If you need an ambulance, you’ll be pleased to hear York Region paramedics are getting to emergencies faster than ever, according to a recent report to our regional government.
In 2015, the region’s 550-plus paramedics transported about 74,000 patients to hospital. That’s up from 57,000 in 2010, the region’s Emergency Medical Services Chief Norm Barrette said. Between 2010 and 2015, 17,000 more people
called for an ambulance to take them to hospital, a jump of 30 per cent. Nine times out of 10, paramedics got to a patient’s side in 11 minutes and eight seconds in 2015. That is an improvement from 12 minSee AMBULANCE, page 11.

During the morning commute, every 10 minutes or so, a GTA driver can hear a report on the radio about traffic issues or incidents. But more often than not, the trouble is south of Steeles Avenue. The impact of just one incident on Hwy. 404 south of Steeles can be felt as far north as Newmarket, said Angela Gibson, head of performance, monitoring and research with York Region’s transportation services department. “The discussion about congestion is dominated by Toronto,” she said. “We always hear about things south of Steeles.” The region is hosting a free three-part, interactive discussion panel, Traffic Beyond the 6ix, tackling the issue of congestion and its impacts in an effort to come up with creative solutions. “We don’t have all the answers,” Gibson said. “We want to hear what the issues are for different residents using different modes of transportation. We want to hear their stories and how they respond to congestion.” Beyond the 6ix goes beyond looking at traffic signals, road widening and public transit. “This is not about just the nitty gritty traffic lights,” Gibson said. “This is about how congestion impacts the day-to-day.” The panel discussion will feature experts from various sectors discussing the impacts of congestion, including health care, academics, car insurance and transit. Several traffic and congestion studies have revealed residents in the region on average have one of the longest commute times, about 32 minutes one way. Congestion not only impacts quality of life, but also where people choose to live and work and where businesses choose to locate, Gibson added. The focus will be on finding and optimizing solutions, whether it be road tolls, car pool lanes or using automated cars. Another component is how technology and transportation can go hand-in-hand. Along with solutions, the region wants to learn how residents get information about local traffic issues – radio, traffic apps or realtime GPS notifications. Ideas stemming from the Traffic Beyond the 6ix series will be part of the region’s congestion management plan scheduled to be complete later in the fall.

A push to create a special task force to deal with second suites and rooming houses in Markham failed at city council. Last week, councillors voted down a proposal to establish a special sub-committee to establish a citywide second suites and rental unit policy – overturning a decision made at a recent committee meeting. Instead, issues about rooming houses, second suites, student housing and rental units will continue to come before development services committee. Deputy mayor and Regional Councillor argued this complex area of bylaws and zoning issues requires more dedicated time to sort out than allotted in regular committee meetings. Other councilors also expressed concern the issue would be bounced around from one packed agenda to another. Also, work on the issue would not continue through the summer break, losing valuable time.

ing house and rental units sooner rather than later. It’s a growing area of concern, especially since there are many rooming houses the city is unaware of. “Just because we don’t know of them doesn’t mean they don’t exist,” Heath said. Markham’s university campus is set to open for the 2020-21 school year and about 1,000 students are expected to attend the campus the first year. Currently, less than 10 per cent of York U. students at the Keele Street campus are housed on site. In previous committee meetings, York U. has expressed interest in working with the city and with developers to create special student zoning areas to build student housing. Markham’s rental unit and second suite strategy dates back to an earlier task force that started in 1999 and another task force in 2007 that continued to work on recommendations to 2009 – the last time Markham looked at a citywide second suite policy.

“This requires a lot more work,” said Heath, who pushed for a separate subcommittee with all 13 members of council similar to the city’s York University campus sub-committee. “And it’s detail work. There is a huge learning curve,” he said. “This is important to all of us.” Earlier this year, the province asked municipalities to look at zoning and bylaw policies in an effort to create more affordable housing. At the same time, the city is going through a comprehensive bylaw and zoning review for all of its bylaws. The review, which started last year, will look at bylaw redundancies and establish citywide bylaws with exceptions, instead of a collection of patchwork bylaws for one area and another dealing with the same issue. Shortly after the province made its request, Markham opted to expedite its bylaw review for rental units, rooming houses and second suites. With York U. on the horizon, the city needs a plan and policy for room-

