York Region runs the risk of creating too much higher-density residential development and driving traditional family housing to other communities if it pursues an intensification model that is too aggressive, a major developer says.

As the region works toward a preferred growth scenario next spring that will create a blueprint to accommodate an additional 700,000 residents by 2041, regional planning staff are advocating for a 45-per-cent intensification scenario. That would balance good planning policies that discourage urban sprawl with market

housing demands, the region’s chief planner, Val Shuttleworth, said. But while she said changing demographics, a desire among some residents for a more urban lifestyle and high housing prices are already resulting in new housing types, David See FAMILY, page 3.

Markham city officials held a meeting last night, after the Economist & Sun’s deadline, related to the voluntary merger of the locally controlled electrical distributor PowerStream with other similar distributors in the GTA and Hamilton. A final vote is expected next week. Is it a good move for Markham? How will it impact you as a taxpayer, power user or even as an Ontario resident? You can read more about the issue online on our website, yorkregion.com

Markham casts vote for voting-in chair apersico@yrmg.com

A majority of Markham councillors have voted in favour of electing the York Region chairperson. A motion, put forward by ward councillor Karen Rea, puts the city’s support squarely behind Bill 42 and calls on the province to get the ball moving in time for the 2018 municipal election. The motion passed 9-4 in a recorded vote. Councillors Alan Ho, Don Hamilton, Karen Rea, Colin Campbell, Logan Kanapathi and Alex Chiu along with Regional Councillors Jim Jones, Joe Li and Nirmala Armstrong voted in favour. Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Regional Councillor Jack Heath and Thornhill Councillor Valerie Burke voted against the motion. Councillor Amanda Collucci abstained, which under the Municipal Act counts as a vote against. Rea’s motion goes hand-in-hand with Li’s motion at the regional level, to be debated Nov. 19. In order to change the makeup of regional council, a triple majority is required. That means, a majority of regional council, a majority of municipalities and of those municipalities, they must represent a majority of York Region residents.

Markham as a whole represents about a third of York Region’s population. “How can we spend billions of dollars to promote the democratic system in the Middle East but still practice hypocrisy in our backyard,” Li said. “We have to lead by example.” There is growing support in the region, with motions coming before Whitchurch-Stouffville, Aurora and Richmond Hill local councils, he added. During a debate on Rea’s motion, the current system of appointing the regional chairperson was referred to as a small circle of voters where back-door trading takes place.

Push agendas “We hear a lot of ‘You support me on this and I support you on that’ type of deals,” said Robert Mok, representing the Markham Citizens Coalition for Responsive Government. “This is just a way for mayors and councillors to push their own agendas. We need to eliminate the horse trading.” Others disagreed. “More elections doesn’t improve democracy,” said resident León Drummer. It was suggested electing a

chairperson opens up a pandora’s box when it comes to campaign support, which could come from special interest groups and developers. Regional Councillor and deputy mayor Jack Heath agreed. Having a regional chairperson backed by heavy development could pose a problem since the region does not deal with issues such as parks or greenspace. But local mayors are also supported by development, argued Regional Councillor Nirmala Armstrong. There has been movement to eliminate local powers over items such as planning, waste management, fire services and water and wastewater, Heath argued. “Government should be close to the people,” he said. “We don’t want these services to disappear. There would be a power shift from Markham to the region.” But other councillors argued power already sits in the hands of the chairperson, so the position should be made accountable. “The chairperson is a nobody before regional council appoints him,” said Regional Councillor Jim Jones. “Then he becomes the most powerful politician. If he’s elected, he can’t kowtow to any member of (regional) council.”

From page 1.

Stewart argues the demand for traditional family homes isn’t going away any time soon. “Family households are expected to drive demand for housing into the foreseeable future,” the vice-president of TACC Developments told a committee meeting on potential growth scenarios. “The 45 per cent (intensification) target will force the housing market too aggressively toward higher density residential development and may force lower density housing to relocate to areas outside of the region where such high intensification targets do not exist.”

