BYTE Platform: iOS, Android Cost: Free (in-app purchases) by Allison Beatty

Within the past decade, short, ten-seconds-or-less video clips rose to the forefront of internet humor. The short-form video craze took off with Vine, migrated to TikTok, and is now in its latest form with Byte, the new app that’s taking social media by storm. Released on Jan. 24, Byte allows its users to create and upload sixsecond videos, much like Vine before the app was shut down. It was created by some of the same people who originally created Vine, and it functions in much the same way. Users create videos of anything: dancing, singing, comedy, you name it, and other users follow and like the “bytes” that resonate with them most. It’s still a very new app undergoing frequent changes, but the general concept is the same. Byte is a fun app, with different “channels” you can browse to cater to your taste. Many social media stars have been flocking to the app, so despite its recent release, it’s already chock full of interesting content. Byte can be downloaded for free on iOS and Android.

APOSTLE by Rhett Artis

“Apostle” is a two hour thrill ride of a horror movie, featuring a pagan cult on a remote island whose members live solely off the land. Opening shots depicting lush forests, grazing livestock and smiling villagers paint a picture of abundance. The movie takes a turn when that abundance is challenged. Today, as our own resources become scarce, “Apostle” speaks to our worst fears — the kind outside the realm of blood and gore — such as, what happens when the stability of a community is tested? Toss in a couple of corrupt priests and an evil, possessed henchman and you’ve got a flick that leaves you shaking in your boots. When asked what inspired the plot of the movie, “Apostle” director Gareth Evans stated that he wanted the plot to serve as a representation of how the faith and religion of today push political agendas and influence policies. If you’re in the mood for something a little more than your run-of-the-mill nail-biter, check out “Apostle” on Netflix.

“MANIC” by Halsey by Anna Villalobos The sounds of pop-singer Halsey ’s new album don’t disappoint. Released on Jan. 17, this is more than a fresh take on pop. Her third album comes with echoes of desire and independence, paired with flir ty, teasing sounds. Featured on the album is the smash hit “ Without Me,” which topped the char t, so it ’s bound to reel you in. She doesn’t sing alone, as Dominic Fike, Alanis Morissette, and Suga of BTS are also featured. Halsey described them as “people who really represent different par ts of my psyche.” Not into pop? This album doesn’t just have those “cookie -cutter pop songs” you’re tired of singing along to on the way to work. There’s nothing repetitive about this new album - each track surprises you with a new expression. It also samples genres such as hip-hop, rock, and countr y. It ’s definitely a busy album, but it will give you a taste of ever ything.

GRAND STAFFORD THEATER

he Grand Stafford Theater, BCS’s staple venue, has some great shows lined up for audiences this weekend. If you’re interested in an eclectic mix of genres and styles, Brazos Valley All Star Band will be headlining the all-ages First Friday show on Feb. 7; then, on Feb. 8, you will be treated to indie bands Brother Moses and Antique Gardens.

by local favorites Antique Gardens. Founded back in 2014 by four friends from the University of Arkansas, Brother Moses got their start by recording their first EP in a literal garage in a tiny house off the edge of campus. Since then, their career has taken off: they’ve earned the help of prestigious record producers and played shows all across the country.

First of all, on Feb. 7, the Grand Stafford Theater will be hosting their famous First Friday concert. The theater’s own house band, Brazos Valley All Star Band, will be treating those lucky attendees with their classic, ‘allstar’ mix of blues, r&b, rock and roll, country, soul and jazz covers. Made up of some of the best musicians in the Brazos Valley, these four musicians have played and toured with big names such as Ruthie Foster, The Big Apple Trio, The Bellamy Brothers, and Sheryl Crow. Now united, these all stars are sure to knock your socks off! As always, the First Friday concerts are open to all ages and entry is absolutely free!

Openers Antique Gardens are a local BCS indie rock favorite. Formed by singer/songwriter/bassist Josh Willis after his previous band parted ways, Antique Gardens’ songs, inspired by many cult classic indie rock bands from the ‘90s, are full of honesty, intimacy, and the type of homebred creativity that can only come from a threepiece rock band. If you’re interested in checking out Brother Moses and Antique Gardens, tickets are $8.00 in advance and $10.00 at the venue, and the doors open at 8:00 p.m.

