Summer CENTRAL STUDENTS COVERED THE MAP THIS SUMMER SHOWING UP NOT ONLY HERE IN CHAMPAIGN , BUT IN ITALY, COLORADO , AND NEW MEXICO AS WELL . A FEW OF US WERE MAROONED IN CHAMPA IGN , BUT WITH ALL OUR PUBLIC POOLS , PARKS , AND COUNTLESS FIELDS TO CAMP OUT IN , THERE WAS PLENTY TO KEEP US ENTERTAINED .

ON AUGUST 27 , 2001 , CENTRAL STUDENTS RETURNED TO THESE HALLOWED HALLS FOR ANOTHER SCHOLASTIC ADVENTURE. STUDENTS CHECKED THEIR SCHEDULES , CAUGHT UP WITH OLD FRIENDS , FOUND THEIR CLASSES , AND PREPARED FOR ANOTHER YEAR MAROONED HERE AT CENTRAL. AT THE END OF THE DAY, EVERYONE HEADED TO THE ANNUAL BACKTO-SCHOOL DANCE IN THE COURTYARD.

BEACHES, AND NO LAKES OR OCEANS. ON TOP OF THAT , WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH SNOW AND ICE FOR AT LEAST THREE MONTHS OF THE YEAR . NO WONDER WHEN WE ASKED STUDENTS AND STAFF AT CENTRAL WHO

AN ISLAND WITH, THEY W ERE VERY EX CITED AT JUST THE THOUGHT OF BEING ON AN ISLAND. AS S OON AS YOU T HROW A BATHING SUIT ON AN D GET PEOPLE NEAR WATER, NOTICE HOW HAPPY THEY LOOK. WE HAVE TO TAKE IT FOR GRANTED THAT THEY ARE ALL WEARING SUNSCREEN. SO K EEPING WITH OUR THEME THIS YEAR OF '-BEING MAROONED HERE ARE SOME RESPONCES FROM THE STAFF AND STUDENTS AT CENTRAL ABOUT THE I DEA OF BEING MAROONED.

If I were marooned on an island. 1wo 1ld want to be with Julia Roberts. I never thought she was attract.iv~ with those ni l'ps. but after I saw her ii! those novies, boy, t.ha cLanged.

usical " WHEN YOU SEE A GUY REACH FOR THE STARS IN THE SKY, YOU CAN BET THAT HE' S DOING IT FOR SOME

DOLL. " THIS IS THE LESSON THAT A GROUP OF NEW YORK GAMBLERS LEARNED IN CENTRAL'S 2001 SPRING MUSICAL , " GUYS AND DOLLS. " THE SHOW STARRED SENIORS ABBY BURGETT , MORGAN DIETKUS , JACK MCCABE , RYAN SEGOVICH , CALEB KEITH , MAGGIE WEBER AND JUNIOR BRITT DECKER . THE SHOW RAN FROM APRIL 25-28 , 2001 . THIS CLASSIC MUS I CAL WAS A HUGE SUCCESS ; EVEN ROGER EBERT GAVE IT " TWO THUMBS UP" !

~~ IF YOU HAD TO BE MAROONED ANYWHERE WITH A GROUP OF MUSICIANS , IT WOULD CERTAINLY BE THE CENTRAL JAZZ BANDS , BECAUSE THEY MAKE A WONDERFUL KIND OF MUSIC! ON MAY 18 AND 19 , 2001 , THEY HELD " THE 32ND ANNUAL FESTIVAL-A HOMECOMING " IN COMBES GYM . IN ADDITION TO CENTRAL MUSICIANS , BANDS FROM CENTENNIAL , EDISON , FRANKLIN , AND PARKLAND COLLEGE ALSO PERFORMED , AS WELL AS TWO FAMOUS JAZZ MUSICIANS , KIM RICHMOND AND CLAY JENKINS . AS USUAL, THE GYM WAS TRANSFORMED INTO A NIGHT CLUB ATMOSPHERE COMPLETE WITH DIM LIGHTING , TABLE CANDLES , AND DELICIOUS FOOD FOR PURCHASE. THIS ANNUAL EVENT AT CHS IS TRULY SPECIAL AND MAKES US REALIZE WHAT A STRONG MUSIC PROGRAM WE HAVE HERE .

