Building excellence at the forefront
with Grant Galvin, CEO, Master Builders QueenslandJudges impressed by high calibre of workmanship
THE Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards provide a well-deserved opportunity for our members to take a moment, celebrate success and receive recognition for their astounding work.
They also provide an opportunity for the broader community to take a peep behind the curtains and truly appreciate the amazing work being produced in our Queensland communities.
Regardless of the industry you work in, our daily lives are so busy that sometimes it can be hard to look beyond the endless to-do lists and overlook celebrating our own success. Therefore, it is with great honour that I welcome you to the 2019 Queensland Awards winners’ magazine.
Our long-running Awards program caters for entrants ranging from apprentices to trade contractors and small family businesses, to the biggest names in the building and construction industry.
Each year our members raise the bar higher and higher, and this year was certainly no exception. The incredible quality highlights the exceptional skills and craftsmanship of Queensland’s Master Builders.
Since the awards kicked off in February, our panel of dedicated judges from across the
state have physically attended each entrant’s property and made thorough assessment of each entry against the strict Awards criteria list. The judges aren’t looking for the cleanest home or the best interior design, their eagle eyes are honed in on workmanship, degree of construction difficultly, external appeal, siting and aspect along with amenities and aesthetics.
Following the regional Awards ceremonies, our judges were tasked with the tough job of shortlisting our finalists for the Queensland Awards. After much passionate discussion and sometimes, debate – one winner was selected for each category.
The feedback from our judges noted the high calibre of entrants; both those we’ve not seen in the Awards before and those who continued their stellar work and made our judges’ job a difficult one.
Each of our entrants has put their business, product and workmanship under scrutiny as part of an extremely competitive process. Their work, whether a winner this year or not, is a credit to the unwavering quality and craftsmanship of an authentic Master Builder.
Since 1882, Master Builders has been the voice of the industry, representing the interests of our members and the broader community. We are the peak body of
practical and relevant information to the industry and consumers. We have helped thousands of builders and trade contractors to operate professional, profitable and viable businesses that deliver superior quality and craftsmanship to their customers.
The Housing & Construction Awards program carries a long and distinguished history of showcasing the absolute best in the industry, and the level of competition among this year’s entrants is unsurpassed.
If you are considering a new build or renovation, please consider this book a showcase of the incredible work that can be achieved when choosing a Master Builder. Get in touch with one of the builders featured here directly, or utilise our Find a Master Builder search at mbqld.com.au This search will populate a list of properly licensed contractors who match your unique criteria and building needs.
On behalf of Master Builders, thank you for your remarkable work and congratulations on your deserving wins. I thank you for supporting the 2019 Housing & Construction Awards program.
2019 PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Bucking the trend
FROM butler pantries and mud rooms to lifts, electric car charging stations and black and white colour schemes – that’s what’s trending in new homes this year.
The insider insight comes courtesy of the judging panel in the Master Builders 2019 Housing & Construction Awards.
And they should know, they’ve spent a lot of time this year physically visiting each home entered into the Awards to make a thorough analysis of the build.
The judges noted other trends to be a strong continuation of the Hamptons style homes seen in 2018, including airy white interiors fit with shutters and neutral colour schemes.
Another trend – a throwback to the ‘90s – is family homes where parents allow their children to choose the colour of a feature wall in their bedroom.
“The butler’s pantries are almost the norm. For anything above $300,000 they definitely are, but even under that they’re increasingly incorporated,” the judges said.
ABOVE: Car charging stations are being incorporated into architecturally designed homes.
“Homeowners love them as it makes the kitchen look neat and tidy when people are over.”
The judges said black and white had clearly returned in a big way.
“It’s a timeless look and it’s certainly back to the fore,” the judges said.
“All of a sudden it makes an appearance, whereas five years ago it was all off-white and cream.
“Now, we see a lot of crisp white with black
trims and handles that almost aren’t visible. “Everything’s gone really matte in line with this, the gloss finish is gone. As a result, there’s a growing market for fingerless matte surfaces to avoid fingerprints with black finishes.”
The judges said the increase in Hampton’s style and mudrooms came hand-in-hand.
“It’s what the Americans have, it’s the room between the inside and the outside of your home. The terminology has come through
from America and Canada where there’s snow and lots of water and a mudroom is imperative.
The judges said the attraction for Hampton’s style was “homely”.
“It’s what you envisaged as a child, the architectural styling of the house has broad appeal,” the judges said.
“But the reason we don’t see it more is because of the cost. You’d probably put 20 per cent onto the cost of the house to go for Hamptons over rendered brick. Adding to this, in this style of home you see the dark, charcoal carbonated wood floors are quite prevalent.”
Beyond this, the judges said a growing trend in the higher end of the market was electric car charging stations and lifts in multi-level homes.
“Charging stations are around and being incorporated into architecturally designed homes. People are putting them in with the solar system,” the judges said.
“With some homes now the height of a multi-level unit development, lifts are an increasingly common inclusion in the higher end of the market.”

