Jr. A hockey makes royal return BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA
mhayakawa@yrmg.com
Mike Galati isn’t about to proclaim that the Markham Royals will skate off with the 2015-16 Ontario Junior Hockey League title. But the head coach has seen signs that his
team could be a contender as Jr. A hockey returns to Markham after a hiatus that has lasted several seasons. Pulling up stakes from Hamilton where they competed as the Red Wings and relocating in Markham this past offseason, the Royals
will unveil their squad when they play the Stouffville Spirit in their season-opening match at Markham Centennial Arena Friday starting at 7 p.m. See JR., page 19.

Daycare supporters take case to city hall By Laura Finney
Lfinney@yrmg.com
The future of Town’s Little Daycare is still unknown. The daycare, which has run out of the Markham Civic Centre for the past 25 years, will be shutting down in October if they can’t find another location. Their lease is up next month, and will not be renewed because the city needs the space. Supporters of TLC voiced their concerns to council members during Wednesday’s general committee meeting. “Closure of the facility would mean a loss of 57 daycare spaces and will be devastating for families and staff,” said Elise Ho-Foong a past parent and current daycare board member, during a deputation. She was one of about 50 parents, past parents, board members, staff and volunteers who attended the meeting in matching blue shirts that said “Please Save Town’s Little Children Daycare.” “We are a board of volunteer parents, asking the city to help us
find the best possible solution for this valuable piece of social infrastructure,” said Ho-Foong. She asked for a lease extension for another year. City staff have said that they would consider a lease extension, but only if the daycare can find another location. Ho-Foong said the daycare staff and board have been working hard with no luck. She presented council members with a list of a dozen options that did not work due to factors like cost, proximity to other daycares, health and safety issues, zoning, lack of outdoor space, or other ministry requirements. The daycare has an upcoming meeting with the York Region Catholic School board to discuss if they have suitable space, but Ho-Foong said these discussions take time. “We need a lease extension to assess the financial feasibility, timing implications and to apply for all the applicable licenses and permits. In every meeting TLC had with the City throughout 2015, we emphasized that TLC requires time to secure an alternate location,”

THE COMPETITION JUST CAN’T FIGURE OUT HOW WE DO IT. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF NO-CHARGE OFFERS
she said. “It is the most important variable that we need right now.” She also questioned why the lease extension is only possible if they have a new location. “There must be a timeline for the city’s plans for the daycare space and it seems that the timeline is flexible to an extent,” she said. Her other request was to put the Warden House, and other municipally owned property on the table. A few years ago TLC daycare staff knew their lease was expiring, but believed they could stay at the civic centre and pay fair market rates, she said. City staff members have said that they never confirmed this and in January of this year TLC was told their lease would not be extended. The daycare began working with the city to find a new location. One option was the Warden House. But according to Ho-Foong and other daycare staff, that was taken off the table in April, along with other municipally owned property. “We would like to do our best to try and meet the city’s objectives. However, it is also an issue of social
responsibility,” she said and added other municipalities have made serious commitments to childcare services. “If the City of Markham chooses not to renew TLC’s lease, it will force the closure of this gold standard facility. It is only one of five daycares in York Region that has received the Raising the Bar – Quality Assurance status.” Other parents agreed. “I am very sad to hear that TLC has to close just because they couldn’t get a temporary lease extension from the city,” said deputant James Huo, whose daughter used to go to TLC. “TLC is the best daycare centre I have ever used.” He said throughout the process and negotiations parents and staff have complained that they were unable to speak with council members and instead they went through a city representative, Dennis Flaherty, director of corporate communications and community engagement at the city. “For things like this, if we can’t reach the councillors and our elected representatives to discuss, I wonder what options as constituents

would have to have in the future if there are any other things we need help from them,” he said. “What’s the point of casting votes?” While daycare representatives were hoping for a decision from councillors at the meeting, they were told that committee members could only receive their deputations. TLC was not on the agenda for the meeting, although they were allowed to make two deputations. For the issue to be voted on, it would have to come to council, which meets later this month. “There is a lot of work that has been going on with the city and TLC, and I’d like to see that continue,” said Regional Councillor Nirmala Armstrong. “We do have someone that you have been communicating with, I’m hoping you can continue to communicate with that individual.” Councillor Valerie Burke said she would like to have discussions with them, if the meeting with the school board does not work out and that she hoped for a favourable solution.

