s wäre vielleicht ein wenig zu viel verlangt, auf wenigen Seiten all das vorzustellen, was Malchin und die Region der Mecklenburgischen Schweiz so schön und liebenswert macht.
Denn lohnenswert ist sie allemal, die Reise in das kleine Städtchen, gelegen im Zentrum MecklenburgVorpommerns auf halber Strecke zwischen Rostock und Neubrandenburg.
Denn ganz gleich, ob man sich mit der Vielfalt der sehenswerten historischen Gebäude, mit den landschaftlichen Reizen einer nahezu unberührt anmutenden Natur, den Festen und Feiern hierzulande oder schlicht und ergreifend mit dem alltäglichen Leben der Menschen beschäftigt, jedes dieser Themen böte für sich schon genügendStoff für ein umfangreiches Buch.

Und dennoch wollen wir es trotzdem versuchen, Ihnen Malchin und Umgebung mit diesem Beitrag ein Stück näher zu bringen und bei allen, die unsere Region noch nicht kennen, Geschmack darauf zu machen, dieses idyllische Städtchen im Herzen der Mecklenburgischen Schweiz einmal zu besuchen.

Das will aber noch lange nicht heißen, dass es in unserem schönen und geschichtsträchtigen Städtchen nicht so Einiges zu sehen und zu entdecken gibt. Denn schließlich blickt Malchin auf eine beinahe 775 jährige Geschichte zurück und war von 1618 bis 1916 neben Sternberg Tagungsort desStändischen Landtages.

The journey to the small town, which is situated in the centre of Mecklenburg West-Pomerania and half-way between Rostock and Neubrandenburg, is certainly rewarding.
It doesn`t matter whether one starts with the variety of the historic buildings worth seeing, the countryside appeal of an almost untouched charming nature, the festivals and events in the region or simply the everyday life of the people, everyone of these themes offer enough detail for an extensive book.

However, we will try to give you an idea of Malchin and ist wonderfull surroundings. For all of you who do not know the region this booklet will give you a taste of this ichy small town in the heart of “Mecklenburg Switzerland” so that you would like to pay us a visit.
ith 8,000 inhabitants Malchin does not really belong to the large towns of our FederalState.
But that does not mean that there is nothing worth seeing or discovering in our beautiful and historic town. Malchin looks back onto 775 years of history from 1618 to 1916 as well as Sternberg, it was seat of the standing provincial parliament.

