MAGIC: MANASTRIKE Platform: iOS, Android Cost: Free (in-app purchases) by Steven Jordan

Magic: ManaStrike, Netmarble’s latest mobile game based on Wizards of Coast’s unbelievably successful Magic: The Gathering products, is a player-vs-player strategy game based on the characters and lore from the Magic universe. True to its trading card game roots, you will build a small deck of cards representing creatures and spells that you can use throughout the game. The good news is that ManaStrike nails the classic themes of of Magic decks: if you play a green deck, you will summon hordes of giant beasts to trample your enemies underfoot, while if you play red, you will recklessly smash into your opponents right out of the gate. The bad news is that, while the game is free-toplay, it pigeonholes you into spending real money on in-game products through microtransactions. In all, Magic: ManaStrike is a worthy addition to the Magic series of products if you’re looking for some quick games to play during your day.

THE MASTER by Rhett Artis

For drifting alcoholic WWII Navy veteran Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), the one thing missing from his life is some sort of structure and discipline. But after drunkenly stumbling onto a boat captained by cult leader and radical author Lancaster Dodd (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), Quell finds that plus much more. Although the movie is a bit of a slow-burner that spans almost two and a half hours, Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” is brimming with beautiful landscape settings, colorful shots, and a dark plot sure to keep your eyes glued to the screen for its entire duration. Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman give performances of a lifetime, showing all why they received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor and Best Actor in a Supporting Role, respectively. Log in to Netflix to see this recently added cinematic masterpiece before it’s gone.

“High Road” by Kesha by Anna Villalobos Released Jan. 31 of this year, ar tist Kesha comes back again to the music scene with “High Road,” her four th album. Haven’t given it a listen? You’re missing out - her solo sounds are remarkably different from her pop hits of the beginning of the decade. Still playing with her roots in pop with ballads, dance, and rap, “High Roads” encompasses themes of being forever young, embracing the wild moments of life, and missed oppor tunities. Kesha focuses on living in the moment despite wondering about the past. Filled with for-sure hits, Kesha proves herself once again as a seasoned crooner on this album. Songs like the hear t-wrenching “Cowboy Blues” contrasts the beats in the power anthem “Raising Hell.” On “High Road” she boldly spreads her wings as an ar tist, with a vocal range that is raw, power ful, and vulnerable.

Shane Cooley and the Midnight Girls: Friday, Feb. 14, 9:00 p.m. til midnight

After a romantic dinner on Friday, head on over to 4 Star’s Valentine’s Day party with Shane Cooley and the Midnight Girls for an evening of dancing — complete with complimentary champagne, roses, and even a photo booth. Singer-songwriter Cooley, who is active in the Austin music scene, is a veteran artist with several albums and EPs under his belt. His best-known album is “Kings Highway,” which was released in 2015. It can be described as a mix of country music, folk, and Americana. “Leave this Place” is a particularly catchy song off the album that showcases Cooley’s ability to combine a great, upbeat melody with thoughtful lyrics. He is particularly versatile as a writer. This is perhaps best seen in his song “She Comes Calling,” which he wrote with Virginia musician Paulo Franco in 2013. It is a deep, haunting song that the listener is sure to remember. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show begins at 9 p.m.

Hailed as “festival fixtures” for state fairs and music festivals, the brothers have crossed the U.S. many times, per forming their unique blend of music that moves you. he young, uber-talented country music star Parker album, “Probably Wrong,” was another major success that McCollum is coming to Hurricane Harry’s and will cemented his status as one of today’s hottest stars. play with guest Grant Gilbert on Feb. 14 and Hayden Baker on Feb. 15. McCollum can do it all. He sings, writes his own lyrics and can play multiple instruments. It is hard not to get McCollum is arguably one of the most popular musicians taken in by his upbeat and catchy songs, but his talents in today ’s country music scene. GOD, SCIENCE, & EVOLUTION b yA n n a V i l l a l o b o s

hat is your purpose? Where did we come from? On Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. at Rudder Theatre, Dr. S. Joshua Swamidass of Washington University at St. Louis’ Dept. of Pathology and Immunology and Dr. Michael J. Behe of Lehigh University’s Dept. of Biological Sciences will be debating these questions at the Veritas Forum 2020 event “God And/Or Evolution?” While both agree science and faith are non-conflicting, they disagree on how to view God's activity through the lens of science. The Veritas Forum is an event that has taken place at over 200 universities in the US and Europe since 1992. The idea is to engage campuses with discussions on the “big questions of life,” with the purpose of showing that the Christian worldview has something to say about these big questions — and to address that from an academic standpoint. “ There’s a stereotype out there that Christians and their biology classes don’t mix,” says Dr. Micah J. Green, a faculty member of the Chemical Engineering department at Texas A&M, “What’s interesting,” Green says, “is that while Swamidass and Behe are both Christians, they view the science of God’s role in the development of biological life very differently.”