Concern grows for rising risk of Lyme disease in York
T
here are so many health concerns to worry about that it may be tempting to ignore or downplay fears of Lyme disease. After all, news coverage with photographs of newborns with tiny heads in South America make us fear the Zika virus, especially with experts predicting it will make inroads in Florida and many southern states in the U.S. where many snowbirds spend their vacations. Yet Lyme disease is here — now — and has been called the “fastest growing infectious disease in Canada”. One researcher predicts that 80 per cent of the population in eastern and central Canada would be at risk of Lyme disease by 2020 because of climate change. Markham Stouffville MP, Dr. Jane Philpott, our minister of health, kicked off a national conference last week in Ottawa on developing a federal framework on Lyme disease — a national strategy to better prevent, diagnose and treat the disease. Sadly — and frighteningly — infected ticks that carry this debilitating, multi-symptom disease are here now, in York Region forests, parks and even private yards. How do we know this? Veterinarians in Aurora and other municipalities are finding infected ticks on pets. A Richmond Hill naturopath who specializes in helping patients with lyme disease is seeing an ever-growing number of people desperate for diagnosis and treatment. Stories posted to our website, such as heartbreaking features on a Thornhill woman who is convinced she picked up the disease from her own back garden, and another young student from Richmond Hill who started a blog to help others cope with symptoms, get huge reaction and “hits” — as did a story just a few weeks ago about an Aurora vet sounding the alarm. Nationally, 100 Lyme sufferers presented their own personal sto-

Marney Beck ries at the Federal Framework on Lyme Disease conference. They highlighted maddening battles to get diagnosed, or frustrating negative diagnoses by doctors in Canada. Many Lyme patients feel like “lepers” or say they are “ridiculed” by doctors who say their symptoms are all imagined. They told stories about how they couldn’t hold down a job or even leave the house because of symptoms that are debilitating or that sometimes mimic diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis. In York Region, we can take some comfort that regional health authorities are presenting a much stronger awareness campaign for residents under the ‘Fight the Bite’ theme. But some local experts say the region’s statement that there were “seven reported cases of Lyme disease in 2015 ... and all were found to be travel related” gives people enjoying our parks and forests a false sense of security. Those who take the trouble to read and follow the links for Lyme disease on the Region of York website will see that anyone who finds and removes a tick is encouraged to bring it to a public health office in Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill or Newmarket for testing. (Go to york.ca and click the links for ‘health’ and then ‘lyme disease’.) We all want to enjoy the great outdoors this spring and summer, but we all need to do so safely. An active regional Lyme group meets each month in York Region to share information and hear from experts; you can find the York North Lyme Group on Facebook or email yorknorthlymegroup@gmail.com.
Grave concerns about cemetery proposal Re: Grave space crunch hits home, Cemetery Special Report, May 12. I read with interest the articles on cemetery land use and the shortage concerns related to this now and in future. I would agree it’s not the most popular topic and one can see how it may not be key on the radar of planners of communities / municipalities, but it’s certainly something that needs to be addressed and planned for more effectively. What everyone may not be quite in tune with is the fact that there is big money in the cemetery and the business of dying. And where there is the potential for big money, comes big power and influence. Mentioned in the article is the firm Arbor Memorial which wishes to establish 50
acres of burial space, along with a large reception building, adjacent to my and my neighbours’ backyards. This project does not have the support of my community and neighbours unanimously. Hence the many concerns we have were brought to City of Markham officials, those officials agreed and the city has declined and not approved their application. Of real concern is that there is a process that can (and usually will) overturn and ignore what local communities and municipalities want, and that is via the Ontario Municipal Board. I get it that ideally the OMB (I believe) is in place to ensure if local governments/ municipalities squarely miss the mark and make poor decisions/get things really wrong, it has the power to review/ overturn etc. However in this specific case there are many concerns, environmental
(ground water / runoff), traffic (there are issues currently) and the fact we already have a cemetery in our neighbourhood/on the street. Big firms with big money and legal teams can defer items to larger OMB agendas and meetings over a long period of time, and get what they want in the end and it’s wrong. They can easily wait out a small homeowners association group who puts up a fight, and doesn’t have the funds to send a team to the Municipal Board to take them on. How is that if you don’t want something, your neighbours don’t, then your elected officials agree and support you, someone or some company is permitted to buy their way in? It hasn’t happened yet, although the defer and waiting game has begun.

