MARITIME
MARSTAL Marstal is the biggest town on Ærø, and was once the second-largest shipping hub in Denmark – exceeded only by the Danish capital. When you stroll through the town or along the waterfront, you cannot help but notice how maritime history is much in evidence everywhere you look. ENDURING MARITIME TRADITIONS Shipping is still the lifeblood of the town, which is home to Marstal School of Navigation. This institution has been training navigators for the Danish merchant navy for more than 150 years and remains highly relevant to this day. If you would like to dive down into the maritime history of Marstal, we warmly
PSST! DID YOU KNOW ... ... that there is something unusual about the urban planning of Marstal? The town is actually laid out with the waterfront as its centre – and planned without a ruler. That is why all the roads and paths (known as “strings”) run from the main street down to the harbour and the sea.
6 > Ærø Guide 2022
recommend a visit to Marstal Maritime Museum – although “museum” is perhaps an understatement. The place is actually a treasure trove of all things maritime, and the people in the photos are more than anonymous figures. “The lady there on the deck in the big hat was my great-grandmother,” relates the tour guide; and with that, the scene is set ... (turn to page 30 to find out more about the museum).
THRIVING TOWN LIFE AND CHARMING HARBOUR AMBIENCE The main streets in Marstal – Kirkestræde and Kongensgade – are well stocked with shops, hairdressers, cafés and restaurants. The local traders association keeps the seasonal traditions alive, taking care to deck the town with joyous Christmas decorations and scary Halloween figures, for example, and to organise the associated activities. The
month of July is a shoppers’ delight with “By Night” events on Fridays. The town harbour provides a charming setting with winding alleyways and maritime businesses, and, of course, the natural decoration of dinghies and fishing nets. Here you will find a variety of cafés and restaurants, a campsite and a hostel – as well as all kinds of activities for people of all ages. Moreover, the town hosts a variety of annual events including the Ærø Accordion Festival and the local town festival “Grollefesten”.
AROUND MARSTAL Attractions on the outskirts of Marstal include Skipper Park Marstal, a maritime-themed amusement park set to open in summer 2022. And right nearby are the Egehovedskoven woods, a natural attraction that looks good in all kinds of weather. Marstal ends on Eriks Hale, a tongue of land featuring one of the best sandy beaches on Ærø, and the site of 19 of the quaint local beach huts that you may well have heard about already...?
CARSTEN JENSEN’S WE, THE DROWNED The novel We, the drowned (Vi, de druknede) was written by the Danish author Carsten Jensen, born and raised in Marstal. The book tells the story of four generations of seamen, all driven by a longing to explore far horizons, and whose lives of peril have far-reaching consequences for themselves and their families. The book has received international acclaim, and is the reason why people all over the world have a good understanding of what it means to be a “son of Marstal”.

