MOVIE REVIEW: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST by Celeste Tamez

A

ttention all Disney-lovers: the Beauty and the Beast remake is finally in theaters! The highlyanticipated and long-awaited Disney film premiered on March 17 with super fans attending early showings the day before. The tale as old as time swept in a whopping $357.1 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Truly “something there that wasn’t there before,” the remastered classic attracted a new generation of fairy tale enthusiasts, while still reeling in devoted life-long fans who grew up on the 1991 classic. The 26-year-old film experiences a rebirth that awakens nostalgia in die-hard Disney fanatics. From the exquisite digital detail to the newly designed favorite characters, there is a truly enchanting aura throughout every song and scene. The screenwriters, Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos, remained true to the original storyline and classic songs, while managing to squeeze in a few unexpected yet meaningful surprises, making you wonder why this remake wasn’t filmed years ago. Taking on the role of Belle, Emma Watson brings a refreshing and elegant take on the famous bookreading princess. The actress’s performance does justice to the prestigious role, as she almost perfectly embodies the character’s effortless grace and genuine compassion. Watson is famously known for her role as Hermione in the Harry Potter films. Luke Evans plays the ever-so-handsome and charming Gaston, a character who is given a substantial amount of depth and background explaining his egotistical persona. His trusty, right-hand man LeFou is played by Josh Gad, who voiced Olaf from the Disney instant classic “Frozen.” Along with a star-studded cast, which includes actors Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, Stanley Tucci, and Audra McDonald, the animated figures do not fail in their task of entertaining. Young or old, Disney reminds you how a little compassion can go a long way and never, under any circumstances, should you judge a book by its cover. So stop whatever you’re doing and head to the theater now! The 2017 humanized version of Beauty and the Beast is on its way to becoming an instant classic. If you don’t believe us, ask the dishes!

Album: HERO (DELUXE EDITION) Artist: MAREN MORRIS Released: MARCH 17 by Emily Taylor

I

n 2016, Maren Morris released her second album, “HERO” and just this month released the deluxe edition of the original eleven-track album. The deluxe edition has three more tracks that are new to her fans. Morris has an original, yet familiar tone that listeners have grown to love through hearing her predecessors like LeAnn Rimes and Shania Twain. Although they’re her seniors in the country music industry, they share the same lyrical tones that make these classy, southern belles infamous. Maren Morris is sure to only continue to steal the hearts of many as her voice only continues to become more a household sound. Morris currently has a few tracks that are blaring through the airwaves of radio stations everywhere. “80s Mercedes” and “My Church” are two tracks on the deluxe album that have played a vital part in gaining fans through her musical journey. Although she calls the country music industry and genre home, that shouldn’t cause anyone to shy away from giving her a shot. Her upbeat vibes and catchy lyrics are sure to make anyone swoon into the speakers.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW:

O

by Devika Singh

SHANE SMITH & THE SAINTS

n Saturday, April 1, annual music festival Chilifest presents Texas folk rock band Shane Smith and the Saints. In an exclusive interview, here is what leadman Shane Smith had to share about the band’s story, in anticipation of the event. MW: You’ve played Chilifest before, this being your third time, how special is that? Shane Smith: This is our third time playing for Chilifest, yes. I don’t know who holds the record for playing most years but we are proud to have been invited for the third time in a row. It means a lot to us to be asked to play for a third year.

MW: Is there anything in particular that you’re excited for during Chilifest? SS: I think what makes Chilifest unique is the student body of Texas A&M. It’s such a vibrant, high-energy, fun community of young adults and it’s a lot of fun when you get to perform in front of them. And our job is not just to perform but also to hype them up and get them ready for the event because they take hype really well. We get to ramp them up we feel really privileged to be back for the third year in a row and it means a lot to us on a personal level. MW: We’re so excited that you’re back! How would you characterize your genre?

by Laura Simmons

MW: On your website it says that you’re going to Ireland this fall. Can you tell us more about your international experiences with your music? SM: We are going to Ireland in December and we have already performed there once. We have also performed in Malaysia, which was our first Asian country, and in Jamaica. MW: What has been your proudest moment as a singer or band? SS: Probably Austin City Limits. I don’t know if that was the proudest but it’s definitely up there at the top. We’re all very proud of coming that far from the place that we know we started. We aren’t one of these bands that just kind of showed up overnight. We worked extremely hard to get any inch forward. We started playing on Sixth Street in Austin, they were four-hour residential shows back to back, and we did that for two years before even getting outside of Austin. And over time it organically started to grow. That’s our story and each month that goes by a new opportunity comes up. We’re doing all of these things that weren’t in the cards for us and we take a lot of pride in that. Out of everything I think Austin City Limits has been our proudest moment. And it was a really good year for us to play, also, because the headliners were really good and close to our sound.

