Unofficially dubbed the ‘Manor of Elegance’, the intricate attention-to-detail prevalent in every aspect of this stunning, stately home left our judges completely in awe – cementing its place as the deserving winner of House of the Year.

Set in the Gold Coast hinterland, the owners envisaged a Scottish Manor-style home that would integrate seamlessly on their working cattle property at Beechmont. After a little over two years of planning and construction, this dream was brought to life.

Enter the gates of Richmond Park and be greeted by the imposing sandstone entrance and a sealed bitumen driveway laid with fan-patterned basalt cobblestone and edged with ornamental street lights.

Inspired slate roof tiles are used in the external construction of the home, complemented by copper gutters, downpipes and ridge flashings to create synchronicity with the natural surrounds.

A decadent winch-operated chandelier takes pride of place inside the home. There’s also a timber-panelled dining room, luxurious marble bathrooms, curved architraves on the double-hung windows, and several types of ornate plaster cornices. High-end finishes abound, including Amtico flooring on the lower level, and custom Brintons carpet that was specifically imported from the United Kingdom.

Sandstone walls are a standout feature of the home, not only because of their gorgeous aesthetics – but also due to the level of complexity they added to the build. Sourced from Wagners in Toowoomba, the more than 215 tonnes of sandstone had to be quarried in to the property and hand sorted before laying could even begin.

Another highlight of the home is the curved timber staircase and balustrade custom-carved by Master Craftsman, showcasing exceptional intricacy.

Effortlessly integrating with the gorgeous rural surrounds, the outdoor landscaped area features a heated, glass mosaic-tiled pool, a barbeque pavilion with smoker and fire pit, two hand-carved water fountains, a marble feature statue in the winter garden, elevated sandstone garden beds and sprawling green turf.

The home provides year-round climatic comfort with VRV air-conditioning, two fireplaces comprising rustic wooden doors, and underfloor heating in the bathroom ensuites.

A stand-alone 4G commercial internet system has been installed to alleviate technological limitations in rural areas. The home is also fitted with a lightning protection system and a custom audio-visual system.

QUEENSLAND PROJECT OF THE YEAR

Spanning 34 storeys and boasting almost 60,000m2 of A-grade commercial space and facilities, 180 Brisbane sets the tone for the future of Brisbane’s high-rises.

The environmentally-friendly designed tower 180 by Daisho is a 34-storey building which has 59,100m2 of commercial space, ground floor and podium retail, including a food court, extensive end-of-trip facilities and basement parking.

The tower design features large floor plates, podium levels and side-core configurations to enhance the flexibility of workspace configurations.

The building is Brisbane’s first 6-star Green Star office design V3 GBCA rating and is targeting a 6-star Green Star As built rating 5.5-star NABERS energy rating.

Katrina has worked for Paynter Dixon for the past six years and in this time has become an integral part of the team, as well as becoming the company’s first female project manager.

She gives back to the company and the industry by mentoring building cadets, inspiring and motivating the next generation of construction leaders.

Katrina has worked on a range of high-profile projects across Queensland, notably the Mackay and Northern Beaches Project for the Department of Education and Training, worth $37 million.

Since the Northern Beaches State High School project, she has managed four projects in Rockhampton and Yeppoon.

Katrina would like to influence the next generation in the construction industry, in particular other women coming entering the building industry.

Matthew joined the Hutchinsons team in 2012 and has since delivered quality outcomes with an exceptionally high level of skills.

He has taken on positions such as structural foreman while working as an apprentice when his team has been short-staffed, and successfully completed the project.

Prior to completing his apprenticeship he began the role of contract administrator for the Hutchinsons team in which he works.

He completed his apprenticeship while undertaking the contract administrator role.

As an apprentice in their team Matthew consistently demonstrated his willingness to take responsibility and deliver quality outcomes.

Matthew has worked on projects ranging from $200,000 up to around $40 million.

Logan Steel rose to the challenge of this project, completing it on time despite some of the worst weather conditions Queensland could throw at them.

Sound Stage 9 is now Movie World’s largest sound studio and can accommodate productions from around the globe, including the 2018 Commonwealth Games it will house in the near future. The columns are 27 metres high at the apex, and the truss roof which had to be transported in sections and assembled on site is 7 metres high and weighs 9-tonnes.

