Man shares grief after crash kills wife, daughter

$50M bridge over Hwy. 404 to ease traffic

To relieve congestion along Hwy. 7, the Region of York is building a bridge over Hwy. 404, linking business areas in Markham and Richmond Hill.

Construction of the four-lane, $50 million bridge over Hwy. 404 north of Hwy. 7 started this spring and is expected to be complete in 2018.

Drivers can expect nighttime closures as work on the bridge structure starts.

Earlier this week, construction crews started erecting support beams, closing the highway overnight.

“With any major construction project, there will be some disruption,” the region’s manger of engineering Paul Acquaah said.

But the end result will be to alleviate congestion within one of the region’s more densely populated employment areas.

“The new road will serve as a relief valve for congestion on Hwy. 7,” Acquaah said. “The 400-series highway is a barrier. There aren’t many options for drivers.”

The overpass, Norman Bethune Avenue, will connect East Pearce Street in the East Beaver Creek business area in Richmond Hill with the business park on Centurian Drive in Markham.

When it comes to the importance to the overall road network, Acquaah relates roads to pipes.

“When you pour water into the pipes, water can only go a certain way,” he said. “You pour more and more water; more and more pressure builds up. To relieve the pressure, you put in more pipes.”

Not only is this a relief for drivers but also for pedestrians and cyclists who “have no choice but to use main arteries, which are already quite congested,” Acquaah said.

When complete, Norman Bethune Avenue will feature an on-road bike lane, sidewalks and street lights.

The region is also building a two-way, north-south connection from Hwy. 7 to Norman Bethune Avenue, which will be named later this year.

This gives north-bound Hwy. 404 drivers the option to turn either east or west on to Hwy. 7 or to continue north and bypass Hwy. 7 altogether.

York Region’s police officers have ratified their contract with 85 per cent of officers accepting the deal that came just weeks before conciliation was set to begin.

Ballots were counted on Friday at about 1 p.m. with non-uniformed personnel ratifying the deal at the higher rate of 91 per cent.

Although the details of the contract were not been released to the public, we do know it comes more than half a year after the last collective agreement expired.

This is not the only positive sign of peace among the police union and York Regional Police Services Board, chaired

by Frank Scarpitti.

Phil ShrewsburyGee, the association secretary, said although the job action union members began at the end of June will continue, it has been scaled back.

“The association and senior executive of YRP have been conducting ongoing meetings to address members ongoing concerns,” he said in an interview.

“There’s been a committee of members struck to deal with issues …. We’re pleased to advise that communications with the executive have been very productive and a number of concerns raised by our members have been addressed. We’re hopeful any outstanding issues will be resolved amicably in the near future.”

However, he added members continue to wear badges and T-shirts in “support of members and the community.”

The news comes weeks after yorkregion.com obtained statistics showing tickets dolled out by cops dropped 66 per cent from last year in the three weeks after the work action began. Conversely, warnings to drivers rose steeply.

“We appreciate the collaborative approach that led to a successful agreement,” Scarpitti said in a media release.

Does charging people to recycle get desired results?

D

o people in Ontario respect the environment the way they used to? Odd question, maybe.

You’d think it would be the opposite — people today would be all about saving the planet. Yet, the way I remember it, growing up in Ontario, people did not throw their trash in ravines, on trails, or in the woods.

It was the era of “give a hoot, don’t pollute”. If so much as a gum wrapper accidentally went out our car window, we would look back hoping the OPP was not following us, guns drawn.

So I’m always mystified when I see trash where it doesn’t belong.

Do we not have trucks that come by our homes to pick up our trash and recyclables?

If something seems like trash or a recyclable and you have it in your hand, can you not find a trash or recycling bin, or put it in your pocket and bring it home to deal with there?

There is a walking trail near my house. The other day I wondered, can I take 10 steps without seeing a tiny bit of trash in the grass beside the trail? A little piece of paper or plastic? A bottle or wrapper?

No, I could not.