In the end, you know that the Grand Stafford Theater is familiar to hosting great events in a wonderfully aesthetic Next, after you’ve had the chance to get some shut-eye, atmosphere, so if you have the time this weekend, head to you can come back the very next day, Feb. 8, to see indie Downtown Bryan for an eclectic mix of music from the Brazos band Brother Moses perform with an opening set followed Valley All Star Band, Brother Moses, and Antique Gardens. COLLEGE STATION WELCOMES

FOREIGNER by D ylan Allen

Y

ou might’ve heard about them from stories of how they electrified audiences, bringing tears to eyes and lighters to the skies with their arena-rock anthems. You might’ve even been in that audience that was invigorated by the iconic guitar solos emitting from the fingers of Mick Jones. Whether it was a debut album, greatest hits album, classic rock radio, or even Guitar Hero, most have heard about the hit-making jukebox heroes called Foreigner. This week, one of the biggest staples of the 1980s will be bringing their heavy rock/R&B fusion musicianship to College Station on February 11. Foreigner took the music industry by storm with their debut album in 1977 that featured the timeless hit, “Cold as Ice.” In their heyday, Foreigner was playing on just about every set of speakers you could find, receiving 10 multi-platinum albums and 16 Top 30 radio hits. Flash forward to today, and you’ll find “Waiting For A Girl Like You” featured in the latest season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and Foreigner on the list of Business Insider’s Top 50 Best Selling Music Artists of All Time in 2017 and inside the top 10 artists on classic rock radio in 2019. These days, Foreigner stays busy playing shows that may not be exactly the same as those in the 80s but provide that same feeling and energy. “Certain things haven’t changed at all, and that’s the energy between the band and crowd,” says bassist Jeff Pilson. A member of the band since 2004, Pilson says that despite the exponential change in the music industry, Foreigner has still managed to find their place in the modern environment of music streaming due to their loyal fanbase. “With amazing fans,” Pilson says, “the interaction that happens during the show really makes the experience more than just playing a song.”

10 MAROON WEEKLY // Feb. 05, 2020 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM

As many chances as they get, Foreigner now performs their hit, “I Want to Know What Love Is” with a local high school choir. The band donates $500 to the choir for appearing with them and the choir sells Foreigner CDs at the concert to raise money for The Grammy Foundation, the band’s charity partner. Both Foreigner and The Grammy Foundation are passionate about helping to keep music education available to students as part of the core curriculum in high schools throughout North America. “We’re trying to help school music funding,” Pilson says. “When there’s budget crises almost everywhere, one of the first things to go are the music programs, and that’s a real drag.” With philanthropic intent and their classic 80s flare, Foreigner will be performing at Rudder Auditorium on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Albums by the band, including their latest live album, “Double Vision: Then and Now,” will be available for purchase at the event.

For more information on the show and how to get tickets, visit the MSC Box Office website, or call (979)-845-1234.

usic is wonderfully ubiquitous in the Brazos Valley. Everywhere you go, from bars to coffee shops to parks, you’ll find concerts on the weekends. While proud Texan culture means that country music and rock and roll can be found pretty much anywhere, it can be difficult to branch out if you have the desire for something else. Here is where Texas A&M’s 47th season of OPAS comes in, inviting you to A Cappella Live, an energetic festival celebrating modern a cappella music taking place on Thursday, Feb. 13, in Rudder Auditorium. First off, you know this will be a stellar show because it’s arranged by Deke Sharon, producer of the “Pitch Perfect” trilogy and “The Sing-Off.” Your second clue is that the performers in A Cappella Live are truly a who’s who of the a cappella world, beginning with the Grammy AwardNominated Committed, a group of five young men from Nashville. Way back in 2010, they won first place on NBC’s musical competition show, “The Sing-Off ” with their now classic version of Queen’s “We Are the Champions.” Their a cappella career has only taken off from there with two album releases, a self titled album released in 2011 and a Christmas EP released in 2014.

career has similarly skyrocketed after appearing in the hit movie “Pitch Perfect 2” and becoming a viral sensation after their many appearances on James Corden’s “Late Late Show.” Their unique blend of pop, hip-hop, and 90s sentimentality is sure to delight audiences in College Station! After that, Women of the World is a group formed of four female musicians from the four corners of the earth who make music that crosses cultures while exploring the everyday lives of women everywhere. They have sung songs in 34 different languages and believe that through their music, they can promote peace, wisdom, joy, and tolerance. Lastly, you will be treated to a performance from Blake Lewis, the American Idol runner up in 2007. His signature sound back then, “blending beatboxing, sound effects, vocal scratching and original arrangements,” has transferred to his solo career swimmingly, and he has released several major-label albums from his 2007 debut, “A.D.D. (Audio Day Dream)” to “Portrait of a Chameleon” released in 2014.

