BARN FIRE IN MARKHAM Markham firefighters responded to a fire on 19th Avenue at 10:30 Sunday morning. The fire, in a vacant barn east of Dickson Hill, was brought under control. A “defensive attack” — fighting the fire from outside the building — was initiated to secure a heritage house next door, the department said. There were no reported injuries and a cause has not yet been determined. It was the second fire in a vacant building in York Region on the same day. A second fire broke out in a vacant house in Oak Ridges earlier Sunday.

The search is underway for a suspect following three break-and-enters in Markham. On Aug. 19, the suspect entered at least three homes in the Carlton and Kennedy roads area. The suspect entered the buildings through unlocked doors. Once inside, he took jewelry, cash and electronics. The incidents took place between midnight and 5 a.m. and, in most cases, residents were inside the homes sleeping, but did not hear the suspect. “In recent break and enter cases across the region, thieves have been gaining entry into homes through unlocked interior garage doors,” York Regional Police Const. Andy Pattenden said. “In some of the cases, thieves have been opening the main garage door by accessing the remote entry left in unlocked vehicles. Residents are reminded to lock all of the doors that lead into your home, including interior doors that may lead to a garage.” Residents should also lock vehicle doors, he said. The suspect was captured on video surveillance attempting to enter a locked residence. He is described as white and 20 to 35 years old. He has a goatee and wore a black Toronto Blue Jays baseball cap, a black hoodie, blue shorts and black shoes with white stripes. Anyone with information on this incident can contact the YRP No. 5 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7542 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-tips, by leaving an anonymous tip at 1800222tips. com or by texting ‘CRIMES’ (274637), starting with the word ‘YORK’.

CHICKENS TURKEYS! PIZZA! ROASTING

We’re going to feature our really large air-chilled chickens. To start with, these chickens run loose in really large barns, but by definition these are not ‘free-range’ because they have no access to the outdoors. They eat as much or as little as they want, usually a lot, of corn and grain. The air-chilled part refers to the de-feathering process and after. Rather than using really hot water to remove the feathers and outside layers of skin, cooler water is used, which leaves the skin on, and unfortunately the odd feather, a bit of a trade-off really, and then they are left to chill down in circulating air rather than an ice bath. A lot of the flavour of poultry comes from the skin, partially explaining why the anemic white chickens you see are generally flavourless, and wet from the ice-bath. Ours are dry and flavourful, and our guys usually get the feathers OFF before you do! These chickens average about 5 lbs. in size, give or take. THIS wEEK Reg. $3.95/lb

House prices? Terrible, right?

W

hat do you think of today’s house prices? The answer you might have if you’re a politician, “policy analyst” or parent of twentysomethings is to be outraged simple townhouses are exceeding the half-a-million-dollar mark. “Did you see how much they’re asking for that place? Ridiculous!” you hear a neighbour say, although he or she has a glint in their eye and the calculator is clicking in their head about what their place might fetch some day. The Toronto Real Estate Board says as of September the average price of a detached home in York now exceeds $1.2 million. Wow! So there’s definitely that sentiment that when someone puts a house up for sale, everyone on the street hopes they get the max, there is a bidding war, or the secretive, wealthy person in a foreign land desperate to get their wealth into a safe haven like Canada, will buy the place sight unseen, well over asking price. Which all sounds dandy, except that you have to think it is all going to end badly some day, when our own kids are forced to move to Wawa to find a home they can afford. (Wawa is a nice place — I lived there for a year — a good place to raise kids, they say — you just have to accept that it is very close to fishing and snowmobile trails and far from the ROM, Roy Thomson Hall, the ACC, etc.) Or when businesses in the GTA or Vancouver cannot attract workers because those workers can’t afford to live there. Which might drive up wages in the long run, sure. But it might also precipitate an exodus of businesses from large urban centres when, in this digital age, where you work doesn’t matter so much. Of course, there’s the other phenomenon, felt closer to home, and one you hear about, the “kids” who never move away. Which will have a broader societal impact as our beloved sons and daughters spend their 20s and then 30s, single and living in mom and dad’s basement, playing video games or watching Netflix and forever raiding the snack supply as he or she saves up for the required

MAR KHAM

Bernie O’Neill downpayment that gets bigger every year. They dream the parents will just leave the family home to them, or sell it and “lend” them the huge downpayment dough. But who can sell when everything out there to buy costs so much? So while it may be great for some — homeowners who have built up a lot of equity and are at an age where they could sell and downsize or sell and move to some town that is much cheaper — it could be crippling for others. An infusion of wealth into our economy, sure. But ... A lot of the GTA demand is due to normal growth and lack of supply. With B.C. clamping down on foreign buying, it will add to demand here. Where does it end? Think of it this way — there’s suddenly huge demand for Ontario’s farm products. It’s wonderful at first. Prices shoot up and our grocers and farmers get rich! Great! Until a bunch of us can’t afford to buy food at the new higher prices — and end up at the food bank. Mind you, the great thing about real estate is that it is a “real” asset. Unlike a field of corn, which you cannot really live in (Field of Dreams excepted) you get to live in a house, walk around in your bare feet, let the dog scratch up the hardwood floor, occasionally burn the dinner and have the place fill with smoke — because you got distracted when the washing machine overflowed and water seeped into the floor — and someone still wants to give you a million dollars for it! Amazing! For now, I just try to think of our place as “home sweet home,” where the dog comes running to greet me at the end of the day, and not as an investment I will need to make some high-stakes and lifechanging decision about, down the road. I sleep better that way.

