Housing & Construction Awards celebrate 30th year
THE Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards have been recognised as one of Queensland’s most prestigious and longest-running industry events since 1987 when the inaugural ceremony was held.
Initially known as the Housing Awards Competition, it was expanded in 1988 to encompass the residential housing and commercial industrial fields, and became what we now know as the Housing & Construction Awards. The new program was run in conjunction with the Housing and Construction Conference ’88, which was part of Brisbane’s Expo ’88 program. It wasn’t until 1993 that entries from regional Queensland were encouraged and the first Master Builders Regional Housing & Construction Awards were launched. The Gold Coast ceremony was much smaller than those held today, with only a handful of categories being awarded. Today there are more than 50 categories under the banners of

Redefining luxurious and opulent living
REPRESENTING the dawn of a new era is prestige properties, the 2017 Gold Coast House of the Year is the structural epitome of opulence and grandeur.
The Lighthouse, constructed by Alan L Marks Building Services, sets a new benchmark for quality construction and ground-breaking home designs, living up to its name in the most stunning architectural fashion.
When it comes to this home’s notable features, it is a matter of simply not knowing where to start.
From the moment you set foot through the doors this home’s class and splendour is instantly evident thanks to the Georgian-inspired balustrade and curved staircase.
Under the ground floor sits a 14-car basement with boys’ retreat, temperature controlled wine cellar, handbag room, and state-of-the-art gym.
a guest suite with travel inspired wallpaper, a stunning, cocoon-like coffee lounge, enviable library, bar, multiple sitting rooms, dining areas, classically-styled kitchen and a butlers’ pantry.
The first floor boasts the cleverly-appointed master bedroom which is a haven for relaxation and escaping the everyday. This floor also features a boudoir and a bath with Broadwater views, study and sitting room, second and third ensuited bedrooms, laundry and gift-wrapping cupboard.
For year-round entertainment, the second floor has all bases covered.
From an outdoor kitchen, teppanyaki station, theatre lounge through to an indoor bar, banquet dining space, separate ladies and men’s bathrooms which most notably features the homes “view-rinal”, which has uninterrupted
entertaining to the highest of heights.
This level is also home to the stunning rooftop pool leading up to the 10 person jacuzzi spa and sunbathing area.
Taking 18 months to complete, this home was one of the more unique projects undertaken by Alan L Marks Building Services however, is the kind of build the company feels right at home completing.
“We focus on prestige projects for clients with high expectations,” Ben Marks of Alan L Mark Building Services said.
“Working closely with the clients allows us to build unique projects, some larger in size and some smaller than this house however, they all get the same attention to detail.”
A small family company with a close-knit group of subcontractors, the team takes
immense pride in their work and this is evident through the time invested by each and every member of the team to ensure the clients were completely satisfied.
“A build of this size is more like a block of units than it is a regular house, the structural component of this build heavily reflects that,” Mr Marks said.
“There were many meetings with our clients, Barry and Karen, to establish the desired finishes in the house.
“Planning and communication are key elements in achieving the desired outcome.
“We worked closely with Barry and Karen to bring their concept to reality.
“Having the right people on our team makes detailed work easier, as each trade impacts on every other trade.
“Without the skilled tradespeople on our team a project of this calibre wouldn’t have been possible.”
The Lighthouse is a home which truly needs to be seen to be appreciated and is structural proof that with an experienced and well-regarded construction team on hand, when it comes to truly spectacular and ground-breaking builds, the sky really is the only limit.
‘‘ HAVING THE RIGHT PEOPLE ON OUR TEAM MAKES DETAILED WORK EASIER, AS EACH TRADE IMPACTS ON EVERY OTHER TRADE
Quintessential Queensland living
THE President’s Award provides special recognition for a builder who has completed a home which combines affordability with quality of workmanship and innovation.
