injured and declined medical attention.

The Toronto Zoo and Parks Canada reintroduced another cohort of 36 baby Blanding’s turtles to a wetland this past week that will be part of Rouge National Urban Park in the Greater Toronto Area – Canada’s first national urban park. This is the third year Blanding’s turtles – a provincially and nationally threatened species – have been released in the park. In June 2015, the same group of partners collaborated on the release of 21 baby Blanding’s turtles in the Rouge. Another 10 baby turtles were released in 2014. The long-lived species, with a life span of up to 80 years, has inhabited the Rouge Valley for thousands of years, though prior to 2014 its future was uncertain, with as few as six Blanding’s turtles remaining.

Blanding’s turtles are an important indicator species for wetland health and Parks Canada is strongly committed to re-establishing a healthy local population in Rouge National Urban Park. The turtle eggs were collected from a stable source population in southern Ontario in 2014 and have been raised in a controlled environment at the zoo over the last two years. The University of Toronto Scarborough joined this head starting project and is assisting with long-term monitoring of the turtles. The public can help protect Blanding’s turtles by avoiding their nesting areas and by contacting authorities if they observe harmful behavior toward turtles or their habitat. To report turtle poaching, please contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

THE TOOTH SHOPPE DENTURE CLINIC

Denturist Fernando Crupi, founder of The Tooth Shoppe Denture Clinic in Markham, says; “If your denture is more than five years old it may need replacing. A lot of people think dentures will last 20 years but, on average, they are being replaced every five years or so. “Everyone is different – I’ve seen some that are 10 years old and look almost as good as new and, of course, I’ve also seen the reverse.” As we age, our mouth changes, gums shrink and bone recedes. When it comes to replacing dentures, people are understandably worried about making the transition. They’re worried new dentures may not be comfortable and they’re also

concerned about their appearance. New dentures will be designed and made taking into consideration the shape and contours of your face and mouth; the shade, shape, colour and size of the new teeth that are now suitable to your face, mouth and age. Your bite will be realigned to enable and ease eating and chewing, restoring the relationship between jaw and face. New dentures have the effect of making you look as good as possible, improving your self-esteem and confidence. “The best way to know if you need replacement dentures is to come in for a free, no-obligation exam,” says Fernando. The Tooth Shoppe Denture Clinic is located at 5990 16th Avenue, Unit 212. Call 905-471-3381 for an appointment.

UNIONVILLE SKATING CLUB PROUDLY RECOGNIZES THE OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE FOLLOWING SKATERS

Meaghan Vella

Emma Zukow

Chloë Lauder

Melissa Hardy

In July 2015 Meaghan achieved Triple Gold status in Dance, Skills and Interpretive Skating. Meaghan skated at the Unionville Skating Club from 2006 – 2015.

Emma hit the ice at the age of 3 and joined the Unionville Skating Club USC two years later.

Chloë’s passion for skating began 10 years ago as a child skating on Toogood Pond. She later joined the Unionville Skating Club where she has skated since. Throughout her years at USC she has competed in both singles and Synchronized skating, advancing through the Skate Canada test stream to achieve Gold in Skills, Interpretive and Dance.

Skating with the Unionville Skating Club (USC) since the age of 3, Melissa recently attained her Triple Gold status in Dance, Skills, and Interpretive skating. This would not have been possible without the support and training from her coaches Sandra Osbaldeston and Danny Sorley.

She has had wonderful support from coaches Beth Tapscott, Danny Sorley, Judy Chantler, Vanessa Crone, and her Synchro coaches Wendy Schultz, Tracey Jones, Kathy Stevens and Stephanie Klein.

Melissa’s fondest memories of USC are the many highly successful years on the Sparkling Ice Synchronized Skating teams (Beginners through to Novice). Melissa also had the opportunity to skate for the Leaside Meraki Novice Synchronized Skating team for 2 years.

She has participated in 5 Ice Fantasia Shows, performing as Mickey Mouse in her feature was a great highlight! She was active in Synchronized Skating as a member of Unionville’s Sparkling Ice and Momentum teams between 2007 and 2015. Meaghan enjoyed the many competitions she attended, and was extremely proud to represent USC at the Synchronized Skating Nationals in both British Columba (2014) and Quebec City (2015). Meaghan achieved her many accomplishments with the support and excellent coaching from her coaches, Wendy Clevely-Schultz, Danny Sorley, Tracey Jones, Judy Chantler, and Kathy Stevens. She’d like to thank them all for their dedication and encouragement throughout her skating career at USC. Off ice, Meaghan is a graduate of St. Brother Andre School as an Ontario Scholar in 2015, and is currently studying Engineering at University of Toronto. Congratulations Meaghan! Through hard work and persistence you were able to achieve your goal of attaining Triple Gold!! Thanks for the memories USC!

