AfewofthegreatestobstaclesBox&Cohad toovercomeincludedmuchhigher groundwaterlevelsthaninitiallyindicated, rottedtimberpostswhich requirednewsteel columnextensionsandbrickpierswhich requiredadditionaltemporaryworksafterthey werefoundtobehollow.

Ifthosechallengesaloneweren’tenough,it wasalsolaterdiscoveredtheexistingsewer drainhadsunkinthewetconditionsand neededtobe replaced.

Foraddeddifficulty,thedrainwaslocated underneaththe rootsofprotectedfigtrees requiringvaccumexcavationstoensurethere wasnodamagetothetrees.

Alongwiththedifficultjobofstabilisingthe structureandensuringitssafety,Box&Co constructednewexternalstairs,tiersand balustrades,linedthegrandstandceilingwith hardwoodtimber,installednewbenchseating, newinternaldressing roomsand regradedthe externalsurroundingarea.

Whilestructurallythetaskwasimmense, architecturallythechallengewasjustasdifficult.

Allworkcarriedouthadto remain sympathetictothebuilding’soriginal architectureandheritagefeatures.

Newmasonrywascarefullyselectedto ensureitmatchedtheexistingheritagepattern andnewfeaturesincludingthetimber-lined grandstandceilingandbutterflystairswere craftedtocomplementtheoriginalarchitecture.

Allcanagree rescuingthismuch-loved Brisbaneiconwasincrediblychallengingand involvedhowever,forasliceofhistorywhich waswell-worthpreserving,Box&Cocanstand proudknowingtheyhavecreateda beautifully-revivedbuildingthatwill remainpart ofBrisbane’sheritagefabricformanyyearsto come.
