Awards steeped in history
FOR more than three decades, Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards have shone a light on the movers and shakers in the industry — those whose innovation, cra smanship and a ention to detail is second to none.
With strict judging criteria and consistently growing entries year on year, a win in the prestigious awards program has become a pinnacle those in the industry aim to achieve.
The first awards ceremony was held in 1987 when at the time the program was known as the Housing Awards Competition. In 1988, it expanded to include residential housing and commercial industrial fields and became known as the Housing & Construction Awards.
The new program was run in conjunction with the Housing and Construction Conference in ’88 which formed part of Brisbane’s Expo ’88 program.
In 1993, the awards were opened to regional Queensland and the first Master Builders Regional Housing & Construction Awards were launched.
The statewide ceremonies have grown from strength to strength over the years, with Brisbane growing from a small ceremony with just a handful of categories to more than 50 award categories including construction, housing, trade contractor/ specialty and individual.
In 2017 we had the honour of adding three new categories to the awards program including Diversity and the Institute of Building Consultants, which joined the ranks of our highly regarded Apprentice of the Year, Women in Building and Rising Star in the Individual category. In the Housing category, we added the Bluescope Best Use of Steel Frame Housing. Visit www.mbqld.com.au for more information.
WHEN I think back over the years of Master Builders Housing & Construction award ceremonies, I see smiling, excited faces, champagne glasses clinking as success and hard work is celebrated.
The steel caps and hi-vis are stowed away, the gala gowns and dinner coats dusted, shoes shined and the daily grind put on hold for a night of celebration. Colleagues, contractors and connections come together as we celebrate those at the forefront of building innovation and quality cra smanship.
Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards cater for entrants ranging from apprentices to trade contractors and small family businesses to the biggest names in the building and construction industry. It is with great honour that I welcome you to the 2018 winners’ magazine.
The calibre of entries into this year’s awards program has been second to none and highlights the exceptional skills and cra smanship of North Queensland’s Master Builders.
Over the past few months, our panel of judges have a ended each entrant’s property and made a thorough assessment against a list of strict criteria. This included quality of workmanship, degree of construction difficulty, external appeal, siting and aspect along with amenities and aesthetics.
The judges then returned to our Townsville headquarters to deliberate. Over a period of painstaking days, they compiled a list of finalists. A er much passionate discussion and sometimes, debate — one winner was selected for each category.
Across the board, the feedback from
our judges has noted the high calibre of entrants in the North Queensland region and I thank those builders for their stellar work in making our judges’ job a difficult one.
Each of our entrants has put their business, product and workmanship under scrutiny as part of an extremely competitive process. Their work, whether a winner this year or not, is a credit to the unwavering quality and cra smanship of a Master Builder.
Since 1882, Master Builders has been the voice of the industry, representing the interests of our members and the broader industry. We are the peak body of practical and relevant information to the industry and consumers. We have helped thousands of builders and trade contractors to operate professional, profitable and viable businesses that deliver superior quality and cra smanship to their customers.
The North Queensland Housing & Construction Awards carry a long and distinguished history of showcasing the absolute best in the industry, and the level of competition among this year’s entrants is unsurpassed.
If you are considering a new build or renovation, please consider this book a showcase of the incredible work that can be achieved when choosing a Master Builder. Get in touch with one of the award-winning builders featured here directly, or utilise our Find a Master Builder search at www.mbqld.com.au. This search will populate a list of properly licensed contractors who match your unique criteria and building needs.
On behalf of Master Builders, thank you for your remarkable work and congratulations on your deserving win. I thank you for supporting the 2018 Housing & Construction Awards program.
House of the Year
DEAN POWELL CONSTRUCTIONSA SIX-BEDROOM, resort-style home has taken out the prestige North Queensland Master Builders House of the Year award.
The winner was announced at The Ville Resort-Casino on Friday, August 24, during this year’s lavish 2018 Housing & Construction Awards ceremony.
The home built by Dean Powell Constructions was a standout due to its exceptional street appeal and contemporary styling.
The owners wanted a resort-style home that made use of innovative, easy-care finishes while taking advantage of the
cooling breezes.
They also wanted a resort-style pool, while the home, which is positioned on a large acreage block, had to suit an urban/ country lifestyle.
Master Builders judge Martin Brooke said the home was a high-quality build that showed a ention to detail.
“It has a really impressive entrance and there was a really seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor areas,” he said.
