Twanette de la Hunt het in die kombuis gelê met ’n koeëlwond in haar oog. ’n Ambulans is ontbied, maar sy het op pad na die hospitaal gesterf. ’n Koeëldoppie van ’n polisiedienspistool is op die toneel gevind en Jan de la Hunt is by die huis in hegtenis geneem en van moord aangekla. Meer as 100 inwoners het Maandag (02/05) buite die De la Hunt-huis in Van Andelstraat byeengekom om kerse ter herinnering aan haar te brand en in gebed te verenig. De la Hunt se twee groot honde is steeds by die huis en word deur familie versorg. Die diere was volgens vriende en familie soos twee kinders vir die kinderlose Twanette. Twanette se ma, Ronel Oosterdorp, en twee susters, Heidie en Cindy, asook talle

De la Hunt is steeds in aanhouding en sal weer op Dinsdag 10 Mei in die hof verskyn vir sy aansoek om borgtog. Hy het voor landdros Ian de Villiers verskyn, maar landdros de Villiers sal hom aan die verhoor onttrek omdat hy Jan ken. Volgens ao. OWNERS of asbestos houses in Welkom are fighting a losing battle against banks that refuse to approve bonds to potential buyers. The only alternative is to find cash buyers, but then the new owners would also not be able to sell the house at a later stage to a potential buyer who needs a bond. Pieter Jacobs from Van Wyk Louw Street in Jan Celliers Park, Welkom, wrote the following letter to Standard Bank, Absa and Nedbank. So far he has only received an answer from Standard Bank: “About 10 years ago I bought my house from my employer, Harmony Gold Mines in Welkom, with a home loan from Absa. It has since been repaid fully using part of my pension money. So did many other employees. Harmony and the banks were very keen to promote home ownership and therefore assisted enthusiastically. “My house, and many other houses, were pre-fabricated asbestos houses. “I remember that the banks were competing to grant home loans and the type of house was never an issue or was not even mentioned. It was good business for the banks. I retired three years ago. It was always in our planning to move closer to our children when both my wife and I retired. To my shock, dismay and unpleasant surprise, I
had to find out that banks no longer give loans for these pre-fabricated structures. No sane reason was given, apart from the feeble excuse that ‘these structures could be removed overnight’. “When the banks could make money out of us over many years, there were no objections to the granting of loans, but now that their services are again required to sell the same house, help is no longer forthcoming. “Do you realise in what predicament you are placing many of us and many other future home owners? I would like to know how you can reasonably explain your changed attitude. “How can things just change in such a short period of time? Do you know the shattering impact of a property you will never be able to sell? Do you no longer have a social conscience?” (Letter shortened.) ) Standard Bank’s reply: “Please be advised that we have consulted our assessors department regarding your query, they advise that we no longer finance asbestos houses due to the health risks it poses. “This information has been passed down from government whereby they have restricted us from financing such properties and as a result our business rules had to be changed in-line with health and safety regulations.”

Blanket record in sight THE Flamingo Rotary’s attempt at breaking the South African record for the largest knitted or crocheted blanket will be determined at the flea market on 14 May. The current record stands at 1 020,13 m² and is held by a church in Polokwane. The Matjhabeng project was started in April 2015 and will continue until the blankets are laid out at the flea market on 14 May, when the size of the blanket will be
measured. An aerial photograph will be taken of the record attempt. There is a drop-off zone for completed blankets or donations of wool in the foyer of the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre. People who want to specify to which Goldfields organisation a donated blanket must be given, must add a securely-attached written request to the blanket. All blankets will go to charity.

WE as Lejweleputswa Up-Rising marched peacefully to the Matjhabeng Local Municipality to hand over our memorandum of demands to Youth Development and the CWP for permanent work. The march was successful, because we were in co-operation with the SAPS (according to Section 4 sub(1) and Section 4 sub(2) paragraph B). The municipality took this protest very lightly. We also managed to meet with the deputy speaker of the legislature, the MMC (Mayoral Committee) of the mayoral office’s special programmes from Matjhabeng, Youth Development Officers from both the Majthabeng Local Municipality and the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, yet only Legislature has responded. Later on, we met with the municipal manager of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality. Nothing has come of this meeting.

