Aboriginals over-represented among homeless BY LISA QUEEN

bout 12 per cent of York Region’s homeless are Aboriginal residents, although they make up less than 1 per cent of the population, according to a new report. “Aboriginal peoples are over-represented in homeless populations across the country and, as the data suggests, this is the case in York Region as well,” according to the report, Understanding the Numbers: Working Together to Prevent, Reduce and End Homelessness in York Region, a joint document from York Region and the United Way of Toronto and York Region. “Research has shown that many personal issues facing Aboriginal peoples experiencing homelessness can be linked to various types of historical traumas.” In addition to challenges experienced by the general homeless population, such as limited education and unemployment, First Nations residents may also face struggles such as transitions from reserves to urban living, systemic racism and landlord discrimination, the report said. Pefferlaw’s Suzanne Smoke, a member of the Alderville First Nation and an advocate for missing and murdered Aboriginal women, agreed the root causes of homelessness of Aboriginal people are based on issues ranging from unemployment, low wages and lack of housing to colonization, racism, discrimination and cultural and geographic displacement of the reserve system. We need to acknowledge the problems and address overlapping crises in education, health, housing, infrastructure and resources, she said. “Government and Canadians need to take emergency action to address structural discrimination, especially the over-representation of Indigenous children in care, murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls and the

Housing prices: Is this the new reality? By Lisa Queen

T

lqueen@yrmg.com

wenty-four-year-old Nick DeRyck is living in his parents’ Newmarket basement, wondering if he will ever be able to afford to buy his own home despite finishing college, being employed and saving thousands of dollars towards a downpayment.

THROUGH THE ROOF

A series on housing prices Meredith Blunt’s family is readying to leave York Region after being outbid several times on Aurora homes despite a budget of $700,000 and an annual household income of more than $100,000. The average price of a house in the GTA is now $950,000 and requires an annual household income of $165,000. In some communities it’s even higher. In Richmond Hill, the average price is $1.07 million and you need a yearly household income of $179,550 to get in the front door. Welcome to the new reality, said York University professor James McKellar. While soaring prices make daily headlines, measures to help reduce costs could prove too unpopular to be implemented, McKellar, director of the real estate and infrastructure program at the university’s Schulich School of Business, said. Prices are sky high because there are so many people able to buy, whether they are investors or people who have borrowed money from parents and grandparents. “People tend to talk about hous-

The average house price in the GTA is now $950,000, although in some communities, such as Richmond Hill, the average price is over $1 million. ing affordability whereas the problem might be that housing is too affordable. The minute those people withdraw from the market, the prices may go down,” he said. “The first thing we may do is say how do we force people out of the housing market?” Governments can force people out of the housing market through measures such as mortgage restrictions and tax policies. “If you go to the federal government and say you should essentially have policies to drive people out of the market, they are going to say ‘Are you crazy, we want to get re-elected.’ All governments don’t want to face the problem. I know it’s perverse but it’s like anything else where people will price the

market. The government isn’t setting the high price, the buyers are and until you force some of them out of the market, the prices aren’t going to come down,” McKellar said. “We don’t have middle and upper middle class people out of housing. We have a problem that they can’t afford what they want. I’m not unsympathetic to them. I’m simply saying now that they go into the market, they find very stiff competition. The only way to reduce the price in that environment is to find some way to reduce the competition. And that is the tough one because the politicians have the means to do it but I don’t think they would have the political will to do that.”

Meanwhile, we all have to alter our perceptions of the type of housing we believe we are entitled to, said McKellar. In 1950, the average house was 830 square feet and was home to 4.2 people. Today, the average home is 2,000 square feet and is home to only 1.7 people, he said. Meanwhile, people in Canadian urban centres may have to get used to the notion that they will have to rent for life, as many Europeans do, rather than hang on to steadfast beliefs that they will own their own home, McKellar said. Housing prices in York Region are an escalating concern, said Newmarket Regional Councillor John Taylor, who chairs the region’s community and health services