THE FAIRYTALE TOWN OF
ÆRØSKØBING
A FINELY PRESERVED TOWN Ærøskøbing is the best preserved eighteenth century town in Denmark, where some parts are actually more than 750 years old. Thanks to the total preservation orders that apply to many of the houses in the town and an ambitious conservation plan, Ærøskøbing stands almost as a dictionary definition of “idyll”, with its cobbled streets, climbing roses and small, well-preserved houses. Travel guides from both Denmark and abroad often refer to it as “the Fairytale Town”. Take a stroll through its streets and admire the colours and details of all the houses – for instance, one of the doors was last painted in the 1700s, when it was treated with a mixture of ox blood and oil. Swing by Ærøskøbing Tourist Information near the harbour and pick up a leaflet detailing a short tour of the town that will take you past many of the distinctive buildings.
8 > Ærø Guide 2022
A THRIVING TOWN In recent years, Ærøskøbing has experienced something of a renaissance and a veritable flood of entrepreneurship. As one example, Torvet (the marketplace),
which was nothing more than a car park and a slowly wilting general store just ten years ago, has now become a thriving meeting point for the town, with cafés offering outdoor service, and blushing
brides skipping up to have their photo taken in front of the old linden tree. In the summer, you can follow the watchman on his evening rounds and feel the breath of history caress your skin. The guided tour of the town, through the streets lined with old houses, provides an excellent impression of life here in ages past, while the twilight really sets the scene in the Fairytale Town.
Every year, the town streets and alleys provide the setting for events such as the Christmas market in Ærøskøbing and Ærø Jazz Festival – turn to pages 21 and 33 for details. AROUND ÆRØSKØBING In the heart of the town you will find a library, a book store and a host of shops selling all kinds of local specialities and
useful items for you and your home. If you pass through the marina, you will come to Vesterstrand, famous for its colourful Ærø beach huts and its wonderful sandy beach with shallow water to swim in. The town also has a hostel, guesthouses and hotels, as well as a variety of charming cafés and restaurants in authentic settings.
A PRIZEWINNING TOWN In 2002, Ærøskøbing was awarded the prestigious Europa Nostra prize for its work to pre serve European cultural heritage. In 2013, the town was also presented with Det Brune Johanneskors, which is a Danish national award introduced by the Danish Nature Agency, the Danish Agency for Cultural Heritage and the VisitDenmark organisation. This prestigious award is given to sights and attractions of national significance, and of the 200 or so Danish sights included, two are on Ærø: Ærøskøbing itself and Voderup Klint.
PSST! DID YOU KNOW ... ... that at Bøssehage, on the outskirts of Ærø, you will find a charming little jetty and beach, known locally as “Skidten”? The unflattering name (it means “the pooh” in English) comes from the fact that this was once the town dump, and the verdant flora on the site today are almost certainly attributable to the fertiliser from the numerous toilet pails that have been emptied here in ages past. Sit down on the bench out by the water and enjoy the view to Lilleø and Ommelshoved.

BEAUTIFUL
SØBY While it is the smallest of the three main towns on Ærø, Søby takes first place when it comes to delightful surroundings. The town is composed of both small, timberframed houses, and more modern new builds – all located around the harbour, which is just a few minutes’ walk from everything in the town. Søby is also surrounded by a great many stretches of beautiful countryside, sights and attrac tions, which are all well worth a visit.
wonderful sandy beach, with a fine jetty and crystal clear water. There is both a playground and a mini-golf course within easy reach, and the area is perfect for families with children. At the highest point of the town – and just a 3-minute walk from the harbour – there is a wonderful church from 1745, and close by stands Søby Mølle (Mill) which is considered to be the town hallmark.
TOWN AND HARBOUR IN UNISON The harbour in Søby is a thriving hub of activity. It is the home port of Ærø’s commercial fishing fleet, the site of the biggest workplace on the island (Søby Shipyard) and home to the island’s only 100% electrically powered ferry, the M/F Ellen. As a natural extension to the harbour, you will find the marina and a
A NEIGHBOUR TO SKJOLDNÆS LIGHTHOUSE AND GOLF COURSE If you drive north through the village of Haven, you will come to one of the most attractive lighthouses in Denmark: Skjoldnæs Lighthouse, which flashes its warning out across the water at night. Built in 1881, the round building is made of Bornholm granite and stands 22
PSST! DID YOU KNOW ... … that the village of Haven (the Garden), which is located 3 km outside Søby, was established when farm owners from Søby were ordered to leave the town by the king, because their farms were located too close to each other? The “lucky ones” were selected by the drawing of lots, and their respective farms were then dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt outside Søby where their animals had previously grazed under a parlour and yard system.

