The race for one of four regional councillor seats on Markham council is heating up. To date, there are six names on the list of registered candidates all vying for one of four Markham regional councillor spots. The top four vote-getters will become Markham’s voices at regional council. The candidate with the most votes earns the title deputy mayor. In the race are incumbent regional councillors Jack Heath, Jim Jones and Joe Li. Also in the race are Nirmala Armstrong, a local lawyer, Bin Chang, and Peter Pavlovic, president of the Aileen-Willowbrook Ratepayers Association. Both Ms Armstrong and Mr. Pavlovic ran in the 2010 municipal election for regional councillor. Other incumbents running in the 2014 municipal election include Howard Shore in the new ward 1, Carolina Moretti in the new ward 4, Colin Campbell in the new ward 5, Logan Kanapathi in the new ward 7 and Alex Chiu in the new ward 8. Mr. Campbell is up against Siva Siagnanam and Raj Subramaniam. Mr. Kanapathi, who is also seeking the Liberal nomination for the new federal Scarborough North riding, is up against Sothy Sella. Mr. Chiu is up against Josephy (Mohan) Remisiar, president of the Milliken Mills Lions Club and the Markham Tamil Orga-

nization. Mr. Remisiar came in second behind the incumbent Mr. Chiu in the 2010 municipal election. There is also a race shaping up in the new ward 6 between Amanda Yeung Collucci and Raymond Miu. Other registered candidates include Rukshan Para for York Region School Board trustee for Markham wards 4 and 5; Juanita Nathan and Yogi Suri for public school board trustee for Markham wards 7 and 8. The municipal election is Oct. 27. The nomination process closes Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. Those interested in running for either mayor, regional councillor or ward councillor as well as school board trustee can submit their nomination form to the city clerk during regular business hours along with the applicable fee: $200 for the office of mayor and $100 for other offices.

WHO CAN RUN? To run for a spot on Markham council you must be: • 18 or older; • a Canadian citizen; • a Markham resident or Markham landowner or tenant or the spouse of said person; and • eligible to vote. Candidates will also be asked to provide photo identification, proof of age, residency and citizenship. For more information, visit markham.ca

P

eople love to complain. Even in a place like Canada, where so many things run right, people love to complain when things don’t run just exactly quite right. Their Big Mac takes four minutes to be prepared. What’s going on around here! “Isn’t the motto ‘3 minutes or it’s free’?” Or was that the pizza place?” the little voice in your head is saying. They ask for a variety of Timbits in their box of 20, but when they have a closer look, there seems to be a couple more of the jelly-filled ones than they really would have liked. Obviously, a conspiracy to get rid of mini jelly doughnut type things that are not selling well by systematically putting more mini jelly doughnut type things in the boxes of people who look like they won’t complain. Arghh! I hate that. They order something online promising delivery in three days but it doesn’t get there until the fourth day. What the...! And now, sadly, your spouse’s birthday will be celebrated without a gift. :( The plow plows my street, Bernie O’Neill but now there’s snow at the end of my driveway. Oh, great! Meanwhile, the street is not scraped down to bare pavement within an hour of the first flakes hitting the ground. What’s up with that?! Oh, the many little outrages of our terribly difficult lives here in Canada. But somehow we manage. And then, out of the blue, an ice storm strikes (a rare event) followed by a “polar vortex” — which doesn’t just sound like cold air but cold, evil, bad attitude air. So what happens? Well, suddenly some of us think we have something to really complain about. As in, my trash has not been picked up! Sure, the streets were a mess. Temperatures have plunged to the point where no one should be working outdoors for more than an hour or so. Machines that work in normal conditions are not working. Before that, people who were supposed to go to work couldn’t get there, had no power, had to stay home with family. Some have called in sick because they are allergic to working in -25C. The resulting travesty? Some people’s garbage did not get picked up on time. Some people’s Christmas trees sat out on the curb for more than a week. It’s not as if the garbage is piling up in their homes, heaps and mountains of food waste and wrappings and you name it and there are rats and cockroaches and any number of untold diseases running rampant. No, their trash is out at the curb. In the cold. And if left in the cold would be preserved for a century. Oh, the horror. One councillor up north called it a “trash crisis”, I guess, because people are complaining to him. Meanwhile, cities and towns are applying to the province for financial help from the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP). (I think a more memorable name would be Ontario Catastrophe Relief Assistance Program – OCRAP.) Why they should get this money, I am not certain. Trees were knocked down. Branches need to be removed. New trees ought to be planted. But it’s something we can do over time and 90 per cent of trees were left standing. Is it such a problem if branches sit in the park until spring? Have we really lost so many trees the city looks like a wasteland? (We have new subdivisions with virtually no trees — are these disaster zones?) Just as the snow will melt, spring will come, the song birds will return, the grass will spring to life, the deep freeze will eventually end, the crews will catch up and your garbage will be collected. So relax and enjoy the fireplace channel, if you happened to PVR it over the holidays (if your power was on). And get ready for the next storm. We’ve got months of winter left to go.

