The president of York Region’s public elementary teacher federation is predicting a record setting vote in two weeks in favour of strike
action. David Clegg said records are being set across the province as teachers go to the polls to express their anger over the Liberals’ antistrike wage-freeze legislation.
The lowest result was 97 per cent in support of strike and York’s 4,800 elementary teachers, set to vote for the first time in the federation’s history at the same local meeting Oct. 4, are expected to come out
similarly strong, he said. York Region’s high school teachers take their strike votes Monday. It will be up to the unions to See ‘MADE’, page 34.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words — and then some. When James Greenhalgh occupies his regular seat directly above the Toronto Blue Jays’ dugout at the Rogers Centre, he loves to take photographs of the action on the field, purely as a hobby. He has shot close to 10,000 photographs so far this season — although one stands out from the rest. Using his recently purchased Nikon D60 camera equipped with a 55/200 lens, the 37-year-old Markham resident took a photo of Blue Jays’ second baseman Yunel Escobar during last Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox — a photograph that created a whirlwind of controversy earlier this week.
LOVE FOR TEAM The close-up photo of Escobar revealed words in Spanish inscribed on the black anti-glare tape placed under his eyes which read “tu ere maricon”. After doing a Google search and confirming the meaning with a friend who is fluent in Spanish, Greenhalgh was angered to find the words (which translate into English as “you are a faggot”) distasteful and homophobic. He said he struggled with

2 more cases of West Nile virus in York Region Two more confirmed human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in York Region. This brings the total number to three as of last Friday. Two men, 45 and 75, in Vaughan and one man, 76, in Newmarket are recovering at home, York associate medical officer of health Dr. Lilian Yuan said Monday. The region no longer discloses specific locations of probable or confirmed cases. “It’s all over York Region,” Dr. Yuan said. In August, a 54-year-old Markham woman was reported as the region’s first probable human case. She is recovering at home in Thornhill and her case has not been confirmed as West Nile virus. Hers is one of six probable human cases in Vaughan, Newmarket and Markham, pending lab testing. Due to an increase in mosquitoes this year caused by hot and humid temperatures that create better breeding conditions, labs are extremely busy and testing time can vary from case to case, Dr. Yuan said. The total number of mosquito pools testing positive for West Nile virus in the region

It’s that time again. Time to gear up for the annual Markham Fair, which is Sept. 27 to 30. In keeping with the 168-year tradition, the fair features old-time favourites such as farm animals, handmade crafts, preserves and baked goods, monster truck demonstrations and farm competitions. That’s the fair’s staple, fair general manager John Peco said. “Those events are why people come out,”
he said. “That’s why we’re here, to celebrate agriculture.” This is your chance to thank a farmer for your meal, he said. “Many don’t have that connection with the land,” Mr. Peco said. “Everyone is so concerned with food security. Local farms is where our food comes from.” This year proved to be both rewarding and challenging for farmers. Due to the warm weather followed by a drop in temperature early in the year, many fruit and orchard farmers lost their crops, Mr. Peco said. The opposite is true for many grain farmers.

But a farmer is the eternal optimist.” While tried and true is key, there are some new events taking place this year. In honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, there will be a high tea pavilion featuring traditional British crumpets served on fine china.
There will also be demonstrations by the Canadian Armed Forces and a military tattoo featuring several marching bands and the Governor General’s horse guard. Thursday is York Region school day where hundreds of schools from across the region will have a chance to enjoy the traditional fair as well as special pep rally in the morning. On Saturday, popular band Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker (USS) will take the stage pumping out dance floor beats mixed with ska and jungle music. The band features the sounds of Markham’s Ash Buchultz and Whitchurch-Stouffville’s Jason Parsons.

