Summer, it' s that two and a half months between the school years that we have to ourselves. No more early classes , homework , tests , or final grades to worry about . Everyone seems to spend the summer about the same working part time to earn some extra money , vacationing , tanning , swimming, partying , and loafing around . The memories made over the summer, the times spent with friends and family , they'll stay with us forever . Yea . . . those good ole' summer days during our high school years at Central. Everyone seems to agree that the summer is over before it starts.

The night they have all been waiting for. The night is graduation. All of the hard work for the past four years has finally paid off, and now they are able to fulfill their dreams. The ceremony took place at the famous Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Life ... yeah, that's what we strive for. On January 26, 1988 Central students and faculty helped preserve the lives of others by donating blood to the Champaign County Blood Bank. Even though donors had to meet basic requirements of being seventeen and weighing over 110 pounds, enough donated to collect 43 whole pints of blood. Central High School admires the sponsors: Student Council, Champaign County Blood Bank, and the donors themselves, who cared enough to give the touch of life to those who will need it most.

Float building, dress-up days, bonfires and school spirit certainly were felt throughout Central's halls during Homecoming week. Perhaps the biggest event of the week was the Homecoming dance. This year's dance was held at Thornburn Center and was a big success for all who attended. Couples danced to the sounds of the Red Pajamas under a ceiling of black, white and silver balloons. As the night grew near, anticipation increased awaiting the crowning of the King and the Queen, and their traditional dance. The end arrived and fond memories and pictures are what remain for the seniors, while freshmen, sophomores and juniors can look forward to many more "classic" dances. 1: The traditional couples scene at the dance. 2: King Jim and Queen Nicole stand together for a royal pose. 3: The Red Pajamas perform to an enthusiastic crowd. 4: Jim Helmick tries to perfect Janet Wooley's dancing style.

Central's annual bonfire is always anx ously anticipated by the students. The large crowd gathered at McKinley Field for the activities. They were entertained by the cheerleaders, with their comical impersonations of the football players, the Pepettes, with one of their impressive dance routines, and, of course, the football players, with their predictions for the game the next night. This was also the second year for the popular "Sexy Legs" contest. The winner was, the one and only, Dave Kucera. After the entertainment, everyone gathered around the fire to socialize.

If you are one to follow the fads, you'd probably ride in your beat up car (or on your skateboard) to school, with your old Levi's jacket on, and your braided bracelets on your wrists. If you're a guy, your style would resemble that of thirty years past, be it your letter jacket, comfy, rolled up Levi's, or your flat top hair cut. For you girls, however, your style would most likely include ice-washed jeans and skirts, long or mini, big sweaters, leather boots, and big earrings, and you'd probably be wearing your hair a little longer this year. In any case, the fads and fashions of Central High truly display its touch of class.

"BASEBALL HAD A MEDIOCRE SEASON, BUT WITH THE HELP OF THE J.V. PLAYERS AND KEY RETURNERS COMING BACK THEY SHOULD RETURN TO A WINNING SEASON." Baseball is a team sport, right? Well it's only a team sport half the time when it's played by Central. Central, as usual had an abundance of talent on the team, but failed to post a .500 season. Most of the time the players played to achieve individual accomplishments rather than play as a team. But the team did post some fine victories and showed fine team effort some of the time. The team played exceptional ball against Urbana and Centennial, winning both games. Some of the individual efforts that were worthy of post-season honors were: Rob Barham - who struck out 111 batters for the year. Andy Schuster - who batted .480 and struck out only twice in 106 plate appearances. Wilford Seward - who played in his first season and batted .380. He also played five different positions. The Central future does look brighter though, with five lettermen returning and some much improved J.V. players coming up. Hopefully Central will once again reign on the top of the Big Twelve next year.

