Marco Muzzo was sentenced to 10 years in prison for wiping out an entire generation of the NevilleLake family, but if such sentences don’t help reduce drinking and driving numbers, then what is the point? This is the conversation that many members of Canada’s judicial community are having in the wake of the sentence Muzzo received Tuesday. Although this is the longest sentence handed down to an impaired driver without a history of offences in Ontario, police and lawyers are wondering what needs to change outside the courtroom to make a dent in the numbers. The reality is, the numbers make for ugly reading. From 2013 to 2015, the number of drunk drivers caught, rose 43 per cent, from 795 to 1,140, according to York Regional Police. More recently, just as Muzzo’s sentence was being handed down Tuesday, York police reported a “disappointing” long weekend of impaired driving on our roads. Thirteen drivers were arrested

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com
and charged with alcohol and drugrelated criminal offences between March 24 at 11 p.m. and March 28 at 1:40 a.m. Criminal defence lawyer Ari Goldkind, who often works in York Region, said Muzzo is not his main concern. He’d rather focus on the countless drunk drivers who walk into Newmarket courthouse daily
Jennifer Neville-Lake was overcome with emotion, following Tuesday’s sentencing of Marco Muzzo, while showing media a picture of two of her children holding hands before they died.
before having their “wrists slapped” with a $1,000 fine and a one-year driving ban. “What happened to Marco Muzzo was the equivalent of a public lynching,” he said. “We all point our fingers at Marco Muzzo as if he woke up in bed and decided to go out to be Paul Bernardo. But, in reality, the only difference between him
and another drunk driver is he had the misfortune of ploughing into the beautiful Neville-Lake family.” He said rather than engage in a public show court, like he contends occurred with Muzzo in the media and on “anti-social media”, the public need to shame the “10,000 other drunk drivers” in our court system. To do this, Goldkind says two things need to happen. The first is that the government needs to lower the drinking level from 0.8 per cent blood alcohol level, which drivers are currently allowed in their systems, to zero. Goldkind is not the only one who thinks this is the obvious next step for the provincial government. York police Const. Andy Pattenden said removing the decision about whether to have “one or two” drinks before getting behind the wheel would go a long way toward lowering drinking and driving numbers. “As it stands, the law gives some people the ability to have some, but others too much.” Const. Pattenden said the system we currently have is often left up to doubt, relying on citizens to decide whether they have had too much to drink.
But the reality is, there are so many factors that go into deciding — including whether someone has eaten, is hydrated, their weight and height – it’s difficult for anyone to do so, he said. If hearing and watching the details of Jennifer Neville-Lake’s story doesn’t stop people from drinking and driving, which it clearly hasn’t, in York Region at least, then what will?, he added. The second suggestion by Goldkind is to threaten each and every impaired driver with incarceration. “The message is not getting through and police don’t have the resources,” he said. “As crude an instrument as jail is, I would say prison is on the table until behaviour changes.” Muzzo is expected to spend upwards of three years behind bars when time served and parole are factored in to the sentence. Muzzo, who pleaded guilty last month, is also banned from driving for 12 years after his time in custody. The collision killed Daniel Neville-Lake, 9, his brother Harrison, 5, their sister Milly, 2, and their grandfather, Gary Neville, 65.
Marco Muzzo receives 10 years for role in Vaughan crash By Jeremy Grimaldi
jgrimaldi@yrmg.com
Marco Muzzo’s 10-year prison sentence was due, in part, to previous driving convictions and a seemingly “irresponsible” attitude toward the “privilege” of driving, court heard Tuesday morning. Muzzo stood looking straight ahead as Justice Michelle Fuerst read out her judgment. “I am acutely aware the NevilleLake and Frias families will...continue to serve the form of life sentence that Mr. Muzzo inflicted on them by his decision to drink and drive,” she told the court before advising him of his sentence, minus eight months for time served. Jennifer Neville-Lake and her husband, Edward Lake, who were holding hands throughout the trial,
removed their glasses and cried and Mr. Muzzo’s mother, Dawn Muzzo, looked straight ahead without emotion as the verdict was read. After the trial, Jennifer stood in front of reporters and showed them a collage displaying pictures, including one of two of her children holding hands before they died. She also said she has been hearing people have contacted the media in hopes of selling pictures of her deceased children and asked the assembled hordes not to buy them. “The sentence was 10 years,” she said. “None of my children saw 10 years.” Prior to delivering the sentence, Fuerst told the court just how ill-equipped it is to deliver reparations to victims of a tragedy
such as this. “While the criminal justice system can deter and denounce, it is ill-suited to make reparations for harm of the magnitude involved in this case,” she said. Muzzo, who pled guilty last month, is also banned from driving for 12 years after his time in custody. After the decision, Crown attorney Paul Tait said he found the decision “eminently fair” and said this is the highest sentence for any drunk driver without a previous record in the criminal justice system. Defence attorney Brian Greenspan said his client has displayed his remorse about his actions from the beginning.