“I really liked that the outdoor area, while being open, was also sheltered so it was designed for North Queensland weather
conditions. It was definitely liveable and was designed around the needs of the owners.”
Upon entering the home you’re met with the statement foyer which sets the tone of the house.
The home’s huge kitchen has a butler’s pantry and luxurious finishes while the dining and entertaining areas use natural ventilation to cool the home in North Queensland’s hot and humid climate.
The house was also made to be energy efficient through the use of solar power including ba ery storage, solar hot water, roof insulation, large eaves, tinted
windows and louvres which minimise the need for airconditioning and artificial lighting.
The large master bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe while a formal lounge area overlooks the pool and garden to evoke a relaxed feel.
There is also a 150sq m rendered block shed in matching colours and finishes to the house.
Dean Powell Constructions and their team of skilled tradesmen delivered the home on time to create a house that provides comfortable, North Queensland living.
Individual
DEAN POWELL CONSTRUCTIONSACCORDING to Dean Powell, owner of Dean Powell Constructions, winning this year’s Master Builders Award for Individual Home $651,000-$750,000 for a home titled The Resort — which went on to take out the top award of House of the Year — was an unbelievable accolade.
“To win at this level is a real honour.
“The building industry in Townsville has faced a few tough years, so it is a fantastic boost for our company to
receive this honour which acknowledges our quality and expertise, something that potential clients may be looking for,” Dean said.
He said his award-winning house was meticulously planned.
“It was designed with so much thought and effort at every stage and level.
“As with every build I do, it’s all about planning and knowing what’s going to
happen before it happens. This way there are no surprises and you end up with only quality finishes.
“The clients had been planning this for years as it is their forever home. It was fantastic to see their dream become a reality and to have that recognised.”
According to the judges, this is a home that “ticks all the boxes”.
“Boasting six bedrooms and three
bathrooms along with a formal entry, large screened patio and numerous si ing and lounge areas, this is a home you could escape in,” the judges said.
“The quality of finishes on this home and the standard of workmanship was a testament to Dean and his skilled tradesmen and didn’t go unnoticed by the judges.
“Congratulations to Dean Powell on a fantastic home.”
Best Residential Kitchen
DEAN POWELL CONSTRUCTIONSIT seems only fi ing that this year’s winner of the Master Builders Award for House of the Year is also the recipient of the award for Best Residential Kitchen.
According to the judges, the clever incorporation of the vast open plan kitchen — complete with butler’s pantry, large dining and entertaining area — utilises natural ventilation to achieve a comfortable living area perfect for the North Queensland climate.
“I think what sets this kitchen apart is the size, layout and the highest quality materials and fi ings that were used.
“The huge walk-in butler’s pantry is also a unique addition,” said award-winner Dean Powell of Dean Powell Constructions.
“The brief from the clients was to create a large functional kitchen, with plenty of space and storage, great lighting and all the mod cons with a wow factor.
“From tucked-away rubbish bins to
under-bench cupboard space and large drawers, we believe we hit the brief.”
Part of that ‘wow factor’ are the kitchen’s marble benchtops and splashbacks, as well as its gloss doors, so -touch, handleless cupboard doors and soclosing hinges, the multifunctional ovens and the handy servery to the dining room.
“This is both a family kitchen and an entertainer’s kitchen,” Dean said.
“It’s the centrepiece of the home. You can be a part of the action and won’t feel secluded whether you’re preparing the family dinner or entertaining with friends as the kitchen looks over both the family room and outdoor entertainment area and pool.
“With a clever walk-in butler’s pantry you can prep, store and clean up in this private part of the kitchen while the main kitchen always remains spotless and glamorous.”

Project of the Year
HUTCHINSON BUILDERSONE of the most ambitious developments in Townsville in recent times, the $27 million redevelopment of The Ville Resort-Casino has transformed an iconic venue into a vibrant, tropical destination for holiday-makers and locals to enjoy alike.
It was a redevelopment that literally made The Ville the talk of the town, and made Hutchinson Builders the worthy winners of the Master Builders Award for Project of the Year as well as the award for Tourism and Leisure Facilities over $10 million.
“We were so proud to be selected to undertake the redevelopment of The Ville Resort-Casino,” said Pierre Kessler of Hutchinson Builders.
“We were identified as the preferred builder on the basis of our local presence and subcontractor network, combined with our ability to handle the significant scope of the job.”