committee. “Housing affordability is one of the most significant issues and challenges facing York Region and the residents of York Region today. It’s obviously an issue beyond the borders of York Region. I think it has always been an important issue but the recent hyper-escalation in housing prices has really brought it to the forefront in a new way,” said Taylor, a member of Housing York and co-chair of the Human Services Planning Board. “I can’t even imagine what it must be like and how frustrating it must be to be a young couple trying to save up for a downpayment and watching housing prices increase faster than they can actually save for the downpayment. The target is moving constantly. It must be so disheartening.” Higher levels of governments are making moves to address the issue, including the federal government’s announcements Monday that it will move to tighten mortgage rules and closing a tax loophole for foreign investors, he said. Meanwhile, Taylor wants to explore ideas raised at a regional workshop last week by British housing official Geraldine Howley and Australian housing official Scott Langford. For example, “profit for purpose” would allow the region to investigate ways of increasing its subsidized housing profits – such as boosting the number of market value units in its buildings – with the higher income used to increase the subsidized housing stock. “I think (high housing prices) is a new reality but I don’t think we just have to live with it. Steps can be taken by all levels of government and the private sector that this new reality is creating,” he said. “You don’t give up just because it looks like there is no perfect solution.”

Affordable housing is at the forefront of Markham’s basement apartment debate. The province has mandated municipalities to allow second suites as a way to tackle affordable housing. Regulating basement apartments and developing bylaws is part of the city’s ongoing comprehensive bylaw review process. “Affordable housing is a complex issue,” said Rizaldo Padilla, a senior planning adviser with the Municipal Affairs and Housing Ministry during a recent Markham committee meeting. “This is an option in the long list of options. Second suites is just a comma in the sentence.” But Mayor Frank Scarpitti called the province’s move “nothing more than feel-good legislation.” There needs to be more incentives from the all levels of government to entice developers to build affordable housing, Scarpitti argued. “We need decent affordable housing with natural light.

Not the basement of someone’s house.” It might be feel-good legislation, Padilla said, but it’s lowlying fruit. “It’s an entry point to make grounds in modest ways,” he said. Allowing second suites make owning a home, especially in Markham, more affordable, he added. And under new banking rules, a homeowner can use rental income as part of their total income when applying for a mortgage. Based on the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, adding a second suite to a $800,000 home increases affordability by about 11 per cent. And $900 a month in rent reduces income required to carry the $800,000 home by about $20,000, from $174,000 to $154,000. Why are municipalities charged with cooling the housing market, asked regional councillor Joe Li, who proposed Ontario follow suit and tax foreign investors. “Ontario should make the

Councillors were also concerned about the added burden of second suites on municipal services such as water, libraries and community centres as well as schools. One possible solu-

tion discussed is to tax basement apartments. Councillors also argued basement apartments devalue neighbourhoods. Instead, basement apartments are seen as home improvements and increase property, Padilla said.

Legal and illegal basement apartments exist everywhere. “There is one on every single street,” Councillor Karen Rea said. “I would prefer to have them regulated and know where they are.” Residents wanting to establish a basement apartment have to apply to the city’s committee of adjustment on a case-by-case basis. Markham is faced with two issues: dealing with existing second suits and how to shape new units, Padilla said. The province wants municipalities to get ahead of the curve and develop second suite policies that apply across the board. “The policy is to allow municipalities to control the issue,” Padilla said. “We understand it cannot happen throughout. But we don’t want municipalities to make it difficult to allow second suites.” While the city does allow second suites in principle under the official plan, those policies do not translate into zoning and bylaw regulations and do not comply with provincial legislation.

No excuse for recent hockey brawl

W

hile hockey has always had a roughand-tumble reputation, there’s simply no excuse for what allegedly occurred at Milliken Mills Rink in Markham earlier this month. Following a feisty match between bantam A teams from Markham and Orillia, things apparently turned uglier when parents, coaches and players began “chirping” back and forth after the game. According to reports, players from the Orillia side, perhaps carried away in celebration of their 4-1 victory, began to hurl insults at some of their opponents’ mothers, which led to a melee involving parents and the players who were around 14 years old. When the dust from the donnybrook cleared, one player was injured and one dad required six stitches after sustaining a cut from a skate blade. Markham Waxers president George Schnarr said about 10 people were involved in the fight.