Markham blooms with excitement
Living the Legacy The Markham Pan Am Centre is still blooming with excitement and activity. On March 30 we celebrated a Pan Am inspired public art display with special appearances from our Markham Pan Am athletes Michelle Li and Rachel Honderich. April 8-10, the Pan Am centre will also be hosting the prestigious table tennis qualifying event for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro summer Olympic Games – it’s sure to be an exciting event. Bringing nature indoors Our most recent installation, Cloud flower: Reflecting Community is Markham’s first indoor work of public art. It was designed to reflect our community and the activities on each floor at Cornell Community Centre and Library. On the lower floor, near the gymnasium and aquatic centre, the dynamic garden reflects activity; on the upper floor, near the Older Adult and Youth Centres, and our unique Multi-Sensory Room, a calm and distant cloudscape encourages a relaxed and thoughtful mind. Frank Scarpitti Together, the murals represent the positive life and spirit found in Cornell Community Centre and Library, and the surrounding community. I encourage everyone to visit this inspiring indoor art display. Markham 2020: What’s NEXT? Our Markham 2020 economic strategy was launched in 2008, and since then we have seen significant economic prosperity in the life science, financial services and information communications technology business sectors. We are now updating this strategy to ensure continued prosperity for future generations. Public meetings on an updated strategy began in October last year to share our progress, and receive input for an updated plan. Community engagement activities will continue on April 6 with a special evening event at Flato Markham Theatre. I invite everyone to join me, Council members and some of the region’s finest innovators and thought leaders at this free event to hear about Markham’s vibrant economic future. Register at markham.ca/markham2020 and kick off spring on a high note. Our guest speakers are: • York University President Mamdouh Shoukri • TD Bank Deputy Chief Economist Derek Burleton • Seneca College President David Agnew • Former Scotiabank Chief Economist Warren Jestin Markham’s Strategic Plan – BMFT Community Meeting On April 25 we are hosting a community meeting to review the City’s 2015 accomplishments and a short discussion will take place regarding our plans for the future. This event will be held at the Markham’s Civic Centre – visit Markham.ca for event details! Frank Scarpitti is mayor of the City of Markham

ome writers might not think it auspicious that a new book be published on April Fool’s Day, but five writers from York Region are thrilled their book, As The Ink Flows, will be a reality on April 1. The aim of the book is to “inspire writers” according to one of the five, Melony Teague of Oak Ridges. “It is a rare thing to have writers work together on a project in such harmony,” noted Teague, who has also written columns for York Region Media newspapers. “We are from different backgrounds and age groups, but have formed a strong bond both as friends and as writers. We all have such different styles, but blend together well.” The book began life in the home of Newmarket’s Carol Ford back in the fall of 2012, where she started a writers’ group. One member, Stouffville’s Glenda Dekkema, asked if anyone wanted to join her in a writing contest. Teague agreed, and as the two started working on their creation, they discussed it with the other group members. Marguerite Cummings of Richmond Hill was inspired to write several poems, and Ford and Claudia Loopstra of King Township added some of their creativity to the mix. And as fate would have it, the women decided not to enter the original writing contest after all, but to make their collaboration into a book and attempt to find a publisher. That was a lengthy and challenging quest. “Our collaboration on the book has given us insight into the multiple stages and challenges of getting a book published. We sent out our book proposal to over 30 publishers listed in a writer’s marketing guide and from that we were offered a publishing agreement from Judson Press,” said Ford. So, no easy task to write a book or make it a reality of front and