Meanwhile concern grows in York that large items get dumped, here, there and everywhere: drywall, mattresses, couches.

Are there reasons for this, when there are clearly systems in place?

These are just my personal observations, but perhaps there are.

I have tried to be a good citizen and take those oddball recyclables to the regional depots in York. They don’t make it easy for you.

I brought old computer and TV parts, empty camping-style propane tanks and styrofoam packaging to one depot, only to be told they will take one or another of the above, but not the other two.

For the other items I needed to drive to other depots.

You want to say: “But I am here now! Can’t you just put a dumpster here and fill it up with styrofoam or propane tanks or paint cans or you name it and drive it to the

The same goes for limits on bags of trash I can put out.

Whether I put it all out today, or put it out in bits and pieces every two weeks over the next two months, it is still trash and will end up in the same place. Can I not just put it out and get it over with?

Not saying I would do this, but perhaps a person would get frustrated and take their trash to some sideroad and chuck it rather than leave it piled in the garage.

And why are you charging me?

I took leftover wood from a project, styrofoam packaging, old National Geographics my dad gave me, a broken kitchen chair (the dog chewed through the leg), and broken hockey sticks, to the depot in Richmond Hill.

And waited in line.

They stopped me at the booth.

“That will be $10.”

I thought you wanted me to dispose of this properly? I’m bringing it to you, rather than you having to come to my place to pick it up (and where I’m limited to how much I can put out at one time). I already pay taxes. I am trying to do the right thing. And it’s $10?

Again, perhaps this is why, people who really should know better or care more, find a place to dump this kind of stuff, to be discovered by future generations out walking on a trail that ought to be pristine.

It’s like the $5 recycling fee on old tires. Good idea? They drained a pond in my area to do work and found a dozen old tires at the bottom. Makes you wonder.

Mental health of students important If you are a parent to a child graduating high school and entering university, my word of wisdom is that you standby and support them with this enormous transition.

Despite the excitement, the first year of university life is huge stepping stone – completely different from high school, so it is important that you stand by them as a friend and provide them whatever help they need.

The sudden transition can certainly be a cultural shock to many students, with some starting their classes as early as 8 a.m. and ending no earlier than 9 p.m.

On other days, they may have no classes at all.

I have found the first year places a great deal of mental

stress on students, as parents demand nothing but their academic performance, and forget to take stock of their well-being.

This is the wrong way to approach the situation.

Their mental health needs to be nurtured, otherwise we risk our children falling into depression and forgetting about the studies entirely.

To students who have felt that their marks are not what they expected… guess what… in five years, these marks do not matter. What matters is how street-smart you become.

If you are street smart you will most successful!

So, worry less, work hard, and enjoy life.

Enjoy studying, cherish your friendships, and help each other.

Markham father who lost wife, daughter struggles with sudden death by jeremy grimaldi

A serene looking white Buddha sits atop Pradeep Guruge’s mantelpiece, flanked by blue flowers, incense and candles in front.

Only one day ago his livingroom was filled with the joy and laughter of his two daughters and wife. In its place now remains despair, half of that family wiped out during a horrific crash that has left so many asking why.

“The hardest part is that it’s so sudden, you never imagine it happening,” he said.

“It’s just all so sudden.”

Pradeep was alerted to the news at 11:50 Monday morning, hours after arriving to work at a bank in Toronto.

On their way back from dropping him off at the Markham GO Station, near their home, his wife Inoka Athuraliya-Liyana-Waduge, 42, and his daughter Savani, 4, were struck while driving their Toyota and killed mere blocks from their home.

Police say their black Corolla was travelling eastbound when a black Infinity G35, driven by a still unnamed 28-year-old and his five-and-a-half-month-old child, crossed the centre line near 16th Avenue and Bur Oak Drive before colliding head-on.