Dr. Swamidass views life like Mount Everest: unlike any human design and without clear evidence that it required more than natural laws. Dr. Behe views biology like Mount Rushmore, with clear-cut evidence that a mind brought it into existence. Dr. Green says that the purpose of this Veritas forum is to provide a place to think through these deeper issues. For Christians who attend, he suggests they think about how God is involved in the development of biological life. For those who are not of the Christian faith, Green hopes they realize that the question of “where did we come from?” is relevant to everyone.

f learning about space while enjoying a beer sounds like the per fec t way to spend a Wednesday night, check out this month’s Astronomy on Tap! This monthly event is held at the Grand Stafford Theater and will feature guest speakers Addy Evans and Jacqueline Antwi-Danso, who are graduate students at Texas A&M. Astronomy on Tap originated in New York City and made its way across the U.S., arriving in Br yan in April 2018. I ts widespread success proves that you don’t have to be in a lec ture hall to learn about the wonders of the universe. Astronomy on Tap #22 is a two -hour event consisting of Evans giving a presentation on the histor y of non-Western astronomy and Antwi-Danso discussing the past, present and future of Astronomy in several African countries. Along with the two speakers, guests can also take place in trivia with the chance to win fun prizes and have the oppor tunity to hang out with local astronomers. The event star ts at 7 p.m. on Feb. 19, and is free and open to all ages. For anyone interested in getting there early, the bar opens at 6 p.m., and as always, you have to be 21 to drink . THE PLAY THAT GOES

lurring the lines between Sherlock Holmes and Monty Python, the latest Broadway meta-comedy, “The Play That Goes Wrong,” has astounded audiences with its cleverness and nostalgic flare. Called “Hilarious! Non-stop pandemonium” by Entertainment Weekly and “Broadway’s funniest and longest-running play” by the New York Post, this Tony-winning play will be bringing its chaotic energy to Rudder Auditorium on Feb. 18 and 19. “The Play That Goes Wrong” follows the shenanigans of the Cornley University Drama Society as they attempt to create a production of a 1920s murder mystery drama. As you might have guessed from the title, this is not as easy a feat as it sounds, with everything that could go wrong...going wrong. Despite these hindrances, the actors of the Cornley University Drama Society bravely push through their adversities as they try to get to the end of the play. The Lyceum Theatre was the first to show “The Play that Goes Wrong” in April 2017. The show ran all the way until January 2019, playing 27 previews and 745 performances and claiming the 2nd spot for the longest running show in the theatre’s history. “The Play That Goes Wrong” is being brought to College Station by MSC OPAS and will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 18 as well as Wednesday, Feb. 19, both at 7:30 p.m. The comedic drama is written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields of Mischief Theatre Company and has a runtime of 2 hours and 5 minutes with a 20 minute intermission. Tickets are available online or at the MSC Box Office.

ebruary tends to have a reputation as the month of love, so why not celebrate in a unique way with a Daddy Daughter Date Night put on by Stella Southern Cafe? This event has a special limited menu for the evening to suit both daddy and daughter taste buds, and it will take place on Friday, Feb. 21 with various time slots for dinner. Come down to Stella and share a special evening with your daddy or daughter! Stella Southern Cafe opened in July 2018 and has made its mark on Bryan College Station ever since. Founded by native Texan Michael Lair, who attended the Culinary Institute of the Arts in New York, the restaurant strives to provide guests with a taste of good ol’ southern home cooking. The menu they’ve created for Daddy Daughter Date Night features such

goodies for dads as Chicken and French toast, Oxford Burgers, or Southern Benedict, and for daughters, half orders of kid friendly delectables like Cookies & Cream French Toast, a Kid’s Egg Plate, or a Kid’s Bonut, an irresistible biscuit-donut concoction. The meal also includes beverage choices of coffee, iced tea and sodas. Dads and daughters of any age are welcome to come celebrate together, but the event and menu were designed with daughters age 12 or younger in mind. Tickets cost $20 per person and can be bought for one of three time slots, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets do need to be purchased in advance for this event, so be sure to check out their Facebook page soon if you’re interested.
