Ghoulish nightmare THE Welkom graveyard is a ghoulish nightmare with holy si tes being desecrated on a daily basis. A week ago, the Jewish synagogue was broken into and virtually destroyed. Music icon passes away Marti Will A GOLDFIELDS music icon, Richard Edward Penny (66), or Penny as he was known to his family and friends, has passed away in Pietermaritzburg. Penny died on 1 August in a hospital. His fiancé, Annetjie Möcke of Odendaalsrus, where Penny lived until shortly before his death, says he first came to Odendaalsrus in 1974. “He lived here for about two years before he returned to his birth city, East London. He came back to Odendaalsrus in 1987 and started making music at the various hotels in the Goldfields,” says Annatjie. Penny was a regular sight at old haunts like the President Hotel, the Commercial Hotel and the Hotel 147. “At the Hotel 147, Ray Dylan, then still in the beginning of his musical career, popped in now and then and said: ‘Uncle Penny. can I do a number, please?’ Penny would then reply ‘sure’ and played the

musician walked into wherever he played, he asked them to come and do a number or couple of numbers and always applauded them,” says Annatjie. Penny’s first guitar was an oil-tin with can-fruit elastics which he played on. Annatjie

says Penny got his first real guitar at the age of eight and he was immediately hooked. “His idols were his one aunt and uncle who were also musicians. Penny brought so many people together with his music. He used to play dance music and entertained so many people,” she says. Penny was 75% deaf and had to tune his guitar by holding it against his ear. This fascinated everybody. He designed a base pedal all on his own. He played two keyboards through the base pedals, while at the same time singing and playing the guitar. In the last couple of years of his life, he no longer played publicly, but entertained the people in the complex where he stayed in Odendaalsrus. Penny leaves behind his fiancé, Annetjie, his sons, Franky, Richie and Shern, his ex-wife, Corrie, and her husband, Percy, all from Odendaalsrus, as well as his two daughters, Isobel and Elizabeth, who live in Durban.

PENNY had designed a base pedal all on his own. He played two keyboards through the base pedals while at the sa me time singing and playing the guitar.

ANTOINETTE SCHOEMAN, Riebeeckstad: WAT ’n skreiende skande en beslis ’n geweldige skok. Volgens die media gaan die Bonganihospitaal in Welkom slegs uiters kritieke pasiënte behandel. My huishulp is weggewys nadat sy ure lank in ’n ry gesit het om ’n dokter te spreek. Daar was géén dokter om die pasiënte te spreek nie. Omdat sy al jare lank vir my werk, het ek haar na ’n private dokter geneem. Dit het my baie geld gekos, maar sy kon darem medikasie kry en is nie weggewys nie. Ek praat uit ondervinding. Die Bongani-hospitaal is vuil en boonop is die personeel nie behulpsaam nie. Ek het gesien hoe ’n baie siek bejaarde in ’n kruiwa deur sy kleinkind na die Bongani-hospitaal gestoot word. Ek het gelukkig dieselfde pad gery as wat hulle geloop het en kon hulle in my motor oplaai. Die kleindogter van die siek omie het gesê hulle kon nie ’n ambulans kry nie, want die ambulanse is óf stukkend óf op die pad. Ek het met die siek bejaarde na ongevalle gehaas, maar is weggewys. Daar was nog geen dokter nie en hy moes in ’n lang ry gaan sit. Die omie is intussen oorlede. My grootste bekommernis is wat as ’n ramp die Goudveld tref? Een van die grootste hospitale in die suidelike halfrond moes sy deure sluit. Wat gaan die regering aan hierdie ernstige tekort doen? Wie is ons minister van gesondheid en veiligheid? Kan Ace Maghashule, premier van die Vrystaat, nie indringend iets aan hierdie uiters kritieke situasie doen nie? Ek glo en vertrou dat die regering ’n dringende plan gaan bedink en aandag hieraan sal skenk.

Afdeling se diens pla ROELIEN VAN DER WALT, Hennenman: EK wil graag die swak diens en onvriendelikheid van die personeel by Hennenman se verkeersafdeling onder die aandag van die owerhede bring. Water lek nog ONTEVREDE, Odendaalsrus: AS inwoner voel dit vir my dat daar niks aan die waterlekkasies van Odendaalsrus gedoen word nie. In Odendaalstraat, wat die ingang van ons dorp is, lyk dit verskriklik. Die lekkasie het een groot moddermoeras veroorsaak. Die waterlekkasie is deur verskeie persone aangemeld en steeds word daar niks aan die probleem gedoen nie. Ek het ’n telefoonnommer van die betrokke raadslid gekry en hom geskakel. Sy woorde aan my was: “Ek is te blerrie besig met baie ander dinge en ek het nie tyd vir waterlekke nie.” Nou wonder ek maar net, as hy nie sy salaris ontvang nie, sal hy dan steeds te besig wees vir waterlekkasies? Die betrokke raadslid ry gereeld verby die waterlekkasie met sy munisipaliteitsbakkie. Ek wonder wat sal gebeur as hy met sy bakkie daar vasval. Dalk dan sal die waterlekkasie herstel word.

