UMM As another school year ended for the 1985-86 season and summertime began, people started getting ready for the fun and excitement of summer. Some people took vacations, had parties, earned money, went swimming, stayed up late, fell in love, got in trouble, or created trouble. All in all, it was just a routine summer with its ultimate ending ... school. High school is one of the many special times in peoples' lives. During those few years there are many events that will stay with them forever , like homecoming, teachers, parties, friends, grades, and the prom. One of the last things that they experience is graduation. Last year 269 seniors graduated from Central at the great Hall in Krannert 's Center for the Performing Arts. The valedictorians were Sabina Alkire, James Green , Kathleen Davisson, Noel Ostenburg, and Krista Van Vorst. And with these few the memory of another group of unforgettable seniors is left behind.

The grand affair held at Warden Martin, was decorated in sparkly silver tinsel. It was a vibrant evening, a night to remember by all. The fun continued at Post Prom, which was held at Western Bowl, where dancing, bowling, and pool were the main events. The Unit Four teachers ' strike had a powerful impact on everyone it touched . For thirteen days students were kept out of classes and athletes were unable to practice. After students were treated to thirteen extra days of summer, the strike was settled, but not without consequences. Because athletes were unable to practice during the strike, the fall sports teams had to forfeit games. The sport that felt the most impact was football. The Varsity Maroons could possibly have had an undefeated season but ended up having three losses due to forfeit. The consequences school-wise hit harder. The board had to cut

There are four students here at Central this year who are participating in youth exchange program. These students are from foreign countries and are living here in America for a year to experience life in another country. In order to be a part of this special program, each student had to go through series of tests, interviews, and applications. CENTRAL HAS FLARE FOR THE GAME

"The future of Central Baseball looks very very bright."

A flare for the game? That's right. Last year's Central baseball squad was a very enthusiastic bunch with talent shining from everyone. Last year, also marked coach John Linstrom's first year as head coach. He directed the Maroons to an 11-10 overall record and finished second in conference, after being picked to finish last. But that's not all; Central had five players who earned some kind of All Conference Honors and four of them are returning. They are Mark Ohrenstine, Byron Smith, Andy Schuster, and Antony Williams. Central also had a flare for the game because of the enthusiastic bunch of Seniors they had. (Jim Alexander, Matt Deering, Todd Linehart, Randy Burh, Scott Shoop). But the one who stood out most was Randy "MO" Burh. Mo put a little class in the Central team with his aerobic catches, head-first slides, and a tremendously weak arm. Mo was a true Central player, always giving his body to the game, and the fans and players loved it. Central baseball will miss Mo but the future of Central looks very bright. So, hopefully, again Central will have a flare for the game next year.

A DIM YEAR FOR SOFTBALL The 1986 Girls softball Team had only two players returning with any experience . The team was made up primarily of Freshmen and Sophomores. There was no experienced pitcher. All of these points add up to a building year. The team was not able to win a game all season . Many of the players will be returning next season; in fact the team will only lose two players. With the experience of a season the team sould do well next year . The two standouts on the team were Missy Morton , a senior, and junior Marci Maier. Marci won the most valuable player award and led the team with a batting average of .409. Missy was the team captain , the team pitcher, and she batted .383. Other letter winners included J . ExPlosive Season for Netters

''This season was to be a rebuilding year but behind PLUG, and with a Little teamwork and determination we returned to state form.' ' - Senior Marshal Schact After the loss of four varsity lettermen to graduation in 1985, most tennis prognosticators forecasted 1986 to be a rebuilding year for the Champaign Central netters. Someone forgot to tell this to the Maroons and head coach Dennis Sparks. After a rigorous preseason strength and agility program devised by taskmaster and tennis guru, Dennis Sparks, the varsity netters proceeded to compile an impressive 17 and 3 duel meet record. The Maroons were especially imposing at home where they regularly entertained vociferous and sometimes hostile throngs of spectators. The varsity netters continued their winning ways in post-season play. At the sectional meet the Maroons not only secured the team title , but departing senior Scott Casey also seized the singles title by defeating St. Joe-Ogden bound teammate John Wright in the finals , while Scott Fosler and Adam Le Grande procured the doubles title . The Maroons then capped their season with a top-twenty finish at the state tournament. If one word could be used to describe the 1986 tennis season it would be " teammanship ." Whether playing in front of the multitudes of fans at a home meet, deep in thought at a pre-match prayer sesson , or sitting like sardines in the Unit Four truckster the Maroons stuck together.

