FESTIVAL DO NORTE EL ‘ALL STAR’ DE LA MÚSICA ESPAÑOLA FESTIVAL DO NORTE: THE 'ALL-STAR' OF SPANISH MUSIC

El regreso del Festival do Norte se define por el producto nacional. La apuesta por los grupos españoles ha sido decidida este año, al menos si se tienen en cuenta las primeras tandas de confirmaciones del festival arousano, que forman un auténtico 'all star' de la escena estatal. Sin duda, el punto álgido del festival en el plano emotivo será el retorno de Los Enemigos, que en Vilagarcía harán una de sus pocas paradas gallegas en su gira de reunión. El grupo de Josele Santiago, sinónimo de credibilidad rockera, ha dejado una marca imborrable en el imaginario colectivo de varias generaciones de españoles; entre ellos, por supuesto, numerosísimos gallegos. Además, el primer día (viernes 27 de abril) pasarán por el Recinto Exterior Fexdega de Vilagarcía dos grupos españoles en la frontera entre el indie y la popularidad masiva. El exponencial crecimiento de Love of Lesbian y La Casa Azul en los últimos cinco años les da derecho a ser cabezas de cartel. Asimismo, inaugurarán el festival bandas de ventas más reducidas, pero no menos interés: Pegasvs, Klaus & Kinski, Varry Brava y Dirty Socks, junto a los DJ's Amable y Rafa Morcego. El cabeza de cartel del segundo día es otra banda veterana y emblemática, el dúo electrónico que forman Alaska y Nacho Canut; es decir, Fangoria. Les acompañan en el cierre del festival el grupo de Mario Vaquerizo (Nancys Rubias) y el de Florent y Banin de Los Planetas (Los Pilotos), pero también los popularísimos Lori Meyers, El Columpio Asesino y Polock, además de los gallegos Disco Las Palmeras! Los DJ's elegidos para ese sábado 28 de abril son el coruñés HangTheGuille y Sandrita Dinamita.

NORMAN BLAKE AND JAD FAIR FOR A FEW PEOPLE

— En apenas unas horas agotaron las entradas para su concierto del 12 de Mayo en Ourense.

Todavía faltaban tres meses para el concierto pero en cuanto se conoció la noticia de que Norman Blake y Jad Fair actuarían juntos el 12 de mayo en el encantador Café Pop Torgal de Ourense, todos sabíamos que las entradas se agotarían en horas. Nos pusimos en la parrilla de salida con la mano en el ratón dispuestos a hacer click en la compra como si estuviéramos dentro de la portada del “Grand Prix”, el fantástico álbum de Teenage Fanclub, la banda que lidera Norman Blake. La posibilidad de disfrutar de la unión de dos de los grandes genios del pop independiente de las pasadas décadas no se debería desaprovechar. Norman Blake lleva tiempo embarcado en proyectos paralelos a su grupo como Jonny, su alianza con Euros Childs de Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci que a punto estuvieron de visitar Galicia el año pasado. Ahora se alía con el talento de Jad Fair de Half Japanese

con quien ya había colaborado en los últimos discos del mítico grupo escocés. Si la memoria no me falla será la tercera visita de Norman Blake a Galicia. Las dos primeras tuvieron lugar en Santiago de Compostela con su grupo Tenagee Fanclub. Estuvo en aquella edición grandiosa del Santirock en verano del año 2000 y diez años más tarde volvió a la ciudad para tocar en la sala Capitol en diciembre de 2010.Ambas citas quedaron grabadas a fuego en la retina de los que consideran a TFC como uno de sus grupos favoritos. Me imagino que más de un peregrino planeó hacer el Camino de Santiago para llegar con tiempo suficiente para visitar la catedral, recuperarse del esfuerzo con un ligero descanso, una

buena ducha y la mejor gastronomía gallega para después asistir al concierto. Aquello hubiera sido todo un viaje. Ahora unos pocos privilegiados tendrán la oportunidad de verlos en Ourense interpretando temas de cada uno y versiones de Daniel Johnston. Si eres de los que no has conseguido una entrada puedes intentarlo en otras ciudades conectadas con esta revista.

— In just a few hours, sold out for their concert in May 12 in Ourense.

We still had three months before the concert, but when the news broke that Norman Blake and Jad Fair will act together on May 12 at the charming Café Pop Torgal in Ourense, we all knew that tickets would run out in hours. We all set on the starting grid with our hands on the mouses ready to click on the purchase as if we were in the front cover of the "Grand Prix", the fantastic album of Teenage Fanclub, the band led by Norman Blake. The chance of enjoying the union of two of the great geniuses of indie pop of the past decades should not be missed. Norman Blake is embarked on side projects like Jonny, his alliance with Euros Childs of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, who were about to visit Galicia last year. Now he forms an alliance with the talent of Jad Fair of Half Japanese with who he had collaborated in the last albums of the legendary Scottish group. If my memory serves me right, this will be the third visit of Norman Blake to Galicia. The first two took place in Santiago de Compostela with his band Tenagee Fanclub. He took part of that great edition of Santirock in the summer of 2000, and ten years later he returned

to town to give a concert at the Capitol in December 2010. Both concerts are engraved in the retinas of those who consider TFC as one of his favorite bands. I guess that more than one pilgrim planned to walk the Way of St. James and arrive with enough time to visit the cathedral, recover from the effort with a slight break, a good shower and the best Galician cuisine and then attend the concert. That would have been quite a good journey. Now a few privileged will have the chance to see them in Ourense, each one playing their own songs and versions of Daniel Johnston. If you are one of those who has not a ticket, you can try in other cities connected with this magazine.

L.E.V. FESTIVAL 2012

— El mejor festival de música electrónica de la península, posiblemente.