There are no skid marks on the road to signify braking. However, near the crash site, strewn with car parts and shards of plastic, rests a makeshift memorial, containing a small number of flowers and a stuffed Min-

“I am trying to spend as much time as possible with her, because she was very close to her mother,” he said, before referencing his philosophy on the crash. “As a Buddhist we believe that when you die you are born in another life, but you have no control. That’s why you have to live a good life, always wish well for others, clear your thoughts of anger or revenge or hatred, then and only then you will be assured of a good life after your death.”

One York police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity said he does expect there to be criminal charges in the case, although he’s unsure what form they could take considering investigators are just beginning their inquiries.

Pradeep added that although he is unsure of the exact details, he expects the funeral to take place this weekend after an autopsy is complete.

MP faces ethics investigation over travel who canvassed for Philpott in the 2014 federal election.

But the office has announced that Philpott will reimburse taxpayers a total of $3,703.57 from her March and July travel.

It’s the most famous limousine ride that Stouffville’s ever heard of.

Markham-Stouffville MP and Health Minister Jane Philpott was the highlight of national media after it was revealed her office had spent $1,708.84 of taxpayer money on luxury car services in March while travelling around southern Ontario.

A spokesperson in her office said Tuesday the MP has “no new comment.”

Philpott’s office has released more information about the minister’s travel expenditures, which included an additional $1,994.73 she spent in July to travel to the Assembly of First Nations meeting.

Philpott’s press secretary, Andrew MacKendrick, said she did not use a limousine. She rode in a car from Executive Sedan Livery Service Inc. which is owned by a Liberal supporter

“I would like to apologize for the excessive costs related to travel for my work responsibilities,” Philpott said in a statement. “This does not live up to the standard that Canadians expect and I have taken steps to ensure this does not occur again. I will personally reimburse in full the expenses incurred on March 31 and July 12 for travel to meetings that took place in the Greater Toronto

and Hamilton Area, and in Niagara Falls.”

“I have also asked my department to review travel booked to and from the airport with this service to ensure that taxpayers are charged for only fairmarket value, and I will reimburse any excessive expenses based on departmental advice,” she added.

Last week, after Conservative health critic Colin Carrie wrote to Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson regarding Philpott’s expenses, the minister will be examined to determine whether or not she violated the Conflict of Interest Act in her use of the car service, as the service is owned by a Liberal supporter.

Philpott’s office confirmed and agreed to the investigation.

“I can confirm the letter was received,” said MacKendrick. “Our office and the Minister will work in full co-operation with Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner.”

5 tips to prevent backpack injuries in kids Whether your kids are into school, sports or music, they all need a good backpack to lug their goods to and from school and extracurricular activities.

As parents prepare for the annual back-to-school season, Ontario’s chiropractors are sharing some simple tips to help kids avoid injuries commonly associated with backpacks. Here’s how to carry the load comfortably and safely: 1. Choose the right backpack. Forget good looking leather — it’s far too heavy. Opt for vinyl or canvas instead. Pick a pack that has two wide, adjustable, padded shoulder straps, a hip or waist strap, a padded back and plenty of pockets. Make sure the pack fits properly, is not too snug around the arms and under the armpits, and that its size is proportionate to the wearer’s body.

2. Pack it properly. Your kids are not moving out, so make sure to pack only what is needed for that day and distribute the weight evenly. It’s a good idea to know roughly what each item weighs.

The total weight of a filled pack should be no

more than 10 to 15 per cent of the wearer’s own body weight.

3. Put the backpack on properly. It’s a good idea to help young children with this, at least the first few times. Put the pack on a flat surface, at waist height. Slip on the pack, one shoulder at a time, and then adjust the straps to fit comfortably.

When lifting a backpack or any heavy item, remember to lift with the arms and legs and bend at the knees.

4. Teach your child the right way to wear it. Both shoulder straps should be used and adjusted so that the pack fits snugly to the body, without dangling to the side. Backpacks should never be worn over just one shoulder. You should be able to slide your hand between the backpack and your child’s back. The waist strap should also be worn for added stability.

A driver allegedly found slumped, unconscious over the steering wheel of a van in Vaughan last Friday night is one of 16 motorists charged with impaired drivingrelated offences by York Regional Police last weekend.