“The concern we have with the 45 per cent is it doesn’t appear to have any kind of science behind it” Representing a dozen landowners in Markham and East Gwillimbury, Don Given, president of Malone Givens Parsons Ltd., one the largest planning consulting firms in Canada, agreed. “The concern we have with the 45 per cent is it doesn’t appear to have any kind of science behind it,” he said. “If there is one thing you have to do as a council and the legacy you leave is to create good communities. We can all talk about density and policies and all the analysis, but what you will be remembered for is the form of the community.” As mandated by the provincial government, the region is being made to plan for a population that will grow to almost 1.8 million residents by 2041, up from 1.1 million today, Shuttleworth said. The number of jobs in the region will increase from 565,000 to 900,000. The question is where to put everyone amid competing financial, social and environmental interests. The public tends to favour no

expansion of the urban boundary, although that doesn’t mean there won’t be growth, as there is no option to simply reject the provincial forecasts. Instead, it means significant intensification in already established communities. Jim Robb, general manager with Friends of the Rouge Watershed, urged councillors not to expand the urban boundary for several years until they can assess the environmental, social and economic impact of development already in the works. In addition to the no urban expansion scenario, the region’s planning staff had looked at intensification models of 50 per cent and the provincially mandated minimum of 40 per cent. At last Thursday’s committee meeting, planning staff recommended the 45 per cent intensification model, based in part on a report from Hemson Consulting Ltd. that recommended intensification of between 40 and 50 per cent after it researched future housing demands. While planning isn’t an exact science, the 45 per cent intensification target is a good compromise between good planning and market demands, Paul Bottomley, manager of policy, research and forecasting, said. “It’s not about the number, it’s about striking a balance”, he said. Intensification doesn’t only mean building skyscrapers, Shuttleworth added. It means all kinds of infill development, such as converting former golf courses into housing, she said. But some regional politicians appear leery of adopting a growth scenario with too much intensification. For example, Aurora has a condo building at Yonge and Wellington streets where many units have remained unsold for about five years, Mayor Geoff Dawe said. If single family homes had been built instead, they would have been snapped up immediately, he said. “The sense I get from our residents is they are not looking for that kind of intensification.”

Here’s why I didn’t vote

Director, Advertising Maureen Christie

I did not vote in last election on principle, that’s why this column struck a nerve. I certainly would cast my vote for a Libertarian if I had an opportunity to do so but, alas, my options were reduced to choosing the proverbial lesser evil. Let’s get right to the point of my comment: the author claims “we had 338 elections going simultaneously, in 338 Canadian ridings”. That might had been true 100 years ago, but not anymore. In those days Richmond Hill was a close community and residents actually knew who they voted for — through the local paper or town gossip or firsthand. These days many of us don’t know who lives next door, let alone our candidates. People mostly get news from TV channels, Internet or radio. And who is in the news and the commercials? Harper, Trudeau and Mulcair. That’s why our elections morphed into a very strange event: we don’t elect our representatives (we don’t know them), not even by parties (we don’t know them, either), but anointed leaders of parties who managed to nominate their proxies in our ridings. It is basically a direct nationwide vote for the leader of the country — with one disturbing detail: votes cast for candidates who did not finish first in a given riding go straight into the garbage bin. This skews the outcome and allows an overwhelming majority with less than 40 per cent of popular vote. My favourite example is from United Kingdom elections this year: the Scottish National Party scored 4.7 per cent of the popular vote and secured 56 seats, whereas UKIP (Independence Party) with 12.6 per cent of votes got only one seat and Sinn Fein party with 0.6 per cent of votes has four seats. Doesn’t this outcome polarize and divide society? Thanks to technological progress, these days people increasingly communicate and converge on values and principles, not based on their addresses. That’s why the Westminster system is not only antiquated, but is outright regressive and divisive.

Merry holiday to you In the Economist and Sun last week the flyers were mostly geared to the coming December Holiday celebration.

Pete Deboran MARKHAM

Don’t drive away best doctors

When I was a child I used to wish for toys in the Eaton’s Holiday catalogue. I so enjoyed decorating our family’s Holiday tree and hanging up our Holiday stockings. At school we would make Holiday decorations and sing Holiday carols. My Dad would climb a ladder and put Holiday lights on our house. Neighbourhood mothers would make Holiday cookies and cakes. We used to love to go down town and marvel at the beautiful department store Holiday windows. I looked forward every year to watching Rudolph and Frosty Holiday specials on TV. But as a child my favorite memory was the excitement of Holiday Eve when our parents let us open just one of our Holiday presents from underneath the Holiday tree. By the way, if this letter sounds ridiculous to you now you know how I feel. Please use the proper word this season, Christmas! It’s not offensive and for some, yes,it has religious meaning and to others it’s just about Santa. Why do we need to disguise our celebration and generically refer to Christmas time as “Holiday time”? I find the substitution of the word Holiday for Christmas extremely offensive and would expect that tolerance of my traditions should be respected. Please support my tradition this year and say Merry Christmas, loud and proud!