A message must be sent that this kind of behaviour isn’t welcome on or off the ice. “This is not a small little incident,” Schnarr told yorkregion.com. “We will be doing an investigation. Thankfully, it’s very rare, I have been doing this more than 10 years and it’s a stretch to remember something of this nature. Sometimes you see parents shoving and shouting. With players, 95 per cent of it is done on the ice.” In addition to the Waxers, York Regional Police, the Ontario Minor Hockey Association and the Orillia Minor Hockey Association plan on probing the fight. Whatever these inquiries find, one thing that is not in dispute is the fact that this kind of conduct is simply unacceptable. Our local hockey rinks should be spaces where youngsters work on improving their skills, while also learning the importance of good sportsmanship, not venues to showcase the kind of antics that wouldn’t be out of place in the 1977 film Slap Shot. Those responsible for the dust-up should give their heads a shake and, more than that, they should be held to account for their actions. Not only does the brawl set a very poor example for others who may have been present — younger players and fans especially — but someone could have been seriously injured. It’s also troubling that the taunts were apparently aimed at the mothers of the Markham team’s players, suggesting some misogyny may also have been on display. In any event, a message must be sent that this kind of behaviour isn’t welcome on or off the ice. These two teams are scheduled to meet again next month in Orillia, so one can only hope the re-match will serve as an opportunity to make amends.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Association’s name not inclusive Re: Markham’s Canadian Chinese Table Tennis Association building 71,000-square-foot facility, Sept. 29. Why is the new centre for the Canadian Chinese Table Tennis Association not just called the Canadian Table Tennis Association? As true Canadians, we should be inclusive rather than exclusive. I take offence to the association’s name. I certainly hope no taxpayer money goes towards this facility.

Thanks for story on Forest of Hope Re: Forest of Hope commemorates Armenian genocide, Sept. 29.

SEND A LETTER: Email letters to editor to newsroom@yrmg.com

Stop the ocean of townhouses

I am a Markham resident of Armenian descent and I attended the opening ceremony of the Forest of Hope memorial, which commemorates the centennial of the Armenian genocide by planting 100 trees. These trees will be a whispering reminder for all that genocidal acts, discrimination and human rights violations are acts of aggression that should not be tolerated by any society. This forest can be a resource centre for teaching our new generation the evils of Genocide. Your article is well presented and I commend you for it. Thank you for the coverage.

I am writing about the transformation of my hometown Markham. On my walks I see that lots of townhouses are being built and old houses are being ripped down, as well as the very old trees that took a very long time to grow. The new homes are taking away the space where animals used to live in the forests and fields. There is virtually no natural beauty left in Markham. Every time I walk by old houses being torn down I get mad and sad and frustrated. You should preserve natural spaces, old homes and make more space for forests and parks. This will make our town more beautiful and better to live I than an ocean of houses and roads.

Correction Incorrect numbers The article, York University campus taking shape, which ran in the Oct. 6 edition, contained incorrect information. The number of students expected to attend the new York University campus in the first year is between 4,000 and 4,500. That number is expected to rise to about 10,000. We regret the error.

CLarification Missing information In the article, Action on elected regional chair coming soon, MPP says, which ran in the Oct. 6 edition, the following was omitted: Richmond Hill MPP Reza Moridi first introduced a private member’s bill to amend the Municipal Act in 2012. We regret the omission.

Findings include: • In 2015, 1,103 people used emergency shelters or transitional housing in York Region, although regional officials acknowledge demand may be higher as they are often at capacity. • Twelve per cent of people using emergency shelters are children aged 16 and under. • More than three-quarters of people accessing homeless supports in York were born in Canada. • Males and youth aged 16 to 24 are overrepresented in the homeless population.

over-incarceration of Indigenous peoples. And government and Canadians need to understand and emphasize the growing crisis of poverty and discriminatory treatment of Indigenous peoples,” she said. “The historical introduction of foreign systems such as education, justice, health and child protection have left Aboriginal peoples in a cycle of economic dependency, including high rates of poverty and unemployment.” The disproportionately high number of homeless Aboriginal residents is just one finding in the homeless report, which is finally putting numbers on a growing issue in York that has been discussed in recent years, but has had little data to substantiate it. At the same time, the report isn’t a complete picture because there are many invisible homeless, including people who couch-surf where they can find a temporary bed, Cordelia Abankwa, the region’s general manager of social services, said. “When people think of homelessness, they tend to think of street homelessness. And I think one of the things that we’re very fortunate with in York Region is that we have a real opportunity to prevent homelessness, to keep it from turning into the sort of on-the-street homelessness we see in other jurisdictions,” she said, adding it is almost impossible to reverse street homelessness once it reaches a critical point. “When we started having conversations in

a really serious way about homelessness, the focus was on prevention.” The report’s data was pulled from the region’s first point-in-time count Jan. 20 and 21, which tallied the homeless found in shelters and on the streets, and from the Homeless Individuals and Families Information System, which collects and analyzes data on the use of emergency shelters in Canada. “Our data reveals that in York Region, homelessness is caused by no single factor and exists across all demographics,” the report said. “It is not an issue exclusive to a particular group or demographic and could happen to anyone. While homelessness in York Region is most often a one-time temporary situation, for some, it is a more chronic issue with individuals cycling in and out of homelessness or staying homeless for lengthy periods of time.”