Elke park ’n skatkis DIE bekendstelling van ’n splinternuwe staproete wat tans in die Golden GateHoogland- Nasionale Park gebou word, het pas weer die kollig laat val op hierdie pragtige en unieke park, die Vrystaat se enigste nasionale park, waar die grasveldbioom vir die nageslag bewaar word. Dié park van 34 000 ha is om verskeie redes van besonderse belang. Enersyds is dit die enigste nasionale park in die land waar die bedreigde grasveld-bioom bewaar word. Andersyds speel die park ’n belangrike rol as vleilandgebied wat help om water te suiwer. Verder het die park ’n unieke geologiese waarde weens die pragtige voorbeelde van verskillende rotsformasies uit die Karoo-opeenvolging wat hier bestudeer kan word. Wat paleontologie betref, is Golden Gate natuurlik die tuiste van fossiele van die heel oudste bekende dinosourus-embrios wat hier gevind is. Die gebied is jare gelede deur onder meer die massospondilus-dinosourus bewoon, en die plan is steeds om ’n unieke dinosourusinligtingsentrum in die park op te rig. Die park se pragtige plantegroei bestaan hoofsaaklik uit grasveld, struike en woudagtige gebiede. Die ouhout teen die hange van die heuwels en in klowe is die bekendste struik in die park. Nie almal is bewus daarvan nie, maar Golden Gate beskik ook oor geïsoleerde stroke waar proteas groei. Wat dierelewe betref, is dié omgewing bekend daarvoor dat dit veral in die vroeë 19de eeu gewemel het van die wild. Vandag nog kry ’n mens elande, rooihartebeeste, sebras, swartwildebeeste, blesbokke, springbokke, ribbokke en die bedreigde oribi in die park. Golden Gate speel voorts ’n belangrike rol in die bewaring van bedreigde aasvoëlsoorte soos die kransaasvoël en die baardaasvoël. Dié is maar net enkele van die dosyne voëlspesies wat hier voorkom en wat die

Kom ons doen meer moeite om daar uit te kom. Dié park is, soos die ander nasionale parke in die land, van toeriste afhanklik om die nodige inkomste wat vir bewaring en ontwikkeling nodig is, te genereer. Hierdie is ’n skat in ons midde wat verdien om ondersteun en bewaar te word. ) Die nuwe staproete, wat waarskynlik oor twee dae sal strek, sal in ’n agt-vorm wees sodat stappers vir twee aande op dieselfde plek slaap. Bouwerk aan die roete, met sowat 20 brûe en 20 lere om moeilik begaanbare dele te bereik, sal nog sowat twee maande duur.
VANDAT die jongste lid van die gesin besluit het om ’n gesonder lewenstyl te handhaaf, berei sy haar eie ontbyt. Ek sien nog nie kans vir die semels, dun jogurt en afgewaterde teetjies nie, en hou maar van ’n stewige etery in die oggend. Almal wonder seker wat my punt nou eintlik is. Die ding waarby ek wil uitkom, is gebed; die telefoonlyn na Bo. Dit is die jongste se beurt om te bid, en sy vra dat die Here die hande sal seën wat die kos berei het. Ek vra so tong in die kies, om haar te terg: “Nou bid jy sommer vir jou eie hande?” “Nee, my liewe moedertjie,” kom die antwoord. “Ek bid vir hulle wat hierdie kos geplant het, wat dit versorg het, wat dit gepluk het, en wat gemaak het dat ek dit vanoggend kon eet”. Poef! Uitgeboul! Ek begin dink. Ons sê so maklik ’n gebed op, maar dink ons werklik oor die woorde wat ons bid? Of sê ons dit net oor en oor terwyl ons dink aan die hoop werk wat vandag gedoen moet word, die hondekos wat gedaan is en die kar wat gewas moet word? Praat ons regtig uit ons hart met die Here en bedoel ons wat ons bid? Ons dominee sal vandag seker baie trots wees op my oor hoe ek dink, maar eintlik kry ek skaam. Oorkant die straat van ons kantoor sit daar elke dag ’n jong man wat klou aan die sakkie met sy “geheue-uitwisser”. Ons kyk hoe hy op sy kniëe sit en die verbygangers irriteer. Ek self sê ek sal hom ’n oorveeg gee as hy aan my gaan pluk as ek verby hom sou loop.

