Music Reviews Brothers Osbourne Album:

Pawn Shop Release Date: January 15, 2016

By Jordyn Smith

Country duo Brothers Osborne has released their first full length album “Pawn Shop.” Produced by Eric Church’s right-hand man Jay Joyce, “Pawn Shop” blends country with their roots and adds some pop appeal. The album kicks off with “Dirt Rich” an up-tempo, funky track about appreciating the finer things in life. “21 summer” brings memories back for anyone who has had a summer love, this song will strike a more personal chord with you. Included on the album is their current single “Stay A Little Longer,” which is burning up the charts. They slow it down with “Loving Me Back” featuring Lee Ann Womack. Womack’s vocals bring the pain out in the track. The title track “Pawn Shop” is a mid-tempo track about when life hits you a little bit hard. The best effort on the album is “American Crazy,” it’s a nostalgic tune about the middle class folks here in the US.

Green River Ordinance returns with their new album “Fifteen.” The album leads off with “Keep Your Cool,” a reminder to everyone to take a step back and not let your pride get in the way. The album rolls on with “Red Fire Night” an up-tempo track that will make you want to get up and two step. It’s a fun track that will certainly become a fan-favorite. They crank up the rock in “Maybe It’s Time (Gravity)” but slow it down “Simple Life.” The ability to balance has brought this album to the next level. “Tallahassee,” “You, Me & the Sea,” and “Endlessly” pull at the heart strings a bit. Green River Ordinance has done it again, they really do just keep getting better and better.

Coasts has released their self-titled, deluxe album. There is a great southern California vibe to this 16 track album. “Oceans” kicks off the album in the right way. Reminiscing about finding love next to the water, if you are a fan of the ocean, you will like this song… a lot. “Wolves” and “Lions” may be misleading track names but they deliver solidly. “You” is an up-tempo track that is one of the album’s best while “Modern Love” accurately portrays love in this day in age. The vocals and background music are equal in impressiveness to the songwriting. These guys are great at harmonizing and utilizing emotional highpoints in the music by bringing added flavors to the songwriting with the music itself. If you haven’t heard of Coasts yet, it may be a good time to give them a listen because this album does not disappoint.

Hoodie Allen is back with “Happy Camper.” Allen brings his own twist to Hip-Hop. The 10-track album has several collaborations with Meghan Tonjes, Blackbear, and Ricky Smith. Blackbear lends their talent to “Surprise Party” and “Champagne and Pools.” “Surprise Party” is a mid-tempo track with decent background accompaniment. “Champagne and Pools” brings more of the party vibe to the album. The keyboard in the background carries the track. Meghan Tonjes joins Allen in “Are U Having Any Fun?” The track sounds like it belongs in the early 90s and is hands-down the best track on the album. Overall, this is a middle-of-the-pack rap album that won’t disappoint Hoodie Allen fans.

SWEET & HEALTHY By Adrianna Zampieri

B

rownies, cookies, and ice cream, oh my! Eating healthy can be a difficult task where there are so many delicious foods tempting you to cross over to the dark side. But even desserts can be transformed into something (mostly) healthy with alternative recipes, and when eaten in moderation, can be a tasty treat you don’t have to cut from your meal plans. AVOCADO BROWNIES Avocado is all the rage lately, recipes ranging from simply adding slices to sandwiches to stuffing halves with eggs, cheese, and bacon for breakfast. Inspired by the versatility of the avocado, “The Healthy Maven” figured out a way to add this nutrient-rich fruit to a dessert everyone loves: brownies. It’s used in place of oil or butter, so you can still get your chocolate fix without the extra fat. WHAT YOU NEED: • 1 large avocado • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce • 1/2 cup maple syrup • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 3 large eggs HOW TO DO IT: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. In a blender or food processor, combine avocado, applesauce, maple syrup, and vanilla. You can also mash these together by hand but make sure that you mash it up very well and there are no clumps. 3. Add the ingredients from step 2 to a large bowl and whisk in eggs. 4. Add in coconut flour, cocoa powder, sea salt and baking soda and stir until well combined. 5. Grease an 8 x 8 inch baking dish

• • • •

1/2 cup coconut flour 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/4 tsp sea salt 1 tsp baking soda

with coconut oil and add batter. 6. Place in oven to bake for 25 minutes, slightly less for fudgier brownies or slightly longer for more cake-like brownies. 7. Allow the brownies to cool for 20 minutes before cutting into 16 brownies. 8. You can keep them on the counter in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days, or for a longer shelf life, store in the fridge or freezer.

PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES Cookies are staple in the world of desserts. They’re a blank canvas that can be transformed into just about anything: macadamia white chocolate, triple fudge, butterscotch pecan, and many, many more. But sometimes it’s best to keep things simple when you’re looking for a healthy alternative. “Amy’s Healthy Baking” offers an easy recipe that balances the sweet and salty flavors of a perfect peanut butter cookie without the excess sugar. WHAT YOU NEED: • 2 cups white whole wheat flour pg 6 • MAROON WEEKLY • Jan. 27, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

• 1 1/2 tsp baking powder

• 1/4 tsp salt • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly • 2 large egg whites, room

temperature • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 9 tbsp creamy peanut butter • 1 cup coconut or brown sugar

HOW TO DO IT: 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F, and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the butter, egg whites, and vanilla. Stir in the peanut butter until thoroughly combined. Stir in the sugar. Add in the flour mixture, stirring just until incorporated.

4. If your cookie dough is too dry, add one tbsp. of milk at a time until the cookie dough is the proper consistency. 5. Roll the dough into 24 balls, and place onto the prepared baking sheets. Flatten to the desired thickness and width. 6. Bake at 350°F for 9-11 minutes. 7. Cool on the baking sheets for ten minutes before placing them on a wire rack.

HOW TO DO IT: 1. Blend the bananas, cherries and vanilla (if using) in a blender or food processor until smooth. This may take some time, so just scrape it down and keep blending. 2. Scoop into a bowl and serve cold.

CHERRY BANANA ICE CREAM With no dairy, no excess sugar, and only a minimum number of ingredients, this cherry banana ice cream recipe from “Living on a Dime” is the easiest and healthiest dessert you can make on your own. Buy your produce fresh, stick in the freezer, and then blend together. It’s easy as pie. It’s also adaptable. Use strawberries instead of cherries. Mix mango and pineapple together. Experiment with raspberries, peaches, and any other fruit you can get your hands on. The choice is yours. WHAT YOU NEED: • 4 bananas, ripe, sliced and frozen • 1/2 cup frozen cherries • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract (optional)

on the Grand Stafford Theater and three local artists. The show will feature Jake Worthington and Shotgun Rider with Brad Gomez. Headlining the showcase will be Jake Worthington. Hailing from La Porte, Texas this 19-year-old has already accomplished some incredible things in his music career. In 2014, Worthington successfully auditioned for a spot on The Voice. He was selected as a member of Team Blake and went on to be the season 6 runner-up. Following his success on The Voice, Worthington released 2 covers that reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. He covered Richard Marx’s “Right Here Waiting,” that hit #14 and Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” that went to #17. Both songs would go on to reach the Top 15 on Billboard Country Top Digital Download’s chart. Continuing his success from the show, he went on the The Voice National tour where he continued to build his fan base. Last October, Worthington released his self-titled debut EP. The EP performed well, landing at #16 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and #44 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart. Worthington will continue to tour over the state of Texas and across the United States, including opening slots at the Taste of Country Music Festival and Country Fest 2016.

Co-headlining the show is the duo Shotgun Rider. Shotgun Rider is comprised of Logan Samford and Anthony Enriquez, and both call small towns between Lubbock and Amarillo home. Samford serves as the lead singer, and one with an impressive vocal range. The other half of the duo, Anthony, is the lead guitarist and serves as the main songwriter for the partnership. Shotgun Rider got their break with industry Veteran Alex Torrez. A man with an impressive résumé, he holds the keys to help this duo make major waves in the Texas Music scene. Shotgun Rider’s self-titled debut EP was released in March of 2015 and is definitely worth the listen. After their show at the Grand Stafford, they will stick around in BCS another day to play a show at the First Annual Keg Race on Friday. Brad Gomez grew up in Huffman, Texas. He began his venture into the world of music when he was 14-years-old when he began opening for a friend. Gomez has since made his way through bars in East Texas while he attends Texas A&M and has opened for some of Texas country and America’s greats. He has opened for Micky & the Motorcars, Clayton Gardner, and JB and the Moonshine Band. Currently, he’s working on getting his debut EP recorded and out into the market. Gomez has been a staple at local venues, has graced the stage at the Lakeside Icehouse, the Grand Stafford Theater, and World of Beer. Be on the lookout for this great new talent because he has a shot at becoming one of the next big Texas country acts!