L.E.V. FESTIVAL 2012

Aunque ya está bien asentado en el podium de los festivales de música electrónica en España, el Laboratorio de Electrónica Visual o L.E.V. con el patrocinio de SON Estrella Galicia, se supera un poco más en cada edición. Poco importa que la crisis económica obligue a una drástica reducción de los presupuestos culturales de las entidades públicas y privadas o que la comunidad autónoma y la alcaldía cambiasen de color político. El colectivo asturiano Datatrón 0×3F lleva desde 2007 trayendo a Gijón las creaciones más interesantes de artistas locales e internacionales dentro de la música electrónica y de las artes visuales. Los organizadores han conseguido, en un año tan difícil como éste, mantener el apoyo institucional y privado para celebrar la sexta 12

edición de un festival cuyas siglas rinden homenaje a Lev Thermen, un científico ruso reconocido como padre de los sintetizadores modernos. El cartel de 2012 se cerró a mediados de marzo con un line-up difícil de superar. Destacamos la genialidad del norteamericano Prefuse 73, abanderado del prestigioso sello Warp, que nos ofrecerá un live irrepetible con lo mejor de su trayectoria y Ghostpoet, la última sensación del hip hop británico. Tampoco debes perderte al finlandés Mika Vainio; el regreso al festival de Olaf Bender esta vez con su proyecto Byetone; un directo como el de Various Production con dos vocalistas y un artista visual; la melancolía juvenil de la voz de Anja Plaschg al frente de Soap&Skin; el futurista IDM de Kuedo, una de las sorpresas de

2011; la atmósfera del británico Holy Other; el oficio de Robert Lippok otro de los nombres fuertes del sello Raster-Noton; las composiciones del sevillano Arbol de su aclamado último disco “She read the wrong book”; el underground alemán de Anstam y el universo visual del artista japonés Ryoichi Kurokawa. Completan el cartel: Old Apparatus, Fasenuova, patten, Komatsu, MFO, 1024 Architecture, Vittus + Paul Prudence y las bandas españolas Las CasiCasiotone y Normaa. Por último, no debemos olvidarnos de las actividades paralelas como workshops, concursos, exposiciones e instalaciones colectivas que llenaran los diferentes espacios de la Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura de Gijón durante los días 27 y 28 de Abril.

PEGASVS, DÚO MITOLÓGICO PEGASVS, MYTHOLOGICAL DUO

Un día cualquiera, mientras te tomas una caña en un bar escuchas a unos chicos nombrar a Pegasvs. Les miras y te imaginas que será el personaje de algún videojuego, el último viral de internet o incluso el título de una saga de novelas de origen mitológico. Entonces suena una canción y uno de los adolescentes dice: “son éstos”. La melodía y esa voz susurrante e hipnótica del estribillo me dejan con ganas de más pero al mismo tiempo me suenan a algo ya escuchado. Apuro la cerveza y en casa me pongo a darle vueltas a la cabeza mientras preparo la cena. Peleándome con un cuchillo viejo encuentro la conexión: aquella canción era “La melodía del afilador” y en su momento me hizo pensar en que nadie había usado esas notas en una canción. El oficio de afilador trashumante pasó de 14

padres a hijos pero el progreso le ha degollado por mucha audiencia que tengan los programas de cocina. Para los nostálgicos aún quedan pequeñas ciudades que conservan al afilador de cuchillos motorizado. Aquella fue la primera canción de Pegasvs, dueto formado por Sergio Pérez García y Luciana della Villa, pareja de asturiano y argentina residentes en Barcelona. Era otoño de 2010 y nadie hablaba en los bares de su grupo de música pero ellos no eran desconocidos. Él formó parte de The Sad Believers y suele acompañar a Joe Crepúsculo en sus giras, ella era una de las componentes de Sibyl Vane pero además compartieron grupo en Thelemáticos, Anticonceptivas antes de Amore, su anterior proyecto conjunto. Ahora todos les conocen. Este caballo ganador agita sus alas al ritmo de krautrock con aires de pop

retro-futurista en su debut homónimo que suena a Neu!, Can y Broadcast pero también a unos Triángulo de Amor Bizarro bien domesticados. El tiempo dirá si la pareja continúa o alguien le corta las alas al mito. Por ahora, escúchenlos, bailen y disfruten. No hace falta que alcen la vista hacia las estrellas para verlos, estarán en todos los sitios porque son el grupo del momento. — We show you the winning horse

One day, while having a beer in a bar, you hear some guys mentioning the name Pegasvs. You look at them and imagine that it must be the character of a videogame, the latest viral on the internet or even the title of a series of novels of mythological origin. Then, a song starts sounding and one of the teenagers says, "here they are". The melody and the hypnotic and whispering voice of the chorus make me want more but at the same time they seem to be similar to something I have already heard. I finish my beer and, once at home, I cannot stop cogitating while preparing dinner. Struggling with an old knife I find the connection: that song was "The melody of the knife grinder" and at that moment it made me think that no one had used those notes in a song before. The job of nomadic knife grinder passed from father to son but progress has slit his throat, no matter the audience of cooking shows. For the nostalgics, there are small towns which still preserve the motorized knife grinder. . That was the first song by Pegasvs, duet formed by Sergio Perez Garcia and Luciana della Villa, an Argentinean and Asturian couple living in Barcelona. It was the autumn of 2010 and no one spoke about their band in the bars, but they were not unknown. He was

part of The Sad Believers and quite often accompanies Joe Crepúsculo on his tours; she was one of the components of Sibyl Vane but they also shared a band in Thelemáticos, Anticonceptivas ante de Amore, their former joint project. Today, everybody knows them. This winning horse shakes its wings to the rhythm of krautrock with an air of retro-futuristic pop in his self-titled debut that sounds like Neu!, Can and Broadcast but also like a kind of well-domesticated Triángulo de Amor Bizarro. Time will tell if the couple continues together or if someone cuts the wings of the myth. For now, listen to them, dance and enjoy. No need to raise your eyes to the stars to see them, they will be everywhere because they are the band of the moment. El verano es la época indiscutible de las actuaciones en directo en la mayoría de nuestras ciudades, que viven auténticas peregrinaciones en busca de los mejores conciertos. Más allá de los grandes festivales, en Más Galicia no perdemos de vista este particular evento, que cada año ofrece varias jornadas de música independiente, en un entorno totalmente espectacular: la península de la Magdalena en Santander. Una ubicación totalmente de lujo rodeado de las playas más exquisitas de la ciudad.