Our community filled with activity this time of year
T
he month of May means that summer is quickly approaching and the school year will soon be ending. I enjoy this time of the year because our community is always filled with activity and I get to see so many of you when I am out and about. I participated in quite a few community events this month and I wanted to share some of these highlights with you. On May 3, I participated in the official opening of Fred Varley Public School in Markham. I’d like to thank Principal Lori Hall for inviting me to such a wonderful event. I’m pleased that our government helped make this special day possible by investing more than $12 million in the construction of this new school. MPP Helena Jaczek As we have about two million students in our publicly-funded Oak Ridges-Markham schools across the province, it is important for these students to have space and equipment for them to learn and grow. In fact, the Government of Ontario is providing school boards across the province with more than $11 billion over 10 years — to help build new schools in areas of high growth (like ours!), improve the condition of existing schools, and invest in projects to consolidate space where that’s appropriate. Since 2003 funding for schools in our community of Oak Ridges – Markham has increased by $1.1 billion, which represents an increase of 97 per cent, and we have built, retrofitted, consolidated and expanded more than 30 schools. That evening, I also had the pleasure of attending and speaking at the “FashionAble Gala” hosted by Participation House, Markham, in support of there “Let’s Build a Van Campaign.” The gala was an extra special event for me as I was able to attend in my capacity as both local MPP and Minister of Community and Social Services. I was particularly delighted to see the generosity of so many individuals and local community businesses supporting such a great cause. I would like to thank Frances Di Carlo, the executive director of Participation House, Markham, for inviting me to share in this wonderful event and event chair Jean – Ann Dodge for spearheading the occasion. For the past 30 years, the Canadian Mar Thoma Church in Markham has played an important role in our community, making positive contributions and being an important part of our multi-cultural mosaic. On May 7, I was honoured to attend the official cornerstone laying for the new Canadian Mar Thoma Church in Stouffville. I would like to thank Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma, the Metropolitan of the Mar Thoma Church for coming from Kerala, India, to officiate the ceremony and Reverend Shibu Samuel and Matthew Varughese for inviting me to attend. As always, if you require assistance with any provincial matter feel free to call or email my office at 905-294-4931 or hjaczek.mpp.co@liberal.ola.org.

Officers win award for Pan case By Jeremy Grimaldi
jgrimaldi@yrmg.com
Canada’s largest ever ketamine bust, one of the nation’s most intriguing murder trials and a child pornography investigation that spanned 17 countries were just three police probes feted at last week’s York Regional Police’s Appreciation Awards ceremony in Vaughan. It was November 2010 when operators received a call from a panicked Markham woman who reported she’d just seen her mother killed and her father shot in the head. Initially, police were led to believe she was the victim, however over the following year, they would uncover an intricate web of lies, deceit and more than one murder plot as they looked into Jennifer Pan’s background, which involved a man her parents didn’t approve of. In 2015, Pan, her former boyfriend, Daniel Wong, and their two associates Lenford Crawford and David Mylvaganam, were sentenced to 25 years in prison without parole. A fifth man, Eric Carty, was eventually sentenced to
18 years after pleading guilty to helping organize the hit. Homicide Det. Bill Courtice and Det. Al Cook received Excellence in Policing Awards at the dinner. Next were officers from the drugs and vice grow team, including Det. Doug Bedford, who managed to locate and bring down a clandestine drug operation containing drugs with a street value of $2.5 million and more than $400,000 cash. The April 2015 probe, dubbed Project Ice Castle, involved 150 officers from a number of agencies conducting 10 busts and locating chemicals used in the production of the date rape and party drug ketamine, which also doubles as a horse tranquilizer. Officers in York police’s ICE unit received their due for their role in Project Hydra, a child pornography investigation that started in York Region before spreading all over the world. In all, there were 57 arrests, 433 charges and five victims located as a result of the hard work of officers, including Det. Const. Brad Gallant.
Officers from across York gathered at Woodbridge’s Paramount conference also celebrated police involvement in the community. Insp. Lou Malbeuf, the former Sudbury Wolves’ goaltender, has raised more than $150,000 for charities across the region with a number of sporting events, including the annual Rob Plunkett softball tournament that benefits Special Olympics. Det. Const. Grayson Shillingford, the former Ottawa Renegade and Seattle Seahawk football player also accepted an award for community involvement, named after former York honorary Chief Herbert Carnegie. The officer, who joined York police in 2008, was celebrated for the role he plays in coaching football at King’s Villanova College and helping at-risk youth. Crime analyst Cliff Aguiar claimed the Leo McArthur Civilian Recognition Award for his work creating a LGBQT support network within the police with some 40 members and supporters and helping support York police’s Pride Parade float.
Ambulance response times lauded utes and 52 seconds in 2010. “Why we are really wanting to recognize the great work of York Region’s paramedics is that the need for paramedics has grown at the same time the effectiveness of achieving shorter response times has been successfully achieved,” Barrette said. “You put both of those factors together and… paramedics services in York Region is delivering exceptional services.” The decrease in response time is all the more impressive because paramedics are encountering more congestion on the roads, Barrette said.
‘Achieving shorter response times’ EMS has taken innovated steps to improve response times, including texting paramedics to guide them to patients more quickly, a public education campaign called #Get2UFaster that informs residents of the steps they can, such as pulling over for flashing lights, unlocking doors and clearing a path to the patient, to help paramedics respond more quickly to medical emergencies, reducing the amount of time it takes paramedics to transfer patients to hospitals’ care and expanding community paramedicine programs that reduce avoidable 911 calls. Calls to paramedics have increased during the last five years because the region’s
Believe in a love
population has increased and aged during that time. “As more and more residents enter into their senior years, then a higher percentage of the population has a higher probability of needing paramedics. That’s been the biggest driver,” Barrette said. “From 2011 to 2021, 49 per cent more residents will need to be transported to hospital by paramedics and the big component of that drive was the demographic shift, the growing population that will be moving into their senior years.” Regional chairperson Wayne Emmerson said he’s proud of “the exceptional performance” of the region’s paramedics. “By getting to emergency situations faster, they have a better chance of saving lives and better protecting our residents,” he said. “In situations of life and death, every second counts and our paramedics are surpassing expectations even though the number of calls is steadily going up.”
that is being stored up for you like an inheritance, and have faith that in this love there is a strength and a blessing so large, that you can travel as far as you wish without having to step outside it.