Our theme this week is Scottish in commemoration of the fabled Scotsman who was probably their most prolific — and romantic — writer of verse and of song. Basically a farmer who followed his heart, at first unsteady, but eventually to immortal fame as the national poet of Scotland. You can’t attain these heights on an empty stomach, so we’ll be serving traditional Scottish fare in his memory. We’ve used a bit of license where it was necessary to do so, but we should be able to make a Scotsman feel at home this week.

BLUEBERRIES

These seem to be a natural at the moment, because we all have the Winter Blues... it’s -24° today! What’s good here are that these are in full pints, excellent since they are considered brain food. They come from Chile, and they are at their peak since the growing season there is seemingly as long as the country is, in a North-South sense. Eat up, and be smarter! Featured at $2.99 pint this week.

CHICKENS SMOKED

I really didn’t think that this was a good fit with Scottish fare, but a simple wander through the ‘net’ proved me wrong. Smoking is most definitely an accepted Scottish practice, and you will find many recipes for smoked chickens, and many purveyors. Ours are a bit different in that we smoke them whole rather than in portions. We use oak, as they do, and I recommend the very un-Scottish but delicious OFF red pepper jellies that we sell THIS as the condiment of choice. WEEK Reg. $14.95 each.

%

And to demonstrate what is possible with these, we’ll also be featuring a deli salad using lentils, our bacon, onions, grape tomatoes, mustard, lemon and chives. Featured this week at $1.49/100g.

LUNCH? MARMALADE BAKING — WHAT’S FOR —

We’ve been in a hot and protracted debate about what to serve for lunch that would be appropriate for Robbie Burns. We wrestled with Bacon Baps, because you need the best bacon for that (which we have), but we finally settled on salmon: ‘Scottish-style’ Salmon, which is actually Atlantic salmon! We’ll be making these sandwiches on a dark bread with the customary cream cheese and capers, sweet red onions and spinach. Featured this week at $6.99 each.

For Sunday Brunch, we’ll be serving Scotch Broth Soup, with a choice of either Aberdeen Angus Steak Pie, Chicken Breast with a Scotch Cream Sauce or Farfalle Pasta with Chicken, in a Rosé Sauce, all with either mashed potatoes or rice, tea or coffee, plus a mini dessert. Served from 11am to 2pm. Price will be $10.95.

MACKAY’S

No Scottish (or even English) breakfast is complete without marmalade, so we’ve arranged a feature on MacKay’s. 10 great flavours in all, from Arbroath, Scotland. OFF THIS Reg. $4.99/250ml. WEEK

SQUARE

SAUSAGES You might know these as Lorne Sausages, so named after the original butcher who brought them fame. It’s a pork sausage, with ‘crumb’ or ‘rusk’, which is English for breadcrumbs. It’s on the mild side, and it’s a must LB. for the occasion.

SIRLOIN RUMP JOINT % 25

This term should bring the meat nomenclature police out in force, but it’s really a sirloin steak roast. We trim them really well (so you don’t have to), and they can be had in any size from 2 to 7 lbs. It’s a great oven roast. What to serve it with? Nips and Tattys; OFF THIS translated that’s parsnips and potatoes—horseradish, too! Reg. $9.95/lb. WEEK

CHEESE SOME

PLEASE!

This cheese is a cheddar from England, but it’s jacked-up with Scotch Whiskey, in the spirit of the beloved Burns. It’s pretty smooth in character, and it will put you in the mood for your Scotch Eggs and Rumble de Thumps. OFF Reg. $5.79 per 100g THIS WEEK

WHAT’S COOKING

DELI

AT THE

Let’s start this off with a traditional Scotch Broth, made with lamb shanks, sweet onions, carrots, celery and turnips. It will be available in a 1L size. Featured at $5.99 each. Next, we’ll move on to Scotch Eggs. We use our sausage meat, ‘crumb’, herbs and spices, and the hard-boiled egg, of course! These are a meal in themselves (you might need two if you’re hungry). They are very good with chutney. Featured at $1.49 each. And now, we’ll have Rumble de Thumps. This is a Colcannon-like dish with potatoes, onions, cabbage, cheddar and butter. It will be sold in 4”x5” foils. Featured at $4.99 each. Lastly, we’ll be making Steak Pies, using that venerable Scottish beef, Aberdeen Angus, a beef that is world-renowned. We use lots of veggies, including peas, bacon, beef stock, spices, and finish it off with a nip of Scotch. Featured at $16.95 each (Includes $2 Ramekin Deposit).