With the House of the Year consistently exceeding $1 million and even $2 million, it is important to recognise a home that everyday Queenslanders can aspire to.
In addition to achieving high points against the standard judging criteria, the construction costs of the home which takes out the award must not exceed $475,000.
Winning this year’s President’s Award was Stroud Homes Gold Coast for their functional and striking family home, The Bronte 240.
Capturing the true essence of Queensland family living, The Bronte 240 epitomises all there is to love about Gold Coast life thanks to free-flowing open spaces and a
functional layout.
With a striking Skillion façade, the home packs a punch when it comes to kerb appeal.
Comprising four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a modern kitchen boasting Caesarstone bench tops and a stunning covered alfresco and entertaining area, The Bronte 240 allows laid-back family living in the most quintessential Queensland fashion.
A key focus of Stroud Homes Gold Coast has always been to create memorable and unique homes that have longevity in appeal and The Bronte 240 is indicative of this.
“We have received a great reception from clients with this home,” Stroud Homes Director Nathan Dunn said.
“It just has a very warm and great sense that it feels like home.
“We’re proud to say it’s becoming one of Stroud Homes’ biggest sellers.
“The proof is right there, people love it!”
While the win was a great surprise for the team who has only been in operation for three-and-a-half years, expansion plans are in the pipeline which are sure to see Stroud Homes Gold Coast continue to grow and flourish over the coming years.
“We are already in the early stages of opening another office in Burleigh.
“We plan to focus more on our Gold Coast south clients and service the need there.
“We believe in small local teams focused on
local clientele.
“Across the board this approach improves systems, team culture and our customer service experience.”
‘‘ “IT JUST HAS A VERY WARM AND GREAT SENSE THAT IT FEELS LIKE HOME. WE’RE PROUD TO SAY IT’S BECOMING ONE OF STROUD HOMES’ BIGGEST SELLERS.
MAJOR AWARDS:PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Taking fresh food to new heights
WITH a construction portfolio spanning aged care, retail, aviation and education, just to name a few, and annual revenues in excess of $1billion, it isn’t any wonder global investment group QIC contracted ADCO Constructions to complete the Robina retail marvel ‘The Kitchens’.
Described by creative director of Landini Associates, Mark Landini as “a place full of retailers that make and manufacturers that sell”, to say ‘The Kitchens’ has redefined the food and retail scene on The Gold Coast is an understatement.
Awarded the Project of the Year title at the 2017 Gold Coast Housing & Construction Awards, ‘The Kitchens’ houses 45 food retail outlets comprising state-of-the-art utilities. With a brief to reinvent fresh food in Australia, ADCO was tasked with the challenge
of completing a project that was to be innovative and one-of-a-kind, whilst stylistically unpretentious and overwhelmingly real.
While the size and scale of the project in itself is impressive, the aesthetics of ‘The Kitchens’ were paramount.
ADCO Constructions came up against some
challenges architecturally due to the combination of curved geometry and raw finishes to concrete and steel elements however, calling on their extensive knowledge and expertise in the field, managed to navigate the challenges and deliver the client’s desired outcome.
A project of this magnitude required precise planning and faultless organisation, an area in which ADCO well-and-truly rose to the
While there were numerous achievements of the group throughout the duration of this project, most notable was the construction of a 2000sqm suspended slab over a live Myer loading dock and the construction of yet another suspended slab over the shopping centre’s live and often busy entrance.
ADCO Constructions also had to ensure unimpeded 24-hour, safe access to the site, which was achieved through an eight-stage pedestrian access and hoarding strategy.
The meticulous planning that went into this project is a marvel in itself, with the cohesiveness and wow-factor of the overall space indicative of this.
Offering a place for locals and visitors to enjoy a food and dining experience that is so far from the everyday, boasting a theatrical element and buzzing energy that is impossible not to get caught up in, ADCO Constructions has added an immense amount of pizazz to the Gold Coast’s food-scene through this one-of-a-kind, award-winning project.