metres tall. From the top of the tower, there is a magnificent view in clear weather, taking in the Baltic Sea, the waters of the Little Belt and the South Funen Archipelago. One of the most beautiful seaside links in Europe has been laid out in the area around the lighthouse, and you can read more about this golf course on page 25. In 2022, you can take part in the Ø-Golf (Island Golf) tournament here. See page 25 for details.
heard, when world-class names from the world of classical music give concerts at the manor. Turn to pages 32 and 36 for details.
IN ARTHUR’S FOOTSTEPS “So who is Arthur?” you may be asking yourself. This particular Arthur is Arthur Jørgensen (1908–1994) who founded Søby Motorfabrik in 1930. The business is still operating today under the name of Søby Værft. With its workforce of around 100, the shipyard is the biggest employer on the island and one of the largest shipyards in Denmark for repairs and boatbuilding. AROUND SØBY Located close to stretches of magnificent countryside, Søby offers plenty of places to spend the night, including Søby Camping with its wonderful sea view. The town also has a well-stocked grocery store and a local baker, and is famous for its strong local dialect. The villages around Søby are home to a variety of small farm shops and great destinations for day trips. For example, hike over Søby Volde (Earthworks) to
Vester Mølle (Mill), make the most of the great fishing spots on Næbbet, or take a walk around Vitsø lake and admire the rich birdlife. Whereas Marstal and Ærøskøbing are known for their beach huts, Jørbæk Strand beach on the edge of Søby has a number of fisherman’s cabins that are still in use today. Every summer, Søby provides the setting for the local art college’s free exhibition. And from May to September, the sweet tones of classical music can be
Around 2,000 engines were built at Arthur’s factory from the mid-1940s to the start of the 1960s. When that era came to a close, Arthur started to construct steel ships on a specially built slipway. The first dry dock was established in 1967 and today the shipyard has three. In 1977, the coaster Pia Arre slid down the slipway, marking the start of a new chapter in the history of the yard. In the period up to 1991, the shipyard built a further 30 coasters, fulfilling the needs of the Danish Marine Civil Defence Force. Søby Værft, Arthur Jørgensen’s dream and life’s work, has built fully 111 new vessels to date. The shipyard also took a large step forward in the ongoing techno logical revolution with the delivery of M/F Ellen – a 100% electrically powered ferry – in 2019. Arthur Jørgensen’s spirit is still alive and well in Søby, and the guided tour entitled “In Arthur’s footsteps” is the perfect way to find out much more about the man himself and the development of Søby. The walk is both entertaining and educa tional. For dates and other details, see visitaeroe.com/events.

VILLAGE LIFE ON ÆRØ Did you know that even the locals can get lost in beautiful Ommel? Or that Bregninge is the second-longest village in Denmark? THE VILLAGES ON ÆRØ ARE IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN In addition to the large towns of Marstal, Ærøskøbing and Søby, the main roads on the island are liberally sprinkled with small villages. Drive through the village streets and soak up the undisturbed idyll. Cows, horses and sheep graze on the fertile fields bordered by dikes and hedges, which surround the small, neatly kept houses and farms. Gardens bur-
sting with flowers and fruit trees line the main street, while the village pond is home to ducks and other local fauna. VILLAGE TREATS Even though you may have decided to stay in one of the larger towns on the island during your holiday, there is every reason to take a drive to one of the small villages nearby. For example, you could visit Ærø Bryggeri (Brewery) in Store Rise or the Tree & Earth Creams workshop in Skovby. You can also go on a shopping expedition to Herremark just outside Søby, or buy delightful soaps from Ærø Soap Company in Bregninge. This is
also where you will find Uldgården, a large farm shop with a difference, selling all kinds of soft garments, shoes, local delicacies and more. Ommel is a village that actually has two separate harbours: Kleven and Strand byen. Cycle Route 92 runs through Kragnæs, which is also home to the lifestyle shop Færgevej46. In Græsvænge, you can visit the Etablis sement shop to buy traditional arts and crafts items, while in Bregninge you can visit Den Bibelske Have (The Biblical Garden). For details of all village sights and attrac tions, see visitaeroe.com/villagelife. THE VILLAGE CHURCHES STILL STAND A common trait of many of the villages on Ærø is that they have their own churches, which are symbols of the small communities that still exist on the island. In fact, Ærø boasts no fewer than seven churches, each with its own distinctive features. Rise Church is the oldest one on the island, with a history stretching back to the 1100s. Bregninge Church is the only roadside church on Ærø and there are guided tours throughout the summer. One peculiar feature of the churches in Rise, Tranderup and Bregninge is their circular graveyards. For the opening hours of all the churches, see page 47.