She could be seen at Crosby wearing her mom’s old skating sweater that shared both their badges. From the ballerina tutu, Marilyn Monroe dazzled in Diamonds, Tango, and Black Swan, Emma always enjoyed embellishing her dresses in feathers, flowers, and crystals. Coached by both Sandy Osbaldeston and Danny Sorley, she achieved triple gold in skills, interpretive and dance and also completed her gold free-skate elements. Off the ice, Emma received the Top Academic and Female Athlete Award from UPS. She is currently in grade 9 attending BCSS where she is also passionate about volleyball achieving 2nd at Nationals and Provincials, and 3rd at OFSSA. Emma would like to thank her coaches and parents for supporting her achievements.

She began her Synchro career on Sparkling Ice at USC, moving onward to Momentum, and most recently at the Junior level with Leaside/Meraki. Her Synchro travels have taken her to various destinations across Canada as well as the U.S., making amazing friendships along the way. Chloë has been an honour student throughout her high school years at Bill Crothers Secondary School, while balancing sports and academics. She also plays soccer, field hockey, swims and is a skating instructor with the city of Markham. She loves cottage time and travelling. In the fall she will begin a new chapter of her life studying at the University of Toronto.

Melissa would like to thank all the skaters who have been there for her over the years, many of whom remain close friends. Melissa is currently an Honours student in Grade 12 at St. Augustine CHS, and has been accepted into the Environmental Engineering COOP Program at the University of Guelph which begins this September.

New name, logo, focus for longtime Thornhill golf club BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

The Thornhill Golf and Country Club is changing. Not just on its premises, where they host a classic 18-hole championship course that will play host to the Golf Ontario men’s amateur championships later this year, along with a nine-hole par-three facility, a curling facility, a recently opened fitness centre

and yoga studio, three renovated clay tennis courts and a soon-to-be-opened outdoor swimming pool. But also in name — as it is now officially called the Thornhill Club. In incorporating a name change, the club also unveiled a new logo recently. The decision to change the name stemmed largely from the club’s evolving commitment to making their year-round,

multi-purpose facility family oriented, said Joe Murphy, Thornhill Club general manager and chief operating officer. “For close to 100 years we have been home to a wonderfully designed Stanley Thompson golf course with an 18-hole championship course and a family-friendly nine-hole course that has been the heart and soul of this club,” said Murphy, who began his duties at the Thornhill Club in March. “As we move forward, golf will always be our core value, but we are much, much more than a top-100 golf course in Canada and we want people to know about the other great programs and initiatives that we offer.” Stating the membership enthusiastically

supported the name change, Murphy noted the new logo continues to highlight the fourseason uniqueness of the club with its snowflake and shining sun. It also incorporates a more stylish look. In making changes to their facilities and their marketing plans, Murphy hopes it will create more awareness and attract new members in a highly competitive marketplace. “The Thornhill Club is changing. It’s a club with everything for today’s avid golfer, their families, their active lifestyles and we’re striving to create a warm, friendly environment where everyone enjoys their time here,” Murphy said.

June Festivals:

When Middlefield Collegiate opened its doors in September 1992, Cindy Seligman was the school’s first department head of health and physical education. To this day, she remains a fixture in that position at the Markham school. In directing the school’s health and physical education program through those years, Seligman’s accomplishments were recently honoured during the recent York Region Athletic Association’s coaches dinner and awards ceremony. As a part of those festivities, she was named the recipient of the Pete Beach Award, an honour handed out by the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations to the provincial school district regions. Named after a former OFSAA executive director who passed away in 1989, the Pete Beach Award is given to a teacher who shared his same values in dedicating their life to sport and helping others, especially young people to achieve their full potential. Under Beach’s leadership, OFSAA expanded to 15 associations from seven and included 580 schools from 300. Attending the coaches year-end reception each year as a means to celebrate the success of the YRAA student athletes and coaches who dedicate their time, Seligman acknowledged she was caught totally by surprise after hearing her name called out as the latest Pete Beach Award winner. In fact, she became rather emotional upon accepting