Markham Pan Am Centre lights the way with new solar panels Amanda Persico

apersico@yrmg.com

Markham flipped the switch on its latest solar panel installation at the Markham Pan Am Centre. The solar panel array is the city’s ninth solar panel installation and measures close to two and a half football fields with more than 1,700 solar panels. The 450 kilowatt feedin-tariff array is expected to produce enough electricity to power 65 average Markham homes. “It is wonderful to see a Pan Am venue transformed into an energy-sustainability legacy for the community while helping the province deliver a clean, modern and reliable electricity system,” said the province’s energy minister Glenn Thibeault, who was on hand to help launch the latest array of solar panels. The new solar panel

project, completed in partnership with PowerStream, Markham and RESCo Energy Inc., brings the city’s renewable solar fleet to 1.83 megawatts, which is one of the largest municipal collections in the province. On average, the city’s nine solar arrays create about $300,000 in revenue per year, offsetting the city’s carbon footprint by close to 100 tonnes per year. That’s equivalent to taking about 21 cars off the road or powering about 215 Markham homes. “This launch is a great moment to celebrate the strong partnership between Markham and the province of Ontario in a shared commitment to fight climate change and be a leader in clean, renewable energy generation,” said international trade minister and Markham-Unionville MPP, Michael Chan.

Markham’s other solar panel installations include: 250 kW at the Angus Glen Community Centre, 9.6 kW at the Civic Centre, 10 kW at the city’s fire station in Cornell, 100 kW at the Milliken Mills Community Centre, 285 kW at the Mount Joy Community Centre, 120 kW at the Clatworthy Arena, 350 kW at the Thornhill Community Centre and 250 kW at 8100 Warden Ave. “The presence of solar systems on city-owned buildings aligns with Markham’s comprehensive strategy to make our municipality one of the most sustainable communities in North America,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. PowerStream owns more than 85 solar panel projects across Ontario, which generate more than 18 megawatts each year. That’s enough to power more than 2,700 homes for about 20 years. There’s one certainty for local sports apparel stores when it comes to the Toronto Blue Jays right now: merchandise sales are red-hot. At Pro Image, which is located in Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, nearly half the store is decked out in Jays shirts, hats, bobbleheads and other paraphernalia. With the team in the midst of a second consecutive playoff run, fans want to wear the team’s signature blue and white. In fact, in the brief time yorkregion. com was chatting with the store’s cashier, Riley Grace, almost everyone who came through the door walked immediately to the Jays section. They tried on baseball caps and sorted through t-shirts and sweatshirts. It’s hardly an unusual practice these days, Grace

said. “The Jays have been the best seller lately, by far,” he said, sporting a Jays cap and putting a white team jersey on a hanger Sunday afternoon. The three most popular Jays for merchandise sales, in order, are third baseman and reigning American League MVP Josh Donaldson, centre fielder Kevin Pillar and pitcher Marcus Stroman, Grace said. “Last year was definitely far bigger, in terms of excitement for it; this year’s still been really good, but not as big,” he said. “People expect them to be in there and the fan base is already built. Last year, it was ‘I got to hop on the bandwagon; the Jays are winning and I have to get my gear’, but if they make it to the next round and then to the World Series, I can see the excitement going way up.” National media reported on the sudden hike in

Jays merchandise sales as the team sprinted to its first AL East division title in more than 20 years last summer, and while the Jays struggled a bit down the stretch of this year’s regular season - they settled for a wild card berth after losing the division lead to the Boston Red Sox over the final month of this season - attendance reached over three million at Rogers Centre. Interest in the team has clearly been expressed through merchandise purchases at many local retailers and food and beverage sales at some restaurants, said Chris Benson, owner of The Cove in Newmarket. “Last year, people really didn’t come in for games because they expected them to win (late in the year),” he said, as a Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals playoff game appeared on television screens in the

bar area. “Ninety-nine per cent of people in this town are Maples Leafs fans, so they’re used to letdown. They don’t expect much. People in here are more vocal and it’s all positive. They’ve been ahead in every (playoff ) game. It’s been a positive experience.” Even The Cove’s takeout service is climbing lately,