as markanteste, bedeutendste und nicht nur wegen seiner Größe sondern vor allem wegen seiner Schönheit alles andere überragende Bauwerk der Backsteingotik hat seinen Platz direkt neben dem Rathaus im Malchiner Zentrum: die Kirche Sankt-Johannis und Maria. Hier einen Halt einzulegen ist geradezu ein Muss für jeden Malchin- Besucher. Der Bau der Kirche begann Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts. Später kam derTurm hinzu, der einen prächtigen Ausblick auf die Stadt und die schöne Landschaft der MecklenburgischenSchweiz bietet. Zu den kunsthistorischen Schätzen der Johannis-Kirche zählen der Marienaltar in der gleichnamigen Kapelle und die Friese Orgel, die nach aufwendiger Restaurierung Jahr für Jahr bei Orgelkonzerten unzählige Besucher mit ihrem herrlichen Klang erfreut. Ein Besuch der Kirche lohnt sich aber auch aus einem anderen Grund. In der ehemaligen Sakristei des Gotteshauses ist die Malchiner Stadtinformation untergebracht. Sie ist ganzjährig geöffnet und die Mitarbeiter sind Gästen gern dabei behilflich, den Urlaub bei uns so schön wie nur möglich zu verbringen. he most distinctive and important building in town, not just because of its size but also due to its beauty, that towers above all others, is situated right next-door to the town hall in the town centre: the church of St Johannis and Maria. To stop here is a must for every visitor to Malchin.The construction of the church began at the end of the 14th century. Later the tower, from which there is a marvellous view over the town and “Mecklenburg Switzerland�. The Maria altar in the chapel of the same name and the Friese organ belong to the art historical treasures of the church.
The Friese organ, after a complete restoration, gives joy with its glorious tones in organ concerts year after year to countless visitors. A visit to the church is rewarding for another reason because in the former sacristy the Malchin Town Information Office is to be found. It is open the whole year round and the employees gladly help their guests to make their holidays with us as nice as possible. Current events, sites worth visiting, help with accommodation and guided tours – all that is on offer in the InformationOffice. ur wenige Schritte entfernt vom imposantesten Gebäude der Stadt, der Sankt-Johannis und Maria Kirche, hat das Malchiner Rathaus seinen Platz. Es ist Sitz der Verwaltung des Amtes Malchin am Kummerower See, zu dem neben Malchin die Orte Basedow, Duckow, Faulenrost, Gielow, Kummerow und Neukalen gehören. Erbaut worden ist das Rathaus in der Zeit von 1925 bis 1927 nachdem das vorherige bei einem verheerenden Brand völlig zerstört wurde. Prunkstück des Rathauses ist der Rathausaal mit seinen 72 Zunftzeichen. Sie geben Aufschluss darüber, welche Gewerke und Gewerbe zu Zeiten der Erbauung des Gebäudes in unserer Stadt vertreten waren. Aufwendig restauriert worden ist das Gebäude in den Jahren 1995 und 1996. Ohnehin scheinen die Malchiner eineSchwäche für Rathäuser zu haben. In der Geschichte der Stadt ist es das mittlerweile fünfte. Ein herrlicher Ausblick auf den Kummerower und Malchiner See und die Hügellandschaft der Mecklenburgischen Schweiz bietet sich vom Turm des Rathauses. Über einen Fahrstuhl und eine Wendeltreppe ist er weitaus einfacher zu erklimmen als der benachbarte Kirchturm. Kleine Hinweisschilder – verfasst in plattdeutscher Sprache – erleichtern dieOrientierung beim Blick über dieStadt.
Z
ur einstigen Stadtbefestigung von Malchin gehörten neben der Stadtmauer und dem Fangelturm auch vier Stadttore. Von den einst vier Toren sind heute noch zwei erhalten. Das Kalensche Tor und das Steintor. Wie Fangelturm und Stadtmauer sind auch die beiden Tore in den vergangenen Jahren mit viel Aufwand und Liebe zum historischen Detail restauriert worden. Dabei ist im Steintor auch ein kleiner Raum ausgebaut worden. Hier kann man sich zu Vereinssitzungen und Familienfeiern treffen.
Malchiner Rathaus
Den Malchiner Wasserturm findet man am Ortsausgang in Richtung Basedow.
Der Malchiner Rathaussaal ist durch seine 72 Zunftzeichen bekannt. Sie geben Aufschluss darüber, welche Gewerbe und Gewerke zu Zeiten des Rathauses im Jahr 1925 bis 1927 in Malchin vertreten waren.

nly a few steps away from the most magnificent building in Malchin, the Church of St Johannis and Maria, is the town hall. It is the seat of the administration of the Department of `Malchin am Krummower See`. Beside Malchin also Basedow, Duckow, Faulenrost, Gielow, Kummerow and Neukalen are parts of this district. It was built between 1925 and 1927 after the predecessor was destroyed in a catastrophic fire.The showpiece of the town hall is the council chamber with its 72 guild symbols. It gives an insight into which trades and crafts were active in the town at the time of building of the town hall. The building was completely restored in the years 1995 and 1996. In any event the inhabitants of Malchin seem to have a weakness for town halls as this is now the fifth in the history of the town. You can have a marvellous view over the lakes and hills of the “Mecklenburg Switzerland” from the town hall tower. By means of a lift and a spiral staircase it is far easier to climb up the town hall tower of the church next door. Small signs – in Low German – facilitate the orientation when looking over the town.