With works including three new restaurants, a poolside function space for 1,100 people, an infinity edge pool and an elevated deck to connect the
pool and lobby spaces, the project was a monumental undertaking both in size and technical proficiency.
“Significant demolition works of the existing marquee and pool area were required in preparation for the refurbishment,” Pierre said.
“Hutchinson constructed a new function pavilion with all the required building services including full catering kitchen and amenities.
“The refurbishment also included an extension to accommodate a new gym,
as well as the new elevated deck on level three.”
An additional extension was built to accommodate the new Quarterdeck restaurant, terrace and pool deck, and also the cabanas and swim-up pool bar.
Works also included fit-out of the Miss Songs and The Palm House restaurants.
According to the judges, the completed project represents a landmark venue for locals and tourists alike, where guests can enjoy the facility while absorbing the breathtaking views.
Tourism and Leisure
HUTCHINSON BUILDERSPresident’s Award & Individual Home $251,000-$350,000
PRO-VIEW HOMESVALUE for money, practicality and liveability in design are the key criteria for the winning entry of the Master Builders President’s Award.
According to the judges, the recipient of this year’s award has been designed with no wasted space intended.
Also the winner of the Master Builders Award for Individual Home $251,000$350,000, this beautiful house in Burdell consists of four bedrooms, open plan living and separate media room.
The master suite incorporates a walk-in robe leading through into the large ensuite which boasts a freestanding bath in which to unwind a er a long day’s work.
The kitchen design includes a walk-in pantry along with a freestanding oven
for the master chef of the home.
A unique added feature of the home is the incorporation of vinyl planking through the entry and living areas along with stepless flowthrough access to the outdoor patio.
Although the pool was not in the building contract, great consideration and co-ordination was required during the construction due to the proximity of the pool to the foundations.
The judges commented that the house delivers in all areas while still providing a spacious feeling.
“A li le bit of luxury in the family home such as a butler’s pantry and a small bar area in the media room just adds to the home’s many features, all in 228 sqm of space,” the judges said.
WHEN the team at Pro-View Homes met with the clients at the block they had just purchased to build their dream home, it was evident that a ention to detail was going to be vital in the project.
Located on a sloping site, the block also contained a natural valley running through it.
According to the team at Pro-View Homes — winners of this year’s Master Builders Award for Individual Home $551,000-$650,000 — the owners had designed their home to reflect their
lifestyle and to ensure they would capture the natural surrounds as much as possible.
One feature of the home is a large fixed glass window in the living room which spans over three metres.
The home consists of four bedrooms, a master with walk-in-robe and ensuite, a large walk-in-pantry in the kitchen equipped with microwave and dishwasher, a functional laundry with built-in ironing board, two outdoor entertaining areas and a large storeroom.
Trevor Mustey Perpetual Award for Quality Workmanship
REEF COAST CONSTRUCTIONS
ACCORDING to the judges, deciding on a winner for the Trevor Mustey Perpetual Award for Quality Workmanship is one of the toughest decisions they have to make. This year in particular, the judges expressed that the quality of all the entries was extremely high.
“However, it became clear that the workmanship by the team at Reef Coast Constructions was flawless,” the judges said, in choosing this year’s award winner.
“Rob Rule and Cameron McInnes work as a dynamic team, with Rob co-ordinating the projects and Cameron supervising on site.
“This is a very important award for the industry to ensure that quality is still at
the forefront and we congratulate the dynamic duo at Reef Coast Constructions for the utmost care and a ention to detail in their exemplary workmanship.”
For Rob Rule, owner of Reef Coast Constructions, it has always been his mission to deliver the highest quality workmanship possible in his 14 years in business.
“Our uncompromising standard is the cornerstone of our company values,” he said. “On behalf of our clients we will not accept substandard workmanship from any of our team.
“It takes passion, dedication, pride, integrity and honesty to win this award which is why it is so valued by the industry,” Rob said.
“The li le things in building can make a big difference. It all comes down to a ention to detail.
“For example, our homes are fi ed with roller bearing, stainless-steel hinges on all doors, a far be er product for a very small price change compared to a standard zinc-plated door hinge. We install magnetic door catches on all doors instead of cheap nylon catches that require replacement a er a short period.”
According to Rob, winning this award means that his clients have peace of mind and confidence when dealing with Reef Coast Constructions for their project.
“For most clients, their construction project is the largest investment of their life. We want the public to know that
quality workmanship is worth paying for,” Rob said.