Do foreign buyers pay enough taxes? After reading many articles in Canadian newspapers about the recently implemented Foreign Buyers Tax, I wonder why our Ontario premier has not addressed the same issues in her own province? If the reports from the census that we completed recently are similar to those in British Columbia, it will show that some of the most expensive real estate in York Region gives evidence that the residents must be living in poverty according to the lack of income they report on tax returns. Many of the properties are registered as being owned by students attending school here, while parents are operating businesses abroad. All the while funneling money into Canada to “support” the student and other members of the family living here in Canada. While property taxes are paid, little to no income tax is paid, because the student is in the lowest tax tier.

As residents of Canada, we all know income taxes pay for infrastructure, health care and social programs. Canadianpoliticiansneed to address these issues.

Vicky Tomev Markham

Don’t pave over lawns for parking The city of Markham bylaw staff have no teeth to enforce their laws. The city of Markham proudly display billboards requesting that residents keep our city green, yet some residents think they can replace the front lawn at their house and turn it into a helicopter pad [for parking]. I wonder whatever happened to our beautiful city of Markham? The law makers of the city talk about various action plans to protect our landscape; yet no one seems have the courage to enforce it. The homeowners who want to convert their front lawn into a helicopter pad

should have a permit to do so from the city. I do not want our street turned into a parking lot and become an eyesore for the people who live in the neighbourhood.

Kingsley George Markham

Take lesson from others Re: Let’s try harder to fight litter problem, yorkregion.com. I was in Cape Breton last month on a golf trip, and I see they give five cents per water bottle and can if you return the empties. I was surprised I didn’t see many cans and water bottles anywhere. It might be something to think about if Vaughan can accommodate this recycling idea. Cape Breton also uses clear garbage bags: if there is something in there that shouldn’t be they will ticket you on the spot — they are really cracking down on this problem. It’s a start in the right direction.

A big party is scheduled to take place along Main Street in Unionville and at the Markham Pan Am Centre Sunday afternoon. But it’s not being conducted to commemorate someone’s birthday or anniversary. Rather, it’s to pay tribute to Markham’s athletes who participated at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Headlining that select group will be three-time Olympic medallist Andre De Grasse. A Milliken Mills High School graduate who made his Olympic debut in Rio de Janeiro, the 21-year-old De Grasse made his presence felt on the track after running his way to a silver medal in the 200 metres and bronze in the 100m and 4 x 100m relay. In performing that feat, De Grasse became the first Canadian sprinter to claim three medals in an Olympics. Accompanying De Grasse in Sunday’s celebration will be individual epee performer Maxime Brinck-Croteau and women’s rugby seven’s referee Rose Labreche. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti noted other Markham Olympic performers were invited, but could not attend. The celebration will begin with a parade, starting at the corner of Main and Carleton Road in Unionville at noon. It travels south toward the Markham Pan Am Centre at 16 Main St. S. A ceremony recognizing the achieve-

Canadian Olympic star Andre De Grasse of Markham. ments of De Grasse and the other Markham Olympic athletes will take place inside the Markham Pan Am Centre starting at 1 p.m. Eagerly looking forward to Sunday’s festivities, Scarpitti said it will provide an opportunity residents to meet the local 2016 Summer Games athletes up close and personal and pay homage for their accomplishments. “It will provide a chance to salute them all. This is our chance to say thanks and to congratulate them.” In addition to the parade and ceremony, Scarpitti was quick to note there will be other fun-filled events taking place just outside the centre that will create the feeling of a big block party. “We will have music, buskers, food

trucks, Samba dancers...it will really be a party atmosphere,” he said in anticipation of Sunday’s event. With limited seating inside the Markham Pan Am Centre, Scarpitti said a big screen will also be constructed outside so everyone who cannot get a seat can watch the ceremonies. Youth Assisting Youth is a mentor program, where youth are referred and matched with a mentor. This year, the program is focusing on newcomers. Mentor Lance Hui, left, joins Yao Chen, 14, for some one-on-one time.

Youth mentors needed in Markham, Aurora and Newmarket BY AMANDA PERSICO

apersico@yrmg.com

For more than 40 years, Youth Assisting Youth has been helping at-risk or newcomer youth find role models. “We want to help prevent at-risk youth getting involved with the wrong crowd,”

program recruitment co-ordinator Paula da Rocha said. Now the organization is seeking male volunteers to help mentor local youth. There are dozens of youth who are on a wait list, with Aurora, Markham and Newmarket high demand areas, da Rocha said.

CANADIAN BAR STOOLS 15% OFF THIS MONTH Quality Canadian made bar stools that will look great in any kitchen.

Many of the matches made in the Markham area are for newcomer youth, she added. “Coming to Canada can be a turbulent time,” she said. “Mom and dad are overwhelmed trying to settle into a new culture.” This is where mentors have some of the most impact, she added, by helping with academics, building confidence and just being someone with whom to practise speaking English. That’s the case with Lance Hui, 29, who was matched with Yao Chen, 14. The Chen family emigrated from China in 2009. Over the past year, Hui has noticed a change in Yao. “He was really shy, didn’t say much,” said Hui, a Markham resident. “Now, he’s going out more, hanging out with friends. His confidence is up.”