NOTICE OF STUDY The City of Markham has initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) to identify and prioritize opportunities to improve the management of stormwater within the City. Improvements may be achieved through the retrofit of existing stormwater management (SWM) facilities and/or through the construction of new SWM facilities in areas that are currently lacking appropriate controls. Once the problem is fully documented, a set of alternative solutions will be evaluated and presented to the public and agencies for comment at various points throughout the study. A prioritized list of SWM facilities retrofit and new construction opportunities will be developed. The study will also identify mitigative measures to reduce impacts of the resulting proposed work. A key component of the study will be consultation with interested stakeholders (public, landowners and regulatory agencies). Two Public Information Centres (PIC’s) will be held to provide interested parties with an opportunity to review and discuss issues related to the study. The first PIC is scheduled for the winter of 2012. Details regarding the forthcoming PIC will be advertised in local newspapers and on the City’s website as the study progresses. The study will be conducted as a ‘Schedule B’ project in compliance with the Municipal Engineers Association document “Municipal Class Environmental Assessment,” (October 2000, amended in 2007 & 2011) that will address Phases 1 and 2 of the Class EA Process. We are interested in hearing any comments or input that you may have about this study. Comments and information regarding the study are being collected to assist the City of Markham in meeting the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. This material will be maintained on file for use during the study and may be included in study documentation. Police are investigating after a home invasion in Markham Monday afternoon on Clarke Avenue. At about 3 p.m., a woman knocked on an apartment door and waved a piece of paper, which was seen through the peephole by one of the victims. When the door was open, five men forced their way in and assaulted two men. Police are looking for a black man and a Persian man. Both were wearing black-hooded sweatshirts and shorts. We’ve sold these amazing turkeys now for 23 years. Although the farm has changed hands from father to son, it’s the same growing and processing technique that produces what we — and others — feel are the best turkeys available. What makes them so good? It’s simple, really. Firstly, they eat lots of grain and corn — as much or as little as they want, because they run loose. Counting crossing guards
Is it right for the City of Markham to examine whether or not crossing guards are needed during the lunch hour at 37 schools? Yes it is, as long as the review is done with care and with the students’ safety and parents’ wishes in mind. There really should be no sacred cows when it comes to the spending of taxpayers’ money. Money and people can be reallocated elsewhere to make the best use of what we have, rather than having crossing guards where there are no children to guard. Some might argue that if even one child is coming home for lunch and crossing at an intersection near the school, a crossing guard should be there to help them. But is this reasonable? Is it fair for parents and students and some 45 other schools in Markham where crossing guards are only on duty in the morning before school and the afternoon when school lets out? These schools seem to be managing. According to a report presented to city councillors last week, there is a set of criteria that spells out how many children would need to cross
at a given intersection to warrant having a crossing guard. In some of the older areas of town, a different criteria was used. The result is there are some locations where, with a change in demographics as well as fewer students in the younger grades, guards are guarding very few, or in some instances, no children at lunch. This seems to be the norm in many parts of Markham as it is, with both parents working and the days of a stay-at-home parent serving up a hot lunch long gone. If a school is down to just one or two kids heading home for lunch and a TV or video game session, it would make sense to inform all families that there will no longer be a lunch-hour crossing guard with children expected to remain at school for a supervised lunch. Of course, if there are more children crossing at lunch hour, guards are still needed. Let’s let the study be done, consult parents and then try to abide by the findings. Our kids are seeing enough upheaval in their school lives when it comes to their education. Let’s hope we can get it right when it comes to crossing guards.
MADD York Region needs a little volunteer help
A
t the beginning of this year, I wrote a column stating the MADD York Region chapter was fighting for its existence and needed new volunteers to stay active. At that time, the Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter had only two positions filled on its executive and was on “life support”. I asked readers “is MADD relevant in our community?” and you responded very positively. The meeting room at the York Regional Police station in Richmond Hill was filled to capacity at the next meeting, with people eager to sign on to participate and ensure the anti-drinking and driving message was heard, loud and clear, across York Region communities. I felt a personal need to help support this group and have been attending monthly meetings to publicize their community events and activities. MADD York Region needs our help again. As chance would have it, the woman who agreed to lead the group
Marney Beck and assume the president role, Dayna Switzer of Richmond Hill, went back to school this fall and can not continue her volunteer duties. Another member of the executive, Paolo Pecchia of Maple, has stepped up to the plate and agreed to take on the president’s job. Other members of the executive are grateful he has agreed to fill this key role. They include Jessica Seymour, a passionate young woman who handles public speaking engagements
with schools and other organizations; Micheline Cassidy, the treasurer; and Margaret Williams, who handles public education and victim support and sits on the national board. Each of these women has had her own tragic interaction with a drunk driver. Jessica lost her leg; Micheline her daughter and Margaret her younger sister. For these women and all other members of the MADD chapter, working to fight drinking driving in the community is more than a cause, it’s a personal fight; a painful passion. And don’t think because of the name Mothers Against Drunk Driving that there are no men backing this group. Navid Afsharian is vice president, Nathan McMillan provides computer and web support and Doug Strong has agreed to assume the court watchdog role, keeping the chapter and national body updated on court proceedings as charged drivers face justice for the mayhem they commit on our roads.