“Both Cameron and I are licenced carpenters and licenced builders and have spent many years working on the tools on site physically building our clients’ projects. This practical trade background sets us apart from many competitors.
“Above all else, we pride ourselves on producing quality workmanship in all of our projects, time a er time, whether they be an extension or renovation, first home or forever home.”

Apprentice of the Year — James Barrie
Martin said James had a good a itude on site, was quiet, methodical and grasped the on-the-job component of his trade well.
THAT’S the advice that James Barrie has for anyone keen to win the Master Builders Apprentice of the Year Award, just as James did this year.
In one of the toughest categories of the awards, the 21-year-old was nominated by his employer Martin Locke who is so impressed with James’ work he recently gave James the opportunity to look a er builds in MLH’s Entourage Series as a leading hand under the guidance of Martin’s construction and project managers.
“James actually completed his apprenticeship in April this year, well ahead of his scheduled completion in November,” said multi-award winning builder Martin Locke.
“This was a reward for his application on the job and his dedication to completing his technical studies at Tec-NQ.
“I wanted to nominate him for Master Builders Apprentice of the Year as recognition for his efforts, and I’m thrilled he won. He’s so deserving of this award.”
“Many times during his apprenticeship he would be mistaken as trade qualified due to his abilities and quiet confidence in his application to his work,” he said.
For James, it was only natural that he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a chippie.
“My old boy used to take me out on jobs all the time when I was a kid.
“Some day I’d love to run my own show, that’s one of my dreams. I’ve spoken to my dad about it and we’re both keen to give it a crack and go into business together one day,” James said.
While Martin may be reluctant to let James go some day, he knows that James has what it takes to be his own boss.
“James has a strong will to succeed. I can absolutely see him running his own show in the future.
“I truly value James’ contribution onsite and I’m looking forward to seeing what great things he produces in the coming years.”
“Knuckle down and try your best at everything you do.”
Women in Building — Debbie Jones
WHEN Martin Locke started his own business in 2008, he asked his good friend Debbie Jones to help out with the bookkeeping and paperwork. Ten years later, Debbie is now considered the cornerstone of Martin Locke Homes.
“Debbie is the ultimate dedicated employee who wears multiple hats and gets things done,” Martin said.
“Her role is to oversee company strategies around financial, corporate and legal governance. However on a day-to-day basis, Debbie is the ‘go to’ person for everyone in our team based on her 10 plus years’ experience in the industry within Martin Locke Homes.
“Although Debbie is in a senior management role in the business, she leads by example through her actions of ge ing in and doing what needs to be done regardless of titles.
“The team follows this example and everyone rolls up their sleeves and digs in when Debbie is in the room.”
While Martin describes Debbie as a worthy winner of this award, Debbie takes a much more humble view of things.
“I was definitely surprised when I found out he nominated me. I’m not one for the spotlight, Martin already gives me credit. He’s a great boss, he’s always pa ing me on the
back and lets me know I’m doing a good job. That’s what ma ers.” Debbie said.
For Martin, Debbie is an ‘unsung hero’ of the business, but Debbie says she’s not alone.
“There are a lot of women in the building industry here in Townsville. A lot of trades have their wives or friends doing their bookkeeping and sending out invoices. We’re there in the background helping everything run smoothly.”
Debbie also said there are now more and more women in the forefront of the industry, especially the younger generation who are gaining apprenticeships and a ending education facilities such as Tec-NQ.
“When I was young it was unheard of for girls to learn a trade like carpentry or plumbing, but these days it’s becoming more and more popular,” she said.
To young women thinking of a career in the construction industry, the winner of this year’s award for Women in Building has one message.
“If it’s what you’re passionate about then give it a go. What have you got to lose? You don’t know what doors you might open for yourself. You could be running your own building company some day.”
“If it’s what you’re passionate about then give it a go. What have you got to lose? You don’t know what doors you might open for yourself. You could be running your own building company some day.”
– DEBBIE JONESIndividual Home up
MARTIN LOCKE HOMESLOW on price, high on standards. That was the approach that Martin Locke Homes took when building this year’s winner of Individual Home up to $250,000.
It did not go unnoticed by the owner of the property, Sam, who was impressed by the inclusions of a Martin Locke Home including features such as 2700mm ceilings, LED lighting, quality plumbing fixtures, liveable sized bedrooms and garage.