Police received a call about a Dodge Caravan swerving and nearly hitting other vehicles in the area of Islington Avenue and Hwy. 7 at about 9:40 p.m. Aug. 26, Const.

Andy Pattenden said.

Officers found the van parked in the

southbound lanes of Islington Avenue with the driver passed out and slouched over the steering wheel, he said. It took several attempts to wake the driver. A 25-year-old Toronto man has been charged.

In total, 14 men and two women were charged with alcohol-related driving offences from Friday to Sunday.

Nine drivers registered readings of more than twice the legal limit, four were more than 200 mgs and two were more than 300 mgs per 100 millilitres of blood.

NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT OF TRANSIT PROJECT ASSESSMENT PROCESS 407 Transitway Kennedy Road to Brock Road Regional Municipalities of York and Durham Ontario Ministry of Transportation THE PROJECT The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is proposing a 18 km segment of a transitway facility along the Highway 407 corridor through York Region and Durham Region, from east of Kennedy Road in the City of Markham to east of Brock Road in the City of Pickering (407 Transitway). The 407 Transitway includes Markham Road Station, Ninth Line Station, Donald Cousens Parkway Station, Whites Road Station and Brock Road Station; and three protected sites near McCowan Road, York-Durham Line and Rossland Road. Subject to the outcome of the study, the 407 Transitway will be implemented initially as bus rapid transit (BRT) with the opportunity to convert to light rail transit (LRT) in the future.

This 18 km segment forms part of a planned 150 km long high-speed interregional facility on a separate right-of-way that parallels Highway 407 from Burlington to Highway 35/115, with stations, parking and access connections. This transitway is a component of the official plans of the stakeholder municipalities and of the Province’s commitment to support transit initiatives in the Greater Golden Horseshoe through the Metrolinx Regional Transportation Plan.

THE PROCESS The environmental impact of this transit project will be assessed according to the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings. This Notice of Commencement marks the beginning of the formal 120-day consultation period, starting September 1, 2016, and ending when the Notice of Completion is issued. As part of the transit project assessment process, an Environmental Project Report is being prepared. All information produced as part of this project is available at www.407transitway.com.

CONSULTATION To date, the project team has been actively engaging with various agencies and members of the public. When many think of Canadian attributes, kindness is often top of the list.

But Markham resident Paul Schafer wants to add creativity to the list.

His newly released book, Celebrating Canadian Creativity, points to a long list of creative Canadians, influencing every sector of life.

“Innovation and creativity are part of our identity,” said the director of The World Culture Project, a project started in the late 1980s dedicated culture research and how it impacts human welfare and wellbeing.

“Canadians have the image of being dull.

But our history shows us being creative is a way of life, rather than an art.”

Schafer has been looking at Canadian culture for more than four decades.

His book showcases how being creative is part of Canada’s deep history, going back to pre-settler days, when Aboriginal peoples were creative when it came to food, clothing and shelter.

“There is a rich base of creativity right from the beginning,” Schafer said. “And creativity is so connected to survival. People came here

and had to tackle this huge land mass and hostile environment. Creativity stems from problem solving.”

The book also looks at other areas of Canadian creativity, including education, environment and sports.

Canadian creativity is not associated with one decade or time period, but is a thread over the course of history, Schafer said.

And many of Canada’s inventions and ideas that have helped raise the standard of living around the world come from all across the country, he added.

While Canada is a hot bed for ideas, lack of funding still remains a problem, Schafer said.

“It’s the same Canadian problem,” he said.

“The problem isn’t creativity. We are very inventive. But we are not very successful in accumulating funds.”

One solution might be to inject more entrepreneurial skills, such as marketing and where and how to find capital funding into the education system, he added.

The final chapter of his book calls for the development of a national strategy to capitalize on the next wave of Canadian creativity.

D. Paul Schafer is a Markham author who has just written a book that celebrates our creativity, pointing out that although we have a reputation of being “dull,” Canadian inventions are actually in use around the world.

