Music Reviews
By Jordyn Smith
Fightin Texas Aggie Granger Smith has made his major record label debut with “Remington.” The 15-track album includes Granger’s first Number One “Backroad Song,” and the rest of the album follows suit. Granger has brought his Texas style to Nashville and is lighting up the charts, finding a wonderful balance of up-tempo tracks with several ballad, thought provoking tracks. Included on the album is a duet with fellow Broken Bow artist Brooke Album: Eden. “Crazy as Me” is a sweet love song set to a waltz tempo and has the marks of a hit. Granger experiments with some new country sounds in “If the Boot Fits,” and, unlike many Remington of his fellow country artists, he can pull it off. The songwriting behind it elevates the track, and authentic is the perfect word to describe this album. It is the dose of country Nashville Release Date: so desperately needed. Included on the album are “5 More Minutes,” a classic Granger track March 4, 2016 that pulls at the heartstrings. Earl Dibbles Jr. makes his gloriously return on the album with three tracks. This is a great moment for Granger and his team.

Legendary rapper 2 Chainz is back with “Collegrove.” 2 Chainz’s infectious personality comes through in this album. A main feature of the album are the multiple collaborations with fellow rapper Lil’ Wayne. The 13-track album got its unique name by pairing the two neighborhoods where 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne grew up: College Park near Atlanta for 2 Chainz and Hollygrove New Orleans for Lil Wayne.
If you are looking for something a little different to listen to this week, M. Ward has released his new album “More Rain.” The album uniquely starts off with a short intro track that is the relaxing sound of rain and then leads into “Pirate Dial.” The track is laid back that has a distinct singer-songwriter vibe to it as Ward’s smooth vocals carry the track.
With the inspiration of their old neighborhoods, the two collaborated to make this album, which is a meticulously made piece of art. The heart and soul put into the lyrics behind each song really stands out. 2 Chainz has really outdone himself with this album.
The album rolls on with “Time Won’t Wait,” and this rocking tune has a very 50’s classic rock style to it. The backup vocals, piano riffs, and guitar accentuate this classic style and drive the song. The rest of the album flows seamlessly, and is a really great pickup.

Newsboys
The legendary Christian rock group the Newsboys has released their latest album “Love Riot.” Many remember these guys from the early 2000s when their fame hit its peak. Since then, the band has stayed at the forefront of the Christian genre, inspiring believers and attracting new believers. The Newsboys have shown on their new album, once again, why they are so popular. Their ability to connect to fans with each thought-provoking, faith-inspired track really comes through. The 10-track album is an eclectic mix of themes and is definitely not your average “raise your hands and sing hallelujah” Christian gospel album. There are more dark themes in “Guilty” that bring an authenticity to the group. The album overall is strong.

rustrating, time-consuming, and stressful: the three words that come to mind when you think about moving. Just the thought of packing boxes and loading boxes only to unload and unpack what you spent hours organizing is enough to make even the most optimistic person cringe, so minimize your stress level with a few tips and tricks to make your journey into a new home a more pleasant one. 1. When it’s time to move, it’s also a great time to go through your belongings and decide what you do and what you don’t want to keep. By purging the items you no longer need, you’ll have fewer things to move, and you know that you’ll be settling into your new home with no extraneous items. 2. An endless amount of cords is a necessary evil when it comes to electronics. Before unplugging, label them with masking tape as a reminder for which cords are used for which device. Also take a photo of the cords
pg 6 • MAROON WEEKLY • Mar. 09, 2016 • maroonweekly.com
while they’re still plugged in. Doing so will save you the time and frustration when setting up the electronics in your new home. 3. When taking apart furniture, you’re left a number off small screws and piece that are easy to misplace. Keep all of the screws and hardware into a sealable, labeled bag and tape it to the furniture itself or place it in the corresponding box. 4. While moving is a stressful event, there’s no need to make it harder than it has to be. Pack your heaviest items, such as books, in rolling suitcases. Your back will thank you. 5. Rather than taking your clothes off of hangers just to have to hang them back up again, put them in garbage bags. Either slide it right over your clothes from the bottom up and tie the knot around the hangers, or poke a