Zama-zamas verlam polisiediens Alet van der Walt BINNEGEVEGTE, die skerp toename in onwettige mynwerkers, ’n tekort aan aanhoudingselle en ’n leierskaptwis tussen bevelvoerders verlam glo dié stad se polisiediens. ’n Ontevrede polisiebeampte het ’n brief oor die krisis by Welkom se polisiekantoor aan Volksblad, moederkoerant van Vista, gestuur. Kol. Billy Jones, die Vrystaatse hoof van die polisie se kommunikasieafdeling, het aan Volksblad gesê die enigste probleem waarvan die polisie bewus is, is die probleem met aanhoudingselle. Die selle het in Augustus verlede jaar afgebrand en die departement van openbare werke is tans besig om ’n geskikte kontrakteur aan te stel. Jones sê die ander bewerings word egter in ’n ernstige lig beskou en sal ondersoek word. Dit is ook nie aanvaarbaar dat polisielede die media oor interne probleme nader nie. Jones sê daar is interne kanale om probleme op te los. Volgens die brief plaas die zama-zamaprobleem ’n groeiende las op die plaaslike polisie. Talle polisielede moet daagliks onwettige mynwerkers in die Bongani-hospitaal bewaak. Hier word hulle deur sindikate geteiken en gedurig omkoopgeld aangebied. Die Welkom-polisiekantoor is die kantoor
ONWETTIGE mynwerkers wat die afgelope twee maande by die Elandskag weens metaangasbrande vlug, plaas groot druk op die plaaslike polisie se hulpbronne. Meer as 500 onwettige mynwerkers is sedert begin Maart in hegtenis geneem. Van hulle is siek en word in die Bonganihospitaal bewaak. Ander word op verskeie dorpe aangehou en moet dan na die Welkomlanddroshof aangery word. Die ander word by polisiekantore oor die Goudveld heen aangehou omdat Welkom se aanhoudingselle nog nie herstel is ná die brand nie. Die briefskrywer sê aangehoudenes moet uit ander dorpe na die landdroshof in Welkom aangery word en dit plaas ’n bykomende werklas op die polisie.
Soms word verhoorafwagtendes so ver as in Senekal, 120 km van Welkom, aangehou. Van die ander probleme wat geopper word, is die vervalle geriewe by die Welkom-polisiekantoor wat dienslewering aan die gemeenskap in die wiele ry, die magstryd tussen sekere bevelvoerders, ’n tekort aan polisielede en mans in die diens wat onaangename take op vroulike lede afskuif.

Sentrum vir wilde diere heropen Molly Green TWEE miershooptiertjies wat met behulp van ’n keisersnit in die wêreld gebring is nadat hul ma doodgeskiet is en ’n rooikatjie wie se ma doodgery is terwyl hy in haar bek was, is maar enkele van die diere wat by die Hart-rehabilitasiesentrum (Helping Animals Recover from Trauma) vir wilde en bedreigde spesies naby Ventersburg versorg word. Die miershooptiertjies, ook bekend as swartvoetwildekatjies, is nog in ’n “broeikas” en weeg reeds 200 g elk. Hulle word in afsondering gehou en nie aan die publiek blootgestel nie. Die Hart-rehabilitasiesentrum is onlangs van Kroonstad na ’n wildplaas tussen Virginia en Ventersburg oorgeskuif. Die sentrum is op Saterdag 23 April amptelik bekend gestel en heropen. In 2004 het Yvette Wolter die Hart-rehabilitasiesentrum op ’n plaas naby Kroonstad begin. Eleanor Pretorius van ’n wildsplaas naby Ventersburg het die rehabilitasie van beseerde siek diere, voëls, slange en wesies oorgeneem. Sy het reeds ’n wildkursus gedoen en liefde vir diere straal uit haar uit. “Ek probeer om nie té geheg aan die diertjies te raak nie. Hulle moet weer in die natuur vrygelaat word. “Gevolglik doen ek my bes om nie vir hulle name te gee nie.”
Twee wesies wat egter diep in haar hart gekruip het, is die twee miershooptiertjies wat nou twee maande oud is en elke twee uur voeding moet ontvang. Miershooptiere raak nooit mak nie. Dié wilde katte is ook baie aggressief en skuil in miershope. Nog ’n oulike inwoner van die sentrum is ’n blouapie. Sy ma is doodgeskiet en gelukkig het die aapwyfie wat in die hok is, hom aanvaar en gehelp met sy grootmaak. Die blouape word later na Tzaneen geneem, waar hulle in troppe vrygelaat word. Die rehabilitasiesentrum is van skenkings van die publiek afhanklik. Hondekos, vrugte en dooie kuikens is altyd welkom. Skenkings soos pale, teerpale en draad om hokke te bou, word ook verwelkom. Heelwat elektrisiteit word ook gebruik om slange in die winter warm te hou, asook beseerde baba-voëltjies. ’n Spesiale hok (40 m x 60 m) word nou vir die bekende Asiatiese swartbeer, Oscar, gebou, wat binnekort na die wildplaas oorgeplaas gaan word. Yvette sê mense wat op beseerde diere afkom, moet nie probeer om vir hulle kos te gee nie. Water is voldoende totdat hulle by die rehabilitasiesentrum kan uitkom. Die doel van die Padongelukkefonds is om te vergoed vir verlies of skade as gevolg van ligaamlike beserings weens die nalatige bestuur van 'n voertuig op Suid-Afrikaanse paaie.
Ná hoe lank moet ek 'n eis indien? Indien die identiteit van die oortrede bestuurder of eienaar van die voertuig bekend is, moet die eis binne drie jaar vavaf die datum van die ongeluk ingedien word. Dít is nie van toepassing by die eis van 'n minderjarige nie. Indien die identiteit van die persoon onbekend is, moet die eis binne twee jaar ingedien word.