Summer is the undeniable moment of live performances in most of our cities, living authentic pilgrimages in search of the best concerts. Beyond big festivals, in Más Galicia we do not lose sight of this particular event, every year offering several days of independent music in an exceptional environment: Peninsula de la Magdalena in Santander. A totally spectacular location surrounded by the finest beaches in the city. Santander Music will have its fourth edition next August. A Festival we follow every year, very closely, and this year it has changed its dates from late July to the 3rd and 4th August. Not all the artist have been confirmed but Santander Music has just announced two more stars in its head line, led by theNew Yorker band Chk Chk Chk. A key band in the punk dance sound that will lead the international proposal of Santander International Music 2012. Together with Chk Chk Chk, one of the most reputed national Indie bands, La Casa Azul, will join the festival. The band has enjoyed great success with their latest album, "La Polinesia Meridional," released in November 2011 and with the particular sound of the label Elefant, which is editing them again. Both bands perfectly integrate a headline formed by the characteristic alternative sound of the Irish Delorentos, along with several of the key bands of the national independent scene, the Grenadian Lori Meyers, the rock sound of Sidonie, Love of Lesbian or the irreverence of the swine The Zombie Kids. Santander Music celebrará su cuarta edición el próximo mes de agosto. Un Festival que seguimos muy de cerca y que este año ha cambiado sus fechas desde finales de julio, a los días 3 y 4 de agosto. A falta de confirmar la totalidad de sus actuaciones, Santander Music acaba de confirmar dos nuevos tantos para su cartel encabezados por la formación neoyorkina Chk Chk Chk. Una banda clave en el sonido dance punk que liderará la propuesta internacional de Santander Music 2012. Junto a Chk Chk Chk, también se unen al Festival uno de los proyectos más reputados del Indie patrio, La Casa Azul. La banda ha cosechado un gran éxito con su último álbum, “La Polinesia Meridional”, lanzado en noviembre de 2011 y con el particular sonido del sello Elefant, que vuelve a editarlos. — Después de liderar a una generación con The Jam y The Style Council, el undécimo álbum de Paul Weller en solitario sigue la senda de la experimentación reciente.

La bomba saltaba en todos los medios especializados a principios del mes de marzo: Bon Iver acababan de anunciar dos fechas en nuestro país y los días 22 y 27 de julio darían sendos conciertos en los elegantes y apropiados Palacio Euskalduna de Bilbao y Poble Espanyol de Barcelona respectivamente. Pocas excusas tienen peso ante la asistencia a estos conciertos, pocos eventos se antojan tan especiales y pocas pegas se les van a poder poner. Por ello, reservar el día para uno u otro es un obligado ejercicio de absorción cultural y agradecimiento a la vida por ofrecernos de vez en cuando tan preciados regalos. No digamos que no.

LA MALETA MEXICANA THE MEXICAN SUITCASE

— La historia de tres cajas que fueron encontradas en un apartamento de la Ciudad de México en 2007.

Siempre es difícil documentar la historia, y más cuando hay conflictos bélicos que dividen a generaciones. España siempre ha tenido problemas para ser objetiva y mirar atrás sin rencor ni reproche, tanto le ha pasado cuando se remonta siglos atrás como cuando toca hablar del doloroso siglo XX y la guerra civil. A diferencia de la sociedad americana que ahonda en sus heridas y sus guerras, Secesión, Corea, Guerras mundiales o Vietnam, buscando respuestas y viendo los hechos con perspectiva. A España le cuesta navegar en su historia sin miedo al naufragio. Por eso en ocasiones el resultado es mejor cuando es alguien ajeno quien se acerca. Este es el caso del segundo trabajo de la fotógrafa y documentalista Trisha ZiffL que aprovechando el relato del descubrimiento de una serie de negativos perdidos, muestra los estragos que provocó en España su guerra civil. El film llamado “La Maleta Mexicana” narra la historia de tres cajas que fueron encontradas en un apartamento de la Ciudad de México en 2007, tras haber desaparecido en medio del caos que reinaba en Europa a comienzos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Esta “maleta” contenía 4.500 negativos fruto del trabajo de tres amigos que se conocieron en París entre 1936 y 1937 y que fotografiaron muchos de los terribles eventos de su tiempo. Exiliados de sus propios países: Alemania, Polonia y Hungría, fueron testigos de los avances del fascismo en Europa y llegaron a España para combatirlo con sus cámaras. Sus nombres eran Robert Capa, David 'Chim' Seymour y Gerda Taro. Cuando a finales de diciembre de 2007, tras un largo y misterioso viaje, llegaron al International Center of Photography tres cajitas de cartón, nadie podía imaginar su contenido: “los míticos negativos de Robert Capa sobre la Guerra Civil española”. Durante años corrieron rumores sobre su supervivencia, desaparecidos del estudio de Capa en París al comienzo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero que hasta casi 70 años después no mostraban sus secretos: 126 rollos, no sólo de Robert Capa, sino de Gerda Taro y David Seymour (“Chim”), tres de los principales fotógrafos de la Guerra Civil española. El conjunto es un documento de valor incalculable sobre la evolución de la fotografía