Marney Beck back covers with spine holding together pages of printed words representing hopes and dreams. The secondary headline of the book is “Devotions to Inspire Christian Writers & Speakers” and that is a key aim of the group. “The talents, perseverance and faith of my friends in our writers’ group inspire me to become a better writer,” wrote Dekkema, or as Cummings wrote in a similar vein: “To me, this book is all about the power of partnership: partnering with one another at each stage of the book...” The creative process inspired group members in other ways, as well. “Being part of a writers’ group spurred me on to complete my memoir. The experience of being with like-minded women expanded my knowledge with respect to the craft of writing,” wrote Loopstra. If all this hasn’t piqued your interest yet, consider this glowing statement by Laura Alden, publisher of Judson Press: “This book is a testament to the skill of these authors — five of them! — who committed to work together to help others navigate the spiritual ups and downs of becoming and being a writer. The reader is the winner, as the book contains a variety of voices, themes and styles as well as the personal stories of each author.” As The Ink Flows is available through the publisher or Amazon. Congratulations to these York Region writers, on their publishing success.
Pay too much for gas Re: Why are gas prices higher in Markham? letter to the editor, March 17. The writer of this letter is not the only resident to notice the absence of competitive gas pricing. I have been talking to residents for quite awhile now about this situation. The main response that I have received is that few people actually buy their gas here because of the block pricing. So I am wondering how many of the gas station owners are able to cover their expenses and still realize a profit. If anyone is interested in expressing their displeasure with this situation, then they can Google : “GoPetition/Competitive Gas Prices/Markham”. You can register anonymously. Hot water tank scam Last fall we were approached at least five times by a team of people attempting to gain access to our basement to “inspect” our hot water tank. They claimed they needed to know the date the tank was made to determine if upgrades were needed. I told them Enercare, from whom we rent the tank, would already have that information. If Enercare wished to conduct an inspection, they would send us a letter. I repelled them each time, though they were aggressive enough to wave their photo ID at me and remove their shoes and walk right in! This past week I was approached by another team from another organization, designed to look “official”. They carried ID
tags and a binder with a TSSA logo. They, too, tried to enter forcefully by taking off their shoes. They stated they needed to check our hot water tank efficiency. This really looked fishy, as I know you need equipment and a working knowledge of thermodynamics to check efficiency properly. They terminated their attempted entry and abruptly walked away, stating they would return to complete their “inspection”. Homeowners, particularly seniors, need to know these “inspections” are mere attempts to gain a signature on a rental contract. It’s a scam, plain and simple. Do not let these people bluff you into any entry, let alone sign a document purported to be an “inspection document”. You can be locked into a longer and more expensive rental contract before you know it.

Last week, the federal government introduced its 2016 budget, which in my opinion, demonstrates that the federal government shares Ontario’s priorities and values of a collaborative approach for economic growth and job creation. Many of the new investments announced by the federal government will benefit our community of Oak Ridges – Markham, such as $120 billion over 10 years for infrastructure funding, an additional $165 million in 2016/17 for youth jobs along with the creation of an expert panel on youth jobs, and last but certainly not least, an average of $2,300 more for the Canada Child Benefit. Lastly, as many of you know, March 8 marks International Women’s Day. I had the pleasure of spending mine in Markham with the Canadian Tamils’ Chamber of Commerce where I was joined by a number of South Asian professionals. It was a terrific event to celebrate women and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Tamil women professionals. Premier in Markham in bid to cut red tape for Ontario business BY AMANDA PERSICO
apersico@yrmg.com
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne was in Markham Tuesday to launch the province’s cut-the-red-tape challenge. The announcement was made at Novo Plastics on Markland Street. The new website is an effort to cut down on unnecessary regulatory paperwork and red tape for Ontario business owners. The province is calling on residents and business owners to identify regulatory duplication, Wynne said. “Tell us about forms that are too complicated,” she STAFF PHOTO/NICK IWANYSHYN said. “We need a smarter regulatory system.” Premier Kathleen Wynne speaks at Novo Plastics in Markham while The province has been chipping away at the red launching the Red Tape Challenge, inviting the public to pinpoint prob- tape issue for several years, but it is time to do more,

