Self-care is a term thrown around so haphazardly these days — so how do we make sure we’re taking enough care of ourselves? That’s where apps like Shine come in. If you’re interested in meditation, gratitude or affirmations but have no idea where to start, let this app guide you through the basics. With features like “check-ins” and “Daily Shine,” the app encourages you to journal one thing per day to be grateful for and to check in on your current mood. While most of their guided meditations are only available to premium subscribers, Shine offers a limited daily selection of free ones to help you focus on a specific goal of your choice — things like getting better sleep, feeling less anxious, being more confident, etc. There’s even a section for the Shine community to publicly post and discuss the ways they live true to themselves and decompress when the going gets tough. In a world where there’s a plethora of apps geared to better your quality of life, check out Shine for its variety and individualized approach.

DRIVING MISS DAISY by Rhett Artis Sometimes it’s hard to live life according to your own rules, but Netflix’s latest film addition is here to show us the beauty that can result when you go against the grain and follow your heart. Bruce Beresford’s “Driving Miss Daisy” was recently added to Netflix, and it has quickly climbed its way to the “Popular” list, just in time for Black History Month. Set in the mid 1960s, “Driving Miss Daisy” follows the rocky but steadfast friendship between Jewish widow Daisy Werthan (Jessica Tandy) and African American chauffeur Hoke Colburn (Morgan Freeman). Filled with shots of the southern backroads and platefuls of fried chicken, okra, tall glasses of sweet tea and buttered biscuits, “Driving Miss Daisy” paints a vivid image of life in the American South during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. In just under two hours, Bruce Beresford builds a heartwarming relationship between two of the most unlikely characters. You won’t be able to look away as Miss Daisy and Hoke learn what it truly means to put aside one’s differences to change for the better and challenge the narrative of the times. Prepare to cry, laugh and be inspired by this classic film while it makes its inaugural run on everyone’s favorite streaming platform.

“The Slow Rush” by Tame Impala by Dylan Allen Five years after the breakthrough album “Currents,” Aussie Kevin Parker contemplates fame and the passage of time on his psychedelic-disco-rock fourth LP, “The Slow Rush.” Referred to more famously as Tame Impala, Parker’s music project seems to bring something new to every track on this latest album. Not being intimidated by the radio-friendly, 3-minute track length, “The Slow Rush” also features songs averaging 5 minutes each. Obviously, despite a recent surge in popularity, the Tame Impala project knows how to stay true to roots while simultaneously taking musical risks. The album gives listeners stapled synthesizers and dreamy vocal falsetto as well as new groovy beats and a fresh lyrical theme. The record’s dizzying opener, “One More Year,” centers around a reverberating choir that repeats the title on a loop while Parker addresses the concept of time and living in spite of time’s limiting factors. From there, the album wears influences on its sleeve with the Zeppelin-esque “Posthumous Forgiveness,” the Brazilian samba of “Tomorrow’s Dust,” and the glossy track “It Might Be Time,” which sounds like it’s straight from a Supertramp project. “The Slow Rush” offers thoughtful compositions as Kevin Parker cements his place as music’s new psychedelia king.

THIS WEEKEND AT 4 STAR BRENHAM by Steven Jordan

T

he 4 Star Concert and Dance Hall is one of Brenham’s premier venues, and they have a great slate of shows coming up this week: Sam Murski on Feb. 27, Saints Eleven on Feb. 28 and Wade Strother and the Renegades on Feb. 29. First of all, tomorrow, February 27, 4 Star is continuing its tradition of hosting great, free shows by having Sam Murski play an all acoustic set for you. If you’re familiar with this local favorite, you know what to expect! The show starts at 7 p.m. on the Sidebar Stage. Be sure to register for this show on the 4 Star website.

Mason Marek will be opening for them at 8 p.m. If you’re interested in checking this show out, tickets are 5-10 dollars and can be purchased from 4 Star’s website. Influenced by everything from classic rock and roll artists like Jerry Lee Lewis to gospel music, Strothers and his band play a style of Texan honkey tonk that keeps your boots scooting by mixing their own original pieces with dozens of expertly-performed covers. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show begins at 9 p.m. Tickets range from 5-10 dollars. If you’re interested in checking this performance out, you can check out 4 Star’s website.

Next, this Friday, February 28 from 8-11 p.m. on 4 Star’s Concert Hall stage, you’ll have the chance to check out Saints Eleven, the Dallas-based Red Dirt country band. Led by Jeff Grossman, Saints Eleven has a recognizable style to those familiar with Texas country bands, but this is likely why they have three best-selling albums, a 4 Star has a consistently exciting schedule of events, so if you’re dozen charting singles and regular tour dates with Texan legends. in the area, make sure to check in from time to time to see what’s Saints Eleven is famous for energetic, exciting live performances. going on!

SWING INTO HISTORY AT THE

A

merican culture during the years of World War II — both with film and, yes, music — was driven by a sense collective unity against some pretty overwhelming odds. However, aside from the many famous images that have become emblems of the time, one other cultural artifact still defines the war years for many

people to this day: swing music. This is something the curators of the Museum of The American GI, located right outside of College Station, understand well, which is why they are hosting Swing into History, an event celebrating the music and culture of the United States during the 1940s this upcoming Saturday, Feb. 29, from 7 p.m. - 1 a.m. Co-hosted by Texas Intercollegiate Swing Battle, Swing into History will have a packed schedule of events for you. Beginner lessons will dominate the first hour of the event, and multiple sets of live music will take over the next few. Aside from social dancing in front of relevant historical artifacts from the war years like the museum’s Sherman and Chaffee tanks, you will also be treated to performances from state wide swing dance organizations as well as a competition between high level swing dancers as they “battle it out in a mix & match competition.” For an additional fee, you can also check out the lounge area for hor d'oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages! This is sure to be a unique experience for all audiences! You don’t need a partner or to dress up in 40s style unless you care to, but be sure not to miss this chance to view America’s cultural past through well-preserved historical relics all while enjoying yourself on the dance floor. Tickets are $15.00 for students and $20.00 for adults, though if you want to relax in the VIP lounge, you’ll have to pay just a little bit more.