"IT WAS A BUILDING YEAR IN WHICH WE IMPROVED IN MANY WAYS. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE EXCITING GAMES NEXT YEAR."- JENNI MILLER The 1986-87 softball team was composed of some very enthusiastic players with high hopes and dreams. With the experience gained from the preceding year, the varsity team was able to regain some of their pride . They even managed to beat their main rival , Centennial , twice . The girls didn 't do it alone , however. This year marked the first year for head coach Jenni Miller and assistant coach Mrs. Miller. Their hard work, good conditioning and talents should put some more games in the win column next season .

Coach Dennis Sparks, better known as the Plug, has done it again . The tennis guru has led his all-star Netters to another glorious season . A superior varsity team, confidence, and will to win helped them to finish second in the Big Twelve and first places in Kankakee and the sectionals overall. Senior varsity members, Marshall Schacht, Scott Fosler, Adam LeGrande, and Steve Runkle played to the best of their ability to help them finish in the top twenty in the state tournament. The '88 Maroon has also been predicted to be a state power this year. JUST LIKE THE STOCK MARKET, IT STARTED WITH A BANG AND ENDED WITH A WHIMPER. Central football is football traditional style. Not only does Central rank in the top five winningest schools in AMERICA, but it is also a school full of football talent year after year. This year 's team was no exception to the talent factor. But somewhere between the publicity and the game field something went wrong . One can blame the coaching, one can blame the players, and one can blame internal problems. But let's look at what really happened . Five seniors, all of whom would have started, quit for personal reasons or injuries, and the offense couldn 't find a consistent Q.B. Central also played in the very tough Big 12 Conference . All in all though , Central made the school proud , and the old faithful saying, " We 'll be better than ever next year," is ringing loud and clear in the hallways.

lENN19 WE'RE BAD! The Girls Tennis Team had an exciting, but also intense season . Not only did the girls go undefeated, but placed third in the Big 12, second at Districts, and sent four seniors to State. Much of their success was due to contributions made by their new coach, Scott Davis. M. Holste, K. Holt, J. Cunnington, and L. Murphy went to State in doubles. Depth was a key factor to the dominating season. J. Holt and A. Jahn rounded out the top six and remained undefeated in doubles. Both will be back next year along with K. Larson, B. Roberson, M. Murphy, and P. Russell. The girls on the J.V. team were always there for support when the varsity team needed it. Hopefully they will all be back next year. The seniors would like to wish Coach Davis the best of luck and hope he can find an easier route to Bloomington.

Central 's 1987 Golf Team was uncharacteristic of the past Central teams. There were only two returning lettermen: Chris Stines and Scott Grumish. First year varsity appearances were made by: Dave Mills, Rob Schroder, Jeff Troxell, and Chad Detamore. Central had a 6-6 record in dual meet competition. Their strongest Invitational was the Rantoul Invitational, where they finished fourth of thirteen teams. The strongest individual effort was by Chris Stines, when he finished seventh out of 130 players at the Decatur Invitational. Scott Grumish had to be the biggest disappointment. He was the returning champion of the Big Twelve, but could only manage a ninety-nine this year.

Soccttf IT WAS REALLY FUN PLAYING ON A WINNING TEAM. I THINK THIS COULD BE THE START OF SOMETHING BIG! - EDDIE DYSON. There was some concern at the beginning of the school year as to whether or not Central would have a soccer team because there was no coach available. Luckily for the skilled players of Central , Mr. John Reis stepped in as head coach with Scott Wilson as the assistant coach. Although they were disappointed with their performance during the state tournament, the Central Maroons had a successful season . They finished 9-5-2, considerably better then last year's record of 6-5-2. Two key varsity players senior Dan Shoemaker and junior Eddie Dyson, were chosen to play for the All Big 12 post-season team . Central 's soccer has improved every year since it was introduced as a varsity sport in 1985. We have high hopes for next year's team and their loyal fans wish them much success.