More than 5,000 education workers in York Region were expected to join a provincewide work-to-rule campaign beginning today (Thursday), barring some type of deal having been reached overnight. “It’s going to be difficult. We don’t want to go out on a full-blown strike. We always have the students’ concerns (in mind),” Elena Di Nardo, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 2331 in York Region, said. The union represents 55,000 educational assistants, custodians, secretaries, library technicians, early childhood educators, student support workers and others across the province. They are in a legal strike position as of today. Di Nardo is more optimistic than she was late last month that a settlement can be reached after the provincial government agreed to additional bargaining dates this week. But she isn’t ruling out escalating job action. “We’re hoping through these days of negotiations that we have centrally, we can come to an agreement without having to go, actually, on a full-blown strike,” she said. “We could have escalating job action. We could step up work-to-rule. We could possibly go into a rotating strike or a full-blown strike. But we’re giving the opportunity to the ministry to come to an agreement with what we have on the table.” As the work-to-rule campaign kicks off, students and parents should not feel any impact, Di Nardo said. “We have to keep in mind students come first and the safety of students always comes first,” she said. “It’s really not going to affect the students as much or the parents when we’re doing a work-to-rule, but it could be a completely different scenario if we go on a rotating strike or a full-blown strike, which is not where we want to go. We want to be able to get an agreement… Our goal is not to go on a full-blown strike. Our goal is to be there for the students and to come up with a fair, tentative agreement that will work best for everyone overall.” During the first phase of the work-to-rule, education workers will refuse to work overtime, not come to school early or work late, decline participation in any voluntary activities, not take calls or emails from supervisors if they are home sick, refuse to perform duties of fellow union colleagues and “work at a safe pace,” Di Nardo said. Although she would not comment on the union’s demands, she said education workers want to be treated as fairly as teachers. “The school does not run alone by teachers. We all play a very important part and we always seem to be put on the back burner, education support workers,” she said. Public high school teachers and Catholic secondary and elementary teachers reached agreements with the province last month. However, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario is still negotiating with the province, York Region union president David Clegg said. The union announced last month it was escalating its work-to-rule campaign. Teachers will participate in extracurricular activities, but won’t take part in field trips and “meet the teacher” nights, collect money for school-related activities, participate in fundraising activities, email principals and vice-principals outside work hours unless there is a safety concern and collect or distribute school or board paperwork to students.

Probably the first reason for Blue is the back-to-school part for my kids – summer just isn’t long enough! Second reason would be the Blueberry Season; still in swing both here, up North and in the maritimes, from whence I just came, but the main reason for Blue is our amazing ball team that is working baseball magic! All my buddies know that I love ball, but this ad was the brain child of my wife, Cathy, who, along with her Mom, make me look just average in the fan department – So, we’re doing Blue this week, Baseball Blue!
BASEBALLSTEAKS OUR
These are a fave of mine dating a long way back, and as you may know, the moisture component of these is beer, and for this occasion, we’ll be using ‘Blue’!
Our cheese counter will be BLUE too! One of my all-time faves is Cambozola cheese, which as its name suggests, is a marriage of surface ripened cheese, - Camenbert in this case, and a blue, Gorgonzola. The sum is better than the parts, if you could imagine, because both parts are great on their own! The second is Wensleydale with Blueberries; a dessert cheese from the land of desserts. Unknown runner became courageous hero,Terry Fox
T
“Terry Fox — fighting a oneman battle against cancer — finally arrived in Richmond Hill Friday afternoon, but even the radio stations in the area were hard pressed to inform people when he would be in any one spot. Last week, newspapers along Yonge Street, from Steeles Avenue to Bradford, attempted to predict when and where the young onelegged runner would be. It was virtually an impossible task. Terry, who is attempting to run across Canada, has been in this area for about two weeks and has criss-crossed himself so much, it’s a wonder he’s not dizzy. In Richmond Hill: Hillcrest Mall, a week before the runner was scheduled to arrive, attempted to set up a reception and set the wheels in motion. Canadian Cancer Society volunteers worked inside the mall and collected some $6,000, while mall employees put together another $2,400.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
COLUMN
he legend of courageous Canadian Terry Fox has become just that — legendary. But as the 35th anniversary of his Marathon of Hope draws closer this month, and as all our communities prepare to present annual fundraising walks in his name, it’s fascinating to take a glimpse into how the media wrote about the passionate young man with one leg and a dream of running across Canada. It’s important to remember that newspapers, radio and TV stations did their best to share news of Terry’s impending arrival to their communities in the days before Twitter, Facebook and cellphones. An editorial from a July 1980 Liberal newspaper, entitled “Terry’s now clear of populated area,” is a fun look back at how local newspapers wrote about and praised this unknown young man from British Columbia, who — we now all know — became one of Canada’s most famous heroes.

