THE seven gang members who were caught and convicted for a savage murder they had committed in 2014 in Kutloanong, have each been sentenced to life imprisonment. In addition, the seven have each been given three years for assault grievous bodily harm and three years for the Prevention of the Organised Crime Act (gangsterism). The accused, Edward Baile Tilo (23), Sabata Simon Phejane (24), Osama Herman Tsholo (29), Mulungisi Lincoln Mahloko (24), Promise Johannes Monauna (23), Molefi Clarens Ralethohlane (23) and Sibusiso Eddie Mvala (23), were found guilty in the Virginia Circuit Court. The sentencing took place on Friday (04/09). On the afternoon of 26 October 2014 Thabo Machel Mathe, the late Sakhumzi Boqwana (21) and their three friends who belong to a group called GP (Gangster Paradise) were on their way to a shop in K5, Kutloanong. The investigation was assigned to Det.WO Ditaba Marumo of the Welkom Cluster Murder Task Team. THE Thabong police arrested a 15-year-old boy on Tuesday (08/09) for the gruesome and brutal murder of a 30-year-old man. The murder is gang related. The minor is a member of the gang Fire Boys. The alleged murder occurred on Monday (07/09) at about 22:00. The 15-year-old suspect and his gang allegedly stabbed a 30-year-old man, Simon Motseko Lenka. He is alleged to have been a member of the TDK gang. Lenka was stabbed in his neck. The gang members then hung him from a devil’s fork fence not far from his home

THE Welkom Cluster Police Stations held a successful operation, Operation Fiela, during which 87 people were arrested over a three-day period for different crimes committed within the Welkom cluster stations. These are Welkom, Bothaville, Odendaalsrus, Allanridge, Wesselsbron and the Tactical Response Team. The arrests emanated from possession of drugs, driving under the influence of liquor, drinking in public, possession of dangerous weapons, drunkenness, malicious damage to property, shoplifting, possession of dagga, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and contravening Liquor Act. Acting cluster commander of Welkom, Brig. Mzondi Mojafi, applauded the members for a job well done and thanked the members for making the operation a success. Minor murder suspect in Themba, Thabong. Members of the Thabong Police Community Service Centre (CSC), Sgt Tlalanyane Helepi and Const. Lebona Ramokhoase, were on patrol when they were summoned to the scene. They found Lenka, who was identified by family members, hanging on the devil’s fork fence. He was certified dead at the scene.

Helepi and Ramokhoase, while still at the scene of the crime, received information from eye witnesses which they then immediately followed up. They caught one of the suspects, a 15-year-old, who cannot be identified as he is still a minor. “The 15-year-old suspect’s father gave police a written statement that he did not want to take responsibility for his child.

“The 15-year-old was detained after the necessary procedures had been followed as he is a minor,” said Sgt Mamello Mokhuoane of Thabong SAPS Communication, Marketing and Liaison. The minor appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (09/09). The Thabong police have initiated a man hunt for the other members of Fire Boys who were involved in the murder of Lenka. Sy moes aan die hof verduidelik hoe gestremd die kind is. Albei die kind se ouers is intussen oorlede. Op 26 Augustus vanjaar is die DNS-verslag ontvang en kon die staat bewys die bloed aan Sefate se klere is dié van die minderjarige gestremde kind. Sefate het met die aanhoor van die nuwe bewyse sy pleit op al vier aanklagte van verkragting van onskuldig na skuldig verander. Sefate is tot lewenslange tronkstraf gevonnis. Die direkteur van openbare vervolging in die Vrystaat, adv. Xolisile Khanyile, het almal wat aan die saak gewerk het, met die suksesvolle vervolging gelukgewens. International directors are frequenting Welkom because of the suitable weather conditions,” said Khaya Mqeke, spokesperson for the Lejweleputswa District Municipality. The shooting of the first international film, Journey is the destination, is in full swing. The region will once again be a centre of activities