Resuscitate our foreign policy We now have a government that professes to renew our international standing as an honest broker of peace and democracy. I hope this is true because the world needs Canada’s help. Too many countries are allowing politics to trump over justice and basic human rights. People are being tortured, forcibly removed from their homes, starved out of their traditional lands, and forbidden to congregate together, while others are spied on by phone, email and satellite. Despite the sound bites of these oppressors which repeatedly echo the words “democracy” and “freedom,” we know (or should know) that these same countries are doing the exact opposite of what they say; and in the process are creating more terror and despair. The millions who are marching in the streets all over the world only to be met with savage beatings and death, are showing us vividly how much they value democracy, human rights and social justice - with the sacrifice of their lives. The International Criminal Court must be supported in an objective and meaningful way to ensure that all human rights violators, no matter the leadership or their relationship to Canada, are made accountable for their actions. One example that deserves our focus is the investigation of possible war crimes by the former Sri Lankan

With unilateral cuts to doctors’ fees continuing under the Liberal Kathleen Wynne government, the Ontario Medical Association has been forced to launch a Charter challenge to ensure reasonable and binding service agreements. This is not greed. Family physicians, such as my doctor, have significant staffing and overhead costs. Unilateral cuts ignore these costs. Our population is aging. Frontline medical care is critical. Let our government not drive away the best and the brightest who serve us so well.

Don’t want to sit waiting Re: Seniors’ task force: What do older residents need?: bit.ly/1knoF0g Thank you for your very timely article on York’s aging population. However, not everything requires massive spending. Simple things such as maintaining doorto-door mail service and making sure there is an option to speak to a person when you call a business or government are simple things that improve seniors’ lives every day. As a junior senior, I recently spent 3-1/2 hours on the phone and another four waiting for a call back just to be told “get your grandkids to check for you on the Internet” when I recently tried to find out the balance on my mother’s AirMiles points. She is 90 and doesn’t have the Internet. Just because people are retired doesn’t mean they want to wait.

o you get the idea we are too conservative as a province, a country, a society, when it comes to ideas to change how we live? I have to admit I’m always fascinated by how other places do things to try to get us to use resources in a better way. I’m not talking about social engineering that punishes people for their behaviour. I’m thinking more of ideas that “incentivize” us to do things differently. For instance, most of us in the GTA get a minor discount for doing our laundry or running the dishwasher during off-peak hours — as in evenings, weekends. My informal poll of people I know says most are highly skeptical of the alleged “off-peak” savings. In the grand scheme of things you may save a few dollars a month, but the tradeoff is quite a bit of inconvenience at home, was their take on it. Meanwhile even the cheap rate keeps going up. Not that we don’t all want to treat the planet a little better than we have been doing. But when the clothes you wanted to wear aren’t clean or there’s yesterday’s food stuck on today’s dishes (for the record, in my house we wash our dishes in the sink, ASAP) or worse — you feel you have to sit up late making sure the washing machine doesn’t overflow, the dryer does not catch fire — the savings don’t seem worth it. Meanwhile, in Texas, more than 50 small electrical utilities are giving away nighttime power for free. According to the New York Times, utilities generate so much unused wind power at night, they Bernie O’Neill are simply letting people use electricity at no charge after 9 p.m. and before 6 a.m., saving customers who take advantage $40 to $50 a month and curbing the demand for power during the day — essentially spreading out use of the electrical supply, which is always available but which also has a limit, whether it be wind, solar, nuclear. (It’s hiking that capacity that is so costly.) How can Texas do this and we can’t? For one thing, there is a free market and intense competition for customers (the opposite of what is happening here in Ontario) giving them reason to give people deals to become customers (also opposite of here, where there is no choice, it’s all regulated). So will you ever get free electricity in York Region? Probably not. Too radical an idea for these parts (and here you thought Texas was conservative). And the utilities themselves have no incentive to do it. I have a son who volunteered at the Pan Am Games, one of that army of young and old decked out in orange shirts who helped the rather costly Games happen. His reward? He got his high school volunteering hours, met some interesting people (if you were, in a gentlemanly way, kicked out of the athletes/officials parking at the a Pan Am venue it may have been my son who kicked you out), but he also got to ride transit for free, something I heard more than a few people remark on as being almost unbelievable as a perk. It certainly was a boon for Dad, who did not need to transport him by car. But it also turned him on to being a transit user, which previously he was not. The move kept a lot of cars off the road, and put a lot of people on buses that were running anyway. So, should students, seniors, moms with babies, all get to ride for free? Better yet, will the day ever come when anyone can ride transit for free? I’m not sure. It’s not cheap to run. At the same time, the day may come when it’s cheaper to let thousands ride transit at no charge than to add a new lane to a highway, or build a new road. In the same way health care is “free” (paid for by taxes), you have to wonder if road congestion, pollution and commute times are all such concerns, more daring actions will be taken to “incentivize” us to change. For now, at least, I’m still driving.