Marney Beck The reception in front of Hillcrest finally happened Friday afternoon, but as late as Friday morning, one report said Terry was behind schedule and would abandon his plans to run north on Hwy. 11, selecting instead Hwy. 27. When the runner had actually arrived on Hwy. 11, we were still getting reports he wasn’t coming to Richmond Hill. Thursday night, Terry was in Aurora for a reception, Friday morning he was in the Brampton area, at noon he was at Canada’s Wonderland in Maple and in the afternoon he was in Richmond Hill. The poor kid must be going bonkers by now. He has been directed in so many circles he must be having trouble finding west. Terry Fox is doing a great service in helping to fight cancer. And every district of the Cancer Society wants to acknowledge him in that particular area. He has probably come closer than anyone to actually being in a dozen places at once. Now that he’s on his way out of the densely populated Metropolitan area, Terry hopefully can relax a bit and get back to his original challenge. Keep running, Terry.” Markham honours the memory of Terry Fox with its popular run Sept. 20 in Unionville near Toogood Pond. Every town and city is proud to fundraise and celebrate Terry’s epic feat 35 year ago. Bring along your friends and family and keep Terry’s dream of fighting cancer alive.
Mobilize on refugees We all know how horrific is the plight of the millions of refugees streaming out of Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and parts of Africa. I have sent a proposal to our mayor, Frank Scarpitti, to be proactive in this awful situation and organize the citizens of Markham to invite some of these destitute families into their homes and lives. My sense is we have many empty-nesters in our city who could possibly open their hearts to these refugees who have had to travel at great risk by foot, boat and train in order to get out of harm’s way. A thought would be for every household who agrees to take in a family, maybe four other families could assist them financially and emotionally so that a huge burden does not fall on the host family. I have suggested to our mayor that he set up a numbered charity so that all financial contributions and housing expenses would be
seen as a charitable contribution and given a tax credit. Maybe I’m simplifying this issue but hey, Markham did a wonderful job with the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games as well as Globalfest. We are certainly up to the challenge once we have a proactive team to cover all angles. Maybe because I am the daughter of refugees from Hitler that I feel so strongly that we must help. Surely I am not alone. Pope Francis is leading by example and the Bishop of Toronto has rallied people. Let Markham show this same charity. We are looking at making a difference between life and death.
Joyce Riettie Mirjah MARKHAM
Stop refugee bigotry Since coming to Canada in the late ‘80s, I’ve seen refugees come from Somalia, Sri Lanka, Bosnia, South America, Punjab, Iraq, Egypt and other nations. We did not ask them their religion nor caste; the only
thing that mattered was that they were persecuted and needed shelter. The Harper government has now brought our refugee policy back to the 1940s, where being Jewish was enough to disqualify you as a refugee, no matter how persecuted you were. Today that policy is being applied to Muslims. Chris Alexander and Harper spin this as “helping persecuted minorities”. Sure, as long as you’re Christian. If you’re a Rohingya from Myanmar, and are referred to as “the most persecuted people in the world”, or Tibetan, or a Syrian Muslim being killed by a dictator, you’re out of luck. Mr Harper wants to know which God you worship first before helping you. Last year, when the Harper government asked the UN to pick refugees by religion, they had the good sense to tell Harper to get lost. It’s time the Canadian people tell him the same thing. No more religious bigotry.

School year safety tips With school back in session, households across the country are dealing with changes in schedule and routine. Due to busy work schedules, most parents are still working when their children come home from school. This makes it especially important to have a proper security plan in place for your children. It’s important to establish and practice a set routine with your children to keep them safe during this busy time of year. These steps will then become second nature to them and will help ensure that they are maintaining proper safety habits while you’re out. Here are some tips that you can use to help keep your child safe during the back to school season. • Organize group walks where your children and their friends walk home together.
• Ensure they never go off anywhere by themselves and keep an eye out for each other. • Inform them that strangers who take an unusual interest in them should be avoided and let a trusted adult know about the incident. • Put into place a neighbourhood watch to help keep an eye out for your children and for any suspicious activity. • If your kids come home to find an open door, shattered window, or a torn screen, instruct your kids to walk away from the house to a neighbour’s and contact you immediately. • Once safely in the home, remind them to never let anyone into the house; to keep all doors locked; and set the alarm system if you have one.

the area of Clayton Drive and Kennedy Road for a collision involving three pedestrians. According to police, early stages of the investigation indicate a 36-year-old woman and her two sons, ages 6 and 3, were on the sidewalk at the corner of Harvest Moon Drive and Clayton Drive when a vehicle travelling northeast on Harvest Moon lost control and struck them. The vehicle then struck another car in the intersection before crashing into the Milliken Wesleyan Methodist Church on Clayton Drive. The pedestrians were taken to hospital. The three-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries, but was stabilized in hospital and has since been released. The woman and the six-year-old suffered nonlife-threatening injuries, police said. Chun Mok, 67, of Markham is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket Oct. 8. The investigation is ongoing. Police would like to speak to any witnesses who have not yet come forward.

