WELCOME BACK!!! j~jF~~~ irst Day '91-'92 iF"~-----,

The first day back to school was filled with anxiety, excitement, and sweat. Between the new freshman who were trying to find the fourth floor, the sophomores who were still freshman at heart, the juniors who were finally upperclassmen, and the SENIORS who were ready to make an impression and then get the hell out, the school was buzzing. Near record high temperatures made the first week nearly unbearable, but the administration shortened the school days to miss the brunt of the heat. Freshman Tasha Anderson commented, " Damn, It's hot!!! " This pretty much summed up the feelings of all the students and faculty except for the very qualified deans, principals, and counselors who were sitting very comfortably in their air conditioned offices.

Oh my God, the seniors are sooo weird! This senior is enthused by her schedule.

Steve Dyson takes a jab to the face. Why won't my locker open?

. ack to School Dance

Well, this years Back to School Dance was a great success. Because the heat index soared to 95 degrees the night of August 30th, the dance was held in the courtyard for the first time. There was but one problem-the police were called by neighbors to investigate the "obnoxious" noise coming from the high school. Luckily, nobody ran when the cops showed up, and the dance was dubbed "the best ever" by all who attended. These radiant smiles are deemed to melt a few hearts.

Two of the D.J.'s take a well deserved break. Gayla can only wish that she is a senior.

These guys will tell you that women are just not worth the time. Billy Durbin learns the hard way that even freshman know how to reject.

Everyone at Central has caught the sixties fashion wave. tudents have reverted back to ty -dyed tee' strands of beads, and the oh-so popular cutoffs. On an given day one you can walk down the hall and see at least ten people wearing overalls. These aren' t the OSH KOSH B'GOSH overalls our mothers dressed us in as children, but the more stylish versions: Guess and Levis. Of course, as with any fad, there is a "cool" way to wear them; with one shoulder strap unbuttoned and hanging down.

Student's at Central have been swept up into the Beverly Hills 90210 phenomenon. Every Thursday

between 8:00pm and 9:00pm most Central students drop everything and tune in. This show has brought back a fad from the past; sideburns. This may have something to do with the fact that two of the hottest character wear them. This fad has even caught on at Central, or could this be Be erly Hills?

This label was created to warn parents of music Wl explict lyrics. It failed . Instead it turned out to be mark of good music. Students look for it, more th .

THE HEAT IS ON The Homecoming Bonfire definitely made an impression this year. The night got all the Central students ready for the Homecoming These students take time out for a picture. football game. As the Bonfire began, the cheerleaders showed off their " spirit" and led the crowd in a few cheers. Then, several junior guys did an imrnitation of the varsity cheerleaders. The excitement continued as the Pepettes got the crowd aroused with their dance routine. Chad Collins took first place in the traditional " sexy legs" contest. The band played and the fire burned high as the students got psyched up for the game and several other Homecoming activities that were planned for the weekend. When students were polled on the outcome of Homecoming, responses said that the parade was fun, there was too long of a line for pictures at the dance, and the Bonfire left the best impression!

GO MAROONS! Central High School's annual Pep Assembly was held in Combes Gym. The day of the big game between the Maroons and the Railsplitters was tense with the absence of the Varsity Cheerleaders; however, the J.V. Cheerleaders and the Pepettes inspired everyone regardless. The crowd cheered heartily as the class competitions started, and the male pepettes strutted their moves. The seniors won the float competition for the second year in a row. Homecoming activities kept Central students busy the week of Sept. 16th. Dress-up days topped the list of events. Everyone showed their spirit by participating in old favorites such as College Day and Maroon & White Day. Umbro Day, new to Homecoming week, was extremely popular. Pajama Day brought many lazy students to class, and Hippie Day has never seen better costumes. Whether they were dressed for bed or decked out in school colors, Central students definitely left an impression during Homecoming week'91. Jill Stephens, Jill Cavey, Tamara Woodis, Laura Kakoma, and Carrie Stephens are ready for Homecoming.