Wynne said. The challenge is modeled after a similar program in the United Kingdom, where more than 3,000 regulatory changes were made over three years saving more than $1.5 million per year. While it is businesses that create jobs, it is the role of government to partner and support those businesses, Wynne said. “One of the conditions of success is to free up businesses from unnecessary paperwork, inspections and reporting,” she said. “This will give owners and employees more time to focus on growing their company’s productivity and competitiveness and growing their business.” The focus of the crowd sourcing website is to make it easier for businesses to interact with government, she added. Each suggestion will be vetted to ensure proposed changes are in keeping with current health and safety and environmental protection legislation. The online forum will look at six different sectors over two years, starting with the automotive industry, followed by food processing, financial, mining, chemical manufacturing and forestry industries. Comments and suggestions for a particular sector will be open for a two-month period. About six months after the open consultation process, the government will publish a report and working plan to implement changes. To make a suggestion, visit ontario.ca/redtapechallenge

By 2017, 17,200 ash trees will have been removed and new trees will be planted. “We are beyond the cusp of tree removal,” said the city’s operations director Barb Rabicki during a recent general committee meeting. “2016 is on upward swing, with a strong positive replanting program underway.” But planting trees and beautifying streetscapes in the wake of trees being killed by the emerald ash borer infestation, is not without its challenges. When the city launched its EAB program, residents were able to see an online map of which trees would be axed street-by-street. Planting new trees is more complicated, Rabicki said. “We hear a lot, ‘My neighbours’ tree was replanted, why not mine?’” she said. “It’s a difficult process with so many moving parts.” Markham, along with other municipalities that lost thousands of ash trees, is facing an unex-
pected challenge – low supply and high demand for trees. Cities and towns across North America are competing for the same Canadian tree stock, Rabicki said. Coupled with the low dollar, U.S. municipalities are “buying stock in great numbers,” she added. Last year, the city made about 800 substitutions for different tree species. That meant reconfiguring where each tree was planted, since Markham’s recovery plan relies heavily on tree diversification – creating small groupings of similar trees.
Tree shortage The lack of tree stock created pockets of empty boulevards. “It’s not a matter of this tree came out first, so it is replaced first,” Rabicki said. “It could mean planting on one side of the street, waiting for the right tree species then planting on the other side of the street the following year.” Other tree species come with risks, Rabicki added, noting the Asian long horn beetle preys on maple, poplar, elm and willow trees.

Native to Asia, the emerald ash borer has few effective natural enemies in North America, and native ashes have limited resistance to attack. Surveys have shown that the emerald ash borer damages and kills trees in stands within one to four years of infestation. “Everyone loves maples. We can’t continue to just plant maples,” she said. “The only way to move forward is to diversify.” The city is also looking at planting fruit trees in parks and naturalized areas. The city also needs to look at rehabilitation programs, especially for Pamona Mills in Thornhill where a large number of trees were removed. This empty space allows for invasive species, such as garlic mustard to take root, Rabicki said. The EAB program, costing more than $13 million, also included a tree inventory, which was completed last year and lists all of the city’s 105,000 boulevard trees and 45,000 park trees. As part of the tree inventory process, 1,800 greenspaces, such as woodlots, parks, easements, paths and trails were assessed and some 4,300 ash trees still need to
be removed. The city also assessed woodlot trees within about 10 metres of private property or public spaces. “Residents tend to put children’s play equipment or a tree house near shaded areas,” Rabicki said. Removing ash trees in greenspaces was not part of the initial $13.1 million budget approved by council several years ago. But with favourable prices and savings found in other areas, such as street tree removal, the initial budget would also cover this phase, Rabicki said. As well establishing a rehabilitation plan, the city also needs to look long-term, beyond 2018. “We just planted thousands and thousands of trees,” Rabicki said. “We have to make sure these young trees have a good, strong structure. We have to continue to assess and inspect these trees.”