York Region District School Board co-ordinating superintendent Cecil Roach (from left), with Norm Menczel Award winner Liana Williams of Milliken Mills High, Pete Beach Award winner Cindy Seligman of Middlefield Collegiate and board director of education J. Phlilip Parapally. this year’s honour. “I truly am thrilled and have felt that all of my years of working with students in a coaching capacity have been so rewarding and have provided the true experience of what teaching is all about,” she said. “Life beyond the classroom for students participating on teams develops a well-rounded person and I’m just so happy to have been a part of this for so many students over the years.” Sporting a portfolio that saw her coach Middlefield’s boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams, gymnastics, soccer and track and field entries, Seligman also convened gymnastics when it was originally known as the Durham York Secondary Schools Athletic Association before becoming the YRAA and served as the subject head of health and physical education for the York Region

District School Board and as an Athletic Designate. What ranks right up there among what she’s achieved during her teaching tenure though was in instituting their indoor rock climbing program some 20 years ago. What began at Middlefield Collegiate eventually spread to other schools in the YRAA in which they created similar programs. Earning a demonstration sport status in the YRAA in 1997, indoor rock climbing eventually became an official sport just two years later. While Seligman is proud of what she’s accomplished in her teaching career that included seven prior years at Unionville High School, Middlefield Collegiate remains a special place to her. “I will leave upon my retirement as it is the most incredible place to teach with so many wonderful students and staff,” she said.

As a part of the YRAA coaches year-end reception, Liana Williams of Milliken Mills High School, was also given recognition in being year’s recipient of the Norm Menczel Award. The award is presented for involvement in coaching in school and community athletics and contributions to school life in memory of a longtime Huron Heights Secondary School teacher. A teacher and coach at Milliken Mills High School for 21 years, Williams was surprised she was considered for the award which was voted on by the YRAA executive after her name was submitted by a fellow

Walsh runner-up at PGA of Canada Markham resident Billy Walsh came up short in his quest to capture the 2016 PGA Championship of Canada sponsored by Mr. Lube and presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf after incurring a loss to Marc-Etienne Bussieres 3and1 in their finals match at the Victoria Golf Club in Victoria, B.C., Thursday. In winning the title, the 29-year-old Bussieres will have his name engraved on the P.D. Ross Trophy. “To be beside names like Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and George Knudson is really something,” he said, adding, “but they’re legends of the game and I’m just trying to get better and keep

teaching cohort. “He (Norm Menzel) was a special man with so much dedication to sport in our schools and in the community. I never entertained the notion of receiving a prestigious award like this and I’m honoured by the consideration from my peers,” she said. ”I’m proud to be able to carry on his legacy of education through sport.” Having coached a number of sports at Milliken Mills including girls’ basketball, soccer, cross country, volleyball, field hockey and track and field that at one time included 2015 Pan Am Games 100-metre and 200m gold medallist and 2016 Olympic hopeful

Andre De Grasse, Williams also held several positions with the YRAA over the last 14 years. Currently the YRAA girls’ Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations representative, she has also taken on the positions as YRAA president, vice-president, past president on two different occasions and secretary. Within the Milliken Mills High School community, Williams found the time to be the lead teacher in their Healthy

winning trophies.” Past champions of the PGA Championship of Canada included Moe Norman, George Knudson, Al Balding, Bob Panasik, Wilf Homenuik, Stan Leonard, Lee Trevino and Arnold Palmer. Bussieres admitted two things after his win: he hasn’t been playing a bunch of golf this year and he felt some nerves during the week. After claiming medalist honours earlier in the week, Bussieres defeated Tubb, Kevin Black, Phil Jonas and Walsh on his path to the championship title. Bussieres not only takes home the trophy and a $15,000 cheque, he also earns 60-ranking points and moves inside the top 10 on the PGA of Canada Player Rankings.

Schools Champion team. During this past academic year, the team comprised of 30 student leaders focused on healthy initiatives that included interactive cooking classes, mental health workshops, intramural activities, de-stress activities and nutritious smoothie days to name a few. The activities, she was quick to point out, were not just geared for the students but staff as well. When Williams is not

engaged in her time at Milliken Mills High School, she’s an avid runner and has been actively involved in the running community where she’s part of the Running Free Team and volunteers with the 5 Peaks Trail Running Series with race day set up and registration. “Running Free and 5 Peaks are amazing communities to be a part of and I truly love the experience,” she said. To be recognized for her contributions at Milliken

Mills High School and within the community, Williams was quick to thank those who she’s been associated with. Through those interactions, she noted there’s a lesson to be learned not just in the classroom but outside as well. “The lessons learned on and off the court seem small in the moment, but it is these lessons that stay with us for life, and they in fact are big,” Williams said.