orry to say so, but the cold weather is around the corner. While it brings the joy of running from home, to car, to office, to car and back to home, it also brings with it the increased risk of falling. Serious injuries from falls happen more often than you may think. According to the 2009 Ontario Trauma Registry Report of Major Injuries, unintentional falls account for 37.7% of all major injury hospitalizations and 44% of all major injury-related deaths. Falling is the second highest causeofmajorinjurybehind automobile collisions. For men and women the number of falls increases with advancing age. So how much do ice and snow contribute to these statistics? According to the Canadian Institute for

Health Information’s 2013 and 2014 Injury and Trauma Hospitalization Quick Stats, 66.4% of winter activity-related injuries are due to falls on ice between 2013 and 2014, there were 1,625 women and 1,496 men who slipped on ice in Ontario and went to the hospital for their injuries. What can you do about it? Wearing winter boots is a good start to prevent falls on snow. Their deep treads grab the snow and leverage snow’s properties of mechanical interlock, adhesiveness and cohesiveness. However, winter boots will not likely prevent you from falling on ice. In cases where a person slips and falls, I have hired engineers to perform slip tests, comparing the difference between the sole of a boot on ice and the sole of a running shoe on ice. There is very little difference. For a person to walk without slipping, there must be friction between the bottom of the footwear and the walking surface. The less friction there is, the slipperier it is. Engineers call this measurement the coefficient of friction. Normal walking requires a coefficient of friction of 0.25 to prevent slipping, while jogging, running or making a sharp turn while walking requires a coefficient of friction of approximately 0.4 to prevent a slip. Ice, when tested with rubber soles, typically has a coefficient of friction of approximately 0.15, which is very slippery, as every Canadian knows. On wet ice, for example, testing I had performed showed that winter boots

and running shoes both produced a coefficient of friction of 0.08. So on ice, its like you only have 8 cents worth of traction and you need 25 cents to take a step. For those who are older, for whom the risk of falling is greaterandtheconsequence of falling is more severe, consideration should be given to purchasing ice cleats that fit over shoes or boots. They cost approximately $30 or less. Property owners and businessownersshouldtake care to get rid of ice where people walk. Not only is there a moral obligation to care for those who enter your properties, but the Occupier’s Liability Act imposes a duty on property owners to take reasonable steps to keep your property reasonably safe. Here is a secret I learned from reading municipal winter maintenance guidelines and training documents: while salt can be used to melt ice away, it is far more effective when used to prevent ice from forming in the first place. Consider this, 1 cm of ice covering 1 km of roadway weighs 65 tonnes and requires 16 tonnes of salt to melt it. That’s 3 full truckloads to salt 1 km of roadway. Compare that to the 130 kg of salt that it would take to prevent the ice from bonding to the pavement, allowing it to be ploughed off. That’s a ratio of more than 100:1. It’s more than 100 times more effective to prevent ice from forming than to melt it and it is more cost effective, too. And significantly less expensive than a lawsuit.

City to spend $500,000 on golf course irrigation

The city of Markham is expected to spend nearly $500,000 for a new sprinkler system for a golf course. Markham Green Golf Course on Rouge Bank Drive was originally opened in 1950, later to be sold to IBM which operated it until 1992. That’s when the majority of the property was re-zoned for development and the valley portion of the course was conveyed to the city. The city leases the course out to an operator, but under the agreement is responsible for maintaining the irrigation system, according to a report that came before the city’s general committee on Monday. The current irrigation system was installed in 1975 with PVC pipe and has outlived the typical 30-year lifespan that is par for such a system. Control system components and repair parts have not been available for 15 years. The new system would not require digging and is a specifically designed for the golf industry. Work would be completed by December.