The Markham match is one of more than 1,200 peer-to-peer matches, where youth between the ages of six and 15 are matched based on compatibility with mentors between the ages of 16 and 29. “The hope is the pair will become friends and build a friendship, not just mentor-mentee,” da Rocha said. Each week, the pair hang out, play video games or head to the park for a game of catch. Next week, Yao starts Grade 9. So, this summer has been more about gearing up for change, talking about the new school environment, bullying and other fears, Hui said. Why does Mendel, the much-loved pharmacist, feel compelled to sin right before Yom Kippur, the holiday of atonement? The answer and this fable is taken from a collection of short stories about Jewish immigrants who settled in North America after the Second World War, called A Calendar of Northern Fables, by John Syrtash. Syrtash, a lawyer by profession, launched his book, his first work of fiction, in Thornhill Sept. 6. at the BATY Synagogue. Fables in the book follow many of the Jewish holidays and poke fun at the lifestyle, rituals and mythologies brought over from “the old country”.

The book takes readers inside the homes and synagogues of observant Jews and explains some of the customs followed by this community. What is the reason for the knotted strings dangling from the hips of religious men? How do observant young people date without ever touching each other? A Calendar of Northern Fables is a look at Jewish immigrants in the 1950s and the lives of their descendants today. “Although a lawyer by profession, Syrtash has a penchant for creating vivid images of the modern Jewish shtetl,” says Rabbi Daniel Korobkin of Thornhill’s Beth Avraham

‘John Syrtash recreates for the reader a world circumscribed by Toronto’s Jewish community — a world of observant Jewry with its beliefs, its traditions and its foibles’

Thornhill Village Festival turns 40 this weekend

Yosef of Toronto, in a testimonial from the book’s media kit. “Reminiscent of the style of Sholem Aleichem, John Syrtash recreates for the reader a world circumscribed by Toronto’s Jewish community — a world of observant Jewry with its beliefs, its traditions and its foibles. Told with empathy and gentle humour, Syrtash’s stories introduce the reader to Yiddish expressions, Jewish history, wise rabbis and adoring but not always wise parents, and the need to celebrate each day,” says author Joan O’Callaghan, an English professor at the University of Toronto, in the media kit. Go to amazon.ca for copies of the book and yorkregion.com for more on this story.

Turning 40 is a major event in a person’s life; so too is it a major landmark in the life of a community festival. The Thornhill Village Festival turns 40 this year. The fun is set for this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17 and 18, and will be held on both sides of Thornhill, in the cities of Markham and Vaughan. Thornhill Summit Drive will feature midway rides. There will also be local musicians, a kids’ area, activities for teens, the King’s Royal Yorkers, an art walk, a baking competition, Best Buds (dog costume) contest, community booths, a variety of food and a beer garden. On Saturday, the festival will be held on the Markham side of Thornhill, while on Sunday, it will be on the Vaughan side. On the Markham side of Yonge Street, organizers are using four streets for the festival but they are not main arteries. They include: Colborne Street, Church Lane, Elizabeth Street and Thornhill Summit Drive. Both Centre Street on the Vaughan side and John Street on the Markham side will be open to traffic all day. In its 40-year history, this festival has had its share of highs and lows, including bad weather and poor or insufficient funding. The festival was first organized back in 1977 to bring the two parts of the politically divided community together and use Yonge Street as a unifyer rather than as a divider.

Back in 2010, the festival was cancelled because of a scheduling conflict as the event was scheduled to take place during the key Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. Part of this year’s event is a Sunday Thornhill Music Festival at the Thornhill Park near the Thornhill Outdoor Pool in the Center Street and Yonge Street area on the Vaughan side. This year’s entertainers will include headliner Pop Cherry who has performed at Massey Hall, Mayfly’s Landing and Man Made Forest, who have just completed an east coast tour of Canada together in support of their new CDs. Local bands, several of which are based out of Thornhill, will be performing: Rockwell, The Ben Crosby Band, The Cunninghams, The King Beez, Happy Jack and the Rainmakers, Castro Radio, Music Box, Pulse in Tempo, The Generations, TREO, and Talking In Our Sleep. The Sound Rehearsal studios are sponsoring a VIP area for volunteers, organizers, musicians, media and select dignitaries. About 10 or 12 groups will perform Sunday on two stages — a City of Vaughan stage and a smaller one. The Thornhill Village Festival is organized entirely by a community volunteer committee. Go to thornhillhistoric.org/ for more information on this society.