People such as Allstate Insurance agency manager from Markham, Antoinetta Zambri, who has agreed to be the chapter secretary. In my opinion, the group also needs new blood to ensure the small group of committed members don’t burn out trying to do and be everything. If you can help with office support duties, can volunteer a few hours at public events, would like to participate in a holiday safe ride home project in December or would like to come to a meeting and find out what MADD York Region is all about, consider this your invitation. The next meeting is Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at the York Regional Police station in Richmond Hill (on Major Mackenzie, just west of Yonge Street).

Volunteers from across the country will be cleaning up local shorelines this week in one of the largest environmental events in Canada. The Shoreline Cleanup promotes healthy aquatic life by clearing debris, garbage and litter from local rivers, streams, creeks and wetlands. Since 2003, more than 400,000 participants have removed nearly one million kilograms of garbage from our shorelines. Last year, more than 41,000 kilgrams of litter and garbage was picked up along shorelines in Ontario, including some peculiar items, including a payphone, rice cooker, wedding dress, pregnancy test, motorcycle parts, shopping carts and clothing. There are several locations in Markham still in need of site co-ordinators, including Apple Creek Boulevard, Milne Park and Cricklewood Park in Thornhill. Volunteers are encouraged to bring extra garbage bags, rubber gloves and rain boots, as some work is needed in shallow water areas. Last year, more than 17,000 volunteers helped clean up more than 1,000 kilometres of shoreline in the province. Here is what they picked up: 41,918 – kilograms of litter removed from shorelines; 334,066 – items removed from shorelines; 3,954 – filled garbage bags; 1,748 – filled recycle bags; 38,344 – food wrappers and containers; 25,456 – plastic bags; 105,602 – cigarettes and cigarette filters were picked up, along with 6,627 cigar tips and 7,345 tobacco packaging; 28,186 – bottle caps and cup lids; 24,894 – plastic bottles; 17,537 – soda cans; 14,858 – cups, plates, forks and knives; and 14,062 – straws and coffee stir sticks

York Region is partnering with the country’s largest food retailer in an attempt to eliminate traditional plastic grocery bags for good. Five Loblaws stores in the region have been chosen as test locations to roll out a compostable bag pilot starting Monday. They are the Fortinos on Major Mackenzie Drive in Vaughan, the Loblaws on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill, the Superstore on Bayview Avenue in Aurora, the Superstore on Yonge Street in East Gwillimbury and the Zehrs on Woodbine Avenue in Keswick.