CASEY DONAHEW BAND @ HURRICANE HARRY’S By Jordyn Smith

T

he Casey Donahew Band is gearing up for their return to Hurricane Harry’s on January 29 with special guest, The Judson Cole Band. Front man Casey Donahew and his band have become the epitome of work ethic. Show by show, album by album, the Casey Donahew Band has carved out their own niche in the ultra-competitive Texas Country Music Scene.

In 2006, Casey Donahew released his first record “Lost Days.” The biggest hit from the record was “Stockyards,” and it gave fans who have never been to Cowtown a reason to get there as soon as possible. It captured the historic Fort Worth Stockyards in all of their glory. The track was a real nod to where he got his first start, the Thirsty Armadillo. Later in 2006, he would release his self-titled album “Casey Donahew Band.” Included on this record is the fan favorite “White Trash Story.” A lovable Casey Donahew taught himself how to play the guitar and sing while redneck tune that still has fans singing along. attending Texas A&M, the influence of 80s and 90s country really resonated with him. The Casey Donahew Band kept their momentum and did not waste time before getting back into the studio. Two years after the success of “Moving On,” they released “Double Wide Dream” in October of 2011. Building on the success of the previous album, “Double Wide Dream” reached to #10 on the Billboard Country charts. The Casey Donahew Band had now started headlining shows. In 2013, they released “Standoff.” To no one’s surprise, the record performed well with fans and on the charts. It rose to #7 on the Billboard Country Charts. This record included the hit “Whiskey Baby.” What stands out the most about Casey Donahew and his bandmates is their dedication, drive, and work ethic. Each album released has outperformed the last and continued to show growth in the songwriting. The shows have slowly but surely gotten bigger and the tours have stretched farther and farther across the United States. For Texas Country fans, this is a can’t-miss show. Be sure to get out to Hurricane Harry’s on January 29 to hear the Casey Donahew Band with The Judson Cole Band. POSTSECRET: THE SHOW By Evan Flores

A

nonymity grants people the opportunity to reveal their true colors and reveal their deepest secrets. One famous art project puts them on display for all to see. This February, MSC OPAS is bringing “PostSecret: The Show” to Rudder Theater for a two-night special event (February 2 & 3) as a part of their spring series of performances. “PostSecret” is an art project that is uniquely continuous; people anonymously mail in their secrets to the project on a notecard. Founder Frank Warren began the project through his blog, PostSecret.com and since then has become a stage show. Warren will be present at Rudder for the Tuesday night performance on February 2. “PostSecret: The Show” has gained fame in communities across the nation as people share their most intimate secrets and help raise millions of dollars for suicide prevention charities. Using projected images and audio, three actors from the show will narrate and guide the audience through a number of secrets submitted by the audience and on their website. These secrets range from funny quirks about people to deeper, more personal subjects dealing with things like sexuality, death, grief, and many more topics. The goal of the show is to remind audience members that they are not alone in their struggles with their respective issues, and that others experience the same tribulations life can bring. “PostSecret: The Show” coming to Texas A&M provides a unique opportunity for attendees, especially as it connects them to people close and far, said Maura Lytle, Director of Back of House Operations with MSC OPAS. “It’s really cool to see because its secrets submitted from people here and all over,” said Lytle. “It creates a judgment-free zone where people can get off their chest what they need to say and others that are experiencing the same can relate to that.” Purchase tickets at the MSC Box Office for the shows on February 2 & 3.

GREEN RIVER ORDINANCE

O

n January 27, Hurricane Harry’s will welcome Green River Ordinance with guests Sean McConnell and Grady Spencer. Green River Ordinance will be having their official release party for their brand new album “Fifteen.”

called “The Beauty of Letting Go” and an EP “Way Back Home” in 2007. Green River Ordinance toured consistently, beginning to build their fan base across Texas and the U.S.

To nail Green River Ordinance down to one genre would be ridiculous. The band has dipped into the rock, singer/songwriter, and country genres flawlessly. With each new album or EP released, the band just seems to be getting better and better.

2009 and 2010 saw huge breakthroughs for the band. The singles “Come On” and “Rise Up” both became Top 40 hits, some playing on television shows from “The Young and the Restless,” to “So You Think You Can Dance” to “The Hills.” “Rise Up” landed itself on the AT&T Team USA Soundtrack in 2010. The band reaped the rewards of the success of the two singles and was featured alongside Mariah Carey, Rascal Flatts, Train, and others. Including their success with singles and national tours, Green River Ordinance also had two popular music videos for the singles on MTV and VH1.