It’s sure to be an energetic, unique night of music from some of the most talented a cappella performers from all across the world. WE SHALL OVERCOME by Dylan Allen

D

r. Martin Luther King Jr.’s trailblazing activism and way with words has rippled throughout the world and influenced every aspect of our culture. Inspired by the philosophy of Dr. King, multi-genre recording artist Damien Sneed has created a musical road map through the development of African American music in “We Shall Overcome: A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”, coming to BCS on Feb. 7, 2020. Part of MSC OPAS’s 47th season, “We Shall Overcome” is a joyous celebration of music by African Americans that ranges across musical traditions. The production showcases a mix of traditional gospel, modern gospel, classical, jazz, and Broadway from artists such as Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, along with traditional spirituals and music from “The Wiz.”

16 MAROON WEEKLY // Feb. 05, 2020 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM

Sneed’s standout knowledge of each genre allows audiences to experience many different musical ar t forms in just one performance without a feeling of disjointedness. By combining the music with King’s voice reading from his speeches, Sneed achieves an inspiring and moving por trayal of the African American experience. Sneed got his start as a music director and conductor working with choirs from his local church in Augusta, GA. Thus it’s only fitting that accompanying his ensemble of talented multi-genre vocalists and instrumentalists will be two local chorus groups, TAMU’s Voices of Praise and the Prairie View A&M University Choir. Sneed finds it significant that he is joined by community choral groups, as it is representative of the construct of community that Dr. King stood for. Join MSC OPAS on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Rudder Auditorium at Texas A&M. Tickets are $10 for all area students, $20 for adults, and are on sale now at the MSC Box Office and online. Parking is available in University Center Garage and Cain Garage but is not included with your ticket.

THE PASSION OF

ST. THOMAS AT AVPA by Anna Villalobos

R

eimagine history through theatre! Artistic director and composer Garrett Fisher presents an insight into history with “The Passion of St. Thomas More,” a music-theater performance presented by the Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts at Texas A&M University on Feb. 6. Garrett Fisher is an acclaimed artist who produces not only operas and music-theatre, but multimedia and film as well. This performance is an interpretation of St. Thomas More’s rejection of King Henry VIII, highlighting and navigating More’s upholding of Papal Supremacy and refusing the validity of the king’s second marriage. With somber instrumentals, haunting vocals, and elaborate use of headwear and masks, this is a way to experience theatre in a new, unique way. A delight not only for the eyes but also the ears, this enchanting meditation of history has been performed across the world. Focusing on the daunting decision More makes and the consequences of his choice, the Fisher Ensemble brings to life a piece of history, embedding it into today’s culture and the Bryan/College Station community. “The Passion of Saint Thomas More” is on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church on George Bush Drive. To find out how to purchase tickets, or to learn more about this event, call (979) 845-1234 or email avpa@tamu.edu.

BVSO PRESENTS BROBERG & BEETHOVEN by Allis on Beatty

T

his year, musicians and non-musicians alike will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of classical composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Born in 1770, Beethoven had such an impact on the music sphere that he has now become a household name. In an effort to honor the famous composer, the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra is putting on a performance of his music, featuring celebrated pianist Kenny Broberg. The concert will take place on Sunday, Feb. 9 in Texas A&M’s Rudder Theatre at 5 p.m. Like many other classical composers, Beethoven’s talent was quite prominent even from a young age. By the age of seven, he was performing publicly, and the rest is history. The two pieces to be performed on Feb. 9 are generally known as his “Pastoral Symphony” and “Emperor Concerto,” the last piano concerto Beethoven ever completed. Broberg will be interpreting the concerto himself, and given his propensity to win awards for his piano skills — including the Cliburn Silver Medal — it is bound to be spectacular. The non-profit Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra exists to promote the performing arts and performing arts literacy in the community. If you are a Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra subscription holder, don’t miss Ann Thompson’s talk an hour before the performance on Beethoven’s life and music and a social hour at Napa Flats following the concert. Tickets cost $45, and can be purchased through the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra or through the Memorial Student Center Box Office.