Five men have been arrested and charged in connection with a series of robberies in York and Peel regions. Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit, with the assistance of the Peel Regional Police Central Robbery Unit, made the arrests in connection with seven robberies in a four-month period that began Feb. 17. The suspects are believed to be responsible for robberies in Brampton, Markham and Vaughan. In each of the robberies, men - some of them armed with guns - entered either gas stations or convenience stores, making demands for cash, cigarettes and lottery tickets.
Suspects were identified with the assistance of video surveillance. On Friday, May 20, shortly after 4 a.m., officers arrested four men in a vehicle in front of a residence in Toronto, after they were suspected of committing a convenience store robbery in Brampton. Located in the vehicle were a loaded .22-calibre handgun and a replica firearm, police said. A fifth suspect turned himself in to police on Monday. Charged are Sagar Sharma, 19, of Toronto; Tegh Singh, 22, of Brampton; Charanjeet Singh Kler, 19, of Vaughan; Gurtej Dhaliwal, 18, of Brampton; and Ajay Sharma, 19, of Toronto. Charges include robbery with a firearm, disguise with intent and various weapons offences.

York Region is investing more than $14 million toward the construction of local hospitals. The funding is determined annually based on forecasted population growth and also the hospital’s ability to reduce the amount of time it takes to assume care of patients from paramedics, known as an off-load target. The region established a patient off-load target of 30 minutes with hospitals. The target is calculated from the time an ambulance arrives at the hospital with a patient to the time the ambulance leaves the hospital. In 2015, all three hospitals demonstrated improvements in meeting the target and will receive the full amount of funding under the
agreement. This year, the region will give the single largest contribution to Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital at almost $6.4 million. Mackenzie Health in Richmond Hill will receive more than $1.9 million. Markham Stouffville will receive more than $3.8 million and more than $2 million is slated for Southlake Regional Health Centre. “York Region is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Canada and we must do everything we can to ensure that quality health care is there for everyone, where and when they need it,” regional chairperson Wayne Emmerson said. “By working in partnership with our local hospitals, we are seeing an improvement in services, additional capital investments and an increased ability to serve more patients.” — Lisa Queen