An aRchaeologist’s EYE

SS: I would characterize our genre as folk rock. Country is hard to characterize and we have other styles in our music.

f you’ve got an eye for archeology and enjoy art in all its infinite forms, then the latest exhibition at Forsyth Galleries is the place for you. The traveling exhibition, “An Archaeologist’s Eye: The Parthenon Drawings of Katherine A. Schwab,” is currently on display in the Memorial Student Center. Dr. Schwab, a Professor of Art history in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University in Connecticut, is an artist as well as an art historian. Dr. Schwab explores the history of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece in her work by focusing primarily on the sculpted metopes that adorn the Parthenon’s Doric frieze, the high line of sculpture that wraps around the building. Due to violent destruction by human hands and erosion from air pollution, the Parthenon east and north metope relief sculptures have been transformed into poorly preserved renditions of their initial, classic creation. Dr. Schwab’s artwork examines the themes of time, preservation, interpretation, and decay of the Parthenon. The exhibition includes sixteen drawings of the east metopes depicting the narrative of the Giants defeated by the Olympian Gods in various shades of brown pastel pencil and graphite. The display continues with twelve drawings in graphite of the north metopes, illustrating the Sacking of Troy. As a researcher, Dr. Schwab has presented a contextual analysis of the metopes as part of a visual scheme. The deterioration of the Parthenon has created difficulties in imagining a reconstruction of the building, and part of her work includes inventing new approaches and solutions to this ever-growing challenge that scholars face. In her research, Dr. Schwab has also compared the vandalizing of the metopes to current attempts at destruction of ancient art and architecture. Dr. Schwab’s exhibit will be on display at the Forsyth Galleries until July 23, 2017.

Duncan Fellows w/ Honest Men E

very weekend deserves a solid soundtrack, and the Grand Stafford has your spring playlist on tap with Duncan Fellows and Honest Men on April 1.

Duncan Fellows is the brainchild of Colin Harman and Cullen Trevino, who first began playing music together while in college in Austin. The two artists bonded over music they grew up with such as early Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, and Animal Collective. They spent many nights playing music at Cullen’s house located on Duncan Lane which later became the inspiration behind the name of the band. Harman and Trevino each learned to play a handful of instruments, and eventually recruited five other friends to form a folk band that played gigs around Austin. In 2012, the band dwindled down to five, and thus, the current Duncan Fellows was born. Their first EP “Twelve Months Older” was released in 2013 and featured four songs written by Colin and Cullen, and was produced by Riley Sheehan. In 2015, the group released a redefined five song EP called “Marrow.” Both EP’s featured unique arrangements and harmonic choruses from Colin, Cullen, and Margot Stevenson. Their music is often melodic and dreamlike, but at times it can be driving and raw. Before the indie-rock band Duncan Fellows takes the stage, the Grand Stafford Theater will rock out with indie/alternative band, Honest Men. Honest Men is based out of Waco and tour both locally and worldwide. The group consists of Seth Findley, Brooks Whitehurst, Zachary Solomon, and Nathan Wallace. Their unique and modern songs are sure to be a crowd pleaser. Do not miss out on this epic night of music at Grand Stafford Theater. Tickets can be purchased at the Grand Stafford website in advance for $10 or at the door for $12. Doors open at 8pm and music will begin at 9pm.

Funding Nemo: Labs For Children A

ggieland has always been known for its philanthropic students and their goals to give back. On March 29, Texas A&M sorority Delta Gamma is sponsoring Labs For Children’s event, “Funding Nemo.” The event is a 24-hour online fundraiser whose proceeds go toward training and placement of Nemo, a prospective therapy dog who will go into training in May. Labs For Children— founded in 2016 and based out of Austin— is a non-profit organization that is focused on serving abused and neglected children by providing a therapy companion. It trains dogs to escort children through crises and provide emotional support. Their mission is to give kids the courage to speak up and share without as much hesitation and fear. According to its website, child abuse cases were in the millions last year and these dogs accompany the children through the legal and forensic processes, where they would normally be uncomfortable. In turn, the children’s cooperation simplifies court procedures and leads to a less complicated trial. “Anytime there’s an allegation, if there is physical or sexual abuse, law enforcement will investigate and we’ll take cases that get referred to us,” Kyle Wickham, founder, said. “Those kids are seen by an interviewer by the Child Advocacy Center, by a specially trained interviewer.”