CEO eager to help

PHUMZILE NHLAPO has been appointed as the new chief executive officer of the Lejweleputswa Development Agency (LDA). Nhlapo was born and raised in the Free State. She acknowledges that the position comes with a lot of responsibilities that needs a sober and openminded approach. Nhlapo has already set herself the objective of effectively and efficiently managing the task of implementing the strategy of the agency. Her vision is to make a positive impact on human nature by extending a helping hand. She started her career in the private sector and later joined the district municipality. In the few months Nhlapo has been in her new position, the district has already experienced a change. The LDA is an entity of the Lejweleputswa District Municipality.
PHUMZILE NHLAPO The primary objectives of the LDA are to promote and develop Lejweleputswa’s economic potential, to leverage public and private resources for development opportunities, to foster innovative thinking and entrepreneurial activity in the district and to manage the spatial organisation of the district.

Ek het in Julie 2006 by Welkom Nissan aangesluit, nadat ek verskeie jare by 'n mededinger gewerk het. Ek het geweet dit gaan aanvanklik vir my 'n uitdaging wees, maar met die hulp van ons takbestuurder, Frikkie Geyser en ons direkteur, Hugh Morgan het was die oorgang net 'n plesier. Die Welkom Nissan wenspan maak my geweldig trots, omdat hulle ons kliënte die vriendelikste en beste diens moontlik offer. Jagluiperds verkies wild Alet van der Walt
NAVORSING wat pas in Botswana op jagluiperdmis gedoen is, het bewys dié roofdiere vang en vreet eintlik baie min vee. Volgens die Universiteit van Washington se webblad, www.conservation.org, het die jagluiperdnavorser Lorraine Boast navorsing gedoen omdat jagluiperds dikwels deur boere doodgemaak word omdat hulle daarvan verdink word dat hulle baie vee vang. Jagluiperds en ander roofdiere se natuurlike habitat word ál kleiner en dan word hulle dikwels ook verkeerdelik vir veeverliese geblameer. Boast se navorsing is in die noordweste van Botswana gedoen waar die diere deur baie grondeienaars as ’n groot oorsaak van veeverliese beskou word. Plase in Botswana is baie groot en dit is moeilik om karkasse van dooie diere op te spoor. Teen die tyd wat die eienaar die dooie vee opspoor, is dit dikwels te laat om die werklike oorsaak van die vrekte vas te stel. ’n Span navorsers het op 26 jagplase jagluiperdmis bymekaar gemaak om te ontleed. Sommige van dié plase hou ook vee soos beeste, bokke en skape aan, terwyl ander weer met wild boer. Hoewel die plase meestal omhein is, glip roofdiere dikwels deur heinings. Plaaseienaars het aan navorsers gesê jagluiperds vang baie springbokke. Hulle het gesê hulle verloor jaarliks gemiddeld 23 wildsbokke weens jagluiperds.
Die misontledings het egter ’n ander prentjie geskets. Die jagluiperds het eintlik baie min springbokke geëet en meer waterbokke gevang. Die misontledings het ook bewys dat plase so min as 1,5 beeste per jaar weens jagluiperds verloor en tussen twee en tien wildsbokke word jaarliks op ’n plaas deur dié roofdiere gevang. Die navorsers sê ook die meeste mis is die van mannetjies wat meer diere sal vang en vreet. Hulle glo die wyfies en kleintjies se verbruik is nog minder. Die misontledings dui daarop dat 60% van die jagluiperd se dieet uit koedoes, duikers, steenbokke en hase bestaan. Jagluiperds sal selfs in gebiede waar drie keer meer vee as wilde diere voorkom, die vee vermy en eerder sy natuurlike wilde prooi vreet. Boast sê boere glo jagluiperds vang baie springbokke, maar dié bokke word ál minder omdat mense hul habitat uitwis. Grasvlaktes in Botswana word ál kleiner en beboste gebiede bied aan roofdiere die geleentheid om makliker springbokke te vang. Die feit dat jagluiperds dag- en nagdiere is, maak dat hulle dikwels as die sondedaars gesien word. Plaaseienaars sien hulle meer gereeld as ander roofdiere en neem dan aan dat hulle vir die meeste verliese verantwoordelik is. Boast sê dit sal in die toekoms belangrik wees om te verseker dat genoeg wild in gebiede bly om sodoende te verseker dat roofdiere soos die jagluiperd eerder sy natuurlike prooi as vee vang.