Benson said. “They make an event out of it,” he said. “People have really done up their homes and they invite their buddies to come over and watch the game. For a big game like this, we notice an increase. People call in and take it home. It lingers too, because then people want to come in the next day and talk

about the game.” The Cove is not offering specific food specials during the run, but the Jays have been used to help push existing promotions, such as a $10 pint of beer and pound of wings combo, Benson said. The Jays face the Cleveland Indians in the American League Championship Series.

Nico Ferreira, 2, picks an apple Saturday at Pine Farms Orchard in King.

When the leaves begin to change on trees, it means apples are ripe for picking. Whether you prefer your apples sweet or tart, large or small, red or green, there are plenty of varieties to choose from right here in York Region. For many local families, a day at the orchard means picking their own and enjoying a number of family-friendly activities local farms offer.

1 2

Choosing a variety: There are hundreds of varieties of apples, according to Brooks Farms, but determining how the apples will be used can help determine what kind of apple you should seek out.

3

Harvesting: Being able to tell if an apple is ready for picking can be difficult but there is a tried and tested rule, according to Pine Farms Orchard. Using what is known as the “eye to the sky and twist” method, gently hold the apple by the bottom with the stem to the sky. Gently twist and if the apple comes off the branch easily, it is ready to be harvested.

4

Storing: While apples are a durable fruit, try not to bang them around as bruising promotes rot, according to Pine Farms Orchard.

Where to pick: Applewood Farm and Winery, 12442 McCowan Rd., Stouffville; Brooks Farms, 122 Ashworth Rd., Mount Albert; Country Apple Orchard Farm, 3105 16th Sideroad, King City; Homestead Orchards, 3961 Old Homestead Rd., Sutton; Organics Farm, 7550 19th Ave., Markham; Pine Farms Orchard, 2700 16th Sideroad, King

“It feels good to know it’s all taken care of.” By pre-planning your final arrangements today, you can save time and money - and provide greater comfort and convenience to your family.

Funny man Ron James performs apersico@yrmg.com

Amanda Persico

Cracking jokes is serious business for Canadian comedian Ron James. “With all the research I do, I feel like I’m back in university,” said James, who is embarking on a comedy tour this week. “Comedy is like making a roux. And if any one says they have the Rosetta Stone to funny, they are full of shit.” James is bringing his side-splitting, kinetically charged Pedal to the Metal comedy show to the Flato Markham Theatre on Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. It’s been almost two years since his last performance in Markham. There’s been a change in government, from the dark cloud of Stephen Harper to Camelot days of Justin Trudeau, not to mention the rise of Donald Trump in the United States presidential campaign, James said. “We went from a prime minister who never smiled to one who never stops smiling,” he said. “And I’m two years older. That means piles and piles of new material. There is no automatic material.” His iconic style of comedy also comes with a message - a message about politics, about Canada and about ourselves. “I’m not up there telling dick jokes just to be funny,” he said. “I try to connect the dots and let the audience walk through it with comedy.” The Markham stop is one of many in Ontario this week before James films this year’s CBC New Year’s special in Kingston next month followed by a full Atlantic tour. James has been selling out theatres for more than 15 years with his comedian’s eye for satire and a writer’s ear for language. The Canadian fast-talker also has eight critically acclaimed comedy specials under his belt as well as his own series, the Ron James Show, which is going on five seasons. But it is performing in theatres both large and small that keeps this funny man on his toes. It’s the attention to detail and respect for the audience that pushes James to create new material, jokes, punchlines and bazingas. “That’s what the audience deserves,” he said. “If a comedian is rehashing old material, he’s not doing his job.” For more information or to purchase tickets, call the box office 905-305-SHOW (7469) or visit markhamtheatre.ca

Everyone loves a deal. Together with StyleDemocracy, Metroland Media hosts The Warehouse Mall, featuring designer brands at clearance prices.