Child Advocacy Centers and criminal justice systems have taken more to this idea since it was first introduced. It has been apparent that children are calmer and more willing to share when with a friendly and familiar moral supporter. The children are also more strengthened for the future, after being able to comfortably share their trauma with adults. In addition to Nemo, dogs like Jett, Lil’ Buddy and Willie have been aiding children with every wag of a tail. Their proud stories are available on labsforchildren.org.

Saturday, April 8 9:30 a.m. to noon

“These centers see around 50 up to 100 children per month that get referred, so dogs that are full time at the center can work with them,” Wickham said. Donors can fund for the campaign on the crowdrise.com page available on any of the Labs For Children media pages, including Facebook. Labsforchildren.org also provides opportunities to donate in other ways, such as “Feed a Pup Today” and “Give a Pup a Home,” so log on to support these wagging tails and helping hearts.

Chilifest:

What & WHY

by Abby Newton

A

lthough many enjoy the lineup of amazing bands and the memories made at Chilifest, what most people don’t know is that Chilifest is a non-profit organization, Chilifest Inc., raising money for local charities. Chilifest is known as one of the greatest weekends in the Brazos Valley where huge names in country music play on outdoor stages in Snook and teams can sign up for the event to get the chance to win prizes or to compete in the chili cook-off. All of the hype surrounding the event could possibly overshadow the purpose, but the organization works hard to bring new and exciting performers to the event in order to raise money in ticket sales and contribute to the community in the best way. So far, Chilifest has brought in some of the biggest names in country music such as Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Pat Green, Randy Rogers, Eli Young Band, Cody Johnson and so many more. Chilifest has also donated over $2,500,000 to local charities over the years, and each year is even more successful than the last. Chilifest Inc. prides itself on its commitment to the mission statement, “To offer assistance to thousands of ill, neglected, and less fortunate individuals; as well as to provide funding for the many organizations who put forth the effort to resolve the life threatening

problems that endanger the lives of so many. This statement speaks volumes about the Chilifest Inc. organization and the contributions they strive to make for the community. The organization donates to over 13 recognized organizations in the Brazos Valley, including the Boys and Girls Club of Brazos Valley, Still Creek Ranch, and Bryan Protection Firemen. Their gifts are varied and have given to other various organizations as needs have arisen. Chilifest is much more than a country music and chili festival, and it means something much deeper to the community than its star-studded lineups. Texas A&M students from years ago to now speak of Chilifest as some of their best college memories, and Brazos Valley locals look forward to the event each year. This is just another way Chilifest Inc. contributes by providing a unique and memorable experience for the whole community. Chilifest is a vital part of the community, so head out to see what all the hype is about and keep in mind all of the good that is being done for so many.

I

t’s the most wonderful time of the year for chili eaters and country music fans: Chilifest.

Chilifest 2017 is March 31 through April 1. Popular Texas country artists will be taking the stage and giving the audience incredible performances all night long. Night 1 of Chilifest has a star-studded lineup that you will not want to miss. Reckless Kelly is an Americana/Texas country band from Austin. Their unique music represents a broad genre that a variety of listeners enjoy. The band has toured together for 20 years and produced multiple successful albums including grammy-winning, “Long Night Moon.” They’re a regular to Chilifest, and the event honestly wouldn’t feel the same without them. William Clark Green is a country music singer from Flint, and he released his first ever album while studying at Texas Tech. His highenergy performance will consist of songs from his four different albums, and fans can expect to hear his most recent popular single, “Ringling Road.” Guitarist Reid Dillon, fiddler Laura Kane, bassist Jonathan saenz and drummer Jason Albers joined together and created the Flatland Cavalry in the Fall of 2012. This gritty folk band caught the attention of the Texas Country world back in 2015 with the release of their first EP, “Come May.” John Baumann is a hard-working and creative artist, who successfully tried his hand at singing and songwriting. He toyed with the mechanics of songwriting in between college and work for several years before making the jump to record a debut EP “West Texas Vernacular” in 2012. His country sound showcases his literary eye for detail and poetic charm. At just 22 years old, Parker McCollum has earned critical comparisons to great artists like Ryan Bingham and John Mayer. McCollum and his band perform high-energy shows that will keep the crowd energy high all night. The Hunter Rea Band is a blues infused country/rock band from Belton. The band’s members are Hunter Glaske, Adam Rea, John Allen Davidson, and Mason Hightower. The group combines high-energy and an honest message to create a new and refreshing sound. Doors open at noon on Friday, March 31st and close at midnight. Purchase your tickets at www.chilifest.org. Enjoy the music with this incredible lineup.

