ORDS ''A yearbook captures the many special memories of the year. These memories of our friends, teachers, and the good times we had are permanently recorded in both the pictures and the print. The 1988-89 Maroon is a reflection of all of you at Central High School, and what better way could we sum up this year then through your words. That is the reason we chose this year's theme "Famous Last Words." Throughout each section there are quotes from you, the student. These quotes tell us about our school- the clubs, sports, staff and students. They will enable us to hold onto the fading memories of our high school days. They are the "Famous Last Words" that will capture the essence of the 88-89 ' ' school year.

HOMECOMING '88 "Homecoming '88 was a highlight This year Homecoming week took place September 19-24. It started off with a bang as students wore their favorite college attire. Tuesday, all athletes rejoiced as they dressed up in their best uniform. The peace revolution came along as Hippie day was here. It was a real sleeper of a day as kids wore their pajamas to school. We ended up the week with everyone wearing his maroon and white. The Homecoming a sembly took place Friday the 23rd, with the sophomores winning the float competition and the seniors taking the winning pull in the tug o' war. Afterwards, the parade took place with the band leading the way for the Homecoming court and class floats. As Friday came to an end, everyone's spirits were in high hopes for the Homecoming game.

FADS AND FASHIONS "Just be yourself tonight." - Michaelene Potter The fads and fashions at Central High are about as diversified as the people that attend. One thing stood out though, color was in! Colors of clothing ranged from basic black to lime green. The style for boys and girls was pretty much the same. Jeans and loose shirts were favored. Other variations of clothing included tie-dyed shirts and rolled up jeans or tight bicycle pants. Over all the fads and fashions at Central were as wild as the students themselves.

GRADUATION 1988 "Best class yet, good luck 88'" -Mr. Wojtena With memories of Homecoming, parties, exams, and Prom behind them, our Central High School seniors faced graduation with mixed emotions. On one hand, all their years of public education were over. "Thank goodness for that fact," many thought. On the other hand, their new found freedom also meant increased responsibilities. Baseball "We lost ten games in a row, but thanks to the seniors' determination, and the skill of the younger players, whom the seniors couldn't stand, we managed to get second in regionals." - Nate Baker
The 1988 season started out poorly for the Maroons, but Central finished strong at the end of the season. In the Regional tournament, the Maroons upset third seed Pontiac behind standout pitching and great effort defensively. They continued their string of upsets by upending a tough Bloomington team. Michael Clemons keyed the victory with a three run blast in the games late innings. Central, however, was defeated in the regional championship to Normal Community. The future looks bright for the Maroons, who return ten of thirteen lettermen including last years starting infield.

Pitcher Tammy Hindman, also a sophomore, captured all five wins for the season. Juniors Leslie Coates, Gwen Collins, and Laura De Atley each set team records. Coates had the most stolen bases (38), Collins had the highest batting average (.405), and De Atley the highest on base percentages (.508). Six out of the nine starters wiH return next year. IS "There was a lot of talent on the team, and through hard work we won our fourth straight sectional title." - Charlie Crawmer
First year head coach Scott Davis guided the varsity tennis team to another impressive season . The relatively young team dominated the twin cities , won the Bishop MacNamara tournament , and placed fourth in the Big 12. In addition, the Central team captured its fifth con ecutive ectional title achieving 30 out of a possible 32 points. This year quad was led by consistent play from Charlie Crawmer and Jason Fischer, outstanding doubles from Parham Parastaran , Dave Murphy, Iren Aikman and, Daniel Konisky and strong support all around. With the entire varsity squad returning, except for Jason Fischer, the '89 squad should be just as tenacious. trong performances should lead to another sectional title and earn another trip to state.