This past July, nine Scouts Canada members from the 7th Markham Scout Group journeyed to Finland to take part in the seventh annual Roihu Finnjamboree that took place July 20 to 28.

Jamborees are massive camps that are legendary in the Scouting world. Approximately 17,000 Scouts from around the world took part in this trip of a lifetime, including 167 members of Scouts Canada.

We extended our trip, travelling from July 13 to 31, with a two-day stop in Iceland before arriving in Helsinki for a pre-camp called Home Hospitality prior to the Jamboree. We also had a post-camp tour of Finland.

For some youth, this was their first time outside of Canada and the U.S. During Home Hospitality, we were divided between local Finnish families, who we stayed with for four days. Our host families showed us around Helsinki and introduced us to different aspects of Finnish culture, including Karelian pastries, blueberry picking and, of course, saunas, which are very popular in Finland. For our group, the saunas were a big hit!

“Meeting other international teenagers and learning about their experiences and culture was absolutely amazing,” said Jack O’Neil, a 17-year-old Venturer Scout who also attended the World Jamboree in Japan last year.

The activities at Roihu Finnjamboree included water sports, crafts, hiking, a graffiti wall, a three-storey tree house and a dance club in the forest.

Even though it was camping, it wouldn’t be a Finnish camp if it didn’t have three saunas on-site. So naturally our Scout group could be found in the sauna every night before heading to bed.

4 things every new home buyer needs to know

New homeownership is a significant milestone in your life — it’s an investment in your future and the place where you’ll spend a significant amount of time. But a purchase this large requires due diligence. Here are some tips that every new home buyer should know as a start: 1. Read your agreement over carefully. You’ve chosen the home that’s right for you.

Hopefully you’ve also researched your builder on the Ontario Builder Directory to make sure they’re licensed to build and sell homes in the province. The next step is signing the Agreement of Purchase and Sale. Pay attention to what you’re signing and be sure to read all of the dates outlined to get a sense of how long it may take for your new home to be ready for occupancy.

It’s always best to go over this

contract with an experienced real estate lawyer. Make sure that anything you discussed with your builder is included in this document. A verbal agreement is never considered a binding contract in real estate.

2. Limit your down payment.

Under Ontario’s new home warranty, buyers are protected up to $40,000 for deposits on freehold homes and $20,000 for condominiums (in addition to the protections in the Condominium Act). Take caution before making a deposit that exceeds these limits — in the rare occurrence that you do not receive your new home, you’re only covered up to these amounts.

3. Get ready to move in — but be prepared for some unfinished business. Sometimes, new homes are ready for occupancy but don’t feel complete

to the new home owner. This is even more evident when buying a new condo. Many buyers find out the hard way that they’re required to take possession of their completed unit before common element features are finished, such as the front reception, landscaping, and swimming pool. This means you could be living for many months in a construction zone, without the anticipated amenities.

4. Understand your warranty protection. Almost every new home built in Ontario comes with warranty coverage that is provided by the builder and backed by Tarion. In addition to deposit coverage and delayed closing compensation, there are also three separate warranties on new homes. Together they last up to seven years and include violations to the Ontario building code, coverage for major structural defects, and defects in workmanship and electrical, plumbing, and heating systems. Your builder should provide you with a homeowner information package before you take possession with detailed information about the warranty.

Thornhill tennis star Milos Raonic has opened up with some very personal — and at times startling — revelations in a 2,000-word first-person essay he published on the Players Tribune website Monday.

The piece leads off with a quote from the 26-year-old’s high-profile legendary coach, John McEnroe, who yelled, “Show me you have balls!” at the top-10-ranked player during a rain delay in a pressure-filled Wimbledon fourth round this past June.

After that telling off, Raonic came back from being down 2-1 in sets to beat David Goffin in five sets. He moved on to the quarterfinals where he beat American Sam Querrey in four sets and then edged living legend Roger Federer in the semis.