WHAT’S

THIS WEEK?

This week we are making all kinds of wonderful Scottish delights! SCONES $1.69 each There will be a sale on a variety of scones this week: blueberry with lemon zest, oatmeal and a bit of buttermilk, strawberry with orange marmalade baked in, and lemon flavored with a bit of Scotch Whiskey, nutmeg and honey! “TIPSY LAIRD” $5.95 Tipsy Laird is a Scottish term for Trifle. A wonderful concoction of custard, whipped cream, fresh berries and white cake soaked with sherry and Drambuie. Topped with toasted almond slices. Packed in containers in our self-serve bakery cooler (right by the squares). SHORTBREAD $9.95/container Shortbread has been called “the jewel in the crown” of Scottish baking. Although it has been made since the 12th century, the refinement of shortbread is credited to Mary, Queen of Scots. Traditionally the shape is triangular “petticoat tail”, but we are featuring our square shortbread this week. We only use butter, brown sugar and flour to make ours, and they melt in your mouth. The flavors this week are lemon, traditional, Toblerone (I know, not Scottish, but very popular) and almond. OATMEAL COOKIES $7.95/container We have been making these cookies for many years, most popular being oatmeal raisin. Besides the raisin, we are also making plain oatmeal, triple chocolate oatmeal and a new Oatmeal Blueberry! ‘MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS” CAKE $15.95 We wanted to make something interesting with Scottish Orange Marmalade this week, so we came up with this recipe. It is an absolutely delicious buttercake with dates and orange marmalade baked in. It is sweet and tart at the same time. After baking, it’s brushed with melted butter and brown sugar and topped with our homemade candied orange slices. This is sure to become a new favourite! CARROT CAKE $15.95 and $25.95 I’ve been told that carrot cake is a favourite in Scottish home-style bakeshops. Our carrot cake is full of carrots, pineapple, pecans and coconut, iced with a rich cream cheese icing and topped with OFF little royal icing carrots. THIS

Bill to end wasteful ads from Ottawa good start ISSUE: Federal Conservative government advertises program not yet launched.

T

he way the federal Conservative government seems to approach some of its advertising spending reminds us what it must feel like to pay for a meal after you lose your appetite. Canadians, including the people of York Region, need to know about national programs that promote, for instance, public health initiatives or changes to employment insurance. But spending millions to advertise a program that has yet to launch and has hit bump after bump in the road to negotiating said plan with the provinces and territories is a bit fresh. The proposed Canada Job Grant, touted by the Tories in last October’s throne speech, is meant to help the most vulnerable people in our communities, workers who don’t qualify for employment insurance, have few skills or are poorly educated. Problem is, while it is supposed to launch April 1, Ottawa and the provinces and territories are nowhere near an agreement on exactly how it will roll out. Why the rush in advertising it then, you ask? That’s a good question and one to which Liberal MP David McGuinty is seeking an answer. Mr. McGuinty last October introduced a bill based on Ontario’s system that would have the Auditor General appoint an independent advertising commission to oversee government spending on advertising and pre-screen all advertisements. It is called the Elimination of Partisan Government Advertising Act and, in Mr. McGuinty’s words, would help prevent the spending of millions of dollars to advertise a program (such as the one described above) that doesn’t even exist, which, he said, is like flushing tax dollars down the toilet. We think this is an idea whose time has come, particularly when

you consider the Conservative government is projected to spend about $1 billion on advertising by the end of next year. Here’s how the program could, theoretically, work. All advertisements and marketing campaigns, whether it be to raise awareness or deliver important information, would be screened before being released to the public by a panel set up by the auditor general. One of the key mandates of the panel would be to flag any project that appears to be partisan waste. That is, if a particular ad campaign appears to bolster support for the government of the day, and nothing more, then it gets the axe. We would suggest taking it a step further in that even before mega-bucks are doled out to agencies for its creative work in the first place, a comprehensive and strategic communications plan be put forward to the panel for evaluation and approval. Then and only then should any cash change hands. There’s no sense in closing the barn door after the horse has left. We’re quite certain you won’t pop the cork on the champagne bottle when you read that this new ad panel put a stop to the airing of a commercial that already cost taxpayers $250,000 to create, for example. There have been reforms on this file since the dark days of the sponsorship scandal with regards to strengthening oversight, transparency and accountability on how our government advertises and markets what it does, but as a former prime minister once noted in a victory speech: “The Canadian dream is not complete, there is work to do”.

