’n Treurspel het Maandag (31/10) in Jan Hofmeyr afgespeel toe ’n werker van die Harmony-goudmyn in ’n fratsongeluk dood is. Die ongeluk het omstreeks 10:00 op die verkeerseiland oorkant Diesel Electric gebeur toe twee Harmony-werknemers aan ’n foutiewe waterpyp gewerk het. ’n Ingeligte bron van die munisipaliteit sê ’n probleem het by ’n klep van ’n watertoevoerpyp van Sedibeng Water ontstaan. Dié waterpyp strek onderdeur Jan Hofmeyrweg en die verkeerseiland na die myn. Die munisipaliteit se betrokkenheid, sê hy, was bloot dat dit op een van hulle verkeerseilande gebeur het.

Die werker, James Charlton (59) van Meloding Virginia, was in die diep gat vasgekeer toe dele van die gat wat hulle gegrawe het, in duie gestort het. Marian van der Walt, woordvoerder van die Harmonygoudmyn, sê die gat is gegrawe om die watertoevoer vanaf die munisipaliteit na die
myngronde te herstel. Charlton was in die diep gat vasgevang toe die reusewaterpyp vermoedelik gebars het en die grondineenstoring veroorsaak het. Omstanders het die nooddienste ontbied en probeer om hom te red. Hulle kon daarin slaag om sy kop en bors uit te lig en hy
het toe nog asem gehaal, maar is egter kort ná die reddingspoging op die toneel dood verklaar. Van der Walt het die ongeluk as tragies bestempel en gesê dit word ondersoek. Sy sê die voorval het nie op die myn se terrein plaasgevind nie en kan nie as ’n mynongeluk beskou word nie.
Two of five Lesotho nationals were fatally shot in Lindsey Road in Rheederspark, Welkom, on Saturday night (29/10). A manhunt has been launched to find the suspects, probably Lesotho nationals. Also, during a separate incident at Geduld Mine over the weekend, one Lesotho national was fatally shot and two Basotho sustained gunshot wounds. They were admitted to a hospital in Welkom. In both the incidents the suspects shot at the police. The police suspected that the shootings might be linked with conflict over territory for illegal mining operations in the Goldfields. A large contingent of police have been deployed in Welkom to address the situation. Anti-crime measures will include road blocks, stop and search and other operations within the Welkom precinct. Residents have been requested to continue to co-operate with police and to provide information that could lead to the arrrest of the perpetrators of these crimes. SAPS arrests Police appoint new managers suspects A Nigerian national was arrested by the Welkom K9 Unit, after a tip-off, for the possession of 80 g of Cat with a street value of R16 000. Members of the Welkom K9 Unit and the Thabong Crime Intelligence arrested the 31-year-old man in a house in Phambili Street in Reitzpark, Welkom. The suspect appeared in court on a charge of dealing in drugs. The case has been remanded for further investigation. In two other separate incidents, on Monday (31/10), members of the Welkom K9 Unit arrested nine suspects for the theft of copper cable and two for the possession of dangerous weapons. Two municipal employees were also arrested for copper cable theft. They had stolen the cable from the municipal workshop in Fourth Street, Welkom. On Tuesday morning (01/11) the executive mayor of Matjhabeng, Nkosinjani Speelman, and top municipal officials, identified the copper at the Welkom Police Station in Jan Hofmeyer Road.