Auditor-general $150K Markham will spend $150,000 a year to a firm to serve as auditor general on a contract basis the next four years, based on a committee recommendation. The city first hired an auditor general in 2008, but the person left for another job in 2010 and the position has since remained vacant. In April, the city announced it was moving to fill the role again and after a study of possible options has chosen to outsource the task. MNP LLP, the fifth largest business advisory and chartered a accountancy firm in Canada, has been chosen to serve as the city’s auditor at a cost of $152,640 a year. “The Auditor General role assists council in holding itself and its administrators accountable for the quality of stewardship over public funds and for the achievement of value for

money in operations,” a city report states.

Love, loss and fortune in Markham Little Theatre’s The Heiress BY Barbara Clifford

The year is 1850, a time of status, societal norms and expectations. We are transported into the sumptuous grand drawing room of the very wealthy and widowed Dr. Austin Sloper. He shares his elegant Washington Square home with his only child, Catherine, his somewhat meddling sister, Lavinia Penniman, and his faithful and devoted housekeeper, Maria. Emotionally detached and domineer-

ing, Dr. Sloper (played by Terry Browne) has always blamed his daughter for the loss of his wife, who died during childbirth. Catherine (played by Kate O’Hearn) is emotionally arrested, painfully shy and socially awkward, traits borne out of years of condescension and constant reminders she is but a “flawed image” of her late mother, always falling short, in all things that matter to him: beauty, intelligence, talent, charm. A dashing young suitor, Morris Townsend

CATHOLIC FRENCH IMMERSION PROGRAMS

(played by D’Arcy Vachon), comes to visit. Soon his beguiling charm and ardent interest in Catherine causes this fragile flower to blossom in a dizzying, whirlwind courtship. The bitter Dr. Sloper, however, deems Townsend a “fortune hunter”. Caught between the demands of her father and the attentions of a suitor, Catherine must navigate this uncharted territory of love, loss and the burden of fortune in The Heiress, a drama by Ruth and Augustus Goetz Beautifully appointed, this production will have you salivating...the lushness of silk and satin, sweeping draperies, high ceilings,

complete with staircase and columns. The costumes are sublime, the lighting magical, and the gorgeous sound design evocative of the times and temperament within this family. Director Michèle Browne, with a dream team cast and crew, has created a production you will want to see it again and again. The Heiress, by Markham Little Theatre, Nov. 18-21 8 p.m. at Flato Markham Theatre. Tickets: adults, Wed,Thurs: $24, Fri, Sat: $ 26. Seniors $20/students $10, Special group rate 10+. Weather co-operates as PET grabs high school cricket crown BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

During the York Region Athletic Assoc. cricket season, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Trailblazers’ attributed the majority of their wins to the work of their batsmen. But when they took to the Markham Reservoir pitch to play the Bur Oak Bears for this year’s YRAA championship, their batsmen recorded their lowest output of the season with 69 runs. For the Trailblazers, though, there was no need to panic, as the defending champion Bears, who won the coin toss and elected to field first before going to bat, generated just 59 runs. With that, the Trailblazers captured their second title in the last three years and avenged losing last year’s loss in the final to the Bears. “It certainly was an exciting game,” said an elated Trailblazers coach Graham Baker. “All season long we’ve scored plenty of runs, but in this game (the final) it was the lowest score for us all year.” Baker felt the key to their success was their ability to execute in all facets of the game. “We bowled well and we fielded well as a team. It was the best we’ve done all year,” he said. Entering this season in a league

which expanded with two new entries to make it a 10-team loop, Baker felt his club had the ingredients to be a contender. Sensing this year’s team was potentially stronger than last year’s, Baker felt the turning point was how the Grade 9 players responded, improving as the season progressed. Baker said the key player who anchored the club all season was Bishar Ashfaq. “He was our most consistent bowler and batter,” he said of the Grade 11 student. “He was our highest scoring batter and didn’t take any wickets.” Matt Vittore, Bur Oak head coach, felt the difference in the match was in batting. “We had a good well-rounded game, but they (Pierre Elliott Trudeau) scored more runs effectively.” While disappointed in failing to retain the title, Vittore was glad to see his team reach the final, especially since this year’s group had less experience. “As the season went on, we got better. The talent we have is definitely there.” What both teams agreed on and hope to see possibly by next season is for their sport to take place during the spring session when weather conditions are more favourable