This home also boasts MLH standard inclusions with finishing touches incorporated by the owner that include
50mm cornices, ducted rangehood, tiles to the ceiling in the ensuite shower and customised kitchen joinery.
MARTIN LOCKE HOMESFOR the clients of this award-winning house, there was an 18 month wait between buying their block at the yet-to-bedeveloped Harris Crossing and moving in to their dream home.
It seems however that the wait was worth it, for the end result by Martin Locke Homes is this year’s Master Builders Award for Individual Home $351,000-$450,000.
“The clients had backgrounds in cabinetmaking and as an electrician, so the pair were well equipped to make design changes and dream up big ideas to suit their family,” said Martin Locke.
“One of the most impressive features of the home is the sprawling kitchen island that doubles as a casual dining area.”
Other design changes included raising windows 200mm so that they’re high enough not to need blinds, as well as raising the windows in the kids’ rooms so the bedheads would fit neatly underneath.
ALL Martin Locke Homes adhere to a standard defined as ‘inclusive-living’. They are accessible for people of all levels of ability, removing all barriers for the aged or people in wheelchairs for example.
This essentially future-proofs the house and makes it a sound investment all around.
The winner of this year’s Master Builders Award for Display Home $251,000$350,000 is no exception.
“This home is the leader of our Entourage Series. The inspiration for the range came from wanting to provide a high quality home at a more affordable
price, benefiting — but not limited to — downsizers, first home buyers and families who are more budget conscious,” said Martin Locke, owner of Martin Locke Homes.
The home features a modest segregation of the spare bedrooms from the main, separated by two separate living areas and raked ceilings, giving the owners the opportunity for their home to grow with them.
“And of course the large kitchen, as well as large bathrooms and living areas, are a non-negotiable for us in keeping with our 10 point Inclusive-Living Design
Features.”
“All of our homes are designed with accessibility in mind, meeting Liveable Housing Guidelines’ Silver Level standard, every instance possible,” said Martin.
“We stand by our ethos ‘Built for Life’. Accessible features may not always
benefit the owner directly, but with the consideration of an ageing population, they will increase the liveability, rentability and appeal to a larger market given the resale of a Martin Locke Home.
“Building a home is a massive investment, no ma er whatever stage of life you are at. It’s important to consider the longevity of your home.”
Rising Star — Kiall Franzmann
KIALL Franzmann has one word above all else to describe winning this year’s Master Builders Award for Rising Star –“humbling”.
“When you look at the builders who have won this award in the past, there are some big boots to fill. Having said that, I’m so proud to take home this award, it’s a real honour,” Franzmann Constructions’ owner Kiall said.
“I come from a family of builders, my father has his own plumbing business, it was just natural that I become a builder too. There’s never been any doubt in my mind that that’s what I would be.”
For Kiall, winning the Rising Star Award is a foot in the door to more projects.
“I’ve been in business for five years now, but this award is the kind of recognition that helps put even more runs on the board,” he said.
While Kiall began his business working on new builds, in the past 18 months he’s discovered that renovations and remodelling are his forte.
According to the judges, Kiall’s work displays all the hallmarks of a Rising Star – top quality workmanship and a ention to detail in every project.
An award winner in 2015, the judges have observed Kiall’s growth as a builder and have recognised the niche market he’s undertaken.
“Customer feedback is so important for growing business and the comments made in testimonials from Franzmann Constructions’ clients are nothing but gracious, enthusiastic and extremely pleased with the result,” the judges said.
“The clients love that Kiall is hands-on and assists with design also.
“Congratulations to our Rising Star for 2018, Kiall Franzmann.”
ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER:
My husband and I recently finished a major renovation to our new family home. We had purchased an old Queenslander in a lot of need of tender love and care. Kiall worked with us from the very beginning to help create a design that would suit our lifestyle and our family’s needs. We are so glad we put our trust in him because it really has paid off with the end result being a home we don’t ever want to leave.
The job wasn’t easy – there were a lot of
trials along the way extensively renovating an old home, but Kiall had great ideas to simplify the practical side of the build without compromising on the quality features we really wanted.
I was initially a li le concerned about the timeline Kiall had set but he finished the build on time and under budget so we are absolutely stoked. We wouldn’t recommend another builder to anyone else. We love Kiall.

The end result is a bathroom renovation that showcases a double vanity with 60mm Quantum Quartz stone top and matching splashback. The vanity design includes Jamaican walnut ma grain and Prairie brushed stainless handles which show off the egg-shaped Napoli 57 dual basins.