York Regional Police are looking for a Blue Jays’ fan who held up a gas station just north of Markham on Monday night. Around 7:45 p.m., a gas station in the Woodbine Avenue and Stouffville Road area in the community of Gormley was robbed. York police do not identify businesses that have been robbed. There are Husky and Petro-Canada stations at the intersection. A man entered the store and made a demand for cash, indicating he had a handgun, according to police. The store employee complied and the suspect fled the store. The suspect is described as a white male between the ages of 50 and 60. He is about 5-foot-6 with a medium build. He had a white beard/goatee. He was wearing blue jeans, a black hoodie and a Blue Jays’ world championship shirt. York Regional Police are also using the hashtag #HoppingBackOnTheBandWagon to help identify the suspect: “Looking to ID old school Blue Jays
fan, wanted for robbing a gas station in Stouffville http://bit.ly/1LVpw0H #HoppingBackOnTheBandWagon”
York Regional Police are also using the hashtag #HoppingBackOnTheBandWagon to help identify the suspect: The Jays last won the World Series championship in 1993. Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police HoldUp Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6631, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. You can also leave an anonymous tip at www.1800222tips.com, or text your tip by sending TIPYORK and your message to CRIMES (274637) starting with the word YORK. – Sandra Bolan

Car runs aground at fish ‘n’ chips shop A mix-up in pedals caused a car to be driven into Captain George Fish and Chips restaurant in Stouffville Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. “A vehicle hit the gas instead of the brake and drove into the building,” according to York Regional Police Const. Laura Nicolle. People were in the restaurant, which is on west-end Main Street, just east of Ringwood Drive, but there were no injuries. The driver of the grey Toyota Corolla was a 34-year-old woman from Stouffville. No charges will be laid as the accident took place on private property, therefore, only criminal charges would apply and there was no criminal intent, according to Const. Nicolle. “It is an accident, there would be no charges that would apply,” she said. – Sandra Bolan

Josh Field was driving home from a doctor’s appointment when his phone rang. The 17-year-old glanced over at it and swerved into oncoming traffic. Before he died in the resulting crash, his mother was able to see him one last time. Kathryn Field recounted this tragic story last Friday at an OPP press conference at the Hwy. 400 OnRoute service station in King Township to warn motorists against putting their own lives and those of others at risk by driving distracted. “We are no longer the same people,” she said, explaining how distracted driving has affected her life. “We may look the same, but part of us is missing. We need to make this sort of thing socially unacceptable.” Field spoke in the lead-up to the Labour Day weekend, which historically racks up its share of road deaths, whether by inattentive or impaired driving. On Tuesday, OPP released the results of
their blitz, showing that collisions caused by distracted driving continue to rise in 2015, now up 20 per cent compared to last year. Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said people are getting the message, but choosing to ignore it. “Distracted and aggressive driving are the No. 1 and 2 killers on our roads,” he said. “Officers continue to see them both out there.” Considering the number of drunk drivers has been largely falling the past few years, distracted driving is causing new headaches for police and motorists who are witnessing the effects of the trend daily, sometimes hourly. So far this year, 41 people throughout Ontario have lost their lives and 6,600 drivers have been involved in crashes due to distracted driving. The number of deaths has remained largely constant over the past three years, with 88 deaths in 2013. However, Sgt. Schmidt said this number is only a fraction of those killed due to distracted driving, considering police need witnesses to see drivers on the phone prior to a crash for confirmation.
Elliott Silverstein of the CAA, based in Thornhill, acknowledged that everyone leads busy lives — but said that’s no excuse for the behaviour. “We all lead hectic lives, but we can’t let our busy lifestyles stand in the way of safety,” he said. Sgt. Schmidt recommended motorists make a similar contract with their children that he made with his daughter.
“When I get on the phone, my daughter calls me out and tells me, ‘That’s distracted driving, daddy’,” he said. “I always put the phone down. If it’s important enough, I pull over to where it’s safe before sending the message.” Throughout Labour Day weekend, police handed out 196 distracted driving tickets in the GTA and 407 throughout the province. There were four fatalities Tuesday.