WANNA DANCE? Central's 1991 Homecomng dance was a great success. The dance definitely made an impression with the outstanding number of people that showed up. The freshman came ready to experience their first high school homecoming. The sophomores came in groups ready to have fun. The juniors came to get their pictures taken and leave. The seniors came ready to make an impression at their last homecoming dance. (And the cheerleaders sat at home!) The crowd spent the majority of the evening standing in line to get their pictures taken. Even though the music wasn't very exciting, a few of the remaining students decided to make the most of their night and dance to the tunes. One highlight of the night was the crowning of the King, Thomas Parker and Queen Rochelle Smith . Everyone left with a smile and went on to enjoy the rest of their night. In all, the night was a great success and a terrific experience for everyone.

''HARVEY!'' Central High School's Fall Play this year was "Harvey". It was a play about an imaginary rabit who was a man's best friend. Because the people around him considered him 'mentally ill', he was placed in a psychiatric ward where humor took over the stage. With well dramatized scenes, the actors portrayed their respective parts well enough to sell a considerable amount of tickets for all the performances. The play was directed by John Stuff, and assisted by several Central students. With a cast that was uniquely concocted, this play showed that all happiness isn't from the reality of the mind, but the dreams of the heart.

SINGIN' ON THE JOB ~ F all Musical The play "Working" was this year's fall musical. The sounds of joy, frustration, and sorrow by people of different occupations were emphasized. Talented actors showed the realistic trials and tribulations that people experience with their jobs. The stage director was Kathy Murphy who created the right 'mood' for the characters to portray, and Don Decker supplied the musical direction. The choreography for the play came from Central students: Whitney Freehill, Jessie Leasch, Elizabeth Marino, and aU. of I. student Amanda Floor.

Is the view of her better up here or what!?!?

I should've taken the other job; the work's easier.

~ GREASE IS THE WORD The spring musical, " Grease," definitely made an impression. The musical ran for four nights, April 17-20, plus a special held over matinee on April 21. This huge success was not acheived without many hours of hard work. " Grease," added a new dimension to Central's repertoire; dance. The student's hard work, along with Mrs. Kriningers awesome choreography proved that the dance steps were no obstacle. Music and stage direction were also essential parts of the show. The students took music direction from Mr. Decker, and stage direction from John Stuff and Kathy Murphy. Some people were offended by the subject matter in, " Grease"; teenage smoking, drinking, and sexuality. A few people left midway through the performance. "Grease," was one of the most risque musicals ever performed at Central, but by far the most successful.

Everyone was treated to pizza and soda, as well as a fun time. All who attended were pleased with the results of both the dance and the post-prom. ~ LASTING IMPRESSION Central's annual awards ceremony always makes a lasting impression on its students and the community. Year after year, Maroons are awarded for their talents, spirit, and devotion to the school. The awards ceremony is also very unusual, because Central is the only school in the Big 12 which honors its students in front of the entire student body. The impressions that Central students make on the community are always evident!

LEADERS WITH LOOKS Student Council This

year's Student Council once again proved to be one of great accomplishment. Led by the well-staffed executive board and patient advisor, Mrs. Jones, the council introduced many new activities and improved many old ones. The year started with an incredible " Back to School" dance that brought down the house and brought out the local police. The Homecoming festivities broke attendance records and shattered any misconceptions about the ability of a ''bunch of kids" to organize. Besides the many student-oriented activities, the council is involved in many service/community projects. The council guided the student body in setting an all-time, allarea record for pounds of canned food collected in the annual Bribe-a-Teacher day. The Blood Bank was also happy to return to the school which boasted the most new donors last year. Plans for the second semester are even more ambitious. A districtwide carnival, two $500 scholarships, and a council trip to Great America are just a few of the many worthwhile and exciting new activities.

IT'S A SMALL WORLD International Club The International Students Club is a group of students who are interested in learning the different cultures and customs from around the world. Many of the members of the club are new to the United States themselves. At their meetings, they read about different cultures and have students who are from different countries come in and talk about differences from one country to another. The members often attempt to have some hands on experience with other cultures. For instance, they cook the different foods from different countries and dress up in cerimonial outfits that certain countries wear. Imitating the various countries cultures can be fun in itself.