BOTTOM LINE: Liberal MP is on right track to cut wasteful spending, but don’t stop there.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Liberal leader’s cocktail party with local elites telling

Do homework on candidates

Re: Trudeau signs photo of his dad, Stouffville woman at fundraiser, article on yorkregion.com I was astonished to learn that dubious Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau had swung through Stouffville this past weekend. I decided to search for the photo op or announcement saying he would be in the neighbourhood, but to no avail. Not surprisingly, Mr. Trudeau was briefly here for a private cocktail reception with Markham-Stouffville Liberal hopeful Jane Philpott and few of the area’s elite for the small price of $500 a ticket. This really begs the question, do you actually care about the middle class, Mr. Trudeau? Or is it just convenient to say that in front of the camera? I am curious to know how Justin Trudeau actually plans on providing solutions for working-class Canadians when he simply sifts his way through private cocktail parties and “Ladies Nights” that the average Canadian cannot afford. Mr. Trudeau clearly does not understand the values of Canadians as he continues to pander to elitists everywhere he goes. Please do us a favour, Mr. Trudeau, and stop pretending like you care about helping the middle class.

Municipal government is the level of government that most directly affects your everyday life. When deciding who to vote for in the October 2014 municipal elections, please do your homework. This, to me, means attending a couple of council meetings this year to see how the present councillors perform individually and collectively. Try sending a question on an issue important to you to councillors and other candidates listed on your municipal website. You can phone, email, regular mail or question them at your door should they come knocking. You will see who responds quickly, who gives a real answer and who never responds. Don’t forget to ask questions of candidates for mayor, regional councillors and the often missed, school board trustees. Check your tax bill and you will see that about 25 cents of every tax dollar goes to the boards of education whether or not you have schoolage children. Make the time to have at least one family member attend one of the all-candidates meetings. Again, ask questions. In short make your vote worthwhile not just a popularity contest or because you like the sound of a name. Remember they will be making decisions on your behalf for the next four years.

Excellent Investment Opportunity

By Amanda Persico

apersico@yrmg.com

The Stouffville GO line that runs through Markham is a commutercentric rail service with trains travelling during morning and evening peak hours. But Metrolinx’s Big Move project has high hopes for the rail line that is expected to carry more than 5.8 million trips a year by 2023, up from about 3.2 million trips in 2012. With service upgrades, the line can become part of the overall Yonge Subway relief line expansion project. During Markham’s development services committee meeting Tuesday, council was provided with an update on environmental assessment for the Stouffville line between the Scarborough Junction and the Unionville GO Station that will allow for double tracking and all-day, everyday two-way service. “Right now, GO Transit is commuter focused,” GO Transit environmental assessment manager Trevor Anderson said. “Our goal is to provide a regional service that is fast and frequent like our Lakeshore line.” The line will be the transit spine for the area, connecting to other modes of transportation, including

Viva, LRT across Sheppard Avenue, Bloor Street subway and the Eglinton Crosstown LRT as well as GO Train services travelling eastbound into Durham Region, Mr. Anderson said. The environmental assessment looks at the infrastructure required to expand services along the Stouffville line, including double tracking in the corridor, upgrades to existing stations and developing connectivity between other transportation services. But there are several items not on GO Transit’s radar, said Peter Miasek, a Markham resident and president of Transport Action Ontario, a non-government organization advocating for sustainable public transportation. Missing from the environmental assessment study are: • GO Transit’s plan to extend services north of the Unionville GO Station, in particular to Major Mackenzie Drive as close to 60 per cent of passengers board north of the Unionville GO Station; • Electrification of the tracks; • Additional stations; • Road and rail separation to ensure safe rail crossing safety and promote whistle cessation options; and

• Rail and rail separation to ensure there is no ride interruption. “Electrification is gaining momentum,” Mr. Miasek said. “Electrification will come and it needs to be planned for. It needs more than lip service.” Electrification will also help with noise abatement and is more cost effective than standard tracks, he added. Additional stations along the Stouffville line could transform the commuter line into a surface subway, Mr. Miasek said. GO Transit is in the process of conducting an electrification study for its Lakeshore line, Mr. Anderson said. Track improvements will include enough clearance and platform requirements for future electrification. GO is also looking at rail crossing options and supports the city asking Transport Canada – the government body that overseas all railroad tracks – for an anti-train whistle zone within Markham. With the increase in train service, whistles are becoming more of a concern for residents in surrounding areas, ward Councillor Don Hamilton said.