The works incorporated 900 metres of catwalk and monorail respectively, and 1.8 kilometres of handrail.

The total time frame for fabrication and erection of the main building was nine weeks.

Rather than giving up on apartments due to the predicted upcoming oversupply, Mosaic Property Group is meeting the market head-on.

Mosaic Property Group took out awards for one of its other properties, Two Roads House in Maleny on the Sunshine Coast, as well.

This breathtaking home won Individual Home Over $2 Million, Best Residential Kitchen and House of the Year in the Sunshine Coast Housing & Construction Awards.

This project was undertaken with Mosaic’s unique approach.

“We control the entire process, from the research, feasibility and due diligence before purchasing a site, all the way through construction to managing an investment, ensuring the client receives the best possible returns and that the property stays in the best possible condition well into the future.”

Mosaic is extending its reach from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast with plans for a $20 million beachside project in Kings Beach, Caloundra.

Ordinary passers-by would be hardpressed believing this beautiful Hamilton home was, up until very recently, an old dilapidated workers’ cottage

The property’s impressive transformation came courtesy of Klinge Constructions and Developments, who’ve been making a habit of producing exceptional results on upmarket renovations right across South-East Queensland.

Builder and Project Estimator Daniel Klinge vividly remembers the challenges the Crosby Road project posed.

“It was quite a contrast — working in an exclusive suburb like Hamilton, but starting off with a derelict three-bedroom house that was home to the local possum population.”

The crumbling back deck, the tight, confined spaces underneath the house, and the sloping block positioned on a narrow cul-de-sac all added to the project’s degree of difficulty.

“It was a lot of hard work,” Daniel said.

“The state of the existing home provided enough of a challenge on its own, but that kept us sharp and really brought out our best.”

In the end the renovation took just under 12 months to complete. And didn’t the time and effort pay dividends.

In July this year the Klinge Constructions team received the Brisbane Master Builders award for Home Renovation/Remodelling Project $576,000 – $1 million category.

The fireplace, feature wine cellar, openplan kitchen with butler’s pantry, the large entertainment deck and the panoramic views of the city are just a few of the stand-out features of the revamped home.

The team lifted the original building and excavated underneath, turning downstairs into a spectacular family living space.

Downstairs features two bedrooms, a separate bathroom, a master bedroom with an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, laundry, rumpus room, entertainment deck, and a double car garage.

Designer Chris Brumby from Big House Little House worked with Klinge Constructions on the project, adding distinct modern touches to a traditional Queenslander aesthetic.

“The focal aspect of the design was to seamlessly bring the indoor and outdoor living areas together, looking out to the panoramic views of the cityscape,” architectural designer Chris Brumby said.

While very proud of the Master Builders award his business has received, Daniel said winning was just reward for the continued hard work and quality craftsmanship of his team.

“If I didn’t have a great team, the business wouldn’t be as successful as it is,” he said.

“This recognition of their work shows that we’re implementing the right procedures within our company, we’re staying true to our high standards and we’re delivering a final product that our clients truly appreciate.”

When Rob Hunter of Hunter Builders set out to build his ideal home, he never thought it would result in winning the 2016 Brisbane Individual Home $451,000 – $550,000 award.

The home for Mr Hunter, his wife and children is called the Hollywood and was built from scratch.

“There was a fair bit of work in the beginning of the project with getting permission from council,” Mr Hunter said.

“The land we bought was basically bush so we had to clear an acre of land before even starting.”

The home has polished concrete floors throughout the entire house except bathrooms, which also posed a challenge.

“We couldn’t find crushed mirror for the polished concrete in Brisbane, so we had to get it from Melbourne, along with the crushed blue glass which we added into the outside alfresco polished floor,” Mr Hunter said.

Other spectacular features include the fireplace set into a wall of hexagonel-shaped imported Italian marble tiles, the spotted gum timber panels in the kitchen, and lava stone

at the front entrance.

“Then rain was an issue as well, but we ended up building a house.”

Between the five bedrooms, there are also three ensuites and a main bathroom.

“My wife and I were sick of the kids always in our bathroom, so we made a separate parents retreat including our own ensuite, and made two of the other bedrooms with ensuites as well for the kids.

“The main bathroom services the office and guest bedroom.”

There is also a self-contained granny flat with its own kitchen, laundry and bathroom.

With Hunter Builders having been operating for about 12 years now, the brand is well established.