Gabrielli Constructions in the upgrade of Building 1 at Calvary Leadership College, a project that has won the construction company this year’s award for Community Service Facilities. With offices, lecture rooms and fellowship spaces that include a cafe and restaurant being included in the designs, the finished project was deemed
a major success by the college and the construction firm.
The new building is modern, bright and appealing within the surrounding grounds, enhancing the existing buildings and facilities.
The French Oak flooring throughout the Fellowship Area 1 complements the contrasting dark ceiling that becomes inclusive due to the strip of matching wooden suspended ceiling panels. This light and airy space comes with modern cafe-style equipment and a bank of

In the Fellowship Area 2, the cafe counter is built from recycled railway sleepers and a copper counter fits in with the industrial chic design. In fact, the ‘zero step’ design of this home means there are no steps at the entry door, garage door and patio.
Doors have widened and circulation space capitalised meeting the ‘Silver Level’ in the Liveable Housing Design guidelines.
This home indeed caters for all ages. It has been perfectly designed to cater for whatever lifestyle you require.
Most importantly, the design caters for the North Queensland climate ensuring all available airflow is captured, as well as allowing the heat to escape the home.
Best Residential Swimming Pool
THIS year’s winner of the Master Builders Award for Best Residential Swimming Pool is a feat that literally defied gravity. The project was a 12m x 4.5 m formal concrete swimming pool that had to be constructed 1.8m out of the ground. The difficulties associated with the site required formwork to be braced 4m below the finished datum point.
“It should come as no surprise that a project of this size on this site was not without challenges,” said award-winner Tony Hartigan, owner of Sun City Pools.
“Ge ing the planning and design right from the start played a pivotal role, as did the experience and support of my team who are always able to trouble shoot and work out solutions as they arise.”
According to Tony, in our tropical environment outdoor living plays a big part in our daily lives. He said a landscaped swimming pool is an integral feature of our outdoor lifestyle.
Fortunately for clients of Sun City Pools, Tony and his team are there to do all the hard work so that you get to sit back and
relax by your new pool.
“The only thing our customers need to take into consideration is whether or not they want a pool. We take care of everything else.
“We always work with our customers to design and construct a pool that will work within their lifestyle, their yard size and their budget,” Tony said.
Residential Trade Contractor of the Year
PAUL J MIFSUDTHE fourth generation in a long line of cabinetmakers, Paul Mifsud was making his own toys in his father’s workshop when he was six years old.
Now as this year’s recipient of the Master Builders Award for Residential Trade Contractor of the Year, Paul said the award was confirmation that he and his team must be doing something right.
“It builds on our already good reputation that we’ve worked really hard on over
the last six years,” said the owner of the small Charters Towers-based business Kitchens & Joinery by Paul Mifsud.
Having previously taken home the award for Trade Contractor of the Year, Paul said the award helps build a brand of quality workmanship.
“This is our third consecutive win at the Housing & Construction Awards and our quality of workmanship does not vary between our extravagant winning entries
and the smaller low key jobs we carry out.
“In a small town like Charters Towers it doesn’t take long for word to get out, whether it’s good or bad,” he said.
For Paul, it’s quality rather than quantity that has proven his key to success.
“We currently have two full-time apprentices and sometimes we employ a contractor if the workload calls for it, but
expanding the business beyond that is something we haven’t decided on yet.
“I like to work alongside our employees through every single stage of completing a job. To expand, we’d have to hand the reins over to someone else in order to share the workload.
“This is something we’re not comfortable doing right now as the quality of work we provide comes from our hands-on approach.”
Commercial Trade Contractor of the Year
PJ WALSH CONSTRUCTIONSBEING part of the iconic makeover of The Ville Resort-Casino was no mean feat for the team at PJ Walsh, but this year’s judges were extremely impressed by the quality of workmanship and the scope of the project being completed by a local company.
The end result was a win in the category of Commercial Trade Contractor of the Year for PJ Walsh Constructions.
“Ba ling onshore weather conditions, continued resort operations and having to pour concrete in the ho est part of
the day were just some of the challenges that the team at PJ Walsh overcame to succeed in every way and achieve a Class 1 finish,” the Master Builders judges said.
PJ Walsh Constructions undertook the contract to form, place and finish all reinforcement and concrete elements of The Ville Resort-Casino’s multimilliondollar redevelopment.