The two-month pilot will test the compostable shopping bags, which will be offered for 15 cents at checkouts. The bags comprise 40 per cent renewable plant-based materials and match the durability, size and reusability of plastic bags that sell for five cents at stores. “I think people will figure out the math pretty quickly,” Claudio Gemmiti of Loblaw
Companies Ltd. told the region’s environmental services committee. The cheapest compostable bag on the market now is 10 cents, he said. “They are getting a pretty robust, sturdy bag for 15 cents,” Mr. Gemmiti said, adding the company is relying on people to realize they are getting a good value. By charging five cents for plastic shopping bags, Loblaws has reduced the number of bags from its stores by 71 per cent across the country. York council implemented mandatory use of certified compostable bags in its green bin program last year. It will be a hard decision for many people at the counter between buying a five-cent plastic bag and a 15-cent compostable bag, regional chairperson Bill Fisch said. Markham Deputy Mayor Jack Heath agreed, adding there may be even be some resistance to the charge. But Richmond Hill Deputy Mayor Vito Spatafora, who is chairperson of the region’s environmental services committee, maintained it’s important the pilot gets a good run in any case. “We are trying to get rid of film plastic,” he said. “It doesn’t deteriorate... It has impact on our wildlife.”

whether or not to post the photograph on his Flickr account, in part because of his love for the Blue Jays and being a first year season’s ticket holder. Greenhalgh eventually decided to post the image, along with others he took at the game. The Escobar picture found its way into cyberspace where local media outlets quickly got wind of it. The Blue Jays, after conferring with Major League Baseball and the Major League Players Association, suspended Escobar without pay for three games, they officially announced Tuesday. With Escobar losing close to $90,000 in wages, his pay is to go to two organizations: You Can Play and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). Noting he did not wish to receive any glory or seek attention for his actions, Greenhalgh, an accountant by profession, felt it was in the best interests of all to voice his disapproval for Escobar’s actions. The last thing he thought would happen, though, were the reverberations that extended beyond the borders of Toronto. “I just felt it was the right thing
to do,” he said. “Besides being interviewed by the Toronto media like Canada AM, I’ve even been contacted by Fox Sports Boston and a friend of mine said he even saw my name on Al Jazeera news. “I’m surprised at where this has gone. It’s been overwhelming and a crazy last 24 hours.” It even reached the point where Greenhalgh said he was offered money for the photograph. He declined. “I’m not in this for the fame or money,” he said. “I’m in it for the right thing. For my beliefs.” Reflecting on his actions, Greenhalgh said if he could do things over again, he might have considered conferring with the Blue Jays directly at first rather than go the route he did. “I might have told the Blue Jays that I have this picture and ask if you can assure me you will talk with Yunel (Escobar) first,” he said. Citing he’s received positive and negative feedback for his actions, Greenhalgh revealed he has some reservations for his safety if he elects to attend the final seven home games of the season. With that in mind and considering Escobar’s actions, he’s still debating whether he will go to those games against the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins.

