APP REVIEW

FREE

Whether you’re looking for a long vacation in the sparkling city of Paris or a quiet staycation in our very own BCS, this is the perfect app for you. Finding lodging wherever and whenever has never been simpler. Download the app. Choose a city. Pick a place to stay and go! It’s as easy as that. Airbnb has streamlined the hospitality realm to the T. You may be thinking it’s just for those with cash spilling out of their pockets, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Not only are there luxurious hot spots, there are also quaint places that will fit even the broke college student budget. Once the app is downloaded, you can sift through popular places. Or if you have a location in mind, you can scroll through a number of houses, condos, hotels and private rooms in that area. There’s also a filter aspect that allows you to specify if you desire a full kitchen or pool access. After staying somewhere, the guest and host can rate it and leave a review for each other. If a host has gotten a number of good reviews, they will be awarded the label of SuperHost, meaning they are highly recommended and well liked by other airbnb travelers. Airbnb was created a little over a decade ago in California by college roommates Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk. The idea blossomed from these friends who couldn’t pay rent, so they decided to blow up an air mattress and offered it as a place for people to crash for a few bucks. Its original name was Air Bed and Breakfast but was eventually shortened to Airbnb. Pretty clever. Between 2008 and 2012, their revenue skyrocketed and the concept spread like wildfire across the US and internationally. As of one year ago, Airbnb had over four million listings worldwide and was named the second-highest valued startup in the US. But don’t let us convince you. All you need to do is get the app and be prepared for an adventure.

CAPTAIN MARVEL

By Justin Walker

MOVIE REVIEW Higher. Faster. Stronger. All words used to describe the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). But following the release of “Captain Marvel,” you can add exciting, funny and hopeful to the list.

The film documents Carol Danvers’ journey to becoming Captain Marvel through a split timeline, with flashbacks to previous events that the present Danvers doesn’t fully remember or understand. With the help of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Danvers must both regain her memories and master her powers to stop an intergalactic war. “Captain Marvel” introduces us to one of the most powerful beings in the MCU, telling an origin story for both Captain Marvel and Fury, while also setting the stage for upcoming MCU films. Following the devastating events that took place at the end of “Avengers: Infinity War” and the “Ant Man and the Wasp,” audiences everywhere wondered exactly who would help our heroes defeat Thanos in the upcoming Avengers sequel. Everyone knew Captain Marvel would serve a major role, thanks to the end credits scene from “Infinity War.” But her movie debut answered several questions many MCU fans have had for years, as well as promising to deliver some powerful punches as Marvel transitions into new storylines. While not the best film in the MCU franchise, “Captain Marvel” definitely entertains and successfully introduces fans to what could be the next leader of the Avengers. It’s a must see as we anxiously await the premier of “Avengers: Endgame.”

ALBUM REVIEW

By Justin Walker

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard new music from James Morrison, and even longer since he’s released a major hit. But Morrison is back with his fifth studio album, “You’re Stronger Than You Know,” and is looking for redemption.

ARTIST: James Morrison ALBUM: You’re Stronger Than You Know

Morrison has experienced a lot in the past few years. In addition to being dropped by a major label, he had to deal with the deaths of his father, brother and nephew. As imagined, these major life moments made an impact on Morrison, and this new record documents that change. The first single from the album, “My Love Goes On,” features a duet with Joss Stone. Morrison’s distinctly rustic voice is on full display in this song, and it really sets the stage for what the album is all about—love. “So Beautiful” and “Feels Like The First Time” each serve as love letters to his wife, Gill, while Morrison shows his love and support to his daughters in the track “Until the Stars Go Out.” It’s been a journey for Morrison. After initial success on his first few albums, including the hit single “Broken Strings,” a duet with Nelly Furtado, it has been mostly average performances. But “You’re Stronger Than You Know” shows a massive amount of growth for Morrison, and should provide for a few hits in the process.

MUSIC Tribute bands Hardwired To Kill ‘Em All, 50 Shades of Green Day and Deftunes will take the stage to cover the iconic music of Metallica, Green Day and Deftones at the Grand Stafford Theater’s Tribute Night on March 23 from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Hailed for its 400-person capacity and full-service bar featuring classic cocktails and mezzanine seating, the 100-year-old Grand Stafford Theater is located in the heart of Downtown Bryan’s Cultural Arts District. Exceptional sound design, technology, professional lighting and acoustics reflect the theater’s redesign to offer the highest in production standards to local and touring performers.

Hardwired to Kill ‘Em All

Metallica, regarded by many as the face of American heavy metal, began in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. Houston-based band Hardwired to Kill ‘Em All is notorious for re-inventing the music of Metallica. Hardwired to Kill ‘Em All members Randy Alanis, Ignacio De La Torre, Nicolas Galletti and Jake Northam have been praised by fans for their entertaining performances, featuring classics such as “Enter Sandman,” “Nothing Else Matters” and “Battery,” among others. Songs from all of Metallica’s albums are played by the group, making Hardwired to Kill ‘Em All a must-see for Bryan/College Station heavy metal enthusiasts.

“TRIBUTE NIGHT” By Juniper LeValley

In 1986, lead vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt formed the legendary American rock band, Green Day. The band soon became a threesome with drummer John Kiffmeyer, who was replaced by Tré Cool in 1990. Founded in December 2017, 50 Shades of Green Day authentically covers decades of Green Day hits. Consequently, members Sean Conroy, Blake Rizzo, Aaron Steinberg and Jeremy Vorheer have made a name for themselves as “Houston’s over the top Green Day tribute band.” Green Day fans are encouraged to witness 50 Shades of Green Day in action as they pay homage to legendary rock and roll.