BOYS' TRACK "It was a lot of fun ... until we got coaches."Shad Shepston
The 1988 Boys Track Team had an excellent season. Leading the team were Coach Quinlan, Coach Goran, and Coach Stirrett. Under these coaches the team moved up two places from its 1987 seventh place finish, to fifth in the Big 12 Conference Meet. The team enjoyed success in dual meets by beating Urbana, Mattoon, and Stephen Decatur. Individual members of the team also did well. Shay Shepston qualified for the State Track Meet with an outstanding time of 1:56 in the BOOm run. Shepston was also part of the 4x1600 relay team that set a new school record. Members of that team were S. Shepston, M. Meyer, and P. Stines. GOLF "Bad courses and bad golf made up a bad team." -Tim Heath This year's gold team had some di appointments and some successes. The team rarely placed among the top ten in any of the tournaments they participated in. It was also a year of unimprovement for many of the players. On the other hand, they did have a winning season record of 9-5-1, which was an improvement over last year's record. The team gained some new talent from Tim 0' eil and Mark Sandquist and uncovered the talent of Tim Heath and Robert Beers. The Bigge l Success of the year was by Scott Grumish who won three dual meets, the Rantoul Invitational, and placed tenth in the tate meet. SOCCER "We had the best talent I think, but we just couldn't put it together." -Ed Dyson
Expectations were high for the Central soccer team this year, but after a tough loss to Urbana in the Regional tournament, the Maroons ended up with a disappointing 3-10-2 record. Despite Central 's lackluster performance, there were a few bright spots. Seniors Ed Dyson and Marco Nieto were selected to the All-Conference team and several underclassmen showed promise for the future . This year's squad was lead by head coach Jerry Butler and Second year assistant Scott Wilson. Although many key players will be lost due to graduation, the coaching staff is optimistic for next year. With a large crop of young players and a little luck, they hope to improve on this year's dismal season.

"What's the most important part of your race? THE FINISH!!!" - Rachel Hoover
The Central Girl's Swim Team proved to be quite powerful in the 1988-89 season. Although Central has had five different coaches in the past five years, first year coach Debra Simmons and assistant coach Pat Johnson continued the winning tradition. The team's efforts paid off by going undefeated the first half of the year, and finishing the season with a 10-2 record. Next year's team will be strong even though they are losing five seniors. Twelve freshmen added depth to the team, including Rachel Thurston, Brooke Johnson, Claire Kelly, Jessi Wood and diver Rachel Libman. Next year's team promises to be strong with the leadership and experience of five returning juniors.

This year the varsity cheerleading squad at Central had a unique quality. All eight member of the quad were enior . The co-captains of the Varsity quad were Ursula Howard and Angie O'Neill. Again this year, the squad continued the Homecoming tradition of staying up all night the day before the Homecoming game to make locker decorations, TP the players' houses, and terrorize the town. The JV squad was a combination of freshmen and sophomores. The captain of the JV squad was ophomore Stephanie Froe chi. Both squads attended cheerleading camps during the past ummer. The squ ads had a new sponsor this year, Ms. Debbie Brooks. Both squads were very successful in cheering the Central sports teams to vic tories and getting the fans fired up and supporting their school. Al

If you didn 't get a chance to see the halftime show at a home football or basketball game , you missed some exceptional entertainment - the Champaign Central Pepettes. The Pepettes perform original pompom routines which different members make up. The Pepettes practice every school day during first hour. Sometimes they have to come in for early morning practice at 7:30 a.m. to put the finishing touches on their routine. The captain of the 1988-1989 Pepettes was senior Valerie Gatson. This year the squad got two new additions. The first one was their new sponsors Ms . Gina Hageman and Mrs. Carolyn Assalley. The second addition was new uniforms which the girls earned through various fundraisers.

BOYS' BASKETBALL The '88- '89 Maroon basketball team met many obstacles during this year's season. The team had a lot of expectations after last year's record of 21 and 3. Hopes were high at the start but skepticism carne when the Maroons were not molding a winning season. The first breaking point of optimism arose when senior David Ross left the team after a loss to Lincoln. The final straw carne when Junior Cloyde Netter, the team's top scorer, transferred to Centennial. Coach Torn Croy had the resources of senior, Aaron Ammons, one of the Big Twelve's top three point shooters, sophomore rebounder, Walter Graham, and the support of his other talented players, but it was still not enough . Next year the Maroons hope to regain their composure with improved younger players and fan support.

The season produced numerous bright pot . however orne examples were the team's first victory against Prairie Central and con ecutive win again t Stephen Decatur and Decatur Eisenhower. The team was led thi year by the strong performance of Aaron Libman, who finished the season with an impre sive 20-11 record and narrowly missed qualifying for the state meet. Other strong efforts were given by Gerard Saylor and Chris Neal, who both advanced to the sectionals by placing third in the regional meet. People around the Big 12 Conference say of the Central Water Barriers, "They're cocky, they're salacious, and boy, are they down right unmerciful!" The Barriers earned their domineering reputation by swimming to a 7-1 Big 12 Conference record. The team's depth, leadership, and dedication to their sport has made the season a most successful one. The future looks bright as they hope to defend their Big 12 Conference and sectional titles and return once again to the state swim finals.