The contract was a substantial and crucial aspect of the project that included footings, columns, on ground slabs, decks and formed walls.
According to Pat from PJ Walsh, this project is one of the most detailed the construction business has ever undertaken.
“We are grateful for the crew of talented craftsmen we were able to assemble for the project, led by Project Manager Jim Meehan and Site Foreman Nathan Smith, along with a crew of hard working, dedicated concreters and labourers,” Pat said.
“We are proud to have contributed to such a wonderful asset to Townsville
and the wider community.”
The quality of the work did not go unnoticed by the Master Builders judges.
“Using revolutionary ideas to achieve off-form finishes was a challenge but the results can be seen in the many curved concrete finishes of the facility,” the judges said.
“Congratulations to Pat and the team at PJ Walsh Constructions for their awardwinning job.”
Health Facilities up to $5 million
CORINTHIAN CONSTRUCTIONSA TURNKEY development from start to finish to build a specialised boutique medical centre was the brief put to Corinthian Constructions and ultimately led to this year’s Master Builders Award for Health Facilities up to $5 million.
“The client selected the site which was owned by Corinthian Constructions, and we then undertook and assisted the client through the town planning, design and construction stages,” Corinthian Constructions’ Director John
Mahlouzarides said.
“The client wanted to achieve a practical, efficient use of space, the creation of an enjoyable work environment and a pleasant experience for their patients,” he said.
The development consists of consult rooms, physiotherapy rooms, gymnasium, treatment room, sterilisation area, administration, reception, children’s play room, meeting
area and staff facilities.
The layout allows for the free flow of the work areas around the central core that houses the essential administrative activities and general amenities.
Each room has a different colour reflecting the practitioner’s preference.
“We spent a lot of time working with the clients and garnered a clear and concise direction from them which gave us an understanding of the nature of their
business and the result that they wanted to achieve,” John said.
“It was a pleasure to deal with clients whose desire was to achieve a harmonious environment for their customers and employees.
“As a builder it was rewarding to be involved in the project which gave us a sense of achievement and pride. To be honoured with an award at the end was icing on the cake.”
Education Facilities over $10 Million/ Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Environmental Management
JACKSON SEMLER PTY LTDTHE St Benedict’s School in Burdell is the first “Design & As-Built” 5-Star Green Star primary school in Australia, and a truly worthy winner of this year’s Master Builders Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Environmental Management as well as the award for Education Facilities over $10 million.
The school uses a suite of innovations
to minimise both its environmental impact and energy usage while achieving excellent thermal comfort conditions year-round.
All materials such as the concrete sealants and paints were selected to be environmentally friendly, low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) substances which resulted in staff commenting on the
lack of a “new” smell.
To make use of the naturally high levels of solar irradiance in Townsville, a 99kW solar photovoltaic array was installed on the Multi-Purpose B building. During its predominantly daytime classes, the school has an energy profile that closely mimics that of solar energy generation, allowing for high on-site usage of the
energy generated.
Being in a drought-prone region, the school has also reduced its mains water grid reliance by installing 90,000L of rainwater storage with a proportional roof collection area. This rainwater serves the non-potable services, irrigation, and simultaneously reduces surface erosion and run-off.

W & F CONSTRUCTIONS
BEFORE W & F Constructions undertook the task of reinventing the quadrangle at Kirwan State High School – one of Townsville’s largest schools with more than 2000 students – the space was nothing more than a grassed area with no permanent shade where students endured assemblies and parades in the stifling heat.
Now, the students enjoy a state-of-theart upgrade which is the winner of this year’s Award for Education Facilities up to
$10 million.
Needless to say, the primary focus of the project was to upgrade the existing quadrangle to provide the whole school community a covered area to gather and a end school assemblies.
The completed project is a 1752sq m covered area with a stage (including ramped disabled access) to one end and a terraced seating/platform area at the other end.
Above the stage area is a 5m x 3m LED presentation screen with audio and speaker system.
Other works included extension to the existing fire hydrant services, additional stormwater and a new road for
appliance access.
Since completion, the quadrangle has become a hub used daily by all members of Kirwan State High School.
“Having been to the school and realising
the positive effect the structure has had on the students makes this the most satisfying project we have ever been involved in,” W & F Constructions’ John West said.
“It has made an amazing difference to school events like ANZAC Day, allowing the whole school community to gather together in a purpose-built structure.
“A structure that gets kids out of the sun is a great asset to any school.”