in days to come. Mqeke said this will be an economic boost for the city. Thumbs up for women contractors Teboho Setena THE Free State MEC for Human Settlement, Olly Mlamleli, plans strong action to to resolve a long standing dispute which has temporarily halted the construction of the Merriespruit community residential complex in Meloding, Virginia. She was speaking to Vista during an inspection of two multi-million rand housing projects in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality last Tuesday (1/09). The two projects are Thandanani in Thabong, Welkom, and the Merriespruit community residential complex in Meloding, Virginia. Mlamleli was accompanied by deputy minister of Human Settlements, Zou Kota-Fredericks. The purpose of their visit was also to assess progress of work at the Thandanani project undertaken by the women’s build programme which seeks to empower women contractors, and to officially hand over houses that were completed by them. Both the Thandanani and Merriespruit projects are government initiatives. Mlamleli and Kota-Fredericks were impressed with the quality of work in the building of the houses at Thandanani in which both male and female contractors were involved. With the Merriespruit complex, however, it was just the opposite. Mlamleli expressed concern about the

negative impact the prolonged dispute between the main contractors and the local sub-contractors had on delivering the Merriespruit complex. The disagreement which centred on

payment and allocation of work to sub-contractors arose in February this year. Since then construction work has been halted. This has resulted in the multi-million rand Merriespruit project not being completed in

time. Construction work at the halted project began in 2013 with the completion date set for March this year. This date has now been extended indefinitely, with authorities of the Department of Human Settlement trying to resolve the dispute. Mlamleli said intervention from her department to resolve the differences between the main contractor and the local sub-contractors, would be a last resort. The latter, it seems, will not budge in their demand to be prioritised over outsiders in allocation of work at the Merriespruit project. “I have appointed an administrator to mediate in the dispute. I’m going to have a meeting and call everybody to agree on terms and conditions there. I’m going to set a realistic time-line to resolve the dispute at Merriespruit. I’m going to be on their back and will put my foot down to ensure there is progress,” said Mlamleli. Both Mlamleli and Kota-Fredericks gave women contractors building houses at Thandanani the thumbs up. “I’m humbled by the work of women contractors. Their work brings us very close to the 50-50 % target of the Free State government in allocation of work to female and male construction companies. This is in line with the Freedom Charter that stipulates that people shall have houses and security,” said Mlamleli.

Dit op sigself is verstommend. Wat ’n yslike foefie. Hoekom word daar gewag totdat die niemandsraad se stadsingenieur dit nie kan bekostig om twee waterlekke – soos op die hoek van Derrick- en Rianastraat en die hoek van Dave Fredericks- en Rianastraat – te herstel nie? Dan praat ons nie eens van die kortmasstraatlig voor Dave Fredericksstraat 20 nie. Ek weet nie of die straatlamp dalk ’n miljoen rand of meer kos en dit daarom nie vervang kan word nie. Of sal dit dalk tien mans verg om dit te vervang – een om die gloeilamp vas te hou en nege om die leer waarop hy staan in die rondte te draai sodat die gloeilamp inskroef? Of is dit dalk dat die mense by die afdeling van die stadsingenieur eenvoudig vergeet het waarom hulle daar is. Belastingbetalers kan darem seker nie verwag dat die departement iets aakligs moet doen soos om te werk nie. Van die finansiële afdeling praat ’n mens nie eens nie. Geen afdeling kan so moedswillig wees nie. Hoe gebeur dit dat 58% van die gereelde betalers die 42% wanbetalers moet dra? Asof dit nie reeds ’n onuithoudbare situasie geskep het nie, is die rekenaars van die departement elke eerste dag van die maand wanneer betalings gedoen moet word oudergewoonte van lyn af. Nee, raadslid Sebenzile, ek stel voor dat u aan hierdie sake van u stadsingenieur en finansiële afdeling aandag gee. U sal dan dalk uitvind dat dit u loon. Ek stel dit aan u dat u soveel foefies kan uitdink soos u wil, soos Operasie Patala, maar as u nie dié afdelings hard terugbring aarde toe nie, gaan dit u niks baat nie.