The city has a train whistle committee and recently measured noise along the rail line. The study as well as funding options will come before the train whistle committee in the coming months. South of Steeles Avenue, GO trains do no sound the whistle at any level crossing, Mr. Hamilton said. “Here in Markham, the arms go down, the train blasts its horn not just once but four times,” he said. “This occurs at every level crossing at all times of the day or night.” Barrie had the same problem but was approved as a no-whistle zone a couple of years ago. To eliminate the train whistle, each crossing needs to be updated with pedestrian and vehicle barriers to ensure safety – something Barrie did several years ago. The cost to upgrade rail crossings in Markham is about $4 million, Mr. Hamilton added. While the goal is to have more service with less noise, there are some locations along the rail line that don’t fit the federal safety requirement, such as through historic Unionville. Any anti-whistle areas are greatly appreciated by local residents, Mr. Miasek said.

“I’m optimistic,” he said. “This will be such a relief for residents. In the areas where whistles are required, the city can make use of noise barriers. But one kilometre of noise barriers is better than 20 km.” Other issues brought up during the meeting include GO looking at structured parking instead of surface parking, creating stations that are mobility hubs with retail to help offset service costs, dedicated GO Transit pick-up shuttles, adding more stations and expediting service time lines. GO is hosting another round of public information centres to discuss the environmental assessment and preliminary designs for the Stouffville rail corridor.

GET INVOLVED There will be an information session Jan. 30 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Angus Glen Community Centre, 3390 Major Mackenzie Dr. To add your comments to the EA study or to be included on the project email list contact Georgina Collymore 416-8693600 or georgina.collymore@metrolinx.com For more information, visit gotransit.com and click on expansion projects. Vaughan concrete companies cleared in price-fixing probe By Jeremy Grimaldi

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

An investigation into price-fixing by Vaughan concrete companies has come to an end after the probe failed to find sufficient evidence of wrongdoing. The probe was discontinued because it was unable to prove “beyond a reasonable doubt” that there was an agreement or arrangement to fix, artificially enhance or rig bids, said Gabrielle Tasse, com-

munications representative for Canada’s Competition Bureau. The investigation into the companies, which build basement foundations for new homes in the suburbs, began in March 2012 and was completed in early January, according to Ms Tasse. A number of offices in Woodbridge, Concord and elsewhere in Vaughan were raided as part of the investigation. The case centred on whether or not the companies were conspiring

been completed. There was no response to calls to the Hwy. 7 and Pine Valley Drive offices Wednesday.

to raise prices above market value or making it difficult for customers to seek out competitive bids. The investigation began after complaints were received about price-fixing in the industry throughout Toronto and the vicinity, Ms Tasse added. York Region Media Group was contacted this week by the Residential Lowrise Forming Contractors Association of Metro Toronto and Vicinity, located in Vaughan, notifying the paper the investigation had

near Islington Avenue and Rutherford Road and the second near Weston Road and Major Mackenzie Drive, all between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. With temperatures dropping, police are witnessing more of this type of crime and estimate there have been more than 15 similar incidents so far this season. The Insurance Bureau of Canada estimates the cost of stolen cars to Canadians each year as $600 million.

Clear your vehicle of snow before driving or face fine

It’s Auto Show Season. 3 Payments Waived. For a limited time, take advantage of these great offers.

Squinting through a small opening in a frosted windshield is not only unsafe but illegal, South Simcoe Police warn, adding your shoddy job could net you a $110 fine. The police force and others across the province, including York Regional Police, remind you to clear all the snow off your vehicle before driving. The Highway Traffic Act requires you to have a clear view to the front and sides, as well as a clear view to the

rear, either with use of side or rearview mirrors. Police warn that when you fail to remove all snow, ice and frost from your windshield, you put yourself and others at risk. Snow left on a vehicle will trail off the car making it harder for those behind you to see. Ice, snow and dirt must also be removed from headlights and taillights. The law requires your vehicle to have sufficient light

from your headlights that it can be seen 150 metres away and for you to see 110 metres in front. Taillights must also be visible to approaching vehicles from 150 metres away. Police ask you to warm up your cars to remove frost from windows. Additionally, you should remove snow from all surfaces of the car, which will ensure your windshield and windows remain clear. Make sure your washer fluid is topped up.