Jazz 2001

om THE TERM " HIGH SCHOOL PROM " GENERALLY BRINGS TO MIND PLEASANT THOUGHTS OF LIGHTS , MUSIC , DANCING , REFRESHMENTS , AND COLORFUL DRESSES (OR IN THE CASE OF CENTRAL'S PROM , A FEW COLORFUL TUXEDOS) . CENTRAL'S PROM 2001 " HANGING BY A MOMENT" WAS NO EXCEPTION . THE THEME OF A ROMANTIC NIGHT IN A TROPICAL PARADISE WAS CREATED BY EXOTIC PLANTS , HAWAIIAN TORCHES , PONDS , AND EVEN A TIKI HUT WHERE DELICIOUS PINA COLADAS AND STRAWBERRY DAIQUIRIS WERE AVAILABLE . TWINKLING LIGHTS AND MOVIE SCREENS ADDED TO THE MAGICAL ATMOSPHERE . THE PROM KING AND QUEEN WERE SHANEKA TERRELL AND DAN TRUPIN . AFTER THE DANCE , EVERYONE HEADED OVER TO WESTERN BOWL FOR COSMIC BOWLING AND OTHER FUN GAMES. ONCE AGAIN , CENTRAL'S PROM TURNED OUT A HUGE SUCCESS!

Cuba Trip

WHAT DID YOU DO DURING SPRING BREAK 2001? WAS IT MEMORABLE? EXCITING? INTERESTING? AT LEAST ONE GROUP FROM CENTRAL COULD ANSWER YES TO ALL OF THOSE QUESTIONS BECAUSE THEY SPENT THEIR SPRING BREAK IN CUBA. IT WASN 'T VERY EASY GETTING THERE. AS ELISE PARKERSTEPHEN EXPLAINED , " AFTER A TWO-HOUR DRIVE , THREE PLANES , AND AN EIGHT HOUR LAYOVER , OUR GROUP ENTERED JOSE MARTi AIRPORT IN HAVANA , CUBA ." BUT THEY DID ARRIVE SAFELY ON APRIL 4 , 2001 , IN A COUNTRY VERY MUCH DIFFERENT FROM THE U.S. THE TRIP WAS

,

NOT JUST A VACATION BUT A HUMANITARIAN TRIP FOR WHICH THE GROUP TOOK SUPPLIES TO BOTH SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS. THEY LEFT CHAMPAIGN LOADED DOWN WITH CALCULATORS , PENS , PENCILS , TSHIRTS AND VARIOUS TOILET ARTICLES SUCH AS SOAP , SHAMPOO , DEODORANT , AND TOOTHPASTE. EVERYWHERE THE GROUP WENT THEY WERE WELCOMED BY FRIENDLY, GRATEFUL CUBANS . AT ONE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SIX GIRLS AND SEVEN BOYS GATHERED AROUND THE VISITORS HOLDING VARIOUS PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS. SUDDENLY THE GIRLS BROKE INTO SONG AND DANCE WHILE THE BOYS PROVIDED THE RHYTHM. CUBA WAS INDEED A CULTURE SHOCK FOR EVERYONE BECAUSE THE ECONOMY THERE IS SO DEPRESSED, BUT THE TRIP WAS A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE WHO WENT , AND GAVE THEM A NEW APPRECIATION FOR THE UNITED STATES .

onorsoav HONORS DAY IS HELD TO RECOGNIZE THE GRADUATING SENIORS . IT WAS HELD ON MAY 15TH , 2001 . ANNE JOHNSTON , WIFE OF SEELY JOHNSTON , SPOKE IN HIS PLACE FOR THE FIRST TIME . WHEN SHE PRESENTED HER SPEECH , SHE RECEIVED A STANDING OVATION . AT HONORS DAY, SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS WERE GIVEN OUT TO THOSE WHO EXCELLED IN INDIVIDUAL ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS. ALSO , SCHOOL CLUBS HONORED EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS. THE STUDENTS THAT ARE RECOGNIZED SHOW THAT BEING MAROONED AT CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL DOESN 'T STOP THEM FROM SWIMMING OUT AND BEING WINNERS.