By Janice Lee All end of the world jokes aside, the 2012 Markham Fair certainly has something for everyone, so do your planning accordingly, as you, your family, and friends do not want to miss out! There are four action-packed days of the Markham Fair, and surely there is something here for you to take part in, whether being a child, teen, adult, or senior! Markham Fair is thrilled to welcome back the Motorsports Mania Monster Truck Show. This highoctane show will not only be on Thursday night, but will be also ripping up the race track on Sunday. Be sure to get there early to ensure a seat in the stands, and be ready to cheer on Bounty Hunter, Iron Outlaw, After Shock, and Krazy Train! Thursday will be a great night for local bands, at the Indie Night, follow your ears to Markham’s very own Future History. Everyone looks forward to Friday, the start of the weekend, and the day of some great attractions at the Markham Fair. New this year, if you are in need of some gardening tips, drop by the Agri Food Tent, as Mark Cullen will be there educating Markham Fair goers. The Friday Night Show is back with all its splendour with the President’s Choice Super Dogs. There are 3 chances to catch this tail wagging show! Remember, if you like to dance, check out the Mega Video Screen Dance! Just thinking about Saturday makes you want to get there early! The Baby Contest, and the night belongs to the Demolition Derby! The Crow’s Corral will be off the hook with USS (Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker), be sure to get there early, and have your ID! Markham Fair will also be trying to make a record. Not the scratching kind, but a Guinness World Record, and all to do with the speed of husking corn! The final day at Markham Fair has two special guests, Dreamworks Shrek and Fiona will be meet-
ing and greeting with fans, just follow the odour, I mean ogre! Live music by With the Dudes will be for all ears Sunday afternoon in the Crow’s Corral. Enjoy the sights of the Royal Air Force Marching Band, and if you are one to be stumped with words, check out the children’s spelling bee! You will not have to worry, because there are some events that happen all four days of the Markham Fair, just make sure to check out the schedule to see when and where they may be taking place. From miniature to enormous working breeds, be sure to watch the Cavalcade of Horses trot before your eyes. New this year, Elephant Thoughts is a creative hands on experience where you get to learn the ins and outs of a polar bear, leatherback turtle, or harlequin duck! Looking for some excitement, head over to the Jump action show, where dance crews take stage, and Parkour leaps to limitless bounds. Going strong all four days to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee is the Diamond Jubilee Tea Room which will feature scones, finger sandwiches, and fruit! Be sure to dress according to Fair weather, but do bring your dress hat or fascinator if you desire. Be sure to check out the Make your Own Fascinator/ Crown area in the Tea Room to create your own royal moment! On the weekend, free face painting by the fantastically talented Picasso and friends in the Entertainment Tent. Also on the weekend, if you are between the ages of 6 and 106 check out the Body Zorbs area where you can flip and flop, and not feel a thing! At dusk, be sure to raise your eyes to the sky where you will be amazed by fireworks (Thursday, Friday, & Saturday only)! Metroland Media/Wheelstalk.com Toyota will use the Paris Motor Show to take the wraps off a comprehensively renewed range of models for the European family/compact car market with the world-first presentation of the new Auris hatchback and Auris Tourer. The new Auris could give a glimpse at the next generation North American Matrix. In Europe it will be available with gasoline, diesel and full hybrid power. Moreover, Toyota expects a roughly equal one-third split in the European sales mix for each engine type, reflecting how it has successfully moved hybrid to the mainstream. In the UK, the sales mix for hybrid is expected to be even higher, approaching 40 per cent. The revised Hybrid Synergy Drive
system in new Auris Hybrid will deliver class-leading efficiency, with power to CO2 emissions ratio of more than 1.5 hp for each g/km. Toyota Tourer adds a station wagon car body style to the Auris range for the first time, with the introduction of the new Auris Tourer. It will be the first model in its class to offer the choice of full hybrid power, as well as gasoline and diesel engines, and it will give Toyota representation in part of the market that currently accounts for around 25 per cent of core European compact/C-segment car sales. The Tourer’s styling follows similar cues to its hatchback sister model, but without compromising load space.

Tundra pickup to tow space shuttle on last journey
Metroland Media/Wheelstalk.com Toyota has announced its Tundra full-size pickup truck will tow the space shuttle Endeavour during its final journey to the California Science Center. The Endeavour is to travel a total of 12 miles on October 12 from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on city streets to the Science Center, with the Tundra towing the last quarter mile. Tested extensively prior to the announcement, the 2012 Tundra was slated to safely tow the 300,000 pound historic artifact down Bill Robertson Lane in Exposition Park, near downtown Los Angeles, on the final leg of its journey.
Endeavour will be towed using a stock 2012 Tundra CrewMax 1/2–ton pickup, identical to models currently found in Toyota dealerships, with no additional modifications made to increase towing capacity or generate more power. The Tundra CrewMax is equipped with Toyota’s powerful 5.7-litre V8 engine, producing a maximum tow capacity of 10,000 pounds. Toyota has done extensive testing and worked with The Sarens Group, a heavy lifting and engineered transport company, to develop a dolly specifically for hauling the Endeavour.

The three-door joins the five-door hatchback and the Tourer to extend the broad appeal of Hyundai’s ‘made for Europe’ C-segment range to an even wider audience. Central to the appeal of the three-door is its distinctive, sporty styling. Incorporating Hyundai’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ form language, the new model’s sharply-raked beltline, more angular glasshouse silhouette and longer front doors provide it with a more dynamic profile, and the effect is enhanced by changes to front and rear styling. A new, black-finished mesh insert and central bar accentuate Hyundai’s hexagonal grille, which is flanked by new, sportier fog lamp clusters consisting of round spots connected to LED daytime running light strips. The mesh treatment is continued in the clusters, and the front end design is completed by a newly profiled lower bumper. The New Generation i30 three-door retains the positive characteristics of the five-door, providing high standards of quality, equipment and comfort. Drivers will experience European-tuned ride and handling, and can alter the settings of the FLEX STEER system to change steering assistance depending on their preference and prevailing conditions.