Would you please tell us why the serious water leaks on the corner of Derrick and Riana Street and the leak in Dave Frederick Street, just off the corner from Riana Street, have been left unattended to for days on end despite the leaks having been reported on several occasions? Secondly do you, Sir, mean to tell me (and the rest of the residents) that this council cannot even afford to replace a light bulb on one short-masted streetlight in front of Dave Fredericks Steet number 20? I reported this light about 18 months ago. With all due respect, Sir, I really find this very hard to believe. Please also explain to the public why electricity and water meters are not properly read in Naudeville and why the readings are estimations that are always wrong. Or is it perhaps due to non-payment of the contractor that always performed this service for the council? Four arrested for murder

IN yet another gang related murder in Monyakeng, Wesselsbron, a man was brutally attacked with a rock and stabbed with knives by people who allegedly belong to a gang called Setso. Later that day four suspects were arrested by WO Tshehla Ntsane, Const. Naledi Maleme, Const. Olehile Motlhabane and Const. Modise Sehalo. All four suspects X Mojalefa Pule (19), Michael Mpheku (20), Marope Mahlaku (18) and Ramphela Manesa (22) X allegedly belong to a gang called Setso. They appeared in the Wesselsbron Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (08/09). The case was postponed until 15 September for bail application. They remain in custody.

Man injured Nomaqhawe Mtebele

RESIDENTS were shaken early last Saturday (05/09) morning when a bakkie crashed into the fence of a house in Koppie Alleen Road, Doorn. One man was injured when the bakkie collided into the metal fence. The man, who was alone in the vehicle, sustained head and leg injuries. According to Thabang Sekhonyana, a resident of the area, the vehicle crashed after spinning out of control. “The vehicle was going very fast and it seemed to be out of control after it had overtaken four other cars, only to hit the pavement,” he

explained. “It then rolled violently towards a house and crashed into the fence,” he said. Another resident, Thato Mokoena, recalls hearing a loud bang. “As soon as I heard a bang I ran outside to find a bakkie had crashed a few houses away,” he said. “The young man seemed disorientated after he was helped out of the vehicle,” he said. The crash took place in a business and residential area alongside the Koppie Alleen Main Road. When ER24 and Buthelezi EMS arrived at the scene they found the white Toyota lying on its side. There were no police officers at the scene of the accident.

Slimkoppe het sterre in die oë DIE Primêre Skool Hennenman is pas die tweede jaar agtereenvolgens as die Vrystaatse kampioen in die Astronomy Quiz-kompetisie vir laerskole aangewys. Helen van Eeden het agt jaar gelede begin om jaarliks die skool se sterrekunde-span af te rig. Suid-Afrikaanse Agentskap vir die Bevordering van Wetenskap en Tegnologie (SAAS-

TA) bied jaarliks dié vasvra-kompetisie vir laerskole aan. Jaar ná jaar presteer Helen se span slimkoppe uitmuntend. Die afgelope agt jaar het die Primêre Skool Hennenman ses keer tweede in die Vrystaat geëindig. Die span van verlede jaar het vierde landswyd geëindig. Vanjaar se span neem op 8 Oktober aan die nasionale eindronde by die planetarium in Johannesburg deel.

‘Education key to success’ “NOTHING is as fulfilling as to help somebody,” said Percival Khoarane who started the Eros Khoarane Foundation of Hope and Dreams with his mother, Lerato. In the first year the foundation provided 98 learners with school uniforms and shoes. The Khoarane family from Virginia believes education is the key to future success. Mufare Trading, Aldam Estate and the foundation took hands to make a difference in the lives of poor learners. The 98 children who benefitted so far, are from the Emboniswene and Boase Primary Schools and the Reatlehile

Secondary School. Besides the assistance with clothing, the foundation also decided to prove to the learners that education can open doors for one and that hard work is beneficial. Every school term, top learners receive vouchers for luxury accommodation at the Aldam Estate. The voucher is for four persons sleeping in one of the chalets and it includes meals for the whole weekend. Another incentive is vouchers for a Sunday meal for four at the resort. The foundation has now received requests from as far as Koffiefontein to help struggling schools with basic necessities.