When it comes to health care, your doctor isn’t the only one is charge. You, the patient, are in as much control as your doctor. That is the message behind former health care professional, Melissa Nichols’ first book, Day by Day. The book started out as a journal of sorts, helping the Markham resident keep the days straight while relearning how to perform basic functions, such as standing and walking. In 2011, Ms. Nichols, then 28, started to complain about headaches and blurry vision. She ended up having emergency surgery to remove a blockage at the back of her head. Following surgery, she learned it was a brain tumour. She spent weeks in the hospital recovering, followed by weeks in a rehab centre where she required a wheelchair and had to re-learn walking. “Writing became very therapeutic for me,” Ms Nichols said. “Writing down what happened on this day helped me keep the days straight. I was very vulnerable and confused, so writing was just for me.” What started as a collection of dates and point form notes morphed into a story about the instant transformation from a healthy go-getter, to a dependent patient and the road to recovery. Initially, the book was intended for her family, but it was her sister who convinced Ms Nichols to publish. Through Kickstarter, an online funding forum for creative projects, Ms Nichols has raised more than $4,200 to help offset the costs of selfpublishing. With a background in health care, her story offers a different perspective for patients on how to be a better patient and how to take control of your health care. “As the person receiving the care, you should be an active member in the care plan,” Ms Nichols said. “You have a meeting with the doctor. Not an appointment.” A meeting implies dialogue from

both sides, while a doctor’s appointment insinuates the doctor talking to you not with you, she added. Another tip is to start a pain journal and write notes on how you’re feeling. Whenever you have a question, write it down. You could also type up the notes to give to your doctor. “People always say, they don’t want to take up too much of the doctor’s time,” Ms Nichols said. “Asking questions is not a waste of time. When you go into the doctor’s office, you always forget something. So write it down. You want to leave the office feeling like you understand what the doctor said.” She also advises patients not to feel ashamed when asking for help. “The best support is the practical support,” she said. “Ego has nothing to do with asking for a ride to your medical appointment or asking a friend to fax or mail something for you.” The Day by Day Kickstarter campaign ended earlier this week. CLASS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT STUDY Road Crossing of Highway 404

Between 16th Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive Town of Richmond Hill and City of Markham The Regional Municipality of York is initiating a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) Study for a proposed road crossing of Highway 404 between 16th Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive. This proposed crossing will better serve transit, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and will help manage increasing traffic resulting from continued growth in York Region. This Class EA Study is being conducted in accordance with Schedule C of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment document (October 2000, as amended). The Class EA Study process will include public and government agency consultation, identification and evaluation of alternative solutions, an assessment of the effects of the proposed improvements and identification of measures required to reduce potential impacts. At the end of the Class EA study, an Environmental Study Report (ESR) will be produced and provide information on the recommended solution, the Class EA Study process, the identified effects and proposed mitigation measures. The ESR will be available for a 30-day public review, a separate notice of the ESR will be provided at the end of the Class EA Study. Public consultation is important and will inform each phase of the Class EA Study. Two Public Consultations are planned and separate notices will be issued prior to each of these events. Lightwire Theatre - the America’s Got Talent

Steps to Success 1. Think about what you want to do and why. 2. Call an EatRight Ontario dietitian and pick a goal together. 3. Record your goal in eaTracker and get a weekly reminder to keep you on track. 4. Call EatRight Ontario back and let us know how you’re doing!

Did you know that people who record what they eat are more successful in losing weight? You can do this with eaTracker, a free online tool at eatrightontario.ca/en/eaTracker.

Top three dietitian approved weight management tips: 1. Use a smaller plate or glass. You naturally eat what’s on your plate so you’ll eat or drink less with a smaller dish or cup.

2. Shop wisely.

You can’t eat what you don’t have in your home.

3. Watch the portion size of your large bagel, muffin or sandwich. Eating only half may be enough.

“We encourage callers to set realistic goals they can stick with. They’re already doing some things well, but we can help when they get stuck. We can be part of their team.” Rita Barbieri, EatRight Ontario dietitian

A club member since its inception, Churchill performed in the club’s first ice show produced in 1965. Along with offering figure skating, adults at all levels can take lessons and their power skating program has had NHL stars including Markham resident Jeff Skinner and former Markham resident Stephen Weiss pass through its ranks. The club is also creating a historical archive as part of its anniversary celebrations. Alumni skaters, coaches or parents who have photos or memorabilia to share, are asked to email info@ markhamskatingclub.com

Rugby player, 17, takes to pitch with men’s squad in Vegas BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Andrew Coe believes age doesn’t really matter. The Markham resident took to the rugby pitch at the Las Vegas Seven’s competition this week. It’s one of the largest amateur rugby events in North

America with more than 240 teams in 25 divisions. Coe could easily be playing in a group for players his own age. But the 17-year-old will be playing at the highest competitive level as a member of the men’s Canadian Maple Leafs squad.