Police looking for relatives of deceased man THE police are searching for the relatives of an African man found floating in the Witpan dam in the industrial area of Welkom. On 6 August at 09:30, a man contacted the

police after discovering the body of an unknown African man in the dam. The police found the decomposed body floating in Witpan and the clothes the deceased wore were not visible.

The investigation revealed that the man had been hit on his head with a blunt object before he was thrown into Witpan. The corpse is still at the Welkom Government Mortuary.

No arrest has been made and the police ask anyone with information to help trace the suspects and the deceased’s relatives to contact Det.Sgt Teswin Carls at 057-391-6238 or 072-294-9306.

Kidney offer brings hope Madli Grobbelaar

JORDAN BARBER (22) is a third year student in Agriculture at the University of the Free State. His lifestyle has changed drastically since he was diagnosed with serious renal failure two years ago. However, three weeks ago, Jordan received the best possible news. A family friend volunteered to donate a kidney and, after undergoing the tests, he proved to be a match. Although this is the beginning of a very long process, Jordan and his family are hopeful that it will culminate in a kidney transplant. This will allow Jordan to lead a more

normal life. Jordan receives dialysis three to four times a week. Each session lasts five hours. Although this lifestyle is very disruptive for a student, he gets up at 04:00 for dialysis, which allows him to attend most of his lectures. He has frequently been hospitalised due to complications arising from his condition, which has had a negative impact on his studies. Jordan, who is a former learner of the St Dominic’s College in Welkom, said a kidney transplant is the only option that will give him a normal life again. At this stage, Jordan and his family would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support and for keeping Jordan in

their prayers. “This act of selflessness of a friend, offering to donate a kidney, speaks volumes for the power of prayer,” said Garth, Jordan’s father. The family is confident that this will result in a life-saving transplant for him. Jordan started a Facebook page, Jordan’s Organ Pursuit, to create awareness and to inform people about organ donation. It was a way to encourage people to learn about organ donation and to show them that they can save as many as seven lives if they become donors. The Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) needs the assistance of the community to find the 5- year-old Bokomiso Kgotso Prince Mahlangu. Bokomiso Mahlangu, who was two years old at the time of his disappearance, has been missing since 16 August 2013. He was kidnapped by a woman, Joyce Dineo Mohapi, also known as Lovemore of Thabong. The suspect was arrested in May in Clarens and is currently awaiting trial in Welkom.

Drug dealers busted OPERATION EXPOSE, led by the Hawks, the Tactical Response Team, the K9 Unit and the Thabong police, have led to the arrest of three suspects for alleged drug dealing. The three suspects from Thabong, Welkom, aged 23, 26 and 33, were in the possession of dagga and Mandrax. Information was followed up on Thursday (11/08) about certain houses in Thabong from which drugs had allegedly been sold. The task team found a man and his girlfriend with 67 man-

drax tablets to the value of R4 020 and R465. The mandrax tablets were hidden at the back of a pit toilet. The two were arrested for drug dealing. The third suspect was also arrested at his residence and was found to be in possession of 16 Mandrax tablets and dagga. The drugs and cash were seized. The suspects appeared before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday (15/08), facing charges of drug dealing.

Donderdag (11/08) omstreeks 17:00 het Wimpie Hamman, wat ’n besigheid oorkant die stadsaal bestuur, rook gewaar. Hy het ondersoek ingestel en bepaal dat die verhoog aan die brand geslaan het. Die Masilonyane-munisipaliteit van Winburg beskik nie oor brandweergeriewe nie en die Welkom- en Virginia-brandweer is gekontak om hulp te verleen. Die Winburgse Brandbeskermingsvereniging, boere van die omgewing en padbouwerkers moes inspring om die brand te blus. Die padbouers wat tans aan die

N1 werk, het water voorsien om die brand mee te blus. By die stadsaal is daar wel ’n brandkraan, maar daar is nie ’n sleutel vir die kraan nie. Daar was ook nie brandslange beskikbaar nie en die dorp was sonder water weens ’n waterpyp wat vroeër die dag gebars het. Die gemeenskap is dankbaar vir die flink optrede van die Brandbeskermingsvereniging en padbouwerkers wat hulle te hulp gesnel het. Die plaaslike munisipaliteit doen geen instandhoudingswerk nie en daar is kommer oor die toestand van die gebou. Die brand word tans deur die polisie ondersoek. Vermoedelik is die brand deur kabeldiefstal of ’n elektriese fout veroorsaak.