"EVEN THOUGH WE ARE LOSING OUR THREE BEST SENIORS, THE YOUNG AND TALENTED SWIMMERS WILL BE ABLE TO CARRY ON CENTRAL'S WINNING TRADITION" - SHANNON NOONON
The girls swimm1ng team had its ups and downs this season . Because of a very tough schedule, the talented Maroon swimmers were held to an overall record of 5-7, but proudly came in second in the Big 12 conference. The team excelled in the state tournament where they placed second in the regionals and 17th in the state meet. Outstanding senior Laura Wilborne placed fourth in the 200 individual madly and seventh place in the 500 freestyle. Next year's swimming team is expected to have a successful season also with the return of several outstanding underclassmen, such as Julie Summers, Kim Hart, Wendy Doddson , Leanne Gapsis and Shannon Noonan.

A 1c .,ro~s.. s---The Champaign Central Cross Country team ended the year on a good note. Led by Shad Shepston; a pack of three seniors Shay Shepsten, Kenny Arrington, and David Gengrich; and a strong pack of sophomores Pat Stines, Scott Elrick, and Ricky Vogt, the team reached its goals even with a plague of injuries and a stroke of bad luck. The team ended their season with a bright outlook on the future season .

WE HAD A LOT OF FUN. I'M GLAD I WENT OUT M SENIOR YEAR. - JAMIE McCOY Many fine qualities make up a cheerleading squad like the one we have at Central. Spirit, enthusiasm, vitality, and athletic ability are just a few of them. Our cheerleaders take pride in their support of varsity sports and promotion of school spirit. This year two new faces, Jamie McCoy and Anna Curry, were welcomed to the squad of cocaptains Shelley McConaha and Ursula Howard. LaDawn Febuary, Katie Madix, Abby Markward, Angie O'Neill, and Amy Ehler make up the rest of the team. New uniforms also added a touch of glamour to the 87-88 sports year.

PEPETlES IT WAS A LOT OF HARD WORK, BUT WE HAD FUN! JACQUE BOURNE The Pepettes' main purpose is, like that of the Cheerleaders , to keep the crowd motivated. The only difference is that the Pepettes perform only during half-time, whereas the Cheerleaders remain on the sideline during the entire game. During the first half of the game, the Pepettes wait anxiously to perform their routine to the best of their ability. Because the team isn 't on the field at this time, the crowd can give its full attention to the Pepettes. Dancing to all the latest music, they do their best to keep the spirit of the crowd at its peak. In order to do this, they must be able to work together. Each routine is made up by the Pepettes. They work hard during first hour every morning to perfect the routine. On some game days, they even have 7:30 a.m. practices to make sure every move is right.

BASKETBALL At the time of this writing the Central Cagers were 21-4, with their 20th victory coming against Centennial at Centennial. That isn't too bad. They were heading into Regionals with a good shot at winning it all, and placing well in the A.P. top 20 poll. No matter what happened , the Central Cagers had an outstanding team . It's been nearly 10 yrs. since a Central varsity team won 20 games or more. The reason for their success was because of an outstanding core of seniors who worked very well together. The team was led by the return of Julio Andujo who came back from Jacksonville for his final season as a Maroon. They were also led by the triple towers of Todd Snoeyink (6'4"), Russell Stewart (6'5"), and William Ward (6'6"). Petie Shaw also came around and played excellent ball for the Maroons. At the other guard position was Antony Clemons who can out dribble anybody around. The juniors who also contributed a lot were Arran Ammons , Kevin Head, and Mike Clemons. So next season looks like another exciting season for Central Basketball. Good Job Central!

Girls Baske+ball Central's 1987-88 Girls Varsity Basketball Team had a much improved season over last year. The girls opened the season with victories over both Centennial and Bloomington in the Centennial tournament. Even though the girls played well this year, next year also looks promising because the majority of the team will be returning . The 1987-88 team consisted of only two seniors, nine juniors, and one sophomore. More fans came out to support the girls this season, but next year they would like an even bigger turnout.

