According to Dry, a measuring device shows that over 3 000 liters of water per hour runs down Riana Street. “The matter is really unfortunate, especially when there is a drought in the country. Internal investigations are ongoing to determine what caused the delay. MILLIONS of litres of drinkable water, enough to fill a dam, spills from a broken pipe connected to a water meter at 3 Riana Street in Naudeville, Welkom. Concerned resident, Bakkies Dry, told Vista of his frustration of not receiving any response from the Matjhabeng Local Municipality’s engineering department after reporting the leak several times. Dry said he has lost count of the number of times he has reported the broken pipe, which is connected to the water meter to his house. He said he even informed municipal workers, who recently fixed another broken pipe in his immediate vicinity Z on the corner of Susaar and Riana Street Z about the leakage. “I tried everything possible. I phoned the engineering department to fix the leak, but nothing has been done,” said Dry. This failure by the workers of the Matjhabeng’s engineering department is despite the fact that the cash-strapped municipality battles to pay a bill of R1,1 billion to the supplier, Sedibeng Water. THE Welkom Police have encouraged learners to report bullying at school and to speak out against it. This call was made at the launch of the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children at the Welkom Central Park on Wednesday (25/11). Const. Sharon Mokwena and Const. Mohanoe Ramohapeloa explained to learners that bullying was a form of abuse. They encouraged the learners to report and talk about bullying. Mokwena said that to report bullying will ensure that it will be dealt with. She further encouraged learners and parents to report such cases to the police. “You must report bullying behaviour at schools to the authorities and to the police. Sy het nie geskroom om kontrakte te sluit met onder meer regeringsinstellings, universiteite, die Lejweleputswa munisipaliteit, Eskom, PUM en Seta nie. Haar motto was vooruitgang en vernuwing. Onder dié kalm, saggeaarde vrou van staal het die kollege gegroei van 1 500 studente tot sowat 11 000 aanstaande jaar. Die kollege het 237 personeellede. Fourie het in 1979 haar B.Com.-graad behaal en ’n jaar daarna haar onderwysdiploma. In 1987 het sy haar B.Ed-graad behaal en in 1993 haar M.Ed. In 1997 het sy haar doktorale graad verwerf. Haar tesis het gehandel oor geslagstereotipes en die invloed van vroue in bestuursposte. Vroeg in die jare 80 het sy onder meer by die Hoërskool Unitas skool gehou en by ’n ouditeursfirma gewerk, voordat sy as dosent by die Welkom-kollege aangestel is. In 2002 is sy as hoof van die Welkom-kollege aangestel en in 2003 as hoof van die Goldfields-kollege.
Prinsipaal lê die tuig neer Molly Green DIE persoonlike groei wat sy by die Goudveld- tegniese en beroepsopleidingkollege ervaar het, is een van die hoogtepunte van haar lewe, sê dr. Lynette Fourie, prinsipaal van die kollege. Sy lê die einde van die jaar die tuig neer. Vooruitgang en vernuwing kenmerk haar era as prinsipaal. “Ek het ’n formidabele span gehad. Sonder hulle sou ek nie maklik die mas opgekom het nie,” sê Fourie. Toe sy in 1996 as prinsipaal van die kollege aangestel is, was sy een van vyf vroulike prinsipale by 152 kolleges in die land. In 1996 was daar sowat 1 500 studente. Volgende jaar sal daar meer as 11 000 studente wees. Sy sê sy was gedurende haar tyd aan die stuur op vooruitgang en vernuwing ingestel. Die Welkom-kollege was ook een van die eerste kolleges wat Engels as administratiewe en onderrigtaal gevestig het. Fourie was onder meer in 1975 vir ses weke in Singapoer waar sy in personeelbestuur klas gegee het, In 1998 was sy op ’n feitesending in

Wim is in Junie 2014 ná ’n stryd teen kanker dood. “Hy het my geïnspireer. Hy het geskryf en geskilder. “Hy was ’n inspirasie vir almal wat hom geken het. Hy was iemand wat ooit opgegee het nie.” Lynette het heelwat projekte waarmee sy haar ná haar aftrede besig gaan hou. Daar is die huisie op Philippolis wat sy gerestoureer het, en die vestiging van ’n labirint om mense met uitdagings te help. Sy gaan ook aanhou met wyle ds. Wim se blog, ’n Oopoogreis. “Ek het ook twee jaar gelede aan ’n boek oor vroue en leierskap begin skryf.” Dit was ook deel van haar doktorale verhandeling. “Daar is ook nog ’n boek van Wim wat ek wil laat publiseer. Ek wil my tuin geniet en ek wil in Welkom bly.”

