Wildlife illness cases on rise

Buttonville Airport will continue in operation at least until late 2017, parties working together on its development into a residential and commercial hub announced this week in

another extension for the airport’s life.

Cadillac Fairview and Armadale Co. Ltd., owners of the airport lands at 16th Avenue and Hwy. 404 in Markham, submitted an application to rezone the site in 2011 to permit a world-class employment district and vibrant,

mixed-use lifestyle destination, they said.

Authorities have not granted the land use change for the project and the application is currently before the Ontario Municipal Board.

Don Cousens Award winner calls award namesake ‘an inspiration’

A princely wave from a 10-yearold hero, plus a group “selfie” of longstanding champions of character were poignant moments at the 10th annual York Region Character Community Awards in Richmond Hill last Wednesday.

Some 15 individuals, schools, groups and business leaders across York Region were in the spotlight at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts for demonstrating exemplary character attributes such as compassion, perseverance, respect, honesty and optimism.

Two special honourees this year are the Donald Cousens Award winner, Kathleen Redmond of East Gwillimbury, and the Community Hero winner, Maddox Blair-Hartwick, age 10, of Georgina.

Redmond is a past Character Community Foundation member and last year helped develop and deliver a series of workshops, Creating a Character Culture, to help organizations, businesses, cultural groups and charities grow healthy, effective workplaces.

An author and corporate trainer, she founded the Centre for Character Leadership in 1993. She has worked with York municipalities, and national and international companies, and volunteers as a director with Routes of Georgina.

Redmond told the audience at the ceremony she is “honoured and humbled” by the Don Cousens award, and that Cousens is “an inspiration to me”.

Maddox earned the hero award for exhibiting quick thinking in a time of medical emergency. He and his mother were dog-sitting for a friend in a home in Keswick. His mother, Melissa, lost consciousness and collapsed.

Maddox called 911 on her cell phone, but as he didn’t know the address of the home, ran to a neighbour, who gave emergency personnel the response address. In the meantime, he put two dogs in the home in a separate room, so they would not interfere with EMS personnel and was able to give details about his mom’s medications and medical history to help in her care.

down to tell the boy to acknowledge the heartfelt applause from the crowd, which he did with a princely wave.

The Elementary Citizen of Character award was given to Mya Cheung of Markham. Mya and the students in the Milk Bag Club at All Saints Catholic Elementary School passionately demonstrate their

concern for the poor. Under Mya’s direction, their combined efforts have produced close to 100 sleeping mats in the last 18 months.

These milk bag mats went to help the homeless in Toronto, as well as throughout Central America, the Caribbean, South America, Africa and the Philippines.

There are two winners of the

Adult Citizen of Character award this year. One is Kathy Proudfoot from East Gwilimbury, in her second term as a director on the Southlake Hospital board and previously chair of the Community Counts campaign for the hospital.

A cancer survivor herself, she volunteers with both the Cancer Society and Southlake’s regional cancer centre. For 14 years, she has also been involved with the Nin Os Kom Tin organization, raising cultural awareness and rekindling relationships between aboriginal peoples and other cultures within York, plus she supports the Ranji Singh Foundation, promoting social and cultural integration.

Michael Delaney of Markham also earned the Citizen of Character award. As a custodian at Markville Secondary School, Delaney always shows care for staff and students by consistently lending a helping hand. He frequently goes beyond the call of duty in his support of all school ventures and participates in many after-school events and functions — showing warmth, compassion and respect.

The School of Character Public Board Award goes to Thornhill Secondary School. Student leaders exhibit their caring and inclusiveness by ensuring incoming Grade

9 students a smooth transition and supporting the school’s booming English Language Learners population, along with mental health priorities. The school’s Hand-in-Hand Club collaborates with staff, students, board representatives and community members to promote a spirit of respect, understanding and cooperation to help newcomers adjust to school life in Canada.

The School of Character Catholic Board Award goes to All Saints Catholic Elementary School in Markham. Many of the students, parents, staff and other partners are actively involved as ambassadors for numerous community initiatives outside of school and on their own time.

Key initiatives include raising awareness for bullying prevention, greater sensitivity to mental health concerns and a celebration of differences among students at the school.