When it comes to local planning policies, elected officials don’t have the final say. The Ontario Municipal Board has the authority to dictate how tall and wide a building can be, even after the city has weighed in. A local councillor is hoping to change that. Markham council recently passed a motion calling on the province to start a comprehensive review of the board’s functions. The heart of the motion – passed by about three dozen municipalities, including Aurora, Richmond Hill and Guelph – puts the municipal planning process first and foremost. Markham councillors agreed there is a need for the OMB as an appeal body, but say reform is long overdue.
‘Time for change’ “The OMB is unelected and has the final word on all development projects across the province,” said Councillor Karen Rea, who brought forward the motion and is also part of a provincewide team of municipal councillors calling on OMB reform. It’s time for change.” Municipalities spend time and money to lay out a city map and ensure the city’s official plan is consistent with provincial planning and growth policies, she said. After a rigorous official plan planning process, the city’s official plan is then set before the region and the province for approval. “With these policies, those wanting to do business with the city already know the rules in advance,” Rea said. “Yet, an application can be made (that is) completely opposite to what our zoning (bylaws) allow.” According to the 2014-15 annual report, close to 30 per cent of OMB cases dealt with official plan amendments. The majority of cases were from Toronto followed by
cases from central Ontario, which extends across Durham, Peel and York regions as well as the Barrie area. The OMB reform movement is also hitting home with local residents, with more than 300 signing an online petition to change the antiquated body of appeal. When a developer goes to OMB to appeal a municipal planning decision, the OMB starts a new hearing; it does not review the municipal decision process, said Markham’s development services commissioner Jim Baird. “It is as though the municipal process did not take place,” he said. The OMB is an appeal board, where municipal planning policies are taken to task by developers or community groups. That’s where the hearing can turn into a David and Goliath matchup, where the best evidence wins. OMB adjudicators listen to expert opinion and refuse to hear comments about a developer’s
practices or poor track record, said the city’s solicitor, Catharine Conrad. “It’s an unequal playing field, ” she said. “Residents often appear before the OMB unrepresented, with no planner or lawyer, no expert to testify and that puts them at a disadvantage.” Meanwhile, developers have funds to hire planners and traffic experts, she said. Costs are another issue in the OMB debate. Unlike the other municipalities
that have passed similar motions, Markham’s motion also wants to see changes on how costs are awarded and to have anti-SLAPP (strategic lawsuit against public participation) legistation apply at the OMB level. Councillor Valerie Burke does not want to see a repeat of the David Dunlap Observatory ruling in Richmond Hill from which a local community environment group was slapped with about $100,000 in court costs last fall for fighting against a development

plan that would see the loss of a large woodland area. “This is a very small community group, they don’t have any money,” Burke said. “They just cared about the community. Community groups should not get punished. It’s cruel and unusual punishment.” Councillors from across the region are hosting a summit May 14 in Markham for elected officials from across the GTA. Any resolution from the education summit will be forwarded to the province for consideration.

Children mirror how their parents are feeling. When parents exude stress, sadness, or despair, their children do too. Angel Freedman, B.S.W, RSW, works with families in crisis every day. Specializing in relationships, separation and divorce, Angel helps families work together and thrive as they adapt to the new normal of a crisis, with confidence. Families that invest in counselling can overcome obstacles, and if they decide to separate they learn to grieve, heal and emerge stronger. Parents learn to take care of themselves, honouring the commitment they made to love, protect and care for their children. If you or someone you know is struggling in a difficult relationship, there is help. With 40% of marriages ending in separation and divorce, Angel has focused her practice on helping her clients navigate the difficult terrain that is part of family breakdown. Most couples don’t want an angry, acrimonious divorce. They want to separate amicably. But how do they do that? Angel offers her clients practical, supportive counselling. Angel’s work is meaningful. Angel offers individual, couple and family counselling as well as group workshops and parenting classes.