CONCERNED RESIDENT, Welkom: IN these desperate times of drought and water shortages, I would like to know what the Matjhabeng Local Municipality is doing to save water. There is constant news about serious water restrictions in the Free State. Yet, wherever you go Z to Welkom, Thabong, Odendaalsrus, Allanridge, Virginia, Hennenman and Ventersburg Z there is water running down the streets due to damaged water pipes and leaking fire hydrants. We have had a leaking fire hydrant in our street for at least three years now. It regularly gets reported, but we were told that there were no spares for repairs. The sad thing is that it is not only a problem in Matjhabeng, but in all the ANC-municipalities. Perhaps, if these leakages are properly repaired, we would not have water restrictions. Or is this going to be dealt with in the same way as the load-shedding? The municipal manager pleaded with the public to save electricity. Yet, every night the majority of the municipal offices’ lights were burning, wasting electricity, the municipal manager’s included. Or the time when there was no money to pay Eskom and Sedibeng. Yet, the municipal manager took all his directors and their secretaries plus “selected” managers to Aldam for a long weekend, costing the municipality an absolute fortune. So please, Mr Municipal Manager, we the public, now plead with you: Stop wasting our money on unnecessary excursions, unnecessary legal fees, employing unnecessary people on exorbitant salaries, an excess of secretaries who are incompetent, office furniture and the list goes on. Rather concentrate on the needs of your people by fixing all these water pipes and hydrants, and save us from a waterless Christmas.
Deterioration is a disgrace IRENE SMITH, Welkom: I AM a concerned citizen and I hereby would like to air a few concerns about the inability of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, hoping it will be heard. The mayor of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality repeatedly reported how Welkom will improve and be maintained. All this to no avail. To my disappointment, there is a serious and ongoing deterioration of our city. I have been trying for almost 12 years to have an open field near my house (turned into a rubbish dumping site lately) cleaned. The dumping site is an extremely big problem and is worsening daily. Do not just clean the main routes in Welkom, Mr Mayor. Please come and have a look at the suburbs. It is a disgrace! Needless to say, the way you are approaching the cleaning of main routes in Welkom is a joke. Please try to use insecticide (spray the environment) as it will keep the weeds away or under control. The right tool for the right job!

Wie dink julle gaan die gemors verwyder? Sekerlik nie ons munisipalteit nie. Hoekom gooi julle dit nie agter in jul erf nie as julle so wil lewe nie. Dokumente met adresse is tussen die gemors gevind. Hierdie gaan vir seker by die owerhede aangemeld word.

A TEACHER from the Pheello Secondary School in Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus, died tragically last week. Namane Joseph Molebatsi (57), burnt to death near Bloudrif, 15 km outside Welkom, on the Theunissen road when his car caught fire. He was travelling towards Welkom. Teacher dies in fire behind Molebatsi, told police he saw how the car slowly left the road and came to a standstill in an open veld next to the road. The next moment Molebatsi’s vehicle, a

The Welkom Fire Brigade had to extinguish the car as well as the veld fire. The police are not sure what led to Molebatsi loosing control over the car.

Boewe vasgetrek “GOD se hand was oor ons.” Só sê Alta Pretorius van Swalukrans nadat die bekende plaas verlede week die teiken van ’n groot bende zama-zamas was. Die Swalukrans-kruieplaas was op Woensdag 25 November vir ’n derde keer in ’n kort tyd die teiken van gewapende rowers. Dansky goeie samewerking tussen die polisie en die gemeenskap is 12 mans op die plaas in hegtenis geneem. Die vorige kere kon die bende ook nie daarin slaag om iets te buit nie. ’n Huishulp is Woensdag met ’n vuurwapen en panga aangehou en aangerand. Die vrou was besig om wasgoed op te hang toe sy deur twee mans met klapmusse oorval is. Die een man was met ’n panga gewapen en die ander met ’n vuurwapen. Die twee mans het die vrou in die plaashuis gedwing en geëis dat sy die kluis vir hulle oopsluit. Hulle het haar van vertrek na vertrek geneem, maar kon geen kluis vind nie. Die mans het moed opgegee en uit die huis padgegee. Nog drie mans het buite die huis vir hulle gewag. Pretorius het aan Vista gesê ’n werker wat aan ’n pyp gewerk het, het haar kom roep. Dié werker het die huishulp se gille gehoor. Sy het onmiddellik besef dat hulle beroof word. Dit was die derde keer dat die plaas in die afgelope tyd geteiken word. Die vorige keer was net twee weke gelede. Die rowers het toe die huis se deur probeer afbreek, maar kon dit nie regkry nie. Pretorius het van die kruiewinkel na die huis, wat ’n entjie weg is, gery en ook onmiddellik die

Nog agt ander mans is ook in die omgewing gevang. ) Dié rooftog kom minder as ’n week nadat die Barnard-egpaar van Odendaalsrus op hul plaas Palmietkuil aangeval is. Oom Jan Barnard (73) is doodgeskiet en sy vrou, Corrie (72), is gewond. Oom Jan se begrafnis is vandag om 11:00 in die NG kerk Moedergemeente in Odendaalsrus.