“We can guarantee a 12-week build and have a very quick turnaround,” Mr Hunter said.

“Looking ahead, we would like to be more involved in building townhouses now.”

Hunter Builders The Hollywood Brisbane

Based in Brightwater, J Co Constructions is only four years old but has already taken out the prestigious Master Builders Sunshine Coast President’s Award two years running.

Owner and founder Joe McGuirk said businesses can’t nominate themselves for this particular award.

“This award is given by the judges from what is considered to be the best value for money, design, attention to detail and quality of workmanship and is selected from all the nominated entries,” Mr McGuirk said.

Mr McGuirk was very proud of the achievement, especially considering J Co Constructions is still a relatively young company — even though Mr McGuirk himself has 10 years’ experience as a carpenter.

“We’ve won two years back-to-back and apparently we’re the first to do it, so I can’t complain about that,” he said.

A client’s designer home also helped J Co Constructions win the Individual Home $251,000 – $350,000 in the 2016 Master Builders Sunshine Coast Housing & Construction Awards.

Called The Emperior, this house is unlike most waterfront homes in Brightwater.

“The client was looking for their forever home, and they also needed a dual-function house as the kids have all moved out,” Mr McGuirk said.

“The main living and master bedroom are downstairs, and the upstairs has the other bedrooms and retreat for privacy for the kids when they come to stay.”

Since J Co Constructions offer design and construct services for all their homes, this house provided a slight challenge.

“We designed the home around the two courtyards that provide natural light into the home as well as a tropical feel for the master bedroom,” Mr McGuirk said.

Director Brad McLachlan received two awards at the Master Builders Brisbane Housing & Construction Awards, with the third received on the Sunshine Coast.

McLachlan Homes took out Best Display Home over $501,000 (The Bondi, Sunshine Coast), Best Display Home over $501,000 (The Rosewood, Brisbane) and Best Display Home $351,000 to $400,000 (The Cashmere, Brisbane).

After a brief expansion into the Gold Coast, Mr McLachlan said he enjoyed building and being based in the Moreton Bay region for two decades.

“We like living in the shire, we just love what this shire has to offer and that’s why we base ourselves mainly from the Gateway Bridge north to Noosa,” he said.

Mr McLachlan said it was exciting to witness the developments in North Harbour, Newport, Caboolture West and along Caboolture River Road, as well as other projects south of Caloundra.

“I started out 20 years ago and I did my time starting the company here and I think now and in the next 10 years we’ll see a lot of growth,” he said.

The business took out the 2016 Gold Coast Housing & Construction Awards Best Display Home $351,000 –$400,000 with their beautiful Kirra 303 Urban Façade residence.

Director and builder Nathan Dunn said as per Stroud Homes’ unique approach to projects, the design was born out of customer feedback and demand for an innovative family two storey design. “I believe we have achieved this and surpassed our wildest expectations,” Mr Dunn said.

“The home was built in 18 weeks and is the flagship two storey design for our business.”

Kirra 303 Urban Façade is a four-bedroom home but can become a five-bedroom by utilising the media room with adjacent bathroom.

The home features a wide formal foyer with feature tiled floor and coffered ceiling, which opens out into an open, relaxed living space and kitchen.

The kitchen is perfect for entertaining a large family and includes an expansive butler’s pantry with adjoining laundry.

Upstairs is the master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, as well as three other bedrooms all with built-ins.

“As a key part of the $75 million redevelopment at the hospital, the project provides a new 116 bed private room wing,” Mr Hawkins said.

“This extension also incorporates a state-of-the-art Gold Coast Neurosciences Unit, a new cancer unit, new operating theatres, a neuro-vascular hybrid theatre and a brand new commercial kitchen for the facility.”

The neuro-vascular hybrid theatre is only the second of its kind in the world.

“It was remotely inspected by over 1500 delegates at the World International Neuroradiology Convention in 2015,” Mr Hawkins said.

“The additional wing enhances Pindara Private Hospital’s capacity to 335 beds, making it the largest and most comprehensive private hospital on the Gold Coast.”

ADCO Constructions was able to proudly present the completed health project on-time, with zero defects, and with very minimal disruption to the ongoing medical care at the hospital.

With over 20 years’ experience in the industry, it’s no wonder Clarke’s Design and Construct took out the Commercial Building up to $5 million category.