Energy conservation and recycling efforts are also exhibited through the school’s eco-committee.

Family mourns daughter’s death in weekend Scarborough shooting jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

Family and friends of a young Markham woman are in mourning after police say she was collateral damage in a shooting over the weekend.

Cynthia Mullapudi, 24, died after a hail of bullets pierced the Honda Pilot she was seated in at the Parkway Mall LCBO in Scarborough after 10 p.m. Friday.

Mullapudi and Joseph Anzolona, 26, were killed while the other two people in the vehicle were unharmed.

Her parents, Dr. John Krupavaram and Shoba Thalluri, are in mourning and her uncle, Victor Rampogu, spent much of Saturday night driving up from his home in Pennsylvania, where he runs the Vision and Mission Ministries church.

He took to social media to

Cynthia Mullapudi display multiple pictures of Cynthia, including one of her recent baptism into his church, noting she had accepted Christ into her life six months ago, stating: “My life is peaceful and I am happy with it”.

Cynthia came to Canada 16 years ago from Mahabubnagar, Telangana, India, according to news reports.

She and her family are members of the expat Telugu community in the GTA. According to two friends, Alex and Katrina Ferro, Cynthia worked hard at school and had just graduated and landed her “dream job”.

“I’ve never had a greater connection to someone — she was the sweetest human being, and we were mentally and spiritually on the same level,” Alex told the Toronto Star. “She was always the first to help anyone in need — that’s just her character.”

Police said Anzolona was the intended target of the shooting and that the suspect was an alleged gang member.

Harris Nnane is charged with two counts of firstdegree murder. He was arrested at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Dashcam video shows car roaring between two other vehicles, travelling the wong way.

Car caught on dashcam ID’d York Regional Police said yesterday they have identified the car seen in a dashcam video driving through a red light in the wrong lanes in Markham.

After police released the video Tuesday, they received information regarding the suspect vehicle’s licence plate.

Police located the vehicle, a beige, 2004 Toyota Corolla, and identified the owner.

The incident in the video took place April 18 between noon and 1 p.m. on 16th Avenue, east of Markham road, near St. Brother André Catholic High School.

The investigation is ongoing, as police seek anyone who may be able to identify the person who was driving the car April 18 at the time

of the incident.

Warning needed for warnings

Re: What will it take to stop scourge on our roads?, column by Marney Beck, April 14.

At the end of her column, was this rhetorical question: “When are we — as a society — going to say enough is enough of this scourge?”

As a society, there is very little we can do about such [drinking driving] behaviour. Humans are endowed with free will, which means we can make choices. Some are so full of themselves that they truly believe rules are made for others.

I know one individual personally who was caught speeding at over 200 km/ hr. A few weeks later he was caught speeding again (at about the same speed), by the same police officer!

How can we explain such idiotic behaviour?

We know they are harmful and yet some of us believe we have the right to do whatever we want, even if the harmful second-hand smoke will cause illness in others.

In addition, convicted offenders should be ordered to make public speeches to young people for the rest of their lives on the evils of impaired driving.

A 10-year sentence for killing four people is hardly a deterrant, no matter how we measure it.

The reality is that our parole system will effectively reduce that sentence to three or four years.

It is not a matter of being vengeful, it is a matter of finding effective means to minimize such carnage.

When a person makes a choice, s/he should be held responsible for its outcome — for life.

Their victims do not have that choice.

aving grown up on a dairy farm back in the 1930s and ‘40s, I often reflect on what some still refer to as “the good old days”. Ah yes, “the good old days”.

Like milking cows for goodness sake that made my wrists feel like they would break.

The sting of a tail that continually switched or pain from a bovine that repeatedly kicked.

Lifting wheat sheaves as heavy as lead, cranking a tractor with the battery dead.

Trying to plow so level and straight with a moving cow as a headland stake.

Returning from church on a Sunday morn to find the herd had ravaged the corn.

The cabbages harvested and the cauliflower tied but the tomato crop had all been fried.

A silo so full, no reason to frown, then Hurricane Hazel blew it all down.

Oats and barley, wheat fields all, destroyed by hail the size of golf balls.