y el fotoperiodismo bélico, pero también sobre la historia española y la expansión del fascismo en el mundo. Ziff consigue cierto equilibrio al narrar la importancia de las fotografías como documento de lo sucedido, vinculando la relación-historia personal de los tres fotógrafos, el impacto de su trabajo en la repercusión internacional del conflicto y la historia del mismo a través de historiadores, supervivientes y exiliados. Al tiempo es una reivindicación de la fotografía como testigo singular, como medio de captar sensaciones y sentimientos, de reproducir instantes, ambientes, que ninguna de las películas rodadas en nuestro país ha logrado para mostrar todo el dolor, miseria y rabia que muchas de ellas reflejan. Lo importante para estos fotógrafos era estar allí, transmitir lo que ocurría, impactar, no interpretar, ni pensar en las consecuencias, ni en la estética. Por eso hoy, no sólo están en libros de fotografía sino también en los de historia.

It is always difficult to document history, especially taking into consideration conflicts that have divided generations. Spain has always had trouble being objective and looking back without anger or reproach, in past centuries as well as in the painful XX century and the Civil War. Unlike the American society, which deepens into their wounds and their wars, Civil War, Korea, World Wars or Vietnam, looking for answers and looking at the facts with perspective. Spain finds it difficult to navigate in its history without shipwrecking. So sometimes the result is better when it's some foreigner who approuches it . This is the case of the second work of the photographer and filmmaker Trisha ZiffL who with base on the story of the discovery of a series of lost negatives, shows the devastation caused by Civil War in Spain. The film called "La maleta mexicana" tells the story of three boxes that were found in an apartment in Mexico City in 2007, after having disappeared in the chaos that reigned in Europe at the beginning of World War II. This "suitcase" contained 4,500 negatives, result of the work of three friends who met in Paris between 1936 and 1937 and photographed many of the terrible events of their time. Exiled from their own countries: Germany, Poland and Hungary, they witnessed the progress of fascism in Europe and came to Spain to fight against it with their cameras. Their names were Robert Capa, David 'Chim' Seymour and Gerda Taro.When in late December 2007, after a long and mysterious journey, three little cardboard boxes arrived at the

International Center of Photography, no one could imagine their contents, "the legendary Robert CapaÂ´s negatives about the Spanish Civil War." For years there were rumors about their survival, after their dissapearance from the study of Capa in Paris at the beginning of World War II, but they did not show their secrets until almost 70 years later: 126 rolls, not only by Robert Capa, but also by Gerda Taro and David Seymour ("Chim"), three of the main photographers of the Spanish Civil War. The collection is an invaluable document about the evolution of photography and photojournalism war, but also about Spanish history and the spread of fascism in the world. Ziff gets some balance when telling the importance of the photographs as a document of what happened, linking the relationship-personal story of the three photographers, the impact of their work in the international repercussions of the conflict and its history through historians, survivors and exiles. It is, at the same time, a recognition of photography as a unique witness, as a means to capture sensations and feelings, to reproduce moments, environments, none of the other films shot in our country has achieved to show all the pain, misery and anger that many of them reflect. The important thing for these photographers was to be there, to transmit what was happening, to cause a profound impact, not interpreting, without even thinking on the consequences neither the aesthetics. DARK SHADOWS

En ocasiones en el cine vemos almas gemelas que con mirarse se entienden y cuya química trasciende, Lauren y Hardy, Lemmon y Matthau, Fred y Ginger, entre otros. En ocasiones esa chispa surge entre actor y director yendo más allá del típico actor fetiche o musa inspirativa. Este es el caso de dos extraños triunfadores, Tim Burton (el rarito de clase) y Johnny Depp (el guapito alternativo), quienes parecen unidos por ese vínculo de los hermanos gemelos. De esta forma cuando a uno le interesa un proyecto, poco tarda el otro en asomar la nariz. Son tantos sus gustos comunes que a veces logran levantar proyectos difícilmente inimaginables si ellos no anduviesen detrás. Cuando Warner Bros adquirió los derechos de una “famosa” serie freak de finales de los 60 llamada “Dark Shadows” sabía que

podría despertar el interés de dos fans muy particulares. El primero en aparecer fue Depp, atraído por ese personaje principal tan de su gusto, Barnabas Collins, un vampiro disoluto, desenfrenado y caído en desgracia. Tras él, llegó Burton, con el ansia de revisitar una trama familiar vampírica terrorífica al más puro estilo Falcon Crest, con reclamaciones de ultratumba, enredos de familia, hombres lobo vengativos, brujas despechadas, mundos paralelos, etc. Toda una tentación. Pero para entender la historia debemos explicarla y todo comienza en el año 1752, cuando la familia Collins llega a Estados Unidos para comenzar una nueva vida.

Barnabas es rico, poderoso y un playboy empedernido... hasta que comete un error, rompe el corazón de Angelique Brouchard. En la casa residen entre otros, el hermano de Elizabeth, Roger Collins, su rebelde hija Carolyn Stoddard y su hermano de 10 años David Collins. El servicio también es de armas tomar y participará activamente en las tramas de la casa. Un “dinastía” en versión Sleepy Hollow, agitado, no escurrido.