The Buildsafe project aimed to combine a warehouse with an office for administration and sales staff.

The team at Clarke’s took the block of land and designed the development for the client in line with their brief, and about halfway through the construction the client wanted to upgrade the level of finishes within the office.

This direction established the modern yet still raw industrialised, commercial building that has impressed clients and professionals alike.

Owner and operator of Clarke’s Design and Construct Andrew Clarke has personally been building for over 20 years, but established the business in 2004.

“In the early days business was flourishing until the GFC took hold and slowed the industrial and commercial market,” Andrew said.

“We wanted to make sure we were ready when business came back on the boil, so we have been developing our company to provide better service and better quality particularly on larger projects over the past few years.”

Clarke’s likes to think of itself as a one-stop shop — they incorporate everything in-house for ease of access to their clients.

This includes in-house draftsmen, designers, landscapers, carpenters, plumbers, roofers, fabricators and more.

They’re able to take clients from design to development and building approval through the total construction process to handover and completion.

“We use very few sub-contractors these days as we have approximately 20 to 25 staff,” Andrew said.

“One of our points of difference is that we do all of our own steel fabricating so we can deliver our own structural steel promptly with a high level of accuracy.” Andrew said the majority of their business today is gained through word-ofmouth and referral.

“I’m very proud of the service and quality we provide, the team we have and the care we take in our work,” Andrew said.

“It’s great to see the way the business has developed and grown, from the oneman band of myself in the mid 2000s to the 20-plus staff we have today.”

Clarke’s Design & Construct Buildsafe Gold Coast

Family-owned Corella Constructions’ mammoth renovation project has won them the 2016 Brisbane Home Renovation/Remodelling over $1 million and Best Residential Swimming Pool awards.

Co-owner Ella Brown said the project, entitled Bardon House, involved the renovation and extension of a pre-1946 Bardon Queenslander.

“It took a fairly old and dated house and transformed it into a modern contemporary family home with all the trimmings,” Mrs Brown said.

“We started out by lifting, relocating and re-stumping the old house.

“From there we built in underneath, extended the existing level of the house and built a third level on the top to take in the beautiful view across Brisbane.”

Some features of the house include home automation, decorative mosaic tiling in the bathroom, fully tiled pool with a large glass viewing window and an elevator.

“The integration of the lift shaft centrally located in the house was a different

addition to this project,” Mrs Brown said.

“The owners wanted to expose the interior of the lift shaft and show the mechanics of it all.

“To finish the interior off cleanly, custom glass viewing windows were made and the interior was tiled with subway tiles.”

The finished home is awe-inspiring, with every aspect speaking of luxury — such as the wine cellar which can hold about 300 bottles on the upper shelves alone.

Mrs Brown said while the home was a challenge, Corella Constructions enjoyed it. “We love the homes in the inner city region and particularly the challenges posed by the fact that they can’t be demolished,” she said.

“Everyone has different styles. It’s great being able to work with clients to bring their dreams to reality whilst also working with the challenges of the old building and structure.”

Nadine Czerner is an impressive woman.

Winning this year’s Brisbane Women in Building award, Mrs Czerner knows how to use her passions to make a successful career.

The journey started in 1993, when Mrs Czerner decided her chosen university course was not for her.

“My brother was a leading hand on some townhouses in Red Hill and there was a renderer there who needed someone to mix his mud for a large rendering project,” she said.

“So for six weeks I mixed mud and perched with ‘the boys’ on my esky for smoko.

“I had a great time and after that job I went on with the same tradesman to work on various jobs such as small slabs, brick walls, block walls, formwork, and repairs to concrete.”

Mrs Czerner worked on sites, hands-on for over a year full-time and learnt many of the basics of building.

Now, after over 20 years in the industry, she holds a Medium Rise Builders licence, has vast experience in the many aspects of building, and is co-owner and Managing Director of My Repairbuild.

“My job is to make sure that all of my staff are servicing our clients how they expect to be serviced, maintain quality, safety and a general high standard of service all round,” Mrs Czerner said.

“And of course I need to keep an eye on the accounts and make sure the business is achieving the monetary targets required to stay in business and make a profit.”

Mrs Czerner attributes some of her success in a maledominated industry to the fact she has never used her gender to gain something or as an excuse.

“I would say I earnt respect from my male peers by working just as hard as them if not harder,” she said.