part from the town wall and the Fangel Tower, four gates also belonged to the fortifications of Malchin. From these four gates there are two still in existence today; the Kalensch Gate and the Stone Gate. Like the Fangel Tower the two gates in recent years have been restored with much expense and love to historical detail. Thereby a small room was built into the Stone Gate. This can be used for club meetings and family parties.

er in Malchin auf Entdeckungstour ist, der sollte es auf keinen Fall versäumen mal im Museum in der einstigen Stadtmühle vorbei zu schauen. Die engagierten Mitglieder des Museumsvereins haben hier viel Wissenswertes und Informatives über die Malchiner Geschichte zusammen getragen. Ein großer Teil der Ausstellung ist hier dem wohl bekanntesten Sohn der Stadt gewidmet – Siegfried Marcus, der 1831 in Malchin geboren wurde. Marcus gilt bis heute als genialer Ingenieur und Erfinder.Auch wenn sich dieGelehrten darüber streiten, ob er nun der erste war, der ein benzinbetriebenes Fahrzeug auf die Straße gebracht hat oder auch nicht: eines steht auf jeden Fall fest: dem rührigen Forscher und Erfinder, der auch lange am kaiserlichen Hofe in Wien tätig war, kommen erhebliche Verdienste bei der Entwicklung des Automobils zu. Ein originalgetreuer Nachbau des MarcusWagens und viele andere Patente von ihm sind in den Museumsmauern zu bestaunen. Die Verdienste von Siegfried Marcus würdigen die Stadtväter noch auf andere Weise. Eine Schule und der kleine Marktplatz im Stadtzentrum tragen seinen Namen.

in weitere kleine „Attraktion“ hat die Stadt direkt hinter der Kirche in der Schweriner Straße zu bieten. Wobei „klein“ durchaus wörtlich zu nehmen ist. Denn auf gerade mal zwölf Quadratmetern befindet sich im Haus Nummer 3 das wohl kleinste Kinderbuchmuseum Deutschlands. In wechselnden Ausstellungen gibt hier der Malchiner Rudolf Wessel immer wieder interessante Einblicke in dieWelt und dieGeschichte der Kinderliteratur.
A
m Ortsausgang in Richtung Basedow thront ein weiteres markantes Bauwerk über der Stadt: der Wasserturm. Für die Wasserversorgung der Malchiner hat er allerdings keine Bedeutung mehr.Seit Jahren schon ist er außer Dienst gestellt. Ein Förderverein hat ihn Mitte der 90 ger Jahre äußerlich restaurieren lassen. Mittlerweile befindet sich derTurm in Privatbesitz.
Auf jeden Fall lohnenswert ist ein Besuch im Malchiner Stadtmuseum. Es ist in der Mühle beheimatet.
CULTURE
W
hoever is on a tour of discovery in Malchin should, on no account, miss out the museum in the former town mill. The committed employees of the Museum Society have collected much worth knowing and that is informative about the history of Malchin.A large part of the exhibition is dedicated to the probably most well-known son of the town, Siegfried Marcus who was born in Malchin in 1831. Marcus is still today considered to have been a brilliant engineer and inventor. Even when the experts fight over whether or not he was the first to bring a petrol driven vehicle onto the road, one thing can be said for certain: the quiet researcher and inventor who was also active for a long time at the Emperor`sCourt inVienna, can claim a lot of the credit for the development of the automobile. A re-make based on the original plans of the Marcus car and many of his other patents can be admired in the museum. The town council also acknowledges the merits ofSiegfried Marcus in another manner.
A school and the small market-square in the town centre are named after him.

he town has another small “attraction” on offer directly behind the church in the Schwerin Street. Whereby, “small” can be taken literally.Then, on exactly 12 square metres in house number 3 is the probably smallest children`s book museum in Germany. In an ever changing exhibition Rudolf Wessel from Malchin gives interesting insights into the world and history of children`s literature.

t the exit in the direction of Basedow another distinctive building dominates the town – the water tower. This has no meaning any more for the water supply of the town having been out of use for years now. A society for the preservation of the tower has, since the middle of the 90s, restored the outside. The tower is, however, now privately owned. It‘s worth visiting the museum of Malchin which is situated in the mill.