Julia Gartha’s survival depends on her popularity and she is fighting for her life. The 17-year-old Unionville High School student is a finalist on the CBC’s new reality TV Show, Over the Rainbow, which started Sunday. She is competing for the chance to play Dorothy in the Canadian stage production of the Wizard of Oz. The eight-week series began with a two-hour performance show, followed by a results show Monday. Ms Gartha was ranked among the bottom two out of 10 contestants for having the fewest number of votes. She had to perform a “sing- off” with competitor Kelsey Verzotti. Then, it was up to Andrew Lloyd Webber to choose between the two girls. He chose Ms Gartha, so she still has a chance to become Dorothy in the stage production. Ms Gartha was sad to see Ms Verzotti go since she had been Ms Gartha’s roommate during the

Previous to the show beginning, she couldn’t reveal Ms Gartha was a finalist, she said, emphasizing that it is important now to garner support. Ms Fitzpatrick visited the Markham mayor’s office Monday to see if the city will support her bid for the title of Dorothy and is waiting to hear back. With one more year to complete high school, theatre has been a big part of Ms Gartha’s life, performing in productions of Peter Pan, Willy Wonka, Cats and Fame as part of the Unionville Theatre Company. Her biggest inspiration, she says, is her older sister, Isabelle, who was born deaf and attends Alexander Mackenzie High School in Richmond Hill. The musical, starring the winning Dorothy, opens at the Ed Mirvish Theatre this December. The show airs on CBC Sundays. Canadian viewers will be asked to vote for their favourite Dorothy and on Mondays, the two contestants with the least votes will battle it out in a sing-off. The judges will save one and send one home.

The International Festival of Authors has chosen Markham for the second year in a row as one of its two touring event locations in the GTA. Teachers could walk off the job, he said, leaving it to cabinet to intervene directly, something the recently passed legislation gives it power to do. Should that happen, he said, teachers’ current haphazard withdrawal of volunteer work will intensify, he said, and “chaos will ensue”. Until those votes are taken, the labour dispute is in limbo and teachers are making individual choices whether to continue with sports teams, extracurricular clubs and other extra duties, he said. “McGuinty completely underestimated the damage being inflicted on public education in the province,” he said. “It speaks to the fundamental lack of understanding that it’s the goodwill of teachers that makes the system work.” The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation encouraged its members to wear black this past Tuesday in protest, and on Monday members of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario were urged not to take part in board meetings or anything outside of their classroom duties to mark “McGuinty Mondays”. Students, meanwhile, are mobilizing on social media to protest the loss of their extracurriculars. Students at Stephen Lewis Secondary in Vaughan, Maple High School and Bramalae Secondary spent afternoons chanting outside their schools last week. Richmond Green Secondary School students in Richmond Hill protested yesterday.
“We want the unions and the government to talk. We do not want to be caught in between this political battle,” a Richmond Green Facebook page said. “I don’t want them to be caught in the middle either,” Education Minister Laurel Broten said in an interview Tuesday, “which is why on many occasions I said to the teachers to come directly to me and leave them out of it.” She encouraged students to ask questions and inform themselves on the issues. “There’s a lot of misinformation out there ... and if I can do anything to help I’d be pleased to do that.” At the same time, she suggests school boards post information on the status of extracurricular activities at their schools, to help clear up any confusion parents are feeling. Ms Broten said she is proud of students who are taking a stand. “It’s critically important that they inform themselves of the issues and raise their voice.” “It’s also important, for those just paying attention now, to realize we did make every effort to reach agreement,” she said, pointing to the francophone and Catholic teachers who were able to reach a deal. Teachers need to take a pause on salary increases and end the practice of banking sick days to allow other programs like full-day kindergarten, she said. “We can’t have these expenditures grow year after year.” The legislation passed by the Liberals earlier this month, with help from the Progressive Conservatives, imposes a wage freeze, cuts sick days in half, prevents the banking of sick days and blocks teachers from striking.