Though he wouldn’t win Wimbledon, losing in the final to Great Britain’s Andy Murray, making it that far was a career first for the Canadian and he discovered, for the first time he says, that he hates to lose more than he loves to win.

Raonic also talks about his upbringing and the efforts his parents made to get him where he is today.

City, Raonic, where he won his opening match Monday, is eager to make his mark.

“This year’s U.S. Open is one of the most important tournaments of my career. I have to bring mental intensity from the first day of the draw… I’ve learned a lot about myself over the past 18 months. I’m on this constant journey, I think, of improvement, in many different aspects of my life. For instance, I’ve learned to love art galleries — John (McEnroe) is a big art collector, so we like to talk about it on the road.

I still think about a Yayoi Kusama retrospective I saw at the Victoria Miro Gallery in London with my girlfriend, Danielle. I love that visiting these galleries doesn’t exhaust me physically; it stimulates me,” he wrote.

And he reveals he has a brand new goal that motivates him.

“I remember, when I played in my first Grand Slam tournament in 2010, when I was asked what I would like to achieve, I said I would like to be a solid top-50 player and hopefully get into the top 10 once. Now, my expectations have shifted drastically. I want to be No. 1 in the world. As I arrive in New York, there’s one thing that keeps me going: I hate losing. I can never really find a way to accept it.

I can be sportsmanlike about it but I can’t find a way to accept it.”

Last season, Markham Royals general manager and head coach Mike Galati felt his defence was a little small in stature and physicality and paid the price during the postseason when they were outmuscled by bigger rival forwards.

But once the puck is dropped to start the 2016-17 Ontario Junior Hockey League season, Galati insisted that won’t be the case this time around.

In his attempt to address those needs, Galati acquired a pair of defencemen in Austin Jeffers and Jacob Cuffley from the Brockville Braves of the Canadian Central

Hockey League Tuesday.

In exchange for the two 17-yearold blueliners, the Royals sent cash to Brockville.

Standing six-foot, three-inches, Cuffley began last season with the Kanata Stallions and had one goal and one assist in 18 games before being called up to Brockville for the playoffs where he saw time in six games and had no points.

“He’s a big defenceman who can skate and was a draft pick of Sudbury a couple of years ago (eighth round in 2014) who wants to go to school,” cited Galati of Cuffley.

Jeffers, who stands at six-foot, one-inches, played last season with Clarington Toros midgets and was

to play this season with Brockville.

“He’s a good puck handling defenceman who also skates well,” he said in describing Jeffers.

“We will have both of them (Cuffley and Jeffers) for a few years.”

The addition of Cuffley and Jeffers came on the heels of the Royals acquiring two other players from the CCHL during the offseason in six-foot, two-inch defenceman Liam Watson from Kemptville 73s and forward Jonathan Tecce from the Hawkesbury Hawks.

In acquiring four players from the CCHL, Galati said it was just a case of establishing contacts with coaches from that league and in knowing which players were avail-

able. With 30 players still on their roster, the Royals intend to get down to 25, after road preseason games against the Toronto Junior Canadiens Tuesday and Mississauga Chargers Wednesday.

In keeping extra players around for these two games, Galati said it was to fill the void left by some veterans who were drafted by Ontario Hockey League clubs and will be attending their training camps this weekend.

Citing four or five players from his club will be going, Galati anticipates all will be returning to Markham after the Labour Day weekend.

“But you never know,” he said.

The Markham District Baseball Association will serve as hosts for the Ontario Baseball Association minor peewee A and AA championships with games played at various sites this weekend.

In the minor peewee A division, the Markham Mariners are scheduled to begin play against Niagara Falls at Centennial Park North Friday at 3:30 p.m.

The Mariners minor peewee AA’s are slated to open play against the Intercounty Baseball Association’s second seed at Milliken Mills Park Diamond 5 Friday at 6:30 p.m.

The championships are scheduled to continue Saturday and wind down Sunday at Milliken Mills Park diamonds 4 and 5 at 1 or 4 p.m.