As the youngest on the 11-member squad, Coe said he is looking forward to the opportunity, regardless of how much playing time he may receive. “I feel very honoured to go to such a prestigious tournament to represent my country,” he said. “I might

He was chosen to attend a training camp in British Columbia in September where he caught the attention of the coaching staff and was on a short list to go on tour to Las Vegas. Another member of the Markham Irish Canadian Rugby Football Club, Troy Matthews, will be competing in the Las Vegas Seven’s event. Matthews was one of 12 players between 15 and 17 selected for the provincial team that will compete in the Boys High School Elite Division. The division features teams from Canada and the United States to compete in the tournament that concludes Saturday.

Children at a Markham elementary school committed to reducing, reusing and recycling for lunch made a significant contribution to Ontario’s waste diversion efforts during Waste Reduction Week. Sponsored by the Carton Council of Canada, the Waste-Free Lunch Challenge helps schools decrease the amount of garbage they generate and educates students, teachers and parents about smart consumption and waste reduction. Taking part was Markham’s Ellen Fairclough Public School, one of 20 winning schools in Ontario. A total of 700 classrooms or schools from 56 school boards took an active role in waste minimization by utilizing reusable, refillable and recyclable containers for lunch. Participating schools kept nearly 16,000 kg of lunch material from entering landfill – equivalent to 35 grand pianos — during the week. Schools sorted, weighed and recorded their lunchtime waste generation before Waste Reduction Week to establish a baseline and then again during Waste Reduction Week to measure the difference.

This season was supposed to see the St. Brother Andre Catholic High School Cardinals senior boys’ hockey team in rebuilding mode. The two-time defending York Region Athletic Association tier one champions’ roster had just four Grade 12 players with the remainder in grades 10 and 11. In a way it has been a time for rebuilding, said veteran Cardinals’ head coach Dave Turner. But with the team skating off with first place regular season honours in the East Division with a 9-0-1-19 record, capped off with a hard-fought 3-1 road win over the Stouffville District Secondary School Spartans last Thursday, they’ve learned the game at an accelerated pace. “It’s been a giant learning experience for them and I’m happy with the way they’ve responded.” The coach praised the entire team’s attitude and thirst for hockey knowledge for their rapid ascent up the YRAA ladder. “They’ve bought into what we (coaches including longtime assistant Paul Titanic) have been trying to teach them,” he said. “They’ve been a good group to work with.” They’ve developed a good chemistry, starting in goal where they’ve alternated Emilio Gallernero and Alex Tashos. “Both of our goalies have been solid all year,” Turner said.

Turner said they carry three defence pairings who compliment each other well. Up front, Turner said the trio of Nolan Regan, Cory Vignieux and Damien Heinle were handling the majority of scoring early on. But lately, they’ve received a more balanced attack with timely contributions coming from all of their lines. Another intangible that has attributed to their success has been determination. Competing in a highly competitive East Division which includes the likes of Bill Crothers, Stouffville District and Newmarket High along with playing in some high-calibre tournaments, have enabled the Cardinals to maintain their focus. “There’s been no quit with this group,” Turner said. “I don’t think we’ve been blown out of any games since early in the year when we lost a game to Sir Oliver Mowat (Scarborough) in a tournament.” As for trying to capture a third straight YRAA title, Turner said it won’t be easy. But if things go their way, they could be among the teams vying for that coveted crown and a berth in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAAA playdowns. “All of the teams are pretty even,” he said. “But I think we could be in the mix. It will come down to good goaltending and a break here and there,” he said.

St. Brother Andre’s Arizona Illodgwe races up court against Jean Vanier’s Justin Ng in high school basketball action last week. SBA players would go on to celebrate what they perceived was their 57-54 buzzerbeater victory. However, they were penalized with two technical fouls (four shots) for ripping off their jerseys while celebrating. The game went into overtime, where St. B.A. lost, 67-64. Markham man in Sochi para games Chris Williamson was among 13 athletes named to Canada’s para-alpine ski team that will compete at the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games in Sochi March 7 to 16, Alpine Canada and the Canadian Paralympic Committee announced Tuesday. The 41-year-old Markham resident, who is visually impaired, will be one of the veteran performers on the 2014 team having appeared in three prior Paralympics.