DIE inwoners van die Charlotte Moll Haven in Virginia is onlangs by die Saddles Country Saloon in die dorp met eet en drinkgoed bederf. Hulle is ook deur die plaaslike orkes van Saddles vermaak. Dié inwoners is geestelik en liggaamlik gestremd en die eienaars van Saddles, Stanley en Elmare Grib, het dit goed gedink om hulle te onthaal. Saddles beplan om ook vanjaar ’n vleisbraai vir die Ha ven te reël en wil voortaan meer by dié inwoners betrokke wees. Mense wat stukkende of verouderde looprame het, asook rolstoele wat nie meer in gebruik is nie, kan dit by Saddles in Virginia aflewer. Saddles sal dit herstel en vir die Charlotte Moll Haven gee. Gold FM nearly on air GOLDFIELDS residents are waiting with bated breath for the imminent opening of Gold FM at the Welkom Square. Frank Jonker, chairman of the board, said the radio station was awaiting the final installation of the transmission equipment from Sentech. “According to Sentech, this can take between six to eight weeks. This will give Gold FM the opportunity to finalise the offices and studio and fill the required presenter slots with suitably-qualified and experienced candidates from our community,” said Jonker. Gold FM’s programmes will consist of 65% music and 35%

MARTEL PIENAAR van Hen nenman vertel dat hierdie twee honde “ma” en “dog ter” is. Die mahond se naam is Klippies en sy is nege jaar oud. Die ander hond se naam is Roxy, sy is twee jaar oud en kom uit ‘n vorige werpsel van Klippies. Hulle het gelyk drag tig geraak en ’n dag uitmekaar babahondjies gekry. Van Klip pies se werpsel het net een oorleef. “Ons het hom die naam Luitenant gegee, maar die volgende oggend is Luite nant ook dood,” sê Martel. Roxy het toe by Klippies inge kruip en haar babahondjies daar begin kry. Sy het drie hondjies gekry wat almal spekvet en gesond is. THE Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition, presented in association with the Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein, has been launched, with R10 000 in prize money up for grabs. This Free State visual arts competition is aimed at discovering new and emerging Free State-based artists and to provide broad corporate and public exposure. “We believe that in art, one has a medium which pushes boundaries and perceptions and challenges us to evolve. Accordingly, we have launched the Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition to boldly state our primary intention of identifying talent and a new generation of artists and remind us of the power of creativity,” says Sam Moleko, director at Phatshoane Henney Attorneys. A further distinguishing aspect of the competition is the integration of technology platforms and social media to increase accessibility and public exposure. The selected artists and their work will be showcased on the official art competition website (www.phinc.co.za/art) and shared via social media, enabling engagement from the public and, finally, nominations for the Public Choice Award. The competition is open to all South African artists that reside in or are primari-
ly resident in the Free State, are 18 years or older and have not held a solo exhibition at a commercial gallery involving more than 20 works. To provide interested artists with further information, a non-compulsory information session will be presented from 15:00 to 16:00 on Tuesday, 3 May, at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum. Entries may be submitted between 5 and 11 September. After first-round shortlisting, selected artists’ work will be exhibited at Oliewenhuis and also profiled on the website from 20 October. After this, an independent panel of judges will conduct a final-round evaluation. The prize-giving will be held on 17 November. The first prize is R50 000 and the runner-up will receive R20 000. There are two merit prizes valued at R10 000 each and one Public Choice Award prize valued at R10 000. Winners and selected artists will be featured in Phatshoane Henney Attorneys’ monthly newsletter for 12 months following the competition. Winners and selected artists will also be featured in the 2017 calendar of Phatshoane Henney Attorneys. Raw talent celebrated
Breathtaking LEARNERS from schools in Matjhabeng, as well as members of the public, had the amazing experience of watching dancers from Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) performing Connections at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre on Friday, 22 April. This performance was made even more special by the fact that the majority of the dancers originate from Thabong in Matjhabeng. The stunningly choreographed Kwela dance was choreographed by Catch Fire Waya Waya (the Thabong group of dancers). The other dances were jointly performed by dancers of MIDM and Catch Fire Waya Waya. Pictured is the entire group of dancers who took part in Friday’s performance. The production is a compilation of different works created by MIDM members and trainees, together with the ten young local Catch Fire Waya Waya students. THE Central University of Technology’s Traces of Ink, a poetry and arts society, will presents the annual Word Unchained Arts Charity Event at the CUT Welkom Campus on 7 May from 12:00 to 16:00. It will encompass an array of artistic displays ranging from poetry recitals, dance, singing and rapping and other forms of expression in all their divine differences. The line-up of the day will include performances from some of Welkom’s finest, including Lady Black Poet, Daughter Die-Ann, McScene, Royal Souls, Melodic Poet, Luhle and many more, including performances from public representatives. Word Unchained is a platform that was initiated with the dual aim of providing young artists with a space to showcase their talents while also supporting, raising funds for and shedding light on notable charities within our community. This year, Word Unchained will be in collaboration with the Matjhabeng Rape Intervention Care Centre, an organisation that offers personalised counselling and necessary support systems to victims of rape, sexual abuse and related