Alder Constructions wow judges at awards
Having achieved an approximate business growth of 50 percent over the past few years, it is no surprise the team at Alder Constructions has made a name for themselves as a diverse, genuine and first-class company.
Winning the Sporting Facilities category at the 2017 Gold Coast Housing & Construction Awards gifts the company yet another accolade they can add to their already-impressive repertoire.
Carrara Gardens Golf & Tennis Academy was the project which took out the title and showcases the company’s wide-ranging capabilities.
The structure comprises a three-storey building containing two levels of driving range bays, professional golf training studios, gymnasium, conference rooms, a suspended swimming pool and sauna facilities, health bar cafe, Italian clay and hard court tennis courts, putt putt and other outdoor entertainment areas.
Boasting quality finishes and generous open spaces, it’s easy to see why this building wowed the judges.
According to Dean Cheffers, general manager of Alder Constructions, the build was not without its challenges.
"Completing the project’s concrete walls to the standard expected by the architect which was a class one was very challenging," Mr Cheffers said.
"Also, the earthworks component was difficult
given it is a flood prone area."
to be proud of with this project however, for the Alder Constructions team – there are a few notable highlights.
"The industrial high quality finishes set this building off as being very different to any other buildings in South East Queensland.
"The building’s architecture provides for an imposing and iconic building with an abundance of natural light and raw elements such as significant use of off form concrete walls and soffits.
"Contrasting materials, such as mirror finish aluminium composite materials, are then used to provide for an overall striking building.
"The expanse of glass and concrete are strong
project of this scale encompasses however, for the team at Alder Constructions, projects of this magnitude make them feel right at home.
"Alder are known for delivering challenging and complex projects and this one is the size and scope we like to work in.
"The ability to use both our building and civil internal divisions gives our clients the opportunity to have a one stop shop where we save time and cost in projects of this size."
With an unwavering commitment to best practice and client relationships, it seems Alder Constructions’ ethos of being "innovative, genuine and diverse" offers the perfect combination for business success.
Client relationship at heart of success
Entrusting a builder to bring your dream home to life is a decision no owner makes lightly.
From the initial meeting through to hand-over day, a respectful owner-builder relationship is imperative to a successful build.
Thankfully for all clients of 4C Construction, General Manager Claus Sievers understands this element of business better than most.
4C Construction took out the winning title in the Individual Home $1.26 – 2 million category at this year’s awards and while the winning structure itself is incredibly impressive, it is the client relationship in which he holds the most pride.
"The owners are such an amazing couple," Mr Seivers said.
"Their tireless input into every facet of the design and build is what has made it such a lovely home.
"It’s a reflection of them as people.
"We have enjoyed the time we have been able to spend with them immensely."
The stunning Hamptons style home located at Reedy Creek offers the perfect balance between luxury and liveability.
Natural view corridors, an open-plan living, kitchen and dining, full-width picture windows and an absolutely breathtaking deck and suspended pool which overlooks the entire Gold Coast combine to make this home not only award-winning but awe inspiring.
"You feel something good as soon as you
walk up the path towards this home," Mr Seivers said.
"It’s a beautiful home, and it has a warmth.
"It’s a new home you would actually love to live in.
"It’s also the use of natural products like the timber floors, the stone fireplace and the weather boards - It’s perfect!"
Boasting a business ethos that is as simple as it is successful, Mr Seivers and his team’s commitment to "always do the right thing" seems a winning formula for both 4C Construction and their clients.