The three-day sale (Oct. 21-23) features more than 15 vendors and more than 10,000 products at discount prices. “People go crazy for good deals,” said Amanda Andolina, Metroland event co-ordinator. The Warehouse Mall features international designer

names such as Puma, as well as several local vendors. Along with designer shoes and clothing, shoppers can also find premium beauty supplies, heath and wellness products, outdoor and athletic clothing, home accessories, luggage and jewelry.

For about a decade, the Markham Fairgrounds has been home to the annual Home Show, but as demographics and shopping habits of the area change, shoppers were looking for more of a retail experience. “The Home Show might

be something that’s fading,” Andolina said. “People were always asking if we were selling products featured in the Home Show. Everyone is looking for a deal.” The timing couldn’t be better, as once Thanksgiving is over, many people turn their

attention to holiday shopping. There will also be a food court featuring local food trucks. Previous StyleDemocracy warehouse sales included top names such as Puma, Tibi, The North Face, Linen Chest and Nordstrom.

Soltysiak windsurfs his way to fifth in world rankings Michael Hayakawa

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Markham native Phil Soltysiak recently concluded his Professional Windsurfing Association World Tour season on a memorable note. He tackled the waves at the Sylt Windsurf World Cup PWA Grand Slam event in Sylt, Germany and finished seventh. With 48 surfers on hand, Soltysiak, 29, reached the

round of eight after outpointing Maarten Van Ochten of Holland 107.987.2 and Tonky Frans of Bonaire 134.7-105 before falling to Gollito Estredo of Venezuela 151.6-131.5. In fifth place after the single elimination, Soltysiak then competed in a double elimination in which all surfers knocked out in the quarter-finals had a second chance to advance. Soltysiak eliminated Steven Van Broeckhoven of

Belgium 96.5-95.1 and then faced Yentel Caers of Belgium, falling 106.5-84.6 to finish seventh. That result, combined with a ninth-place result in Austria and fifth in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands on the PWA Tour, boosted his world ranking to a careerhigh fifth place. “Fifth in the world is my best world ranking, so I’m extremely pleased with the way the year has played out for me,” he said.

Cardinals soar past Marauders, retain Markham Bowl title Michael Hayakawa

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Talik Ehouman put on a oneman show for the St. Brother Andre Catholic High School Cardinals when they faced the Markham District High School Marauders in this year’s annual Markham Bowl football game at the Mount Joy turf field Thursday evening. Well, the Grade 12 student was almost a one-man wrecking crew. For that, the Cardinals were elated after they successfully retained their Markham Bowl title with a 33-18 win and their first victory of the York Region Athletic Association senior campaign against two losses. Utilized as a running back and slotback on offence, Ehouman was electrifying whenever he had the ball in his hands and proceeded to record five touchdowns. The first touchdown took place on the Cardinals’ first possession of the game when he ran a reverse 55 yards. The Marauders though, entered the half with a 10-7 lead.

Markham Marauders free safety Kyle Funk gets a grip on St. Brother Andre Cardinals wide receiver Hakeem Harris during the annual Markham Bowl senior football game between St. Brother Andre Cardinals and Markham District High School Marauders, Thursday night at Mount Joy Field. The Cardinals won this year’s game 33-18. “We went away from running the ball and we tried to throw and it wasn’t happening,” explained Cardinals’ head coach Joe Colangelo as

into Ehouman’s hands during the second half. That decision paid off as he scored his second major on the Cardinals’ first possession of the third quarter with a 40-yard run. Before the final whistle sounded, he added his final three touchdowns while Johnny Kitsos kicked three converts to round out the scoring. Colangelo could not say enough about Ehouman’s herculean performance. “He was all over the place. He made a lot happen and he made us (coaches) look smart,” he said. Along with what damage Ehouman inflicted on the Marauders, the Cardinals’ defence also came up big as safety Jordan Anderson had one interception while the play of inside linebackers Hunter Donaghey and Owen Francis and Grade 10 defensive end Nicholas Mongillo limited the Marauders’ ground game. While elated with the win, Colangelo was quick to praise the Marauders, who fell to 0-2. “They gave us a nice competitive

game and that was nice to see,” he said. In particular, Colangelo could not say enough about Marauders’ wide receiver and defensive back Kyle Funk, who returned two interceptions for touchdowns. In addition, the Grade 12 student scored a pair of two-point converts and the defence recorded a safety. “He’s a pretty special player and he deserves a lot of credit,” Colangelo said of Funk. Working with a relatively young and inexperienced roster, Marauders assistant coach Greg Pritty felt their club continues to be a work in progress. But it’s one that is taking some positive steps. “We made some big mistakes that young teams make and they (St. Brother Andre) capitalized on them,” he said. The Cardinals are scheduled to host first-place Huron Heights Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. while Markham District High School hosts Villanova College at 1:30 p.m. on the same day.

