Builders rise to the challenge
a visible pipeline of work, with our eyes firmly fixed on the long game for both the residential and commercial sectors.
Since the pandemic first sank its teeth in, our members have excelled in the face of adversity, and are continuing to amaze us with their never-say-die attitude. That spirit of determination and exceptional quality of workmanship they’re renowned for provided the inspiration for our 2021 Housing & Construction Awards program – Built to rise above.
It is with great honour that I welcome you to the 2021 Central Queensland Awards winners’ magazine.
rises, health, retail, industrial or community facilities and beyond, there’s a category for everyone to showcase their work and be celebrated. The efforts of individuals are also an important focus, from apprentices, women doing great things in the industry, and builders showing the promise of a long and exciting future ahead.
No matter whether our entrants take an Award away or not, they’re in esteemed company, and a valued part of why Master Builders are so widely trusted and respected.
Michelle Traill Regional Manager – Central Queensland Master Builders Queensland2021 was hailed as the year we’d say goodbye to COVID-19, leaving all the stress and drama wrought by the pandemic behind us.
As the year has progressed though, it’s become clear the challenges are far from over. While the demand on our industry is a first-class problem to have, the resulting trade and materials shortages and skyrocketing prices haven’t made things easy on anyone. As always, we’re continuing to lobby hard for our members and their customers when it comes to easing the pressure around these issues, as well as detangling red tape, and ensuring there’s
Our esteemed judges were thrilled to be able to visit hundreds of amazing projects in person this year. Cementing the sterling reputation of the Awards, this year’s field once again surprised and delighted with the calibre, their superb finishes, and degree of difficulty in construction. As always, the judges were on the lookout for external appeal, siting and aspect, as well as amenities and aesthetics, not the styling or interior design.
The judges’ comments reflect this, with accolades such as “very unique,” “seamless,” “excellent use of materials,” “clean finishes,” “difficult site” and “great level of detail” are consistent.
For more than three decades, our Awards program has been and remains the pinnacle aspired to by our members across their careers. Whether they build houses or revel in renovations, are a specialised tradie, or work on big commercial projects like high-

Visitor experience taken to soaring new heights
From the challenging phases of working through design and engineering to the on-ground construction, BESIX Watpac exceeded expectations during all phases of the project and have delivered a truly spectacular end result.
The Airpark Roof was the first of a two-stage process to create an exciting new experience in outback Queensland at the Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach.
The impressive floating roof, which is over 8,000 square metres, preserves the historical aircraft and dramatically heightens the visitor experience.
The light show (Stage 2) is projected onto the most unique of canvases – a 747 and 707 aircraft.
This helped to create a new experience for the tourism industry in the region as well as delivering additional economic and community benefits.
The completed project tells the history of Qantas and Outback Queensland in a new way, using the best lighting and sound technology available while providing the impressive roof covering to protect the aircraft display.
When it came to the practicalities behind the project, it was discovered many years ago that all external aircraft needed to be covered to preserve them and reduce the need for regular, expensive maintenance.
To ensure such preservation, BESIX Watpac was engaged to the complete the construction of the Airpark Roof, Viewing

When it comes to the overall project’s standout features, it is hard to go past the viewing platform.
Standing 9.5 metres high, the viewing platform boasts a lift and stairs, with the potential to integrate future technology to enhance the museum experience.
A key component of their operation which sets BEXIS Watpac apart from the rest is their commitment to supporting local and in the instance of the airpark roof, this was once again an integral element of their approach.
Where possible, Australian sourced materials were used, and local subcontractors and suppliers were engaged.
An iconic addition to this much-loved landmark, the entirety of the project was executed expertly and to the highest of standards and is a project in which the BESIX Watpac team can be incredibly proud.

The Chris Warren Homes Edenbrook Display Home was constructed with the goal in mind to showcase our workmanship and style, as well as some of the little ‘extras’ and ideas you can add to personalise your build. Built on a corner block, the goal was to showcase what CWH can do on a budget similar to that of our clientele. Located in a prime position in the tranquil and picturesque Edenbrook Estate, the 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom home boasts easy access to the numerous walking paths and trails that exist amongst the grounds within Edenbrook Estate. With the growing family in mind, we envisioned a home that was low maintenance, and which showcased the quality and range of products and ideas available to clients when building their home with CWH. The home is 210 square metres and is filled with an abundance of extras; raked ceiling in the living area, designer kitchen, floor to ceiling tiles in both bathrooms, pop up sprinklers, the list goes on. We have then finished the home with gardens and greenery and designer fences. Perfect for the modern, growing family, the home meets many desires plus more. From a wonderful entertaining area, to the spacious open plan kitchen, dining and living area, along with loads of storage options, there are plenty of places for the family to spread out and move Impeccably furnished, the home certainly gives off the WOW factor all the way through to the ensuite at the rear of the home. This display home has all the perfect finishing touches of a practical and functional family home.

Master your dream project
IF there are any positives to come out of the global pandemic, the focus and value we place on ‘home’ is undoubtedly one of them.
Over the last 12 months, a record number of so-called COVID migrants, largely from New South Wales and Victoria, made the decision to pack up their lives and make Queensland home. (What’s not to love?) Government stimulus such as the HomeBuilder grant helped boost the industry at a critical time, putting the great Australian dream of a new home within reach.
Many in the sunshine state have also opted to give their homes a makeover, with the ABS counting over $255 million worth of renovation work approved in the first quarter of 2021 alone.
With building or renovating your home one of the biggest, most exciting investments you’ll ever make, choosing a builder you can trust should be top of the list in the decisionmaking process.
While it might seem hard to know where to start, choosing a Master Builder is a good way to give you peace of mind that you’ll be working with a quality, trusted, and properly licensed contractor who will deliver to the highest standard.

