It’s hard to imagine life without vision. The relationship between those who can and can’t see can be awkward. What’s the best way to help without giving offense? Whether you’re an individual who is visually impaired and needs assistance, or a person who wants to give back, Be My Eyes is for you. Be My Eyes pairs volunteers with visually impaired individuals who need brief assistance. For example, the app opens with a screen showing a single control. Double tapping this button connects the user to a sighted volunteer through a one-way video and two-way audio connection. The volunteer can then view the environment through the other’s rear-facing camera as well as talk to them. For example, if someone needs to know if their milk is expired but can’t read the label, they can simply make a call on the app and a volunteer can assist them. Be My Eyes is also compatible with common accessibility settings for the vision impaired, such as TalkBack, VoiceOver, Select-toSpeak, Magnifier, and Zoom. The app is free to download and use on any iOS and Android devices.

Director Sam Mendes delivers with “1917,” one of the most highly anticipated movies to hit the big screen in recent memory. Set in northern France during World War I, the film focuses on two young British soldiers tasked with traveling through enemy territory to save 1,600 men from walking into certain death. The movie is suspenseful and keeps the audience invested for its entire two-hour runtime. Co-stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman have deservedly received high praise for their roles. There are also welcome appearances from already established actors including Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden and Mark Strong. The film was shot to appear as if the movie is one continuous take. While this is not a new concept, Mendes and cinematographer Roger Deakins execute it flawlessly and allow the film to flow without any hiccups or awkward transitions. The pair previously experimented with this technique when they teamed up for the James Bond thriller “Spectre” in 2015. “1917” received three Golden Globe nominations, winning one for Best Motion Picture – Drama, and another for Best Director – Motion Picture. It has also been nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Cinematography, Directing, Best Picture and Writing-Original Screenplay. “1917” is an exciting movie that certainly lives up to its blockbuster billing and Oscar hype.

“Circles” by Mac Miller by Rhett Artis We’ve all been at a point in our lives where we go through the motions, letting life have its way with us. Mac Miller’s first posthumous album release, “Circles” is a forty-nine minute musical rollercoaster — recorded months before his unfortunate passing in September of 2018 — that showcases the artist’s thoughts on the struggles of constantly living life by “drawin’ circles.” Although the album is quite succinct — just 12 tracks — Miller dives into isolation and his insecurities over lighthearted instrumentals filled with live instrumentation and analog keys. The project’s defining feature isn’t just the production, it’s mainly Miller’s diverse lyrical content that forces you to hang on to every syllable. On the track titled “Good News,” Miller sings about mental confinement, over soft, slow-moving guitar strums juxtaposed with hopeful synth embellishments. This album is a glimpse into the mind of an artist who has touched millions with his music and the legacy he left behind. In a recent Instagram post, the Mac Miller Estate explains that “Circles” is a continuation of Miller’s previously released Grammy-nominated album, “Swimming,” the concept being: “Swimming in Circles.”

eekends are for kicking back and enjoying yourself, and the 4-Star Concert and Dance Hall in Brenham makes sure you have plenty of options. This weekend, they have three great shows lined up for you: Caleb & The Homegrown Tomatoes on Friday, Jan. 24 at 8:00 p.m., the Austin legend Bob Schneider himself on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 9:00 p.m, and Aaron Loesch on Sunday, Jan. 26 from 6:00-10:00 p.m.

from the jam-band Ugly Americans, who opened multiple times for the Dave Matthews Band in the ‘90s to the funk band The Scabs, who made a name for themselves in Austin with their bawdy showtunes. Schneider, however, has had an illustrious solo career as a singer/songwriter for the last two decades, and his most recent album, 2018’s “Blood and Bones” is a stripped down piece full of raw emotion.