WORTH 1,000 WORDS Little Maroons Did you know that Central is not just a high school? Three days a week, the Uttle Maroons descend upon the building. These preschoolers are involved with the child development classes. They not only give our Central students first hand experience in caring for children, but also offer an option for parents who would have a tough time paying for day care- it's free. The Little Maroons are involved in many activities such as field trips, but the most noticeable of their activities is the Halloween parade. The preschoolers dress up in their costumes and go from room to room trick or treating.

new idea that recently hit the club scene here at Central is Math Club sponsored by Dennis Sparks. Math club helps with setting up the illinois Math League tests after school each month. This is a test given every so often that tests a student on their mathamatical aptitude. At the end of the year performance on the Math League tests help to determine the winner of the math award. Math Club also goes on educational field trips. Some ideas for this year include going to the Beckman Institute located at our very own University of illinois, the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, and other such places. If you have any interest in math, joining Math Club would be a very good way to learn more about it.

Science Club Central's Science Club is a group of intelligent students who enjoy exploring different fields of science. For example, this year they started out by launching model rockets. Robert Miller and Sarah Freyman sponsor the group and help them prepare for their different activities such as the Science Olympiad to be held at Parkland College sometime in February. This will be their second year at Science Olympiad, the first being very successful. Last year they made it to State, which is quite remarkable for a first time. Science Club also holds a science fair for the kids over at Dr. Howard Elementary School. Science Club offers an excellent opportunity for students to excel at science.

Thinking of projects for NASA was one of the club's many activities this year.

Archives Archives club here at Central has experienced a resurgence this year. Archives is attempting to preserve and then display the artifacts of Champaign high schools which document our memories. With sponsor Sally Pilcher and club president Abby Reynolds leading the way, the club has started a three phase project. Phase one of the project is the rotational display of the artifact collection on hallway and classroom walls and in strategically placed display cases. Phase two includes the collection and uncovering of more artifacts. They plan to run ads requesting material as well as soliciting narrative histories from alumni, retired teachers, and staff. Phase three includes, with the help of the Champaign Historical Society, the incorporation of the archive collection across all grade levels and across the curriculum.

PERSPICACIOUS PEOPLE Future Problem Solvers The Future Problem Solvers Club is a group of students who are intrigued by the problems that people encounter. They take these problems and try to think of various ways to solve them. The main point of the solutions is to be as creative as possible without stretching the bounds of reality (which sometimes is very hard to do!). Also, they attempt to solve many serious topics in a more relaxed manner that is not usually used. Interest in the problems of the everyday "Joe Cool" is what brings these students together to try to make this world- in which we will soon be adults- a better place by the time we get there.

Future Problem Solvers/Teen Congress

Teen Congress is a student forum that attacks controversial issues and openly debates them. Most of the time Teen Congress likes to debate highly emotional issues such as abortion, the death penalty, euthanasia, and the advertisement of contraceptives. All the topics are thorough! y covered, as well as researched and discussed for prolonged periods of time. Guest speakers come to express their opinionshoping to persuade students to one side or another. All of the members freely speak their mind about the issue at hand and make it clear where they stand. The students all respect one another's views and never take someone' s remarks personally.

THE FUTURE IS HERE Future Business Leaders of America Future Business Leaders of America is a club that takes business theories and puts them into a real life scenarios. Business teacher Mrs. Arnold is the the club sponsor. One of their projects is to set up an accounting system. They also visit several different businesses in the area that have functioning accounting, managing, and secretarial pools. They use the knowledge they gain on these trips to improve their business at school. The process may sound hard, but it is really interesting and fun.

The purpose of this club is to help them prepare for the problems of marriage, kids, and life in general that could arise in a " home-like" environment. Once they enter into the real world, they hope to be better prepared for the twists and curves that life will throw their way.

Students participating in this program, attend school in the morning and improve their basic skills. They take the CCE class which provides information and experience that will help them after they graduate. After their shortened school day the students take off the rest of the school day and go work. The flag corps at Central is composed of a select group of hard working girls. They perform routines at halftime of football games to accentuate the marching of the band. The Corps' main objective is to promote school spirit. Another brilliant routine.

When in doubt: Watch the next person.

If that doesn' t create school spirit, what will?

This trios shows it's not only about flags, but friends .