The vegetable garden caught in the storm’s path, fell to the fury of mother nature’s wrath.

Building up muscles hard as a rock, worked by the calendar, not by the clock.

Walking to school, what a bad rap, traces of cow hair still on my cap.

Finding all classes cancelled that day, turned and walked home, no reason to stay.

Snowbanks as high as telephone wires, two suits of woollies were common attire.

Temperatures hovering at 20 below, even more grief than the depth of the snow.

Morning wake-ups weren’t so nice with all of the chamber pots coated with ice.

But the outhouse was handy, it sure was a dandy, no time to sit and recline.

For protruding thistles felt like missiles targeting someone’s behind.

A Findlay stove had its own alcove belching out heat day and night.

The family cat was content to nap dreaming of food other than mice.

It was there we studied our next day’s lesson, oblivious of a radio’s transgression.

But town gals were clever, they never, no never, accepted our welcoming bids.

They wanted no part of a smooch in the park with we common country kids.

At Sunday school we learned the gold rule, excuses were never believed.

The walk there and back was a matter of fact, our parents were never deceived.

Hockey of course was a driving force and rinks were readily available.

Frozen ponds were prime when we had free time and competition always obtainable.

Street dances were grand with the Billy Hole band, folks came from miles around.

Rock ‘n roll tunes, a barn dance or two, dancers enjoyed the sound.

I truly feel bad and a trifle sad at the enjoyment I understood.

Knowing kids today won’t be able to say their old days were really that good.

North American Table Tennis athletes competed for a ticket to this summer’s 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro from April 8 to 10.

We were thrilled to cheer on Markham’s own table tennis competitors at the qualifiers and participate in the medal ceremony.

In badminton news, the 2017 Pan Am Junior Badminton Championships will be hosted by Badminton Ontario at the Markham Pan Am Centre in July 2017.

This will be the first “legacy” international badminton competition hosted by the Centre since the 2015 Pan Am Games.

The upcoming season at the Flato Markham Theatre is sure to impress most everyone, with programming and performances for every age, genre and culture.

The 2016-17 season kicks off with Canadian great The Nylons and their Farewell Tour followed by a multitude of jaw-dropping performances from artists from around the world – reflecting Markham’s diverse community.

Through the upcoming season, “you get a sense of the incredible diversity here in Markham,” Mayor Frank Scarpitti said during the season launch celebration this week.

“And it is arts and culture that brings unity to the many cultures that call Markham home.”

The upcoming season goes on to feature close to 50 different productions and more than 60 performances.

A new feature this year is the collection of breakthrough artists, such as Scott Helman and Quinn Sullivan.

“We’re making a statement this year,” theatre general manager Eric Lariviere said. “This (collection) is testimony to these emerging artists.”

The theatre also boosted its Discovery Program to more than a dozen free matinee performances for local children in grades 1 through 3, where the goal is to have every child in Markham attend a theatre performance each year.

The upcoming season is split between several series designed to entice every age group and culture – world stage, totally classical, great Canadian performers, all that jazz, fabulous footwork, nostalgia, family fun, classic rock and comedy.

Each series includes between four and ten concerts throughout the year.

The world stage series features the steamy Broadway hit and Tony Award nominee Forever Tango, which will be making its Markham debut in the fall.

“We pride ourself on our global aspect,” Lariviere said. “We have artists from Canada, Russia, Japan, China, Brazil, Argentina. I can go on and on.”

Other world stage performances include Collabro, Gypsy Sound Revolution, Fernando Varela and Kerry Stratton and much more.

Another local debut is the 5 Browns, a sibling classical piano sensation that brings five grand pianos on stage.

The all that jazz series features launch party headliner jazz flutist Jane Bunnett and her all-female Cuban band Maqueque, as well as Laila Bialia and Hiromi: the Trio Project to name a few.

Patrons can expect to be captivated by the theatre’s fabulous footwork series featuring several groundbreaking dance companies such as ProArteDanza, making its Markham debut, Sampradaya Dance Creations and Shanghai Dance Theatre.

Classic stories come alive through dance and ballet with the annual Nutcracker performance by Canada’s Ballet Jörgen, a special children’s performance featuring Max and Ruby and a performance of Swan Lake by the Russian National Ballet Theatre.