The SAPS Thabong introduces two newly appointed managers who are entrusted by the Acting National Commissioner to steer the Academy in the right direction on behalf of the organisation. LtCol NJ Mokheleli was appointed as the new support head after she served in the rank of captain for 11 years and worked as the section head of finance. Mokheleli expressed her gratitude and assured the acting national commissioner that she will deliver on her promise of serving the organisation with honesty, fairness, pride and transparency. The Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit needs the community’s assistance to track down the suspect that allegedly raped a woman in Bronville in 2010. The incident happened on Thursday, 1 April 2010. The victim, a 26-year-old female, was raped in her home at Hani Park, Bronville. According to the victim, she heard someone entering the house and thought it was her boyfriend. But it was an unknown man, dark in complexion and about 1,70 m tall, standing beside her bed holding a big knife. She further alleges that he deman-
ded that she take off her clothes, after which he raped her. She went on to report that the suspect then heard dogs barking and ran out of the house. Her boyfriend, who was coming to visit the house at that time, saw a man running out of the shack. However, the suspect managed to escape, as the boyfriend could not stop him. He is still on the run and his whereabouts are still unknown to the police. The case is being investigated by WO Jerry Motaung of Thabong FCS. ’n Skenking van R120 000 gaan verseker dat die deure van die Dierebeskermingsvereniging (DBV) in Welkom vir eers oopbly. Dié skenking is soos “manna uit die lug”, sê Maureen Nel, die voorsitter van die vereniging. “Die geld is ’n reddingsboei, want die kanse dat die DBV se deure kon sluit, was groot.” Sy sê trane van vreugde het behoorlik gevloei toe die personeel van die DBV in Welkom hoor dat dié organisasie ’n skenking van R120 000 gaan ontvang. Die skenking is moontlik gemaak deur ’n Welkomse diereliefhebber, Myra Pretorius. Sy het ’n prys in die “Won a Million-kompetisie” van ’n bekende bankgroep gewen. “Ons nood was groot. My pa het altyd die twee ronde, afgesnyde punte vir my gegee. Ek het my verbeel ek

House robbery has become a major concern for the police in Thabong. Sgt Mamello Mokhuoane, spokesperson, says most cases involve three to five unknown men wearing balaclavas, and who are armed with firearms or sharp instruments. “Most robberies are reported over weekends, from Friday night to the early hours of Monday morning. There are
only a few cases which are reported during the week. “The Thabong police are working round the clock to arrest the suspects involved in the cases. “This is being done through tracing operations, as well as station and cluster operations,” says Mokhuoane. The sector commander and Community Policing Forum (CPF) hold regular meetings with the community to create awareness about house robberies and crimes which affect the different sectors.
The Thabong police are appealing to the community to attend these meetings, and to join the CPF structures, community patrols and neighbourhood watches. The Thabong police station commander, Brig. Nikiwe Hoaeane, is also making a plea to the community of Thabong to be vigilant in their neighbourhoods and report any suspicious criminal activities which may occur. Some crime awareness hints which will assist in the prevention of house robberies
and theft include: ) Know your neighbours and build a relationship of mutual trust and support. ) It is always best to arrange with persons living in the same street as you to be ready at all times to come to the rescue of one another in dangerous or suspicious times. ) Exchange phone numbers or signaling methods when you find yourself in distress. ) Keep cash and valuables at the bank or in a safe. ) Do not leave your keys in

Sodra hy die redes gekry het, gaan die kamer waarskynlik ’n interdik aanvra om die inwerkingstelling van die nuwe tariewe op te skort, hangende die afhandeling van ’n dringende aansoek om dit te hersien. Van der Merwe skets in sy hofverklaring die nuwe krisis wat die kwy-