WE JAMMIN!!! Band This

year's Central band has had a flurry of activities. With marching, two jazz two combos, symphonic, and concert bands, you would think that they would be busy enough. The marching band participated in the University of illinois' band day and faired pretty well in competition. The jazz bands participated in the Centennial Jazz Festival as well as the annual Jazz '92. All the bands performed in many other shows throughout the year. A special incentive for this years band is their trip to Louisiana for a competition in New Orleans. Band members worked extremely hard throughout the year to raise money for the trip. Major fund raisers were selling programs at Fighting lllini football and basketball games along with a fruit sale. Leaders of this years band were Jim Hamilton playing the tenor sax for jazz band, Tina Gingerich on the trombone, and Mark Tan and Stuart Smith playing trumpets. Mr. Anderson was again the able band director.

Come, on everyone, Jazzercise!

The Hula Twins act suave.

Ow! Give me my tongue back!

AYEEAHOHOO Choir The Central choir department constantly strives to make an impression on the student body and the community. Choir members subscribe to a very rigorous scedule throughout the year. CREATIVE BUNCH Art Club The Art Club is a club that involves a lot of creativity and talent. This is a club for students who are interested in art. The members have abilities in such things as drawing and painting. This club works on things like art work for school functions and designs for the Tshirts for clubs. The members of Art Club participate in art contests. They also go on field trips throughout the school year. The students in this club help design art work for others and do many creative projects that students who are not in this club would not be able to participate in. Rachel Gaffron doesn't look too amused.

This art ciubber poses for the camera.

FUTURE STARS Rachel looks pretty ACTive.

Drama Club The Drama Club is a very ACTive club! The people in this club are very unique and have a great talent for acting. The students in Drama Club put on many plays for the rest of the student body at Central. This year they have worked on such plays as "Harvey", "Frummpled Fairytales", and "Dracula". Everyone enjoys the work of the Drama Club. The members of this club are aided by the talent and imagination of their director John Stuff. He has put together many plays and helped the students with their extremely hard work. Anyone who enjoys acting can join Drama Club but, it is not as easy as it looks. It requires quite a bit of dedication, imagination, talent, and a love for acting. Carmen Lozar, Rachel Gaffron, Rebecca Ochs,

icole Hericks, Grant Morenz

Grant definitely gets involved in his role. Don't pull too hard!

EXPRESS YOURSELF Speech Team The speech team has always been one of Central's most successful organizations. For the past six years, Maroons have competed in the state speech meet. Speech is considered an lliSA sport, so the team competes with Big 12 schools. Students participate in any division of their choice: Radio, acting duets, persuasive, extemporaneous, and humorous speeches, as well as dramatic interpretation and original comedies. Grant Morenz is the only returning state qualifier for Central this year.

Mrs. Pilcher gives her impressions on the speech team as she has coached it for the last eleven years: "I approach speech competitions with an emphasis on the student's own personal development rather than winning. If we lose a tournament, I don't have any resentment because although they might not have a trophy or a medal on their lapel, they have won in other ways. They are better people for speaking publicly and developing personal communication skills. This is what high school extracurricular activities should be about. Interestingly enough, we end up sending more kids to state each year with this philosophy."

The Russian Club turned from a regular language club to a current events club. The break up of the Soviet Union made it hard for the club to even follow which country was speaking Russian. The organization is enthusiastically planning a trip to Chicago, preparing a Russian dessert for the annual language dessert (probably not vodka cakes!), and gathering a volleyball team to play in the Foreign Language Club Tournament. Mr. Phillips has been the Russian teacher and club sponsor since its formation three years ago. This year's club was led by officers Andrea Buttitta, Terry Cunnington, Adam Nelson, and Scott Weber. The USSR may not endure, but the Russian Club does.

lt isn't that hard to learn Russian- you just have to know how to dance the Soviet way! Russian students model their books- " knugy."

This interview, along with the application, determines whether or not the student will become a Peer Ear. Once you become a Peer Ear you offer support and offer problem solving assistance to other students at Central. This program is available to anyone who needs help adjusting to school, dealing with parents, or just needs to talk. This process is completely confidential; no one ever knows if you go to see a Peer Ear. This year is the second year in which the Peer Ear program has offered mediating services. When two students have a disagreement they can got a Peer Ear mediator to help solve it.