A proposed ban on food waste grinders has been postponed after York Region’s environmental services committee met with strong opposition from industry representatives Wednesday. Plumbers, manufacturers and developers said they were surprised and alarmed to learn York council approved a ban on the installation of new and replacement food waste grinders that was to take effect in November. Council approved a one-year, phased-in implementation plan last November, but many industry insiders claimed they were left in the dark until recently. “We are York-based and we were not consulted,” said David Coffey, general manager of InSinkErator, which is manufactured by the Markham-based Emerson Canada. The company found out from customers about the ban, Mr. Coffey said, adding it was approved based on a misunderstanding of the product. “We are asking for consumer choice,” he said.
The region’s regulatory compliance and policy manager for environmental issues said regional staff’s No. 1 concern about food waste grinders is the potential impact to the sewage collection system. York spends $1 million annually to address fats, oil and grease issues there, Michele Samuels said. Food waste comprises 70 per cent water, Mr. Coffey said, adding his company’s product grinds food waste to particles. “It’s no different than human waste,” he explained. “If the sewage (system) can handle human waste, it can handle food waste, too.” Ms Samuels pointed out the regionwide 84-per-cent participation rate in the green bin program is “the envy of many municipalities”. According to a report, staff have not identified significant benefits to the region or sewage operations at the Duffin Creek plant from permitting food waste grinders. However, high concentrations of organic waste and solids in the sewage collection system can contribute to blocked pipelines, corrosion, odour issues and increased capital and operational costs, Ms Samuels said. A food waste grinder ban is a best prac-
tice to protect York’s sewage infrastructure, she added. Such bans are already in place in Markham, Vaughan and East Gwillimbury, with other York municipalities to follow suit. A similar ban in Durham is expected later this year, Ms Samuels said. The grinders are a convenient and sanitary solution to food waste management, Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers technical services director Bruce Rebel argued. “It’s a viable alternative,” Mr. Rebel said. “It’s a tool you need to keep in your arsenal.” Modern dishwashers include the same technology used in these grinders, so people don’t have to pre-rinse dishes, he said. The Chinese Canadian Table Tennis Association has played host to numerous invitational international all-star tournaments in the past. But when the Markham non-profit sport association welcomes the Scotiabank World Junior Circuit Canadian Open to its recently expanded 24,000-squre foot facility Oct. 2 to 6, it promises to be a truly international event. Especially when some of the top under-18 and under-15 year-old players from more than 14 countries are slated to showcase their skills with the paddle. Not to mention it also represents the first time this yearly competition will take place in Canada, said Jeff Lau, association vicepresident. “We’re definitely excited to have this event,” he said. “There will be over 100 players from 14 different countries coming to Markham. Players from South Korea, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, the Czech Republic, Trinidad, Canada and the United States. “It’s a true international event because it’s the World Junior Circuit.” In describing the five-day competition, Lau said it will be divided into two categories with one for juniors 18 years of age and under. The other will be for cadet — those 15 and younger. Within the two age group categories, there will be competitions for boys and girls in team, doubles and singles’ format. The Markham organization earned the right to host the event following discussions

with Table Tennis Canada and the International Table Tennis Federation that began earlier this year, Lau said, adding several factors worked in the association’s favour, including its track record in hosting international matches. The association’s facility, which Lau described as being the largest private table tennis club in North America, has the capacity to set up more than 45 tournament-sized tables However, more space is required for tables used in international events, Lau said. As a result, there will be far fewer tables when the World Junior Circuit’s Canadian Open takes place. Another factor which worked in the association’s favour is its ability to include spectator seating. “When we had an all-star tournament last year, we had a number of world ranked top players come and the response was overwhelming, where we had spectator seating for over 600 people. It was packed,” recalled Lau. With the top junior calibre players coming to the association’s facility and since expanding its facility, Lau said they now have the ability to add more seats. “For this event, we can accommodate over 900 spectators since we expanded our facility to 24,000 square feet.” The Chinese Canadian Table Tennis Association is at 1181 Denison St. For more information on the tournament and association, log on to cctta.net