iel zu entdecken gibt es nicht nur in Malchin selbst. Gerade die wunderschöne Hügel- und Seenlandschaft der Mecklenburgischen Schweiz, die die Stadt umgibt, ist es, die Jahr für Jahr Tausende von Touristen in die Region lockt. Denn gerade wer nicht den ganz großen Trubel will, wie er an der nicht weit entfernten Ostsee oder der benachbarten Müritzregion geboten wird, der findet bei uns hinreichend Möglichkeiten für einen ruhigen und entspannten Urlaub. Und Angebote für einen abwechslungsreichenAufenthalt gibt es wahrhaftig zur Genüge. Ein Blick auf die Landkarte lässt unschwer erkennen: Mit der Peene sowie dem Malchiner und dem KummerowerSee bietet die Region ideale Bedingungen für den Wassersport. Immer wieder kommen Touristen ins Schwärmen, wenn sie mit Kanu oder Segelboot die von herrlicher Natur umgebenen Wasserreviere erkunden. Auf den Ausbau des maritimen Tourismus haben auch die Malchiner Stadtväter in den vergangenen Jahren großes Augenmerk gelegt. Mit dem Malchiner Wasserwanderrastplatz Koesters Eck, dem Sportboothafen in Salem und der neuen Marina in Malchin haben Freizeitkapitäne gleich drei Möglichkeiten bei uns vor Anker zu gehen. Und natürlich verfügen alle Anlegestellen auch über die übliche Infrastruktur wie sanitäre Anlagen, Wasser- und Elektrostationen sowie Gastronomie.

nd wer kein Boot sein Eigen nennt? Kein Problem. Sowohl in Malchin als auch in Salem können Boote jeder Art ausgeliehen werden. Zu den idyllischsten Ausflugszielen in Malchins Umgebung gehört ohnehin das kleine Fischerdorf Salem. Wer auf dem Wasserweg hier her kommt, den begrüßt schon an der Hafeneinfahrt ein stattlicher Geselle, von dem man aus gegebener Entfernung durchaus annehmen könnte, dass er wohl gleich ins erfrischende Nass des Kummerower Sees springen wird. Mit dem Sprung wird es allerdings nichts. Der gute Mann ist aus Holz und ein Kunstwerk, das auf dem besten Wege ist, zum Salemer Markenzeichen zu werden.
Wo der hölzerne Geselle zum Kopfsprung ansetzt, sollte man wegen des regen Bootsverkehrs besser nicht in den See springen. Viel besser aufgehoben ist man da schon am benachbarten Badestrand. Apropos Markenzeichen. Das ist auch der Fisch, den es frisch gefangen oder auch geräuchert bei den Salemer Fischern zu kaufen gibt und den man unbedingt probieren sollte. Morgen für Morgen fahren die Fischer raus auf den Kummerower See und hoffen dabei natürlich immer auf möglichst volle Netze.

ie Region erkunden kann man natürlich auch noch auf vielen anderen Wegen – auf Rad- und Wanderwegen zum Beispiel.VielGeld ist in den vergangenen Jahren in den Ausbau des Rad- und Wanderwegenetzes investiert worden.Gut angelegtesGeld wie sich längst herausgestellt hat. Denn gerade in den Sommermonaten herrscht Hochbetrieb auf den Radwegen, die an Kummerower und Malchiner See entlang führen. Ein ganz besonderes Abenteuer wird auf der Strecke von Dargun nach Salem angeboten. Auf einer Draisine kann man hier auf 17 Kilometern Länge die Schönheit des Kummerower Sees genießen und die sportliche Anstregung auch gleich noch mit Kunstgenuss kombinieren. Gleich vier Kunstwerke sind entlang derStrecke zu bestaunen.