Metroland has shoppers’ pulse Survey on range of shopping intentions collected Local businesses now have a powerful tool to connect them to shoppers who are planning to buy their products. On behalf of Metroland Media, the Economist & Sun and its sister papers in York Region, Pulse Research surveyed readers and collected in-depth information about what shoppers are planning to buy in the next 12 months. John Marling, founder of Pulse Research, described Pulse of Metroland as a prospecting tool that “gives the advertising department a direct barometer of the advertising needs of businesses. This tells you what your readers are going to buy and they’re going to be buying it locally.” The purchasing intentions of Metroland readers were collected through a Pulse survey in July and compiled in August. And while Marling noted many surveys, such as federal election polls, pull data from a sampling of between 800 and 1,600 people, more than 4,300 of our readers completed the 40-minute online survey, providing an extremely reliable sampling. The data from 4,356 respondents applies to 516 business categories “from plumbers to financial planners,” he said. The results offer interesting details about Metroland readers: • 3.2 per cent plan to have laser eye surgery • 5.6 per cent say they will go to an audiology clinic • 10.5 per cent need an electri-
cian • 16.9 per cent are planning to call a handyman • 42.3 per cent say they will shop in a bookstore • 24.9 per cent say they will start using or will change their auto insurance provider • 13.5 per cent plan to have shoes repaired • 8.7 per cent need a tune-up or repair for a bicycle • 4.9 per cent are planning to buy a bed for their dog Ian Proudfoot, publisher and vice-president of Metroland Media in Toronto, York, Simcoe and Muskoka, is thrilled to support local businesses through this new corporate initiative. “This is extremely valuable information for our local business owners who rely on us to reach their customers, our readers,” Proudfoot said. “Knowing how many people in the market are ready and willing to spend money locally gives us the knowledge to guide our advertisers in the right direction.” Pulse of Metroland offers detailed information to businesses in each category. For example, those readers planning to shop at a furniture store in the next 12 months indicated they were intending to buy living room furniture, a mattress, area rug or other items. Fun, flavour found in family’s front yard garden By Rachel Levy-McLaughlin
The Green movement is about more than spending exorbitant amounts on organic blueberries and free-range chicken. It’s more grounded and more grassroots, and now it’s moving into our own back and even front yards. One Markham family is finding this to be true as they are connecting with neighbours through their vegetable gardens, which they started this year. “I’ve met a lot more neighbours from walking their dogs and stopping to talk to us about the garden,” said Michelle Brady, whose husband, David, and daughters Eden and Sage started the gardens. “The garden teaches our kids about sustainability, that food can be grown organically and pesticide free, and the pride in being able to feed themselves as they get older.” Michelle said they grew everything from seed indoors starting in March. They have a tea garden, three raised beds with tomatoes, kale, radish, turnips, cauliflower, and lettuce, a “fairy garden” to attract fairies, and herbs galore. Passersby always stop to chat and have really taken an interest in growing local. It only takes a 4 x 4 ft.
David and Michelle Brady, along with daughters Sage and Eden, share pride in their front-yard garden. box to grow your own. The big time issue with gardens can be weeding and watering. To curb this issue, the Bradys use raised garden beds instead of row gardens. “You get more yield out of square foot gardening than out of the standard row gardening. It utilizes every square inch of the
space,” said David. “I haven’t pulled out one weed yet this summer. In total, I spend no more than 20 minutes a day on the garden because there’s no weeding.” The family has now built a sun room to grow food year-round. The Bradys are not alone in their quest to support the trend toward
growing your own, even in a suburban setting. Backyard Groceries, a company run in Markham, for Markham (and the GTA) and by a Markham local is making efforts to help residents foster healthier living, healthier eating and a healthier community. “I grew up in Markham with street hockey and neighbours knowing neighbours,” said Bryan Gardham, founder and owner of Backyard Groceries. He wants to see that sense of community revitalized. “Communities get together over gardens. It’s one of the things we all have in common. It’s one of the building blocks,” says Gardham. “If people grow their own food, they interest their neighbours, share with them and become closer.” That’s the inspiration behind Backyard Groceries as well. “My goal is to inspire self-sufficiency,” said Gardham, “because we’re like hobbits, really. We like to see things grow” and eat them. A freshly picked, home-grown tomato tastes infinitely better than what is purchasable at the grocery stores. We all know that, he says. The issue is time. Between jobs, school, kids, clubs and errands, who has the time to

tend to a vegetable garden? “Everybody’s trying to save time or money or both”, said Gardham. “This actually enables you to save both. Instead of going to the grocery store for herbs, salad, or produce, you can go to the backyard and pick it.” “There are watering systems available with a timer attached to the faucet. If you design it right and set it up right, time isn’t an issue,” said Gardham. As for the monetary aspect of gardening, Gardham says, “you can grow $900 worth of food in 32 square feet. If you can do that, why wouldn’t you? Otherwise it’s just a patch of grass.” For the Brady clan, that was one of the main reasons they decided to turn their yards into gardens. “The [lawn] space was wasted; we didn’t use it. We were just cutting the grass. We wanted to utilize it, make it purposeful,” said David. In the Bradys’ four gardens: a tea garden, herb garden, vegetable garden and the fairy garden (complete with edible flowers for the fairies), everything is edible. “The garden is where people learn about nature,” said Gardham, “and where the Green movement really starts.”