,

Graduation 2001 GRADUATION WAS HELD ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 30TH , 2001 , FOR CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL'S CLASS OF 2001 . IT IS TRADITION THAT THE CEREMONY BE HELD IN THE GREAT HALL AT KRANNERT CENTER . WHEN THE GUESTS ARRIVED , THE BAND WAS PLAYING . LATER ON , THE CLASS SPEAKERS , ABBY BURGETT AND RYAN SEGOVICH DELIVERED THEIR ADDRESSES . ALTHOUGH THEIR TIME WAS LIMITED , THE SPEECHES WERE WELL RECEIVED BY THE STUDENTS AND THE MEMBERS OF THE AUDIENCE. THE CLASS SELECTED JOSEPH BAUERS , RETIRING HEAD OF THE CENTRAL HIGH ENGLISH DEPARTMENT , TO BE THEIR SPEAKER . MR . BAUERS , TRUE TO HIS REPUTATION , SPOKE WITH HONESTY AND HUMOR ABOUT THE WORLD THAT THE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES WOULD FACE . MR . HANSEN PRESENTED THE CLASS OF 2001 AND THE SUPERINTENDENT ACCEPTED THEM , AND THEN CAME THE MOMENT THAT EVERYONE WAS WAITING FOR , THE PRESENTATION OF DIPLOMAS . EACH STUDENT WALKED ACROSS THE STAGE TO RECEIVE HIS OR HER DIPLOMA, HANDED OUT BY THE BOARD OF EDUCATION. FINALLY, THE GRADUATES WERE READY TO LEAVE KRANNERT CENTER AND MARCH OUT TO THE SOUNDS OF EDWARD EGAN 'S " POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE ." IT WAS THE LAST NIGHT OF BEING MAROONED AT CHS .

Homecoming Spirit HOMECOMING WEEK KICKED OFF ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 1 , '01. STUDENTS AND FACULTY HAD A BLAST DRESSING UP FOR PAJAMA DAY, CLASS COLOR DAY, TWIN DAY, CELEBRITY DAY, AND MAROON AND WHITE DAY. AFTER A FULL WEEK OF FLOAT BUILDING AND SCHOOL SPIRIT , WE HELD OUR BONFIRE ON THURSDAY NIGHT. THE ACTIVITIES ALL LED UP TO THE GAME AND DANCE OVER THE WEEKEND.

Pep RaiiV WHERE CAN A STUDENT YELL HIS HEAD OFF AND NOT BE SENT TO ROOM 1 05? THE

2001 HOMECOMING PEP RALLY! THE PEP RALLY IS KNOWN FOR ITS CLASS COMPETITON GAMES , HOMECOMING FLOAT WINNERS , AND KING AND QUEEN CANDIDATES. THIS YEAR , THE STUDENTS ENJOYED SEEING THE SENIORS WIN THE WHEELBARROW RACE AND MR. DAVIS GET WHIPPED CREAM BALLOONS IN HIS FACE. THIS YEAR 'S PEP RALLY WAS LONGER THAN USUAL BECAUSE WEATHER CANCELLED THE PARADE.

The Game ON A CHILLY EVENING , OCTOBER 5TH , 2001 , THE MAROONS , 3 - 3 , STEPPED ONTO TOMMY STEWART FIELD TO PLAY THE MATTOON GREEN WAVE . THE MADRIGALS KICKED OFF THE GAME W ITH THE SINGING OF THE NATIONAL AN THEM . FOR THE HALF-TIME SHOW, THE PEPETTES PERFORMED AN ORIGINAL DANCE , AND THE BAND MARCHED TO " AFRICA" BY ROBERT W . SMITH . MAURA MURPHY WAS CROWNED HOMECOMING QUEEN ( ARTHUR HUNTER , THE KING , WAS IN THE LOCKER ROOM ). THE MAROONS MUSCLED 190 YARDS FOR THE NIGHT . A TOUCHDOWN AND 98 YARDS WERE FROM #15 , DREW MCMAHON .

r.....--~--___:;;___ _ _ _~--J

THIS GAME WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO THE CENTRAL ALUMNI AND TO THE TEAM HA VING JUST SUFFERED TWO LOSSES . PLUS , CENTRAL LOST TO MATTOON IN THE 1999 HOMECOMING GAME TWO YEARS EARLIER. THE MAROONS WON 27 0 WITH MANY TACKLES AND BIG PLAYS FROM THE WHOLE TEAM , INCLUDING ARTHUR HUNTER .