Canadian performers include Kira Isabella, Shaun Majumdar, Robert Michaels and John McDermott.

The upcoming season also boasts plenty of performances for the classic music fan, including Classic Albums Live: Beatles Abby Road; tributes to Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash; The Eagles; Earth Wind and Fire; Abba and Motown.

Another Markham first is the inaugural LOL Markham Comedy Festival in early 2017 along with the return of the Just for Laughs Road Show.

The number of distempered skunks and raccoons having to be “dispatched” by police in York Region has ballooned so much that the service has stopped the practice.

As a result of the police decision, each municipality in the region has now been advised that as of Sept. 1, police will no longer be fulfilling this role and they will have to figure out their own methods.

In 2015, police euthanized 80 animals with their firearms, a 175-per-cent rise from 2014 when 29 were put down.

It’s not only an inefficient use of the service’s resources, according to York Regional Police, but also a safety risk, considering officers are often having to shoot the injured animals with shotguns in urban areas around highly populated areas.

Thornhill, specifically, has seen two incidents where people felt at risk near officers as they destroyed animals.

Last November, a 78-year-old man received injuries to his head after police shot a seriously injured deer in the Henderson and Proctor avenues area.

Then, in March, a postal carrier reported feeling fearful when police shot a skunk with him nearby — the officers waited several hours for the distempered animal to meander its way to a safe area so that it could be shot.

That same day, police were called to another nearby site to help out with another skunk.

In this case, the animal was bleeding from its eyes and had other festering body parts.

In a letter sent to each town and

city, police said they will only be responding to animal complaints when it’s been caused as a result of vehicle collisions.

“Police firearms are not meant to be used as primary tools for wildlife management,” the letter states.

Distemper is a viral disease also found in dogs and mimics the symptoms of rabies, however only rabies is transferable to humans. Distemper can result in animals appearing discombobulated, wandering in circles and unafraid of humans and can also lead to paralysis and brain

damage. Dogs should be vaccinated against the disease as a precaution.

York Region is not alone in its struggles with distemper. Toronto has seen a marked rise in the number of skunks with distemper, along with other parts of the GTA, Waterloo and throughout Ontario.

Bill Dowd, owner of Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, who works in many jurisdictions across the GTA, said he’s seen a 20- to 30-per-cent rise in the number of distemper cases in many communities.

“We’re seeing warmer weather and, as a result, everything is more active, the animals that would have died from distemper in colder winters have survived and we’re witnessing the effects,” he said. Other results of the warm weather, have been healthier and stronger raccoon populations.

“Raccoons used to be hidden away all winter, dealing with food scarcity, but now they are able to get food in the winter,” he said. “We used to see litters of four or five, now we’re seeing six or seven in a litter.”

Sajad Ahmad from Vaughan’s 24/7 Pest Control agreed, noting it’s likely the growth in raccoon and skunk populations that is driving the rise in distemper.

“It’s population control, like in any species,” he said. “When the population rises, more disease will come. Also it spreads faster because raccoons are territorial, so they get in many fights, scratching one another.”

In 2015, after a 10-year hiatus in Ontario, a case of rabies was discovered in Hamilton.

The penetration into the Golden Horseshoe has raised warning flags at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, as officials are concerned it might spread to other communities. However, that hasn’t occurred, according to one scientist who is studying the disease throughout Ontario.

Chris Davies said he has sampled close to 3,000 animals and nothing has been found in York Region yet.

That $2.99 T-shirt is more than just a bargain.

While less than a fancy cup of coffee, cheap clothing (also known as fast fashion) comes at a high environmental price and with a huge carbon footprint, says Markham’s waste and environmental services manager Claudia Marsales.

“It’s nice to save money,” she said during a recent Markham committee meeting. “But the carbon cost to make the $2.99 T-shirt is huge. You wear it a couple of times then buy another T-shirt.”

That’s the focus behind the city’s new textile recycling program – taking what’s old and making it new again.

Textile recycling is the last leg of Markham’s Best of the Best waste diversion strategy approved in 2012, Marsales said.