The 39th annual Thornhill Village Festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on the side streets of historic Thornhill, including Colborne Street, Eliza Street, Thornhill Summit Drive and Church Lane. Families will enjoy more than 100 booths, a variety of food, a beer garden, music, events for children, battle re-enactments and more. Entrance for 2015 is by voluntary donation, suggested: adults $2, seniors and teens (13-19) $1. Children (12 and under) and those in heritage costume, free. For details and full schedule, go to thornhillfestival.org But do you know how Thornhill got its name and who the founder of the community was? Benjamin Thorn was born in 1794 in Dorset, England, and came to Canada in 1820. “When Benjamin Thorn came to Thornhill it was nothing,” said Barry Nelson, president of the Society for the Preservation of Historic Thornhill, who spoke during an August funding announcement concerning a statue being built next year to honour the community’s founder and celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017.
Bought local mills Thorn opened a store, and was able to buy several mills around Thornhill. “We don’t have them any more, but some of what we have today came about as a result of these mills,” said Nelson. Thorn became one of the largest exporters of flour to England and an importer of goods. He became director of the Bank of Upper Canada and the Toronto branch of the Commercial Bank of the Midland District. Later he was director and president of the Toronto branch of the Bank of Montreal. He unsuccessfully ran against William Lyon Mackenzie in the 1830 provincial election. During this time, he established a post office and donated land for the Anglican Church. He was also secretary of a group that imported books for the community. He was commissioned as a magistrate in 1833, appointed trustee to pave Yonge Street and he was commissioned captain in the 4th Regiment of North York militia. Thorn also had a large family; he married and had nine children. “They went on to do some great things as well,” said Nelson. During an economic depression and the collapse of the British market, the banks were forced to call back loans and Thorn was financially ruined. He took his life in 1848. - Laura Finney

Region’s employees set lofty goal for United Way drive By Chris Traber
ctraber@yrmg.com
York Region staff and York Regional Police have set a record $450,000 goal for their 2015 United Way employee campaign. Prior to unveiling the ambitious target, a $52,000 increase on last year’s fundraising tally, York Region chairperson and CEO Wayne Emmerson briefed Wednesday’s standing room rally at the Newmarket regional administration centre on past performance. “For more than two decades, York Region and York Regional Police employees have raised more than $3.3 million to help local people in need,” he said. “But our work is not done. Poverty, hunger, abuse and people at risk still exist. An investment in United Way is an investment in our community.” York Regional Police Deputy Chief and United Way campaign co-chairperson André Crawford noted that while his officers are in the community 24/7, they rely heavily on the various non-profit agencies supported by United Way. “We value these organizations and the huge difference they make in our communities,” he said, noting Invest in People is the year’s slogan. “Remember, even a little can mean a lot to a person in need.” MC Bruce Macgregor, York Region’s Chief Administrative Officer, said he’s confident the lofty goal will be attained. Last year, the employee initiative, led by payroll deductions, bake sales, baseball challenges and barbecues, surpassed the campaign goal of $440,000 by collecting $448,081. York Region commissioner of finance and United Way campaign co-chairperson Bill Hughes said United Way has been alleviating suffering for decades. Still, many people in our neighbourhoods continue to suffer invisibly and in silence. “United Way agencies do real things for real people,” he said. “Every single person has worth and every little bit helps.”
After administrators and politicians mustered enthusiasm, United Way Toronto and York Region resource development senior vice-president Daniele Zanotti delivered the emotional crescendo. Zanotti recalled his days as a university co-op student and meeting a newly arrived refugee from El Salvador. The man, his brother and sister had witnessed the murder of their parents. Zanotti met the siblings at the Newcomer Orientation Assistance and Hospitality Reception Centre in Toronto in the 1990s.
“You are what happens when refugees land in Toronto and York Region. That’s the power you have in the face of what’s happening in the world.” He reminisced how, between his son’s recent hockey games at a Scarborough tournament, Zanotti took the lad and teammates to a Subway sandwich shop. There, two decades later, he was re-acquainted with the man who now owned the franchise. The stirring reunion underscored how United Way agencies helped the family not only survive, but thrive. The grateful shop owner thanked Zanotti, telling him he was a successful business owner, his brother an engineer and his sister a family law lawyer. “Fleeing hell was one thing,” he said. “Making it in heaven was another, thanks to United Way support. You are what happens when refugees land in Toronto and York Region. That’s the power you have in the face of what’s happening in the world.” To learn how you can support United Way Toronto and York Region, visit unitedwaytyr. com.