Williamson has reached the medal podium three times. Once was during his debut when he raced his way to a gold from the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City. Along with his paralympic appearances, Williamson has reached the IPC World Cup podium 105 times. Most recently was last year when he won the slalom event at the 2013 IPC World Cup finals in Sochi. Williamson has won 13 IPC world championship medals, two of them gold. — Michael Hayakawa

It appears hard work has its dividends. Just ask Markham resident Breanne Wilson-Bennett, 17, who recently accepted a scholarship opportunity to attend school and play hockey next fall for the women’s varsity team at Colgate University. “I am very excited to have had all my hard work pay off and have my education looked after,” the Grade 12 Bill Crothers Secondary School student said. A forward with the Toronto Junior Aeros and member of the Ontario Red squad that captured the recent National Under-18 Women’s Hockey Championship title, WilsonBennett’s exploits on the ice were identified relatively early as she received her first recruiting letter as a Grade 8 student. Since then, she noted numerous universities began keeping tabs on her progress. They included prestigious Ivy League schools such as Yale and Princeton. What influenced WilsonBennett on accepting Colgate’s offer was a visit she took to their Hamilton, N.Y., campus. While enjoying what the school had to offer from an academic perspective, where she plans on majoring in education or history and working towards a career in teaching, she was equally impressed in with their coaching staff and their expectations of the impact she could make as a first-year player..

BREANNE WILSON-BENNETT: Markham teen says hard work made U.S. scholarship happen. “As soon as I saw Colgate’s campus and met with coaching staff I knew right away that it was right for me,” she recalled. “I liked what the coaching staff stood for. They think hard work and grit is what it’s all about and I really like that.” It also did not hurt that the school is relatively close to her Markham residence. Making her house league debut at the age of four before moving up to the rep ranks just two years later with the Markham Waxers boys’ super sevens and then playing with the Waxers AAAs and South Central Coyotes before switching to girls hockey with the Toronto Aeros, WilsonBennett was quick to credit a number of people in helping her fulfill her objective. The most prominent is her mother, Sharlene. “I can confidently say that my mom is definitely the reason I have gotten this far and where I am today,” she said. “As a single mother it was a struggle to put me into sports yet she always managed to

find a way no matter what because she knew how much I loved it. “She provides me with such support in everything I do whether it be sports, academic endeavours or anything else that I strive for. She encourages me in ways that nobody else can.” She also noted a number of coaches who have enhanced her on-ice skills. “Coaches like Rob Binetti, Paul Gottschalk, Dennis Dunn, Adam Lamarre and Vito Cramarossa have coached me over the years and I give them so much credit for inspiring me and showing me the true beauty of the game,” she said. Also adept in playing other sports including a stint where she was one of the youngest members of the Canadian women’s baseball team and an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations triple gold medallist in javelin during each of her first three years at Crothers, Wilson-Bennett knew all along hockey would be the winning ticket to what her future would hold. “I knew hockey was what was going to get me a scholarship and a good education — universities do not have women’s baseball. I have only recently been contacted for a scholarship for javelin and by that time I had already committed to Colgate,” she said. “I also love hockey and it is my true passion. Since I was a little girl I’ve had a dream to play in the Olympics and I will stop at nothing to get there.”

Tennis player Sleeth, 12 serves up win in Florida Layne Sleeth served up a storm when she ventured to Florida to compete in a couple of tennis tournaments last month. Taking to the court for the Little Mo International Tennis Tournament, the 12-year-old Markham resident won the championship

after defeating Viktoriya Tabunshchyk of Canada 6-1, 6-2. In reaching the final, the Grade 7 Buttonville Public School student defeated top seed Najah Dawson of the United States 6-2, 6-0 in her semifinal match. Upon conclusion of that event, Sleeth went to Miami to compete in the Orange Bowl Tourmament. Shotbolt cages honours at Carleton University Lindsay Shotbolt’s recent actions on the hardwood court as a member of the Carleton University Ravens women’s basketball team

drew rave notices. Helping lead the first-place Ravens to a pair of victories in Ontario University Athletics action last weekend, the six-foot Markham resident was named the Ottawabased school’s female athlete of the week for the period ending Jan. 19. Among Shotbolt’s accomplishments was a 13-point, 13-rebound effort in a hard-fought 57-56 over the visiting University of Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday. One day earlier, Shotbolt poured in eight points and hauled down six rebounds to help the Ravens edge visiting Ryerson University 54-52. The victories improved the Ravens’ record to 10-3 on the season. Currently in her second year at Carleton, Shotbolt is majoring in communications.

Personal Prayer To The Holy Spirit Holy Spirit Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one's wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favor has been granted.