Sometimes, we see in the cinema two soul mates who, only by looking at each other, understand them and whose chemistry goes beyond, Lauren and Hardy, Lemmon and Matthau, Fred and Ginger, among others. There are other relatives living in the house, Elizabeth's brother, Roger Collins, her rebellious daughter Carolyn Stoddard and her 10 year-old brother David Collins. EXPECTATIVAS CUMPLIDAS EXPECTATIONS FULFILLED

Expectación. Mucha. Por ver la última propuesta de Calixto Bieito, Desaparecer, en el Teatro La Latina de Madrid. Y no era para menos porque han sido numerosos los motivos causantes de esta sensación. Desaparecer se estrenó el pasado mes de Julio en el Festival Grec de Barcelona y prácticamente desde entonces lleva de gira por los teatros de toda España, con éxito de crítica, con bastante afluencia de público y con lo difíciles que están las cosas hoy en día. En ella, en la obra, Juan Echanove vuelve a llevar el peso, tal y como ya lo hizo en su primera colaboración con Bieito en la adaptación del texto de Houllebeq “Plataforma” y con un resultado espeluznante – en el mejor de los sentidos posibles de la palabra – y yo que fui afortunada espectadora del primer envite, no me quería perder el segundo… Pero además Maika Makovski, nueva musa del underground musical se estrenaba sobre las tablas de un escenario – teatral, obviamente – eso si, armada con un piano y escudada por su voz. Con todos estos ingredientes, ¿cómo no estar expectante? El resultado, el propio título del artículo lo dice, más que satisfactorio. Hora y diez minutos escuchando, viendo, sintiendo las palabras y los textos de Edgar Alan Poe. Recitadas por Echanove en español, cantadas en inglés por la Srta. Makovski.

Hora y diez minutos aplastada en la butaca por el inmenso trabajo de Echanove, que conmueve, asusta, arrastra, desagrada y te transporta a las agobiantes atmósferas presentadas por Poe, con sus increíbles cambios de registro: de la carcajada al llanto, de la frialdad a la más absoluta desesperación y sin ningún tipo de pudor. ¡Qué pedazo de actor! Eso si, ayudado de una más que correcta y fantasmal Maika Makovski toda vestida de blanco, una escenografía sencilla pero efectiva y humo, mucho, mucho, humo. Tanto que en ocasiones apenas se vislumbra el escenario y todo desaparece…

Expectation. A lot. For the latest proposal of Calixto Bieito, Desaparecer, at La Latina Theatre in Madrid. And with good reasons for this sensation. Desaparecer had its premiere last July at the Festival Grec in Barcelona and since then the play has been touring virtually all the theaters in Spain, to critical acclaim, with enough audience and with all the difficulties we are suffering nowadays. An hour and ten minutes crushed in the chair by the immense work of Echanove, who moves, frightens, draws, displeases and takes you to the stifling atmosphere presented by Poe, with his incredible changes: from laughter to tears, from coldness to utter despair and without any shame. What an actor! Certainly, he was helped by a more than correct and ghostly Maika Makovski, dressed all in white, a simple but effective scenery and smoke, much, much, smoke. Hace varios años, el abajo firmante escribió un artículo que comenzaba con este mismo interrogante y que, a propósito de los nuevos vientos, vuelve a recordar con la intención de que no caiga en el olvido… En aquel entonces se hablaba de los hitos metropolitanos que tienen de referencia las principales ciudades, cómo y en qué momento surgieron, las reacciones de la sociedad a lo largo de la historia, la negativa a su desaparición debido a su arraigado asentamiento urbano y social, las recientes y desafortunadas actuaciones o intervenciones que pretenden equipararse a ellos y la evolución más o menos larga en el tiempo que ha conseguido convertirlos en elementos indisolubles e identificativos dentro del tejido metropolitano. Pero en esta ocasión se va un poco más allá… Buscamos un análisis en el

entorno espacial como ámbito próximo de influencia en el que las diversas situaciones se puedan enfocar desde un punto de vista más crítico y analizar el contexto de la existencia ¿Por qué Galicia se sigue relacionando en el campo de la arquitectura con la tradición y la leyenda? En este sentido bien es cierto que en esta tierra no son pocos e importantes los referentes arquitectónicos que funcionan como reclamo turístico o símbolo de alguna ciudad, pero no podemos vivir permanentemente de lo levantado en el pasado: tenemos que apos-

tar por el presente y por el futuro y no permitir que intervenciones mediocres se intenten apropiar de funciones cuyos objetivos distan mucho de la realidad. Parece mentira que en pleno S XXI prácticamente no existan en Galicia referencias relevantes de edificios emblemáticos proyectados por arquitectos de primera línea y las que pudieron serlo se han convertido, por diferentes circunstancias, en un absoluto fracaso. Dejémonos ya de mediocridades y medias tintas y verdaderamente valoremos y aplaudamos las decisiones atrevidas y,

en cierto modo, aseguradas y sigamos las pautas y el camino marcado para llegar a buen término. Y esperemos, por el bien de todos, que la próxima intervención de importancia a realizar en Orense, que cuenta con capacidad suficiente para convertirse en un complejo de referencia, continúe la senda de las grandes actuaciones y quizá sirva de acicate pa-ra, incluso en los tiempos que corren, estimular la conciencia (y los corazones) y animar el espíritu de quien proceda con la intención de imponer los criterios de los auténticos número uno.