Markham Veterans honoured with new benches BY AMANDA PERSICO

apersico@yrmg.com

The Markham District Veterans Association received a surprise addition to its Main Street Markham building. Two custom designed benches were bolted to the ground in front of the association’s building. These are more than just benches to sit on, said the association’s current president John Chalmers. “It reminds people what this place is, what veterans are about,” he said. The benches feature a cutout that depicts a First World War scene with soldiers, ironclad barbed wire and red poppies. “It’s a real, great work of art. There was a lot of thought put into it,” said John Milligan, who served in the air force during the Second World War. “And they are as prominent in the city as you can get.” While the benches have a ‘Made in Canada’ stamp, making these benches special, it is the looks from passersby that make them more meaningful. “You see all these high school kids walking by and stopping to look at the benches,” association member Sam Curry said. “These kids are questioning and talking about the benches, talking about our veterans.” The benches, costing about $1,400 each, were provided by the city as a “one-time contribution to honour the veterans who served Canada during various wars,” said the city’s director of corporate communications, Dennis Flaherty in an email. “They were designed and developed as meaningful pieces of interactive art that provide resting space for veterans and the public,” he added. “With these additions to our public realm, we hope people will engage in conversations with veterans about their contributions to support Canadian shared values of freedom and world peace.” The initial request was put forward by area Councillor Karen Rea during the 2016 budget process, when local councillors can

make requests. The city is also in the process of a major redesign for the current Markham Village Library Square, which is to become the new Veterans Square and Cenotaph. The city received about $950,000 to cover 50 per cent of the cost through the federal government’s Canada 150 Community Infrastructure grant program. Construction is expected to start this fall and is expected to be complete by next fall.

United Way Toronto, York Region sets $101M goal BY JUSTIN SKINNER

jskinner@metroland.com

A year after the United Way merged its Toronto and York Region operations, the organization has launched an ambitious and record-setting yearly campaign for the area. The United Way Toronto & York Region managed to top $100 million in donations over the past year, and is looking to top that impressive total in the coming year, setting a goal of $101.5 million. At a campaign launch event at RBC WaterPark Place on Queens Quay West on Tuesday, United Way CEO Daniele Zanotti said the lofty goal reflects the consolidated organization’s growth in fundraising power. “One year into our merged United Way Toronto & York Region, what an impact we have had together. Last year, we raised a record $100,250,000 for these communities from Lake Simcoe to Lake Ontario.”

Zanotti said the merger between the Toronto and York Region branches led to a three per cent increase in overall funding. “That’s something we hadn’t experienced in York Region in years and years,” he said. “Companies that have their head offices in Toronto or York Region are now more able to mobilize and come together.” The funds raised by the United Way Toronto & York Region will support some 220 member agencies throughout the regions, with a focus on community and neighbourhood-building, youth employment and poverty reduction. The services that the United Way supports help in many ways, including helping young people like Nivethan Amirthalingam find work. He took part in United Wayfunded networking opportunities to secure a job at RBC. “It really helped me develop my professional network and made me a better per-

TIME IS RUNNING OUT!

Two convenience stores in York Region will not be allowed to sell tobacco products for six months after being convicted of selling to underage youth. Region of York officials served notice of prohibition to Neighbourhood Convenience, at 669 Major Mackenzie Dr. E., and Levendale Convenience, at 26 Levendale Rd., both in Richmond Hill, as a result of repeated noncompliance with the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, according to a release from the region this week. The stores are prohibited from the sale, storage and delivery of tobacco products effective Sept. 12, the release said. The Major Mackenzie location has been convicted several times before – in April 2015, April 2014 and September 2013. York Region Public Health tobacco control officers conduct youth inspections of vendors following community complaints and as part of a routine testing program to deter illegal tobacco sales to underage youth. “Tobacco use is the No. 1 cause of preventable disease and death in Ontario,” said Dr. Karim Kurji, York Region’s Medical Officer of Health. “It is important to prohibit access to

tobacco for people under 19 years of age. Children and youth who do not start using tobacco are less likely to start smoking later in life.” The Smoke-Free Ontario Act bans the public display of tobacco products prior to purchase and prohibits the sale or supply of tobacco products to persons under the age of 19.

“Tobacco use is the No. 1 cause of preventable disease and death in Ontario” Under the Act, tobacco vendors who have two or more convictions within a five-year period for selling tobacco to persons younger than 19 years of age are subject to an automatic prohibition. This prohibits the vendor from selling or storing tobacco products on the premises and bans tobacco wholesalers or distributors from delivering tobacco products to the vendor for the period of time of the ban. To report a tobacco vendor selling tobacco products to underage youth, contact York Region Public Health at 1-800-361-5653 or TTY 1-866-512-6228. All calls are confidential.

A section of 14th Avenue in the east end of Markham has been closed for construction and will stay closed through to December. 14th Avenue between Reesor Road and 11th Concession was closed for bridge work starting Sept. 12. Thornhill teen headed for Germany dance contest By SIMONE JOSEPH

sjoseph@yrmg.com

Claude Labuschagne wakes up thinking about dance, dances all day and goes to bed thinking about — you guessed it: dance. Sometimes, his mother needs to remind him that tapping on the third floor of their home at midnight is not great for her sleep. Claude, 14, is a Grade 10 student at Thornhill’s Westmount Collegiate Institute. He is in the Westmount Arts program. He dances at Dance Surge in Thornhill in the school’s full-time competitive program. Claude dances every day, even over the summer when others are taking time off. “He never rests and always sets himself short-term goals to become a better dancer,”

his mother Monica Labuschagne says. Since he was a little boy, Claude loved watching his sister dance. He was always his sister’s biggest supporter. Then, at the age of 12 he decided to give dancing a shot himself and before long, he was hooked. Claude was chosen out of hundreds of dancers to be part of the Canadian national dance team competing in the IDO World Tap Dance Championships 2016 (IDO stands for International Dance Organization), which runs from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3. in Riesa, Germany. To get to the competition in Germany, he needs to raise $3,500. Click online on his Gofundme account at https://www. gofundme.com/HelpClaudeGermany for more information on how to support him.