VOLLEYBALL "Volleyball was really fun, but if we didn't pend so much tim worrying about holding our shorts up, I think we could have ~von more games." - Stefanie Lemmon
This year's volleyball team had a rough eason. Plagued by injuries, the Maroons battled only to win ix matches during the year. Thi is nollo say that they did not have any talent or coaching, they did. oach Jenny Miller assi ted by ue Jean laughllhe learn a great deal about the game. The problem was replacing the injured players and getting everything to "work." Led by enior tefanie Lemmon. Leslie Coals, Jenny Manda, and Jenny Lynch the team gained a lot of knowledge and experience, and had fun as well. Next year's squad expects to have a highly competitive with orne ver experienced and killful pla ers. The future looks bright for Central volleyball. Good luck to the "REAL" team.

FAVORITE FRESHMAN ABUSE Kick to the groin. Tell them you will give them a ride to lunch, then before they can get to your car, take off and leave them standing there. Giving them wrong directions to a class. Kicking them in the teeth. Laugh at them while they are walking to lunch when it is raining. Calling them Freshmen. Going off right in their face when they don't realize it. Take them to Garcias and sit where they can't see you, so they wander all over looking for you. Killing them in flag football. Initiating those freshman swimmers, and making them look gay as hell.
Giving them dirty looks. Swirly. Blow up Colonial Pantry. Going out with them, and then breaking their hearts. Turn them around until they are dizzy, put a coffee can on their head, bang on it with a pair of drumsticks, or stick them to the wall. Getting them trashed, then driving around with them naked, strapped to the front of the car with carrots stuck up their nostrils. Knowing they don't exist. Upper cut to the spleen. Telling them their class is on the fourth floor. Trying to hit them with a soccer ball during P.E. 93
EMBARRASSING MOMENTS Throwing up on myself New Year's Eve Uunior year) at Jenny's house. Being seen with Michelle Burdette, stowing away on the soccer bus, after a cooler breakfast falling down the steps face first in school freshman year in front of the senior guys. Standing in front of the lady at Colonial Pantry and exchanging pieces of paper for two containers of nourishment with her. Getting drunk at Notre Dame. When I was going up the stairs eating a cupcake and tripped going up the stairs ... cupcake in my face. When we lost the keys to Cindy's car and I was sitting on them all the time. Going out with Will Schwerdt. Riding my bike with no hands when I was 10 and I crashed. Prom with Dave Smithog freshman year, and crashing into a light pole before school. Crashing into a stone block 2 blocks away from the party I was at thinking it was a corner. Freshman year. Getting the car smashed on University by a nerd. Tripping at Rantoul while warming up for a basketball game. Vice-Versa with Greg Baylor. My sophomore year while at Garcia's for lunch with the B's and company. Charlie Younger, and the quite large tray full of food I spilled in front of him. Him later asking me if I needed a hand. He was such a senior GOD! Talking bad about Murphy's Pub and they were sitting right beside me. Getting my car towed at Orchard Downs for parking illegally. My hubcap falling off with the B-hubcap crew. Losing over 3 wrestling matches my freshman year. Junior year, I got this bright idea of scaring Amy E. while she was in her car. After I scared her, I turned around and tripped over a brick in the street. Freshman year, everclear, Pizzaman, Manhunt, sliding down steps, Home, Caught. Walking in a guy's locker room (but I never saw anyone) at a help club. Falling off a table at a party. Getting sick in nice cars, that aren't your own. Hanging upside down in Scott park on the Monkey bars and having my sweater fall. I fell in the mall on a crowded Saturday afternoon.