CHEERLEADERS KEEP Cheerleading has been a long standing tradition here at Central High School. Cheerleaders evoke school spirit from the fans at games, and provide support for our athletes. Though these are important aspects of a cheerleader's responsibilities they accomplish much more throughout the year! The cheerleaders have many fundraisers that not only raise money, but are fun for the people who participate. Some of these services are: car washes, bake sales, and flower sales. As you can see, the 1986-87 Varsity Cheerleaders do more than just carry on traditions; they set them! VARSITY SPARKLES 0-3 and you haven 't even played a game yet. You have to win 6 straight games to go to the State Playoffs. Can you do it? Well , Central sure d1d . After forfeiting 3 straight games, probably the finest victory of all came over Urbana in a 7-0 win . Central gained the title of Conference Champs with this victory . So now it was Bloomington . In order to go to the State Playoffs Central had to win . They did, of course , winning 24-7 . Central now had to focus on Peoria Woodruff for the playoff game. Wednesday night arrived and Central was prepared as best they could be . Unfortunately Central lost 39-20. They played a good game but were just outmatched Give Central credit though; they did what no one thought they could do. Central ended up 6-4 and nine members earned All Conference Honors. They were : Marshall Schatt, Darrell Boysaw , Jeff Shanholtzer, Wilford Seward , Jon Tresslar, Anthony Williams, Drew Livingston, Bubba Clemons , and Alex Rodgers . SOPHOMORES SHINE Coach Schuster said at the Central football banquet that he wasn 't too excited about the season this year, but after a couple weeks he said that he started to "feel " that feeling again. And for good reason too. The Sophomores showed their stuff when they took to the field eliminating every team that got in their way , including an unbeaten , rather large, Bloomington team . The offense , who had no passing in the beginning , but an awesome running game, showed what practice does for you by dominating Centennial with a passing attack that was " surprisingly pleasing " to Coach Schuster. Next year holds true promise for Central Varsity with these Sophomores coming up.

Golf Team Has Briaht SPots

The 1986 Central golf team had an unpredictable season . Coach Fred Schooley would never know what to expect from his team . The team would play well in one meet, and the next day they would play like they had just taken up the game. Central had a winning season , but it seemed that the team was flat . The golfers didn 't reach their potential. The team finished second in the district meet, which qualified the team for sectionals. Central played poorly and finished seventh in sectionals . The season was highlighted by some individual performances. Scott Grumish, a sophomore, won the Big 12 golf meet with a 77. Senior Charlie Younger shot a 77 to qualify Central for the sectional meet. NETTERS SHINE AT CHS How many victories is a thermos full of water worth? According to News-Gazzette sportswriter Fred Kroner and Girls Tennis Coach Dennis Sparks, about fourteen . Does this mean they believe two thermoses are worth twenty-eight wins? Sparks, thinking his girls were not being aggressive enough on the court, decided the wet look might do them some good, and threatened to douse any player not playing aggressive enough with the thermos . Fortunately, though , the Maroons played harder and compiled an undefeated regular season record. Those who advanced to the state tournament this year were 1986 co-captain Missy Holste in singles, along with the duo of 1987 co-captains Jenny Cunnington and Liz Murphy in doubles and the tandem of 1986 co-captain Kathy Holt and Missy Murphy in doubles. Under the iron fist of head coach Sparks, who imposed a strict curfew regiment, the Lady Netters garnished many top honors at the state tournament. Despite the efforts of Sparks, a large contingent of revelers, spearheaded by Adam LeGrande, Brock Petrie, and Steve Runkel, were able to infiltrate the training compound and permeate an atmosphere of jubulance. Since the Maroons will lose only one player next year, Senior Melissa Edwards, and the Freshmen as a group played exquisitely, the future for Girls Tennis at Central looks bright, even though the Maroons will be without Coach Sparks, who is hanging up his racket after three years as the girls' coach. All in all, it was a very successful year for the Girls Tennis Team, but a sad year as well as the girls realized it would be their last season with their faithful companion Sparky and his sidekick Luke.

SPIKERS EXPLODE FOR A GOOD SEASON VOL-LEY-BA-DOUBLE L VOLLEYBALL!!! That's right, volleyball . This year 's team was almost as close to awesome as you can get. Because of the teachers' strike they had to forfeit the first 3 games. That put them in a rather big hole if they were to do well this season. But team morale, spirit, and skill were high . They started their season on a fair note but once conference play started , they went on a tear beating cross town rival Centennial in a good game. The team was led by Marcy Maier and Cheryl Merkel but the junior class played the most dominant role displaying skills at every position at every moment. The season ended on a good note and regional play was next. Central was seeded first and in order to prove their ranking, they had to play hard. They beat their first opponent, but their second opponent was another story. Centennial stood in the way of the regional title and Central was bound to get it. Central won the first match, lost the second match, and with a 10-5 lead in the third match victory was almost certain. But a change took place and all of a sudden Centennial was ahead 14-12. The next point told everyone what was to happen. Centennial put the ball over the net on a very weak hit that somehow found a dry place to land. Centennial won leaving Central in a state of shock . That's okay gals we love you anyway, so just jam on them next year.