Citizen scientists sought to protect York Region wildlife By KIM ZARZOUR
kzarzour@yrmg.com
They don’t know what we are, we creatures huddled in our metal capsules, wheeling past at breakneck speeds. And in horrifying numbers, reptiles and amphibians end up smushed under our tires. It’s an increasing problem in our suburban communities where development is destroying habitats, leaving wildlife in shrinking, isolated patches with no way to escape.
“The work by volunteers will support the work we are doing on assessing connectivity of habitats,” said Kasey Livingston, a project manager. If the Citizen Scientist project can validate where hot spot priorities are, the TRCA can take steps to protect that wildlife, said Vince D’Elia, project manager. Directional fencing and culverts can guide wildlife crossings under roadways, for example, and piles of large rocks can provide an alterna-
Now, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority is launching a new initiative — the Road Ecology Citizen Science Project — using volunteers to help gather data on wildlife “road interaction”. The TRCA is looking for citizens with an interest in ecology and biology to conduct field surveys and walk the roadside of predetermined monitoring sites, recording all signs of wildlife crossing, basking, feeding, nesting, injured and deceased on and around roadways.
tive for snakes seeking warmth. Volunteers aged 18 or over (or over 14 years of age if accompanied by a legal guardian) will be required to attend at least one field training session. They will be asked to commit to eight hours a month (in twohour morning segments) from April to October. Orientation is April 7, 7 to 8:30 p.m. at TRCA offices in Vaughan. Field training will be held throughout the month at Heart Lake Conservation Area in Brampton. Visit trca.ca

Minor bantam AA Waxers bring home York Simcoe title BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA
mhayakawa@yrmg.com
The Markham AA minor bantam Waxers ended their season on a positive note
after skating off with the York Simcoe Hockey League title with a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Georgina Blaze in the fifth game of their first-
to-six-point series Tuesday in Sutton. Nursing a five points to three lead entering Tuesday’s game, the Waxers required a
win or tie to claim the title. The Waxers broke the ice by scoring the game’s first goal in the second period and maintained that slim margin entering the third. Georgina battled back to tie the game near the midway mark.
“We’ve had an up and down season, but we played our best hockey over the last two series... With overtime looming, the Waxers regained the upper hand with two minutes remaining in regulation time with what would turn out to be the game-winning tally. Elated in what his club accomplished, Kim Rasmussen, Waxers’ head coach, credited his players’ resolve in winning the title. “We’ve had an up and down season, but we played our best hockey over the last two series,” he said.

Yu paced the Jets’ offence with three goals while Matthew Trueman and Cole Briere each had a pair. Daniel Poichini, William Gougoulias and Jack Newburg each added single tallies. Rohun Pain recorded the shutout. Facing the Georgina Blaze in their second outing, the Jets were paced by two-goal efforts from Poichini, Yu and Carlo Visconti in an 8-0 win. Briere and Newburg added single tallies and Pain notched his second shutout. The Jets then faced West Hill in their final round-robin game and skated off with a 2-1 win and set the stage for their rematch in the final. How to help your lawn bounce back from winter Take your grass from brown to green with simple spring tips. Lawns are exposed to the elements throughout the year, and each season brings its own unique set of challenges. Summer heat waves can make it hard for lawns to maintain their lush green appeal, while the falling leaves of autumn can threaten root systems if not handled properly. Winter frost and snow also can pose a threat to lawns, leaving homeowners with some work to do when spring arrives. Spring is a season of revival, and that spirit of rejuvenation extends to lawns. When the last vestiges of winter begin to disappear, homeowners can dust off their gardening gloves and start taking steps to revitalize their lawns for the months ahead.
Consult a professional landscaper Homeowners with considerable experience tending to damaged lawns can no doubt identify and address problems on their own. That’s because many problems are a result of the weather, which tends to be similar and produce similar problems from one year to the next. But inexperienced homeowners should consult professional landscapers before attempting to address problems on their own. Winter lawn damage may be caused by a variety of factors that can produce similar symptoms, and professional landscapers can identify the culprits behind such damage and provide the most effective solutions to restore the lawn.
Look for signs of damage
* Limited time only. Illustration is artist’s concept. Prices and specifications are subject to change without notice. Brokers Protected. E.&.O.E.
Winter can be hard on lawns, so it’s important for homeowners to look for signs of damage before they begin planning any springtime landscaping projects. Salt damage can occur in areas that received heavy snowfall over the winter. Many communities use rock salt to de-ice snow- and icecovered roads, and that rock salt is largely made up of sodium chloride, which can draw moisture from
grass and cause it to brown. Salt trucks used during winter storms often spit salt out onto lawns, so don’t be surprised if you notice brown spots on your grass, especially in those areas closest to the road. Winter lawn damage may also be caused by voles, burrowing mouse-like rodents that make paths beneath the snow to hide from predators and feed on grass blades and roots. Lawns with distinctly matted areas may also have been damaged by snow mould that can weaken turf.
Remove debris A light raking can help remove any debris that accumulated over the winter. Such debris, which may include fallen branches and fallen leaves left behind from the final days of fall, can prevent lawns from getting the sun and water they need to thrive. Remove this debris, but make sure the grass is not frozen when you do, as walking on frozen grass can cause further damage.
Let the grass grow Mowing the lawn is a chore that’s reserved for spring, summer and maybe early fall, but it’s important that homeowners don’t jump the gun and mow too early after winter. A patient approach allows the grass to reestablish itself, so let it grow a little higher than you normally would before the first cut. When the grass is roughly 4.5 inches high, you can cut it down to three inches and then maintain your normal mowing routine throughout the rest of spring and summer. Revitalizing lawns in springtime is a priority for many homeowners, who should always consult landscaping professionals if they feel uncertain about addressing any damage they discover during their post-winter lawn inspections.