Van dié inhegtenisnemings was 93 dwelmverwant, terwyl twee dwelmlaboratoriums gesluit is. Die toewyding waarmee die 43-jarige ao. Evard (Wassie) Wasmuth en Ivan hul taak verrig, het nie perke nie, want 36 van dié suksesvolle inhegtenisnemings is in hul vrye tyd gedoen. Geen wonder nie dat Wasmuth in die individuele afdeling vir sigbare werknemer van die jaar (vlak 5 tot vlak 7) op die geleentheid in die Philip Saunders-oord buite Bloemfontein met die louere weggestap het. Dit is ook nie die eerste keer dat Wasmuth van Welkom se K9-eenheid vereer word nie. Hy het in 2013-’14 dieselfde prys in dieselfde afdeling verwerf. In 2014-’15 het hy die kategorie op nasionale vlak gewen. Vrydagaand se geleentheid was die derde keer agtereenvolgens dat hy vereer is. Wasmuth en Ivan het al baie koperkabeldiewe se ondergang beteken. Ivan is teen R28 000 spesiaal vir Wasmuth van Nederland na Suid-Afrika gebring. Hy het sy eie paspoort. Die egpaar se drie kinders is trots op hul pa en sy hond. Wasmuth sê sy tydverdryf is sy werk en wanneer hy nie werk nie, gaan hy na die gimnasium of kuier tuis saam met sy gesin. Hy sê sy werk is gevaarlik en daarom is hy altyd versigtig. Hy het al twee doodsdreigemente ontvang. Hy het in 1986 in Welkom gematrikuleer en hom in 1990 by die polisie aangesluit. “Ek werk al 16 jaar in die polisie se honde-eenheid. Bevordering pla my nie. Wanneer ek eendag oud is, sal ek as lid van die sigbare polisiëringseenheid van die polisie steeds iemand in my drag oor die straat wil help. Ek is baie trots daarop om ’n polisieman te wees.”

Saarkie stel nuwe lied, video bekend SAARKIE is ’n Suid-Afrikaanse all-girl rock band wat vir elke aspek van hul musiek en die uitvoering daarvan verantwoordelik is. Met hul eiesoortige styl bied hulle vertonings aan wat Afrikaans én Engels insluit. Adèle Fouché is die hoofsanger en sy speel ook kitaar en mondfluitjie. Lila Botha speel tromme en is ook ’n agtergrondstem. Lourene Mostert speel die baskitaar, klawerboard en is ’n agtergrondstem. Fouché en Botha is van Boksburg afkomstig en sedert kleuterskool al vriendinne. Hulle is saam na die Laerskool Baanbreker en van daar saam na Dr. E.G. Jansen. Lourene het eers op Messina gewoon, maar is nou in Centurion gevestig. Die groep het in Oktober 2014 sy eerste enkelsnit, “Dullstroom” van sy nuwe en derde album, “Reisiger”, bekend gestel en het pas die musiekvideo uitgereik. Die album is vroeg in 2015 uitgereik en is deur
Sean Manley en Zanda Greeff vervaardig. Die album bestaan uit 12 liedjies en sluit in “Afrikaland”, “Freefalling”, “Vroue van Afrika”, “Reisiger”, “Chuck Norris”, “Trust”, “One Love”, “Dullstroom”, “My jeug”, “Kamers van my hart”, “Ai my lam”, en “Nader aan my”. Die groep se tweede enkelsnit, “Somerjare”, en die musiekvideo hiervoor is in Februarie vanjaar uitgereik. Saarkie het in 2009 sy debuutalbum, “Luister”, vrygestel. Die album is uit 12 oorspronklike liedjies, waarvan drie in Engels is, saamgestel. Die album het ’n goeie indruk op die Suid-Afrikaanse mark gemaak en het Saarkie in die hart van gehore landswyd gevestig. Saarkie se musikale groei sedert die vrystelling van sy eerste album is merkwaardig en te danke aan die lede van die groep wat nou gegradueerde musikante is en dus hul instrumente beter kon bemeester en sodoende die gehalte van hul musiek kon verbeter.