But the challenge is educating residents on what textiles can be recycled – anything from the lingering sock, old boxers, sneakers with holes, pillows and soiled sheets.

“People think it’s only perfect items,” she said. “The message is we will take every piece you have.”

Through the clear garbage bag program, the city can see there are a lot of textiles being thrown out, Marsales said.

“We’re seeing cheap shoes and a golf t-shirt that comes with from a golf tournament,” she said.

There needs to be more consumer education when it comes to fast fashion crimes.

“There needs to be more consumer information on how much pesticides are used to grow cotton, how many litres of water are used to make one T-shirt,” Marsales said. “It goes beyond the $2.99 price tag.”

While Markham has one of the toughest textile donation bylaws in the GTA, the city wants to make it easier for residents to drop off unwanted items.

Markham, in partnership with the Salvation Army, is creating new smart textile donation bins that will be placed at fire stations and community centres throughout the city.

Placing bins at community centres sparked some debate with some councillors arguing fire stations are monitored 24/7 and provide more safety for those dropping off and deter potential theft.

Mayor Frank Scarpitti pushed to have the bins at community centres as well as major retail locations in addition to fire stations.

“Community centres are a natural place to visit,” he said. “With kids in the back seat, going to a fire station is an extra stop. That cultural change will happen when we make it easy for people to participate.”

The new smart bins are to be handcrafted by the Mennonite community and will feature built-in sensors to monitor when containers need to be serviced or emptied and will be lit by solar lights.

“We may not be the first but we demonstrate how to do it right,” Scarpitti said.

The Salvation Army will sort through the donations and service the bins at no cost to the city. Resalable items will be sold through the Salvation Army’s Thrift Store locations where proceeds help support local food banks, shelters, children’s camps and addiction treatment facilities.

The city plans to showcase the new smart donation bins at the international textile recycling summit held in Markham next month.

The summit will feature speakers from San Francisco, New York and Halifax, all of whom either have textile recycling programs or are in the midst of rolling them out.

Buttonville project delayed amid OMB proceedings

As a result CF, Armadale and Torontair Ltd. have extended the timeline for airport operations to continue until at least fall 2017.

The outlook for extensions beyond this date will be dictated by progress on approvals, they said.

The OMB proceedings date back to 2013, when the airport located adjacent to Hwy. 404 at 16th Avenue was initially scheduled to close.

Richmond Hill, Markham and York Region all have a stake in the proceedings, with several mediation sessions set for July and another prehearing in August.

Transportation, traffic and land use are among issues being ironed out.

The Buttonville Town Centre proposal envisions a man-made lake and water feature along the west side of the 170-acre property, complete with a boardwalk and restaurant on the water.

The lake would be large enough to accommodate dragon boat races.

The area would be home to about 7,200 residents with up to 3.6 million square feet of residential space. The project would include a 60-storey tower.

The plan also envisioned some 22,000 jobs with up to 1.2 million square feet of retail, commercial and entertainment space and up to 4.4 million square feet of office space.

There are also plans for a hotel and convention centre

on site. The plan would also extend Allstate Parkway up to 16th Avenue.

This isn’t the first time the mixed-use development has been held up by land use and planning issues.

In 2014, it was announced the airport would remain open until 2016.

Last fall, the airport was the backdrop for the miniseries 11.22.63, based on a novel by Stephen King in which a man travels back in time to try to prevent the assassination of president John F. Kennedy.

pring has finally arrived, and with it has come a number of excellent initiatives brought forward by our provincial government, as well as the celebration of several community milestones in Oak Ridges-Markham.

As some of you may know, April is BeADonor month in Ontario.

Each year the Trillium Gift of Life Network, which is responsible for the oversight of transplant and organ donation activities in the province, uses the month of April to raise awareness of the need for organ and tissue donation in the province.

Currently, there are more than 1,600 people on the wait list for life-saving organ transplants, but only 29 per cent of Ontarians are registered as donors.

To become an organ donor you must register at www.beadonor.ca On April 5, the Ontario government passed legislation that will create a presumption that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

MPP Helena Jaczek Oak Ridges-Markham diagnosed in first responders is work-related.

The presumption applies to police officers, firefighters, paramedics, certain workers in correctional institutions and secure youth justice facilities, dispatchers of police, firefighter and ambulance services and emergency response teams.