For Markham, the presence of the Royals will mark the return of a tier two Jr. A squad since the Waxers were forced to cease operations due to financial issues after the 2011-12 season. “I think we’ve put together a pretty solid team,” Galati said. “And I’m excited to get into Markham. It’s such a storied hockey town and it has a storied rink and with the history of the club when we were in Hamilton, I’m definitely excited.” Prior to the start of Friday’s game, the Royals will be honouring some former Markham Waxers’ alumni and builders of minor hockey. Among those are former Waxers’ and National Hockey League player Ron Wilson, Gus Badali, former agent of Wayne Gretzky who coached and served as general manager of the Waxers’ junior B team in 1972 that won a championship, Unionville Minor Hockey Association and Markham Minor Hockey Association builders Don Hewson, Scotty Welsh and Graham Martin.
What could give Galati a good indication of how competitive the Royals will be could be unveiled early this season when they undergo a potentially gruelling start to their regular season that has them playing their first 10 games in a span of 14 days. That almost represents a war of attrition. “That’s a lot of hockey for a short period of time,” he acknowledged. “It will definitely be a test for us. We definitely have to be ready and try to stay healthy. We’ve got to make the best of it and try to these games. It is what it is.” After constructing the inaugural Royals’ team, Galati feels one of the strengths of this year’s team will be their overall balance. That begins in goal where the Royals will have 20-yearold veteran Nathan Colitto, who played the last three seasons with the Toronto Junior Canadiens, and Eric Pitcher, a 19-year-old Caledon resident who played in 15 games last season with the Pickering Panthers. Up front, the Royals appear to be well experienced with
Moosenee resident The Royals added some firepower with the acquisition of Nick Thomakos from the Spirit Tuesday. An 18-year-old Uxbridge resident, Thomakos played the past two years with the Spirit and was their second-leading scorer with 16 goals and 30 assists in 48 contests. “He’s a kid that I got to see play a lot,” Galati said of Thomakos. “I remember seeing him as a 16-year-old and he was one of the better players in the league and hopefully he can continue to put up some points for us.” Joining Thomakos in a trade
from the Spirit for cash was 19-year-old Unionville resident Liam O’Dette, a forward who has been plagued by injuries over the last two seasons. “I remember seeing him as a midget player and he’s had some bad luck with injuries,” Galati said of O’Dette. Expected to bolster the Royals’ forward lines will be the return of 17-year-old Rylee St. Onge, who recently returned from the Ontario Hockey League’s Flint Firebirds’ camp. Last season with Hamilton, St. Onge amassed 22 goals and 13 assists. “He’s a kid that skates well and had 22 goals last season as a 16-year-old,” Galati said of the St. Catharines native. Anchoring the defence will be Khadyn Butterfly, a 20-yearold Moosenee resident who played in 16 games last season when the club was in Hamilton and had three goals and one assist in 16 contests; Joel Knight, a 20-year-old Hamilton native who spent the last two seasons when the club was in Hamilton and had seven goals and 14 assists in 54 regular season contests; and Jason O’Connor, a 20-year-
old Stoney Creek native who was with the Red Wings over the last three campaigns and had four goals and 26 assists last season. Helping to bolster the
defence will be the acquisition of 20-year-old Matt Dunlop, who came with Bruce to the Royals last week in exchange for forwards Otis Goldman and Kris Hamlin.

Suspect charged in gas station holdup
The Markham Economist & Sun | Thursday, September 10, 2015 |

A man was arrested after a Markham gas bar was robbed Friday night. York Regional Police say officers responded to a call about an armed robbery at a gas station at Kennedy Road and Hwy. 7 at 8:45 p.m. A man entered the station brandishing what was believed to be a handgun and demanded cash. The clerk co-operated and the thief fled the store. The employee was not hurt. Responding officers viewed video surveillance and recognized a suspect. They went to a residence and placed a man under arrest without incident, also seizing a pellet gun
POLICE
BRIEFS believed to have been used in the robbery. Mohammed Hasan Chaudhary, 19, of Markham is charged with robbery and use of a firearm during the commission of an indictable offence. He is to appear in court Sept. 28.