YOU are not prepared for this. With Mt Cooroy as a backdrop and Mt Tinbeerwah to the north, this quality home by Braeden Constructions appears to be floating in the Noosa hinterland landscape.
The way it interacts with the environment takes you by surprise. It is little wonder that the project took out the 2019 Master Builders Queensland House of the Year.
The challenges for the builder came in understanding the client’s vision for this landmark property, and working with the designers to deliver a quality product.
Set on a northerly slope of the 50ha horse and grazing property, the home takes full advantage of the outlook - sweeping views from Mt Cooroora in the west, past Cooran Tablelands to Mt Tinbeerwah.
The welcoming entry area can be opened right up, providing a calming rural view. A central fish pond effectively divides the bedrooms and the main living zone. This passive separation of living and sleeping areas is an example of how being a large house can still feel homely. This
is created through an ease of transition between the zones.
An appreciation of the landscape is evident, capturing the outstanding sunny, northerly aspect and views. It is protected from the cooler, south-westerly weather being sheltered by Mt Cooroy.
“It’s a big house but has a lightness of sitting above the landscape,’’ Braeden Constructions’ Mick Devlin said.
“It has been designed to let the outside in.
“The corners float. The gutterlines provide a sharp profile that gives it a border, during the day and especially at night. It lights up beautifully.’’
The house is a suspended slab that cantilevers three metres to give a feel of floating above the land.
It is basically on one level with further garaging, an office and storage beneath it.
Cleverly constructed into the slope is a wine cellar designed to maintain an even temperature.
There is an ionised pool and floodlit tennis
Magnificent Cooroy Mountain home by Braeden Constructions takes 2019 Master Builders House of the Year Awardcourt as well as a dam with cabana and deck.
The bathrooms are stunning, offering forever views from the stand-alone tubs and spacious showers. The main bathroom features a steam room while a mitre jointed stone slab serves as a central wall of the shower.
Centrally located, the beautifullyappointed kitchen is a gathering point for family and friends.
The colours and textures of the benches and cabinetry has an organic look to reflect the outdoors.
The functional design features a cocktail cabinet conveniently located to one side, and a walk-in, walk-out butler’s pantry leading to a country-sized laundry that in turn connects to the garage.
Designed to embrace sustainability features, the finished product must bring the builder immense pride.
“To see it during construction meant continually identifying work that needed finishing,’’ he said.
“Yet to see it as a functioning home, that’s the reward for all the effort.’’
W Brisbane redefines luxury
LIGHTING up the city’s river bank, W Brisbane is the first 5-star hotel to be built in the city in more than 20 years. It is the first stage of the new Brisbane Quarter; an iconic, integrated, world-class mixed-use development located on the former Law Courts site at George St in the Brisbane CBD.
W Brisbane features 312 hotel suites complemented by luxury amenities and guest facilities.
The four-level podium includes a master ballroom, specialty restaurants, conference facilities and retail stores, and affords commercial and residential tenants, and retail visitors stunning river views.
The design of the fit-out component of the build was intensely coordinated and carried out over three years, resulting in some of the most intricate and complex features seen in Brisbane.
Various specialty trades were commissioned for several bespoke interior finishes, including 2400 sq m of insitu terrazzo poured on podiums, a handpainted feature ceiling above the level four wet-deck and custom mosaic tiles in the level five spa.
Multiplex Regional Director Dave Redding said being part of the Brisbane Quarter project was a highlight for the company.
“This is a truly transformative development for Brisbane and we’re immensely proud to be involved,” he said.
Brisbane Quarter Construction Manager Glenn Robison agreed.
“The W Brisbane sets a new benchmark for complexity and quality in our state’s capital,” he said.
“It’s been a fantastic project to be part of and I’m proud of the whole team for their dedication and hard work; a remarkable outcome.”
The first stage of this $1 billion development offers opulent inclusions not seen in Brisbane for twenty years and earned Multiplex top honours“It’s been wonderful to partner with our client Shayher on the first part of this project, W Brisbane. We’re grateful to them as well as our many subcontractors, consultants and suppliers.”
Dave Redding
The judges were astounded by Multiplex’s quality of work, as well as their management of the project.
“W stands for Wow! It’s a massive project, and the level of finish is excellent,” the judges said.
“The innovation in design draws you in and makes you want to keep looking around.
“You get such a feeling in there that you don’t want to leave.”
The judges said the builder would have been faced with many challenges in the project and joked that they wouldn’t have wanted to manage it themselves.
“In addition to all the technical building elements, site access on this inner-city site would have been a challenge,” the judges said.
“They would have had great trouble with vehicles having nowhere to pull off.
“There were many outstanding projects in this category but this had the wow factor and we couldn’t fault it, it really blew you away in design and quality of build.”
Award winning home features stunning design elements
IT’S no easy feat to achieve the key criteria of the prestigious President’s Awards.
In addition to achieving top marks in the standard judging criteria, the construction cost must not exceed $350,000. It must be a home every Queenslander can aspire to own.