THE BEAUTIFUL
BEACHES OF ÆRØ THE BEACHES NEAR SØBY Well sheltered in a bay by a delightful little promontory, lies the beach of Søby Strand with its fine sand and jetty. This child-friendly beach is just a stone’s throw from a playground, marina and restaurant. If you set out from Søby on the route known locally as the “Tour de Jørbæk”, you will soon come to Jørbæk Strand, a gem of a sandy beach, bordered by unspoiled countryside where cattle graze. A fine jetty leads to the turquoise water with the sandy seabed below. VESTERSTRAND BEACH NEAR ÆRØSKØBING Vesterstrand beach is located just outside Ærøskøbing, a few minutes’ easy walk from the marina and campsite. This child-friendly beach is known for its jetty and its shallow water. The wonderful sandy beach lines the bay all the way to Urehoved, where you will often find kitesurfers on the water on windy days.
The beach is lined with 71 of the 90 classic beach huts on the island – including the one that graces the cover of this brochure. ERIKS HALE NEAR MARSTAL Eriks Hale (Erik’s Tail) is the name of a tongue of land on the outskirts of Marstal, close to the marina and campsite, bordered by two types of sea. On one side, you can swim in the warm, child-friendly water of Lille Hav (the Little Sea), which is an enclosed, shallow bay between the harbour and the beach, while on the other side, you will find the bracing Baltic Sea, where the waves are sometimes impressive in size. Eriks Hale is also the perfect place for a country ramble, if you follow the land out as far as you can. BREATHTAKING SUNSETS If you are looking for truly breathtaking sunsets along the coast, look no further than Tværbymark or Voderup on the
western side of Ærø. Here, the sea turns to fire on most evenings – or afternoons, if you visit us in the cooler months. TAKE A DIP WITH THE LOCALS Ærø is known for its year-round bathing. The Ærø Winter Swimmers make their way into the water from the BP Building at Ærøskøbing Harbour at 8 o’clock in the morning every day in the period September to May. You are more than welcome to join them. GO EXPLORING IN THE WORLD OF BEACH HERBS In both Ærøskøbing and Marstal, you can take part in guided tours to find and pick edible plants from the beach: • Eriks Hale: Local guide Knud Nielsen leads the hunt for schnapps herbs and edible plants. • Vesterstrand: Nature guide and gath erer Nils Ørum shows the way and shares tips about picking and preparation. For details of where to meet and when, see visitaeroe.com/events.
DID YOU KNOW ... ... that Risemark Strand is actually a naturist beach? The beach was officially opened in 2014 and is a firm favourite with naturist associations.

THE BEACH HUTS
ON ÆRØ
The beach huts are possibly the most Ærø-ish thing you will find on the island. In many ways, they are the hallmark of Ærø, and they hold a deep significance for both residents and guests. Their history can be traced back to 1920, when the first houses started to appear. There were big differences between the early constructions. Some were simply sheds, where there was just enough room to change clothes, while others resembled little holiday houses.
Today, there are no fewer than 90 small beach huts on the island: 19 on Eriks Hale in Marstal, and 71 on Vesterstrand beach in Ærøskøbing. They are in almost constant use in the summer, where they form the backdrop for many people’s fond memories of sunny days on Ærø. Marstal is home to perhaps the most frequently photographed beach hut on our island – the little red one with the thatched roof – while in Ærøskøbing you
will find the hut that graces the cover of this year’s brochure. To read the full history of the beach huts on the island, see visitaeroe.com/huts. In the summer, you can also go on a guided tour of the beach huts on Vesterstrand beach, while outside the peak season, you can book the tour for yourself from Ærø Tours through their website at aeroetours.dk.