Rising to the challenge
Since starting in the construction industry at age 15, Aaron Flanagan’s career has been on an upward trajectory.
Nominated for the 2021 Rising Star Award, Aaron has been involved in multiple programs shining a light on the construction industry.
Last year his company, AF Constructions, was involved in the ‘T2S Transition to success’ program.
Committed to making a difference through his work, Aaron aligned with the training program which works with young people of 15 and over who are involved in the youth justice system or are assessed as being at risk of entering it.
Aaron volunteered his and his staff’s time to give people in this program a glimpse into the construction industry and what it entails, in hopes of helping them learn new skills and potentially gain employment within the industry.
AF Constructions has also been involved in giving school students the opportunity to learn about the construction industry by volunteering his time for the work experience program, once again reiterating his
commitment to the industry as a whole and his desire to make a difference.
Aaron holds his Certificate III, Certificate IV and Diploma in Building as well as his EWP, Skid steer, Excavator and explosive power tools tickets.
Having started his apprenticeship in Grade 10 through a school-based program, Aaron has since worked in many places throughout Queensland.
Completing his five-year carpentry apprenticeship in Bundaberg, these years saw Aaron gain valuable hands-on experience in which he was running projects for builders.
A talented footballer, Aaron then relocated to Brisbane for the Queensland Cup where he stayed for 12 months.
While in Brisbane Aaron worked as a site foreman glazier before he returned to Bundaberg to continue running building projects.
A football position with the Queensland Cup once again beckoned and Aaron then moved to Rockhampton.
Still operating in Rockhampton today, Aaron initially joined DR Moore Constructions where he worked for 12 months.
Following this, Aaron made the decision to go out on his own as a sole trader for 12 months.
This then resulted in Aaron’s decision to start his own company, AF Constructions, making him a company director at the age of just 22.
AF Constructions now employs four staff members and is heavily involved in the industry across Central Queensland.
A truly worthy nominee of the Rising Star award, now 24, Aaron’s company AF Construction has been incredibly successful throughout Central Queensland, with Aaron seen as a true inspiration to the industry who proves that with hard work and determination, dreams can be achieved.

Achieving impeccable style at an affordable price
Proving good things come in small packages, Crestwood Easy Living took out the winning spot in the Individual Home up to $250,000 category and also the much-coveted President’s Award
With 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, it is the perfect residence for first home buyers who are looking at starting a family or for retirees who wish to downsize.
Upon entering the home, you are welcomed into the open-plan living space which flows seamlessly through to the rear alfresco area due to the large sliding doors off the kitchen and dining room.
The placement of these doors allow for natural light and air to flow through the living area, further enhancing the openness of the space.
Throughout the home, sleek and polished colour schemes have been employed, achieving a stylish, contemporary aesthetic. Neutral colours make the rooms appear spacious and luxurious, while pale blue tiles, white cabinetry and timber accents provide for an ultra-sophisticated Hamptons look.
Lyke Homes second winning entry, Inverness Abode, took out the Individual Home $350,000-$450,000 category and is an exercise in achieving a functional family design while not compromising on style.
This four-bedroom, two-bathroom home exemplifies modern country chic.
From the moment you enter through the large full-glass front door, you feel the open expanse of the living areas.
Everything about this space is designed to grab your attention, from the grey features in cabinetry and flooring through to the black fixtures and fittings.
All inclusions balance perfectly, adding
warmth to the cool tones of the arctic white décor.
Two key standouts of this property are the kitchen and the use of windows and sliding doors to allow passive airflow and natural light through the home.
By utilising black frames on the doors and windows, the modern vibe of the home is further enhanced.
When it comes to the kitchen, the design and layout has truly made for a chef’s dream.
Ample cupboard space, Caesar stone bench tops and splashback, quality appliances and a large walk-in pantry ensure the space is as functional as it is aesthetic.
Stamping their mark on this year’s awards program with two standout builds, Lyke Homes continues to solidify their reputation as first-class operators in the construction landscape, with a key focus on customer satisfaction and an impeccable attention to detail.
Taking out three titles at this year’s Central Queensland Master Builders Awards night was Lyke Homes with their entries Inverness Abode and Crestwood Easy Living.Personal touch makes all the difference
Having been in the industry since 1975, Peter Garland of PJ Garland Builders has amassed a reputation for reliability and versatility of building technique.
A true family affair, Peter works in the company with his three sons, adding to the personable appeal of the business.
Located in Barcaldine, Peter and his team take great pride in every job they undertake and this is evident through their detailorientated approach.
“We will take on any job that has a difference from normal building techniques,” Peter said.
“I believe that my vast experience over the years on all facets of construction has made it easier for us to take on any job.”
And it was just this set of outstanding credentials which saw his team contracted to build the Barcaldine Aged Care Facilities Centre.
As a long-awaited local project, Peter and his team wanted to produce a truly outstanding result.
“The Aged Care Facility was a project that meant a lot to the town’s people after many years of fund raising,” he said.
“We wanted to make sure that we were there to deliver the project as a local identity and use only local labourers and contractors to complete the works”.
More than just a structure, the facility has brought new life to the aged residents of Barcaldine, something that Peter is particularly proud of.
“The facility has a range of features that showcase the needs of aged residents and the town in general,” he said.
“Whether it be as a meeting place, to serve a meal out of the commercial kitchen, play bingo, go dancing or simply visit the Home Assist office on site.”
With plenty of landmark projects in the works, such as the Muttaburrasaurus
Interpretation Centre and the Barcaldine Recreation Park Facilities, PJ Garland Builders are looking forward to continuing their work within Central Queensland and adding more standout projects to their name.