and daylight hours are longer as compared with the fall. To have their final played under above average weather conditions in early November, they felt, was a fortuitous break. The coaches noted other high schools in the province have cricket

as a spring sport. And with the CIMA School Cricket Tournament, the unofficial high school provincial championship taking place in the spring, Baker and Vittore said it works at a disadvantage to the YRAA champions, as it takes a while for the

players to get back into a playing groove. Mark Arsenault, YRAA athletic co-ordinator, confirmed he will bring up this up at their annual general meeting at the conclusion of the 2015-16 academic year.

Copper Creek Drive: Effective Monday, November 16 to Monday, December 4, 2015 As part of the Box Grove Community development, Copper Creek Drive, from Stonechurch Crescent to Bernbridge Road, will be closed to traffic for a threeweek period to facilitate safe and efficient installation of water and sewer connections. This work will occur in three (3) separate phases. Closure for Stage 1 will commence on Monday, November 16, 2015. Closure for Stages 2 and 3 is subject to weather conditions. Traffic control signs and detour routes will be in place to guide motorists and pedestrians. During construction, access to local residences and businesses within the construction area will be open. Details for bus detour routes will be provided on York Region Transit’s website at yorkregiontransit. com/en/serviceupdates. Emergency services have been advised of the proposed construction activity, and access by emergency services (Police, Fire, and Ambulance), postal delivery, and waste collection will remain unaffected during this time. Angus Glen Golf Club continues to play a major role in the Canadian golf landscape as it opens its front gates to the Professional Golfers Association of Ontario. After 13 years in Pickering, the PGA of Ontario will move its headquarters into a portion of the former head office of Kylemore Communities — located just off the front gates at Angus Glen. It will mark the association’s second time in Unionville, noted Kevin Purcell, executive director. Prior to moving to Pickering, their offices were for two years at the old school house, which has since been renovated to become Angus Glen Montessori. Noting they have a five-year arrangement with Angus Glen Golf Club, Purcell is excited about the move. “The response from our membership was overwhelming,” he said. To be located in a centralized area where they serve close to 1,300 members and in a high-profile golf environment, was a major objective in finding a new location. Purcell pointed out they have several PGA of Ontario members who are currently employed at Angus Glen Golf Club and who play there. — Michael Hayakawa

Royals working hard By Michael Hayakawa

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

LAST WEEK: Friday: Markham Royals 2 vs. Pickering Panthers 2. Saturday: Aurora Tigers 2 vs. Royals 1. Royals’ record: 11-7-2-125. Second place in North Division. COMING UP: Friday: vs. Newmarket Hurricanes at Markham Centennial Arena 7:30 p.m. Sunday: vs. Lindsay Muskies at Markham Centennial Arena, 1:30 p.m. The Markham Royals have won just one game and tied one in their last seven Ontario Junior Hockey League outings. Royals’ general manager and head coach Mike Galati, whose club got off to a sizzing start, insists the team has been playing good hockey. After reviewing video of their two contests last weekend, he said the team has been getting some bad breaks. Such was the case in their big early season encounter against the North Division-leading Aurora Tigers. With both clubs battling to a scoreless tie after one period, Aurora got two goals from Austin Gerhart in the second period to take a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes. With time winding down in a highly contested match in the third period, the Royals pulled goalkeeper Nathan Colitto in favour of an extra attacker. The move paid off when Lucas Candotta scored with 20 seconds remaining to get back to within a goal. But the Royals could get no closer when the final buzzer sounded. Aurora outshot Markham 42-28. The loss came on the heels of another close match they had against the Pickering Panthers at Markham Centennial Arena just 24 hours earlier in which the clubs battled to a 2-2 tie through 60 minutes and two overtime periods. The Panthers opened the scoring early in the first on a power play goal by Tiger McDonald. The Panthers accounted for the lone goal of the second period when Doug Carter lit the red light. But early in the third, the Royals struck for two quick goals by Tyson Bruce and Brendan Valko on the power play within a 69-second span to tie the score. The two clubs failed to score in two overtime sessions. In a fairly fast-paced game, the Royals outshot Pickering 49-31. INSIDER: The Royals had four players chosen to participate in the upcoming Eastern Canada Cup Challenge to be held in Cornwall from Nov. 16-18. Named to the OJHL Hawerchuk roster were Nathan Colitto and forwards Brandon Valko and team captain Aaron Spivak and defenceman Matthew Dunlop. The competition includes all-star squads from the OJHL, Maritime Hockey League, Central Canadian Hockey League, Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League and Quebec Junior Hockey League. GENERALLY SPEAKING: Said Galati: “It’s not that the players aren’t working hard. They’re doing all the same things they did when we were winning.” As for Royals players heading to the Eastern Canada Cup Challenge: “It’s great. They’ve all had a good year so far and we’re happy for them.” For more, go to www.markhamroyals.pointstreaksites.com