We seek an analysis in the spatial environment as close level of influence in which various situations can be approached from a more critical point of view and analyze the context of the existence. Why is Galicia still associated in the field of architecture with tradition and legend? In this sense, it is true that on this land the architectural references that serve as tourist attraction or symbol of a city are not few and important, but we cannot live, permanently, from that

built in the past: we have to bet on the present and the future and not allow that mediocre interventions attempt to appropriate functions whose goals are far from reality. It seems incredible that in the XXI century in Galicia there are practically no relevant references of emblematic buildings designed by top-architects and those which could have been, have became, for different circumstances, an absolute failure. LetÂ´s abandon mediocrity and half-heartedness, we must truly value and applaud the brave and, in some way, insured decisions and follow the guidelines and the road marked to reach a satisfactory outcome. And we hope, for our ownÂ´s sake, that the next major intervention to be built in Orense, which has sufficient capacity to become a reference complex, will follow the path of the great performances and, perhaps, be a spur even in this difficult times, to encourage the awareness (and hearts) and encourage the conscience (and the hearts) and stimulate the spirit of those to whom it may concern in order to impose the criteria of the true numbers one.

CON LA FÁBRICA EN CASA WITH THE FACTORY AT HOME

La industria discográfica con su modelo de negocio basado en grabar y vender discos, se vino abajo con la llegada de los medios digitales. Por un lado la mayoría de los consumidores prefería la descargar de MP3 a la tradicional comprar en tiendas especializadas. Por otro, algunos artistas comenzaron a grabar y producir sus discos por cuenta propia. Algo similar está sucediendo con la industria del diseño, pequeños cambios que poco a poco pueden transformar las bases de un negocio muy asentado. A principios de la pasada década, los FAB LAB (Laboratorios de Fabricación) iniciaron la revolución digital de la fabricación de la mano de Neil Gershenfeld. Su pretensión era favorecer la creatividad de los individuos proporcionándoles herramientas necesarias para la fabricación autónoma. Esta iniciativa ha acercado a los usuarios técnicas que solo estaban al alcance de las grandes compañías, lo

que ha provocando un cambio en la forma de ver la producción a pequeña escala. De los 50 centros que existen en el mundo 4 están en España, y la cifra no para de crecer. Hoy día montar un FAB LAB puede costar entorno a 50.000 €, pero en pocos años podremos fabricar casi cualquier cosa conectando nuestra computadora a un pequeño periférico. Quizá la idea pueda resultar peregrina, pero los avances de los últimos años hacen que algunos hagan declaraciones optimistas, mientras otros se embarcan en ambiciosos proyectos. Los neocelandeses de Ponoko han sabido aprovechar la oportunidad creando una plataforma online que ofrece servicios FAB LAB. Su objetivo es cambiar la forma en la que las cosas se diseñan, se fabrican y se distribuyen. Ésta es su metodología: tú diseñas y seleccionas el material, días después recibes en tu casa tu set de montaje o impresión en 3d.

Además, su tienda online te permite compartir y vender tus propios diseños. Durante el pasado Salón del Mueble de Milán la compañía holandesa Droog se unía a esta revolución con la presentación del proyecto “Design for download”, que estará disponible a finales de este año. La idea es ofrecer al usuario medio la posibilidad de personalizar sus diseños online, para luego descargar instrucciones y planos que posibiliten su fabricación local. Y es que, como ellos mismos apuntan “Cualquiera puede construirlo, en cualquier momento, en cualquier sitio”. ¿Qué resultados tendrán estas iniciativas a medio y largo plazo? Por el momento los interesados en cambiar la forma de concebir el diseño de productos siguen en aumento, y de esta manera el movimiento DIY (Hágalo Usted Mismo) se desprende de la etiqueta contracultura para vestirse de tendencia.

The recording industry with its business model based on recording and selling albums, collapsed with the advent of digital media. On the one hand, most consumers preferred the MP3 download to the traditional shopping in specialized stores. On the other hand, some artists began to record and self-produce their albums. Something similar is happening with the design industry, small changes that can gradually transform the foundations of a well established business. Early in the last decade, the FAB LAB (Fabrication Laboratories) started the digital revolution in the manufacturing hand in hand with Neil Gershenfeld. Their aim was to favor the creativity of individuals by providing them with the necessary tools for the autonomous production. This initiative has brought users closer to some technicals that were only available to big companies, and this has caused a change in the way of looking at small-scale production. Of the 50 centers in the world, 4 are in Spain, and the number is growing. Today, mounting a FAB LAB can cost around 50,000 € , but in few years we could make almost anything connecting our computer to a small peripheral. Perhaps that might be a peculiar idea, but advances in recent years have led some people to make optimistic

statements, while others embark on ambitious projects. New Zealanders from Ponoko have taken advantage of the opportunity to create an online platform that provides FAB LAB. Its aim is to change the way things are designed, manufactured and distributed. This is their methodology: you design and select the material, some days later you receive at home your assembly set or 3D printing. In addition, their online store lets you share and sell your own designs. During the last Milan Furniture Fair, the Dutch company Droog joined this revolution with the introduction of the project "Design for download", which will be available at the end of this year. The idea is to offer the average user the ability to customize their designs online, and then download instructions and plans that enable its local manufacture. CHEMA MADOZ CHEMA MADOZ

La muestra que se presenta en el Auditorio de Santiago de Compostela bajo el sugerente título Ars Combinatoria nos acerca al trabajo de uno de los referentes de la fotografía contemporánea; Chema Madoz. A través de una selección de 70 imágenes recorreremos parte de su extensa producción desde mediados de la década de los 80 hasta la actualidad. Aunque en alguna ocasión ha utilizado el color, todas las imágenes que la integran han sido realizadas en blanco y negro, como la mayor parte de su trabajo. Madoz apunta que este formato es en el que se siente más cómodo porque así aprovecha “la característica principal que tiene la fotografía analógica y que consiste en ser un espejo de la realidad”. En cuanto al método de trabajo, el artista madrileño explica que cuando comenzó a fotografiar objetos pensaba que iba a producir tan sólo una serie de 30 o 40 instantáneas “pero me encontré con un universo muy amplio, al que ahora no le veo límites”. Desde la exposición en el Museo de Bellas Artes de A Coruña en el año 2008, la obra de Madoz no viajaba a nuestras tierras. Así que no se la pierdan porque es una buena oportunidad para sonreír, hacerse preguntas o simplemente admirar la belleza que atesora un objeto de uso cotidiano! Ars Combinatoria podrá visitarse hasta el 24 de Junio.