SPRING ARRIVES EARLY – AND SUDDENLY The green shoots of spring appear earlier on Ærø than on the mainland. The island awakes with a start from its winter hibernation in the early months of spring, and the bushes and trees burst into bloom in a veritable symphony of colour. Every year, the rapeseed fields add their dash of bright yellow colour to large parts of the island, while poppies open up in big and small clusters in the fields and roadside culverts. Make sure to stop and enjoy the colours, the scents and the warm winds, because the blossoming time is as short and intense as it is beautiful. Shops, cafés and restaurants that were closed in the winter open for the new season, the birds twitter in the trees and the queues at the ice cream stalls are still manageable. Spring on Ærø is almost synonymous with weekend breaks and Easter holidays. To find out more, see visitaeroe.com/spring.
SUMMER HOLIDAYS ON ÆRØ CREATE MEMORIES TO LAST A LIFETIME The beaches ring with laughter and joy and the water can sometimes look as emerald green as on a postcard from Hawaii. The atmosphere is relaxed and even with the large number of summer guests, you can always find a quiet spot to lay back and relax. We’re not sure if it’s the children’s crab races and the long days on the beach that do it. Or perhaps the local summer festivals, the charming pedestrian streets and the summer concerts. It could also be the sunsets, the peace, quiet and to ge therness, or the evening strolls through the Ærø countryside. What we do know is that summer holidays on Ærø create memories that last a lifetime and cry out to be repeated. For additional information, see: visitaeroe.com/summer.
JOMFRUSTIEN IN ÆRØSKØBING CHANGEABLE AUTUMN As September progresses, the pace of life gradually slows on Ærø. This is the time when you can sometimes have the whole beach to yourself, while on the streets you may meet only a cat and a couple of passing locals, who will greet you with a cheery “Go’daw!” Autumn on Ærø can be rough and rugged with its tall waves and tree-shaking storms, but it can just as easily be mild and gentle with its soft winds and colourful sunsets. The countryside colours change to warm, enveloping tones, and the air feels fresher than ever – if that were possible. This is the season for art and culture, introspection, tasty meals, coffee and cake. And quality time with the people you love. To find out more, see: visitaeroe.com/autumn.
JØRBÆK STRAND IN SØBY WINTER ON ÆRØ IS THE SEASON FOR REFLECTION The warm sea around the island means that winter comes later to Ærø than to mainland Denmark. Winter on Ærø is the season for reflection and even with out snow and ice, the island provides the sweetest backdrop for your winter holiday. This is the place to step back from your sometimes hectic everyday life and allow yourself to slip into the warm embrace of island life, comfort and togetherness. There are no pressing deadlines here. Relax your shoulders and breathe deeply.
And before you say that this is something you can do everywhere, we dare to claim that it’s a little different on an island. It has something to do with the ferry. As you sail across the water, you can already feel the stress and pressure start slipping away. Spend the winter on Ærø taking time for yourself. Go for a walk in the countryside, treat yourself to a massage or a dip in a hot tub with a view of the sea; enjoy the quiet and a couple of hours’ fishing. Ærø has it all. TAP INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT ON ÆRØ 20 > Ærø Guide 2022
The Christmas season on Ærø is some thing special. It finds expression in a fes tively decorated tree glimpsed through frost-encrusted windows. Or the scent of freshly baked Danish Christmas treats as they come out of the oven. Ruddy cheeked pedestrians hurrying along the cobbled streets, wrapped up warmly in scarves and mittens and passing on their good humour. For many Danes, Christmas is the con cept of “hygge” come to life, and nowhere is this more evident than on Ærø. Experience the joyous mood at the numerous Christmas markets, or bask in the warmth from the brightly lit windows. The shops present all kinds of great ideas

It is a beautifully kept 18-hole seaside course, the like of which you would otherwise have to travel to Scotland or Ireland to experience. The view is unparalleled, especially in the summer, when you can see a flurry of sailing ships on the waters of the Baltic Sea and the South Funen Archipelago, making their way around Skjoldnæs Lighthouse.

THE MUSEUMS
OF ÆRØ
ÆRØ MUSEUM Ærø Museum’s cultural and historical exhibition entitled “Ærø – our island” is devoted to narratives and artefacts representing centuries of life on Ærø. The exhibition takes you on a journey back through time: from present day life on the island to the rural society of ages past. As the journey unfolds, you encounter a number of key topics in the history of the island, from the wedding tourism of modern times, to Ærø as a part of the Duchy of Schleswig before the defeat at Dybbøl in 1864. The exhibition reveals why the people of Ærø head for the beach to boil eggs on Easter Saturday. It also tells the story behind the island’s two local flags. A visit to the museum garden (in its 1920 form) provides a fine impression of a greener, more fertile Ærøskøbing, which is otherwise hidden away from the world in the closed courtyards of the town.

