STAR WARS: EPISODE IX – THE RISE OF SKYWALKER by Mikey G alo “Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker” director JJ Abrams was given a difficult task: wrap up three trilogies and 42 years of movies with one single film. While there are the expected hiccups and moments that will leave fans divided — namely the movie’s struggle to mesh well with the first six George Lucas-made movies — Abrams and his cast do their jobs well. Adam Driver turns in another strong performance as dark lord Kylo Ren. He plays the role of a troubled villain well, and he has chemistry with every actor sharing the screen. Even when he wears his mask, you can feel his emotions radiating from within. “The Rise of Skywalker” is fast paced and action-packed. There are aerial dogfights, shootouts, and excellent, flowing lightsaber battles with twirls and flourishes more reminiscent of the prequel trilogy than some of the heavier, hard-hitting combat we’ve seen in “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi.” The movie also features incredible effects that allow the characters to do things and go places not previously imagined. Of course, it’s always fun to see old faces. In addition to the regular cast from the Original Trilogy that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing — R2D2, C3PO, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia — there are great cameos from others that we haven’t seen in a while. “The Rise of Skywalker” is a fun, entertaining movie and well worth the trip to the theater.
“~how i’m feeling~” by Lauv by Allison Beatty Singer-songwriter Lauv hit the ground running in 2020, releasing a snippet of his debut album only two days into the new year. The album, entitled “~how i’m feeling~,” will be released in full on March 6 with 21 songs. The portion released Jan. 2, however, has eight songs, which all carry a mellow, sometimes wistful essence. It includes several of Lauv’s most recent hit singles, such as the collaborations “i’m so tired…” featuring Troye Sivan and “Mean It” featuring LANY. Despite this being Lauv’s first album, he has been cranking out singles since 2015 to great success. Spotify tracks him as having 29,728,483 listeners every month, making him the 54th most popular artist in the world. He’s done all this without a full-length album by producing singles, collaborating with other artists, and writing and producing songs for big stars behind the scenes. Lauv has created a very specific sound for himself, characterized by soft electronic beats and a gentle crooning voice. That sound defines these eight songs, threading them together in a way most albums fail to do. Be on the lookout for the full 21-song album on March 6!

he temps outside are sliding around like crazy, up and down, up and down, and it’s anybody’s guess as to what tomorrow will look like, but that’s no reason to stay home! No matter the weather, to wrap up your January, let the cozy music of folk band Tow’rs pull you in. The Arizona-native band will be performing at the Grand Stafford Theater on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 8:30 p.m.
album in 2014, and have been consistently producing fulllength albums every year or two since. Many of the songs on that 2014 album have remained largely popular, even six years later, because their music and lyrics hold up. The down-to-earth dynamic of Tow’rs makes them a fantastic fit for venues both big and small, and their Grand Stafford Theater performance should be no exception.
Tow’rs describes themselves as a folk-rock band, and they use their music as a method of storytelling. Some of their best-known songs are “Vanilla Pines” and “Belly of the Deepest Love,” titles undoubtedly familiar to folk music enthusiasts. The band uses simple and poetic lyrics, many of which contain faith-based sentiments, to connect with their fanbase in a collective yet altogether personal way.
Tow’rs will be at the Grand Stafford Theater on Sunday, Jan. 26. Doors will open at 8 p.m., and the band goes on at 8:30. Tickets can be bought in advance on the Grand Stafford Theater website for $12, or at the door for $15. All tickets for this show are general admission.
Tow’rs currently has four albums on the market, the most recent of which — entitled “New Nostalgia” — was released in Sep. 2019. They released their debut self-titled

YC OONUF E R AE NRCEE by Steven Jordan Freedom is something many of us seek. We might be proud of the freedoms our country or our job affords us, but the founders of the You Are Conference believe that deeper freedom is found somewhere else. For the last five years, the You Are Conference has been held in the BCS area for the benefit of helping women find their freedom in God. If you are a woman of any age and walk of life seeking spiritual growth and freedom, you should give the conference a shot! The story of You Are begins back in 2013. Stephanie Lee, the founder and director of You Are, felt a need to spiritually lead other women in Christian community. According to the conference website, “she began by bringing a small group of women together to pray for [the] community and direction for how this gathering could look.” As this small group of women met, worshipped and prayed together, what would become the You Are Conference began to crystallize. The next year, the first You Are Conference was launched and “abundantly exceeded the team's expectations.” Its success galvanized the team, who felt called to continue the conference for later years. This year’s You Are Conference takes place the weekend of Jan. 24-25 at Central Baptist Church in College Station. There will be a packed schedule of worship and teaching sessions, which are led by passionate professionals dedicated to personal and spiritual growth. Worship during the weekend will be led by Houston-based singer/songwriter Lizi Bailey, who is driven to lead “people in an authentic, corporate response to reality of who God is.” The emcees for the conference will be Austin-based preacher, teacher, writer, and counselor Jennifer Cumberbatch and Meredith Perryman, the Teaching Director for the BCS Community Bible Study Women’s Day Class.

SEAD GALLERY EXHIBIT: "NATURE'S BRILLIANCE" by Dylan Allen
W
ith our rapidly changing weather, the expression, “Seasons come, seasons go” has a bit of a different meaning here in Texas, especially in the Brazos Valley. One could even exaggerate and say that in Aggieland, we only have two: summer and football season. But elsewhere in our great state, the seasons are more clearly defined, and our state parks are some of the best places to view these changes. Finding inspiration from observing the seasons in Texas’ state parks, artist Hailey Herrera shares her vision with us in her beautifully crafted and curated exhibit, “Nature’s Brilliance: Contemplations of Color and Seasons” at the SEAD gallery in Bryan from Jan. 16-Mar. 19. Herrera’s subject matter should come as no surprise, due to her involvement with Texas state parks. The year 2023 will mark the centennial of the Texas Parks System, so multiple entities have teamed up to host a project commemorating the park system in a series of art works. For now, the project is being called “The Art of Texas Parks” and is the result of a collaboration between The Meadow Center for Water and the Environment, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas A&M University Press, and the Bullock Texas State History Museum. Along with a group of another 29 Texas artists who have received official appointment as “Centennial Painters” by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Herrera and the others serve the project by documenting and interpreting a broad range of our state parks in their art. These 30 individual artists will create pieces which will be curated and debuted at the State Capital and the Bullock Museum in Austin in early 2023. The artwork from the project will be reimagined into a book published by Texas A&M University Press which will accompany the 2023 exhibit. As always, this SEAD Gallery exhibit will open with a reception on Jan. 16 with an evening of art, wine, and hors-d’oeuvres.
Herrera and 29 others were appointed "Centennial Painters" by The Texas Parks and Wildlife Deparment.