This commitment is part of the province’s strategy to prevent or mitigate the risk of PTSD and provide first responders with faster access to treatment and the information they need to stay healthy.

As the former Medical Officer of Health and Commissioner of Health Services

for York Region, I recognize the medical importance of treating PTSD, and I think it is important that we continue to acknowledge the tough work that these brave women and men do to keep us safe.

April also was a busy month in our community.

On April 7, I joined the federal Minister of Health and MP for MarkhamStouffville, the Hon. Dr. Jane Philpott, at the Markham Stouffville Hospital for the Innovation Ex event.

We saw a dozen innovations geared towards making patient care more effective and efficient.

As a physician, I appreciate the value of innovation through collaboration with peers, the front lines and the leaders of the medical community.

For some, it’s about dignity and choice. For others, it is a dangerous move that will turn doctors into executioners.

There was a range of opinions in Newmarket Saturday when York Region MPs met with residents at the York Region administrative centre to discuss Bill C-14, a bill now in second reading of Parliament that will determine if medically assisted death has legality in Canada.

Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill MP Leona Allesley, Richmond Hill MP Majid Jowhari, Markham-Thornhill MP and Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister John McCallum, Newmarket-Aurora MP Kyle Peterson, Markham-Stouffville MP and Minister of Health Jane Philpott, King-Vaughan MP Deb Schulte and Vaughan-Woodbridge MP Francesco Sorbara were in attendance.

The MPs were joined by several dozen residents from across York Region whose opinions were split across the board.

“This is the most complex and challenging file that I’ve had the privilege of working on since coming into government,” Philpott told residents at the meeting.

Indeed it was, as some residents saw the bill as having “gone too far”, while others thought it “hadn’t gone far enough.”

Bill C-14 aims to make amendments to the Criminal Code of Canada to allow for medically assisted deaths in special cases. Those special cases were outlined through safeguards presented in the bill. For example, patients with mental illnesses, under the age of 18 or requesting in-advance assistance were not allowed to seek medically assisted death.

That news wasn’t enough for Penny Mills, who suffers from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Barely able to speak coherently, she made a direct plea to Philpott to allow an advance request.

“I beg you to draw that distinction so that we don’t have to suffer,” she said to the applause of half the audience.

Another resident suffering from pancreatic cancer, Manuel Solera, made a similar plea that he “be allowed to die with dignity”.

through cancer, dementia or other life-threatening illnesses. While those opposed feared the consequences of the legislation, one resident said he “wouldn’t trust a doctor who would do that”.

As it stands now, the bill remains a “balanced” framework, as Philpott hesitantly described it, while personal autonomy remains a “fundamental principle”, she said.

“Personal autonomy, request for vulnerable people and the conscience rights of health care providers are fundamental principles we tried to uphold in this legislation,” Philpott explained.

As there is no international consensus to medically assisted deaths, the legislation will be monitored by the federal government to ensure its outlined safeguards are followed.

Belgium and the Netherlands have had medically assisted deaths permitted by law for the past 15 years.

Philpott stressed that palliative care was still a priority.

palliative priority “We have not had a palliative care system in Canada as it ought to be,” she said. “In general, only 15 to 25 per cent of Canadians have access to high quality palliative care.”

Jowhari reassured residents that their thoughts and opinions would be with the politicians when the final vote is cast on the legislation.

half applauded The other half applauded comments describing the controversil bill as giving doctors “executioner power” as described by several residents.

A Richmond Hill resident asked the MPs what the consequence would be if Parliament did not pass the legislation before the Supreme Court’s deadline. Philpott explained that since the Supreme Court had given Canadian adults the right to medically assisted deaths Feb. 6, 2015 — in the aftermath of the Carter versus Canada case — not meeting the deadline would result in an amendment to the Criminal Code without legislation.

Parliament is pressed for time, as the Supreme Court mandated legislation to be prepared by the extended deadline of June 6.

With just over one month left until legislation is expected to pass, residents are anything but unanimous on their views of the bill.

A passionate group of over 140 artists, of all ages and levels of expertise, the MGA has been promoting visual arts in the Markham area since 1981.