Maintain your roof with this 5-point checklist On average, Canadian homeowners replace their roofing materials every 18 years at an average cost of $4,500 per project (based on a standard 1,000 square foot bungalow roof ). Fortunately, a roof’s longevity and its ability to remain waterproof is increased with proper maintenance. Use this handy checklist to evaluate the condition of your roof and determine if it’s time to consider a quick fix or a major overhaul. 1. Condition of the roof: Inspect the surface and list the required minor repairs. It may be necessary to add repair compound around any openings such as the chimney. Repair or replace aged or damaged shingles, remove moss and mildew, and clean out the gutters. 2. Water tightness: If it’s accessible, an inspection of your attic is a good way to find potential sourc-

es of water leaks. Dark stained areas on wood are usually signs of water damage. The accumulation of ice in the lower areas of the roof may also cause water leakage. 3. Insulation: Formation of ice on lower areas of your roof is also a sign of poor insulation. Make sure your ceiling insulation is composed of a continuous vapour barrier and an insulating material providing an R-factor (measure of thermal resistance) of 30 or more. The vapour barrier must be airtight, and all holes for pipes and cables must be sealed. This prevents warm and humid air from going through to the attic and condensing just under the roof structure during cold weather. 4. Ventilation: Appropriate ventilation and insulation of your attic allows air to circulate under

the roof, reducing the melting of snow and the risk of ice accumulation on the lower portions of your roof. In the summer, appropriate ventilation makes a house more comfortable and helps prevent shingles from overheating. 5. Decide a course of action: If your roof inspection uncovers problems and extensive wear, it may be necessary to consider giving it a facelift. For a more economical and environmentally friendly alternative to replacing your shingles, consider using Techniseal’s elastomeric roof coating called RoofKeeper. Guaranteed to extend the life of your roof for at least 10 years, it forms a UV-resistant barrier between the roofing material and the elements to stop deterioration. It’s also easy to use and can be applied over any sloping or vertical surfaces on your old asphalt

shingle or sheet-metal roof with a paint roller or airless sprayer.

UNIT FOR LEAsE IN sTOUFFVILLE

FAIRGATE BEAUTY

The kitchen is one of the busiest rooms in the house, and is no stranger to spills on the counters, messes on the tables, and dirty dishes in the sink. Here are a few tips that’ll make cleanup easier and leave your kitchen always ready to shine. 1. Clean as you go. As you wait for a sauce to simmer, water to boil, or a casserole to cook, use this time to clean a dish or wipe down the counter. It’s a super simple task that also makes the most of the time you’ll be waiting around the kitchen anyway, letting you enjoy your creation as soon as it’s ready. 2. Choose fingerprint-resistant appliances. Tired of scrubbing your fridge to get rid of sticky fingerprints? Solve that problem with fingerprintresistant stainless steel. This innovative feature makes maintaining a clean kitchen effortless, and can be found across the entire new Maytag

kitchen lineup, including refrigerators, dishwashers, and ranges. 3. Plan ahead. Planning to make a hearty chili on Monday and a fresh dinner salad on Tuesday? Chopping all your veggies at the same time is a great time saver and means you’ll only need to clean one round of dishes for two delicious meals. Also, planning your meals for the week in advance helps ensure no food goes to waste. 4. Cover your dishes. Another simple yet effective trick to make cleanup faster is covering your countertops or your ovenware with sheets of wax or parchment paper. Do this before prepping your ingredients or cooking and when you’re finished simply toss the sheet. You can also do this with a baking sheet or use aluminum foil instead. This way you won’t need to worry about clean up.

The Good News - This won’t affect most of you who are in the market already. Most people are taking 25 years or less in amortization. Rates are still at record lows, so overall, this was expected. The Not-So-Good News - First-Time Home Buyers not in the market, don’t be too concerned about this news. The banks and trust companies are working diligently to see how or what exemptions can be put in place for you.