Celebrate a life well lived!

Wil Felgendreher was always true to his word By Teresa LaTchford

F

rom the moment Janet Laing set eyes on Wil Felgendreher, she knew he was a good soul. Laing was moving into a new apartment in Aurora with the hope of starting a new life. Little did she know, her Prince Charming lived right there in the building. “Are you a renter?” a deep voice asked while she loaded her belongings into the elevator of her new building. When she looked up, her gaze was met by what she describes as the most striking blue eyes that seemed to see past her flesh, right to her soul. “I fell in love with him right then and there,” she said. Felgendreher was the superintendent of the building and after he had come and gone from her apartment doing repairs, she finally mustered up the courage to ask him to accompany her for a drink at Orchid Thai. It was like this father of two and grandfather of one had put a spell on her. Child Care Wanted

“I totally lost my identity with him and loved him like I have never loved before,” she said. “He was a rough and tough guy on the outside, but a marshmallow on the inside.” Felgendreher’s heritage is German, but he was very proud to be Canadian. He found much joy in watching the Toronto Maple Leafs and considered himself a history and hot rod buff. He worked at The Victorian condominium building for years and before that he was employed at Magna, Flextronics, Jubb Utility, Cobblestone Retirement Lodge and K.P. Bronze. He was known for his honesty and always remained true to his word, especially if it meant helping others. In one instance, he gave up his chance to go to SARS-stock because a safety issue had come up at the condo building. He would run errands on his bike for those who weren’t mobile in the building and he didn’t think twice about befriending a homeless woman. “He also loved Aurora,” Laing said. “He was very interested in local history and never

How to tend to an indoor herb garden Fresh herbs and recently picked ingredients can add flavour to any meal. A home chef can even improve the flavour of store-bought or prepared foods with an herb garnish that can transform otherwise bland dishes into something you’ll want to eat again and again. Harvesting fresh herbs is easy for homeowners who have gardens right in their backyards. However, everyone does not have a backyard, and even those that do might find their gardens threatened by changing seasons or unwanted critters. When gardens are moved indoors, the bounty of fresh ingredients continues no matter the date on the calendar. Herb gardens are perhaps some of the easiest gardens to cultivate indoors because they don’t require large pots or much space. The plants themselves are relatively compact, and it only takes a pinch of herbs to give a meal some extra flavour. When growing herbs indoors, your indoor growing area must have adequate light to simulate the longer days of summer; otherwise, the plants may go dormant. It’s ideal to have a southern exposure on the herbs, with at least eight hours of sunlight per day. If you do not live in a particularly sunny locale, consider supplementing the plants with grow lights, which will provide the full spectrum of light the plants need. Indoor air can become too dry for herbs, so you will need to compensate by providing humidity. While there may be added humidity in a kitchen greenhouse window, it still may not be enough to keep the plants healthy. Think about misting the plants daily to create some extra humidity, or place herb pots on top

of a water-filled tray with pebbles so the evaporating water will add moisture without making roots soggy. Insects are another threat to indoor gardens because there is no cold weather to inhibit the hatching of insect eggs. Soil from outdoors may be more susceptible to insects that are already living in the dirt. Instead of soil from outside, use packaged soil or a non-soil alternative that will hold moisture without the added risk of bugs. If small insects appear, use a mist of soapy water to kill the bugs without harming the plants or making the herbs unfit for eating. Group herbs together according to their watering needs to make maintenance easier. New sprouts generally need more water than established plants. Prune the herbs as needed for recipes. If the herbs experience a growth spurt, trim some of the plants and freeze the herbs for later use.