Westmount Collegiate student Claude Labuschange, 14, loves to dance and was selected to a Canadian national dance team, competing in Germany this fall.

JOAN STONEHOCKER the impact of the 2008-09 recession on older workers who lost jobs and found it difficult to find new jobs at similar rates of pay as their old jobs. Not surprisingly, the majority of the region’s working poor live in the more densely populated southern municipalities. Markham had 38.6 per cent of the region’s working poor in 2012, compared to Vaughan’s 24.1 per cent and Richmond Hill’s 20.1 per cent. In the north, 5.6 per cent of the working poor lived in Newmarket, 3.2 per cent lived in Aurora, 3.3 per cent lived in Georgina, 1.4 per cent lived in King, 1.3 per cent lived in East Gwillimbury and 2.5 per cent lived in Whitchurch-Stouffville. The growing number of working poor comes as no surprise to the executive director of York Region’s Food Network. “Of course it’s worrisome and we’ve been ignoring it long enough,” Joan Stonehocker said. “I think what we’re seeing from the food end of things is more and more people are struggling to eat because they are spending more and more on housing. Affordable housing is not getting to the people who need it the most.” Stonehocker was reacting to a new report coming to regional council Sept. 22 on the increasing number of working poor in the region. “For some, having a job is not enough to pull them out of low income and they can face challenges in making ends meet,” the report by the region’s community and health services department stated. It traces trends from 2006 to 2012 based on information from Statistics Canada’s 2006 and 2012 income tax data. In 2012, 42,930 of residents aged 18 to 64, or 8 per cent, were classified as the working poor. That was up from 31,270, or 6.6 per cent, of that age group in 2002. The region’s working poor are aging, the report said. Residents 30 to 44 years old were the largest age group among the working poor in York Region in both 2006 and 2012. However, number of older workers (44 to 64 years old) increased faster and, as a result, made up a growing percentage of all working poor, it said. This trend was likely driven by York Region’s overall aging profile and possibly

Woman scams CRA scammers with fantastical story BY JEREMY GRIMALDI

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

When Dawn Belmonte’s father was in his final years, suffering from Lukemia and being treated with chemotherapy, he was fleeced by Internet scammers for $15,000. So when Belmonte began answering calls from bogus Canada Revenue operators on top of the hundreds of phony air duct cleaning companies and computer virus scammers, Belmonte finally grew fed up. “It’s almost like I was taken over,” the mother of three boys from Woodbridge said recently. “I became so into it I kept embellishing my lies more and more. I don’t know how I came up with it, it just flowed from my mouth.” What she is referring to is the recording she took of her conversation with a man that is setting the Internet on fire. The YouTube video not only shows a glimpse into the kind of calls thousands of Canadians receive each year, but also an imaginative way to deal with the calls. In this case, Belmonte manages to scam the scammers. The swindle works like this.

People in Canada are called and threatened with arrest or even deportation if they don’t pay some sort of fee. But instead of falling for the intricate fraud, Belmonte begins by giving the operator a phony name, before swiftly weaving a fantastical story about how her husband was arrested for tax-fraud leaving her and her six children, penniless. Her bogus story grows even more elaborate as the caller, with a heavy East Indian accent, continues to feed her his lines. The scam involves him threatening her with arrest if she fails to pay $2,500 for what he claims was some sort of illegal activity on her part. The caller tells her if she wires him the money he will call off the arrest warrant and put to rest her $25,000 bill. In a whiny, helpless, sobbing voice Belmonte grows even bolder as her story becomes even more unbelievable suggesting she is going to be deported back to the United States and even had to borrow $50 from a neighbour just to buy milk for her children. “I thought they would catch on

Dawn Belmonte gets even with phone fraudsters years after her father was scammed out of thousands of dollars. and hang up, but they kept eating it up,” she said, explaining how the operator continually asks her to pawn goods and borrow money from others to pay him. After more than three minutes on the phone, the caller breaks down asking Belmonte not to be so emotional, adding that everything he told her was one big “scam”. “Let me tell you one thing, no need to cry,” he says. “Everything we told you is totally wrong. If you get a call from anybody asking

for money don’t pay anything to them.” As for how she feels towards the scammers, she said in the past she has felt sorry for them, thinking to herself “they’re just trying to make money to feed their families”. However, it doesn’t take long for her thoughts to shift toward the countless elderly and vulnerable people, much like her father, who’ve been ripped off by these people. Belmonte said although she had dreams of grandeur while on the phone with the scammer, imagining her phone recording bringing down the whole international organization of CRA fraudsters , she quickly found out that was a fantasy. “I thought I was going to be a local hero, finally getting one of these guys to confess on video,” she said. “But when I spoke to the police they said it’s almost impossible to actually catch people for these crimes.” Investigators told her these scammers have high-end technology and work offshore making it near impossible for Canadian police to do anything, unless the

countries where the scams originate want to take action, which is rare. As for whether she suggests other people taking this approach, she said she believes everyone should try. “You are never going to get a call from the CRA and they are never going to threaten you with jail and ask you to pawn things,” she added. “So the longer you can keep them on the phone the fewer people they are going to have time to scam.” York police Const. Andy Pattenden said despite police efforts there have been no arrests to date for this or many other telephone scams, despite the service receiving multiple calls about the CRA scam alone each day. He suggested residents never send money through wiring services or Apple iTunes gift cards, which is often used by the thieves. “If you don’t know, the best way is to call companies back to verify they are who they say,” he added. 5 things that can be recycled in York

21 | The Markham Economist & Sun | Thursday, September 15, 2016

By Teresa Latchford

tlatchford@yrmg.com

Every week, York Region residents make sure their recycling hits the curb, but there are some things that just don’t fit the bill when it comes to the blue box program. There are plenty of items that can still be recycled at one of York Region’s drop-off locations.