Ellice Hong recorded her third victory of the season on the Canadian Junior Golf Association tour at the CJGA Ontario Series event at Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington Saturday. Competing in the Junior Girls (U19) Division and playing under hot, humid conditions, the 17-year-old Thornhill resident carded a seven-over 78 to lead all

competitors. “The back nine gave me a run for my money,” laughed Hong in a CJGA press release on her win. “I always enjoy a challenge thought and I am excited for the next one.” Among results posted by other York golfers, Richmond Hill resident Paul Sung, 18, finished second in the Junior Boys (U19) Division. Sung carded an even par 71 and finished two strokes behind winner Sudarshan Yellamaraju, 14, of Mississauga. In the Bantam Boys (U15) Division, Richmond Hill resident Troy Tsai, 12, finished in a tie with Nicholas Lin, 13, of Toronto for top spot through regulation play with a 75. But with the pair competing in a playoff round, Lin won the event while Tsai settled for second place. The Juvenile Girls (U17) Division saw Alexandra Jucan, 15, of Woodbridge take second place. Carding a round of 95, Jucan, 15, was 12 strokes back of winner Maggie Jennings, 15, of Everett.

Good results at CJGA Linkster in Burlington

Three Markham youths made their presence felt on the fairways when the Canadian Junior Golf Association conducted their Ontario Linkster Series event at Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington Saturday. In the Peewee Boys (U13) Division, Kevin Lee took top spot with a seven-over 78. The 11-year-old Lee won by six strokes over Sai Kaja, 11, of Mississauga and Tyler May 12, of Fergus. The Novice Girls (U9) Division saw Angela Wang win the competition. In the nine-hole event, Wang carded a two-over 37 and was seven shots ahead of her nearest rival Lindsay McGrath, 8, of Oakville. In the Novice Boys (U9) competition, Lucas Chi, 8, finished in a tie for second place with Gabriel Yazdani, 7, of London. The pair completed the nine holes at oneunder 34 and were just two strokes behind winner Barron Munday, 8, of Oakville.

Keep your grill in Grade A form all summer A barbecue master is looking for prime performance at all times, no matter whether they fire up the old-faithful every year or splurge on a new topof-the-line grill. Dara Greenberg, the senior merchant for grills at The Home Depot Canada shares her go-to cleaning tips to get the most out of your barbecue all summer long.

Give it a good wipe down

Clean the exterior with soapy water to remove any build up that can occur from sitting outside. Try to do this every couple of weeks to help remove any dust and residue sitting loose on your grill.

Choose your weapon wisely

When cleaning inside, traditional brushes with bristles work well for porcelain enamel-coated grates, whereas grillstone blocks or a warm cloth with soapy water are good for stainless steel grates. Not familiar with grillstone blocks? When you rub these back and forth, the shape of the block will conform to the grates to make access to narrow areas easy.

Turn it up before turning off

Make your clean-up process easy by increasing the heat after cooking. Close the grill and set the control on high for 10 minutes. The extreme temperature will burn off any remaining food items like cheese or chicken and the charred remnants will be easier to remove.

723 SQ. FT. TWO BEDROOM TWO BATH

No one likes a party crasher

Gas pipes are notorious for housing spiders and getting logged with spider webs which can affect the level of gas getting to your burners over time. Once you’ve made sure that the propane tank is turned off, use a pipe cleaner to remove anything that may be stuck. Taking care of your grill will help it to function better and longer so that all your barbecues are masterful.

In a recent survey conducted by Ipsos Reid, the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) asked prospective home buyers in Ontario about the importance of some life-altering decisions. The results revealed that owning a home is as important as saving for retirement (90 per cent), but more important than getting higher education (72 per cent), finding a mate (64 per cent) or having children (63 per cent). “A large majority of Ontarians consistently say that home ownership is important to them,” says Ray Ferris, president of OREA. “What this research shows is that home buyers may not agree on everything, but they do agree on a couple of major longterm financial goals.” With the importance of home ownership firmly established, OREA further asked home buyers what they were doing to prepare for this all-important milestone. Those who are either ‘very’ or ‘somewhat

likely’ to buy a home in the next two years say that the number-one task they are doing is scouring the internet to look at listings of homes for sale (57 per cent). In addition: • One in three have begun to visit open houses. • Three in ten have consulted a Realtor. • Two in ten have already saved five per cent or more of their down payment. • 19 per cent have saved 20 per cent or more of their down payment. • 19 per cent have taken steps to improve their credit score rating. • Only eight per cent have consulted a lender. “These are all very important steps in the home buying process,” says Ferris. “If you’ve checked off all, or most of these tasks, I’d say you’re in pretty good shape.” — www.newscanada.com