Hailing from Fort Worth, they began touring in the early 2000s. Green River Ordinance began opening shows for bands like Flickerstick, Collective Soul, Eisley, and Mutemath. They started off small, independently releasing a full-length album in 2005

ALBUM RELEASE PARTY @ HARRY’S

By Jordyn Smith

In 2011, Green River Ordinance left their label EMI and went independent. The band took a different approach to funding their next full-length album, turning to Kickstarter to raise the cash. While they began work on their third studio album “Under Fire” they continued to tour and even put out two addition EP’s “Songs We Like From Before We Were Born” and “Waterhope” during this time. They released “Under Fire” in February of 2012. The record included the Texas Country hits “Dancing Shoes” and “Heart of Me.” This brought Green River Ordinance into a whole other light, they could now really reach out to Texas Country fans. The album resonated well with fans. It took on a special meaning to the fans because they had contributed to it, if it were not for their funds, the album may not have been produced. This sentiment stuck and has remained with fans since. In conjunction with the release of “Under Fire,” Green River Ordinance set out on their first national headlining tour: “Under Fire – The North American Tour” with Graham Colton as the opener. Make sure you get out early to the show! Doors open at 8 p.m. with Grady Spencer taking the stage at 8:30, Sean McConnell at 9:15, and Green River Ordinance at 10:30 p.m. You can purchase tickets in advance at Cavenders Boot City, Aggieland Outfitters (University Drive Location), Southern Jewlz Boutique or online at harrys.bcsclubs.com/events. 13 Hours (R)

By Linley McCord This year’s first war movie is out and it does not disappoint. “13 Hours” is an in-depth look at what happened in Benghazi, Libya in 2012. Director Michael Bay does the story decently well and it is definitely worth the watch. For those of you who don’t really remember what happened in Libya four years ago, the film does a good cliff-notes version of background information. In military-like font, you see that Benghazi is one of the most dangerous cities on the planet and that there are two US outposts—a pseudo-embassy and a CIA station that’s off the record. Viewers follow a team of six specially trained ex-military men as they come in to protect the base and a US ambassador. The first 30 minutes of the movie are spent setting up a tense scene of political unrest—which was 15 minutes too long. But when the fighting begins, it doesn’t stop. Bay does an exceptional job of portraying war as not something to be glorified, but there were some moments of artfulness that felt out of place. If the movie hadn’t been a true story, creative camera angles or perspective shots on falling ammunition could be impressive, but not when the goal of the bomb was the end of real American lives. Jack Silva (John Krasinski) is the focal point of the movie, displaying a devoted soldier and father. And yes, some characteristics of Jim Halpert do come out, even in the warzone. The characters as a whole are fairly well developed—each dealing with their own reasons for fighting this battle in the desert. There were some corny lines from everybody, but it doesn’t diminish the overall mood of the movie: intense. As a war movie, it was solid. Not quite as emotionally draining as “Lone Survivor “ or “Unbroken” but more along the lines of “American Sniper.” Fair warning: there are some gruesome moments but not an excessive amount. It gets 7/10 stars and is worth the trip to the theater.

Bottle Shock NETFLIX By Adrianna Zampieri Most everyone knows the late Alan Rickman for his role as the mysterious Severus Snape in the “Harry Potter” film franchise, but his talent exceeds far past the boundaries of J. K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. In “Bottle Shock,” a movie loosely based off of the historic 1967 Paris wine-tasting contest, Alan Rickman plays Steven Spurrier, a Paris-based wine merchant who plans a blind battle of the wines, pitting the refined French against the wild-card Americans. His journey to find the finest wine in America takes him to Napa Valley, California where he meets the owner of Chateau Montelena, a winery struggling to make ends meet. What happens when these two collide is, as they say, history. Casting Alan Rickman as a wine snob was brilliant. Rickman’s signature British drawl is right at home in “Bottle Shock,” equal parts haughty and impressed, and although the plot lags in quite a few places, Rickman steals your attention the moment he’s on screen. That alone is enough of a reason to watch this movie. As a side note, Chris Pine is another noteworthy actor in “Bottle Shock,” but the long, blonde wig he wears definitely needs to be introduced to a hairbrush.
