Living a healthy lifestyle is very hard. Between the dieting, the workouts and the daily distractions known as “work” and “a social life,” it can be a chore to find time to do the things you should for your body. HabitMinder is a new app that can help. First off, like other health and fitness apps on the market, it tracks your steps and physical output for the day, even going as far as telling you to get up and be active. What’s really cool about this app is what else it keeps track of. Hydration, breathing, exercise, stretching and standing are just some of the helpful measurements HabitMinder watches for you. Reminders can be set to prompt you to drink more, stand or stretch. This could come in handy if you’re like me and need a little extra motivation to be healthier. The app is free to download and will track up to three habits. Additional habits can be unlocked with in-app purchases, plus a $0.49 monthly subscription fee. If you’re not about that life, choose your three habits wisely. All in all, this app seems pretty beneficial. Other apps can track certain measurements, such as steps and exercise, but this app could help you understand your habits and form a healthier lifestyle.

MOVIE REVIEW

I have never seen a more heartfelt and real animated movie than “Coco.” What does this movie mean for someone like me, a Mexican-American? It means more than some can imagine. It is finally being able to say that a movie is not based on stereotypes. It is finally seeing the real inclusion of the Mexican heritage on the big screen. And Pixar thought of every detail thoroughly, including Spanish dubbed versions and shows with subtitles on them.

Miguel, a young boy who loves to play guitar, is torn between his dream and staying true to his family. He decides to take a leap of faith and pursue his dream of becoming a famous musician. Along the way, he has to overcome obstacles that he did not plan for, and he finds out secrets he did not anticipate. This beautifully crafted, colorful movie really promotes cultural awareness. It is witty as well as family oriented, just like many Mexican families are. Miguel respects his family, but their closemindedness leads him to go out in search of his dream, even without their approval. Usually, I personally do not really like animated movies. Being of Mexican descent, I can tell you that this movie represented my culture in the best way possible. The Day of the Dead was described in such a beautiful, creative manner that even cold hearted folks might shed a tear or two. Although Disney decided to add a 21-minute “Frozen Fever” short prior to the start of the actual movie, the experience of such a greatly planned animated movie really made the wait worth it.

ALBUM REVIEW Chris Stapleton done did it again, folks. With the release of his new album, “From a Room: Volume 2,” Stapleton has solidified his place in country music history, not just as a singer, but a songwriter and a storyteller.

by Justin Walker

“From a Room: Volume 2” contains a variety of songs, ranging from sweet love songs, like “Millionaire,” to powerful, rock-and-roll feelings, like those in “Midnight Train to Memphis,” to songs that just tell a really cool story, like “Tryin’ to Untangle My Mind” and “Scarecrow in the Garden.” Stapleton runs the gamut of emotions and tempos on this album.

ARTIST: Chris Stapleton ALBUM: From a Room: Vol 2 RELEASED: Dec. 1, 2017

There are two songs in particular everyone should listen to. First, “Drunkard’s Prayer” is a very powerful song about a man struggling with the end of a relationship, coupled with a possible case of alcoholism and a strained relationship with God. Stapleton delivers an emotional and moving set of lyrics with his commanding yet gentle voice, telling the story in heartbreaking fashion. Second, “A Simple Song” is about loving life through all the hard times. It tells the story of a man with a lot of financial, family and personal problems, but he loves his life, despite how “everything goes wrong.” Stapleton delivered. It’s sweet, loving, fun, ominous, relaxing, powerful and moving. It’s everything you can ask for in an album. If you were a fan of him before, you’ll love this new set of songs. If you weren’t, you will be.

COLTON FRENCH AT NEW REBUBLIC BREWING COMPANY

Here in the Bryan-College Station area, what is more exciting than country music and beer? Close to nothing. Country music and beer is what makes for a great time in this area. New Republic Brewing Company is bringing on Colton French to perform on December 16, so that patrons can enjoy both at the same time. Founded in 2010 by Dean and Adrienne Brundage and John and Lisa Januskey, New Republic brews craft beer in College Station, Texas. They pride themselves on making just a few beers a year, but they make them with patience. That way, the beers are more tasteful and crisp. Colton French is a singer/songwriter from Kerrville, Texas, who loves country music. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 2016, and he stuck around to work in College Station. He performs at different venues around town. One of his most recent performance was at Revolutions Cafe and Bar, where the audience is always great. Not only does he play his own songs, French also does covers of different classic country artists. New Republic Brewing company will have two craft beers on tap that you need to try. The Pasión Fruit IPA, Farmhouse Mary, Coffee Kadigan, and Nitro RIS are all featured beers at this event. Do not miss out on their amazing tastes that will have you wanting just one more all night. Also featured is a seasonal favorite, Windless Fall. According to New Republic’s website, the beer “starts as our dry, robust porter, Marlinspike. We load it up from there with 500 pounds of roasted puree sweet potatoes to add a unique thickness and sweet body. Skip the desert, it’s too many calories, grab a can.” All pints will be $4 all night. Happy hour is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., where pints are only $3. You never have to worry about running low on beer during this event. Also, parking will be free all night long. If you have kids or pets that you cannot leave at home, or if you do not want to pay for a sitter, then bring them with you. Kids and pets are always welcomed. New Republic Brewing Co. and Colton French both have that welcoming atmosphere that makes these kinds of events more enjoyable. Come out and join the fun with Colton French and his great voice.