From demonstrations and presentations by acclaimed artists, to affordable workshops for the public, the MGA offers a number of opportunities to interested artists to learn more about creativity in the community.

The group has donated works of art and created murals hung in the Cornell Library, Thornhill Library, and Markham Seniors Home. The group is looking forward to creating a new addition for the city this year.

The membership’s Jade anniversary will be celebrated at the annual Juries Show at the McKay Gallery (197 Main St., Unionville).

On May 26 the show, “LOOK!”, will display work inspired by the title submitted by local members.

The Unionville Minor Hockey Association is breathing a sigh of relief and sporting a grin these days.

The welcomed news eminated from the Ontario Minor Hockey Association in granting permission to their house league select teams from novice to juvenile who compete as the Unionville Jets to continue their participation in the North York Select League.

At least for the 2016-17 season.

Fielding entries in the North York Select League since the 2006-07 season and filing an application with the OMHA prior to the start of each upcoming campaign to receive permission to compete outside of the OMHA’s jursdictional boundaries, the UMHA appealed the OMHA’s original decision that would have prevented them from competing in the North York Select League for the 2016-17 season and possibly beyond.

Citing the UMHA is in a unique position where they do not qualify in fielding a rep program because they are operating out of Markham and in which the Markham Minor Hockey Association has rep teams,

Peter Harmsen, OMHA regional director who spoke on behalf of the UMHA, said because of this, there are players seeking a calibre of hockey in which everybody can participate in.

Enter the NorthYork Select League, which is attractive to the UMHA because it features no body contact hockey in their bantam and midget age brackets.

“There’s interest in no body checking hockey,” Harmsen said. “The North York Select League is competitive and the number of players who played rep hockey who represented Markham at one time, they like it. It fits their lifestyle. It’s competitive hockey and the players who work for a living can still go to work.

“There’s a desire from the Unionville Minor Hockey Association in which play-

ers are looking for something competitive and at the same time offers a recreational program.”

While the Unionville Minor Hockey Association can field their Jets entries in the North York Select League next season, Harmsen noted the OMHA will form a committee and try to hold discussions with centres nearby Unionville who also field select house league teams to see if they can create a league with the same features the North York Select League offers.

“We want to try and pick some of the things that will work for everybody,” he said.

During the appeal process, Harmsen was quick to point out discussions were productive and amicable.

“We were shaking hands and that was important,” he said.

On their website, the UMHA thanked Harmsen for his efforts.

As well, they were pleased with the response from their other association members who were concerned with the OMHA’s original ruling.

“Many thanks to Peter Harmsen our regional director for supporting our appeal and to all those who attended special meetings to discuss the situation,” they said.

Funky 5K fun way to raise funds for MSH The Unionville Festival has a variety of social events catering to everyone who attends.

When this year’s festivities take place, one such event which brings the community together is the Unionville Festival Funky 5K. To take place June 5, the run begins on historic Main Street near the Crosby Arena at 8:15 a.m. This year’s third annual event attracts local runners, walkers, friends and family who take to the prescribed course to raise funds for a worthy cause - the Markham Stouffville Hospital’s Stollery Family Centre for Children and Childbirth.

To date, the event has raised more than $10,000, cited Sara Sterling, race director.

With an anticipated 500 participants who have the option of participating in the 5K run or walk or 2K family walk in this year’s event, she is hoping they can double that amount.

Among some of the participants already registered are more than 40 Markham firefighters who will run the 5K or 2K events in their full bunker gear as a means of creating

further awareness for the cause at hand.

With Angus Glen Golf Club being the presenting sponsor, club president Cailey Stollery is excited to once again be part of this year’s event.

“We have always been dedicated to supporting Markham Stouffville Hospital and this is just another way to give back while bringing the community together,” she said.

Having given birth at Markham Stouffville Hospital, Stirling added she knows from first-hand experience how valuable the facility is in serving Markham and Stouffville residents.

“I had my babies at Markham Stouffville Hospital, as did so many of our neighbours, and have relied upon its wonderful staff and facilities for many years, it is an honour to give back,” she said.

Unionville hurdler signs deal with Puma Sarah Wells received an offer she could not refuse.