HOBBS' HORDE Yearbook Contrary to the belief of the student body, the 1991-'92 yearbook class has not served as our study /sleep hour. We put many stressful hours of hot, sweaty, and grueling work into the production of this year's book. With new deadlines looming in our minds, we slaved at the tedious jobs that we try to become accustomed to. This year's class will be remembered as one that couldn't put their captions in the right place, our superiority over our sister publication, the Chronicle, and the singing of the rookie sensation Mark " I can make my face redder than Erica's" Hausserman. The all knowledgeable co-editor-incheifs of this book are the cool and collective Kristin Piper and Brad "I can ALWAYS get Missy mad at me" Casper.

Travis Blue, a Central High School freshman, passed away in the fall of 1991 as the result of an accident. We will remember Travis as a happy boy who always wore a smile on his face. Travis, a cub scout for three years, lived in the country, helped his father on the farm , and enjoyed visiting rural neighbors on his bicycle or snowmobile . A good student, Travis had looked forward to high school and was just getting involved at Central at the time of his death. He was planning to try out for the football team as a sophomore. We, on the 1992 Maroon staff, offer our sincere sympathy to Travis's family through this tribute to him in our book.

Play Ball! The Baseball Team anticipated a good season. With three starters from the 1990 season returning, they expected to have at least a 500 season . With eligibility problems, injuries, and a strong conference, however, their expectations were not met. Nevertheless, the season wasn't a complete loss. With team captains Dave Krug and Chad Rakers to lead them, the team won first place in the Spring Classic Baseball Tournament. Chad Rakers was selected as an All-Conference Big 12 East Division Shortstop. Sean Ford was selected on East Division Big 12 with an honorable mention. Shoundell Clemons was a News Gazette All-Area selection. The team played a strong non-conference schedule, and ended the season with 12 letter winners. There is a strong defensive outlook for next year and hopefully the 1992 season will be more sucessful.

Like, .... who's on first? Dave Krug wonders if the ball is ever going to come.

It's Rough Around The Edges, But Looks Promising

If you just looked at last year's Girls' Softball record, you wouldn't learn much about this team. Just because they lacked a winning season doesn't mean that they aren't dedicated and talanted athletes. Much of the Softball Team's lack of success can be attributed to the lack of older more experienced athletes. They were replaced by younger less experienced, but equally talented, players. Unfortunately that will continue this year, but to a higher degree. However, if the team can pull through this year, there is no doubt that in the years to come we will have an accomplished and experienced team.

This one is going long.

Will To Win The 1991 Boys Tennis team had a tough season with inconsistent matches and a lot of rainouts. A new coach, John Isenhower, was added to the netters line up. Coach Isenhower who is experienced in coaching wrestling and football had this to say about his teams performance, "The team played hard all year. I thought they played really well during tournments." The team was lead by co-captains Greg Metz and Rich Kozoll. The eight players that won letters were : David Konisky, Greg Metz, Rich Kozoll, Brian Brown, David Steigman, Ken Young, Mike Hammel, and Bob Boucek. The most valuable player award was given to David Konisky. Outstanding performance was awarded to Greg Metz and David Konisky for their doubles team. Despite their 1-8 record the team made a lasting impression. I wish I had worn my dentures!

Run , Baby, Run The 1990 Girls' Track team experienced a highly sucessful season. They started out as an inexperienced group of 45 people. With the guidence of the coaches Angie Johnson, Tracy Callivant, and Karen Weatherspoon, they ran like veterans in the end. Led by team captain Shannon Cobb and most valuble players Kristy Harris and Tina Walker, the track team finished sixth at the IHSA Sectionals and sent 6 athletes to State. Kristy Harris was named to the All-State Track Team. She placed forth in the IHSA State track meet and proudly set two school records. In a meet against Rantoul, Tina Walker ran the 100 meter run in 12.2 seconds. The season ended with 19 awards and 12 letter winners, proving that the strenuous workouts were worth it. Not Number One, But Working On It The 1991 Boys ' Track Team came through with another good season last year, though they suffered the loss of many accomplished senior runners from the previous year. The leadersip of captains Brian Rempe and Clyde Mize helped bring success in a season that was expected to be below standards. The team was also given a boost by the many incoming freshman runners and the more experienced squad of sophomores and juniors. With such a good crop of young runners moving up, it can only mean that the team will be better this year and in the years to come. This team is definitely on the upswing.

Why did I ever join track.