Winning the award this year is Brighton Homes’ stunning Mika 35.
Light-filled and featuring a unique and contemporary design, the Mika 35 suits those looking for a sophisticated yet affordable family home.
Located in the new Providence estate in South Ripley, this single-storey, fourbedroom home was built with family in mind and perfectly captures the essence of Queensland living, with a generous, light-filled and open layout, a quality fit-out and several design elements that make this home stand out from the rest.
Features include a cut-out window and sweeping cut-out breeze way. These openings create a talking point in Mika 35 and expand the views from the kids zone out into the open plan living. Both cut-outs create a vibrant flow throughout the home
and allow you to keep your eye on the kids while they play.
The three minor bedrooms, an activity room and shared bathroom are located at the front of the house – a haven for the kids. The entertainment area, also at the front of the home is for afternoons watching movies and eating popcorn with the family.
The master suite is in the middle of the home with an open ensuite to unwind, soak in a tub, and enjoy time to yourself.
The spacious and light-filled living and dining areas are situated at the rear of the home. Wine and dine guests in the dining area or have a quick breaky near the kitchen bench.
The pantry is tucked away at the end of the kitchen. The L-shaped sliding glass doors separate the island bench from the outdoor living and create a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors.
Inspired by Queensland’s sunshine and unique lifestyle Brighton Homes offers affordable home designs that aim to enhance the way Queenslanders live.
Affordability, quality workmanship and innovation key to winning President’s AwardThe team pride themselves on creating spaces that entice the senses and capture the beauty of sun-drenched days and electrified nights.
Brighton Homes will partner with a client through every stage and milestone of the building process, from selecting the perfect design, lifestyle and location, to the handover of keys to a brand new home.
The Brighton Homes team is there to make sure clients love building their dream home just as much as they do.
Coastal home wins People’s Choice
GRANT McDonald Homes have taken out the coveted People’s Choice award with Allan Residence at Yandina Creek.
With extremely tough and tight access, this challenging build was exceptionally pulled off to achieve a striking design that’s unlike anything seen before.
This light filled, five-bedroom home features clever design elements that make the most of the surrounding nature aspects.
Featuring huge windows throughout and an alfresco entertaining area and lap pool, there is ample opportunity to take in the sweeping
views.
The home is a stunning build with immense livability and is an entertainer’s delight.
The unique and striking architectural home has a distinctive modern feel and certainly stands out.
The entry is commanding with a massive 2.4m by 1.5m full glass entry pivot door providing an impressive introduction to the home.
The remarkable split-level home features five bedrooms plus a study, as well as two dedicated living areas.
The main living area and kitchen open onto the large north-east alfresco tiled area. The space offers a great view overlooking the
coast and lap pool all through a stacking door with seamless recessed tracks.
The outside meets inside in this home, all facing perfectly to suit the aspect and match its high ceilings and offset cantilevered roof lines.
The kitchen and pantry have a great layout, with stone tops and a mix of 2PAC and stone, and soft-close cabinetry throughout.
The home has polished concrete to the entry foyer and square set plaster throughout.
The home is environmentally friendly with solar power, heat pump hot water, solar powered LED downlights and the mass of lifestyle glazing is energy efficient .
Stonemason laps up state accolade
RON Neil Walkley has won Residential Contractor of the Year for his outstanding workmanship on a stunning Gold Coast pool renovation.
The new 15m lap pool and pavilion was built to replace a failing pool structure. The judges commented that a high-quality of workmanship was evident throughout.
The renovation featured French limestone pool work, where each step-tread was hand bull-nosed on site. External pathways and a driveway additionally featured hand-laid, tumbled cobblestones that were customised to suit the home’s design.
The pool pavilion was constructed with exposed rafters and VJ feature lined ceilings.
It featured a stone-clad fireplace creating a stunning focal point for the area and usability throughout the year. Interior and exterior stonework was a big part of the project.
Site location caused many challenges on the project. The only access for machinery was by the river on a barge and other materials had to be carried in from the street-front.
Tradesman cleans up
THE passion for his trade is immediately apparent when you meet Christopher Bradley of Honed + Polished Concrete.
This passion is accompanied by the technical understanding of the tools and products required. It’s this valuable combination that has earnt Christopher, Commercial Trade Contractor of the Year. He has the ability to tailor the process and products for the needs of his client and the end user.
The Coles Birtinya Trading Floor project
involved mechanically polishing close to 3,000 sq m of concrete.
The team at Honed + Polished Concrete in partnership Progrind, delivered the job ahead of schedule, without additional costs from variations. They were the only trade contractors on site to deliver their job without a defect
“In addition, the floor achieved a higher gloss points reading than required by the specification, This was largely due to

Chris has had exposure to 30 plus new homes per year in his four years of employment with JRZ Homes.

“We as an employer, could not be more proud of Chris, and the hard work and workmanship he possesses. He is a massive asset to our business, and we hope that he he will remain with us for years to come,” Jesse said. “We firmly believe he is deserving of this award for his humble approach to his role and his hard working, ‘not entitled to a job’ attitude.”
mentoring. I spent two days with my team refining our work method to embrace some recent technical improvements. These were around producing mechanically polished concrete floors.