After Hour ON FRIDAYS AT EITHER 2:20 OR 3: 1 5 , CENTRAL STUDENTS LEAVE THE FRIENDLY CONFINES OF SCHOOL TO START THEIR WEEKEND. ALTHOUGH CHAMPAIGN CANNOT COMPARE TO CHICAGO AND ITS COUNTLESS ACTIVITIES , THERE ARE MANY PLACES TO GO AND THINGS TO DO HERE. WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT OUR DOORSTEP , WE CAN EASILY TAKE PART IN VARIOUS ACTIVITIES ON CAMPUS. PLUS , WITH SO MANY BUSINESSES AND RESTAURANTS AS WELL AS TWO MOVIE THEATERS, THERE ARE PLENTY OF PLACES FOR CENTRAL STUDENTS TO WORK AND HANG OUT.

FRIENDS ARE AN ESSENTIAL PART OF OUR LIVES HERE AT CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL. THEY GIVE US GOOD TIMES AND HELP US THROUGH THE HARD TIMES. THEY HELP WITH SCHOOL WORK AND DATING PROBLEMS. MOST OF ALL, THEY GIVE SUPPORT AS WE ALL GO THROUGH THIS HIGH SCHOOL JOURNEY TOGETHER.

ANYONE WHO HAS A SIBLING AT CENTRAL WOULD SAY THAT IT IS A MIXED BLESSING. SOME OF THE PERKS OF BEING A YOUNGER SIBLING INCLUDE GETTING RIDES TO SCHOOL AND LUNCH , SHARING CLOTHES , AND HAVING SOMEONE TO HELP WITH HOMEWORK. BEING AN OLDER SIBLING HAS ADVANTAGES LIKE HAVING SOMEONE WHO WILL LOOK UP TO YOU , AND ALWAYS HAVING SOMEONE TO VENT FRUSTRATION ON . HAVING A SIBLING AT THE SAME SCHOOL CAN BE ANNOYING AT TIMES. BUT , LATER ON SIBLINGS WILL LOOK BACK ON IT AND APPRECIATE ALL OF THE MEMORIES THEY SHARED AT CENTRAL.

Th latest Island Trends

THIS YEAR AT CENTRAL , STUDENTS SAW ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT TRENDS. GUYS GREW THEIR HAIR LONGER AND WORE IT MESSY. GIRLS WORE SWEATERS THAT WENT DOWN TO THEIR KNEES , AND ANIMAL PRINT AND FUR SHOWED UP EVERYWHERE . GUYS BROUGHT BACK THE TIGHT 80' S SWEATSUITS AND THE BASICS LIKE JEANS , TEESHIRTS , SY./EATERS , AND BASEBALL CAPS ARE ALWAYS IN. ALL IN ALL , THE STU DENTS MAROONED AT CENTRAL ARE LOOKING BETTER THAN EVER.

THANKS TO A GREAT STAFF THIS YEAR!

The goal of the yearbool< staff this year was to give the 2002 Maroon a whole new fool<. We changed layouts, brainstormed for new ideas and really worked for an innovative book. Over the past four years we have seen the difference, opened doors, looked through a l<aleidoscope, and this year we had a completely different experience of being marooned. There are many aspects of Central that can mal<e a student feel marooned: we're all deserted here for four years, our building is surrounded only by houses lil<e an island surrounded only by water, and our equipment (or lack of) can leave us stranded and feeling hopeless. The unreliabilty of the computers has left the yearbool< staff with some frustrating problems, but we worl<ed very hard to get our bool< out and into your hands. We hope that after all of the time put into the creation of this book, you fully enjoy the thrill-ride that the 2001-2002 Maroon takes you on.