social ills. This worthy organisation was chosen for its ability to help raise awareness about the ramifications of rape and female disempowerment that is found to be wide-spread and therefore heavily stigmatised within our communities and social spaces. It will include a panel of honourable guests such as a renowned child and family psychologist Dr Oupa Makola and victim empowerment counsellors of Families South African (Famsa), South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca) and the Department of Social Development. Dus voed elke kaartjie wat vir die Vir Ons Kinders projek-verkoop word, een kind vir een dag, sonder dat dit enige luukses insluit. Só het Nicolene du Toit van Engo Vrystaat onlangs op die bekendstellingsgeleentheid van die Vir Ons Kinders-projek vertel. In die 2015-’16-boekjaar was slegs 26% van Engo se totale inkomste staatsubsidies, dus is hierdie projek noodsaaklik vir Engo se voortbestaan. Dié jeugsorgsentrums is nie-winsgewende organisasies wat kinders voltyds versorg wat deur die kinderhof van hul ouerhuise verwyder is, omdat hulle ’n behoefte aan sorg en beskerming het. Engo het R1 933 per maand of R66,45 per dag nodig om aan al die behoeftes van ’n kind te voorsien. Dit sluit kos, klere, vervoer, medies en onderwys in. Dít sluit personeelsalarisse uit. Daar word meer as 800 kinders tussen die ouderdom van 0 en 18 jaar in 34 jeugsorgsentrums en huise oor die Vrystaat heen versorg. Die sentrums en huise skep ’n huislike atmosfeer vir kinders en is binne die
gemeenskap geleë. Die doel is om kinders binne die gemeenskap te laat inpas. Daar word ook bykomende hulp aan ongeveer 3 000 kinders verleen, wat in risiko-omstandighede leef. Die staat voorsien in sowat 60% van die begrotingsbehoeftes wat nodig is om die kinders te versorg. Alle ander geld moet deur insamelingsprojekte soos die Vir Ons Kinders-projek ingesamel word. Die Vir Ons Kinders-projek ten bate van die Vrystaat-jeugsorgsentrums het op Woensdag 27 April op Bloemskou begin. Dié projek word vanjaar vir die agtste keer aangepak. Die sluitingsdatum van die kompetisie is 25 November. Vyf finaliste sal op 9 Januarie 2017 met die hulp van PwC aangekondig word. Die finale trekking is op 20 Januarie 2017 in Bloemfontein. Die wenner sal met ’n nuwe Chevrolet Spark Campus wegry. Die Vir Ons Kinders-projek sou nie moontlik gewees het sonder die ondersteuning van ons getroue borge nie. Couple robbed at home A VIRGINIA couple were robbed at gunpoint in their home on Sunday, 24 April. Four men armed with firearms and wearing balaclavas barged into the couple’s home in Harmony at 19:20. The 32-year-old complainant says the four suspects aimed the guns at his wife and took her to the bedroom, where they demanded money from her. The complainant says the perpetrators took R300, jewellery worth R2 000, a plasma TV and cellphones. They fled the
scene without hurting anyone and no shots were fired. “It is not clear whether they fled on foot or in a vehicle,” said Lt. Malebo Khosana, a spokesperson for the Thabong Police Cluster. The commander of the Thabong Cluster, Maj.Gen. Lerato Molale, appealed to community members to provide clues. “We also urge community members to lock their burglar doors at all times,” said Molale. Nurses Day
History a proud one NURSING remains a profession of caring and service to those in need, although it has developed throughout history, seeing a transformation in practice, types of caregivers, roles and policy changes. Many notable nurses have worked to revolutionise this career and have allowed nursing to evolve while simultaneously providing better care and circumstances in many situations. The earliest nurses never attended nursing school; they were often nuns or other women who provided care for the sick, poor or homeless without family support. Women were frequently called in to work as midwives to help deliver babies, or as wet nurses to breastfeed. During the Middle-Ages, early hospitals were operated by nurses who were often affiliated with religious organisations. Many of these institutions were places for patients to die, with nurses providing comfort during the final hours. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the nursing profession expanded to include care of soldiers during many prominent wars. In 1853, Florence Nightingale served as a nurse during the Crimean War, during which she not only cared for the injured, but set standards of cleanliness in the areas where she worked. Her sanitary reforms reduced the overall incidence of infection where they were implemented. Florence gained the nickname “the lady with the lamp” as the result of her loving service to the British