“This also taught the team how to vary work methods for large scale production,” he said.
It was a very successful outcome with the national head of construction for Coles commenting that it was the best delivery of flooring he had seen.

Annette is currently employed by Prime Construction as their HSEQ Manager.
With one multi-storey, five-star resort handed over in December and two others currently under construction, Annette’s role is multifaceted.
The $120 million, turn-key project saw Prime employ approximately 266 employees, 16 Prime and 250 subcontractors, on a daily basis, plus head office staff.

Award win a pinnacle of success
A WIN in the prestigious Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards program has become a pinnacle those in the industry aspire to achieve.
Why? For more than 30 years, the Awards program has highlighted the movers and shakers in the industry. Those who stand out from the pack, whose craftsmanship, attention to detail and innovation is second to none.
The high calibre of entries is compounded by increasing entries year on year across the state making the competition a tough one. The Awards program is not a design showcase, rather a building competition and our judges are armed with a strict list of criteria that each entry must meet.
Originally known as the Housing Awards Competition, the first iteration of the awards was held in 1987. The next year, the awards were expanded to include both residential housing and commercial industrial fields. The event was rebranded as the Housing & Construction Awards.
The new program was run in conjunction with the Housing and Construction Conference in 1988, which formed part of the iconic Brisbane’s Expo ’88 event program.
Regional Queensland joined the party in 1993
when the awards were opened across the state at the first Master Builders Regional Housing & Construction Awards.
The state-wide ceremonies have grown from strength to strength over the years and Brisbane has blossomed from a small ceremony with just a handful of categories to 57 categories including construction, housing,
trade contractor/specialty and individual awards.
Now, as we continue to celebrate our industry more than 30 years on from those initial awards ceremonies, it is truly heart-warming to see original regional winners who are still active Master Builders’ members today.

W Hotel anchors $1 billion transformation that will revitalise the heart of the state's capital.
AS THE first five-star hotel to enter Brisbane’s CBD in 20 years and the only internationally branded luxury lifestyle hotel in Australia, W Brisbane has been transformative for the city.
Located at 300 George Street, W Brisbane is part of the $1 billion Brisbane Quarter development, which comprises seven basement car park levels, a four-storey retail podium, the 34-storey W Brisbane Hotel, a 40-storey commercial office tower and 82-storey luxury apartment tower.
Stage 1 of the development including the W Hotel, the basement car parks and the retail podium were delivered by Multiplex in 2018; Multiplex are now in the process of delivering stages 2 and 3.
Multiplex regional managing director Graham Cottam said a key challenge in delivering W Brisbane was giving the operators access to their space as early as possible.
“Due to the size of the project and the
complex building operator’s requirements, it was important for us to schedule our work and hand spaces over as early as possible."
“Strategic areas such as the 'Heart of House' areas were handed over significantly earlier than the contract completion date, to ensure all parties would be able to deliver the W Hotel to the public on time.”
In total, Multiplex delivered the project in 10 separate portions, collaborating closely with both the client and hotel operator.
Safety was another integral driver.
In line with Multiplex’s principle of maximising opportunity to control risk by design, planning and re-planning, the 300 George St, Stage 1 team aimed to eliminate the need to conduct work at heights.
“To reduce the requirement for work at heights, the roof structure was prefabricated on the ground and lifted into place,” explained Graham.
“The entire process was a great success, eliminating more than 95 per cent of the work to be conducted at height.
"Due to the expedited nature of works on ground, there was the added benefit of the work being completed four weeks ahead of schedule.”
Now complete, W Brisbane is a destination hotel drawing visitors to the city and enticing locals alike to explore the quality build.

“Sitting in boardrooms measuring KPIs and statistics meant I lost connection with the day-to-day operations, our people and our clients and it had taken a toll on my passion.
“If I was to regain my passion and drive for the building industry in creating successful projects, I needed to have much more
personal connection with the journey to ensure a successful result and importantly the project ‘Win/Win’ outcome was achieved for all stakeholders not just for a few.”
The company aims to deliver boutique style customer focus that results in tailored delivery solutions.
“We want our clients to feel engaged and valued throughout the whole life of the project delivery process, not just being courted until contract signing then left hoping they have a robust building contract to fall back on,” Damian said.
“Our company vision invokes a collaborative culture, one that values relationships and importantly leads by example by doing what you say you will do.”
After a being a part of the industry for 30 years, Damian said his favourite part of the industry is people working in teams to accomplish a common goal.
“In our case, it is a building that stands tall and proud and will do so as legacy of that achievement for years to come,” he said.
ONE Burleigh Headland is the first apartment complex to be built on Burleigh Headland in nearly 30 years and 5Point Projects is proud to have delivered this unique project.
The site adjoins the Burleigh Heads National Park, creating a unique position which offers residents uninterrupted north facing ocean views with the sanctuary of the rainforest as a backdrop.