Their latest project, Burleigh Lake Retreat, epitomises the ‘labour of love" phrase, with Rick and Marie lucky enough to call the stunning property home.

And while this accolade is one Rick and Marie are gleefully celebrating, they are quick to state
that without the wonderful team they worked with, none of this would have been possible.
“Our draftsman Paul Toulson from Total Vision Design, our awesome team of carpenters Lewy, Reggy, Adam and our apprentice Sam, Dallas Pearson our cabinet maker from East Coast Kitchens, our plumber Owen from Lee Sharp, Ned Clinch at James Hardie,Caesar Stone and New Age Veneers and Emma and Amy from Ideal Electrical Ashmore all helped make our dream a reality.”

Giving an old home a new lease on life is an area of speciality for the team at Waterwood Constructions.
Their amazing transformation of a home in Arundel Hills showcases the company’s commitment to first-class workmanship and high-end finishes.
The Arundell project was entered in the Home Renovation/Remodelling Project up to $275,000 category at this year’s Gold Coast Housing & Construction Awards.
The renovation project was no small task, with Waterwood Homes Director Steve Nicholls and his team contracted to bring a contemporary feel to a home originally built in 1990.

An incredibly bright future
TO BE successful in any line of work there are a few imperative traits an employee must possess.
Firstly, an unwavering thirst for knowledge is a trait which not only helps to broaden one’s skillset but ensures the employee continues to learn and adapt the further they progress in their line of work. Secondly, a tenacious work ethic is an absolute must.
Possessing both of these highly sought after qualities and more is the 2017 Gold Coast Apprentice of the Year, Caleb Sievers.
Having worked for 4C Construction over the entirety of his apprenticeship, Caleb has tackled every element of his carpentry training with enthusiasm and an impeccable attention to detail.
Carpentry skill runs through Caleb’s blood, with both of his grandfathers, Claus Sievers Snr. and Cedric Ollington, and uncle, John Ollington, being his most respected mentors.
Caleb’s grandfathers have instilled in him a love of his trade, a great work ethic, the importance of doing things properly, taking pride in his work, to never, ever be late and to never be to proud to use the dust pan and broom to sweep up.
It is through these sturdy foundations and influences that Caleb has become well-respected in the industry and with an accolade such as the 2017 Apprentice of the Year under his belt, it will be exciting to see what the future holds for this dedicated and driven carpenter.
Make the right choice for the perfect family home
As any builder will tell you, building on a sloping site has its challenges however, if executed well, the rewards are considerable.
With stiff competition at this year’s Gold Coast Housing & Construction Awards, winning the Sloping Site category was never going to be easy, however for the team at Choice Homes it was a challenge they were well equipped and ready for.
Their winning entry, The Collinsville, is a four-bedroom, steel-post home situated on an extremely sloping site.
Showcasing Choice Homes’ passion and ability to build on a client’s supplied block and a home style and specification that more than satisfies their needs, The Collinsville is a testament to the company’s versatility and expertise. According to Choice Homes Director Troy Knight, the project was the result of the company’s high-quality building capabilities and

Inspiring creativity and inspiration
In the 21st century, an office space is so much more than just a place to work in.
Thanks to the competitive nature of today’s industry and the need for businesses to constantly stay ahead of the game, it is imperative that an office space inspires innovation and creativity.
One such office space is the headquarters of Gold Coast Graphic Design business CSQD, which won construction company Goris Co Projects the winning title in the Refurbishment/Renovation up to $2 million category at this year’s Gold Coast Housing & Construction Awards.
With a strict brief to create an office space which reflected the business’ brand ‘bright ideas’ and ensure the area was modern, creative and stylish, Goris Co Projects had to draw on not only their expertise in construction but also their cutting-edge design knowledge.
Completing the project included polished concrete floors throughout, black and white design with joinery, glazing frames and walls, feature brick walls which is an innovative 'clip in' system on metal cladding for internal fit outs and a feature green wall.
The final result has helped stamp Goris Co Projects’ mark on the commercial construction scene and according to director Greg Goris, signals the beginning of an exciting few years ahead for this fresh, young company.
"Our 5 year goal is to establish ourselves in the SE Qld market through continuous improvement with how we deliver projects for our clients and our open and honest approach to make it as simple as possible for all involved," Mr Goris said.
"I started this business to offer exceptional service and deliver high quality projects no matter the size or type.
"We work with the clients to achieve their
desired outcome and their budget.
"We also work very closely with quality sub-contractors as we believe they are a reflection of us and can make or break a project."
Given the incredible high quality of Goris Co Projects’ winning refurbishment within the first year of the company’s operation, the future seems incredibly bright for this innovative and boutique construction company.
A custom slice of paradise
Situated at the base of Nobby Beach coastal headland sits the striking and architecturally designed ‘Nobbys Edge’.
Built by Queensland Coast Constructions and entered in the Residential Building (high-rise over 3 storey) up to $20 million category at the 2017 Gold Coast Housing & Construction Awards, ‘Nobby’s Edge’ is one home per floor local masterpiece.
Featuring an impeccable attention to detail and the highest level of finishes, this stunning 5 storey complex demonstrates first hand Queensland Coast Constructions’ commitment to satisfying even the most discerning of clients. All residences in the complex were designed
and decorated to the individual purchaser’s specification and selections.
The external is a clean-cut design and thanks to contrasting colours, a vertical stone-faced feature blade, and a powder coated entry enclosure achieves the perfect balance between demanding attention whilst blending beautiful into the streetscape and surrounds.
With half a decade of experience to his name, Queensland Coast Constructions’ Construction Manager Michel Mouglalis is extremely proud of the standard of workmanship on the ‘Nobbys Edge’ project and feels it demonstrates the company’s dedication to their core principles.
"We pride ourselves on quality constructions
and a deep commitment to exceptional customer care relationships, service and integrity which are the building blocks that have shaped our vision and driven our success."