hole at the bottom of the garbage for the hanger and tie the knot below the bottom of your clothes. 6. To avoid confusion, use colorful duct tape or labels to mark on your boxes their ultimate destination. There’s nothing worse then hauling heavy boxes into one room only to find out it goes in another. 7. When packing, wrap your breakable items with towels and blankets to protect them from breaking. It’ll cut down on the amount of bubble wrap and packing paper you’ll need.

8. If you’re moving with pets, all of the commotion can stress your animals out, and as a pet parent, you want to keep them calm. Separate your pets from the hustle and bustle by placing them in an empty room and closing the door. Don’t forget to give them their favorite bed or toy, too. The scent of their old home will help them settle into their new one. 9. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so you definitely won’t be moved in and unpacked in a day. Pack a box of first night essentials, including items such as toiletries, medication, basic cleaning products, and other necessary items. This ensures you won’t have to go digging through box after box just to find your toothbrush after a long day of manual labor.

ROUGH ROOMMATES
M
arch is here, which means it’s time to start thinking about whether you need to renew your lease or run away as fast as possible. We have all had roommate issues: dishes in the sink and clothes on the floor, or the odd phenomenon where the trash fills up minutes after you take it out. Those are to be expected when living with another person, but some Aggies have experienced more of their fair share of weirdness when it comes to roommates.
OR THEY KEEP WEIRD THINGS IN THE FRIDGE:
SOMETIMES THEY HAVE ODD EATING HABITS:
SPEAKING OF VERMIN:
“My roommate eats raw onions.” “My current suitemate eats sticks of butter.”
pg 8 • MAROON WEEKLY • Mar. 09, 2016 • maroonweekly.com
“My roommate during freshman year shot a possum and put it in our freezer. When I found the possum I screamed and confronted her, and she didn’t understand the problem because it was in a plastic bag. She wanted to stuff it for decoration. One night I put on all of my oven mitts, grabbed it and ran to the dumpster as fast as I could.”
“My roommate during freshman year, on the first day, asked me if I liked rodents and then whipped out a pet mouse. He put it in a ball and let it run around our room and crawl over his shoulder all the time…pets were illegal in dorms.”
OR PETS IN GENERAL: “My roommate during freshman year thought her beta fish was going to jump out of the bowl, so she literally put a noodle strainer over the top of it. I would move it just a little each day to mess with her. She was convinced it was the fish and she never even suspected me.” BUT ANY PET IS BETTER THAN A GHOST...OR A DEMON: “One of my roommates swears she saw a ghost in our apartment but said ‘it’s ok she was just here to check on us.’”
“Last year my roommate came home and said ‘sorry I’ve been acting odd these past couple of days, but I’m better now, I had an exorcism performed on me last night and I can finally get back on track with Jesus.’ He said he had a demon in him wiping away his memories of life as he knew it.”
SOMETIMES THEY OVERSTEP THEIR BOUNDS:
“An old roommate of mine felt the need to “chaperone” any time boys would come over.”
OR THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE:
“My roommate during my study abroad in Africa this summer would apologize every time she walked into a room. I would be on my bed looking at pictures or we would all be in the kitchen and she would open the door and be like ‘Oh, sorry!’ It always caught me so off guard and made me feel so awkward I would be like ‘no, I’m sorry.’ One time I said ‘thanks.’ You don’t need to apologize for your presence.”
OR THEY FIND ODD WAYS TO MAKE MONEY:
“My roommate last year would let her boyfriend give haircuts in our living room – sometimes 20 people at a time. This would take place every other Sunday until she got written up for it. The hair would literally be on the floor. I mean, they swept, but not well.”
“My roommate’s boyfriend sold drugs out of our house. I told him to stop on multiple occasions but he would try to bribe me with more drugs. Needless to say, I moved out.” Whatever your roommate situation is, at least it’s only a year – unless you signed a two-year lease!