Comprising nine residences across five levels, one of which is the top, full-floor penthouse. The penthouse features four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a sauna, while the remaining eight apartments boast three bedrooms, two bathrooms and spacious balconies.
Each floor has been engineered differently to capture the due-north water frontages through the use of transfer floors which also maximised the clear span footprint for each apartment.
These transfer slabs enable ONE Burleigh Headland to step back into the natural landscape, rather than be perched as a rectangle on the site.

Large-scale project reaps awards
Sports centre nets Northbuild major regional accolades.
WITH the construction of the new Glen McCracken Sports Centre at Toowoomba Grammar School, Northbuild Construction have pulled out all the stops.
This new state of the art facility is the largest project the school has undertaken in its 144-year history and demanded significant innovation from the Northbuild team.
From demolishing the existing manual arts building and removing sports department demountables, to extensive excavations and the construction of a new 3,815sqm stadium, this was an impressive project.
Although it was designed to nestle into the natural fall of the ground from the Trustees Oval to the Aquatic Centre carpark, it is a structure equivalent to a six-storey high building, with the view from Mackenzie Street hiding the true size of the building and the complexities involved in its construction.
The project involved a whopping 2015cbm of concrete, 180 tons of steel reinforcing, 240sqm of 1.00mm BONDEK formwork, 40,000 blocks, 60,000 bricks, and 338 tonnes of structural steel.
Due to the school’s restrictions on access, everything had to be delivered via the Trustees Oval access on Herries Street, which meant that Northbuild had to erect an electric hammerhead tower crane for 28 weeks of the construction process.
The architect and designers were able to fit the building into the desired location by partially excavating into the Oval, removing 14,000cbm of material and constructing a 13-metre high retaining wall along the Oval’s western side.
This stage of the project, along with the initial demolition works, took four months to complete before the first concrete pour was completed.
The building’s foundation is a combination of pad-and-strip footings, with core-filled blockwork and a suspended slab bearing on a framework of structural steel beams and concrete columns.
To pour the slab for Level 1, Northbuild considered the busy traffic around the school and the St. Vincent’s Hospital precinct during the day, scheduling the pour for 10pm one night in mid-August 2018 (the coldest time of year).
Working under floodlights throughout the night, 65 trucks poured some 375cbm of concrete over an area of 240sqm, producing a 140 – 200mm thick suspended slab.
“We try to nominate one or two projects a year and we’ve had pretty good success with the Master Builders in different areas – we’ve won for childcare centres, schools, etc. – but this was the largest project we’ve done in eight years,” Northbuild's regional manager Andrew Civil said.
With the Glen McCracken Sports Centre, Northbuild Construction have won the
Project of the Year, as well as the ‘Sporting Facilities’ category.
“In a community like Toowoomba, the significance of the Awards is more about being a part of the community – getting your name out and being seen – it’s good from a reputation perspective,” he said.
After eight years, Northbuild have moved their offices to a new site and look forward to accommodating employees, clients, trades and suppliers on their larger premises, with free parking and more storage space to go around.

Renovation project transforms
RICHARD Parsons Constructions is an awardwinning builder specialising in custom homes that are truly distinctive in style and quality.
The dedicated team recently picked up the award for Best Renovation up to $1million on the Gold Coast for a new 15m lap pool and pavilion to replace a failing pool structure.
Business owner Richard Parsons said the new swimming pool was designed to be completely out of the ground with a suspended slab surround, which allowed for a gym and entertaining area below. The use of bi-fold and French doors makes it perfect for entertaining as they open onto the expansive manicured lawns. A sauna and bathroom were incorporated into the design to complement and utilise the whole area.
The pavilion, which overlooks the pool, is constructed with exposed rafters and VJ feature lined ceilings, a fireplace cladded in random stone gives a sense of warmth and quality but also extends the time of use for the area.
The detail in the French limestone pool surrounds can be seen in quantity including the steps that link the levels from the house to the pool area where each stone has been hand bull-nosed on-site.
“The stonework was so detailed and such
exceptional workmanship my tiler won the tradesman of the year with Master Builders, which was a real honour.”
Richard said access was a significant challenge. “The site access was limited so we had to bring nearly everything in on a barge up the river including a 20ton excavator, and about 300tons of materials including sandstone blocks, topsoil, drainage gravels, scaffolding basically everything needed to build a home and swimming pool. “
Servicing the Gold Coast and surrounds, Richard Parsons started his own construction business in 2003 after working in his family's construction company.
“I have always had a love for construction since a young boy where I would build things in my school holidays or go to work with my father or his workmen,” Richard said.
“We only build a few homes a year depending on the complexity of the home and I personally supervise each home to make sure they are completed to my standard.
“I have a dedicated team of craftsman who look out for each other like a family, some of my tradies have been working with me for 20 years. We offer old fashion personal service and attention to detail - I build every home as though it was my own.”

The project included the demolition of existing buildings, including storage tanks, bunded areas and wash down bays.