Goldfields movie Marti Will LEFT ALONE, a full-length movie written and created for the Goldfields by Goldfielders, starring Goldfielders will be officially launched in the Oppenheimer Theatre on 18 September. Left Alone will keep the audience in suspense. This heart-wrenching movie contains all the elements of a true thriller, but at the same time has all the elements of genuine and true human drama. It is sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats from the first bar of dramatic music, until the breath-taking last moment. The movie has strong musical elements. “The musical score is written by local musicians,” said the script writers and creators of this local movie phenomenon, Kgotso Mokhanoi and Gabriel Ntaote. The storyline is based on the lives of a local family, a father, mother and their two children. The father is falsely accused of murder and so their lives fall apart. The story is jam-packed with deceit, murder, heartbreak and desperation X all the elements needed for a true drama. “Nail-biting suspense,” said Kgotso. Gabriel and Kgotso have directed and produced the movie under the auspices of their registered production company, RK Studios.

Tournament held DUE to the inclement weather the region experienced the past weekend, the organisers of the Matjhabeng cup soccer tournament postponed the event to 12 September. The event will still be held at the school grounds of the Technical High School Welkom (THS).

ROVERS claimed all three trophies in the Griffons Rugby Competition. The first team won the Griffons Challenge Cup, beating Kroonstad 28-19 in the final. They also beat Hennenman 46-6 in the first league final. The second team beat Odendaalsrus 27-3 in the second League final. Rovers were also well represented in various Griffon squads. They have one rugby player in the u.19 team, eight in the u.21 team and eight in the Elande team. The annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday, 30 September, at 18:30 in the clubhouse. Tydens die o.16Grant Khomo-week 2013 het Jason vir die Griffons uitgedraf. Daarna het hy in die o.18-Cravenweek, asook in die o.19-Absa Curriebekker-kompetisie gespeel. Vanjaar is hy die o.18-Griffons se kaptein en speel weer in die o.18-Cravenweek. Hy het ook vanjaar vir die SuidAfrikaanse o.18-skoleA-span gespeel wat in die internasionale o.18-reeks deelgeneem het. Jason se leuse is: “Niemand kan vir my sê daar is geen grense nie, want daar is voetspore op die maan.” Meer oor Let’s Play Oor die afgelope paar jaar is SuperSport as sportgesag in Suid-Afrika gevestig. Met so ’n sterk sportinvloed binne die Suid-Afrikaanse mark, is SuperSport perfek geposisioneer om hierdie krag te ontgin en om die publiek en maatskappye te motiveer om werklik ’n verskil in die samelewing te maak. SuperSport het opgemerk dat daar groot probleme bestaan wat die ontwikkeling van kinders strem omdat vaardighede wat geleer word deur speel, liggaamlike opvoeding en sport ernstig ontbreek het. Dit was met hierdie insig dat die Let’s Play-projek in November 2005 gestig is – met die doel om bewustheid van die maatskaplike situasie te verhoog en speel, fisieke aktiwiteit en sport in skole aan te moedig. Nuwe kaptein van Perstruie Molly Green DIE sterk deurwinterde binnesenter van die Griffons, Japie Nel, is die nuwe kaptein van die Perstruie. Hy volg Nicky Steyn op wat sy rugbystewels opgehang en ’n betrekking in Dakar aanvaar het. Die nuwe onderkaptein is die flank Martin Sithole. Japie en Martin is twee van die Griffons se voorste driedrukkers. Die Griffons kom Saterdag in Potchefstroom teen die Luiperds van Noordwes te staan. Dit sal die Griffons se derde wedstryd in die eerste liga van die Curriebeker wees. Die Noord-Vrystaters het reeds met die Bolandse Kavaliers met 62-24 in Welkom afgereken en verlede Saterdag in Oos-Londen ’n oorwinning van 31-16 oor die Bulhonde van Grens behaal. Japie (33), wat ook bekend staan as die Ysterman van die Griffons, het reeds meer as 100 wedstryde vir die Perstruie gespeel.