The Central Girls Swim Team ended their season strongly , t~k~ ing second place in the Sectional Meet. The Sectional Meet was truly a team effort. Many season-best times were turned in , and several swimmers, including Jo Ellen Brunson, Kimi Hart and Karen Phipps, earned personal-best times. Although Central will lose three terrific girls to college next year, the '87 season promises to be an outstanding one as this year 's large and talented group of freshmen now have a full year 's experience.

CAGERS FLICKER WITH HOPE This year's squad was a very inconsistent group, but they showed a lot of potential on the floor . On any given night they could beat the best of teams, or lose to the worst of teams. But the long hours of hard practice put in by the team and coaches paid off, as by the end of the season Coach Croy had molded his second team mto a well disciplined ballclub. With the Seniors' experience and leadership and the Juniors' raw talent, the club played well late in the season to finish with a 13-11 final record.

The Champaign Central Girls Varsity Basketball Team for the 1986-87 school year, was made up of two seniors, five juniors, and four sophomores. Coached by Fred Schooley, their season consisted of two tournaments and sixteen conference games. Marci Maier and Kristi Lemmon, the two seniors who have played with the team for four years, say the team this year worked as a unit. Hopefully next year they can continue to work together. With the victorious sophomores playing varsity in 1987-88, there will be high expectations for the team. Team Photo Row One - S. Jenks, T. McGowan, C. Maisel, S. Harris, T. Stull, F. Schooley. FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR WRESTLERS

Improvement is a slow process. There are many elements that go hand in hand to maximize that improvement. As far as CHS wrestling is concerned those elements include: conditioning, enthusiasm, and experience. According to second year head coach Curt Phelps the most detrimental aspect of his 1987 squad was the experience factor. It has been a few years since Central has had a good wrestling team and the varsity had little success again this year. With only three seniors on the team and quite a few people on the young side Coach Phelps had a lot of building to do. Mr. Phelps has numerous hopes for the future, "I want to be competitive in the area, along with that I see a .500 season next year and the fact that we should send some of our wrestlers to the sectionals and even to state." Wrestling is a difficult sport that demands an individual effort to help a team. Work is definitely not something missing from the wrestling Maroon's practices. Mr. Phelps had such an intense train of thought that it helps the team get more enthusiastic. He picks his rival coaches' brains for ideas for practice and yet he maintains his own philosophy. "These aren't just wrestlers, they're my friends . Everyone needs to be praised and have their self-confidence built up. This is our building year." Despite a lackluster year you can watch out for these grapplers down the road.

/ The cia" of 1987 may not have been successful in their quest to repeat as Homecoming Float Champions, but they did win the canned food drive sponsored by the National Honor Society . Class President Brock Petrie announced that the fifty dollar grand prize would be donated to The Cranial Research for the Poor Foundation, but he could not locate their headquarters and instead pocketed the money. The seniors finished with 189 cans , dominating the underclassmen. The seniors also extended their domination in the Park District intramural sports leagues. Senior year is the last time to be

children before entering the real world , no longer hearing nagging questions from parents and teachers. " Blowingoff" tests and homework, getting away with not dressing for PE and pushing the underclassmen around become the norm. Not only do seniors go to prom at the juniors ' expense but they also are seated on the floor of the gym during the Honors Day Assembly. Those are all forms of senioritis, which all seniors get a touch of during the year. Senior year is also time to send out announcements and be measured for caps and gowns for the big graduation. Graduation is not always the ending but the beginning of a new life. It is time to answer the repeated question: " What are your plans after high-school? " Some may decide to continue schooling and go on to college . Going to college required filling out applications, not to mention the anxiety acquired while waiting for the words in print " you are accepted." Not everyone wants to continue school. Some may decide to go on to business-school. Some may decide to enlist in the military. Whatever one 's decision may be, one will find it hard to forget how much Central added a little spark to their lives: Those long hard practices paying off in winning the big game or meet, attending the club and organization meetings, their favorite teachers who have influenced their lives in any way, or even meeting a special someone. In sharing these few moments with you, it was our hope to evoke precious memories of your stay here at San Quentin . .. er ... Central ; but, our main purpose was to eliminate some of the white space on this page.