A GABRIELLI Constructions took out four awards at the North Queensland region Master Builders Housing and Construction awards including Project of the Year and Industrial Building over $5 million with Stage 2 of Townsville’s Ergon Depot; and the coveted Project of the Year in Central Queensland for the Winton Shire Council Waltzing Matilda Centre.
The company also won Education Facilities up to $5 million for The Calvary Christian College Performing Arts Centre and Refurbishment/ Renovation over $750,000 for the GHD Townsville office refurbishment.
Stage 2 of Townsville’s Ergon Depot is now providing workers with a modern, functional facility to keep the region powered as efficiently as possible.
The 2019 North Queensland regional Project of the Year was separated into three stages to allow Ergon to continue operations throughout the construction, and A. Gabrielli Constructions won the contract for the Garbutt Depot Stage 2 redevelopment project in November 2016.
A. Gabrielli Constructions managing director Adrian Gabrielli said Ergon had planned an upgrade of its facilities in the North Queensland region for a number of years.
One building underwent a major refurbishment including video conferencing rooms, work stations, lift installations and mezzanine extensions among other additions and improvements. Construction of a new oil handling facility including tanks and pump installation was also included in the Stage 2 upgrade.
External civil works included heavy and light fleet car parking, roadways and a new wash down bay facility incorporating a vehicle underbody wash.
“The award was a great accolade and recognition for our team’s efforts to deliver and build the remodelled facilities for Energy Queensland,” he said.
“Without all their professional and personal efforts, our endeavours would never reach the pinnacle of delivery or construction that we have achieved and are continuing to achieve,” he said.
A Gabrielli Constructions also won the 2019 Central Queensland Project of theYear for the Winton Shire Council's Waltzing Matilda Centre.
As one of the biggest attractions in Queensland’s outback it was tragically destroyed in a fire in June 2015. A Gabrielli
Constructions has created a new eyecatching facility for the Winton Shire Council, reinvigorating the lifeblood of the town.
Using locally sourced and native materials to add to the appeal of the project as well as the challenges of coordinating the extreme logistics of distance and remoteness, the team put together an amazing build.
The judges believe the collaborative effort by the contractor, the committee and the architect/designer was fantastic.
The Calvary Christian College Performing Arts Centre is the perfect training ground for Townsville’s next generation of stars in the making.
The project consisted of creating a new one-storey building with an upper level plant room, music theory and practice rooms, as well as external paths, stairs, ramps, irrigation and more.
GHD’s newly refurbished office spaces would certainly make going to work a delight as it is a modern oasis teeming with productivity in the heart of Townsville City.
The new GHD Townsville office refurbishment included built-in joinery, partitions and glazing, ceiling works, installation of furniture, tiling and waterproofing, operable walls and more, all delivering a fresh and modern office space.

Dedication to industry earns regional Women in Building accolade.
WITH more than 35 years’ experience in the Townsville and greater area Roofguard have acquired the experience, the knowledge and the accreditation required to restore, rejuvenate and cool any residential or commercial roof and building.
As a 100% family born, grown and run business they offer a range of specially formulated heat-reflective coatings, protective coatings and roof paints.
At Roofguard they are passionate about educating property owners on the best way to protect, rejuvenate or restore their roofs and their property as a ‘whole’.
Tile, metal or asbestos roofs are restorable (to a certain point) and the Roofguard team can give advice and an alternative to roof replacement, especially with asbestos roofs. They understand clients want to work with honest suppliers and service providers who offer a service that is customer focused and includes you in the process; and these are also
the values Roofguard stands by.
Over the years they have learned and developed ways to protect and care for the environment. And taking this personal responsibility and approach played a huge role in receiving the regional Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Environmental Management award for North Queensland Master Builders Housing & Construction awards in August 2019.
Their next goal is to obtain energy efficiency accreditation and a star-rating for their polyurethane heat-reflective coating that they apply to roofs and buildings, and supply to businesses and consumers.
Life-long learning, personal and professional development, and positive industry disruptions are the basis of their growth and these actions contributed to Deni being awarded the Women in Building award for North Queensland in August 2019.
But all that would have never happened without the knowledge of the protective coatings industry that Jeff possesses and
that’s why they are known as the Dynamic Duo of Roofguard.
"A massive thanks goes to our amazing partners Ardex Australia, who took on the adventurous task to manufacture the product that is owned by Roofguard," Jeff said.
Function as important as form
TOWNSVILLE Home Buyers now have a new family home option in the market. Local custom home builder Martin Locke Homes (MLH) opened the region’s first highly accessible, multigenerational display home.
The Family 310 is essentially two homes under one roof, with separate living areas, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, patios and entry points joined by a shared lockable laundry, with the ability to also partition the garage for additional privacy.
“As a dedicated custom builder we understand that we build homes, not houses,” MLH Director, Martin Locke said.
“A home needs to enhance the lives of those who live in it, it should definitely look good, but more importantly it must feel good too and also provide for the functional needs of the family.”
Multigenerational or multi-gen homes are becoming a popular option around Australia as life and financial pressures make sharing a home with family more and more attractive.