SAFE 2 SAVE APP

Gleefully driving home after a date in Dallas, Ashley Lovett came to the end of her playlist on Highway 6. She looked down to adjust her music and suddenly felt a crippling urge to look back at the road. Panic. An 18-wheeler. Swerve. Crash. Trunk-over-hood flip. Glass shattered. Time stopped. On January 5, 2016, Lovett, a sophomore at Texas A&M University, added to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis’ study on distracted driving. The study reports that there are more than 1,000 people injured and 9 people killed in crashes due to distracted driving each day in the United States. The start of Safe2Save Nearly nine months after Lovett’s crash, Marci Corry, College Station resident and mother of two, launched her new app, Safe2Save. “I found myself really bad about texting and driving and I have these two precious kids in my backseat,” Corry said. “Why am I not thinking about them? I had this idea of

Safe2Save and I knew I had to move from idea mode to action mode; I needed to change lives.” Safe2Save operates as a rewards program app to fight against distracted driving. According to the Safe2Save website, the app offers a new perspective and encourages drivers to practice safe driving and earn rewards towards things that matter. Users open the app while driving to receive two points every minute. The points can be redeemed at local businesses such as Chick-fil-a, Mad Taco, Texas Roadhouse and Minuti Coffee for free or discounted menu items. Corry spoke out on the dangers of distracted driving. “We are 23% more likely to crash when driving distracted,” Corry said. “The scary thing is, 85% of the people don’t think they are the problem.” Corry said Safe2Save seeks to emphasize positive rewards instead of intimidating drivers through the scare factor. “The scare factor wears off but

SAFE 2 SAVE local to national,” Corry said. “My goal is to grow across the nation and for people to change their driving patterns. 250 people join Safe2Save each day; I know we can reach our goals.” Laws against distracted driving have been debated for quite some time. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, “In 2017, the Texas Legislature passed a statewide ban on using wireless communications devices for electronic messaging while operating a motor vehicle. Texting, as well as reading or writing email, is prohibited while driving in Texas.” Corry said even though a law stands to stop distracted driving, drivers still struggle to break the habit. “Just knowing it is a law isn’t enough to break peoples’ habits,” Corry said. “Because what happens is people will text low to not get caught and that’s even more dangerous. They have to intrinsically know it’s not worth it and intrinsically realize how dangerous it is.” The City of College Station partnered with Safe2Save, and together, are working to put an end to distracted driving. free Chick-fil-a never wears off,” Corry said.

So what now?

When Lovett heard about Safe2Save, she knew she had to be a part of it.

“Is it really worth it?” – a key feature to the Safe2Save app. This screen allows drivers to view a photo of a loved one to serve as a reminder that sending a quick text is not worth endangering the lives of the ones we love.

Nine months prior to the Safe2Save launch, when Lovett lay bruised and beaten in her hospital bed, she was overcome with joy that she was still alive and told her mom she had to tell people about this. “I am alive and I’m OK; these people are helping me even though it’s my own fault,” Lovett said. “I need to talk to people about this and I need to promote safe driving.” Lovett kept her promise and joined Corry to serve as Safe2Save’s first ambassador by promoting the app to student organizations, local businesses and Chamber of Commerce members. Moving forward Safe2Save started in Bryan and College Station and has continued to grow to Madisonville, Waco, Midland and Odessa. In the next couple weeks, Safe2Save hopes to launch in Cypress and Jersey Village. Corry dreams of the places Safe2Save can grow. “I want to make the leap from

Lovett explained how her whole family uses Safe2Save since her crash. “My mom actually has a picture of my car from the accident as her background on Safe2Save,” Lovett said. “So that way when she is tempted to look at her phone, she sees the picture and knows, ‘OK this was terrible and this was a bad accident and I don’t want this to happen again.’” All drivers can make a difference. Even you. Corry implores drivers to recognize the value of life. “We have to lay down the right to be productive in that moment and make the choice to drive safe,” Corry said. “Life matters.” So ask yourself, will you text and drive? “Is it really worth it?” Download Safe2Save and take a stand against distracted driving.

GIVING BACK

WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

When it comes to the holidays, people are all about giving. Family and friends are important, but sometimes it is also good to give back to the community. Keep the spirit alive this Christmas by going out to the community and lending out a helping hand.

to help run a donation bucket for The Salvation Army. Funds raised by this Campaign will assist families in need throughout the year. Anyone can volunteer to be a bell ringer: clubs, individuals, churches, etc. You can go to the United Way website to apply, http:// www.uwbv.org/volunteer.

The Bryan-College Station area prides itself on being a great community to give back to. Below are awesome opportunities that can really make a difference in someone’s life.

You can be the hope a child needs during the holiday season. CASA Voices for Children provides a one-onone advocacy program for abused and neglected children in the Brazos Valley. These kids have usually been removed from their families and put in foster care. CASA is running a program called 12 Days of Christmas, and their goal is to raise $12,000 in the first 12 days of December. Your donation gives a voice to every child in foster care in Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, and Madison counties. You can donate or learn more at http://vfcbrazos.org.

The Salvation Army has been running a program called The Angel Tree for 38 years. The tree is located at the Post Oak Mall off of Harvey Rd. in College Station. Essentially, it is a tree of giving. The tree has angel ornaments that have the name of a child written on it, along with something that child would like for Christmas. You then purchase it and turn in the gift back to the the location of the tree. If you prefer to take action in a different way, the United Way of Brazos Valley is asking for Salvation Army Bell ringer volunteers. These volunteers would stand outside of local businesses and organizations

This season, we hope that you take the time to give back to the community. Giving back does not always have to have a monetary value. These are only a few options, but anything helps. Remember to always be thankful for what you have, and be conscious of the less fortunate.