FLYING THE COOP:
By Annabeth Reeb
The Struggles of Moving Away From Home A
dulting is hard. When the time comes to move out of your folks house, you may not be as prepared as you had originally thought. Don’t stress, you aren’t alone. We’ve highlighted some of the more common issues that young adults face during the post-parent struggle, and we say down with a few anonymous Aggie students to hear how the stuggle affected their college experience: 1. GROCERIES DON’T JUST MAGICALLY APPEAR Sure, it was always annoying to have to pause your video game and bring in groceries, but you never really had to worry about actually buying them when you were still under your parent’s roof. “I haven’t bought milk in two years. I won’t buy anything that expires within two weeks”
2. LAUNDRY IS A REAL THING Some of us come to school completely equipped to take care of ourselves, some may accidentally wash whites and colors together, and some aren’t even sure where to put the detergent; regardless, laundry isn’t fun for anyone. “During freshman year, there was a point where I ended up just buying more underwear instead of doing my laundry more often. My mom caught on when I came home for Christmas break with at least 50 pairs.” 3. YOU MAY NEED AN ALARM UPGRADE Waking up for high school was easier with a screaming voice at the bottom of the stairs. In college, sleeping through your alarm means more than just getting a tardy slip, and mom and dad aren’t there to make sure you get up.
maroonweekly.com • Mar. 09, 2016 • MAROON WEEKLY • pg 11
“After I slept through two quizzes, my mom sent me one of those alarm clocks on wheels that make you chase it to turn it off” 4. THINGS DON’T FIX THEMSELVES Landlords, apartment managers, leasers – they’re great, but they aren’t your parents. If your shower isn’t working, they’ll probably get it fixed eventually, but not near as fast as mom would. “I showered at the rec for half of my freshman year because I was too scared to tell my landlord that mine was broken.” 5. THE WHOLE RAMEN THING WAS COOL FOR A WHILE, BUT… Eventually you found out you can’t live off packaged noodles. Home cooked meals are a thing of the past after moving out, and if you do manage to make a good meal, the dishes don’t do themselves. “I struggled with malnutrition during the first few semesters of college. Apparently noodles and seasoning packets don’t cover the basic food groups.” Is there a solution? We may never know. For now, do your laundry, set your alarm, and hope for the best.

This Week
@ Grand Stafford Theater By Evan Flores
G
rand Stafford Theater in Bryan is continuing their spring lineup of local artists this week with two performances with musicians that are bringing a unique sound across the state. The Stafford will be hosting Ryan Scott Travis with Colin Leonard and Kyle Cook this Wednesday, March 9, and Folk Family Revival with special guest The Cerny Brothers on March 10. RYAN SCOTT TRAVIS W/ COLIN LEONARD & KYLE COOK - MARCH 9 Country-Americana artist Ryan Scott Travis first came to the music scene with his debut album, “Breakdown,” which was released in December of 2015. Produce by Grammy award winner Mitch Dane, Breakdown brought a lyrically profound and musically pleasing sound to the Texas Hill Country where Travis is from. He emphasizes the upbeat tempo of more alt bands while blending in classic country soul into his music that is sure to impress audiences. Colin Leonard and Kyle Cook are two independent artists from Texas that offer a soulful and unique sound to their music that will be performing with Travis on March 9. Colin Leonard is a singer-songwriter that plays the frontman for Atlas Youth, an Alternative/Ambient Rock band. From Austin, Colin Leonard and Atlas Youth tour the state bringing their music for audiences to see, boasting that they are a must-see, in-person experience. Kyle Cook is a local student at Texas A&M University, making his debut on the music scene at the Grand Stafford Theater. Kyle recently released his first EP album titled “Unworthy” and with his melodic voice and easygoing sound he is surely going far.