here is a lot to discover not just in Malchin itself. The wonderful hill and lake countryside of “Mecklenburg Switzerland” which surrounds the town draws thousands of tourists year after year. Because those who do not want the hurly-burly to be found on the not too distant Baltic coast or the neighbouring Müritz region, find enough possibilities for a quiet and relaxing holiday. And there are really enough offers for a varied stay. A glance at the map shows that with the Peene, the Malchin and Kummerow lakes the region offers ideal conditions for water sports. Again and again tourists rave about how they can explore the water region with its wonderful nature by canoe or sailing boat. The Malchin Town Council has paid great attention to the extension of water-bound tourism over the past few years. With the waterway picnic area “Koesters Eck”, the sport boat harbour in Salem and the new marina in Malchin leisure captains have three possibilities to cast anchor in our region. Naturally all three mooring areas have the usual infrastructure such as sanitary facilities, gastronomy as well as water and electricity stations.

hat if you don`t own a boat? That`s no problem. In Malchin as well as in Salem boats of every type can be rented out.The small fishing village of Salem belongs to the most idyllic outing goals in Malchin`s surroundings. Whoever comes here by water will be greeted at the harbour entrance by a splendid figure which, from a certain distance, appears to be on the point of diving head-first into the refreshing wetness of Kummerow Lake. However he will not be diving.The figure is made out of wood and is a piece of artwork that is well on the way to being Salem`s trademark. Malchin hat auch ein eigenes Fahrgastschiff – die „Veritas“. Die startet in der Sommersaison zu Rundfahrten auf dem Kummeower See. Tagesfahrten führen sogar bis zur InselUsedom. Malchin has it‘s own passanger ship called „Veritas“. It starts in sommer season with round trips on Kummerow lake. Day trips guide you up to the isleUsedom.
It is advisable, due to the heavy boat traffic, not to enter the water at the position where the wooden figure is about to dive in. It is much better to do that at the neighbouring bathing beach. With regards to trademarks, there is also the fish which is either freshly caught or smoked and is sold by the Salem fishermen and which should really be tried. Day after day the fishermen travel out onto Kummerow Lake and naturally hope for full nets.

he region can also be explored by many other means. On hiking trails or cycle paths for example. Much money has been invested in recent years in the expansion of the hiking trail network. Money well spent as has been proved over the years. In the summer season there is heavy traffic on the cycle paths which lead one beside the Kummerow and Malchin lakes. A very special adventure is on offer on the route from Dargun to Salem. It is possible to enjoy the beauty of Kummerow Lake on trolley (draisine) track some 17 kilometres long and to combine sporty exercise with artistic enjoyment. There are four works of art to admire along the track.

he village of Remplin is a special rarity for the culturalhistorically interested visitor. Apart from the oldest observatory in Mecklenburg (1801), there are further contemporary structural witnesses of the count Hahn family in the palace grounds designed by P.J. Lenne.
HIGHLIGHTS
W
o fleißig gearbeitet wird, da darf natürlich auch mal so richtig gefeiert werden. Und davon verstehen die Malchiner nun wahrlich etwas. Die größte Fete des Jahres steigt traditionell Ende April/Anfang Mai: das Mecklenburger Motorradtreffen, das Malchin längst weit über die Stadtmauern hinaus bekannt gemacht hat. Man kann dieses Gefühl nur schwerlich in Worte fassen. Es ist der Duft von Benzin, es sind dieGeräusche von schweren Motorrädern, es ist das ganze Drumherum, das die Malchiner und mit ihnen viele Menschen aus nah und fern seit nunmehr dreizehn Jahren immer wieder in ihren Bann zieht. Wenn Rauchschwaden aufsteigen, die Motoren der Maschinen durch die Stadt dröhnen, Leute ausgelassen tagelang feiern - dann herrscht in Malchin dieses besondere Flair - dieses Flair des Mecklenburger Motorradtreffens, das man ganz einfach selbst miterleben muss, um überhaupt eine Vorstellung davon zu bekommen, wie fasziniert die Menschen von diesem Ereignis sind. Mal ganz ehrlich, wann ist der Malchiner Markt so knüppeldicke voll wie zur Bikerhochzeit? Hunderte drängeln sich jedes Jahr vor dem Rathaus, um ja nicht zu verpassen, wie sich das frisch vermählte Bikerpaar nach der Trauung auf dem Marktplatz den Hochzeitskuss gibt. Und was ist es für ein herrliches und imposantes Bild, wenn Tausende von Motorrädern an derWald-Arena im Hainholz zu ihrer Ausfahrt in die Mecklenburgische Schweiz starten. Wieviel Kraft, Zeit, Mühe und natürlich auch Geld die Organisatoren desTreffens immer wieder auf´s Neue in das Programm der Riesenparty stecken, kann man sicherlich nur ansatzweise erahnen.

