C.H.S.'S Max Maroon Yesterday, Today, And .. .Forever • 1

You ee him everyday, all around you on T·shirts, buttons, the Chronicle, the Yearbook and at sporting events. This is the 30th year Max Maroon has symbolized Central High School spirit. In the year to come the long line of stu· dent will keep the spirit of Max 2 alive. •

!History! In 1955 a group of students, known a the "Peparoons" were one of the many groups to en· hance school spirit here at Cham· paign Central High. One of the ideas to promote their school cheers was Max Maroon. The original Max Maroon was a fuzzy white head with a maroon bow, worn by Pat Kortkamp during the football sea on and E ther Bundy during the basketball season. Through the years Max Maroon has gone under many different changes. His head was replaced by a maroon paper mache of a bear, and he switched from being a pe· paroon to being a rna cot. Thirty year later Max is still going strong. 1. The original Max Maroon. 2. Max poses in from of Maroon para·

((Pain'' Is Emphasized In '86 Season

., This year the team has increased in talent with the addition of two members. A freshman, Will Lane, i very talented in the backstroke and distance events. The other member i Spencer Atkins who moved to Champaign from Monticello. Spencer, a junior excell at the butterfly and the I.M. With the addition of these two members the medly relay became tate material. To help swimmers improve, coach Trigger had the team concentrate on trying to break the pain barrier. The team did this and uccessfully improved. During the course of the season, Bloomington lost three of their members in a car accident. Aside from that, Central knew that they still had to work hard to beat thi highly ranked team. Ban Roger ga ps for air while swimming the breast¡ troke. 2. Coach Schooley said that next year they will all be a year older and that if they don't work harder over the summer, they won't get any better. The biggest disadvantage foe the team was the passing done by the gicls. A New Era In C.H.S. Basketball

A new era in C.H.S. basketball began when Me. Ccoy took over Me. Cabutti's head coaching position. To start out his first season as head coach of the maroon cagers, Coach Ccoy' team defeated Kankakee, their first home game win. Before the season started, Coach Croy was looking forward to having returning lettermen; Scott Cieniawski, Mark Daniel, and Scott Shoop to lead the team to another winning season. There is a great deal of discipline on the team this year. Since Coach Croy took over the head coaching spot, everyone will discipline themselves on and off the court. On the court, the players must keep up their potential and awareness. Off the court, the players have to maintain an average grade point and stay out of trouble with both the teachers and the public.

Sophomores, Who are they????

According to Webster' dictionary a ophornore can be tran lated a a wise fool. " opho" mean wi e and "moros" mean fool. At entral High chool ophomores are ometimes wi e but rarely fooli h. They realize they have two more year before graduation and mu t pa s a number of required ubject before the "carefree" day of the enior year. There is nothing ignificant about being a ophomore thi year except building the fir t place Homecoming float and pa sing the driver' test on the first try. Maybe being a ophomore isn't o bad. After all, it only la t one year.

ith only a year left the Junior class plans to make the most of it. Many will start looking at colleges and planning their future. Others will put it off till next year, while some will maintain their steady grades and take care of things one day at a time. Around the corner creeps the ACT assesment test, as well as the SAT. The thought of owning a car comes to mind also, with insurance premiums lurking around. But what about the class itself? "I feel that we have matured quite a bit," said class President Brock Petrie, "we're one of the most liveliest classes." What does the future hold for these people? Wait till next year. President: Brock Petrie V-Pre : Tracy Jackson

Secretary: Kelly Alexis Treasurer: Jon Turner

The Purple People Eater It's pretty amazing the Junior class managed to get second place in this years Homecoming float competition. Considering their money situation and the availability of a flatbed only a few days before the judging on Oct. 4th, they pulled off an impressive victory over the freshman who received third place. "Although it was hard getting things organized, everything tarted going great. It took three night to build the Purple People Eater." commented Brock Petrie. The last night took the class of '87 till twelve midnight. During the final night the Junior float was bombarded by a variety of object , mo tly eggs. Fearing that their float would be attacked in the middle of the night a caravan of eight cars moved the float to Kerrith Zaccarias till the next morning. Here the Junior class give the, "We're number one" look li tening to the song, "The Flying Purple People Eater"

Seniors.

The old saying "High school days come only once, enjoy them while you can." Is true. Senior year is the topping of four of the best years of your life. In the past year you have grown and learned so much, you have met new friends and experienced many things that will help you in your later life. It's hard to think of leaving High chool for college. orne people will never see their high chool friends again, but they will always remember the laughs and the good times high school has given them.

At the ~incr Pep assembly the \Cnior class "as triumphant. The under· dassmen and the faculrv were no march for their hrure strength and luck . Sen1ors hlcw a"ay the u.ndcrclas\mcn, c•en the faculties secret weapon, Mr. Garcias b•g sisu:r Bertha was no march.

In Memory Of Charles L. Due

Charlie Due taught and coached at Champaign Central High School for twenty nine years. During those years he devoted himself to his students both on and off the playing field. He was well known by all who attended Central. Mr. Due died on September 13, 1985. His death occured in Decatur immediately following a football game which he was officiating. The community as well as the faculty and students were stunned. Charlie will always be remembered for his friendly manner, cheerful spirit, and deep concern for the needs of others. R. Wooley

Max Maroon represents Central's school sp1nt, whether we win or lose, and in our triumphs and failures. He is adorned on tshirts and buttons. But somewhere throughout his thirty years of faithfulness, the true spirit of Max has been lost. It is our goal as the Year book staff to remind and to challenge the student body to remember the true symbolic meaning of Max Maroon - "My school right or wrong - win or lo e."