The exhibition presented in the Auditorium of Santiago de Compostela under the suggestive title of Ars Combinatoria brings us closer to the work of one of the top names in contemporary photography, Chema Madoz. Through a selection of 70 images we travel through part of his extensive production since the mid 80's right up to now. Although he sometimes used colors, all the images that form the exhibition have been made up in black and white, like most of his work. Madoz says that he feels more comfortable in this format because, with it, he takes advantage of "the main feature that has analog photography and that is to be a mirror of reality." As for the method of work, the artist from Madrid explains that when he began photographing objects, he thought he would only produce one series of 30 or 40 snapshots, "but I found a very large universe, and now I see that it has no limits." Since the exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in A Coruña in 2008, Madoz's work did not visit our land. CRÓNICAS DE LA ERA LÍQUIDA CHRONICLES OF THE LIQUID ERA

Cuan fuera de tiempo ha quedado hoy aquella afirmación de Pascal de que todos los problemas del ser humano proceden de no poder permanecer quieto en una habitación, el malestar que Baudelaire denominó "horror al domicilio" y que puso en movimiento a los Livingstone, Scott, o Mungo Park. En la era de la Worl wide Web y la información, de la Modernidad líquida acuñada por el Sociólogo Zygmunt Bauman en la que todo fluye, ya no es un escollo lo de quedarse quieto en un lugar. Es de hecho cada vez más común enclaustrarse en una torre de marfil lejos del mundanal ruido a lo Howard Hughes, hasta extremos como el del fenómeno Hikikimori: término con que se designa a cierta juventud nipona que ha escogido abandonar la vida social, con el ordenador, la televisión y los videojuegos en línea como único contacto con el exterior. Uno puede viajar desde la pantalla en el Google Earth, o vislumbrar otros rincones del orbe desde el Youtube. La crónica periodística, por su parte, acorde a estos nuevos patrones socioeconómicos y la irrupción de Internet ha hecho acopio de nuevas estrategias a la hora de cultivar la crónica de viaje. El escritor Jorge Carrión, ofrece en el volumen "Mejor que ficción" una selección de distintos

autores que evidencia con sus crónicas la variedad de recursos narrativos. Fragmentación, la interdisciplinaridad, sobresaturación de la cultura pop en contraste con la llamada «alta cultura»... son elementos del arsenal de los herederos de Capote y el periodismo gonzo de H. S. Thompson, 21 cronistas de cambio de siglo con los que el lector viajará con nuevos ojos a través de Japón, Haití, la Praga de Kafka versión 2.0, visitando a personajes como un "dealer de información", o el impenitente trotamundos y "conquistador de lo inútil" Werner Herzog.

Tromsø es la capital del Ártico, una ciudad de costa en el norte de Noruega perfecta para emprender la caza de uno de los fenómenos más fascinantes e imprevisibles de la naturaleza: la aurora boreal. Aquí se inicia el último tramo de la ruta seguida por el Expreso del Litoral, una flota de barcos de la compañía Hurtigruten que traslada viajeros, carga y correspondencia desde Bergen en el sur del país hasta Kirkenes, en la frontera con Rusia y Finlandia. La sensación de rozar el final del mundo habitable. Y un deseo implorado en este punto simbólico del globo: ver la aurora antes de regresar. Quizá sea esta noche cuando suceda. Mientras el barco realiza por mar el trayecto entre Kjøllefjord y Mehamn, un pequeño grupo lo haremos por tierra, cruzando en motos de nieve la tundra helada de puerto a puerto, en busca de la esquiva luz del norte. Louro (Muros) — El sol y el viento de la playa de San Francisco con nuestras chanclas alineadas en la roca, atardeceres con las tablas en Ancoradoiro, excursiones en autobús a las Pozas de Ézaro, anocheceres en o Caldeirón y primeras cervezas y confesiones en o Seixo y o Muiño mientras el Monte Louro guardaba todos nuestros secretos. No sé si todo seguirá igual pero sentirme como los Hollister de nuevo me hace sentir mucho + joven. Volveré este verano para comprobarlo desde mi exilio en Avignon.

— Nacida y criada en Londres, pero habitante de La Coruña en estos momentos. Qué es lo que me gusta de aquí y que añoro? Ambas respuestas contienen el elemento de agua. Me gusta… no, me encanta el mar de aquí… salvaje y con un temperamento impredicible, y a la vez, echo de menos mi Támesis, esa franja azul caraterística de los mapas de mi ciudad. Las playas aquí son una maravilla, y brindan múltiples oportunidades para romper con lo cotidiano, tal y como lo hace el Támesis, pero en vez de una cañita en una terraza, con capuccino caliente en mano.

— Pese a la mala fama de la cocina inglesa, el mundo debe agradecerle tres aportaciones de importancia: la salsa Lea&Perrins, el gin&tonic y ese monumento a la carne de buey que llamamos roast-beef.