The 1987-1988 wrestling season is over before some people even knew it began . Still the close knit team acknowledges that before you can get fans , you must build a program . That goal is beginning to take shape. Curt Phelps, the acclaimed head coach , has a technique that is designed to shape the minds of any unmotivated wrestlers. Practices are held in the cafeteria and mats and pillars have to be taped every day in order to protect the fragile skulls of freshmen that accidentally fly across the room . The motto of the season has been, " Get by with what we have and do well with what we 've got. " With some help from the booster club the team now has new varsity uniforms and uniform bags. All of this helps in building a dynasty. As a young team the men have high expectations. Eventually Central may reach the top wrestling performances that were seen earlier in its history. It will take some time but once the dynasty has been achieved , word will get around. Then the spectators can appreciate the wrestlers as much as the wrestlers appreciate the spectators.

" This was a season of great pain, determination , and hard work. Coach Trigger and Coach Miller pushed us to our limits, but in the end it was all worth it! " Andy Schuster
Call them amiable, call them stubborn, call them salacious, call them cocky; but whatever you call them make sure the word " undefeated " is in your statement. No matter how you look at it, the Central swim team is good. They have power, depth, and leadership. They have gone through the Big 12 like terrorists. They leave other swimmers lying on the deck begging for Central to show pity toward them. But Central will never show pity. These boys can compete. They have an arsenal of at least six State contenders who did do damage to the Chicago teams at State. People may think the loss of Will Lane has devastated the team . But the sharp sting of Will leaving has been reduced to a mere pin prick with the help of newcomer Morten Anderson . Morten has come in and helped the team with not only good swims but also leadership. Other leaders on the team include captains Russ Hatch and Andy Schuster as well as Divers Steve Hutchings and Dan Shoemaker. These are just some of the many outstanding swimmers on Central's squad who helped make 1987-88 a great year for Central swimming. 1

THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS SEASON WAS THE TEAM SPIRIT AND FRIENDSHIP. WE WERE A UNIT. - ELIZABETH SHAUL The girls' volleyball team had a good season this year, finishing with 17 wins and 16 losses. The team struggled through the first part of the season, winning only 5 out of their first 13 games. Then Central entered the First Annual Centennial Tournament and brought home the first place trophy, defeating Urbana easily in two games. Central finished the regular season with a 15 and 15 overall record and were 6 and 5 in the Conference . Seniors Kathy Livingston, and Kelly Travers were named to the All-Conference Team, and seniors Shana Matejkowski and Patti Washburn were recognized on the Honorable Mention list. The team entered the Regional Tournament with a first place seeding, despite losing to Urbana in conference play. Central defeated Danville in the first round of Regional competition , and went on to face Urbana for the Regional championship. Urbana put up a fight, but Central brought home the Regional trophy for the first time in 4 years. Way to go Spikers!

li
It's classy to be a freshman because . . . . .. you can act stupid and get away with it. . .. we have great teachers! (Mrs. Johnson made me say it.) .. . when the seniors are 50, we 'll only be 47! . .. you get to start at the bottom and work your way up! .. . you get great exercise walking to lunch everyday . . . . anything you do wrong , you can use the ever so famous quote, " But I'm just a freshman. " . .. no one else gets to be laughed at every day . . . . next year I can get the Freshman girls! ... you 're young and enthusiastic.

At the Head of the Class National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is an organization which rewards students who meet national standards of academic accomplishment with membership in this prestigious club. Generally, the initiation ceremony held in the spring for new inductees is the event on which the club officers spend most of their time. But this year, the leadership is faced with a dilemma: Central 's Honor Society constitution contains bylaws that are obsolete and need to be changed. President Steve Hutchings, Vice-President Jeff Hamburg, Secretary Sara Marsh, and Treasurer Dan Eisenstein plan to revise the society's constitution, revamping some of its out-of-date stipulations. The officers foresee a bumper crop of new members in the future, and they are hoping for a successful, productive year for the organization. The Chronicle is Central's school newspaper whose staff is made up of fifteen students, guided by Pat Johnson, an English teacher at Central. The purpose of the Chronicle is to inform students at Central about the issues and activities around them and to entertain also. Two unique aspects about the paper are that it is printed at Central by graphic arts teacher Myron Ochs with the help of his graphic arts students, whereas most schools pay hundreds of dollars to have their papers printed professionally. Another interesting aspect is that through the sale of ads and the paper itself, it is completely self-funded. The money earned is used for supplies and also to send four staff members to a summer journalism camp at Indiana University. Although most who join the staff are seriously considering journalism as a career, students who enjoy writing and photography are welcome to become a part of the staff.