The International Council of Nurses commemorates this important day each year with the production and distribution of the International Nurses Day (IND) kit. The IND kit 2016 contains educational and public information materials, for use by nurses everywhere. The IND theme for 2016 is: Nurses: A Force for Change: Improving health systems’ resilience. The content of this year’s kit, including the poster image,
are posted here as downloadable documents for use by individual nurses, associations, health ministries and health institutions. Though mainly commemorated around 12 May each year, IND activities continue for much of the year by nurses and others. May nurses strike? Teboho Setena NURSING practitioners are warned against embarking on strikes over wage and working conditions. In the wake of strikes, they are always urged to “think carefully” before going on strike and those in charge use keynote speeches to steer nurses away from strike action. When nurses protest, leaving patients unattended, the nurses would be reminded to uphold the Code of Ethics for nursing practitioners. In South Africa, this Code of Ethics for nursing serves to remind all nursing practitioners of their responsibilities towards individuals, families and communities. Responsibilities include amongst others,
protecting, promoting and restoring health, preserving life and alleviating suffering. The code states that such responsibilities will or should be carried out with the required respect for human rights, which include the right to life, choice and dignity, irrespective of age, colour, creed, culture, disability or illness, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, politics, race or social status. This Code of Ethics also serves as a declaration by nursing practitioners that they will always provide due care to the public to the best of their ability and to support each other in the process. It is based on the belief that the nursing profession embraces respect for life, human dignity and the rights of other persons.

‘Bekwaamdes’ stap van Kaap Rozanne Els “MENSE dink wat ons het, is aansteeklik; dat as hulle aan jou vat, hulle óók gestremd gaan raak.” Aan die woord is Oswald Kydd, ’n driekampwêreldkampioen wat in 1997 sy been in ’n fietsryongeluk verloor het toe ’n vragmotor oor sy been gery het. Sy regterbeen is bo sy knie geamputeer. Hy is een van 12 atlete wat Donderdag (05/05) op ’n tiendagaflos van 24 uur gaan vertrek, deels om onkundige idees soos dié in die kiem te smoor. Die atlete verdeel in twee groepe wat skofte van 12 uur elk aflê. In elke groep is daar atlete sonder liggaamlike gestremdhede én atlete wat na hulself as spesiaal bekwaam verwys. “Vir my is ‘gestremd’ ’n afbrekende woord,” sê Kydd. Kydd en die stigters van die Journey for Change-veldtog, Nicolene Mostert en Alun Davies, is dit eens dat elke mens ’n tekortkoming het en nie oor dieselfde vermoëns beskik nie.

Deel van die veldtog is om die gebruik van woorde soos “liggaamlike gestremdheid” met “spesiaal bekwaam” te vervang. “Ons wil aanvaarding hê. Ons is geensins anders as enige ander mens nie, juis omdat ons almal met goed sukkel. Op daardie manier is ons almal spesiaal bekwaam.” Dit is ook waarom Mostert en Davies moeite doen om “spesiaal bekwaam” die gebruiklike term te maak. “Ons is tot verskillende goed in staat en dit sluit die geestelike, sosiale en kognitiewe aspekte in,” sê hulle. Selfs sy vriende weet nie hoe om rondom hom op te tree nie, sê Kydd. “Hulle sal op Facebook skryf hoe inspirerend ek is, maar hulle sal dit nooit self vir my sê nie,” sê hy. Hy noem talle voorbeelde, selfs mense wat na hom staar as hy in die straat af stap. Daar is nou meer aanvaarding, maar dit skiet nog ver te kort. Die roete strek van Kaapstad tot Pretoria deur onder meer Bloemfontein, Theunissen en Kroonstad. Die span beoog om elke dag sowat 200 km af te lê.