Seven teams will break the huddle when the York Region Athletic Association’s senior/varsity football program begins next weekend. Seven survivors. Lucky seven. Point of view counts. It is not unusual for the number of participating teams to rise and fall like a cork on the sea from one season to the next. At the junior level, eight teams will suit up for the opening kickoffs. Meanwhile, the senior season is set to kickoff with a Kickoff Classic senior tripleheader on Saturday at Saint Brother Andre Catholic High School in Markham.

Outlook: “It should be a good season,� an optimistic Velinore said. “We have members of last year’s junior team moving up to senior, as well as some experienced players from last year’s senior team. As always we look forward to the challenge that is playing in the YRAA, and always look forward to gauging our development as a football program.� Burning question: “When or if we’ll get a chance to play at home this season. As some heavy rain damaged our home field, we will be playing some games at the new field built behind Mount Joy. The excitement
generated by our student population and from the players themselves always helps to bring that extra edge, so we hopefully get a chance to play in front of our home crowd,� Velinore said.

ST. JOHN, Ruth Isabelle (nee Abernethy) Passed away peacefully at St Joseph's Villa in Dundas on September 16, 2012 at age 85. Loving wife of 58 years to the late Harold St. John who passed away December 2006. Born in Bowmanville, Ontario to James Hogg Abernethy and Emma Pearl (Metcalf) Abernethy. Ruth attended Teachers College (Normal School) in Peterborough where she met Harold and married in 1948. She taught at Ritson Road School for seven years before staying home to raise her three children. Left to celebrate her life, with love and great admiration are her children, Lloyd St. John (Markham), Lorraine (St. John) and Stephen Krawetz (Michigan), Lynne St. John-Peirce and Brian Peirce (Dundas) and her four granddaughters Rhochelle and Alexandra Krawetz and Meghan and Mackenzie Peirce who treasure memories of their Grandma and her quiet wisdom, love of music and laughter. Ruth will be missed by her brother Rae and sister-in-law Muriel Abernethy (Bowmanville), brother/ sister-in-law Max and Reta St. John (Etobicoke), sister-in-law Helen St. John (Sunderland), and her many nieces, nephews and life-long friends. She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law Harold and Joy Abernethy and brother-in-law Royce St. John. We have been blessed to have Ruth in our lives. She was known for her radiant smile, quick wit, positive attitude, courage and grace. Visitation will take place Monday September 24, 2012 from 10-11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. at DIXONGARLAND FUNERAL HOME, 166 Main St. North, Markham. Following the service, Ruth will be laid to rest at the St. John Cemetery, Lakeridge Rd, Durham 23, Sunderland. LAW, Stephen
Peacefully passed away on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Markham Stouffville Hospital surrounded by family and friends at the age of 57 after a valiant battle with Melanoma. Beloved husband of Antonia ('Toni') Law (nee Vieira), proud father of Stephanie, loving son of Shirley, preceded by his father Ralph ('Bud'), and cherished brother of Bruce and his wife Susan, he will forever be remembered in their hearts. This great loss will be felt by his mother-inlaw Lilia Vieira, and deeply missed by in-laws Pat and her husband John, Bern, and Leo, nephews and nieces Francesco, Nicholas, Christina, Gianluca, Olivia, Rachel, and Marcus. He will be held dear in the hearts of his extended families and friends. We would like to make mention of Steve's many friends from Hewlett Packard/Compaq/Tandem where he worked for over 30 years. He was a passionate craftsman, avid angler and the "go to MacGyver" for any renovation or restoration project. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Mateya Trinkaus and the staff at Markham Stouffville Hospital.