FOLK FAMILY REVIVAL W/ CERNY BROTHERS - MARCH 10 Best described as a country rock and roll band, Folk Family Revival lets the music speak for itself as they make their way across the Southern states playing in every venue from cantinas to rodeos. Their newest release from last year, “Water Walker,” boasts tracks that were formed while on the move with fresh ideas, and this mobility allowed them to reach new audiences and build their fan base. This psychedelic music group is a definite must-see at the Grand Stafford as their unique story adds a whole new element to the country music scene. The duo called the Cerny Brothers consist of the two actual brothers, Robert and Scott Cerny, who started their band off of a decision they made while on a boating trip on the Mississippi River. Neither of the pair knew how to play or sing the music they wanted people to hear, but they began writing their own pieces of music and sold them on cassettes at their high school. Their first album “Dream” ushered them into the music realm in Los Angeles where they learned the instruments they play now and began songwriting. Now, the duo travels across states to bring their folk melodies with catchy beats that are interactive for listeners. Their performances tend turn into chorus driven sing-a-longs that will surely get the audience into the experience.

Movie Reviews
Zootopia (PG)
By Linley McCord Disney continues its string of solid animated films, proving its expertise in movies of the talking animal variety. “Zootopia” does not disappoint. With likeable and relatable characters, an engaging plot, and jokes for parents and kids, this latest Disney installment isn’t one you want to miss. Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) is strong, sweet, and very naïve bunny with grand dreams of being a cop in the biggest city in her area. After growing up on a carrot farm, she relocates to the major metropolis Zootopia, where predator animals live in harmony with prey. She trains in the police academy and is put in the heart of the city, amidst heavy discrimination because, well, she’s a bunny. But when traditionally predator animals start to go missing and a sinister plot to disrupt the new social order is discovered, Judy and her reluctant sidekick Nick (Jason Bateman)—a fox, aka a sworn enemy of rabbits—jump onto the case in a race against the clock. The plot was intricate and just complicated enough to keep parents entertained but not to the point of losing kids. It’s well rounded and presents several social commentaries, such as the issue of prejudice in the workplace. It’s also hilarious and will keep you laughing. Like all Disney films, it makes a point to encourage and inspire viewers. Naturally, all the characters are strong. Judy is empowering and persistent under daunting circumstances, her bright personality and quick mind sure to capture hearts. Nick is witty and genuine, fighting to get out of his stereotype of being a sly fox and battling insecurities of his own. They’re dynamic as a friendship and as individuals. As per usual with Disney, the animation is beautiful. As weird as it is to be awestruck by an animated film, the artists did an amazing job with creating different biospheres to show how all the animals lived harmoniously. The script is good, not great. There are certainly some so-cute-it’s-corny parts, but the writers did the adults a few favors (like throwing in an impressive “Breaking Bad” reference). An excellent movie that deserves a watch, “Zootopia” earns 8/10 stars.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny NETFLIX
By Adrianna Zampieri Netflix has made a name for itself with its original series and movies, and now it attempts to bring back the captivating world of mythological ancient China in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny.” More than a decade later after the 2000 blockbuster hit, this sequel has been long awaited. Michelle Yeoh returns as Yu Shu Lien in this martial-arts quest. She hunts for the legendary sword, Green Destiny, trains a next-generation warrior, and holds the fate of the Martial world in her hands. With the tagline, “The past returns with a vengeance,” it has to be thrilling. Right? This Netflix original rides on a wave of nostalgia, but it takes more than that to produce a successful sequel. Although the cinematography is captivating at moments, the film itself is lacking, both in plot and in three-dimensional characters. It’s not as refined as the original, and it certainly lacks the punch (pun intended) of its predecessor. It also fails to bring the same sense of authenticity the first movie, a Chinese-language film, embraced. Netflix overlooked a significant detail that would have appealed to diehard fans because for a movie set in ancient China, everyone sure knows how to speak English well.