The Deftunes

Formed in 1988, Deftones is an American alternative metal band from Sacramento, California, featuring Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham, Dominic Garcia and Sergio Vega, who replaced Chino Moreno. Known as one of the most experimental groups from the alternative metal scene, classics such as “Change (In the House of Flies),” the band’s most commercially successful single, and “Elite,” which received a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, attest to the group’s influence. Deftunes, a Houston Deftones tribute band, is expected to pledge allegiance in an exciting and reinventive way, with Jesse Tabango doing vocals, Antonio Sanchez on bass and backup vocals, Andy Diaz on guitar, Angel Perez on drums and Kirk Sanchez on keys and samples. BRAZOS VALLEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S

“MOZART FOR MARCH” String into spring as you experience the world-class Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra at Mozart for March on March 24 at 5 p.m. BVSO musicians, the Brazos Valley Chorale, the Blinn College Choir and five soloists will unite to provide attendees with a magical evening of Mozart, featuring two works from the classical composer“Oboe Concerto” and “Requiem” at Texas A&M University’s Rudder Auditorium. In conjunction with BVSO’s 37th season theme “New Heights,” Mozart for March will truly take the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra to new levels of live performance with “a modern take on Mozart’s work, five great soloists, and a grand-scale production with fantastic choirs on stage that will take your breath away,” says Mary Koeninger, Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra Executive Director. “Mozart for March is going to be quite a spectacular show,” she adds. “Not many symphonies have the opportunity to put on this kind of production, except for larger ones like the Houston Symphony and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.” Music Director Marcelo Bussiki has managed to bring out the best in the musicians through collaborating with them, adds Koeninger. The first half of the evening will feature a musical rendition of “Oboe Concerto,” in addition to American composer Jonathan McNair’s contemporary composition “Meditation on Mercy.” Mozart’s “Oboe Concerto” has an expressive and melodic nature that is very pleasing to most audiences, making it “one of the best known and most important concertos in the oboe repertoire,” says Bussiki. BVSO’s principal oboist Rebecca Fairweather-Haskins will be featured in “one of the finest examples of Mozart’s skill in writing beautiful, expressive and joyful melodies,” he adds. McNair’s “Meditation on Mercy” elegantly sets the mood for the latter half

of the evening- the “Requiem.” The spirit of praying for mercy, the theme of Mozart’s “Requiem,” is reflected in the chant melodies on which the piece is based- Kyrie eleison and Asperges me. Mozart’s mesmerizing “Requiem” will be showcased by the “outstanding accomplished vocal faculty” from Texas colleges and universities, says Bussiki. He adds that he chose to incorporate these individuals in an effort to highlight their duality as both faculty members and successful performers. Blinn College Brenham campus’ Soo Yeon Kim will sing soprano, Jennifer Lane, a faculty member at the University of North Texas, will serve as contralto, tenor Randall Umstead teaches at Baylor University and baritone Hector Vásquez is from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. Concert attendees can enjoy a free pre-concert talk in the Forum of the Rudder Theatre Complex one hour prior to the performance. Houstonian Ann Thompson, opera lecturer since 1975, will provide guests with the history and meaning behind the music, in addition to delightful and witty insights regarding the composers. Following the performance, concertgoers will have the opportunity to partake in a social hour with the Maestro at Napa Flats. “Symphonic music is a beautiful art form that has been around for centuries,” says Nika Hancock, Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra Director of Communications and Marketing. “It is something you can enjoy at a much higher level when you attend an in-person concert.” One thing is for sure, she adds, “It has much more of a moving effect on you.” For more information, visit the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra’s website.

SEAD GALLERY’S MULTI-ARTIST EXHIBITION Interested in art with mystery, vibrant color combinations and layered textures? These are all elements that can be found at the SEAD Gallery and Bookshop’s Multi-Artist Exhibition in Downtown Bryan from March 21 through April 17. The new exhibit, featuring works by John Krajicek, Dawn Winter, and Cameron Sands, explores the abstract and transformative, with each artist offering their own unique pieces to display. John Krajicek is a painter located in College Station and a professor at Mays Business School at Texas A&M. His field is Business Communication, so he focuses on teaching writing skills and public speaking. His creative talents were satisfied with music and poetry until his 50’s, when he decided to take up painting. Working mostly with acrylic paints, John considers his paintings to be abstract expressionism. He says “I might be blown away by the technical prowess of, say, a hyperrealist painting, but it is always the mystery of

an abstract painting that haunts me, compels me, and stays with me.” John’s love for the mysterious and abstract shines through in his beautiful pieces. Dawn Winter is from Austin, Texas. She had no real interest in painting until visiting an Art Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where her passion for art was born. After that, she began experimenting with paint and letting her curiosity lead her. She uses acrylic and palette knives to create textured and layered pieces. About her paintings, she says, “Often times, my paintings explore the interactions between bold and muted colors, other times creating a sense of depth through a variation of a monochromatic color selection.” Since her first experiences with art, she has won awards in art contests, has had her art featured in multiple galleries, and has worked with interior designers. Dawn’s interest in layers and textures make her paintings truly unique, and they must be seen in person to be truly appreciated.

14 MAROON WEEKLY // Mar. 20, 2019 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM

Cameron Sands began experimenting with paintings after working a summer job at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. After graduation from The University of Texas in Austin, he enrolled in painting classes at University of Houston. His works have been featured in many exhibits and have been part of several private and public collections in Texas and other states. Cameron considers his work to be a personal reflection on the idea of transformation, and says he is “drawn to the subtle and unexpected ways that we can adjust our perspective.” Cameron truly is a talented artist, and his pieces are bursting with color and life. Located inside Downtown Bryan’s Historic Federal Building, the SEAD Gallery and Bookshop will host an opening reception for the exhibit on March 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. During the reception, wine and hors-d’oeuvres will be provided.