Markham’s anti-whistle plans are on track, moving full speed ahead, with construction to start next spring. “It’s good to see progress,” deputy mayor and Regional Couniclllor Jack Heath said during this week’s general committee meeting. City staff put forward a report outlining work required at each of the 13 road-level rail crossings in the city. The report lists both mandatory safety upgrades as well as additonal upgrades to comply with anti-whistling guidelines. The total costs for all 13 rail crossing upgrades is $5.4 million, of which $1.94 million is to be paid for by Metrolinx, $2.2 million by the reigon and $1.26 million by Markham. The city is also calling on the region to implement a 24-hour antiwhistling bylaw for regional roads. Design plans have been put out for tender and a contract is expected to be awarded in the summer. City staff is working on agreements with Metrolinx and the region to share costs. Construction is expected to start next spring. There is some concern without a signed contract from Mextrolinx and the region, the project could drag on. There also was some concern about the closed sidewalk on the west side of Kennedy Road at the rail crossing north of Hwy. 7 – a project the city has been working on for some time. “People can’t use this section safely,” said Don Hamilton, the local councillor. “This has been going on and on and on.” This particular sidewalk connection was part of the city’s sidewalk gap budget, but now, with rail upgrades, the crossing requires four maze barriers to be installed. “We’re trying to aviod throwaway costs,” said the city’s engineering director, Alan Brown. The city is working with Metrolinx to advance work on this crossing to
the fall, since the sidewalk work was already budgeted, he added. The city has also partnered with Operation Life Saver to help with outreach and education of local residents and students. All crossings require pavement markings, new “no train whistle” or “do not stop on tracks” signs, sidewalk treatment and landscaping to clear sightlines. Another progress update is expected in the fall.
Cost breakdown: Costs include both upgraded safety and anti-whistle costs. • Major Mackenzie Drive – $34,700 – install two maze barriers; • Castlemore Avenue – $12,700; • Bur Oak Avenue – $816,700 – install four pedestrain gates with warning lights and bells; • 16th Avenue – $266,100 – grading work, install one pedestrian gate, four maze barriers, sidewalk and fence; • Main Street Markham – $66,400 – widen sidewalk and install four maze barriers; • Snider Drive – $55,950 – grading work, tree removal and install four maze barriers; • McCowan Road – $858,200 – grading work, install four pedestrian gates with lights and bells and four maze barriers; • Kennedy Road, north – $68,400 – continue sidewalk and install four maze barriers; • Main Street Unionville – $81,450 – grading work, install four maze barriers and a fence, hedge removal and clean up surrounding graffiti; • Eureka Street – $254,200 – widen and correct sidewalk, install two maze barriers and one pedestrian gate with lights and bells and clean up graffiti; • Hwy. 7 – $57,200 – install four maze barriers; • Denison Street – $672,700 – install sidewalk, three pedestrian gates with lights and bells and four maze barriers; • Kennedy Road, south – $854,200 – grading work, install four pedestrian gates with lights and bells and four maze barriers.

Motorcycle rider recovering following collision to avoid geese A man crashed his motorcycle while riding along a Thornhill street over the Victoria Day long weekend. The collision occured just after 7 a.m. Monday on John Street, close to Bayview Avenue, when the driver swerved to avoid geese in the road, according to York Regional Police. He was taken to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries, police said. The collision wasn’t the first time a goose and motorcyclist were involved in a crash. In June 2014, OPP officer Pete Tucker suffered serious injuries after he had an accident involving a goose. He was part of a training exercise in Barrie
along Hwy. 11 with about 14 other OPP motorcycles when the accident happened. Police believe the collision was the result of a goose hitting Tucker in the head. Tucker was rushed to hospital and spent close to two weeks in an induced coma, suffered a head injury, a lost leg and other complications. The Ministry of Transportation has suggestions for motorists who encounter animals: • Slow down and sound your horn. • Be alert for other animals that may be with the one you’ve seen. • Don’t try to drive around the animal. Animal movements are unpredictable. • If you hit a deer or moose, report it to police or the Ministry of Natural Resources. Do not try to move an injured animal. — Simone Joseph with files from TorStar News

Hospital puts focus on diversity to better serve patients By Amanda Persico
apersico@yrmg.com
Markham Stouffville Hospital wants to create a better patient experience for residents of all backgrounds. To fulfill that mission, the hospital has established an equity and inclusion collaborative to work as a diversity advisory committee. The collaborative – born from a hospital staff working group – is open to the community. The hospital is looking for those in the business sector, community services or those passionate about the role diversity plays in everyday life. Providing care is not just about medicine. It is about the whole patient experience, said hospital president and CEO Jo-anne Marr. “We want to create an awesome patient experience,” she said. “And we are in an extremely diverse community, in the broadest respect. That adds to the richness and uniqueness of the community.” The collaborative is meant to bring togeth-
er awareness, expertise and sensitivity about different cultural groups and traditions. “Our job is to provide care to patients,” said patient experience associate vice president Kate Wilkinson. “The more knowledge we have on how different groups see our role, the better the care.” The collaborative will provide insight related to equity, diversity and inclusion on strategic hospital initiatives. The hospital kicked off the initiative with a diversity, equity and inclusion fair, featuring a variety of cultural entertainment and activities, including Bollywood performances and percussion music. The hospital also installed a loom, to weave fabrics of the community together. “It’s a metaphor of what we’re trying to achieve,” Marr said. “All the fabrics and colours come together. It’s not perfect. It has ragged ends. But that’s life.” For more information or to apply to the Equity and Inclusion Collaborative, visit msh.on.ca