here people work hard, there they will naturally celebrate hard. And the people of Malchin know a lot about that. The biggest festival of the year, the Mecklenburg Motor-bike Meet takes place at the end of April/ beginning of May and has made Malchin famous far outside the town walls. It is difficult to put this feeling into words. It is the smell of petrol, it is the sounds of heavy engines, it is the whole shooting-match which has captivated the inhabitants of Malchin and with them the many people from near and far for the past 13 years. Where clouds of smoke rise, the engines of the machines rumble through the town, people celebrate happily day after day - then this special flair reigns in Malchin - this flair of the Mecklenburg Motor-bike Meet which one must experience for oneself in order to have something of an idea of how fascinated people are by this event. When is the Malchin market-square so crowded as it is for a biker-marriage? Hundreds crowd, year after year in front of the town hall so as not to miss how the freshly married couple seal the celebration with a kiss. And what a splendid and imposing picture it is when thousands of bikes start on their trip from the Wald-Arena in Hainholz for the “Mecklenburg Switzerland”. How much strength, time, effort and of course money the two instigators of the meet put again and again into the gigantic party can only be guessed at.

ie für das Bikertreffen gibt es auch für das Malchiner Altstadtfest einen festen Termin: jedes Jahr am letzten Juni-Wochenende. Dann verwandelt sich das ganze Stadtzentrum rings um Kirche und Rathaus in einen riesigen Festplatz. Zu den besonderen Höhepunkten des dreitägigen Spektakels gehört das traditionelle Konzert der jungen Künstler der Malchiner Regionalmusikschule. Es ist schon faszinierend, wie die Jungen und Mädchen ihre Instrumente beherrschen oder in historischer Tracht mit mittelalterlichen Tänzen begeistern. Nicht von ungefähr gehört die Regionalmusikschule zu den kulturellen Aushängeschildern unserer Stadt. Wie bunt und vielfältig das MalchinerVereinsleben ist, kann man zum Altstadtfest beim großen Festumzug erleben. Es gibt kaum einen Verein, der sich nicht in diesen Reigen einreiht. Und damit noch lange nicht genug. Auch Schulen, Kindergärten, Jugendklubs und zahlreiche Malchiner Firmen beteiligen sich an dem Ummarsch durch die Stadt. Lautstark angeführt wird der Umzug von den Musikern der Feuerwehr-Schalmeienkapelle, die zweifellos auch zu den musikalischen Werbeträgern Malchins gehört. Davon zeugen zahlreiche Preise, die das Orchester in den vergangenen Jahren bei Wettbewerben in MecklenburgVorpommern, aber auch auf Bundesebene gewonnen hat. Abgerundet wird das dreitägige Fest durch unzählige Programme im Stadtzentrum, bei denen in aller Regel bis in den frühen Morgen gefeiert wird.