In baie van die gevalle kan die ondernemings nie die buitensporige tariewe absorbeer nie, wat tot gevolg gaan hê dat hul produkte te duur gaan wees. Hy sê luidens sy inligting skuld die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit reeds R2 miljard aan Eskom. Daarop moet hy sowat R20 miljoen per maand aan rente betaal. Die munisipaliteit moet probeer om die geld iewers vandaan te kry en spits hom nou op die sakegemeenskap toe. THE 23-year old Boitumelo Mokote, who was born and bred in Virginia, is making waves on television. Mokote was raised by her grandfather after her mother passed away in 2005. She matriculated at the Mamelo High School in Virginia in 2011. After school she studied Human Resource Management at the Welkom College, but soon realised that was not her passion. In February she went to the SABC studios in Auckland Park in Johannesburg to ask for auditions after she realised that acting was her passion. They had an interview with her and shortly after that she was called to be the guest presenter for YO-TV, and after YO-TV she was a contestant in a programme called Fan Base. Dancing with dogs is a sport that is gaining popularity among dog owners and animal lovers in South Africa. “It is a sport which the owner and dog can enjoy together. The dog is taught tricks and then music, a theme, rhythm, costumes and props are added to make up a whole routine,” says Elize Visser from Virginia. Visser, a member of Clever Companion Dog School in Riebeeckstad, started practising dog dancing with her two beagles. She says they started off with obedience and socialization classes, taught by Karin Delport of Clever Companion Dog School. “I then saw videos and items of dog dancing and wanted to start as well. One thing lead to another and I registered with the South African Dog Dancing Association. I taught myself via the internet and train my dogs myself. Delport also helps me,” says Visser.
Visser entered her beagles, Pernans and Katryn, into their very first dog dancing competition in Johannesburg on 8 October. “They did extremely well for first-timers. Pernans got a third place in the rookie class, as well as a special prize for most outstanding trick performed by a rookie,” says Elize. “It was a great learning experience. We got to see the champions in action and the experts shared their expertise with me. I brought back many tips and experience and I cannot wait to help my fellow Clever Companion dog owners and to motivate them. We encourage all dog owners to join us and start dog dancing. It keeps you and your dog fit and you have fun while building a bond with your dog. “Just to have fun with your dog is rewarding enough. I cannot wait for the next competition. It is very hard work and you must have patience to train your dog, but it is so rewarding in the end. I just love spending time with my dogs and I know they love spending time with me,” she says. If anybody is interested in obedience or socialisation classes, dog agility and dog dancing, or if you have behavioural problems with your dog, you can attend classes. Classes are every Saturday from 14:00 to 15:00 (expert classes), 15:00 to 16:00 (puppy classes) and 16:00 to 17:00 (adult dog classes). The lessons are on the Riebeeckstad Primary School sport fields. Elize and Karin also do demonstrations at schools, birthday parties, functions and festivals. Entrepreneur dreams big Peace Nthunya
Welkom resident Peace Nthunya knows first-hand the thrill of doing well at school. This entrepreneur and co-founder of educational business, Enim Tutors, earned the nickname “Meneer” from the neighbourhood kids growing up, referring to his studiousness and excellent behaviour. In high school the academic acknowledgement continued when he topped his biology class. This positive experience of learning shaped his future and led to the founding of his tutoring business. Nthunya started his career as a youth worker, and word of his ability to connect with the youngsters he taught, spread. Soon enough, the Department of Education invited him to facilitate HIV and life skills training in schools. Although it seemed that Nthunya had found his calling, in truth he struggled against the rigidity of set educational structures, which limited his ability to meet individual children’s needs. He wanted more flexibility and a better experience for the students he was teaching. “Good teachers need to have a creative approach,” he said. “What works for one student doesn’t necessarily work for another. You need to unlock the specific door for a youngster who is stuck. Our current schooling systems don’t allow for this, mainly because there are too many students and not enough teachers.” Nthunya and his business partner, Tshepang Mogorosi, are meeting these challenges head-on. Through their combined belief in the power of education, Enim Tutors was born. The business’ name comes from the conjoining of the letters “N” and “M’” the first letter of each of their surnames. Enim offers school kids alternative methods of learning, using tutoring and student feedback to inspire the individual student’s own
thirst for knowledge. “Tutoring becomes a form of self-reflection, enabling the tutors to diagnose and ameliorate teaching challenges. “We teach no more than five learners per session, so that individual learners get the tutor’s full attention. Unfortunately, many of our township kids who really need extra lessons can’t afford them, so we are always looking for sponsors to support youngsters in need of academic support,” he said. Nthunya and Mogorosi are adding a resource centre with a library and computer facilities in the near future to their offering. This multifaceted initiative will enable students to access resources such as online training and computer skills training, and to pursue online education in a quiet place where learning is cherished. Nthunya applied to join the SAB Foundation Tholoana Programme in 2015, and was one of just 15 small businesses in the Free State to be accepted. There were almost 500 applications from entrepreneurs in the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, making his acceptance into this two-year programme of mentorship, skills training and access to markets and finance all the more commendable. The value he places on his own education enables him to share his love of learning with his students with complete conviction. His open-mindedness inspires a similar approach in the youngsters who cross his path. Nthunya is already plotting a marketing plan with new ideas to help grow the business and its footprint. This, he hopes, will see more young people working towards a better future for themselves and their families. Although the well-known Welkom artist and restaurateur Giacomo Caruso (68) specialises in oil paintings, he is well-known for his pencil sketches. If he can work without interruption, it takes him about two hours to finish a sketch. “An artist should be left alone. If I am interrupted, or if someone makes me cross, the colours and lines that I use changes.” Giacomo was born in Italy. He started painting in Rome when he was seven years old. “I came to Welkom when I was 22 years old. My uncle, Nello Alpino, was the owner of The Pits and I started working for him. “I took over the Caponero
in 1969.” This well-known restaurant is one of the oldest restaurants under one owner in South Africa. “I worked full-time in the kitchen for about 17 years. “Doing managerial jobs can be boring and I started drawing sketches of friends and clients. “I first take a picture and then start drawing.” He says his sketches are very popular among his friends and clients. Giacomo also writes poetry. He and his wife, Monica, do not often visit Italy. Their son, Riccardo (23), studies art in Florence. “One day, when I finally retire, I want to paint full-time. “Running a restaurant is a full-time job.”
A new preschool is being erected in Welkom at a cost of R3,5 million. Once finished, about 200 children would be accommodated. The decision to build the school displays the confidence that Kingdom Ministries of Christ has in the future of Welkom, says Marina Hibbers, principal of the preschool. “While the poor economy and closing of businesses are rife in our country, we believe that the community of Welkom will benefit from the new preschool. “We started the project because we ran out of classrooms in the preschool, and the demand for good education based on biblical principles is very high in our region.