Hit, Hit, Hit! Only minor things led up to a rather unfortunate season of 7-3 for the Central Football team. Many little things added up. It wasn't that everyone didn't work hard, but it seemed as if things just couldn't flow together. "The offensive line was the heart of the team and everyone else helped out a little too," says Jeff Seaman. Well that's strange considering that Elliott Rodgers, a defensive player said, "Defense was the strong point." Hmm ... maybe they weren't working together. Either way the season was not as bad as many people may have thought. Many people who did not get the chance last year got playing time this year. You could see the improvements through out the season, which was due to the fact that they had excellent coaching which consisted of coaches, Trigger, Wooley, Garcia, Larson, Due, and sophmore coach Davis. "So many of our games were very close, we could have easily had a winning season, I think we proved that by beating McCarthur who beat Urbana. Our team was much better than our record shows, everyone really worked hard and hustled until the end. The boys should be proud of their season," says Offensive Coach Mr. Wooley. One player really summed up the season by saying, "People who live in the past have their future die soon. They say the best come to those who wait, well if that's true than Central should be #l in the year 2030! It was a privilege to be a part of the hundred year tradition of Central High School Football." ---Chad Collins (Barna Man).

Another Terrific Season The 1991 Girls' Tennis Team ended its varsity season with a winning record of 8-4, and a junior varsity record of 4-1. Leading the team were co-captains and doubles partners Anastasia Truran and Kristin Misner. This year, that dynamic duo placed 2nd in the Big 12 Conference Meet, 2nd in sectionals, qualified for the state tennis tournament (for the third year in a row), and finished the season with a record of 22-8. Freshman Gabrielle Giertz also made a great contribution with her 15-2 seasonal singles record. Although the team will be losing seniors Truran and Misner, returning next year will be Erica Leach, Gabrielle Giertz, Haley Brown, Laine Means, Betsy Owen, Tamara Woodis, Liz Duffy, Anne Misner, Michelle Shahin, Emilie Gunderson, Nicole Karr, and Becca Leasch. Furthermore, the devoted and enthusiastic Marge Anders will be coaching yet another terrific season.

Marked By Improvement The 1991 soccer team was one to be remembered. With coaches Anthony Moreillon and Mike Smiricky to lead them, the team had an exciting season. To start it all off, they began summer practice sessions in August. They trained three times a day, each practice consisting of a lot of running. This set the precedent of hard work for the players, and it continued throughout the season. With team captains Chad Rakers, Andy Hatch, and Sean Biddle as role models, a winning attitude and improved teamwork was acheived at CHS soccer. Chad Rakers was voted Most Valuable player and team spirit was at its peak. Team members described it as being a fun, exciting, and extravagant season, complete with many best records. Senior Andy Hatch exclaimed, "I think it was definitely the best season of my four years!" The team ended with a record of seven wins, six losses, and three ties. This proud record, however, was not an apt indicator of the teams' caliber. Hopefully, with the outstanding group of young players coming through the system, next year's record will do more justice.

Catch This Wave! The 1991 Girl's swim season will not be easily forgotten. With many people staying and many people coming it was sure to be promising. With a winning record of 10-2 everyone knew that Central was the team to beat! But the Maroons successful season was not accomplished by nothing. Practices consisted of around 5000 yards a night, but that's not all, there were morning practices also which consisted of weight lifting and running. This was clearly a team of varsity swimmers. And with a couple more great additions their goals were easily accomplished. First their new assistant coach, Jane Scoffield (sprint speacialist), and their new diving coach Kieth Scorzza. Even though they did not have any divers at the end of the year, Kieth became an exceptional swimming coach as well . The team also proved themselves by winning the Centennial Invitational, Conference, Sectionals, and 22nd place at the state meet in New Trier. The team also carried on many traditions such as their ever famous swim dinners, complete with lake swims, the school song, Max maroon, SOD's on Fridays, and throwing Jane in the water. These girls definitely exemplify the fact that hard work pays off in the end.---Good luck to all the seniors, we'll miss you and try to uphold all your traditions.---Kim Schuh.