benso ausgelassen geht es einen Monat später – also Ende Juli – beim Lichterfest zu. Dann wird rund um den Kummerower See gefeiert. Der Publikumsmagnet schlechthin ist die Wahl der Lichterfest-Königin. Jahr für Jahr sind es tausende Menschen, die die Kür der Königin erleben.
Um Amt und Würden bewerben sich immer wieder viele junge Mädels und Frauen aus der Region. Und glauben Sie: die Mecklenburgische Schweiz hat in dieser Hinsicht Einiges zu bieten. Gefragt ist bei der Wahl nicht nur gutes Aussehen sondern auch Köpfchen. Schließlich vertritt die Lichterfest-Königin die Region für ein Jahr auf Tourismusmessen und bei vielen öffentlichen Auftritten. Wenn am See gefeiert wird, dann drehen sich natürlich auch viele festliche Aktivitäten rund um´s Wasser. Dazu gehören das Drachenbootrennen in Salem, der Surfermarathon und selbstverständlich auch die aktionsgeladenen Darbietungen der Wasserski-Sportler. Ein imposantes Feuerwerk, das an verschiedenen Orten rund um den See gezündet wird, ist der krönende Höhepunkt der Feierlichkeiten und macht dem Namen des Festes – Lichterfest – alle Ehre.

on Siegfried Marcus haben wir Ihnen schon berichtet. Fehlen darf dabei natürlich nicht, dass zu Ehren des großen Malchiner Erfinders alljährlich im September ein Oldtimer-Treffen in derStadt veranstaltet wird. Organisator des Treffens ist der – wie könnte er anders heißen –Oldtimerverein Marcus. Freuen dürfen sich darauf besonders Malchins Bürgermeister und Bürgervorsteher. Zum Auftakt des Festes werden sie mit einer noblen Karosse von anno dazumal vom Rathaus abgeholt und dann zum Festplatz in die Malchiner Hainholz-Arena chauffiert. Den ganzen Tag über stehen die altgedienten Autos hier in Reih und Glied und werden dann von vielen Besuchern bestaunt und bewundert. Doch nicht nur das. Auch eine Jury nimmt die Oldtimer fachmännisch unter die Lupe und vergibt alljährlich einen Preis für das schönste historischeGefährt.

ust as for the Biker Meet there is also a fixed date for the Town Centre Festival: each year on the last weekend in June.Then the whole town centre round the church and the town-hall turns into a huge fairground. One of the special highlights of the three-day spectacle is the traditional concert given by the young artists of the Malchin Regional Music School. It is really fascinating to see how the youngsters master their instruments or dance in medieval costume. Not for nothing is the Regional Music School on of the cultural advertisements of the town. What is colourful and numerous in Malchin`s club life can be seen in the festival procession of theTown Centre Festival.There is scarcely a club that is not represented in this roundelay. And that is not the finish. Schools, kindergartens, youth clubs and countless Malchin firms also take part in the procession through the town.The procession is led – loudly – by the Fire brigade- school band which, without doubt, belongs to the musical advertisements of Malchin. This is proven by the numerous prizes which the orchestra has won in recent years in competitions not only in Mecklenburg West-Pomerania but also on a Federal level. The three-day festival is rounded off by countless programmes in the town centre which, in the rule, last until the early hours of the morning.

t is celebrated just as happily a month later – that is at the end of July - during the Festival of Lights.Then it is partied round the Kummerow Lake. The definite crowd-puller is the election of the Queen of Lights. Each year thousands of people experience the election of the queen.
Many young girls and women from the region apply for the position. And please believe “Mecklenburg Switzerland” has in this respect something to offer. For the election not just good looks are wanted but also intelligence, because the Festival of Lights Queen will represent the region for a year on tourist fairs and in many official appearances. When it is celebrated round the lake, then naturally many events take place on the water. To these activities belong the dragon boat races in Salem, the surfing marathon and, of course, the full of action exhibition of the water-skiers. An imposing fire-work display which is lit at various places around the lake is the crowning highlight of the festivities and allows the Festival of Lights to live up to ist name.

e have already said something about Siegfried Marcus. However it cannot be missed out to report that in honour of the great Malchin inventor an old-timer meeting takes place every year in September. The organiser of the meeting is – how could it be otherwise – the Marcus Old-Timer Club. Malchin`s town mayor and town director can really be happy. For the opening of the meeting they are collected from the town hall in an ancient limousine and then driven to the fairground in the Malchin Hainholz-Arena.The old timers stand in rows the whole day and are admired by many visitors. But that is not all - a jury also inspects the oldtimers professionally and gives a prize every year for the finest historical vehicle.