1

Cooking oils: Liquid cooking oil such as vegetable, canola, sunflower and olive poured down the drain result in costly sewage pipe repairs every year, according to York Region. These used oils can be recycled into biodiesel if taken to a local drop-off depot in a tightly sealed container.

2

Electronics: While some parts of electronics can’t be recycled, others are valuable resources that can be reused. Examples of accepted electronic items include cellphones, telephones, laptops, modems, keyboards, monitors, printers, TVs, cameras and stereo equipment.

3

Scrap metal and appliances: Metal can be melted down and reused, while parts of appliances can be refurbished for use. Barbecues, bicycles, dishwashers, dryers, humidifiers, lawnmowers, metal bathtubs, power tools, swing sets, microwave ovens, refrigerated appliances, stoves and washing machines can all be dropped off at depots.

4

Styrofoam packaging: Large, clean foam packaging used to pack large electronics can be dropped off at select York Region depots. It is then transferred to a company that turns it into foam insulation for the construction industry.

5

Tires: Passenger and light truck tires on or off the rim as well as tractor tires can be dropped off. The rubber from the tires can be broken down and used to make landscape tiles, mulch, playground surfacing, roofing shakes, athletic flooring in gyms, carpet pads and rubber bricks or paving.

STEVE SOMERVILLE/METROLAND

Recycling assistant Sarah North and York Region waste management project co-ordinator Nikki Vecchiola at the Elgin Mills Community Environmental Centre, one of several depots where residents can drop of drywall, metal, shredded paper, electronics, wood and more to be recycled.

The armed robber who almost ran over two York Regional Police officers after they boxed in his vehicle in Toronto has been sentenced to prison time for his role in the incident. Ricky De Sousa was sentenced to 13 years in prison, however with credit for time served adding up to almost nine years, he will serve just

over four years. His case has been winding its way through the courts for some five years, the details first being investigated by the provincial police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit. De Sousa came before a Newmarket judge in March when he was found guilty of aggravated assault, escaping the attempted murder charges he originally faced. Police say De Sousa’s string of

13 knife-point gas station robberies, many in York Region, ended in December 2010 when police tracked him down, conducting a rolling stop after suspecting he and a partner were about to commit another robbery. Once he was boxed in, De Sousa put up his hands, York police Const. Steve Borovskis testified, before allegedly re-engaging and slamming on the gas, the Caravan’s

wheels spinning, smoke surrounding the scene. Prior to the badly damaged vehicle getting loose, trundling down the road, police officers who had the Caravan surrounded, fired 18 shots, the court heard, at least three bullets hitting De Sousa and his passenger. More than one officer had to leap out of the way to avoid the vehicle that drove right at them on

its way out of the block. De Sousa lost his ring finger and part of his middle finger on his left hand. Another man named Antonio DaSilva was left brain dead after a bullet was left lodged in his frontal lobe. He is currently suing the York Regional Police for millions. The SIU found no grounds for charging any of the officers involved.

Tims Smile cookies boost charities Monday marked the return of Tim Hortons annual Smile Cookie campaign running until Sept. 18 in participating restaurants across York Region and Canada. During this year’s campaign, customers can purchase a freshly baked chocolate chunk Smile Cookie for $1 plus tax, with the full $1 being donated by Tim Hortons Restaurant owners to support charities, hospitals and community programs. A little smile goes a long way. Funds raised in Richmond Hill, Thornhill and Vaughan go to the York chapter of Autism Ontario, while smile funds in Aurora and Newmarket support Community Living Newmarket-Aurora.

In Markham and Stouffville, funds raised at Tim Horton outlets support the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation, while in King City and Nobleton, Smile Cookie funds support King Township Food bank and Nobleton Kids. New this year, Tim Hortons has introduced an alternative way to take part in the Smile Cookie campaign. Guests can now show support with the purchase of a Smile Cookie car decal for $1 plus tax, with the full $1 going to local charities. To learn more, visit www.timhortons.com/smilecookie

Celebrate Ontario grants available to festivals, events BY CHRIS SIMON

csimon@yrmg.com

Festival and event organizers are encouraged to apply for Celebrate Ontario 2017 funding. This provincial grant program supported 200 festivals and events last year. Organizers of existing large festivals and events can apply for multi-year funding now, which can help provide improved experiences for visitors and, hopefully, attract more tourists. “The 2017 program will invest in cultural events, community celebrations and music festivals across the province, which helps to create jobs and grow our tourism industry,” Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Eleanor McMahon said in a press release. “Through the program, we are strengthening this vibrant sector so festival and event organizers can offer unique and enhanced experiences that attract visitors from all over Ontario and the world.” Applicants are also encouraged to add enhancements that celebrate or commemorate the 150th anniversary of Canada or Ontario, she said. In York Region, the Newmarket jazz+ Festival ($44,775) and Markham’s jazz ($26,100) and Taste of Asia ($73,666) festivals received funding in 2016, according to the province’s grants.gov.on.ca website. Between 2009 and 2014, grant recipients reported an increase of 8.5 million tourists and $1.7 billion in visitor spending due to Celebrate Ontario support. Since 2007, Celebrate Ontario has supported more than 1,900 festivals and events across the province. The application deadline is Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. For more information, visit ontario.ca/celebrateontario.

