KILLER INSIDE: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez
by D ylan Allen An exploration of the world of football, the justice system, sexuality, sustainability of players, and the tragedy of Aaron Hernandez, “Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez” is a three-part examination of the 2013 murder and the man behind it. The documentary entails loads of details about his upbringing and how it affected his roles in the crimes committed. Born and raised in Bristol, Connecticut, Aaron Hernandez was one of the most promising young football players of his time. His talent accelerated him past his peers in high school, and even at his top tier college at the University of Florida. At 20, Hernandez was drafted into the National Football League by his hometown team, the New England Patriots. He made a name for himself by having the perfect strength and hands of a dual-threat tight end, as well as one of Tom Brady’s favorite targets. However, everything came to a screeching end after Hernandez was convicted for one of the most infamous murder cases involving an athlete since OJ Simpson. Fresh off a five-year, $40 million contract, Hernandez became involved in the killing of Odin Lloyd. The trials of the murder uncovered an entire universe of secrets of one of NFL’s rising stars who was living a dangerous second life. Stream this recently added documentary on Netflix and gain a new understanding on the life of Aaron Hernandez.

GRAND STAFFORD THEATER: Grady Spencer and the Work with Tylar Bryant
T
his weekend will feature several exciting shows, and the Grand Stafford Theater will not be left out of the mix when Grady Spencer and the Work perform with Tylar Bryant on Friday, Feb. 21, at 8 p.m. Grady Spencer and the Work is quite a draw. The group was founded with humble beginnings on the stage of Paradox Church in Ft. Worth, Texas. Just starting out, its members self-recorded and self-produced their first album, “Sleep,” in 2013. The band’s second album, “ The Line Between,” which was released in 2016, was by all accounts a major success and really put the band on the map. The album received both critical and popular success, and, most notably, it led to a huge increase in the group’s audience on music streaming platforms.

T
he band describes its music like its band members “honest, good-timing, with a nod to blue-collar roots.” It’s hard to peg their music into any one category. Some of their songs are smooth, easy listening that seem to feature an interesting yet satisfying fusion of the blues and Americana. Others are more reminiscent of rock and are faster paced with catchy beats and relatable lyrics. Regardless, it is hard not to be caught up in the talent of each individual group member. Expect the band to perform songs from its most recent album, “Celebrate,” which was released in 2018. Tylar Bryant will mesh well with the band. He is a modern country singer-songwriter with a strong, deep voice. He was first inspired to start in country music when he heard the Kenney Chesney album “The Road and the Radio.” This influence shines through in his songs, and it is hard to not to be reminded of some of the biggest country hits when Bryant sings. He released an EP, “Don’t Let Go,” in 2017. Doors will open at 8 p.m. and the show will begin at 8:30 p.m.

A Dallas native and current A&M student, he has always had a passion for music. “It ’s been a great tool to use as an outlet and to connect with other people,” Chambers says. MAROON WEEKLY // Feb. 19, 2020 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM
Chambers’ music sees a broad variety of influences, from the Foo Fighters and John Mayer to Kenny Chesney and Koe Wetzel. He bridges the gap between rock and country with his soulful twang and melodic arrangements. His first single, “Lovin’ You,” has achieved overwhelming success, amassing over 70,000 Spotify streams in a mere six months. While this track takes more of a slow and warm persona, his newest single, titled “Picture,” is more upbeat and dynamic. The lyrics evoke a feeling of nostalgia that resonates with every type of listener. No matter the song, Chambers pulls listeners in with his authentic and relatable lyrics, drawing praise from all types of demographics. Chambers is still in the process of making his full catalogue available online, so be sure to come by The Tap on Feb. 20 at 10 p.m. to hear more of what he has to offer and to experience first-hand why he’ll soon be a wellknown figure on the College Station music scene.

BVSO PRESENTS
"TWO EMILYS" by Rhett Artis
P
oet Emily Dickinson once wrote: “Find ecstasy in life; the mere sense of living is joy enough.” As the first day of spring rapidly approaches, the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra (BVSO) wants to remind everyone that the beauties of life exist in the art of actually living with its presentation of “Two Emilys.” Come and celebrate life on Feb. 23 with the BVSO and irradiant soprano Emily Pulley as they perform a collection of inspiring musical pieces by Mozart and Aaron Copland. With an opening performance of Mozart’s “Symphony No. 25 in G minor, K. 183,” the BVSO aims to introduce and indulge in the “storm and stress[es]” of Mozart’s early musical creativity, written when he was just 17. This will be followed by two beautiful selections of Aaron Copland’s work: “Eight Poems of Emily Dickinson” and “Appalachian Spring.” In “Eight Poems,” Copland utilizes eight of Dickinson’s poems as he musically explores the Dickinsonian themes of death, love, and reaching one’s full potential. With “Two Emilys,” Brazos Valley’s premier symphony orchestra will continue their tradition of sharing the joys of the musical arts with the community. Founded in 1981 after the coalescence of the Brazos Symphony Orchestra and the Bryan-College Station Chamber Orchestra, the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra has made cultural expansion and artistic education their main goal. The performance will be held at Texas A&M’s Rudder Theatre at 5 p.m. For more information about the performance and to purchase tickets, please visit the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra website.