The exhibition has received warm praise from visitors on account of its wonderful stories and its atmosphere. HAMMERICH'S HUS On the corner of Brogade and Gyden, you can visit the red house that is one of the best-preserved eighteenth century timber-framed houses in Ærøskøbing. The building has also retained its original interior, with narrow staircases and an old fireplace. The house was filled with life and laughter after it was purchased by sculptor Gunnar Hammerich (1893– 1977) who furnished it with an impressive collection of antiquities, including 3,000 Dutch tiles, Kellinghusen faience and other household utensils from the South Funen Archipelago and Southern Jutland in the period 1600– 1800. Hammerich's Hus is a monument to the development of Ærøskøbing over the course of the twentieth century.
HAMMERICHS HUS SØBYGAARD Søbygaard Manor is a testament to Ærø’s noble history: the island was actually a part of the Duchy of Southern Jutland until 1867. The farm was originally built by Duke Hans the Younger (1545–1622) as a part of a huge estate complex. The main building and the more recent farm build ings are seated on two artificial islands,

clad in impressive stonework. Søbygaard stands next to a mediaeval embankment built in the twelfth century, from the top of which there is a magnificent view out over Vitsø Lake and the island of Als. During the summer, the manor hosts a variety of activities for children and adults alike through the Kys Frøen (Kiss the Frog) centre. For details, see page 16-17.

Exhibitions and concerts The main building and the barn host changing special exhibitions in the summer months. The concert hall is decorated with works by the celebrated artist Sven Havsteen Mikkelsen; they are actually the designs for glass mosaics that now adorn a number of Nordic churches. Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen lived the last 25 years of his life in Øster
Bregningemark, which is not far from Søbygaard. During the summer, the hall is the venue for concerts of classical music performed by musicians from Denmark and abroad. For a full list, see visitaeroe.com/events. MARSTAL MARITIME MUSEUM Marstal Maritime Museum is the place to go for a good helping of nautical fun and adventure! Here, you can experience what it is like to sail on an authentic yacht, climb to the top of a ship’s mast, or
MARSTAL MARITIME MUSEUM recline in the saloon on a steam-powered ferry. The museum has more than 300 model ships as well as a wealth of remarkable artefacts brought home by sailors from their travels on the seven seas – a shrunken head, for example, which is also mentioned in Carsten Jensen’s bestselling novel Vi, de druknede (We, the drowned). There is also a comprehensive collection of works by J. E. C. Rasmussen, famed for his paintings of seascapes and Greenland. The museum organises fun activities for children in the school holidays (see page 16).
Eriksens Plads Eriksens Plads (Square) is something of seedbed for wooden shipbuilding, and here you will find a partially constructed schooner that stands as a sculptural symbol of the comprehensive shipyard activity that has dominated the town. The boat-builder’s hall is open when the doors are open, and the motor shed is open when the motor is running. The whole area is a delightful little oasis with a barbecue site, benches and tables. DET GAMLE VÆRFT Det Gamle Værft (The Old Shipyard) comprises living workshops, where both children and adults can experience the
THE OLD SHIPYARD
history of seafaring right up close and get their hands dirty, too (for details, see page 17). The focus here is on the processes used to build the old, riveted iron and steel ships, an intricate craft that was common more than a century ago. Out behind the slipway, for instance, you will find the riveted steel ferry M/S Angelo formerly the S/S Svendborgsund from 1907, which once sailed the Marstal– Rudkøbing–Strynø route laden with passengers and cargo. Both the experiences
and the exhibitions at Det Gamle Værft are constantly changing and developing, and a variety of restoration tasks are under way. WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT THE MUSEUMS OF ÆRØ? Fully 19 professional artists, five art students and 25 college course participants will be given free rein to create eco- friendly art by using only recycled materials found or acquired on Ærø. To support the initiative, the college of art has entered into local agreements for the free use of items from Ærø’s recycling station and rubbish tip. The exhibition has been arranged with a view to highlighting recycling, upcycling and carbon neutrality. At the end of the exhibition period, the works will be dismantled and sorted, and all items used will be returned to the recycling station. 36 > Ærø Guide 2022