French National Honor Society is comprised of a bunch of fun-loving , diligent students of French who have been inducted into the society in recognition of their high level of achievement in the language. Even though club meetings are few and far between, the officers of the FNHS: Pres., Jeff Hamburg, V.P., Kara Gower, Treas., Dan Eisenstein, and Sec., Kim Clayman, are planning a lavish induction ceremony in the spring that the inductees will not soon forget. The French National Honor Society does not sponsor fundraisers, nor does it offer organized activities for its members. It does, however, promote a sense of warm, scholarly camaraderie amongst its members.

Among the several clubs sponsored at Central, Principal Scholars is sometimes overlooked or forgotten in the midst of g1ants such as Key Club and the National Honor Society. ThiS is unfortunate, for this club offers an exceptionally valuable opportunity for its members. The central function of Pnncipal Scholars is to afford black high school students a chance to visit college campuses around this area. It is the purpose of this service to stimulate interest amid Central's Negro population to strongly consider the avenue of higher education. The old adage contends that sometimes large and special thmgs come in small packages, and it holds true in this case. Though it be little-known, Principal Scholars is tremendously beneficial to the black community.

Band Has A
Golden Touch Central has many things to be proud of, but one of the things that is least noticed is the Central Band. The band is composed of three different groups: Marching, Symphonic, and Jazz Band . The Marching Band performs at all home football games, and competes at state-wide contests . The Symphonic Band performs college-level literature and performs three concerts per year. The band also has the distinction of being regarded as the best high school band in the area. The last band is the Jazz Band . Last December, the band performed at the International Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. This honor deems them as one of the finest high school jazz bands in the country. The band is also noted for a large number of All-State participants including Barb Berdahl , Russell Stewart, Jim Pryor, Taimur Sullivan, Ben Grosser, and Keith Moore.

Office Occupations Sparks Your Interest
Office Occupations is a club that is interrelated with the class, which is also called Office Occupations. The club's purpose is to sponsor money-making events to help with the annual " Employer Banquet. " This is a spring event where all students in the program honor their bosses. These students attend school in the morning while working office jobs in the afternoon, this gives the student actual on-the-job training. Also, several typing and other types of contests are sponsored during the year by this club.

SPEECH TEAM Speech Team is one of the few academic teams at Central, and a very successful one. The team has won the Regional Tournament as well as many others. Speech Team is not all work; members get to stay in hotels with swimming pools and watch Broadway plays in Chicago. They dine at only the finest restaurants and they hold group seances. One group of members even learned an ancient tribal language during the ISU tournament. This year, the area of schools to compete with was broadened and the tournaments were more frequent. Outstanding members were: Sarah Metz, Liz Neal, Karen Kleckner, Sara Zion and Dave Lazar. A yearbook is considered a work of art by many people because of the uniqueness, originality, and effort that is put into it. We believe that the 1988 Maroon staff has done just that. With the theme " Touch of Class ," we tried to touch as many of you out there as we could so you would be able to keep hold of everlasting memories of times gone past. We also believe that not only are we the makers of this book, but so are you . Your contribution as a student makes it special to all those who read it. We are proud that everybody had a part in a work of art that hopefully has a Touch of Class in it.
The Maroon would like to thank: Mr. Kull Rebecca Angerer Mrs. Joyce Bourne Dave Kusera Kim Catchings Amber Marceau Annie Ekvinai Sherry Mostert Matt Frank Liz Neal Shannon Noonan Steve Gilmore Gina Graziano Diane Ryherd Shay Shepston Becky Hicks Scott Johnson Todd Snoeyink Kristen Kasper Dirk Vanvorst The News-Gazette Karen Kleckner ... and all the other people who helped make this book - THANKS AGAIN!!