R classes are also in demand, mainly because we start with enrichment programs on tablets together with a combination of Letterland and Mysmartkid curriculum, which prepare them for the full curriculum in gr. 1,” she says. “We have appointed a therapist who will be stationed at the new preschool three days a week in order to evaluate and support our young learners in all the

The team ended sixth overall and a total of 833 teams from the Free State and the Eastern Cape entered the competition. Die deurwinterde, gewilde en sterk s senter van s die e Griffons, Japie e Nel, het beslu uit om nog nie e sy rugbystewels op te e hang nie. Hy gaan virr minstens nog ’n jaar vir die Perstruie uitdrraf. Dié besluit is met groot toejuiging in Grifffons-geledere verwelkom. Japie, wat binnek kort sy 34ste verjaardag vie er, doen reeds meer as 11 jaa ar lank vir die Perstruie diens. Hy het in 2015 reeds sy honderd-
ste wedstryd vir die Griffons gespeel. Japie het ’n werksgeleentheid in Middelburg gehad. Hy het egter besluit om dit van die hand te wys. Sy doelwit in sy laaste seisoen is om die Griffons te help om hul Eersteliga-kroon suksesvol te verdedig. Die Perses het reeds met hul voorseisoense voorbereiding begin. Dié binnesenter, wat die skaal op 118 kg trek, kan enige tyd as stut of flank ingespan word. In sy skooldae het hy vir die Goudveld-Hoërskool se tweede span uitgedraf. Hy was ’n goeie veldatleet en het in spiesgooi uitgeblink. Hy het later vir die Rovers-rugbyklub gespeel voordat die Griffons hom gekontrakteer het. Van 2005 tot 2010 het hy vir die Luiperds uitgedraf. Toe het Welkom en die Griffons hom teruggeroep en is hy terug Goudveld toe.