ÆRØ’S PAST AND HISTORY
PASSAGE GRAVE AT LINDSBJERG STONE AGE You will find fascinating traces of ancient times in many places on Ærø. Giant bur ial mounds, galley graves and dolmens testify to the presence of our forefathers over a period measured in thousands of years. For example, next to Rise Church stands a large Stone Age dolmen in the shape of a ship, while Lindsbjerg and Kragnæs are the site of well-preserved galley graves.
THE VIKING AGE Until just a few years ago, the Viking Age was an almost unexplored chapter in the history of Ærø, but the discovery of an ancient trading post at Havsmarken on the south-east coast of the island has shed new light on this period. The dis covery clearly positions Ærø as a key point on the most important trad ing route in the world at that time. In 2021, archaeologists from Langeland Museum began another excavation in
Havsmarken, where finds indicate that shipbuilding was already an industry on Ærø in Viking times. At Vejsnæs Nakke, you can still see t races of St. Albert’s Church. The re-created installation consists of a 3-metre-deep trench and a sturdy earthwork emplace ment which has been dated to the Viking Age, around 1000 AD. The location took on a new function in the 1300s, when a church was built on the site. Around 50 graves have been unearthed in the immediate vicinity of the church, including a great many children’s graves. MORE RECENT HISTORY From the fourteenth century to 1864, Ærø was variously united and divided into a series of enclaves under German duchy rule. Ærø was positioned outside the toll limits of the Danish realm, which created a fertile basis for a smuggling industry that was actually the way of life for a large number of Ærø residents. Ærø was unified as a single administrative unit in 1750, and a memorial stone at Olde Mølle mill marks the unification.

GEOPARK
– THE SOUTH FUNEN ARCHIPELAGO Ærø is a part of a flooded ice age land scape that is in a class of its own. The most recent ice age ended around 11,700 years ago, when Denmark was joined with South England and South Sweden, and when what are now the island of Funen and the South Funen Archipelago formed a single, continuous stretch of countryside featuring hills, forests and lakes. As the last giant ice caps over North America and Northern Scandinavia melted, sea levels rose all over the world. The low-lying land south of Funen was flooded, while the higher points in the landscape remained above water, becoming the 55 islands and islets we know today. Thus was formed the South Funen Archipelago. The unique seascape of shallows, innumerable small islands and a varied coastline is truly special and, to this day, provides perfect conditions for a thriving community, shipping industry and agriculture on South Funen and the islands. THREE FASCINATING NATURE AREAS ON ÆRØ Eriks Hale is the name of Marstal’s beautiful beach, and it is one of three tongues of land on the island. The special feature of these narrow stretches of land is how
VODERUP KLINT close the sea is on all sides. Stand here and experience the sense of bestriding a landscape that has drowned. Voderup Klint is an absolute “must see” and one of the finest vantage points on Ærø. Giant steps in the landscape lead all the way down to the beach and the magnificent area is well-known for its rich variety of flora and fauna. The whole of Voderup is an internationally protected nature area. Næbbet is one of the most important
and fascinating areas of Ærø for every one interested in birds and plants. The area between Skjoldnæs Lighthouse and Næbbet is also a firm favourite with anglers on account of the shallow water and the strong current. GUIDED TOURS You can take part in guided tours of Ærø’s wonderful countryside all year round. See all the options at: visitaeroe.com/events.

THE MARINAS ON ÆRØ
ÆRØSKØBING MARINA
“The way to get to a real island is to sail there!” And this is what you have every opportunity to do when it comes to Ærø. In addition to our five regular ferries, we have fully four marinas, each with its own individual charm. The three large ones are located in Marstal, Ærøskøbing and Søby, while the fourth – smaller and wonderfully charming – one is in Ommel. MARSTAL MARINA The biggest marina on the island is in Marstal. It was named Harbour of the Year by the Dansk Tursejlere (Danish Tour Sailors) association in 2019. The marina has a full range of facilities, including a playground, charming barbecue shelters and good toilet/ bathroom facilities. It is also within easy
HARBOUR FEES On Ærø, we like to welcome our guests in person. This means there are no payment machines in our marinas. Instead, we ask you to pay our harbour fee collector who visits all the jetties every morning and evening. You can pay cash (DKK and EUR) as well as with Danish and international credit cards.