For Nicholas Chan, lifesaving is more than just sitting on an observation tower by a pool and making sure all swimmers are abiding by the rules and everyone is safe. As a member of the Rouge Valley Lifesaving Club, the 17-year-old Markham resident will put those lifesaving skills to the ultimate test, representing Canada as as part of a 12-member youth team competing at this year’s World Lifesaving Championships in The Netherlands in September. “It’s an insane feeling knowing that I get to be part of a team representing Canada at the international level,” the Grade 11 student at Markville Secondary School student said. Chan’s selection was based on a point system governed by the Lifesaving Society Sport Commission. Points are accumulated based on performances at provincial and national competitions in events based in the pool and on the waterfront. Events include towing plastic mannequins, beach sprinting and kayaking in the open water. Chan was quick to acknowledge his strength is on the waterfront. “Specifically, my events are surf ski race where a surf ski is a type of kayak, and beach flags… which is a little harder to explain. In this event the goal is to come away with a flag, but there are only say 11 flags for 12 athletes, sort of like musical chairs. Athletes start lying stomach down facing away from the flag. When they blow the whistle, you have to get up, turn around, and sprint for a flag.” Chan speculated his selection to the team stemmed from his performance in those two events at last year’s national competition in Halifax. During that competition, Chan finished second in the surf ski race and beach flags competition. He was also fifth in a 90-metre beach
sprint. “I’m not an amazing swimmer compared to the other guys on this team, in fact I’m probably the slowest swimmer on the team,” he conceded. “But I think they wanted a sprinter and skier on the team so we could get as many points as possible.” While Chan performed well at last year’s nationals, it wasn’t until last week when he was surprised to learn he made the team. “I only found out when one of my friends messaged me on Facebook late Sunday (May 14). It went something like, ‘Congrats on making the team’” “Making the team? What team? I asked.” “You’re going to The Netherlands,” he said. “What?” I responded in disbelief. “Yeah it was very spontaneous and it really blindsided me. Suffice to say that I was really surprised,” he recalled. With some 40 countries participating at the last world championships in France two years ago, Chan anticipates their team will face a bit of a handicap on going up against teams that have beach activities almost year round. In those countries, he said lifeguarding is almost a year-round occupation whereas in Canada it’s just part time. “I don’t know about the pool, but for waterfront and the beach, we’re at a disadvantage because it’s always so cold here. Our beach season is only two and a half months long. Australians, Americans, the Japanese, even some of the Europeans, they can all have full year seasons to train outdoors,” he noted. Taking that into account, Chan said he’s been training diligently. Not just in the water, but in the gym as well. That’s why I’m trying to train like crazy in the months leading up to the competition. It’s a combination of going to the gym, running, kayaking, and swimming,” he said. If Canada is to contend for the title, Chan said teamwork will be essential, as each team member was chosen for a specific event or skill set.

Simple tips to update your outdoor living space Are you looking for simple ways to refresh your backyard? Spring is the perfect time to tackle projects and get your outdoor living space ready for sunny days and starry nights. Debbie Travis, Canada’s lifestyle expert, who recently launched a partnership with Sears Canada, shares her tips on how to easily create a functional outdoor living space with a luxurious ambiance. Do a full spring sweep: Put away everything and decide what you really like. Create a mixture of one or two high quality items or vintage pieces that carry sentimental value. “It’s important to be ruthless when eliminating items that don’t work,” shares Travis. “Right now, it’s all about being minimalistic, so starting with a clean slate will help you achieve the look.” Get rid of many smaller items and use fewer, larger pieces to keep it simple.” Think functionality: Multifunctional furniture is a necessity. “Innovative materials and exotic forms promote dual-purpose de-

sign in furniture and accessories. Think ottoman coffee tables and reversible pillows. It’s all about items that make our day-to-day lives easier,” she says. “Fast-drying patio cushions are one of my favourite multi-purpose pieces. They make it easy to get back outside quickly after a sun shower.” For the perfect combination of style and performance, Travis suggests her fast-drying reversible accent or highback cushions at Sears. The pièce de résistance: Add-
ing an outdoor carpet, serving trays or portable lanterns are simple and affordable ways to redefine your backyard. “Accessories like cheerful cushions and tableware give you the opportunity to play around with different texture and colour combinations,” says Travis. This year, try adding a water-resistant bar cart topped with outdoor friendly barware, such as tumblers, pitchers and goblets to elevate your space and impress your guests.