THE 27th annual Flamingo Rotary and Goldfields Hospice Golf Day was held on Tuesday, 9 August, at the Oppenheimer Park Golf Club. Funds were raised for the Goldfields Hospice to be able to continue its free service in the Goldfields area. “We strive to improve quality in life, dignity in death and support in bereavement to all those suffering from a terminal illness and it is only through the generosity and unselfishness of people in our communi ty that we are able to continue to provide a valuable service to the patients within our own communities,” says Marli Yo ung, general manager of the hospice. “There was a great turnout and our thanks go to all the players and sponsors who support this day annually and espe cially to many new sponsors this year.” The competition format was an individu al Stableford. Big craze takes hold

IN July, the world’s biggest little craze came to South Africa. Checkers introduced its Little Shop Mini Collectables across the country. The retailer shrunk 29 of South Africa’s most recog nisable brands into an exciting, fun and educational promotion that everyone could take part in. Checkers Little Shop aimed at inspiring South Africa’s young entrepreneurs through its Little Shop All Stars competition. The first 25 learners to complete their Checkers Little Shop collections stood a chance of winning R10 000 for themselves and R10 000 for their schools. Two schools in Virginia each won R10 000 as part of the competition. The representatives of Virginia Volkskool and Checkers are, from the left, Jacques Gouvea (branch manager: Chec kers), Stoffel du Plessis (regional manager: Checkers), James Meyer (principal), Mienie Klein geld (PR: Checkers), Kayleigh Loubser (learner) and Marlene Breytenbach. AS part of Women’s Day celebrations, the Goldfields Sunset Rotary Club, in partnership with the Thabong Police Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) and the Community Policing Forum (CPF), visited informal settlements and campaigned against the abuse of women and children. They also identified homes in desperate need and handed out food parcels. “This is the biggest project of its kind in our region and this year was the 12th consecutive year that hundreds of destitute families received assistance. “There is so much poverty in our community. We cannot help or reach everyone, but we do what we can and every bit helps. “Five tons of maize meal plus samp, rice, soya mince, soup, sardines, baked beans, mixed vegetables, tea, toothpaste and toothbrushes made up the parcels that were handed out,” said Dulcie Harris of the Goldfields Sunset Rotary Club and convenor

of this massive project. Specific areas were identified and door-todoor campaigning was done. Before the door-to-door visits, the ensemble of vehicles gathered in an open area, where the sound unit was set up and a police officer addressed the crowd, explaining what was happening. The officer openly talked about domestic violence. Die oorspronklike gedagte was dat die gemeenskap ’n plakker moet koop en só ’n broodjie aan behoeftiges borg. “Vanjaar het ons egter net skenkings vir die projek gevra en geen plakkers verkoop nie,” sê Janése van den Berg van die VVA. Dirkie Kotze, die hoof van Hoopstad se sosiale reïntegrasie-eenheid en sy eenheidsbestuurder, Shadrack Khunou, het besluit om deel hiervan te wees. Kotze het Sasko vir brood gevra en só is 40 brode aan die projek geskenk. Daar is vanjaar beoog om 6 000 toebroodjies aan die behoeftiges van Wesselsbron en Monyakeng uit te deel. Altesaam 740 brode is ingesamel en getalle van behoeftiges by skole en sentrums vir bejaardes is gekry om vir elkeen ’n ham-en-kaasroosterbroodjie te maak. You can help strengthen helping hand THE Grace Care Centre is a nonprofit organisation that cares for more than 110 families who are unable to provide for themselves. Situated on the corner of Ararat and Tempest Road in Welkom, on the premises of the Kingdom Ministries Church, the centre’s vision is to restore and empower individuals and families. Marelize van der Merwe, coordinator, says they do this by handing out food parcels, providing skillstraining opportunities and creating a platform to assist with work placement. “We are also involved with various other community projects to uplift communities stricken by poverty and addiction,” says Van der Merwe. She says their funding comes from donations and the sale of secondhand clothing donated by individuals. People can donate clothes, food or money. ALL those who love to walk or to run must make sure to be in Welkom on Friday (19/08). The annual night road race and walk challenge of the Eskom Free State Athletics Club takes place on Friday. This year there will be different road races, times and prizes. Athletes can walk or run the following distances: 10 km for men and women, 5 km for women only, 1,5 km and 100 m for children and toddlers and a 1,5 km race for disabled persons in wheelchairs. In the wheelchair race, two of last year’s participants in this race will walk the last 200 m. Rand Mutual has entered a large number of wheelchair participants, who will be accompanied by the nursing staff and management of the hospital. There will be 16 water points on the route. All athletes who enter for the 5 km and the 10 km race will receive a newly designed and printed Mediclinic and valos string bag. Athletes who still did not enter can still do so on Friday at Virgin Active in Meulen Street, Welkom, until 30 minutes before the race. The race numbers, wrist bands and entry tickets can be collected at Virgin Active when entering. Support the race and the following beneficiaries, awareness campaigns and competitions: ) Charlotte Moll Haven: A residential care centre for mentally and physically handicapped adults. R10 of your entry fee in the 5 km women’s race will be donated to the Haven’s residents. ) Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa): Colour your hair for R5 in front of the main gate of Mediclinic from 09:00 to 19:00. The entry fees of the children and the toddlers will be donated to Cansa. ) South African National Blood Service (SANBS): Lucky prize draws. Holds golf day THE ROTARY CLUB OF GOLDFIELDS SUN SET recently held their annual Golf Day, which was a great success. Mampoi holds reunion