Chilifest: Saturday O

and “Texas Kinda Way.” Johnson has self-released six albums, his latest “Gotta Be Me,” debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard’s Country Albums chart.

Chilifest announced this year’s headliners which include country band and familiar face to the event, like Cody Johnson and Wade Bowen, and Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Waco native, Wade Bowen made his first appearance at Chilifest in 2011. With more than a decade of touring and five independent albums under his belt, Bowen released a duet album with Randy Rogers in 2015, “Hold My Beer, Vol. 1,” which climbed to No. 3 on the U.S. Top Country Albums Chart the same year.

ver the years, Chilifest has brought together some of the most entertaining artist for groups of thousands to enjoy, each year growing larger in numbers and bigger in talent. And this year surely won’t disappoint with a stacked lineup on day two of the festival.

After the release of 60 albums and over 30 million dollars in sales worldwide, and 41 years later, Lynyrd Skynyrd has continued to rock fans of all ages. Though the band has had tragic losses which halted their touring for over a decade, the rock and roll powerhouse still stands and holds true to their roots.

Almost 20 years of selling out venues and over half a million independent albums sold, Jason Boland & The Stragglers’ unique red dirt, folk-rock sound has created a reputation all their own. The band’s recent album, “Squelch,” reached new heights, selling over a million records globally.

Following the rock legends will be Texas Country artist Cody Johnson, Wade Bowen, Jason Boland & The Stragglers, and Shane Smith & The Saints.

Though Shane Smith & The Saints is spirited, four-part harmony has shared their folk, rock, fiddle beat as far as Colorado and Kansas, and even across the pond to Ireland. They’ll hit Chilifest for their third time and start to become a staple of their own.

Cody Johnson is no stranger to large crowds singing his anthems, including “Cowboy Like Me” which broke through on the Billboard chart

Chilifests’ Saturday line-up is a must see mixture of talent across the board that you won’t want to miss.

ChiliFest Tip Sheet by Celeste Tamez

C

hilifest is officially around the corner, and the Brazos Valley is buzzing with anticipation and excitement. Tickets have been purchased, tents set up, and outfits have been coordinated. What else is there to do? Ensuring an fun and unforgettable time at Chilifest requires attention to the detail. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Follow these simple tips and tricks, and you’ll deserve an “I Survived Chilifest” T-shirt. REMEMBER THE WEATHER Unfortunately, the beautiful state of Texas has an unpredictable weather forecast at times. It can go from freezing cold to 80 degrees and clear skies to full on thunderstorms within hours. Be sure to check the weather forecast the day before and morning of so you are aware of the elements, whatever they may be. Bring the essentials: sunscreen and an umbrella. Getting those awkward and uncomfortable sunburns are never fun and neither is ruining your favorite pair of boots due to water damage. HYDRATION IS KEY This weekend long event filled with country music and fun needs to be fueled by something other than adrenaline. Staying hydrated with water throughout each of the day long concerts is not so much as a tip as it is a necessity to life. Bring a refillable water bottle for convenience and track how much much H2O you consume. This will help you avoid heat-related injuries like dehydration and hyperthermia. DOES ANYONE HAVE A CHARGER? Picture this: Chilifest is in full effect. People are dancing, playing games, and singing along to the current performer. “I must capture this and share it with my friends who did not receive the opportunity to attend Chilifest,” you think. So you whip out your cellular device only to receive the notification that it only has 10% of battery left. In order to avoid this situation, bring a portable phone charger with you! Available at Walmart, Target, and even some gas stations, portable chargers are convenient and small enough to fit in a pocket or purse. Charge it the night before, and you’ll be on your way to Snapchatting every second of the day. HOW DO I GET THERE? Coming from Bryan or College Station, the town of Snook is about a 20 minute drive. Plan ahead your transportation situation so you know exactly how you are getting there as well as getting home. Chilifest has done a commendable job in providing areas to park your car as well as taxi services and cooperating with Texas A&M University’s student organization Carpool. Utilize one of these resources, and stay safe. EXERCISE CARE WITH ALCOHOL You are at a country music festival. It is almost a given alcohol will be present, especially with Miller Lite being a huge sponsor of this charitable event. Drink responsibly and safely, so you can enjoy every minute of the 12-hour days.