walking distance of the town, where there are plenty of shops, restaurants and ice cream booths. The view from the marina isn’t bad either. The picture here shows the view out over Eriks Hale – a delightful beach lined with beach houses in all colours. You can read more about Marstal on pages 6-7. ÆRØSKØBING MARINA At Ærøskøbing Harbour, you will find a well-equipped marina with attractions including a playground, barbecue area and mini-golf course. It is also within easy walking dis tance of the popular Vesterstrand beach with its iconic beach houses. There are good shopping op tions nearby, too. Right next to the marina is a large discount supermarket, and if you continue on into town, you can visit Ærøskøbing Bageri (Bakery) that sells a wide range of tasty Danish bread and cakes. You can read more about Ærøskøbing on pages 8-9. SØBY MARINA Privately owned Søby Marina is a charm ing and well-run marina. The harbour presents a range of facilities and attractions including a playground with a barbecue area, picnic benches and a cookhouse, making it easy to prepare the evening meal while your children play
nearby. Within easy walking distance, there is a Dagli’ Brugsen supermarket selling a wide range of food and other items, as well as Finn’s Bageri & Café, which sells Danish bread and cakes at their impressive best. In fact, many of the local islanders are happy to drive to Søby purely to enjoy treats from Finn’s bakery for their breakfast or with their afternoon coffee. Søby Havn is a fishing and industrial harbour centred around Søby Shipyard. This means you can often see large coasters and fishing vessels making their way into the harbour. You can read more about Søby on pages 10-11. KLEVEN HARBOUR On the north-east coast of Ærø, near the village of Ommel, lies Kleven Havn, a charming little harbour run by Kleven Bådelaug, the local boating lodge. The harbour has retained its authentic atmosphere and maritime ambience, and serves as an excellent alternative to the larger marinas. Facilities close to the harbour include a small toilet building and a primitive campsite. In addition, some keen local residents have set up an outdoor hot tub with a wonderful view out over the harbour – perfect for keeping warm on cool evenings. The nearest shops are in Marstal, approx. 3 km from the harbour.
BROWN BARS AND TOWN LIFE ON ÆRØ On Ærø, you have every opportunity to go out for a beer or two all year round. This is because you will find an inn or an authentic "brown" bar in almost every town and village on the island. A POINT OF REFERENCE IN A SMALL COMMUNITY In the same way as in many other small communities, the inns and brown bars play a special role on Ærø. This is because Ærø is a seafaring society, and the inns and bars serve as points of reference for many of the seamen when they return home from their latest trips and voyages – this is a place where people look out for and take care of each other.
From as early as 10 o’clock in the morn ing, you can meet the first regulars in the local brown bar. This is where people come to exchange tall tales, share experience and put the world to rights until deep into the afternoon. Almost all inns and bars on the island have a dart board and/or a billiard table, and it is not unusual for the locals to hold a little billiards tournament on a Friday afternoon. WHEN THE YOUNG PEOPLE HIT THE TOWN After around 8 o’clock in the evening, the average age of the regulars drops sharply, the juke box plays a little louder,
and the ambience changes to coloured lights and fancy drinks. It’s time for the young people to hit the town! The biggest dance floor is to be found at the Miss Sophy discotheque in Marstal, but you can usually find space to show off your moves to the music at many of the smaller establishments on the island as well. Moreover, Landbogaarden in Ærøskøbing organises great dance parties all year round. As a new addition to the island nightlife, Ærø now has two cocktail bars: Ballast Bar Butik in Marstal and Ærø Guesthouse & Café in Ærøskøbing. For an overview, see page 48.

Ærøskøbing Røgeri is a seafood restaurant in unpretentious settings – open every day of the week from April to October. Here you may enjoy a quick lunch – a light evening meal – or, during the peak season, order steamed salmon with a salad, baguette and no-fry fries with hollandaise – or with potatoes au gratin. All smoked fish menues are served with bread and butter, a green salad, potato salad or with no-fry fries. For this, draft beer, wine, water or 100% Funen apple juice are served. Every day of the week we also serve coffee, cappuccino, café latte, hot chocolate – or even SKARØ ice cream. No-fry zone Ærøskøbing Røgeri serve fish fillet and French fries without deep fry. We therefore call it a no-fry zone – oven-baked double fish fillet or warm fish cake with French fries and remoulade ready in no time. Take-away You may also choose take-away smoked fish any day of the week - even vacuumpacked. All menus may be packed for takeaway – with 100%-compostable cutlery – this will make you ready for a trip into Ærø’s nature – or for your homebound ferry crossing.