Ahead Of The Rest The Cross-Country team had an excellent season this year with their dual meet record of 7-1. They placed first in the Danville Jamboree and the Twin City meet. In the Mattoon Invitational they placed second and they finished third in the Big 12 conference, and seventh in the Peoria Invitational. The team then went on to regionals and placed first. After the regionals they went to sectionals and finished third. The Maroons then went to state and finished an impressive 15th. This team had a huge amount of talent and it showed in their individual records. Brian Calhoun won 2 dual meets, finished 4th at the Danville Jamboree, 3rd in Twin City, 9th in Big 12 ,and 6th in Regional. Jason Sempsrott was the Twin City champion and placed 20th at the Mattoon Invitational. Todd Elrick was 6th in Twin City, 24th at the Mattoon Invitational and placed 80th at state. Josh Wyatt was 7th in Twin City, 21st at Mattoon, 7th in Regionals, 16th in sectional and was the teams most improved runner. Pete Billhymer won one varsity dual meet, was 12th in the Big 12, and lOth in Regional. Jessica Coonen was the star of the girls team, and finished well in each of her meets. The eight players who received letters this season were Mat Bennett, Pete Billhymer, Brian Calhoun, Andy Deponai, Todd Elrick, Chris Pickard, Jason Sempsrott, and Josh Wyatt. It's safe to assume that this years season met everyone's expectations and made a great immpression.

We've Got the Power The 1991 vollyball season was a successful one. In contrast to 1990's record of 9-21, Central had a winning record of 23-14 and were tri-champions of the Big 12 Conference. This is the first time Central has won this title in almost a decade. Finally, before being eliminated in the sectional tournament, Central defeated Rantoul to win the Regional title. There's Always Next Year. How can someone practice golf for so many years and not get any better? That is the question that Tim O'Neill, along with the rest of the Central Golf team, is asking himself right now. Although the team's members are rather unhappy with their season, many others would say that this year was a success. With only one loss in a dual meet and several good finishes in invitationals, you might ask how this team can complain. The seniors, Mark Sandquist and Tim O'Neill, along with four sophomores, all with high potential and several years of experience, were expecting at least a tenth place finish in the state meet. After winning the regional, they were sure that they'd get there. However, a very poor showing in the sectional extinguished this year's hopes, sending all of the Central Golf team, other than Jake Goldstein who made it to State as an individual and the team's two seniors, back to Champaign thinking only towards next year. Hope springs eternal, and next fall the golf team is expected to rise to new heights.

We've Got Spirit "We say Maroon, you say white - maroon ... white ... maroon ... white." All the yelling and chanting done on the football field and basketball court was led by the cheerleaders. The varsity squad was elected in the spring on the basis of teacher evaluations, skill, enthusiasm, and coordination. The squad's weekly practices involve many hours of hard work. The cheerleading squad performs and supports the football and basketball teams. They are also included in our school's pep assemblies, homecoming activities, fund raisers, and community functions. The squad is relatively young, so great things are expected for the future . The squad is also fortunate to have a talented young man as part of the squad . What would we do without our cheerleaders. You Don't Want None! The 1991 pompon squad was a great success. The 15-member squad improved immensely through hard work at intensive practices throughout the summer and the school year. They experienced a challenging and competitive summer pompon camp, with activities from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Pepettes were rated among the top five teams out of of forty. These prizewinners were led by a new coach, Sally Krinninger. With her experience, support, and dedication, the squad continued to excell with their dancing throughout the year. Football and basketball performances were successful, as was their performance at both of their competitions. Overall, the new style of performance from the Pepettes this year made a magnificent impression on this school. Hold it, wait, stop the beat- Baby, you know what we want!

Take It To The Hoop! Some might call them the "young riders". Most know them as the 1992 Boys' Basketball team. With only two returning players the year was off to a rather inexperienced start. Many games were lost because of silly mistakes, these games averaged a point spread of maybe 4-5 points. As the season progressed it became evident that there was a little inexperience at times, but at other times they had a chance to prove themselves, for example, the game against Cenntenial. Central was ahead the entire game and won 50-49, after Thomas Parker's winning free throw. "It's hard to win Varsity games with only Sophmores and Juniors, but I'm looking forward to next year," says Coach Croy.