First up is the Conroe-based Caleb & The Homegrown Tomatoes. Founded by Caleb Hoelscher, the Homegrown Tomatoes get their name from a Guy Clark quote: “ There’s only two things that money can’t buy, that’s true love and homegrown tomatoes.” This symbolizes the band in and out; Hoelscher built his band with his hometown friends and acquaintances, built his band’s style out of the homegrown styles and genres his band members were interested in, and started performing in hometown venues around Conroe. Their blend of classic rock, altcountry, and Americana with little bits of jazz is sure to please audiences in the Brazos Valley!

Thirdly, join 4 Star for the Sunday Weekend Wind Down with Aaron Loesch on the SideBar Stage from 6-10:00 p.m. And the best part—there’s no cover! Loesch has been in the business for 34 years. His invention of a full drum kit pedal board for the feet allows him to wow audiences as a one man band playing a little of everything from the 40s up. he Tap is the place to be for country music lovers on Thursday, Jan. 23. Tanner Ursey, Lucas Jagneaux and Jordan Nix will be performing from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. as a part of their three live performances in Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Ursey, a singer-songwriter from Prosper, Texas, started his music career in 2013 when he and his brother started a band called “The Ursey Brothers.” In 2017, he began his solo career and has had the chance to perform alongside artists such as Stoney Larue and Casey Donahew. Best known for his songs “Come Back Down” and “Beautiful Lies,” Ursey has a way of communicating love and heartbreak through country music.

Jagneaux, the lead singer of Lucas Jagneaux & The Roadshow, is from Louisiana but is no stranger to Texas country music. In 2019, Lucas competed in the Texas Music Picker’s Songwriter contest and placed first out of five finalists. Nix, who is from Buffalo, Texas, started playing guitar when he was 11 and started songwriting at the age of 15. Originally known as Jordan Nix & The Day Drinkers, Nix’s band shortened the name to Jordan Nix in 2019. Late last year, he competed in the Chilifest Music Festival Battle of the Bands where the band won first place and the opportunity to perform on the main stage at Chilifest this year. These three artists are sure to put on a great show that you won’t want to miss! Tickets can be purchased for $10 at the door.

WINSLOW HOMER IMPRESSIONS OF THE COAST by Rhett Artis

oston illustrator and artist Winslow Homer is considered one of the most distinguished American painters of the 19th Century. His scenic depictions of American coasts and marine subjects have inspired art lovers for over one hundred years. Today, the very same pre- and post- Civil War works that rocketed Homer to the forefront of the American art scene are currently on display in a tasteful exhibition at the Forsyth Galleries in Texas A&M’s Memorial Student Center until Mar. 22.

Homer’s paintings — specifically those associated with the Bahamian island of Nassau — portray people of all different races and skin tones.

MSC OPAS PRESENTS: STEEP CANYON RANGERS

rammy Award-winning band The Steep Canyon Rangers is set to play in College Station, and if you’re a fan of true blue American music at all, you won’t want to miss it. Known for its energetic shows and unique blend of bluegrass, folk rock, pop, and country, this talented group will take the stage at Rudder Theatre on Tuesday, February 4, at 7:30 p.m. The band has roots in North Carolina, where three of the members, then-students at the University of North Carolina, started playing local gigs back in 2000. Things took off from there. The group first achieved recognition in 2006 when it was named the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Emerging Artist of the Year, and found ultimate success in 2013 when they received a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. The Rangers have released 11 studio albums, including “The Long Awaited Album” in 2017, a collaboration with actor, comedian, and renowned banjo player Steve Martin.

The College Station performance will be one of the group’s first of a months-long, international tour that will take the band to the United Kingdom and Ireland. Their star-power will be on full display when, at various stops along the way, they perform with Steve Martin, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Alison Kraus, all highly regarded artists in the Americana/Bluegrass scene. The Steep Canyon Rangers just released their latest single, “California,” on January 10. The song, another collaboration with Steve Martin, showcases all facets of the group’s talents with mellifluous vocals, a catchy beat, excellent instrumentals and a meaningful story. The song has already received positive reviews. The group is also set to release a new album, “Be Still Moses,” on March 6.