Dit het die eerbewys vir Beste Fliek op die 2015 Indie Karoo-fliekfees gewen. Die Vrystaat Kunstefees se bestaande boekeprogram word vir volgende jaar se fees aansienlik uitgebrei – daarom is die organiseerders op soek na toneelstukke en woordkunsproduksies wat op ’n belangrike Suid-Afrikaanse boek gegrond is, of oor ’n boeiende
Suid-Afrikaanse skrywer handel. Amari wins with best tree THE Goldfields Mall hosted the Charity Christmas Tree Project where six non-profit organisations were given the opportunity to decorate a Christmas tree in the mall over the festive season. The organisations selected could theme their tree to promote the unique services they offered. The trees were decorated by the Restoring Hope Village, the Virginia SPCA, Huis Maanblom, Claws, the Amari School and Welkom SPCA. The winner was based on 50% community voting and a 50% judges’ vote. Tanya Nomazele, general manager of the Goldfields Mall said: “A very big thank you to all six organisations for doing an outstanding job of decorating the trees so beautifully and creating a festive atmosphere throughout the mall. The end-result was superb, which made the voting process a very tough one. “Close to 18 000 entries were received in-centre and on Facebook. The Welkom Regional Court sentenced the accused on 20 November after finding him guilty of raping the victim, then 34 years old. The accused had been out on parole at the time of raping the victim. He served less than four years of his eight-year prison sentence. In 2010 Sandawane was sentenced to eight years for rape. Following a successful prosecution, the Welkom Regional Court sentenced Sandawane to life for raping the 34year-old woman who resides in Allanridge. The accused met the victim on her way to a local police station to lay a charge of knife-stabbing against her boyfriend. The victim testified that the accused volunteered to accompany her to the police station as it was during the night. While walking to the station, the suspect started pushing her in the direction of a nearby toilet next to the taxi rank. The man allegedly broke a bottle and threatened to stab the victim if she resisted instructions. The suspect proceeded to rape the woman and also ordered her to perform sexual acts on him. The victim alerted the members of the community who apprehended the accused. The court found him guilty of raping the woman.

Kersvader span ysterperde in DIE Pelatonastadion in Welkom wemel van motorfietse en kinders tydens die jaarlikse Toy Run. Molly Green DIE harte van meer as 400 kinders is met die jaarlikse Toy Run wat in Welkom gehou is aangeraak. Lede van 24 motorfietsklubs van die NoordVrystaat het aan dié projek deelgeneem. Die konvooi van meer as 400 motorfietse is deur Kersvader (Daan Lemmer), gelei. Elke kind het ’n geskenkie, ’n lekkergoedpakkie en ’n worsrol ontvang. Daar was ook twee springkastele en ’n mallemeuele waarop die kleingoed baljaar het.
Die kinders het ook speletjies op die rugbyveld van die Pelatona-stadion gespeel en Oom Karolus en Lente het hulle vermaak. Die lede van die motorfietsklubs was van so ver as Hennenman, Wesselsbron, Bothaville, Welkom, Virginia en Odendaalsrus. Die kinders het van die hele Lejweleputswa-distrik gekom. Barney Venter, bestuurder van ’n plaaslike sekuriteitsmaatskappy, sê die Toy Run was die ideale geleentheid vir sakelui om iets aan die gemeenskap terug te gee.

Stars in race Teboho Setena THE three football clubs from the Goldfields - Sibanye Golden Stars, Harmony and Dinonyana - are approaching the halfway mark in the ABC Motsepe League, at different positions. Stars are exactly where they hoped to be Z in the championship race. They are among the top five teams chasing the Free State (FS) stream league championship. Stars started the season well and are still keeping up with the pace in the challenge for this year’s championship contest. Stars find themselves currently in position four on the FS stream’s log. They are trailing current log leaders, Monaco Milan, by three points after ten matches played. The Goldfields team’s current position has them amongst the favourites to clinch this year’s FS second division title. Stars have shown great improvement and they even qualified for the lucrative Nedbank Cup’s last-32 leg. Stars’s home counterparts, Harmony and Dinonyana, have faltered in the race for the championship. The two sides are in the bottom half of the FS second tier division run by the South African Football Association (Safa). Harmony and Dinonyana are currently in position 12 and 13, respectively. Their further loss of significant ground could lead to relegation in the second segment of the league. They have managed to record two wins each in nine matches played, which means they have to double their efforts to avoid possible relegation.
Senatla eyes gold LOCAL and South Africa’s Rugby Sevens golden boy, Seabelo Senatla, aims to continue impressing at the Dubai Rugby Sevens tournament with a view to realising his dream of participating in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This year’s Dubai Rugby Sevens tournament kicks off today (3/12) and ends on Saturday (5/12). The event has become a happy hunting ground for Senatla, who has earned yet another place in the strong Springbok Sevens 12-man squad. While he is focusing on doing well at the Dubai tournament, the event will spur him on to qualify for the Rio Olympics, his dream being to win gold at the games. Senatla proved his worth in the Rugby Sevens last year. He was instrumental in the Blitzboks’ winning in last season’s Dubai Sevens championship. His stun-