La nueva etapa de nuestra revista nos ha permitido ‘invadir’ Inglaterra, un país con el que por aquí arriba hemos estado siempre muy relacionados, a veces para bien, como en el caso de sir John Moore, a veces para mal, como en tiempos de sir Francis Drake. Pero es más lo que une a ingleses y a gallegos de lo que nos separa, empezando por el clima y siguiendo por ese peculiar sentido del humor que exhibimos ambos pueblos. Gastronómicamente, los ingleses no tienen muy buena fama. Tópicos, más bien. Hay pubs en Londres donde se come bastante bien, sin contar con algunos restaurantes de muy alto nivel, como los de 68

Blummenthal o Ramsey. De todas formas, para quienes no estén familiarizados con cosas como el steak and kidney pie o empanada de filete y riñones, y para quienes consideren (con razón) que el fish and chips es cualquier cosa menos emocionante, habrá que recordarles las grandes aportaciones inglesas a la gastronomía universal. Son, básicamente, tres, y dos de ellas proceden de la India: la salsa Worcestershire (la clásica Lea&Perrins), el gin&tonic y, ésta tan típicamente británica como la “nurse vesánica” de “La muchacha típica”, de Joan Manuel Serrat, el roastbeef, probablemente la mejor manera que existe de

cocinar un buen lomo de buey. La Inglaterra de los Tudor (Enrique VIII, Isabel I) fue un paraíso par carnívoros. Todavía los guardias de la Torre se llaman beefeaters (comedores de buey). De aquellos tiempos son los prodigiosos asados, como el sirloin, producto de la decisión de Enrique de nombrar caballero (sir) a un espectacular lomo (loin) de buey. Un roast-beef da mucho juego. En caliente, para empezar es precioso el espectáculo al corte, desde el tono marrón de la costra al rojo fuerte del corazón de la pieza; su mejor compañía, un buen puré de patatas, mejor que el tremendo Yorkshire pu-

dding y las insulsa verduras inglesas. Un buen tinto, un gran tinto, es de rigor. Pero queda la segunda vuelta: el roast-beef frío, cortado en lonchas finas, servido con una mostaza de Dijon y otra Colman’s, además de pepinillos y cebollitas en vinagre. Aquí lo que va muy bien es una pinta de Guinness. Nadie debería ir a Inglaterra y regresar sin haber disfrutado de un buen roast-beef: es, qué quieren, un vestigio de la gran época de Shakespeare, y merece un respeto, aunque tampoco tanto que nos impida comérnoslo.

A good red wine, a great red, is a must. But there is a second round: the cold roast beef, thin-sliced, served with a Dijon mustard and other Colman's, plus pickles and pickled onions. Desde que Zooey Deschanel publicó en su canal de youtube la maravillosamente dulce versión de “What are you doing new years eve?” –de Ella Fitzgerald – tocando el ukelele junto a Joseph Gordon-Levitt, cientos de hypsters se han lanzado a las calles buscando el instrumento de sus sueños. Y en Galicia no íbamos a ser menos: La Maravilla Enmascarada (o lo que es lo mismo, Julián Hernández y Rómulo Sanjurjo) han incorporado el ukelele a su sonido. Como casi siempre en cuestiones de “lo último”, nadie ha inventado nada nuevo. Ya en los 50 el Rey (o sea, Elvis) volvió loco a medio orbe cantando sus clásicos al ukelele, e incluso llegó a aparecer con él en más de una de sus curiosas y kitchs películas. Ahora, 60 años después, la moda y las tendencias redescubren este instrumento del que existen más de 10 versiones diferentes –inluyendo, por supuesto, los ukeleles eléctricos-. Toda una tendencia que ha dejado atrás la guitarra, la batería e incluso el saxofón –que fuera instrumento “it” entre los más elegantes-. Eso sí, pese a tener sólo 4 cuerdas, el ukelele no es fácil de dominar. Así que, si desea usted epatar al personal, le recomendamos encarecidamente ensayar previamente. The triumph of "The Artist" made it predictable, and it has finally become a fact: the favourite dance of the American high-class - but actually a discipline born of African and Irish immigrants on the East Coast - has become the latest trend in healthy habits that help to beautify the body, and there is no cool, hypster or trendy who resists a dance that accompanies the movements of the arms with the percussion of the heels and toes of the feet. REFUGIADOS REFUGEES

En estos días, miles de personas abandonan sus hogares en Mali con destino a países fronterizos ante la inseguridad social generada a causa de los enfrentamientos armados entre el movimiento independentista tuareg y el ejército nacional en la región de Azawad, al norte del país. Tras la disputa sobre el territorio histórico subyacen intereses de índole económica por el acceso a materias primas de gran valor presentes en el territorio tales como gas natural, uranio o petróleo. En situación de conflicto armado, la capacidad de respuesta frente la infame sequía que asola la región desde finales de año ha sido insuficiente. Esta circunstancia ha servido de acicate para el comienzo de los desplazamientos masivos. En la vecina Mauritania, los refugiados establecieron, en un primer momento, campamentos improvisados cerca de Nema. La llegada de decenas de miles de personas en la zona, igualmente castigada por la sequía, ha aumentado la presión sobre los recursos locales, ya de por si, escasos. Ante la dimensión del problema, ACNUR y ONG internacionales han comenzado a trasladar a la zona recursos humanos y materiales destinados a garantizar condiciones mínimas de asistencia medica, alimentación, saneamiento y seguridad en la zona. La actual repercusión mediática de estos nuevos campamentos en el Sahel nos confronta a la realidad de otros muchos campos de refugiados anónimos. Lamentablemente, en el mundo, más de treinta millones de personas viven desplazados desde sus regiones de origen devastadas por guerras o desastres naturales.

A veces, pienso que la frialdad de los datos impide comprender el alcance de estas noticias, ejercicio todavía menos agradable en esta época de dificultades más cercanas. En esos momentos, realizo el ejércicio de imaginar salir de mi casa, sin saber cuando ni como regresaré. Únicamente con miedo y con la esperanza de que mi destino sea mejor que lo que dejo atrás. Entonces de doy cuenta de que esto no es una película, sino que otra vez más la realidad supera a la ficción.