Region’s annex building expected to save $1M year BY LISA QUEEN

lqueen@yrmg.com

York Region should save almost $1 million a year over three decades once the new Annex administrative centre is built in Newmarket, corporate services commissioner Dino Basso says. Construction of the new $212-million building at Yonge and Eagle streets adjacent to the regional headquarters will begin in early 2017 and is expected to take four years to complete. Doane House Hospice will remain at the corner of Yonge and Eagle.

No change of location The Annex will consolidate a number of services, including public health clinics, social services, Ontario Works, housing services, provincial offences courts, the York Small Business Enterprise Centre and Access York customer service, under one roof. Housing the services in the Annex will save the region $26 million over 30 years by consolidating a variety of satellite locations throughout Newmarket rather than continuing to lease or invest in aging facilities, Basso said Leases at the Tannery Mall at 465 Davis Dr., 520 Cane Pkwy. and 1091 Gorham St. will

end when staff from those locations move into the Annex in 2020. The region is still determining the future use of its leased location at 17310 Yonge once the Annex opens. Meanwhile, the region is also determining the future use of properties it owns at 22 Prospect St., 62 Bayview Pkwy., 194 and 55 Eagle St. and the Gates of York plaza at 17310 Yonge St. WZMH Architects designed the building and it will be constructed by a builder to be determined after the tender closes in September. In the spring of 2015, 10 months after council endorsed a previous decision to build the Annex adjacent to the regional headquarters, two councillors tried to have the project relocated. Markham Councillor Jim Jones and Vaughan Councillor Michael Di Biase argued the building should be constructed at Yonge and Hwy. 7, where Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan intersect, because it would serve more people in the more densely populated south part of the region. A few weeks later, they abandoned the idea, saying there was no appetite around the council table to change the location.

Markham Jr. A Royals trade for new players as puck drops on 2016-17 regular season

Reds defeat Cardinals to capture senior baseball title The Thornhill Reds captured the inaugural Greater Toronto Baseball League/Central Ontario Baseball Association senior championship with a 7-0 win over the Erindale Cardinals in the deciding game of their best-of-three series at Etobicoke Centennial Park, Sunday. Reds’ starting pitcher Chadwick Cameron went the distance to earn the win, while Kris Fielding ignited the offence with a home run. Buoyed by Sean Sutton’s four hits and three from Russell McGibbon, the Reds took the first game 6-4 Saturday. Mitch Sutton tossed six innings and allowed just two earned runs for the win, while Eric Wakeman recorded the save. Erindale evened the series with a 4-1 win in the second game later that day. Jacob Hillier collected three hits for Thornhill. Josh Appel took the loss. — Michael Hayakawa

The Markham Royals added what they felt were the final two pieces to the puzzle before embarking on the 2016-17 Ontario Junior Hockey League regular season by acquiring defenceman Josh Hardiman, 20, and forward Brett Ouderkirk, 19, from the Kingston Voyageurs Friday. In exchange, the Royals were to give cash and future compensation for the pair. A towering six-foot, four-inch, 215-pound Montreal native who had eight goals and 20 assists in 47 regular season contests last season with Kingston, Hardiman was a presence when they eliminated Markham in the second round of the postseason. When it became known he was available, Royals’ general manager and head coach Mike Galati jumped on the opportunity to obtain him. With Hardiman on their roster, Galati projected him to be a top one or two defenceman this season. “He’s intimidating, he’s six-foot, four, he can play, skate and shoot the puck and he was a big part of Kingston’s success last year,” cited Galati. Ouderkirk was acquired by Kingston during the offseason after playing last season in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League where he began the year with the Iroquois Falls Eskis and had 12 goals and 21 assists in 25 games before being dealt to the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners and had nine goals and 19 assists in 30 contests. In acquiring the six-foot, 178-lb. Ouderkirk, Galati said they were looking for a right-handed shooting forward with size. Ouderkirk was also with a Kirkland Lake club last season that went to the Dudley Hewitt Cup. Galati also projected him to be a top six forward for their club. — Michael Hayakawa

York teen exploring brave new world of writing

BY ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS

amartinrobbins@yrmg.com

Alessia Dickson may well have been destined to become a writer — she shares a birthday with William Shakespeare, after all. But it’s her love of the written word that is driving the 17-year-old Emily Carr Secondary School student to become a literacy advocate. A voracious reader and avid writer since she was about six, Dickson recently selfpublished her first novel, The Crystal Chronicles, a 336-page fantasy book geared toward young adults.

Alessia Dickson, 17, has written and published a young adult novel. She is touring local schools to promote literacy.