Massyn hou oog op 44ste wenstreep Molly Green
DIE Goudveldse legende in sy eie tyd, Louis Massyn, durf vanjaar sy 44ste moordende Comrades-ultramarathon aan. Hy is vasberade om die ultramarathon in die toegelate tyd van 12 uur te voltooi. Die Comrades word op Sondag 29 Mei tussen Durban en Pietermaritzburg gehardloop. Louis het in 1973 die eerste keer aan dié uitmergelende wedloop deelgeneem. Barry Holland (Ballito, KZN) het sy eerste Comrades ook in 1973 voltooi en het die afgelope 43 jaar soos klokslag saam met Massyn by die beginpunt aangetree en die wedloop suksesvol voltooi. Dié twee Comrades-legendes is tot op hede die atlete wat die meeste Comrades-wedlope, 43 agtereenvolgens, voltooi het. Op hul hakke is die voormalige wenner (vier keer) Allan Robb, wat verlede jaar sy 42ste Comrades agtereenvolgens voltooi het. Massyn (65), ’n jare lange inwoner van Odendaalsrus, is op 24 Oktober 1950 in George gebore. Sy gesin het na Odendaalsrus verhuis en hy het sy skoolloopbaan aan die Hoërskool Wessel Maree voltooi. Massyn het drie weke gelede die O.R. Tambo-marathon (42,2 km) in Bloemfontein voltooi. “Vyf weke voor my eerste Comrades in 1973 het ek vir my hardloopskoene gesoek om die wedloop mee aan te pak,” vertel
Massyn. “Ek het toe my eerste paar Adidas-skoene vir R23 gekoop, maar die verkoopsman was verontwaardig dat ek slegs een paar gekoop het. Hy het gesê een paar skoene sal nooit oor daardie lang afstand hou nie. “Die man het my eindelik so bang gepraat dat ek later vir my nog ’n paar hardloopskoene gekoop het, maar cheapies (R4,99). “Ek het toe die wedloop, wat ook die eerste padwedloop van my lewe was, met die cheapies begin en hulle in hul maai in gehardloop. “Maar, ek het hulle gedra tot by die einde, met groot bloedblase op die koop toe.” Hy het vanjaar sy 41ste Twee Oseane-ultramarathon (56 km) agtereenvolgens voltooi en is die eerste atleet ooit wat die Comrades- en Twee Oseane-wedlope elk meer as 40 jaar agtereenvolgens kon baasraak. “Ek het verlede jaar die Comrades in 11:24 voltooi, maar ek hoop om vanjaar onder 11 uur te draai.” Vanjaar tydens die Comrades Expo in Durban is Massyn vir ’n internasionale onderhoud met die besturende direkteur van die Boston-marathon genooi. Die artikel sal in 2017 in die brosjure van die Boston-marathon gepubliseer word. Massyn reël ook weer vanjaar die Pre-Comrades-wedloop op 14 Mei om 07:00, asook die Pre-Comrades-kerkdiens op 22 Mei.

Koning Rugby tree as wenner uit stryd Molly Green DIE eerste rugbyspan van die WelkomGimnasium het nou wel nie daarin geslaag om as oorwinnaar van die Wildeklawer-rugbytoernooi wat in Kimberley gehou is, terug te keer nie, maar die spelers het hulle goed van hul taak gekwyt. Koning Rugby het gewen. Te danke aan Gimmies se vertonings dié seisoen is die span deur die SuidAfrikaanse Rugby-unie (Saru) genooi om as sý uitnodigingspan aan die prestigetoernooi deel te neem. Herman Masimla van Saru het in Welkom gesê dié toernooi sal aan die Gimmiespan ’n geleentheid bied om te wys waartoe hulle in staat is. “Dit is ’n groot eer om daar te kan speel.” Daar was ses keurders by die toernooi teenwoordig wat betrokke by die kies van ’n Suid-Afrikaanse skolepan en Suid-Afrikaanse skole-A-span was. “Dit gaan nie net meer oor die Cravenweek nie. Ons is gedurig besig om talent te identifiseer,” het Masimla gesê. Duke Jantjies, kaptein van die Gim-
mies, het met sy leierskap op die Wildeklawertoernooi beïndruk. Hy het reeds in 2015 Cravenweek gespeel en staan ’n goeie kans om vanjaar as kaptein van die Griffons se Cravenweekspan gekies te word. Die Gimmies het hul eerste wedstryd Saterdag (30/04) teen die Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale met 15-20 verloor. Oakdale word onder die vyf topskolerugbyspanne in die land gereken. In die wipplank-wedstryd Maandag (02/05) teen die Hoërskool Noord-Kaap het Noord-Kaap, nadat speeltyd verstreke was, ’n strafskop behaal wat die eindtelling op 34-32 in Noord-Kaap se guns gebring het. Spanne van 20 van Suid-Afrika se topskole was op die Wildeklawertoernooi in aksie. Die ander deelnemende spanne was van die hoërskole van Paarl-Gimnasium, Afrikaans Hoër Pretoria, Grey-kollege, Monument, E.G Jansen, Menlopark, Paarl Boys High, Paul Roos, Outeniqwa, Oakdale Landbou, Boland Landbou, Selbourne College, Diamantveld, NoordKaap, Stellenberg, HTS Middelburg, HTS Louis Botha, Waterkloof en Garsfontein.