ou see them everywhere: a dad on a weekend getaway, a fraternity brother at a live music festival, any person that’s on a cruise. Sometimes it seems that whenever the temperature rises above 75 degrees, we have a tendency to wear our favorite Hawaiian button up. Also referred to as the Aloha shirt, this festive torso wear makes anyone stand out in a crowd due to the intricate patterns and vibrant colors. “Art of the Aloha Shirt: Keoni of Hawaii, 1938-51,” the latest exhibit at the J. Wayne Stark Galleries at Texas A&M University, will be on view from Jan. 28 - Apr. 19 and pays homage to John “Keoni” Meigs and his contributions in making the shirt into what we know and love today.

The origins of the Aloha shirt are, in fact, quite uncertain. However, what is certain is the obvious inspiration drawn from Polynesian tapa cloth, Tahitian sarong-like skirts, and the fabric used to make Japanese kimonos. In the 1930s, as Hawaii became a popular destination for tourists, a need for casual wear and not just work clothes took over the clothing industry in Hawaii. After World War II, tourists fell in love with the shirt and made sure to bring their colorful clothing home after their holidays on the islands. John “Keoni” Meigs is credited as the most innovative merchandiser in the history of the Aloha shirt. Known by others as “Keoni of Hawaii,” his self-taught painting skills attracted early shirt manufacturers in Honolulu. 1938 saw his first designs, based on Polynesian tapa patterns he saw at the Bishop Museum. Keoni went on to create as many as three hundred Aloha shirt designs, and his unique vision for the Aloha shirt has been curated by Dale Hope, a Hawaiian native and author of the book “The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands.” This latest exhibition is on loan to the Stark Gallery from ExhibitsUSA. ExhibitsUSA is a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance with The Texas Commission on the Arts and The National Endowment for the Arts. “Both the Stark and Forsyth Galleries bring in exhibitions from around the country that our students and community wouldn’t otherwise get to see, and admission is always free,” says Molly Painter, University Art Galleries Communications Specialist. “Art of the Aloha Shirt: Keoni of Hawaii, 1938-51“ will be on display at the Stark Galleries in the Memorial Student Center (MSC 1110). Along with the exhibit, the folks at the gallery invite all guests to their Aloha Shirt Luau on Thursday, Mar. 19, from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Stark Galleries. Guests can enjoy refreshments, games, music, and giveaways at the luau, and of course wear their own favorite Hawaiian button-up.

re you a seasoned computer genius? Want to work on your computing skills, but don’t know where to start? Either way, TAMUHack 2020 is the perfect event for you! A 24 hour hacking marathon (or Hackathon) hosted at TAMU, this free event is from Jan. 25-26 and is open to any graduate or undergraduate student 18 years of age or older.

and creating — no experience necessary! This weekend is spent on finding solutions to real problems using technology, software, and hardware in a community. With a built-in support network of mentorship and resources (not to mention free food, wifi, workspace, and swag), you can learn new skills and sharpen old ones.

TAMUHack, a student organization on the A&M campus, promotes innovation beyond the classroom and is one of the largest hackathons in Texas. It is also the A&M leg of Major League Hacking, the official student hackathon league that runs over 200 weekend long invention competitions like TAMUHack around the world.

You’ll need to bring a valid student ID and whatever you’ll need to create your hack—along with anything that will make you comfortable for the weekend. Beyond that, TAMUHack will have their own custom hardware along with a hardware lab provided by MLH. Workshops running throughout the weekend will keep motivation up and help you hone your skills. ryan College Station is about to get a whole lot more country with the grand opening of Southerns! Located at Post Oak Mall, Southerns promises everything you need for a weekend hangout: great food, great music and great atmosphere. Their grand opening weekend is Jan. 23-25, and they have a killer country music lineup to get your boots moving!

The weekend wraps up on Saturday with NBC’s “The Voice” runner-up Jake Worthington. Since his 2014 appearance on the show, Worthington has put out two EPs and several successful singles.