The juniors class of '88 is all fired up and ready to take over the reins of power and authority next fall. Already the " senior attitude " is starting to show in some eager class members as their last high school summer fast approaches. The juniors have made it through what is often billed as the hardest year academically, with the worries of PSAT, the ACT, the SAT, and the very important class rank . They have survived all of this and are now ready for serious partying. This is going to be one wild summer for the juniors ... The sophomore class of '89 blazed a trail through Central this year. With such a wild and crazy bunch of students in attendance, the school is considered lucky to still be standing. Parties, parties, and more parties kept the sophies busy this year . The joy of no longer being the school babies combined with the freedom of not yet having to worry about the SAT or where to apply for college made the sophomores' year almost magical. How will they make that magic live on through the summer? Party, party, party! that's the only answer for the sophomores . . . The class of '90 are the ones to keep the fire going in the years to come. They made a giant leap forward this past fall as they entered CHS, and they not only survived the year, but did it well. They learned that there are no such things as elevator passes, nobody actually wears " the suggested P.E. uniform ," and deans really don 't stop students in the halls and demand to see their school I. D.'s . It was one of those years that will be half remembered for the excitement and half for the embarrassment. But, after all , isn 't that the kind of year that everyone else had to live through when they were freshmen . . .

An airplane is 191.6 kilometers due east of radar station A. A second radar station is 226.6 kilometers due north of A. What is the bearing of the second radar station from the airplane? Could our very own Future Problem Solvers solve this problem? The varsity members are Pete Austin, Joe Borovec, Dave Boyer, Steve Hutchings, Jason Beers, Kathy Christensen, Alex Fung, and Chris Ward. The members are praying for a victory at the Regional Competition at Olney. Armed with the basic philosophy "A pecan thingy is never worth as much as a cheese sandwich." The team is planning to go all the way to state. Mrs. Hill, the team sponsor of the club, has a hard time keeping down the enthusiasm of the varsity minds. Oh, by the way the answer is 319.8! Right?

What is it that makes Central High School what it is? The teachers, the faculty , the classes, or the students? Many people would say the students. Central's Student Council has done much to help the student body and to boost school spirits. The most notable of these accomplishments this year were the institution of the new Holiday Dance and continued efforts to keep the area llround Central litter-free. By reducing littering, in an agreement with City Council, time-limit parking around Central was changed from two hours to four. Student Council members are elected each spring by their peers. This year 's Student Council officers were: President Tracy Noonan, Vice President - Steve Raquel, Second Vice President - Jennifer Heinhorst, Secretary - Leslie Loyet, Treasurer - Katrina Wiholm, and Parliamentarian - Alex Rodgers.

The 1986-87 Champaign Central Chronicle plays an important role in the school unity of Central High. The primary function and goal of the paper is to capture the spirit of Central and portray it to the students while keeping them informed of issues and activities that affect them. The paper itself is organized and run by a staff consisting of thirteen students who are advised and sponsored by Pat Johnson, an English teacher at Central. The unique thing about Central's newspaper is that the entire production process, including the printing, occurs within Central's walls, whereas most area schools have to ship out their copy to be printed. For each edition of the Chroni¡ cle, approximately 600 copies are made. The number of issues produced varies each year. Last year there were 13 issues, but due to such difficulties as the thirteen day teacher's strike and a mechanical break down, the staff only planned on releasing 10 issues this year. Another function of the Chronicle is to provide experience for students interested in journalism careers. It helps these students upgrade their skills and prepare for a future as journalists. Through ads, sales, and the purchase of Chronicle cards, the newspaper earns money. This money is used to send selected staff members to the High School Journalism Institute at Indiana University for a session of intensive workshops. The students who attended the summer camp this year were Heather Hardin, Chris Hutjens, Julie Keller, and Jill Madsen. Heather and Julie both received honorary awards for their performance in newspaper lab, and Julie was also one of the five winners of an I.U. journalism scholarship.

The Peer Ear program assumes that peer influence can be constructive, that teens may relate better to each other than to adults, and that students can learn and implement beginning counseling techniques. Volunteer Peer Ears are selected to include different races, various grade and achievement levels, differing socio-economic backgrounds, and widespread geographical areas of the community. Peer Ears offer listening, support, and alternatives to students who want guidance in decision making. Peer Ears contact new students to assist in their orientation and adjustment to Central.

The yearbook staff would like to extend best wishes and a happy future to all who read this book. By "Lighting Up" Central for everyone to see, it has been the goal of the Maroon staff to place the events of this year down for everyone to see. Therefore, when this book is hauled down from the upper shelves of a dust-filled closet twenty years from now, and we begin to laugh at how strange we were, this book will remind us that we were not quite so silly and, in fact, we had a good time in High School. This book took many hours from many people to produce, and only this, the finished product, will tell if it was worth while. Many people will like the book. To them we offer a polite bow of thanks. Just as many will dislike the book. To them we offer our condolences and a whispered "Who cares what you think anyway!" The 1987 Maroon is not dedicated to any one person or thing, but rather to the school as a whole.