Puking during my Spanish final during sophomore year. Having my first wreck in McDonald's parking lot. When Kerri first got her license, sophomore year, we got lost at lunch trying to find Garcia's, finally getting to McDonald's, then going the wrong way on Kirby with cars coming towards us and freaking out thinking one of them was her mom. Sneezing in my sleep and waking up after I blew my nose in what turned out to be my bedspread. Being stoned, everybody knowing it, and taking off in front of school leaving my book bag and purse in the street and having papers off the top of my car flying all over then having to go back and get them all while everyone was dying laughing. Kissing Tom before shop class and opening my eyes to see Mr. Morefield was watching us. John throwing a bucket of water on me at a party. Falling into a pool in late November and being pulled out and dragged into the garage left there like a dog so I wouldn't drip on the carpet. Caught with beverages at Morissey park, stealing a plant from Garcia's, almost hitting three large college people with my car on campus then having my car stall. Seeing L.D. freak out on herself. Driving my wrecked car down Market street and then having a wine cooler fall out of the side of my truck. Ed's sister blocking my shot playing basketball. Trying to moon someone going down Green street, they pulled around a corner and I ended up mooning a cop. Staining the Arby's parking lot on the night of November 9, 1987. Talking to "Marie" at three in morning. Freshman and Sophomore year when I had a crush on chicken neck. Doodling in the margins about Kay. Accidentally making W.S. fall in front of al urn pat Dillman. When I got hit by that big semi-truck.
FAVORITE MEMORIES Peoria Basketball tournament, sliding into home (L.D.), Basketball warm-ups at Rantoul, and ice skating. Playing Flag Football for Domino's. "It is a toothpick!" Finding out that the world was a mouth, and I was the tooth! Flag Football games, me and Fay on Bessie sitting in Noriss' parking lot during an all nighter. Going to Indianapolis with Heather and Cindy over Spring Break '88. Palm Springs '88. Being in Florida on Spring Break with Heather - and our matching bathing suits. All the parties. Driving 50 miles to see the traveling Elvis museum and only staying 5 minutes. Fourth of July 1988. Marcy Plumb took me to Prospect Motel. The Fair, Summer of 1986, the week at the farm, Spring Break '88, and being the Killer B's. My seventeenth birthday with Rachel, Kim and John, the INXS concerts, first with the B's, and then with my sweetie, and lastly, leaving notes on Sully's car with Kimi and getting busted by him after he got off work. Orchard Downs when Thomp's car got towed. Trips to the Beefhouse with Jenny and Fay, Thomps summer birthdays, time spent with S.F. and W.S. Psych class with Selby. W. William at 2:00 by the duck church with Meg's parents at a party. Splashing Rex on campus with the car and later we asked him what happened. Having all of our families together for Christmas and Thanksgiving. Heather Thompson's 17th b-day party at Noriss'. Spending 10 days in Florida with David.
Junior Year going to Homecoming with J.T. as we rode in the back of the van. Collin. Walgreens. The Tooth. Spending late summer nights with D.V.V.!!! Central vs. Danville game when about 50 people stood up and said a cheer together. Having an old grit ask me to go home with him while Lynn and I sat in Deluxe, getting restless in the Killer Tomato, cruising in the Pig, being called a freak by a social wannabe. Spying on basketball and poker players, notes on cars, concerts, unexpected run-ins, pillow fights. Room 409 Prom, October 24, 1987, Centennial game '87 and '88. Prom '87. Trying to smoke some foreign substance through my eyeball. All the fun times with Amy, Debbie, Dawn, Kara, Stephanie, Nikki, Melinda, Troy, and of course every minute I have spent with Tom Elliot. Summer of '88 with Misti and Abby, Centennials Homecoming 1988, and tailgating in October. Stealing a chair from Garcia's. When Jermaine Williams set Robert Tester's arm on fire with a bottle of Drakkar cologne. Spending time with S.D., Sophomore year. Jim Good's X-mas parties when Ned slipped 20 feet and didn't on ice and didn't spill a drop. A teacher of mine walking out of the bathroom with toilet paper hanging out of their pants. About a foot of it! Telling Ed to go touch the street light over and over and watching Warriors while someone was busy. Getting Drunk, I think. Sarah and her everclear! Summer '88 with Karen and Misti, Tailgreat, Florida freshman year with M.H. Road trips with J.M. Scoring seven points in the last four minutes of a sophomore basketball game that we were winning already by about 20 points. With Trina, tripping through the snow in front of "A's" house. Going out with Larry Collins.

This year's Student Council sponsored several new activities as well as many annual ones. The Homecoming festivities , the Winter dance, and the Vice-Versa were huge successes. Bribe-a-Teacher day, Holiday Jingles, and the blood drive were well received by the students as well. Student Council did many new things this year as well. These included a Charity Dance, hosting the District Student Council Convention, Pumpkin Grams, and Meteorfest. Within themselves they started Parliamentary procedure and a point system. Student Council also tried to become more involved with the administration by forming several groups who met regularly with the faculty members. They also offered a scholarship this year and hope to make it a tradition. You can definitely see the leadership, dedication, and hard work these students have shown this year.