Stunning Century Home (Circa 1880) In Heart Of Unionville $2, 979 ,00 0
Maximize your basement’s potential If today’s real estate market has you frazzled, a home renovation project may be just the right answer. With house prices on the rise, finishing a basement is the latest trend towards building even more equity in the home. A finished basement can offer a little extra room to give a growing family space to breathe, and with so many uses, a renovated basement may be the exact solution to what your home is missing. It can provide additional storage space, a sound-proofed media room, craft room, guest room, or income suite. The possibilities are endless. Here are some tips on how to give your basement a 180-degree makeover: Waterproof it. Check the interior foundation and floors to make sure there are no existing moisture issues, water damage or mold problems. Address any primary moisture issues before finishing the space. Examine grading to ensure water runs away from your foundation. Soundproof it. Installing acoustic insulation is the perfect excuse to crank up the subwoofer, host a get-together or let the kids run wild. Soundproofing is the ultimate solution to maximize your basement’s peace, quiet and privacy. Industry experts suggest using Roxul Safe n’ Sound, which effectively absorbs sound and is easy to work with.
Add or replace flooring. Installing a new floor can improve the overall comfort level and look of your basement. Vinyl, laminate, ceramic tile, and engineered hardwood are great options. Say no to carpet, which can harbour mold and allergens, particularly in the basement, and don’t forget to lay a subfloor. Add Colour. Transform the dull and boring space into an inviting oasis or a colourful playroom with a simple coat of paint. If your basement has low ceilings or limited natural light, choose lighter, warmer tones to brighten the space. To add some drama, consider adding depth and visual interest to your space with a different coloured accent wall. Accessorize it. Throw pillows, rugs, lighting, and artwork are simple additions that can immediately enhance or change your basement’s look and feel. Pot lights can modernize, while art work and throw pillows can add a splash of colour. Accessories are really an opportunity to make it your own and let your personality shine through. They also provide an inexpensive way to keep your space looking fresh from year to year.

Cherry Webster loved by students, friends
By Teresa LaTchford tlatchford@yrmg.com
C
herry Webster’s notes will continue to ring true in the hearts of those who knew her. To some, she was a loving wife and devoted mother of two. To others, she was a dedicated teacher and the community will remember her forever as the organist who played at the Ray Twinney Complex during Newmarket Saints games. She was an energetic and encouraging spirit who will never be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to have crossed her path. “She was a unique person,” her husband, Bill, said. “She was mystifying, talented, smart, funny and shared my love for music.” They first met at the “Jolly” Miller Tavern in Toronto more than four decades ago. Both were musicians and teachers who were just beginning their careers. It was only six months later that the couple married. In 1974, the couple moved to Newmarket, a move they called the great white north at the time. Over the years, Cherry taught pri-
mary and junior grades, music, special needs children and French at Park Avenue Public School, at schools in Aurora, but spent the majority of her time at Prince Charles Public School in Newmarket. “The students who needed most, just gravitated toward her because of her empathy and because she was so giving,” he added. “She was just an amazing person in everything she did.” Cherry juggled her teaching career, raising her children, Darryl and Kim, and teaching private piano lessons. On top of that, she decided the Newmarket Saints games needed a certain spice so, for every game, she would lug her equipment, plus her children, to the second floor of the recreation complex to rev up players and fans. “I still meet people today who knew my mom as the Leafs’ farm team organist,” Darryl said. “I have been to some faraway places and people know who my mother was; a beautiful person.” But closer to home, he remembers his mother being someone who always put everyone else first, almost to a fault, as he wonders if she ever had time for herself. When he was 12,
he attended a goalie school in Orillia, but was too shy to spend the night at the camp, so his mother crammed his hockey equipment into her IROC Z28 at 5 a.m. three times a week to allow him to have the experience. “She would encourage any idea we had,” he laughed. “I wanted to travel with a band that made no money and she never discouraged me.” When his sister, Kim, moved to Manchester, Cherry never discouraged her and remained close with her daughter. Cherry always enjoyed travelling to see her daughter and felt very much at home there. Her empathy for others began well before her family was established or before she became a teacher. When her classmates were choosing to go to Paris as part of French studies, she went to Africa where she could do mission work on top of teaching French. In addition to her other talents, Cherry had written a children’s book, but had never done anything with it until she was diagnosed with a brain tumour that claimed her life in April. With help from her family, the book, The Amazing Adventures of Squeaky and Vashy, has been published. The family is currently working on
Track standout headed to Maryland BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA
mhayakawa@yrmg.com
When Dallyssa Huggins began to compete in track and field she was in pursuit a dream. While the 17-year-old Markham resident would like nothing more than to represent Canada where she currently competes in the heptathlon along with several other individual events at a future Summer Olympics down the road, she had a short-term objective. Just recently, the Grade 12 Bill Crothers Secondary School student successfully ran it down. Starting this fall it will take Huggins south of the border to College Park, Md., where she signed her letter of intent to attend school and continue her track and field career as a member of the University of Maryland Terrapins track and field team. “It (obtaining a scholarship) has been my goal since I started doing track, but it always seemed so far away,” an elated Huggins said. “Once the recruiting started, time seemed to pass very quickly and I can’t believe I’ll be graduating very soon. “Only a few months of summer and I’ll be starting a new phase in my life. I’m nervous and anxious at the same time.”
A gold medalist in the senior girls’ 400m hurdles with a personal best time of 1:00.43 and earning a silver in the senior girls’ high jump during last year’s Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships, Huggins said the University of Maryland’s interest in her began when she competed at OFSAA as a Grade 10 student. Commencing communications with them later that summer, Huggins said the University of Maryland returned to watch her compete at last year’s OFSAA championships along with the Canadian championships in Edmonton and New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. While the University of Maryland kept tabs on what Huggins did, so too did other major U.S. universities who in turn made their sales pitch to her. “It was so hard,” Huggins conceded. “Just to narrow it down to a few schools for official visits was difficult. Then to select my final destination after visiting campuses and actually meeting coaches and team members was the hardest part. Everyone was so nice and it was much harder than I thought it would be. I felt really bad having to call the other coaches to tell them that I wouldn’t be coming.”
In choosing Maryland where she will compete as a heptathlete and possibly do some individual events, including the high jump, 800m, 400m, 400m hurdles and possibly long jump, Huggins said several factors came into play to where she felt she would have the best opportunity to obtain a good education and continue to progress as an athlete. Foremost, she revealed, was the school’s academic reputation where she’s leaning on majoring in broadcast journalism or possibly kinesiology and sports management. Huggins was also impressed with the campus and its layout as she noted it will be easy for her to go to and from training to her classes and residence. With the University of Maryland track and field team coached by a former Olympian in Andrew Valmon, who served as a USA Olympic head coach and was a gold medalist with the men’s 4 x 400m relay teams in the 1992 and 1998 Olympics, Huggins felt his Olympic resume will be highly beneficial in her aspirations to someday compete in the Olympics. The university will also have a sports science diagnostic lab later this year.
organizing a life celebration to be held in August. “We want the celebration to be as unique as she was,” Bill said. It will be a celebration with music and memories to pay tribute to a life that was taken too soon. Cherry Webster was a bright light in many people’s lives: “She was my first teacher when I started at Prince Charles, she made me feel comfortable and she was one of the best teachers I had. “I still think of her often and, like a lot of others, have mentioned I, too, still use her songs to help aid my own children in their mathematical journey.”
—Melanie Walsh-Boland “I wouldn’t have survived my first few years of teaching at Park Avenue without her as a mentor and shining guide. She was such a dedicated and hard-working teacher. Her sensitivity to others, enthusiasm, positive approach, creativity and kindness were appreciated by everyone.” —susan collett
I still remember, to this day, the songs she taught us to help with math. “I have also used these to help teach my children. I remember days of going to the Newmarket Saints hockey games and being more excited that my teacher was the musician playing on her keyboard. Thank you for the wonderful memories. You will never be forgotten.”
“Mrs. Webster was my Grade 4 teacher and a teacher I will never forget.
— Jennifer Gillison