The Markham Mariners AAA rookies advanced to the final of the Ontario Baseball Association playdowns before coming out on the short end of an 8-4 decision against Cambridge in the deciding game of the double knockout format in Kitchener Monday. Buoyed by some timely hits delivered by leadoff hitter Avery Rauzino, Nathan Aspinall, Ben Hicks, Nickolas Da Rosa, Tyler Fuh and Andrew Hill, the Mariners jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. But Cambridge battled back in their half of the frame with four runs to tie the score. Riding that momentum, Cambridge added four more runs while holding the Mariners at bay to claim the title. Mariners’ short stop Quinn McCulloch earned the tournament’s most valuable player honour. The Mariners were edged in their opening game Friday 4-3 by Mississauga North. Facing elimination with one more loss, the Mariners reeled off six straight wins that began the following day with verdicts over Whitby 16-1, Milton 7-6 and host Kitchener 11-1, eliminating them from the tournament. The Mariners carried that momentum to Sunday blanking Burlington 8-0 and defeating North York for the first time after two prior losses during the season 8-0. Later that day, the Mariners faced a do-or-die situation in which they played Cambridge, who had not lost a game in the tournament. The Mariners responded with an 8-0 win to force the deciding game Monday. Coached by Mike Fuh, Ricky Da Rosa, Paul Hicks and Fraser McCulloch, other team members

Michael Bucci always made time for others By Tim Kelly

he doorbell woke up Lucy Bucci at 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 29, 2014. Her son, Michael, hadn’t arrived home to Richmond Hill following recreation hockey in Scarborough. She went to the door, wondering who it could be? Her first foggy thought was Michael had forgotten his house key or maybe her daughter, Melissa, had forgotten hers. But when she peeked through the window, Lucy saw two police officers and two women from victim services. She soon got the news every parent dreads. “Your son was in a terrible car accident,” the officer said. “He succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.” Lucy said her husband, Bruce, with serious health concerns of his own, was hysterical at the news and her daughter was frozen stiff at the top of the stairs. As for Lucy, her brain simply shut down, then and there. The next day at 7 a.m., she went to the coroners’ office in Toronto to identify her only son. “I saw him on a screen. The detectives were still there. He was just smiling, with a beautiful little smile with his eyes closed. He looked angelic,” Lucy said. “It’s just a horrible, horrible

mond Hill that took Michael’s life at the age of 27. But nobody could give her any answers.
Celebrate a life well lived!
“Adored by children, universally respected and an inspiration to her peers, Mrs. McCluskey was a tireless volunteer, quick to deflect the praise heaped on her.”
“It eats away at you — initially, every day I was searching and searching for an answer. I met with the coroner twice. “No alcohol, no sickness, no drugs, no texting. How did this happen? Is it mechanical? Is it human error? What caused this? The officer stated the only person who knows is not here to tell us,” she said. Lucy only has memories of Michael now, the young man she remembers vividly. “I miss that boy. I miss his walking in saying, ‘Hello, hello, what’s for dinner, what are we eatin’ tonight,’ cause he was all about food,” she said in a recent phone conversation. Michael was the kind of man she said, who, “no matter where he went, he stopped and spoke to every single person, even if he hadn’t seen them in 15 years, he stopped and talked to them.” “So many people in the community have told me he came up to them and said, ‘How’s it going, how are you doing?’ Michael was such a regular young man, with goals and dreams of the future. He attended elementary school at Our Lady Help of Christian and Father Henri Nouwen and went to high school at St Theresa of Liseuix. With fiancée Jessica Couto, he had plans to marry this past April. The two had been together five years at the time of the crash, had pur-

chased a house, were saving for their future together and were big Maple Leaf fans. Michael was a Red Seal electrician, helped out his grandparents in Caledon by mowing the grass in summer and covering the airconditioner in winter. He was a true outdoorsman, according to his mom, a videographer who started a small business, Camvast Productions with two friends doing videos and photography and produced a book called Glory and Triumph. His mom called him “a mover and shaker.” Lucy and Melissa have had a tough year. Bruce, who has scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that is a chronic hardening and tightening of the skin, is now terminally ill with lung cancer. Just 54, Bruce is back and forth to Sunnybrook Hospital and is very sick. “I haven’t been able to take a breath,” Lucy said in mid-August. She has plans to have a memorial for Michael, but they are on hold for now. She only knows that she wishes she had travelled more with her son when she had the chance. “I was one of these parents, I would read about it in the paper and hear it on the news and I’d say, ‘Oh my God, that poor family and on and on.’ “When I went through this I said, ‘Oh, this wasn’t supposed to be me.’”