The aptly named Family 310 also boasts a high level of accessibility, combining elements of the gold and silver levels of the Livable Housing Australia Guidelines, making it even more versatile.
“We know that the way people live together
in Australia is changing and that financial, career, time and health stresses are bringing generations together under the one roof in much the same way European families have lived for many, many years,” Mr Locke said.
“It’s also becoming increasingly difficult for young people to enter the new home market on their own, and there are often other factors such as grown children living with impairments who need their families close by, or elderly parents who don’t want to move to a nursing home but need that extra support of loved ones at home.
“Sometimes it can also just be about ensuring your home will adapt as your family grows and living situations change, and in the Family 310 our team wanted to create a home that could and would adapt.”
To ensure the highest standard of service and finish, MLH are one of the few building companies who have full-time employees both in the office and on site. The best example being the in-house carpentry and tiling teams, who are not only excellent tradesmen, but great people who share a passion for wanting to make a difference.

stages of the project. Working through the rain and establishing all weather access roads through the job enabled critical tasks to stay somewhat on track so as not to significantly hinder the target program.”
Additionally, the project was built on an old entertainment precinct which included a putt putt golf business.
“The site remediation was extensive and included removing redundant swimming pools, concrete footings, structural steel, buried rubbish and many rogue golf balls,” Locale Project Manager, Glenn Wilkinson said. RCQ has delivered projects that
Queenslanders love for thirty years. With offices located in the Sunshine Coast, Townsville and Brisbane; RCQ can service regional and city areas offering expertise in development, design and construction. Justin said the team were thrilled to have opened pre-registration for a new project in Maroochydore; Six Emporio Place.
“We believe the Sunshine Coast is a great place to live and we are aiming to set a new standard for urban coastal living. The lakeside homes are just a short stroll from Sunshine Plaza, and have been crafted by Cottee Parker Architects, and will offer one, two and threebedroom options from $299,000.”
Herbert Street project a winner
Urbane Build impress with marriage of old and new
WINNING the Downs & Western Region's Individual Home $351,000 – $450,000 category, best mates and joint-operators Jace Townsing and Luke Erickson once again showed what Urbane Build is capable of; successfully competing against larger building firms.
The team produces full custom turn-key new builds, additions and alterations to existing properties, investment properties and shop fit-outs.
Winning with their Cavell Street renovation project last year, Jace and Luke were happy to enter two new builds into the awards this time around.
One of those, was their East Toowoomba project in Herbert Street.
In the initial planning stages, the project faced numerous challenges before construction could begin.
Among other issues, the block had a diagonal fall of more than 2 metres and is situated
in a noise corridor, with certain existing structures required to be demolished and addressed prior to construction.
But, rather than aggressively alter the block of land, clever design and initiative by Urbane Build saw this house adapt to the lay of land.
From the custom contemporary joinery, striking black appliances and fully integrated dishwasher, to the custom-built solid entrance stairs, matte black tapware and external firepit area, this project is a striking marriage of old and new.
“We’ve made stepping outside the box
economical, while keeping to our impeccable standards,” Jace said.
He believes the mark their workmanship is leaving across the region is testament to what sets them apart from their competitors.
Despite the initial challenges, all Urbane Build’s hard work was worth it in the end, with the Herbert Street home selling to the first person to walk through its doors.
Jace and Luke believe being upfront and transparent, while maintaining a balance between professionalism and an easy-going attitude, is the key to great customer service.
Firsttimer turns winner
Kev Morris Builder understands need for adaptable living.
AS A school boy, Kevin Morris worked as a labourer for his uncle during weekends and holidays, where he learned to take pride in everything he does.
“My uncle would say a job worth doing, is a job worth doing right," Kevin said.
Growing up, Kevin always liked building things and would take pride in the finished product.
Today, using local suppliers and contractors and working with a team of three fulltime carpenters, one apprentice and his
supervisor, Cameron Turrell, Kevin provides a building service that is a cut above the rest.
“Cameron and I have been working together for more than 30 years,” Kevin said, adding that many of his tradies have also been with him for a long time.
“With more than 40 years’ experience, I have the know-how for custom designed homes that are different from others,” he said.
“We have more than 130 designs and growing,” he said.
Entering the Master Builders Awards for the first time this year, Kevin’s display home showed what makes his projects special.
This is Kev Morris Builder’s ‘Adaptable Living’ approach and this display home meets and
is certified at the ‘Silver Level’ for Liveable Housing Design Australia.
Kevin designed this home with wider doors (920mm), wider hallways (1200mm), zerothreshold entryways and no-step showers, as well as a garage that is 500mm wider than average.
Kevin entered the Awards with a vision of showing the industry a better way to design homes for the future of all occupants, allowing them to live in their homes for longer.
Kevin named the display home ‘Sarah’, after his daughter who passed away 10 years ago.
“As my daughter was in a wheelchair, I understood the need to be able to easily access the whole home,” he said.

choice of proposals.