The 26-year-old Markham native and 400-metre hurdles runner recently signed a multi-year deal with Puma.

While terms of the deal were not disclosed, Wells said discussions had been in the works over the past three months.

Wells said it includes apparel along with a financial component that will come in handy for her training and participation in competitions along with a bonus schedule.

“I’m definitely pleased with it,” she said from Huntington Beach, Calif., where she is training and preparing to participate in some outdoor events.

“With this being an Olympic year I’d like to do some big things and it’s nice to get support from Puma.”

A Unionville High School graduate and silver medallist in the 400m hurdles at the 2015 Pan American Games, Wells has already attained the 400m hurdle Olympic standard time of 56.20.

Her personal best time is 55.65.

But to confirm her spot for Canada to compete at the upcoming Summer Olympics, Wells has to finish in the top three when the

Also with Puma is Markham resident and 2015 100m and 200m Pan American Games’ gold medallist Andre De Grasse.

The 21-year-old Milliken Mills High School grad signed a pro deal with Puma worth $11.25 million U.S. last fall.

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Trailblazers served up two berths for the upcoming Ontario High School Invitational Tournament table tennis championships after earning two top-three placings at the York Region Athletic Association championships in Markham last week.

In the boys’ field, the Trailblazers tandem of Andy Zou, 17, and Nigel Ng, 17, finished first after they defeated the Bayview Secondary School pair of Sourena Alizadeh and Leo Han 3-1 in their bestof-five final, which has each player competing in a singles’ match and one doubles’ event and if necessary, two additional singles’ matches.

For Zou, a Grade 11 student, and Ng, in Grade 12, it marked their first season competing as a tandem for the Trailblazers.

Borzou Salavati, Trailblazers’ head coach, noted the pair exhibited a strong work ethic in gearing up for the YRAA championships by practicing twice a week and did so well in advance of the YRAA championships.

“We knew we had some talent this year, but the competition was at its best and no match win came easy,” he said.

“To win the boys’ title though, was a great feeling.”

Zou and Ng will compete in the upcoming Ontario High School Invitational Tournament at My Table Tennis Club in Markham May 25.

Royals’ D-man commits to Manhattanville College Markham Royals’ defenceman Joel Knight will be patrolling the blueline next season and continuing his education at Manhattanville College, the Ontario Junior Hockey League club recently announced.

Also serving this past campaign as an assistant captain with the Royals, the 20-year-old Knight amassed four goals and 15 assists in 54 regular season games and added one goal and five assists in nine postseason tilts.

Knight joined the Royals when the club moved operations from Hamilton last season and played with them for two seasons.

Based in Purchase, N.Y., Manhattanville College is a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division Three program that competes in the Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division.

Former Waxers Jr. A coach earns OHA Coach of Year Mark Jooris, the last person to serve as head coach of the now defunct Markham Waxers junior A hockey club was named the 2015-16 Ontario Hockey Association Coach of the Year, the OHA announced Wednesday.

Currently serving as head coach and general manager of the Burlington Cougars of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, Jooris, 52, coached the Waxers for one season during the 2011-12 campaign.

During that season, Jooris directed the Waxers to a 30-17-1-162 during the regular season before they were eliminated in the division semifinals.

FERGUSSON, J. Blair (WWII RCAF Veteran) After a long battle with Alzheimer’s, passed away peacefully at Markham Stouffville Hospital on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 in his 97th year.

Beloved husband of Jessie (nee Talbot). Dear father of Jane (Frank) Berlin of Ottawa, Howard (Elaine) Fergusson of Toronto and Mary Lou (Craig) Birch of Langley, B.C. Loving grandfather of Damon (Marianka) Berlin, Lara (Michael) Butcher, Sarah (Ryan) Carlson, Jeremy (Elisa) Birch, Christopher Fergusson, Michael (Jessica) Fergusson and great grandfather of Katie, Matthew, David, Emily, Ethan, Raylan, Trevor and Tessa.

Friends will be received at the DIXONGARLAND FUNERAL HOME, 166 Main Street North, (Markham Road), Markham, Ontario on Friday, May 6, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Memorial Service in the Chapel at 11:00 a.m.
