ARCHERO Platform: iOS, Android Cost: Free (in-app purchases) by Steven Jordan

Archero is a simple and fun archery-based mobile game for iOS and Android devices. Developed last year by publisher Habby, Archero offers replayability from a few different factors. First of all, the controls are simple; you control your archer with a single button, and every time you stop moving, your character shoots at your enemies. While this mechanic sounds like it might get boring, this is actually one of Archero’s strongest aspects. The game also randomizes its short levels, so it guarantees that every time you start over, you will have a new experience. The one downside to Archero is that it only lets you play a short number of levels before you have to turn the game off in order to let your energy recharge. Of course, if you want to spend real money, the game will let you recharge immediately. While the pay-to-play model might turn some players away, Archero’s exciting mechanics and ease of control make this an app to check out today.

DOLITTLE by Allis on Beatty

The fictional character of Dr. Dolittle has been charming audiences for decades now, and that trend continues in the 2020 adaptation, simply entitled “Dolittle.” Robert Downey Jr. stars as the titular doctor, gifted with a knack for both animal languages and medical skills. These talents come to his aid time and time again as he voyages through the film, surrounded by a star-studded animal voice cast. With the likes of Emma Thompson, Octavia Spencer and Rami Malek, the animals come to life in a hilarious and genuine way. The human cast isn’t half bad, either: Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen dissolve into their colorful roles, supporting the disgruntled Downey Jr.’s John Dolittle. With a touching story, an incredible cast, and creative solutions to problems, the movie keeps its audience entertained. Young viewers will love it—and older viewers? While it doesn’t leave you with the impression of a best picture nominee, it is pleasant and cheaply entertaining, and the creative premise of Dr. Dolittle’s animal-centric lifestyle made it unique and not entirely predictable. All in all, it’s cute, it’s colorful, and it does appeal to all ages, making it a decent weekend flick.

“RARE” by Selena Gomez by Anna Villalobos “Why don’t you recognize I’m so rare?” Selena Gomez introduces a personal approach to pop music with her first album since 2015 titled, “Rare.” This album, which is her third solo album, debuted with her hit single, “Lose You to Love Me.” The album illustrates what Gomez described as her diary from the past few years, and narrates a story of newfound identity, love, and loss. “It’s the most honest music I’ve ever made,” she expressed on Twitter, “I can’t wait for you to hear my heart.” Recorded between 2016 and 2019, it is deeply personal. It has a unique artistic touch, as even the artwork for this album are pictures taken by her best friends. The sound of this album echoes rhythms and sounds not heard in her past albums. The album reveals a vulnerable humanity and reminds listeners of the magic found in memories and forgotten feelings. Raw and impactful, this album has a blend of genres, including elements of disco, dance, funk, and pop, with emotional and moody vibes. Whether you stream it online or buy it in-store, “Rare” connects you to the heart of the artist and provides a fresh new take on pop music.

On Friday, Jan. 31, Roger Creager will perform with guest Carson Jeffrey. On Saturday, Feb. 1, The Powell Brothers will take the stage with guest Justin Taylor Band. Creager, a Corpus Christi native, is no stranger to the music scene in College Station. Creager quit his job as an accountant in Houston and moved back to College Station after graduating in 1993 to pursue his music career. His songs such as “The Everclear Song” and “Long Way to Mexico,” have a way of making listeners feel an array of emotions from happy to sad. Jeffrey, who is currently a student at Texas A&M, released his first album, “Muchos Sonidos” in September 2019. “Muchos Sonidos” is the Spanish translation for “Many Sounds,” and Jeffrey’s style shows that he represents exactly that. Jeffrey’s music has been influenced by artists such as Randy Rogers and William Clark Green, and he began writing songs in high school and playing live shows in college after realizing he was collecting fans. THE WANNABEES AT THE OLD POST OFFICE by Steven Jordan

W

ith 2020 upon us, the ‘90s are now twenty years in the past. While this might make some of us feel old, the ‘90s are a fun time to look back on, which is why if you live close to Caldwell, you should think about heading to the Old Post Office this Saturday, Feb. 1 for ‘90s night with The Wannabees! Tie a plaid shirt around your waist, brush up on your “Friends” trivia, and get ready to get the full ‘90s experience! The Wannabees is a College Station-based cover band who specializes in all of the grunge artists who dominated pop culture in the early ‘90s: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Radiohead, etc. However, the band also makes it a point to deliver interactive shows to their audience; they will oftentimes have a ‘90s dance mix playing in between sets and have ‘90s trivia contests where the winners walk away with prizes of genuine ‘90s memorabilia.

If you haven’t had the chance to visit the Old Post Office, it is a unique venue for the Brazos Valley. Instead of offering a traditional setup for concerts, the Old Post Office is a more personal, intimate venue that removes the traditional separation between the performers and their audience. In other words, it’s perfect for an interactive event like ‘90s night! If you’re interested in checking out The Wannabees, the music begins at 8:00 p.m. on Feb. 1, and most importantly, there’s no cover charge!

To learn more about the event, check out the Old Post Office’s website.

Snow Moon Dinner

W

hen we think of a full moon, some of us might think of werewolves, having good luck, or even that Pink Floyd album from the 70’s. What most don’t think about is the philosophy of moon gardening that has been around for ages. This is the theory that the gravitational force of a full moon affects the level of groundwater in soil in a way that provides a more efficient harvest. While this is only a theory, Ronin, Downtown Bryan’s famous restaurant and farm, modernizes this concept in their Full Moon Dinners. In the spirit of the upcoming second full moon of winter, called the “snow moon,” Ronin will be hosting a Snow Moon Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 8.

by Dylan Allen

Ronin Farm and Restaurant regularly hosts Full Moon Dinners, featuring a nine course tasting menu, on their farm’s property on one special night during each full moon. The dinners are themed according to seasonal ingredients based on the farm’s harvest that month. The evening begins with a tour of the property, and after a luscious meal in the forest, guests take a walk down a candle-lit path to Ronin’s herb garden for coffee and dessert, set underneath the rising full moon and stars. If dining outdoors doesn’t appeal, you can still experience Ronin’s superb cuisine at Ronin Restaurant in Downtown Bryan, inside the 108-yearold historic Ice House on Main.