At Airlie Beach Constructions they hold themselves to the highest of standards and conduct all their work to QBCC standards and are fully licensed.
All in the detail for Cairns builder
Builder, Matthew La Spina said his awardwinning build in Trinity Beach took a talented team.
A COLLABORATION between the client, Shaun Lockyer Architects and La Spina Homes turned this 1990’s dual occupancy building into a stunning family home and Far North Queensland’s 2019 House of the Year.
Additionally, taking home the Renovation/ Remodelling Project over $2million, Matthew said the complete strip-back and re-build of the home was designed to such a high level of finish with a 102-page plan outlining every
detail.
Master Builders judges commented on the extreme level of difficulty of the build itself with multiple materials used and specialised workmanship required.
Capturing ocean views, finishes include dry stack stone walls throughout the home to give it an earthy feel. The white stone floors brighten the timber and black-painted Accoya
ceiling. American oak doors are a highlight throughout the home.
The business is no stranger to building winning homes with the team being awarded a previous House of the Year in 2015. Cairnsbased, La Spina Homes have been building high-end homes, multi-unit developments and commercial projects from Tully to Cooktown since 1956.
First-time entrant reaps rewards
Park wins accolades for Transcape Constructions.
WADDA Mooli Park at Elliot Springs was Transcape’s first entry into the Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards, having been established in Townsville since 1993 - and their first ever win.
Operations manager Andrew O’Neill said he and the team were ‘pretty chuffed’ with the result, and were still reaping the long-term benefits of the project.
"We spent a lot of time, effort and resources delivering that package, and it’s a pretty stand-alone landmark out there," he said.
"We’re very excited as a business, we’ve grown significantly since the award of that contract. We’ve been able to put on more apprentices and our staff numbers have increased."
The space required significant preparation, and local traditional owners, the Bindal People, observed all groundwork and clearing due to the cultural significance of the site.
Wadda Mooli means ‘welcome’ in traditional
language.
The project includes a bio-basin to capture rainwater and overflow as part of the community’s water sustainability initiatives.
Andrew said it had been a great experience to see the project come to life with the use of walking paths, the asphalt bicycle training area, the playground, picnic and barbecue
facilities, the junior sports field and the space as a whole.
"We see about 100 people at the park a day, and that’s the reward for us," he said.
"A big congratulations to the Transcape staff and subcontractors who assisted this whole journey."

Is your builder a master?
THERE’S thousands of builders in Queensland but not all are Master Builders.
Did you catch our television ad recently? It featured a man at home, getting ready for the day, newspaper in one hand and fresh glass of orange juice in the other.
Sitting at his kitchen counter, he sets his glass down. No sooner, it starts sliding away down the bench. Frustrated, he grabs at the glass and firmly places it back down on the counter. Sure enough, it starts sliding away again.
We really wanted to get you thinking about who you use for your renovations or new builds. Why? Because the television ad highlighted, finding out your builder is a Master Builder sure beats finding out they’re not.
Making the choice to build or renovate a home can be one of the biggest and most rewarding investments of your life. It’s important to get it right and set a good foundation for your build.
And whilst there is no doubt a laundry list of decisions for you to make along the way, doing your homework to find the right builder for your needs should be your top priority.
But we recognise it’s not always clear who is and isn’t a Master Builder. That’s why our
dedicated team at Master Builders have taken the hard work and stress out of your search with our Find a Master Builder search – it’s an incredible tool that’s made for you.
We know from feedback that when people are looking to build or renovate, they want the most up-to-date and reliable information at their fingertips but at times, that can be hard to find.
Through the promotion of our television campaign, the Find a Master Builder search traffic increased 200 per cent compared to this time last year as would-be home builders and renovators rejoiced in the knowledge there was an easy to use tool to cut through the clutter and find the right builder for their needs.
The search is free and we urge you to try it out for yourself. If you head to the Master Builders website (mbqld.com.au), you’ll see the Find a Master Builder search handy on our homepage. Here, you enter a few details about what you’re looking for, where you live and a list of relevant builders and trade contractors will be populated for you.
By choosing a Master Builder, you build with peace of mind that you’ve chosen a quality, trusted and properly licensed contractor. Master Builders members complete
more than 80 per cent of building work in Queensland so rest assured that wherever you live, there’ll be a quality Master Builder there for you and your home.
But let’s be real. Building is a complex process and problems can and do arise, which can lead to disputes. The added benefit of using a Master Builder is that if you find yourself in one of these situations, Master Builders is on hand to assist.
After you test out the search and find a list of builders, if you’re looking to build or renovate head to your nearest Master Builders display village and meet with their home experts.
You will have the opportunity to walk through a full-scale display home. This will give you the opportunity to check for yourself the quality of the build and get a feel for what features, materials and colour you do and don’t like.
If you’re looking to do a renovation, the display village showcases the latest trends and gives you endless inspiration for whatever project you are ready to take on.
To test out the Master Builder search and find the right builder for your home visit mbqld. com.au or call 1300 30 50 10 for further information.