46 The Markham Economist & Sun | Thursday, September 15, 2016 |

It’s about 16-year-old Alyssa Brooks who discovers she possesses magical powers and belongs to a supernatural race called Elementals, Dickson explained. “As Alyssa is thrust into this new world, she decides to set off around the world to collect four magical crystals,” she said. “These four crystals are needed to create a weapon to destroy the antagonist of the story. They are The Society and they’re basically this evil organization that wants to destroy humanity.” Since her book came out in February, Dickson has been working to ignite a pas-

sion for reading and writing among local youth. “I started going to schools because I really wanted to promote literacy and inspire other kids to read and write,” she said. “I feel like I have a lot to teach people about writing and reading, especially younger kids.” To date, Dickson has delivered presentations at St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Elementary School in Vaughan as well as a Holy Spirit Catholic Elementary School in Brampton. She plans on returning to those schools again this year and hopes to visit others throughout the area as well. “I don’t have any formal training, so I learned to create structures from reading other authors,” Dickson said. “They taught me how to write, that’s why I think everyone should read as much as they can.” Dickson shares her own backstory then moves into the writing process, publishing and her website. She usually wraps up by reading an excerpt from her book. “The kids really like me because I’m closer to their age … so I get a really good response,” Dickson said. “I’ve had a few kids send me pieces of their own books that they decided to write afterwards, … which is so cool.” Dickson said the most challenging part

of writing her book was that she started it when she was 10. “As I got older and older my ideas and my writing matured, so I constantly had to go back and re-write to make sure it sounded fluid,” she said. The Crystal Chronicles is the first in a five-book series. Dickson plans to put out a new novel every one and a half years. Her father, John Dickson, isn’t at all surprised by what she’s doing. “She’s been writing short stories since she was in Grade 1, she’s got piles of them that she’s kept,” he said. “She started this one (Crystal Chronicles) at 10 years old. After I read it, I said, ‘I’ll publish this myself, because I gotta get it out there.’” He’s been watching her present and called it an amazing experience. “It’s so great to see the excitement on the kids’ faces,” he said. Alessia, who tries to write for at least an hour and a half every day and read two books a week, offers this advice to budding authors: “I would start as young as you can and just don’t stop. Even if you don’t feel like writing, just keep writing — just do it and don’t stop.” Crystal Chronicles can be purchased through online booksellers or her website.

Alex Campbell survived war experience BY TIM KELLY

ing City’s Alex Campbell was just 20, scared, and minutes from certain death as the night wind blasted his face at the lip of the burning warplane. The Lancaster pilot, on his 24th and final mission over Nazi-held France on July 28, 1944, made sure the rest of his crew parachuted out of the bullet-riddled aircraft. Now it was his turn – if he could make it. But Campbell was stuck, the plane’s emergency hatch door on top of him. Then, he saw his life flash before his eyes: the smell of bacon-and-eggs at the kitchen table at his boyhood farm on Keele Street in King City, the sight of spruce trees on that farm and a burst of anger took over. Campbell decided he wanted to live and shoved the hatch off. As he stood in the doorway, he felt the howling wind and knew time was short as the plane fell to earth. He was trained to count to 10 before pulling the cord, but didn’t have time. He went to pull and found the ripcord, then headed straight down, the wind blowing his boots off and he sat up. He came so close to the ground the impact

King City’s Alex Campbell survived neardeath war experience to live a long life knocked him out. When he came to, Campbell found he had landed in a wheat field and thought to himself, ‘I’m alive and I will live to see my 21st birthday.’ He made his way to the nearest farmhouse and was hidden from the approaching Nazis by a farmer in a stable behind some hay bales. Campbell then travelled 40 kilometres in peasant clothes where he camped

for three weeks in a forest with 150 other downed aviators until Patton’s Army could come through and picked him up to take him to Paris. From there Campbell got back to England and flew home, his incredible war experience over. In 24 missions, Alex Campbell, Lancaster pilot, saw enemy action on every flight. He told his family he was lucky to be alive. He lived another 70 years and died May 4 at 92, a father of four, grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of two, happily married to wife Hazel for more than seven decades. His daughter Wendy is happy to recount stories about her father, especially his curious streak. “Dad was very curious about life, my brothers grew up having bees in the backyard and rabbit pens, there was a never a ‘No’ to anything you wanted to do,” said Wendy about her father, in an interview last month. “He loved Tommy and the Who and would play that over and over. He liked Mitch Miller and Burl Ives. He was never afraid to step into the future, never old. He was never an old fogey, a very intelligent man, a fabulous carpenter, builder, into technology, into computers which my parents got into in

their 80s.” She said her dad started his own business after the war building ladders, worked at de Havilland in Downsview, then at the hardware store in King City for a number of years in 1950s and 1960s before winding up his working life as a teacher at Huron Heights in Newmarket for a number of years. Alex Campbell, for whom there is a street named in King City, was born in the township in 1923, grew up there and lived there for 70 years until moving to Paris, Ont., a few years ago. “He was so blessed,” said Wendy. “His health carried him for 92 years. I was in his room and I slept right beside him. “At dad’s funeral in Paris, as my brother was telling stories, my mom said dad told her only once, but he said when he was in the plane as it was going down and he was alone on it, he felt this hand on his shoulder as he was trying to get out – it was his guardian angel, willing him to live.”