1988-89 was a continuation of our school's tradition of outstanding choral performance . The Madrigals, wing, Treble and Chamber Choirs put on many concerts, both combined and separately, in order to share their exceptional talents with others. All four groups performed at the annual Fall, Holiday and Spring Concerts. The Madrigals also coordinated the very successful Madrigal Dinner in the fall and the Swing Choir did a wonderful job in the Spring Swing how. The Treble and Chamber Choirs, mostly underclassmen, as well as the Madrigals and Swing Choir, the majority of which are upperclassmen, all deserve a round of applause for their hard work. Despite the shortage of boys in the mixed choirs, everyone performed well to produce a great year of music at Central!

CHAMPAIGN CENTRAL BAND
"It's been a great four years and I've really learned a lot. Most of all the band is finally earning the respect that it should have, not only from the pupils but from the administrators and the community as well." - Chuck Barham
'88-'89
Like the Chicago Bears, the Champaign Central band program was in transition this year. Losing key players to graduation and one for other reasons, the bands were destined for a decline. But the dedicated, hard working band students proved that work ethic can overcome adversity. The marching band had no sooner completed its trip to Florida when the official season started. The band took first place at the Charger Invitational and followed with a first at the Danville Viking competition. A disappointment at the U of I contest proved the band was not infallible, but the season was still a success. Central's highly acclaimed Jazz Band, led by seniors Alex Lazarvich, Chris Nicholas, Jim Pryor, Bob Erwin, and Chuck Barham, overcame adversity to once again excel. The hard work taught by Mr. Kull proved a key in rebuilding the band. The symphonic band continues to amaze the world of high school music. Like the Bears, Central's band surprised everybody in 1988-89. 1: Michael Krug blows his brains out. 2: Casey Krull, Shelley Stoerger and Sarah Harkness perform for the Homecoming assembly. 3: Elaine Caspers takes charge.

El club de espafwl had a whopping 120 members this year. The club initiated a point system that the officers created with hopes of activating the students and enhancing responsibility. Various activities enabled students to earn points; and those who made exceptional efforts were rewarded in the spring. Fundraising activities included candy and flower sales. Members are eligible for scholarships to Lake Geneva, WI for a Spanish emersion weekend. Other point awarded activities include: attending bi-monthly meetings, the extra-curricular Copacabana held every November at the Illini Union, a dinner at Chi-Chi's, and the annual trip to Chicago. Also, in cooperation with student council, the club volunteered to help keep Central and its neighbors clean by doing trash pick ups. This year's officers are Marisa Murphy, president; Michelle Hutjens, secretary; Heather Harris, vice-president; and Roberto Erwin, treasurer.
Spanish Jionor SocietH SHS is a group of students who excel in Spanish. The society offers weekly tutoring to anyone needing help in Spanish. The 1988-89 French Club is very ognizanl of the language barrier and tried to resolve the problem through club activities such as the Hokey-Pokey and Twister. Money was bolstered through the mark ling of caramel apples whose sheer toxicity has changed the mores and folkways of our always ethnocentric student body. The year was marked ~ by an xciting trip to the ~ Windy City in which the constituents of the club enjoyed some incredible artwork by Gauguin and feasted on bread and candied yams.

The speech team is one of the few academic competing teams at Central. Students compete individually or with a partner in a variety of public speaking events. They travel throughout the state speaking their words of wisdom bringing happiness and light to all those whom they encounter. Under the divine leadership of Sally Pilcher, last year's team boosted five state entries and recognition of excellence in the SCOTIE tournament of champions. The team hopes to repeat its success this year .

Three such groups exist at Central. Office Occupations is one and consists of students whose secretarial skills learned at school are further refined and developed at a variety of office job placements throughout the community. The Intramural Program sponsored by the Champaign Park District has proven to be a large part of student activities for many years. This year, girls' flag football and boys' basketball are as popular as ever. While some Junior and Senior teams battled it out for the top positions, other teams blew off the heavy threat of competition and just had fun. Although sophomore teams are not as competitive, this year they proved to be contenders. Through Intramurals, all students feel the thrill of competition, and some learn the value of good sportsmanship. After all , it's not winning or losing, it's how you play the game.
All Intramural teams were contacted or asked to contact the Marcon staff for pictures. If your team was not mentioned or pictured, we apologize. However, due to a lack of cooperation or lack of interest, getting all teams photographed was impossible.