September 11, 2001

The dav "our nation sa evil" ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, OUR UNSUSPECTING NATION WITNESSED ONE OF THE MOST HORRIBLE ACTS OF TERRORISM IN HISTORY. IN THE MORNING HOURS OF WHAT SEEMED TO BE A NORMAL DAY, FOUR COMMERCIAL LINERS FLYING OUT OF THE NEW ENGLAND AREA WERE HIJACKED AND SEIZED BY TERRORISTS. AT AROUND 7:45A.M., AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 11, CARRYING 92 PASSENGERS FROM BOSTON TO LOS ANGELES WAS OVERTAKEN AND STEERED BY TERRORISTS INTO THE NORTH TOWER OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER IN NEW YORK CITY. AS THE JET CRASHED INTO THE BUILDING, A HUGE EXPLOSION ERUPTED AS THE JET FUEL WAS IGNITED. MOMENTS LATER, AT 8 :03A.M. UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 175, CARRYING 65 PASSENGERS FROM BOSTON TO LOS ANGELES WAS OVERTAKEN AND STEERED INTO THE SOUTH TOWER OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER, AGAIN CAUSING A HUGE EXPLOSION AND PANIC ACROSS THE NATION. JUST A SHORT TIME LATER, ANOTHER COMMERCIAL JET, AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 77, FROM DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO LOS ANGELES WAS REDIRECTED BY TERRORISTS AND CRASHED INTO THE PENTAGON IN WASHINGTON , D.C. AT 8:40A.M. AT 9:00A.M. ANOTHER JET, THOUGHT TO BE OVERTAKEN BY TERRORISTS, WAS CRASHED INTO THE GROUND NEAR SHANKSVILLE , PENNSYLVANIA. IT IS BELIEVED THAT UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 93 WAS HEADED FOR ANOTHER UNITED STATES LANDMARK, WHEN A GROUP OF EXTREMELY PATRIOTIC AND COURAGEOUS MEN STORMED THE TERRORISTS IN THE COCKPIT AND FORCED THE PLANE INTO THE GROUND, POTENTIALLY SAVING HUNDREDS OF AMERICAN LIVES. THE DEVASTATING ATTACKS AFFECTED AMERICANS GREATLY AS COUNTLESS VIGILS WERE HELD AND FAMILIES SPENT MORE TIME TOGETHER , REALLY APPRECIATIING LIFE AND WHAT IT HAD TO OFFER. MANY AMERICANS VOLUNTEERED TO HELP ALL OF THE VICTIMS OF THE ATTACKS BY DONATING FOOD, CLOTHING, AND ANY OTHER NEEDED EPUIPMENT TO THOSE IN NEED. FIREFIGHTERS, POLICE OFFICERS, AND DOCTORS WERE CALLED INTO NEW YORK CITY FROM ALL OVER THE NEW ENGLAND AREA IN AN ATTEMPT TO SAVE AS MANY LIVES AS POSSIBLE. MANY CHARITY FUNDS WERE SET UP TO ASSIST ALL VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES AND MONEY AND DONATIONS POURED IN. MANY EVENTS ACROSS THE NATION WERE CANCELLED AND POSTPONED OUT OF RESPECT FOR EVERYBODY THAT WAS AFFECTED IN ANY WAY BY THE HORRIBLE ATTACKS. MANY, MANY PEOPLE WERE LOST OR AFFECTED IN SOME WAY BY THIS AWFUL ACT OF TERRORISM THAT MANY COMPARE TO THE BOMBING OF PEARL HARBOR IN 1941. SHORTLY AFTER THE ATTACKS, PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH LAUNCHED THE "WAR ON TERRORISM." IN THE END, AMERICA STOOD STRONG AND UNITED AS WE WORKED TOGETHER TO OVERCOME THE TRAGIC EVENTS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001. AS A TRIBUTE, THE 2002 MAROON STAFF WOULD LIKE TO DEDICATE THIS YEAR'S YEARBOOK TO THE MEMORY OF ALL WHO WERE KILLED OR AFFECTED BY THESE HORRENDOUS ACTS IN ANY WAY.

Sheryl

Hobbs Sheryl Hobbs a favored teacher, a valuable co-worker, and a great friend. Mrs. Hobbs first started at Central High School in 1986 teaching English. In that same year she also took over as the yearbook staff advisor. Mrs. Hobbs has guided the staff and helped produce the past sixteen yearbooks. She has definitely been the back bone of the yearbook staff. Mrs. Hobbs will be retiring at the end of the 2002 school year and we can't express how much we will miss her. Mrs. Hobbs' hard work and dedication is reflected in her teaching, great students, and excellent yearbooks. She is loved by students and staff and Central will not be the same without her. There is no one that we would rather be marooned with than you, Mrs. Hobbs! On behalf of the yearbook staff we would like to dedicate the 2002 Maroon to you.