Maxime Brinck-Croteau, a 30-year-old native of Amos, Que., who operates the Vango Fencing Centre in Markham will be representing Canada at the Summer Olympics in men’s epee, the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Fencing Federation announced. A silver medallist in the individual epee at the 2015 Pan American Championships while competing with an infected plantar wart on his foot and making his senior FIE World Championship debut that same year, Brinck-Croteau punched his ticket into the Olympics directly through the International Fencing Federation’s individual Olympic qualification process. Olympic fencing will take place at the Carioca Arena 3, Aug. 6-14.
Girls in sync at age group championships The Markham Synchronized Swimming Club sent four provincial teams, two duet entries and two solo performers to the pool at the 2016 Ontario Open Age Group Championships in Nepean last weekend. With over 800 athletes and coaches representing 24 clubs in Canada’s largest synchronized swimming competition, the local club recorded positive results. In team final results, the 10 and under team claimed the bronze medal. Lee wins bronze in para-badminton Joanne Lee won the bronze medal in the singles’ competition Friday at the inaugural Canadian ParaBadminton Championships in Moncton. Entered in the Wheelchair Singles division, the 17-yearold Markham resident competed against athletes from New Brunswick, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario. A Grade 12 student at Unionville High School who has cerebral palsy, Lee finished behind gold medallist Bernard Lapointe of St. Leonard, N.B., and silver medallist Luke Millar of Calgary. In addition to Wheelchair Singles, medallists were decided in Lower Body Singles and Short Stature. The championships marked the first step for competitors who hope to compete at the 2020 Paralympics Games in Tokyo as the International Paralympic Committee announced that para-badminton was selected as one of the sports for the Games. Last year, Lee became the first Canadian player to claim a gold medal in international parabadminton. Lee did it in a mixed doubles wheelchair event with partner Rudolf Cano of Brazil at the inaugural Peru Para International event. — Michael Hayakawa