In the series opener Friday, Foegele scored the first goal of the series, which held up as the game-winner and was credited with an assist in a 6-0 win. Foegele followed that effort with a four-goal outburst in the second game Saturday tallying the game-winner for the second straight night and earning first star honours in a 7-3 victory. The power forward led the Frontenacs with 13 shots on goal in the first two games, more than doubling his per game average over the course of the 2015-16 campaign. The Frontenacs and the Generals continued their Eastern Conference QuarterFinal series with the third game in Oshawa. During the regular season, Foegele recorded 13 goals and 35 assists in 52 regular season games. UP TO

Grieving father wrote book to honour son’s wishes Teenager Jonathan Leitao became a source of inspiration and comfort to his family

y the end of his short life, Jonathan Leitao had travelled to 15 countries. His father, Vince Leitao, remembers the time his family — he and his wife Espy, son Jonathan and older son Matthew — took an excursion on a submarine during a Caribbean vacation. Leitao remembers how excited Jonathan was by the visually stunning displays and all the other trips the family took together. Unfortunately, young Jonathan was also forced to travel a journey no parent wants his or her child to take. Jonathan began feeling sick in October of 2013. After that, he endured tests, surgery and hospital admissions. In May 2014, he was diagnosed with a type of untreatable liver cancer that is extremely uncommon in patients under age 25. Doctors predicted he had four to nine months to live. For Vince and Espy Leitao, this devastating news was incomprehensible. This was their beloved son who loved practising basketball for hours in the driveway of their

Richmond Hill home. But when told he was dying, Jonathan had little anguish, his father said. He cried for about 20 minutes. After that, he spoke like it was an event that was happening and moved on, Leitao said.
“That’s what changed my life,” Leitao said. “Jonathan said: ‘I’m not afraid to die. It’s nothing’,” Leitao said. “I was amazed, looking at the way he was holding himself (together) and talking. It’s a spirit

within himself that liberated him.” This teenager became a pillar of wisdom and strength for his family. “It was a tragedy,” Leitao said. “Our kid was dying, yet comfort was coming from him. He asked me, ‘Are you going to be OK?’ I said ‘no’. He said, ‘You have to accept it, let go, then you will be OK.’ I never taught him that. Where does a 16-year-old get this insight, this wisdom?” Jonathan was a student at St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Elementary School in Richmond Hill and went on to attend St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School. His obituary explains his final months. “For the last 10 months he suffered bravely and patiently, prayerfully hoping for a cure. He eventually accepted that he is going home after just about 16 years on this earth, and helped us accept and let go.” Jonathan wanted to help other sick children, to explain to them the procedures he’d had so they wouldn’t be afraid. When he became sick, he realized he couldn’t do this and was Your community newspaper is celebrating the achievements and contributions of everyday, ordinary people, who have affected the lives of others in extraordinary ways. hoping his father could help such children, instead. Leitao wrote a self-published book Jonathan, Do You Know Me? From loss of a child to spiritual awakening, published in 2015. It is a personal story of loss and grief transcended by a spiritual awakening. Proceeds from the book are being donated to The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation in honour of Jonathan. Leitao knows his son would also have been happy to learn of his advocacy for changes to Ontario’s Employment Standards Act. Leitao has lobbied for the introduction of Jonathan’s Law, a bill dedicated to the memory of Jonathan that requests a provision of up to a 52-week bereavement leave for parents who lose a child.