Out To Win This year's basketball season was a big success over last years disapointing 0-24 record. The varsity and freshmen teams had new coaches for the season. The new varsity coach was Mike Woods and the new freshman coach was his son Andy Woods. The junior varsity coach was Fay Catchings. The varsity team had a much improved season. The junior varsity team had an above average season and will become even better with many returning players for next year's season. The freshmen team had an outstanding season and is sure to be excellent in the years to come. The varsity team had a lot of experience with seven returning players, but there were also many new faces including Amy Edwards who displayed a lot of talent. Carrie Harney, Kristy Harris, and Tyre Campbell were just some of the leaders of the team. Cheron Reed, Sheila Johnson and Martha McFarland were mentioned by fellow teammates as outstanding players on the sophomore squad. Jaime O'Conner and Nicole Karr were also said to be impressive.

Kristy proves she is head and shoulders above the rest.

Pin Him, Pin Him! "We did good under the circumstances," says Coach Dixon. The 1992 wrestling team was quite inexperienced. Most of the team was composed of sophomores and juniors. Although the team was a young one, they progressed superbly throughout the season. For example, they placed third in the tournament at Cenntenial. First year sophomore heavy weight, Jason Shelling, won three frosh-soph tournaments. 103 lb, Frank Hopkins, won the Champaign-Urbana Invitational. Another player went to Kankakee, to a top invitational, and placed second in the Big 12. Altogether the wrestling team was a great success. They, however, wouldn't be where they are if it weren't for the faithful Wrestlerettes. These girls are a crucial part of the meets. Scoring and timing are just some of their many duties. They also do locker decorations, and are secret pen pals to the Wrestlers. They are the extra help needed to produce successful meets. With the support of the Wrestlerettes and the many vigorous hours of practice, the team improved in many areas that they never had before. Everyone is looking forward to next year. Good luck boys!

The Higher We Climb, The Better The View. Swimming has gone quite well for the Central this year. Though the team suffered the loss of several senior swimmers from last year, they were able to bounce back and become the formidable competitors they are this year. The upper classmen have provided a large amount of help in that area. Elliott Rodgers, though only a junior, is the team's most experienced swimmer and best breast stroker. Robb Scott and Dave Butler are two of the team's seniors that help in the areas of backstroke and freestyle. Pat Elder is not only the most improved swimmer on the team, starting only last year, but he is the best butterflyer and all around swimmer. Though Conference hasn't occured as of the time of this writing, the team expects to do well. They hope to place first or second and will focus on Urbana as their main competitor. Next year, the team will have some making up to do, suffering from the loss of even more seniors this year. With Trigger recruiting, there should be no problem filling those gaps.

We were standing by when you took your first steps. We patched your knee after you let go of training wheels. We helped you recover from measles, flues, fractu res, fevers, lumps, bumps and mumps. We remember our diagnosis of "lovesick" and we smile. Thanks for letting us share the special moments .

MY MIND IS A PEARL

I CAN DO ANYTHING IN THE WORLD On Monday October 28, 1991 Central High School had a very special visitor. Reverand Jesse Jackson came to speak to the entire student body, faculty, administration, and local newsteams in a packed Combes Gymnasium. After an excellent introduction by Mrs. Catchings, Rev. Jackson spoke on a variety of topics. He told students the dangers of drugs, teen pregnancy, and dropping out of school. He encouraged students to set goals and make an effort to learn. Rev. Jackson spoke from experience. He told how he was raised without a father by a mother who had him when she was sixteen. He explained where he acquired his love for learning. Mrs. Shelby, his favorite teacher who inspired him to think, was the first to treat him as a person. He spoke about how he learned to fight for his education rather than take it for granted. He is a living testimony of what education can do for you. He has run for the United States Presidency twice, registered over one million voters, and he founded the Rainbow Coalition. He explained that through voting and politics we could cause change for the better. He then had everyone seventeen years and older come down and sign up for information on registering to vote. He was a very enthusuastic speaker who captivated his entire audience. He led the group in chants such as "I am somebody, Down with Dope-Up with Hope, My Mind is Pearl-! Can Do Anything in the World," and our favorite, "Central MaroonsNumber 1." 207

We lost our croppers and captions were hell Four whole ads that no one could sell. The proofs came back, we almost collapsed Someone's brain at the plant must have lapsed. Despite all the work, we always had fun Especially when we made the Chronicle look dumb. The days seemed shorter because of yearbook class How many teachers give you a permanent pass? And the two of us tried our best to get along But it's hard when I'm always right and you're always wrong. So now finally it's done, it's a wonderful book And your talent and time was all that it took! Thanks, Brad and Kristin P.S. Mud wrestling rules!