THE Mampoi High School pupils in Qwaqwa (next to the Charles Mopeli Stadium) are planning a reunion of old pupils between 30 September and 3 October. This is according to Moeti Molelekoa, Welkom-based veteran free-lance journalist and a graduate of this high school. “Hundreds of students and their spouses, ex-teachers and their partners from across the country are expected. “A great number of former learners and ex-teachers have since joined the WhatsApp chat group, appropriately named Dihwai. The name Dihwai is adopted from the school’s motto ‘Dihwai Ipokelle’, loosely translated it means: ‘Make hay while the sun shines.’ The school was named after Mampoi, the wife of the late Dr Tsiame Ken Mopeli, former prime minister of the defunct homeland. “Guests will be accommodated at various guesthouses and hotels, as well as at Mampoi High School hostels. Some former learners would like to go and have a feel of their former boarding houses, free of charge. They will arrive on Friday, 30 September, and depart to their various accommodations after supper. “The programme starts the following day at 10:00. Donations of R300 from class members are requested. “The aim is to donate a sum of money to the school as a plough back. Through the social media platform, members have been able to communicate with one another and have formed one big family. Other issues, like programmes, new recruits, a gala dinner, suggestions and catering, are being discussed in social media,” says Molelekoa. Molelekoa said: “Young learners came from all over the country for a prized place in this school. It has since produced well-equipped leaders across all sectors of society, from business and industry to education, medicine, law and media. The Welkom Hungry Lions, former National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) campaigners, recruited talent from this school for their team in the 70’s.” Guests will depart on Sunday, 3 October,” concluded Molelekoa. Perstruie begin sterk Molly Green DIE Down Touch Griffons se sewe drieë teenoor die vier van die Pumas was ’n uitstekende begin van die Perstruie se eerste wedstryd in die eerste liga van die Curriebekerseisoen. Die rustydtelling was verlede Vrydag 22 elk. Die Pumas het aanvanklik voor geloop. Die Griffons het egter kort voor rustyd twee drieë gedruk, wat die telling gelykop gemaak het. Noord-Vrystaters momentum gekry en ’n welverdiende oorwinning van 50-27 oor die manne van Kemptonpark behaal. Vir die Griffons het die senter Vuyo Mboto drie drieë gedruk en Selwyn Davids, Martin Sitole, Elandré Hugget en Kwezi Mkhafu elkeen een. George Whitehead het met 6 doelskoppe en ’n strafdoel geslaag. Die Griffons kom dié naweek teen die Suid-Westelike Distrikte se Arende op George te staan.

DIE eerste rugbyspan van WelkomGimnasium is as die wenner van die Griffon-skoleliga in Welkom gekroon. Dié span het kookwaterrugby gespeel en ’n welverdiende oorwinning van 35-8 oor ’n begeesterde span van die Hoërskool Voortrekker van Bethlehem behaal. Die rustydtelling was 14-8 in die Gimmies se guns. Dit was ’n taai wedstryd, maar die Gimmies het hulle uitmuntend van hul taak in die HT Pelatonastadion gekwyt. Die Gimmies gaan nou in die Shimla-liga teen die Hoërskool Noord-Kaap in Kimberley te staan kom. Die span van Welkom-Gimnasium moes Saterdag (13/08) in Welkom sonder sy skrumskakel Richman