Sundae Drive, a punk band with new wave and indie rock influences, is announcing the release of their latest CD at a concert at Revolution Bar & Cafe March 31. This band from Houston has been playing together since 2005 and is known for songs filled with depth and good, old-fashioned angst. Common themes in A Sundae Drive tracks, that fans can’t get enough of, are love and lost, childhood mishaps and like any good punk band, politics and justice. Although they stick to common themes for their genre, they do it with such passion that sets them apart from other bands.

A Sundae Drive released their first EP, “You’re Gonna Get Me,” in 2011 followed by their first full album, “The Senseless and the Sound,” in 2014. The band has used these two releases to perform at multiple venues in places like Houston and Austin, and now they will make their place in Bryan to celebrate their brand new album release.

Y!

“An eye-popping production” David Lyman, Detroit Free Press

The new album puts the band on track to have released new music every three years since the release of their first official EP, and it is possible this could become a trend or target timeline for A Sundae Drive. The Revolution Bar & Cafe hosts bands of this kind of music often, and the atmosphere compliments the music in a way that provides the opportunity to focus on the sounds and lyrics, which music lovers will really appreciate. A Sundae Drive will be accompanied by two guests which include The Wheel Workers from Houston and locals, The Ex-Optimists. Both of these bands are friends of A Sundae Drive and of the indie rock genre. Similar genres each with a unique sound make these great bands to pair with A Sundae Drive as well as the vibe at Revolution. The concert will begin at Revolution Bar & Cafe on March 31 at 10pm. It is not required to buy tickets beforehand. Plan your Friday night now to enjoy this exciting live performance and maybe pick up their new CD while you are there. If you have ever been to Revolution before and enjoyed your experience, this event is one you won’t want to miss.

roccoli Cheese Soup is a dish near-and-dear to my heart. It has been my number one favorite soup from the time I was child to this very day. To tell you truth, I didn’t even care for broccoli as a kid, but there was just something about that creamy cheesy base, variegated with tender, bright green, teensy bits of broccoli that reeled me in. Unfortunately, my sweet mom never attempted a homemade version and the store-bought stuff left a vast amount to be desired. It was a special treat for me if my family went out for dinner, and a restaurant had it on the menu. I would order it every single time. This was one of the first recipes I was determined to master after beginning my culinary adventures as a stay-at-home mom. I am happy to report — this one is a keeper. In my version of Broccoli Cheese Soup, freshly steamed, perfectly cooked broccoli is chopped into tiny bite-sized pieces and mixed into a simple soup base of onion, chicken broth and creamy half and half. It is perfected via the addition of freshly grated Sharp Cheddar and melty Colby Jack cheese. For the perfect lunch or dinnertime pairing, serve alongside TAK’s Chopped Ham and Gruyere Melt. INGREDIENTS: • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1 yellow onion, finely chopped • 6 tablespoons unbleached all-purpose flour • 2 1/2 cups unsalted chicken broth • 3 1/2 cups half and half, warmed • 1 1/4 cups freshly grated Sharp Cheddar cheese(plus extra for garnish, if desired) • 1 cup freshly grated Colby Jack cheese • 1 1/4 teaspoons Kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper • 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce • Pinch of granulated sugar • 2 crowns of broccoli, trimmed, steamed and chopped (see “Perfectly Steamed Broccoli” at www.TheAnthonyKitchen. com for further cooking instructions) METHOD: In an large pot or Dutch oven over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Do not allow to butter to brown. Add onion and sauté 6-8 minutes, or until softened. Sprinkle flour evenly over the onions and stir until coated, about 2 minutes. Add the chicken broth, a splash at a time, stirring after each addition until the mixture reaches a consistency similar to pudding. At this time, you may begin streaming in the remaining chicken broth and all of the half and half, stirring all the while. Raise the heat to medium-high and stir until the soup has reached a simmer. Reduce the heat back to medium-low and maintain a simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the soup has thickened slightly. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the cheeses, along with salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce and sugar. Add in the chopped broccoli (you should have about 3 1/2 cups) and stir. Allow to cook for an additional 10 minutes on the stovetop, stirring occasionally. Ladle into bowls, garnish with extra cheddar, serve and enjoy.
